Kenley offers advice to HCLA alums By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Former State Sen. Luke Kenley leaned on his years of experience as a legislator to offer leadership tips to recent Hamilton County Leadership Academy graduates. SUMMIT Kenley, a Noblesville Republican who was chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, served as the keynote speaker at the HCLA’s 6th Annual Leadership Summit June 18 at the Embassy Suites Conference Center in Noblesville. Kenley retired in September 2017 after serving Senate District 20 since 1992. “This is a great tradition and a great program, and thanks to visionaries that started this process,” Kenley said. HCLA selects a group of leaders each year to complete a comprehensive 10-month curriculum exploring issues. The 35 graduates explored projects such as affordable housing in Hamilton County, creating a domestic violence shelter in the county, starting a Hamilton County Youth Leadership Academy, workforce development for the construction industry and helping area children be their best. The group’s mission is to connect and cultivate leaders while inspiring them to serve the community. “There is a reason why people have asked you do to this. They see something in you they think can benefit other people,” Kenley said. “We need you to continue to make Hamilton County to be a great place to live and work. You can set an example for the entire state.” Kenley, who encouraged graduates to use the gifts they’ve been given through the training, said that listening and timing were two keys for him. “I kept a folder in my briefcase of constituent ideas,” Kenley said. “When people contacted me by email, I would respond by email. If

they contacted me by phone, I would call them back on the phone. If they wrote me a letter, I would respond by letter.” Kenley said most people don’t want elected officials to tell them all the things they are going to do. “They want to tell you what is on their mind,” he said. Kenley said his military service during the Vietnam War era was good for him as far as learning leadership skills. He said some kind of service commitment for all young people before they start their careers would be good. “I’m not suggesting it has to be military, but I think some service commitment would be a good thing for everyone,” he said. assistant principal and English teacher. “It has been an absolute honor and privilege to serve the students, staff and community as NHS principal,” Bryant stated. “I have enjoyed celebrating with a wonderful staff the best academic performance in the history of NHS.” District officials said they have started the search for Bryant’s replacement and will work with the high school’s four assistant principals and two deans to ensure a smooth transition for the start of school in August. District officials said Bryant’s replacement will be named at a later date.

NHS golf earns 2nd at state By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Noblesville High School 2019 graduate Clay Merchent did his best to chase down Carmel’s Nick Dentino. He caught him but just SPORTS couldn’t overtake him. Merchent rallied on the 18th hole to tie Dentino for first place in the IHSAA boys golf state finals June 12 at Prairie View Golf Club in Carmel. However, Dentino prevailed in a one-hole playoff to take the top individual honors. Merchant said he played a bit sloppy in the first round to begin the final round two strokes behind Dentino. On the one-hole playoff back on the 18th hole, Merchent parred while Dentino birdied for the victory. Merchent plans to play in college but hasn’t yet committed. The Millers gave it a shot as well, finishing tied with Center Grove for second place with 605 strokes. Carmel repeated as state champion with a score of 588, only 12 strokes over par as a team. “These kids all year have competed,” Noblesville coach Gary Deakyne said. “Everybody knew Carmel was the best team in the state. We did everything we could to try

to chase them down. There were times out there when things were tough. They kept plugging away and we brought some hardware home.” All five golfers in the starting lineup graduated June 7. “It’s a great day. It’s a happy, sad day,” an emotional Deakyne said afterward. One of those graduates was Deakyne’s son, Jake, who had the second-lowest score on the team in the finals with a 152. Joe Whallon was one shot behind with 153. Other Noblesville scores were Chris Scheib with 161 and Jaxon Stutz with 163.

