Airport Authority Board for 22 years and is its vice president. He serves as Parliamentarian of the Council and on the ARPA Board, the Sheriff’s Committee and Special Projects Oversight Committee, according to his campaign. ALAINA SHONKWILER Republican Alaina Shonkwiler, a Noblesville resident, has filed to run for the Indiana House of Representatives District 29 seat. The district includes Noblesville. Shonkwiler’s announcement follows incumbent Chuck Goodrich’s decision Shonkwiler not to seek reelection. “I have spent my life in Noblesville and this community is where Jason and I chose to raise our family,” Shonkwiler stated. Shonkwiler is a manager in government advisory with Katz, Sapper & Miller, an advisory, tax and audit firm. She stated she has expertise in local government and economic development. A Noblesville High School graduate, Shonkwiler has previously had roles with the Noblesville Chamber of Commerce, the City of Noblesville and Noblesville Schools. “As I seek your vote to be our next state representative, I will be the passionate conservative fighter we need,” Shonkwiler stated. She is married to Jason Shonkwiler, a Noblesville Police Department sergeant and school resource officer at Noblesville High
School. STEVE NATION Hamilton County Councilor Steve Nation announced his candidacy for reelection Jan. 10. The primary is in May. Nation, a Noblesville resident, stated he is seeking a second term because “there is more work to be done.” “If the people of Hamilton Nation County permit me to continue to serve, we will deliver on the county’s comprehensive response to behavioral health with an Assessment Center, which will enable more accurate diagnoses and treatment plans; the creation of a domestic violence shelter in the county; and the River Road Public Safety Training Facility,” Nation stated. Nation was a leader in the creation of Hamilton County’s Youth Assistance Programs and helped found and launch the Pursuit Institute, according to his campaign. In 2017, Nation was named Person of the Year by the International Association of Truancy and Dropout Prevention. In 2018, he was awarded the Sagamore of the Wabash by Gov. Eric Holcomb. Nation serves as board president for Indiana Fallen Heroes Foundation and is secretary of the Noblesville Elementary Football League. Prior to being elected to the council, Nation served four terms as prosecuting attorney for Hamilton County and was a Hamilton County Superior Court judge for four terms.

Coxhall Gardens visitors will soon have the opportunity through virtual reality to experience what it was like to live in the historic Williams House on the property. Hamilton County Parks and Recreation, which manages the park at 11677 Towne Rd. in Carmel, has collaborated with Carmel-based Eidolon to incorporate a state-ofClevenger the-art augmented reality experience for visitors that allows history to come to life as they “meet” a virtual representation of pioneer builder John Williams and learn more about his family and the building’s history. The Williams House is one of only a few remaining Italianate architectural-style historic homes in the county. It is being renovated and is temporarily not accessible to the public, which inspired the project to allow its history to continue to be told. Once renovations are complete, tours of the interior will become available again, and the augmented reality option will be offered indefinitely. “The Williams project allows people to gain a more personal experience and interpretation that they can do however they would like without listening to a tour guide in a large group,” said Jordan Clevenger, CEO and lead designer for Eidolon. “They can experience it at their own pace.” Smartphone users can download an app that will allow them to connect to the structure’s story using augmented reality. A digitally animated likeness of Williams will take visitors back in time to 1865, when the home was built. Clevenger said the project involved a great amount of research to make the experience as accurate as possible. “On the tech side, the main focus was on making sure that John Williams was as true to himself as possible, focusing on making sure there was extensive research into his likeness, outfit, even his voice,” Clevenger said. “We spent time making sure that all of these crucial details are very specific so people are getting the closest representation of him as possible, so the experience was more personal.”

Fishers senior basketball player improves with age By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Fishers High School basketball coach Garrett Winegar is convinced the best is yet to come for senior Keenan Garner. “He is just scratching the surface,” Winegar said. Garner, a 6-foot-6 guard/forward, doesn’t turn 18 until April. “Also, with living on a U.S. Army base in Germany for seven years prior to returning to the States last year, Keenan has not played as much basketball as many of the kids in the States have,” Winegar said. “On top of all that, he works his butt off, is a terrific kid and leader and is going to do what it takes to continue to grow.” Garner, who moved to Fishers in September 2022, was averaging more than 16 points and eight rebounds as of Jan. 18. The Tigers were 14-0 at the time. “Keenan has improved the most with his ball handling, passing and finishing and his overall game IQ and feel for the game,” Winegar said. “He has really developed into a true wing/guard who has the ability to also play in the post. Keenan has worked

