Zionsville to address Red for Ed concerns By Jarred Meeks jarred@youarecurrent.com Through the passage of a tentative collective bargaining agreement and two referendums, EDUCATION Zionsville Community Schools has taken measures to address concerns voiced by Indiana teachers at the Nov. 19 Red for Ed Action Day. The Zionsville Community Schools Board of Trustees gave unanimous support for the collective bargaining agreement forged with the Zionsville Educators Association. Teachers will see base salary increases in both contract years, 2019-20 and 2020-21. The starting salary will be $45,000, up from $42,000, for new teachers hired in the fall of 2020. The board’s decision came after voters passed two referendums Nov. 5: An $89 million construction referendum, which will allow for a new elementary school to be built, and an operational referendum to manage growing enrollment. Suzi Boyett, a kindergarten teacher at Harney Elementary School in the Lebanon Community School Corp. and president of the Lebanon Classroom Teachers Association, said the moves address some but not all of the Red For Ed Action Day’s concerns. Boyett said expanding class sizes are one of the issues that teachers rallied around Nov. 19., and the two referendums Zionsville Community Schools passed will help alleviate some of the growing pains. In addition, the bargaining agreement will help offset stagnant wages with a compensation model that will be competitive with the area, she said. On Nov. 19, Indiana teachers wearing red clothes arrived en masse at the Statehouse in Indianapolis to show support for what was deemed Red for Ed Action Day. Ralliers tried to

make their presence known by having large groups positioned at each entrance to greet lawmakers as they arrived for the start of the 2020 legislative session. Later in the morning, an estimated crowd of 20,0000 educators gathered on the Statehouse lawn. Many area schools closed as a result of the number of teachers that took the day off, but Zionsville schools remained open. “ZCS was well-represented by teachers who took personal business days to participate in the Red for Ed rally at the Statehouse,” Zionsville Community Schools Supt. Scott Robison said. “ZCS serves 7,400 children every day, and we are best at doing this well whenever we can be in session as scheduled.” While the referendums and bargaining agreement address some concerns, Boyett said there is still work to be done. Boyett said many teachers still want change in standardized testing, which she said “is too much on the students” and constantly changes, making it difficult for teachers to prepare. One of Red for Ed’s primary goals is to pass legislation to protect teachers and their careers from poor state standardized test scores.

Teachers also have voiced displeasure with the requirements to renew teacher’s licenses, specifically the House Enrolled Act 1002 requirement that mandates teachers participate in a 15-hour externship at a company. District 29 Sen. J.D. Ford (D-Indianapolis), who represents Boone County’s Eagle Township, has announced an education bill he plans to file for the 2020 session that would repeal the requirement. “Indiana State Teachers Association’s Red For Ed Action Day will go down in history as a significant turning point for public education in Indiana,” Indiana State Teachers Association President Keith Gambill said in a statement. “Twenty-thousand educators, parents and community members rallied for investing the budget surplus in teacher compensation, holding students, teachers and communities harmless from ILEARN and repealing the unnecessary PGP/ externship requirements for teachers. “Although legislators didn’t take action today, we will be watching in January for bold action for our students. ISTA is just getting started and our members will not stop fighting for their students and profession.”

After a health scare, a Zionsville Community Schools bus driver has watched the comEDUCATION munity rally to support him through a GoFundMe page. Doug Crowder, who has driven for ZCS for five years, suffered a minor stroke at home Nov. 12. As a result, he can’t drive a bus for more than a year because of Dept. of Transportation regulations. Single and living alone, Crowder was hospitalized without another income source. A friend and his familiy decided it would be a good idea to start a GoFundMe campaign on the crowdfunding platform’s website. They thought residents might want to help, and they were correct. Not long after, several people donated and sent best wishes to the man who has shuttled Zionsville students, athletes, marching bands,

show choirs and other student organizations for several years. “I have hauled a lot of these kids around and have gotten to know a lot of people,” Crowder said. “A lot of people have been reaching out to (ask) how they can help.” After a stint in rehab, Crowder was released from the hospital Nov. 21, but he will need to continue with outpatient rehab for several months. The stroke affected his left leg, and he requires a walker for the foreseeable future. But he said that won’t keep him from attending home basketball games and other sporting events this

winter. “I’m a sports guy, so I like driving the (sports) teams to their games and back,” Crowder said. “I do pretty much every game, as far as the high school sports go, every football game. And I go to home games, too, so I support them throughout the year, no matter what they’re doing.” As of press time, Crowder’s GoFundMe page has raised $4,230 of its $5,000 goal. He said the experience of seeing so many help him has been overwhelming. “When you drive a bus, you touch a lot of people’s lives, and you don’t realize it,” Crowder said. “That’s one thing that has humbled me a little bit. You don’t realize you’re touching all these lives. Not only with the kids, but parents, also. That’s what’s really choked me up about the whole situation. You think you’re just out here doing a job, but you’re actually doing more than a job.” To donate, search “Doug’s Drive to Recovery” at gofundme.com.