COMMUNITY NOBLESVILLE 206th Street is closed beCONSTRUCTION tween Ind. 19 and James Road for repairs to a railroad crossing. The area is set to reopen on or after June 25, depending on weather. This closure will be a full closure, but residents will have access up to the railroad crossing. Please keep in mind, no one will be able to cross over the tracks during maintenance. Traffic that is not local is asked to find an alternate route. The intersection of Cumberland Road and Field Drive is closed for the construction of a roundabout by Noblesville High School. North of Noblesville in Cicero, Joyce Avenue between Strawtown Avenue and 241st Street will be closed for the replacement of a small structure. The road will be closed to all thru traffic for approximately 120 calendar days, tentatively opening back up to traffic on or before Sept. 30. Alley paving projects are ongoing. Work will be divided into two sections – north and south. The southern portion alleys are bordered by Pleasant Street, Christian Avenue and 11th and 13th streets. Northern work is between Conner and Clinton streets, running from 10th Street to 17th Street, and alleys to the west and southeast of North Elementary School. Work is ongoing on the Logan Street Pedestrian Bridge Project in downtown Noblesville. The northbound lane of Ind. 19 between Ind. 32 and Logan Street will be closed the duration of the project, through September. The detour consists of taking Ind. 32 westward, turning northbound onto Ind. 38, then eastbound on Logan Street and northbound on Ind. 19 to avoid the closure. On Logan Street, the designated westbound right turn lane on the bridge will become a combined straight and rightturn lane. The eastbound straight lane will be shifted north, and the south side of the bridge will be under construction. The Riverwalk near this area also is closed. WESTFIELD Shelborne Road between 146th Street and 151st Street, and between 146th Street and 141st Street will be closed for road reconstruction. The road will be closed to all through traffic, tentatively opening on or before Oct. 21. During the closure, traffic should utilize the signed detour route. Property owners will continue to have access to their properties through the construction area. This closure is part of the improvements to 146th Street, which will widen the roadway to four lanes of traffic. Read more at youarecurrent.com.

Indianapolis MPO awards $55.5 million in funding

news@currentnoblesville.com

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Planning Organization announced May 22 it has awarded $55.5 ROADS million in funding for various infrastructure projects in several areas, including Carmel, Fishers, Westfield and Hamilton County. The projects will go to bid in Gremling 2024. The projects funded in Hamilton County include: • A roundabout at 106th Street and Westfield Boulevard in Carmel • A roundabout at 96th Street and College Avenue in Carmel • Improvements to the 116th Street and Allisonville Road intersection in Fishers • A roundabout at 126th Street and Southeastern Parkway in Fishers • A roundabout at Olio Road and Southeastern Parkway in Fishers • Reconstruction of the Bell Ford Bridge

in Hamilton County • Replacement of Bridge 187 in Hamilton County • Resurfacing 146th Street from U.S. 31 to Hazel Dell Parkway • A safety upgrade on Midland Trace Trail in Westfield According to a press release from the Indianapolis MPO, each project requires a local match to be funded, and the projects were judged based on technical criteria relative to the funding category. The criteria include impacts to air quality, improvements to congestion, safety, pavement quality and more. “With requests for 69 projects totaling $180 million, it is clear that infrastructure needs in Central Indiana are great,” Indianapolis MPO Executive Director Anna Gremling stated. “This funding will help local governments address the ongoing challenges of building and maintaining the infrastructure that is so critical to the regional and state economies.” Other projects are in Avon, Beech Grove, Franklin, Greenfield and Indianapolis.

Microsoft called me and …

Buying Selling Buying Or Or Selling A A Home? Home?

Commentary by Feras Mash How many times have you heard of people getting calls from tech companies like Microsoft and Apple, telling them TECH they have a virus or security issue with their computers, and they need to gain access remotely in order to “fix it?” Ten times out of 10, those calls are nothing but good, old telemarketing spam and scams that either want to sell you services or products you don’t need, or they’re actual malicious hackers and thieves who want access to your information. When a customer calls me or comes to my service center about this, I always remind him or her that no company out there knows anything about your computer state and never will call you about it. If you are one of the unlucky that answers such a call, never respond or give the caller any level of access to your computer or personal information. If someone actually did gain access, then shut everything off and take your computer to an expert for a full scan and removal of any spyware or malicious-installed software, such as remote controls. Always be mindful of who’s calling and why, and then simultaneously ask yourself: Why would Apple or Microsoft call me about my computer when I don’t have any problems and I did not contact them? An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Feras Mash is the owner of Computer Troubleshooters of Carmel and a contributing columnist to Current Publishing. For more, write him at fmash@ comptroub.com.