He also has worked a lot on his shot and is knocking in shots when he takes them.” Garner said everyone has to play a bigger role after Jalen Haralson transferred to La Lumiere, a prep school in LaPorte. Haralson averaged 23.4 points as a sophomore last season. “It took a lot of people buying in the

offseason and really just believing we can win any game we go into,” Garner said. “We have really good team chemistry. We do things on and off the court. Once you have that relationship off the court, it translates to on the court. We’re unselfish and we trust each other in the big moments.”
Garner said his biggest leap from last season has been as a leader. “I’m teaching everybody everything I can to have a really good senior season,” Garner said. “I’m focusing on all parts of my game, not just scoring but rebounding and assisting. I’m trying to be a more versatile player. I’m trying to do a lot of everything, not just one thing.” Garner, who was averaging 63 percent shooting from the field, averaged 7.9 points on 55 percent shooting last season. “We have a lot of good shooters,” he said. “I feel like everyone on our team can step up and hit a shot, and that opens up driving lanes.” In Germany, Garner said his high school played against other schools from military bases. Garner began playing basketball when he was about 11 years old. He was trained and coached by Mario Coursey for approximately five years. “He helped me fall in love with the game and it grew from there,” he said. Garner has NCAA Division I offers from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and Eastern Illinois, in addition to some NAIA offers.

Colleagues have fond memories of local Boys & Girls Club namesake Soni Sheehan
By Elissa Maudlin elissa@youarecurrent.com Staff at the Tom & Soni Sheehan Boys & Girls Club of Noblesville said that the late Sondra “Soni” Sheehan’s legacy is hard to sum up but she was renowned for showing kids they matter and promoting hope and kindness. Abby Stutesman, director of club operations, said someone with her “generous heart only comes around so often.” Soni Sheehan died Dec. 22, 2023, at age 83. She and her husband donated money for the naming rights for the club’s building. Executive Director Becky Terry said the Boys & Girls Club “couldn’t have asked for a more natural fit” for the building’s name. Sheehan was also a longtime member of the Ladies Auxiliary, according to Kim Hirschfeld, a Ladies Auxiliary member and Boys & Girls Club board member. The auxiliary raises money for the club to defray costs for items, such as field trips and new tents and canoes for camp. In 1997, Sheehan was honored as Volunteer of the Year for the Boys & Girls Club. “Soni was more quiet and in the background, and she got things done but she did it in a much more quiet and subtle way of doing things,” Hirschfeld said. Sheehan provided cookies and punch to members at the UpTop Shop, a holiday shop where items are priced 25 cents. Sheehan would set up candlesticks on a linen tablecloth for the event. Stutesman said the UpTop Shop was Sheehan’s “pride and joy” because she could engage with the youth. “Some kids don’t know that. They don’t understand linen tablecloths and candlelight dinners,” Stutesman said. “She always made sure that on that event that they felt special, no matter what, that they understood that this was a special event, and it was solely for our club kids.” Hirschfeld’s favorite memory of Sheehan was seeing her behind the cookie table, “just looking (the kids) in the eyes and seeing into their souls” and talking to them. If a kid needed medical help, Stutesman said Sheehan would ask staff members about the child and encourage the child’s family to seek help from the Thomas P. and Sondra D. Sheehan Charitable Foundation,

which helps children who have medical challenges. “(Soni) loved kids and wanted to make sure that they had what they needed to be successful, to be who they were meant to be at the highest level,” Terry said. Stutesman said Sheehan was a strong but quiet leader. “She had a quiet strength. That’s how I
would describe her,” Terry said. “She was a force, but her force of nature wasn’t one that was, like, exuberant. It was a quiet strength, and when she said something, you listened.” When Terry first met Sheehan at the UpTop Shop, she could tell how important making the event special for the kids was to Sheehan.