Downtown housing, parking, retail project breaks ground By Sadie Hunter sadie@youarecurrent.com Nearly 10 months after it was first presented to the Noblesville Common Council, The Levinson has broCOVER STORY ken ground. Bringing the first new apartments downtown in 100 years, the $23.4 million project also will bring new parking and retail space to the northwest corner of Ninth and Maple streets in a half-block space south of Conner Street, spanning the east-west block between and Eighth and Ninth streets along Maple Street. At the helm of the public-private partnership between the City of Noblesville and Fishers-based Rebar Development is Shelby Bowen, Rebar’s president and a Noblesville resident. “I’ve always been interested in Noblesville because it has this existing energy and vibrancy downtown, but what it didn’t have was a lot of rental housing,” Bowen said. “There are a few really cool apartments, but not what you would think about if someone were thinking they wanted to rent. As you start to see people’s desire to kind of live in walkable and energetic areas, you can see the impact that projects like this have in other communities, so I always knew Noblesville was right there. When I started my own company, it’s the first place I came, and then it really came to finding the best location and finding what makes the most sense. Where would people love to live?” Five stories tall, it will be one of the tallest buildings in the city, comparing only to the historic county courthouse. Because most of the footprint for the development was a city parking lot, the clearing process was quick. A small building that housed Holt Legal Group and Ayer’s Real Estate was removed. “But it’s no fun to tear down buildings that have been around a long time,” Bowen said. “They’re significant to some people, so we’re going to try to repurpose some of the brick in elements of The Levinson, but at the same time, a lot of buildings have come and gone, even just at that site. It’s just an evolution. Downtown development really does need to recycle. If it just continues to decline, the buildings can become unusable or vacant, and that’s not a strategy for revitalization.” Below ground will be 1 1/2 stories of park-

ing, in addition to a full level of parking on the second floor above ground for a total of 300 parking spaces, 200 of which will be public full time, and 50 of which will be public between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. On the first floor, Bowen said 5,000 square feet of commercial space will allow for one to three new businesses along Ninth Street. The building’s third floor will primarily house the project’s amenities, including a co-working space, fitness room, club and multimedia rooms. The outside will feature a courtyard for residents with a dog park, pet wash, outdoor grilling, a fire pit and more. The fourth and fifth floors will house the 85 apartments, a mix of studio and one- and two-bedroom units. “This project draws not just young people, but also people who maybe don’t want to live in a big house anymore or empty nesters that love Noblesville, that like the same things as young professionals who want to be able to walk to a restaurant, the farmers market, concerts, trails,” Bowen said. “It’s structured, covered parking, a safe place to live, maintenance-free, petfriendly. We’re excited to have people of all demographics live in our project. “I think there’s a lot of shared interest in pride in this community. The traditional style of apartment that’s kind of out near

the golf course or off of (Ind.) 37, I don’t know that that’s as appealing as something with more of a community feel.” Seventy-five of the units will be market rate, but 10 will be workforce housing units. “We worked with the city on those to reduce the rent level,” Bowen said. “So, 10 of the units will have a lower rent than the remaining 75. We’ll create an income qualification cap, but we’re still looking at what that number is. It will allow 10 folks who may not otherwise feel comfortable at market-rate rent to live here, and they’re the same units with the same finishes. There’s no difference between the market-rate units and the workforce housing units.” In all, the commercial and retail space will be 88,000 square feet. The entire project has an estimated completion date of October 2020. “The garage will be built first, and then they’ll go in and build the commercial space and apartments,” Bowen said. “The garage will actually be done maybe by the end of the year, but for logistics and safety, it won’t be open because we’ll still be constructing on top and around.” Bowen said his company also is working hard to tell the story of the history of downtown Noblesville, dedicating the space of the The Levinson’s lobby off Ninth and Maple streets to displaying historic photos and other artifacts. Bowen said he is working with Nickel Plate Arts and Hamilton County

Historian David Heighway to accomplish it. “One of our entrances and exits to the garage is in the (south) alley off of Conner Street, and that’s a really cool corridor, and we’d like to do some things there as well,” Bowen said. “We really want it to feel like it’s a part of downtown history, so we’ll use a lot of our space to try and tell that story.”

WHAT’S IN A NAME? The Levinson’s name is a tribute to the Levinson family, one of the first Jewish families in Noblesville, whose homestead was on the property where The Levinson is being built, just south of the east-west alley on Eighth Street. The family was S.O. Levinson (Photo courtesy of Hamilton known for philanEast Public Library) thropy, but it was the eldest son of the Levinson family, S.O. Levinson, a Noblesville High School graduate and Nobel Peace Price nominee, who, nearly 80 years ago, donated the land to the city. The land would later be the site of City Hall before it was moved to its current site on South 10th Street.

ESSAY First and last

LETTER Theater parking lot dangerous

Commentary by Terry Anker School’s out. The kids are enjoying the lazier days of summer. Homework is not a part of the evening ritual and wake-ups are a bit less frenzied. Class projects, final exams, the big game and the epic dance, no longer on the horizon, are all slowly fading in the rearview, never to be seen again. The events themselves slip into some blur of our collective memories. They become part of the weeks, the months, the years into which we organize ourselves. We adults, every one of us, has some recollection of school days. They revolve around friends, teachers and, hopefully, some smiles. But even as the reminiscences flood in, the details are faded and facts are confused. To help us maintain some order as life rushes by, we rely upon photos and mnemonics to keep it straight. Dad remembered events by the car he drove at the time something occurred. Each automobile was imbued with special significance and could be recalled in chronological order. Others invest in firsts – first kisses, first cars, first homes and first flat tires. It makes some sense since we humans are prone to remember most under a modicum of distress. There may be nothing more stressful than crossing over from the uninitiated. Likewise, we may keep a list of lasts – the last time we saw a dear friend, the last chicken dumplings that our grandmother made for us and the last time we laughed until our sides ached. Others? Even so, these firsts and lasts can sneak up on us. For some, this school year was the last, and for others, the first. Should we plan for these or are we better served to just let them happen? All’s calm on the vacay front Commentary by Danielle Wilson As I begin writing, I can hear our Lab’s stomach seriously gurgling, loudly and often. She just ate, so I’m not sure if everything is about to come back HUMOR up or simply in the digestive process. Reminds me of the old days when I’d try to crunch out a piece during nap time. Would I finish before the rugrats awoke or would my creative flow be blocked by crying and dirty diapers? Time will tell. I may need to cut this short if the dog throw up, but I’m willing to risk it for the biscuit. I’m pleased to announce that we here at Chez Wilson survived the annual family vacay to the beach, where 26 of us piled into a house for one week. The littlest is 3 and the oldest is 77, but we managed to make memories and keep the shanking to a minimum. Actually, I don’t recall any fights between cousins, spouses, or my four sisters, which

is really impressive when I think about how much wine was consumed. We had one case of confirmed bronchitis, several painful sunburns and my mom did come precariously close to rumbling with a neighbor group who set up their tent directly in front of ours (and threw fishing lines where the kids were swimming!), but on the whole, it was remarkably relaxing. In fact, the only drama was a live production of “Legally Blonde,” where my 6-year-old niece, in the role of Elle Woods, asked if her toilet-paper boobs were too big. Classic. Nothing else to report, and I can no longer hear gastro rumblings from The Dog. Life is good. Peace out.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK “Strive not to be a success, but rather to be of value.” -Albert Einstein