items, Stutesman said. New or gently used items are donated by community members. Members of the auxiliary are on-site to help wrap and serve cookies and punch.
“Her sweet soul is going to be missed,” Hirschfeld said. “You don’t find that personality easily in this fast-paced world we live in.” Soni’s husband Tom Sheehan lives in Noblesville. His passion and support for youth has “been unwavering for decades,” according to the club’s Director of Development Nathan Helm. “His above-and-beyond commitment to ensuring success for future generations has always been second to none,” Helm stated. “Without Tom & Soni, the Club would not be making the impact it is today.” ON THE COVER: Soni Sheehan with cookies and punch at the UpTop Shop. ATI actors get their kicks on ‘Route 66’ By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Craig Underwood had so much fun with Actors Theatre of Indiana’s presentation of “Route 66” in 2012, he was MUSICAL eager to travel down that road again. The 2000 Hamilton Southeastern High School graduate, who is based in New York City, returns to play the same character he did in 2012 in the musical about traveling the famous route in ATI’s production set for Feb. 2-18 at the Studio Theater at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel. “I’m excited to do it again,” Underwood said. “I had such a great time last time. I’m a little nervous because I am 12 years older, but I think it’ll be really fun.” Underwood contacted ATI when he learned it was presenting the show again. “Because it’s four people that have to sing together, it’s very specific,” he said. “I totally understand if I’m not the right fit this time, but I’d jump at the chance to do it. I love working for ATI.” The four men play different roles in vignettes, but all go by their real first names in each vignette. The music follows the area of the U.S. and the time from the 1950s to the mid-1960s. “I love when it gets to the Beach Boystype music,” Underwood said. “I think it amps it up and all the fun harmonies, and by that time we as performers are pretty tired because we’re like an hour and 20 minutes into the one-and-a-half-hour show. I think it gets us going again. It’s like a whole breath of fresh air. It just shows kind of how the music shifted from the ‘50s to the ‘60s.” Cynthia Collins, an ATI co-founder and Carmel resident, is directing and choreographing the musical. “From start to finish, it’s this high-energy journey on Route 66,” Collins said. “The show goes from Chicago to Los Angeles, and the music follows the journey. It starts out with bebop music from the ’50s.” The musical concludes with songs such as “Dead Man’s Curve,” “The Little Old Lady From Pasadena” and “GTO.” There are audio commercials from the

Eric Olson, a Fishers resident, wasn’t familiar with the show but saw a video of the previous time ATI performed “Route 66.” “It’s really fun to hear a mix of songs and you are like, ‘I’ve known that song my whole life,’” said Olson, who works for Indiana Repertory Theatre as institutional giving manager and is in his fourth production with ATI. “Songs like ‘King of the Road’ mixed in with songs you’ve never heard before, but (it’s) a great tune. It’s a lot of work in a little time. These shows have a way of being terrifying in the beginning, thinking, ‘There is no way I can ever do this,’ and then a few days in, it’s ‘Hey, I’m doing this and it feels great.’” Each performer has a few solo songs. Brandon Vos, a Camby resident, is the music director. “It’s a fun show because I think a lot of the tunes are familiar to everybody,” Vos said. “It’s the boogie-boogie surfer rock and Beach Boys-type stuff. It’s just a lot of energy and a lot of fun for us and the
audience, too. There are participation moments a couple times.” Vos said there are more than 30 songs, mostly between 2 and 4 minutes long. “I’m in charge of specific parts of the music itself but they all bring their own personalities to it,” Vos said. Vos has worked with Indianapolis resident Brett Mutter at Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre. Mutter previously acted in ATI’s “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.” “I love tight harmonies and tight quartet singing,” Mutter said. Cast member Kieran Danaan, a New York City resident, made his ATI debut in “Mr. Confidential” in May 2023. “The four of us in this cast get to be so versatile,” Danaan said. “We get to explore different sides of ourselves. The four of us are witty, so it’s going to be a good time.” Danaan said most of the music was new to him. “The music is very relaxing but it’s also upbeat,” he said. “The music has a good message.” For more, visit atistage.org.

Perfect soup/sandwich combos Commentary by Mark LaFay There is something very remarkable about freezing weather and the way it makes us all state the obvious: COMFORT FOOD “Wow, it’s cold outside.” But, hey, it is cold outside, and it has me thinking about some really good comfort food. I’ve got four go-to soup-and-sandwich combos that are perfect for chilly weather. Cozy up by the fireplace or Netflix, and the combos below are sure to be great warming companions. First up, you can’t beat the classic tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwich. It’s like they were made for each other. You’ve got that rich, somewhat-sweet tomato soup that’s just begging for a dunk of crispy, melty grilled cheese. It’s simple, delicious and never gets old. Dress up your sandwich with some bacon, bacon jam or hot pepper jam. Now, how about mixing it up a bit with French onion soup and a roast beef sandwich? This is a bit fancier, but, oh, man, it’s worth it. That savory onion soup with a melted Gruyère topping is something else. Pair that with a roast beef sandwich — think
crusty bread, a bit of horseradish kick and some fresh arugula. It’s a combo that’s a bit fancy but still down-to-earth good. Chicken noodle soup and a turkey club sandwich is where it’s at if you’re looking for something on the lighter side. You’ve got your classic chicken noodle soup, warm and comforting, right next to a stacked turkey club. Crisp lettuce, tomato, bacon, a smear of mayo — it’s fresh, it’s filling, and it hits the spot without weighing you down. Last but not least for all you seafood lovers, clam chowder is a must. It’s creamy, hearty and packed with clams. Pair it with a hot and delicious tuna melt. It’s simple, but, boy, does it complement that chowder well. So, there you go, four perfect soup-andsandwich pairs for when the weather has got you wanting something warm and satisfying. Give ‘em a try, and I bet they’ll become your winter favorites, too.