Editor, I stepped into a pothole in the parking lot at The Great Escape Theater (Regal Cinemas Noblesville 10, 10075 Town and Country Blvd.) in Noblesville last June. It was in a place very near where I exited my car, so it was difficult to spot. I ended up chipping my ankle bone in two places and suffering extreme soft tissue damage from whiplash, which has still not healed. When I filled out the incident report on June 24, 2018, the manager wrote on the report that the pothole would be repaired within 30 days. It has still not been repaired nearly a year later. A few weeks ago while at the theater, I witnessed the same thing happen to another person. She filled out an incident report, and I and another person gave our information as witnesses. I told the manager that the same thing had happened to me last June, and I asked her why they had never repaired the pothole. She said that they have been getting estimates to get the work done. I said, “For 11 months?” When it happened to me it caused a great deal of pain and is taking a lot of time to heal. It may have happened to others. If all the potholes had been repaired after my injury, like the incident report stated, it would not have happened to the woman that was hurt a few weeks ago. Bonnie Hicks, Noblesville

Mended Hearts hits 11 years By Sadie Hunter sadie@youarecurrent.com Last month, a group whose focus is heart health and support, celebrated its 11th anniversary. H E A RT Mended Hearts, whose local HEALTH chapter meets monthly at Riverview Health in Noblesville, welcomes Hamilton County-area residents and offers peer-to-peer support for heart patients and their families. The organization works to educate area residents to be proactive in getting heart scans and checkups. Mended Hearts President Marv Norman has been involved with the group for approximately four years. “I jogged and worked hard to be sure that I would not have heart trouble but still got it,” Norman said. “I have had open-heart surgery, have a pacemaker and am susceptible to atrial fibrillation. The best thing a heart patient can do is follow their doctor’s advice for medications, diet and exercise.” The group’s motto is, “It’s great to be alive and to help others.” Aside from monthly meetings, trained Mended Hearts members spend time visiting heart patients at Riverview Health to provide support to

survivors who have had complications. A relatively new initiative also has given the group a renewed purpose – the donation of AEDs to nonprofits in Hamilton County. To date, Mended Hearts has donated AEDs to The Good Samaritan Network, the Atlanta Fire Dept. and Life Church in Noblesville. Mended Hearts meets at 11:30 a.m. on the third Wednesday of each month. Meetings are free. The next meeting is July 17 at the Riverview Health Professional Building, Rooms A and B, 395 Westfield Rd., Noblesville. For more, visit riverview.org/classes/ mended-hearts.

BEER IS NEAR A guide to some of the best Hamilton County breweries

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com

(Above) Union Brewing Company’s 5 oz. pours are only available al a carte. They are $2.50 each. From left, Java Diffie, Triple Zeroes, Under the Table and Fred’s Red Ale. (Left) Upland Carmel Tap House offers a flight of seven, 6 oz. pours for only $9.95. (Photos from Anna Skinner)

With craft beer and local breweries on the rise, here’s a brief guide to some of the best breweries — and what they offer — in Hamilton County.

Union Brewing Company

Address: 622 S Range Line Rd., Carmel Hours: Noon to 9 p.m. Sunday, 4 to 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 3 p.m. to 1 a.m. Friday and noon to 1 a.m. Saturday Best beer: Java Diffie Review: I typically am not a dark beer drinker, but this collaboration between Union Brewing Company and Java Coffeehouse really hit my taste buds right. Union Brewing Company serves cask beers, which means the beer’s carbonation occurs naturally. The beer is stored in a cask with sugar, which the beer yeast consumes and then turns the product into a carbonated brew. Cask-brewed beers have a creamier mouthfeel and not as much bite from the carbonation. Since UBC’s brews are unique, I suggest ordering a flight so you can try several at a time. UBC’s samples are sold separately, at $2.50 each, and are 5 oz. pours. I sampled the Java Diffie (my favorite), the Triple Zeroes (very dry, but delicious), Under the Table (a Beligan strong beer, which owner Nathan Doyle describes as “big and boozy”) and Fred’s Red Ale. Website: unionbrewingco.com

Upland Carmel Tap House

Address: 820 E. 116th St., Carmel Hours: Noon to midnight Sunday, 11 a.m. to midnight Monday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. Friday and Saturday. Best beer: Champagne Velvet, a pilsner. Review: Upland’s best deal is definitely its flight of seven 6 oz. beers for $9.95. Five are from Upland’s year-round menu: Dragonfly IPA, Upland Wheat, Champagne Velvet, Campside Pale Ale and Bad Elmer’s Porter. The person ordering gets to pick the other two from the seasonal menu. If it’s available, definitely check out the Latitude Adjustment. Upland has a quiet, beautiful patio that is the best environment to enjoy its excellent beers. Website: uplandbeer.com

Four Day Ray

Address: 11671 Lantern Rd., Fishers Hours: 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday and Monday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday. Best beer: Blood Orange Blonde, an American blonde ale Review: Four Day Ray is spacious and an excellent place to go if you want to pair a hearty dinner with locally brewed beer. Website: fourdayray.com

From left, Christine and Rob Paugh (Westfield) and Anna and Claudio Bertolini (Carmel) joined more than 5,000 guests June 14 at Zoobilation. The annual event raised money for care of the Indianapolis Zoo’s 1,200 animals and 46,000 plants and supports local education and global conservation. Indianapolis-area restaurants and beverage companies donated delicious food and spirits, and area bands provided live entertainment. Where’s Amy loved mingling with some of the coolest cats in town and celebrating the night for a great cause. For more, visit indianapoliszoo.com (Photos by Amy Pauszek)

The Cake Bake Shop

Commentary by Anna Skinner Address: 6515 Carrollton Ave., Indianapolis What to get: Lemon Blueberry Cake Price: $12.95 Anna’s take: The Cake Bake Shop by Gwendolyn Rogers is an adorable little shop, adorned with flowers and all things girly, nestled in Broad Ripple that serves up delicious, giant slices of cake. Other menu items, like quiche and sandwiches, also are available. I went for a birthday celebration (my birthday is June 25, which just happens to be when this print edition is published, so feel free to email me and wish me the happiest of days), and ordered a slice of the Lemon Blueberry Cake. As the name implies,

The Lemon Blueberry Cake is layered with lemon curd and fresh blueberries. (Photo by Anna Skinner)

it is lemon cake layered with house-made lemon curd and blueberries. It is decorated with fresh blueberries and is a refreshing, tasty option for those who like fruity cake. Suggested pairings: JCB No. 69 Rose. This is a sparkling, Brut rose French wine. What’s better than pairing bubbles with cake? $13 per glass or $62 for the bottle.

Notice of Nondiscriminatory Policy as to Students Ephesus Theatre in Turkey. (Photo by Don Knebel)

The Great Theatre of Ephesus Commentary by Don Knebel A dramatic confrontation reported in the New Testament occurred inside a Roman theater in Ephesus. That colosTRAVEL sal theater is still in service today. Ephesus, on the west coast of what is now Turkey, was founded by Greek colonists from across the Aegean Sea in the 10th century B.C. By the third century B.C., the city was famous for the nearby temple of Artemis, an important fertility goddess. Featuring 127 ionic columns and covering 1.6 acres, the temple was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. When the Romans took control of Ephesus in the first century B.C., they made it the capital of the Province of Asia. They reassociated the temple with their goddess Diana and greatly expanded a Greek theater built into a hillside on the north side of the city, creating a seating capacity of 25,000. By the first century A.D., the population of Ephesus was as high as 250,000. According to the Book of Acts, Paul went to Ephesus in about 54 A.D. Local silver-

smiths selling miniature representations of the temple complained that Paul’s teachings about Jesus were endangering their livelihoods by suggesting that Artemis/Diana was not a real god. Residents responded by dragging Paul’s traveling companions into the Great Theatre, where a shouting mob menaced them. The melee ended and the men were released when the city clerk demanded that the silversmiths pursue their grievances in court, warning that they could be charged with provoking a riot. By the time Paul left Ephesus in 56 A.D., the city was home to an important early church. Christian vigilantes destroyed the temple of Artemis/Diana in 401 A.D. after Roman Emperor Theodosius I had outlawed paganism. But the Great Theatre, with its three-story stage house, has survived and is occasionally used for performances, including one by Elton John in 2001. Don Knebel is a local resident who works for Barnes & Thornburg LLP. For the full column visit donknebel.com. You may contact him at news@currentzionsville. com.