Recollections of Temple Stephens Commentary by Ward Degler

I was shopping at the grocery store the other day, when suddenly the aisle partially was PLAIN TALK blocked by a clerk stocking shelves. It brought back a memory of another time and another store. My junior year in high school, I worked part-time at the local Temple Stephens grocery store in Jefferson City, Mo. The manager was a crusty Scot by the name of Otis MacDonald. I never saw him smile, and I’m quite sure he had eyes in the back of his head. Any time I would take a break, Otis would whip around the corner and remind me he wasn’t paying me to relax. He treated everyone like that. Essentially, my job at the store was whatever needed doing next. I manned the broom and swept the aisles, helped unload trucks, bagged groceries and carried them out to customers’ cars, adamantly refused all tips (Temple Stephens policy), washed the store windows after the weekend specials that had been advertised in big bold letters were over, pumped vinegar into jugs from a 55-gallon oak barrel, “crisped up” the produce section and even candled eggs brought in by local farmers. Occasionally, I worked behind the meat counter, cutting up chickens and fitting the pieces attractively into paper cartons. One especially busy week I learned how to cut up a side of beef. Scary because I feared the heavy carcass would fall and crush

me to death. It was behind the meat counter where I also learned how to sharpen a knife with a sharpening steel – a skill I use to this day. The only job I hated at Temple Stephens was stocking shelves. The company had a policy that shelves were to be stocked at night when the store was closed. It was always Saturday night, and I seldom got home before midnight. We couldn’t cut the boxes open; they had to be carefully pulled apart and sent back to the distributor to be used again. And we couldn’t just load cans and jars onto the shelves like they do today, either. With each stocking job, I carried a set of pricing markers – short wooden dowels with rubber stamps on one end. Each stamp was a particular price – everything from 19 cents to 89 cents. If a price got smeared, I had to clean it off with alcohol and re-stamp. The pay back then was minimum wage – 75 cents an hour, boosted to $1 an hour on stocking nights. My average weekly paycheck was $23. Temple Stephens the man was the first grocery store owner in the nation to open a chain of stores. In 1930, he owned 19 stores throughout Missouri. The company went through various configurations before closing for good in 1993. Ward Degler lives in Zionsville with his wife. Zionsville resident to close Form Plus Function By Anna Skinner anna@youarecurrent.com Zionsville resident Helmut Fortense couldn’t find a buyer for his business, a mid-century RETIREMENT modern furniture store, Form Plus Function at 1300 E. 86th St., Suite 29C in Indianapolis, so the business will close Dec. 31. Fortense has owned the business since 1996. “I’ll be 78 years old next year, and it’s time to do something different,” Fortense said. “I want to enjoy my life as it is with my wife, and I want to do some traveling. I want to do some things I just don’t have the time to running the business. I wasn’t able to find a buyer for it, and that’s too bad. I would have loved to have a successor, and that didn’t work out, so now we have a closing sale.” Fortense was born in 1941 and grew up in post-war Germany. “We were what you call poor people,” he said. “We lived in a two-room apartment with my sister and my parents until I was 14 years old, so luxuries didn’t exist.” As a child, Fortense said he would look in the windows of furniture stores and liked what he saw. So as an adult, he launched Form Plus Function. “I love design and have always loved design,” he said. “It was part of my childhood.” He describes mid-century modern furniture as functional, bare bones and orderly. “A bench is just a bench, just maybe four legs and a platform on top,” he said. “Mid-century modern architecture is big windows, and you don’t feel locked out of an environment.

Helmut Fortense will close Form Plus Function, a mid-century modern furniture store in Indianapolis, Dec. 31. (Submitted photo)

It also means you don’t overcrowd a room. You just have the necessities. You don’t have shelves full of knickknacks.” Except for one brand that he is unable to discount more than 15 percent, items in the Form Plus Function liquidation sale range from 30 to 60 percent off. Prices range from $800 to $12,000. “If you are a bargain hunter and have said, ‘I always wanted this piece but couldn’t afford it,’ you might be able to find something on our shelves,” he said. “The last 10 days we have sold quite a bit.” Out of $1 million in inventory, a third has sold. “It’s been a wonderful experience to bring this to Indiana,” Fortense said. “I met about 20,000 real nice people, and that is a memory of my being a furniture dealer, the relationships. It was not just selling bananas from a street cart, but you go to their homes. You get to know them and they get to know you. I have personal friendships with several of those people, friendships that will endure after we close.” For more, visit formplusfunction.net.

Hall to induct new class By Jarred Meeks jarred@youarecurrent.com The Boone County Basketball Hall of Fame will announce nominations for the second inBASKETBALL duction class this month. In April, the Boone County Hall of Fame inducted its first class. It automatically inducted every basketball player in the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame who graduated from a Boone County school – including the likes of Rick Mount, a 1966 Lebanon graduate, Purdue University star and Indiana Pacers player. This year, the hall took nominations for its next induction class until Dec. 1. It will, after reviewing the qualifications of each male and female nominee, announce its next induction class on its website, boonecountyhoops.com, and Facebook page, Boone County Basketball Hall of Fame. state’s birthplaces of basketball. Seven of the first eight boys high school state championship teams were in Boone County or neighboring Montgomery County. “In the early days, this was the center of basketball,” White said. In addition, White and other hall officials are contributing two $500 scholarships to graduating Boone County seniors each year to help give back to the area.

U.S. Sens. Todd Young (R-Ind.) and Mike Braun (R-Ind.) recently announced the COVER STORY Indiana Dept. of Transportation will be awarded a $16 million grant for an upcoming I-65 project in Boone County. Funds for the I-65 Mobility and Access Project will be allocated through a Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development Grant from the U.S. Dept. of Transportation. The project aims to address community needs for modernized transportation infrastructure by constructing an additional interchange at C.R. 550 S. and modifying three I-65 interchanges in Boone County. In previous years, officials determined a new C.R. 550 S. interchange had merit and would significantly benefit the Ind. 267 and Whitestown Parkway interchanges by alleviating traffic congestion and improving safety in the main outlets of rapidly growing Whitestown. “As the Crossroads of America, it is critical to have a reliable and safe transportation corridor in Indiana for the continuous movement of people and goods,” Young stated in a media release. “As the primary artery between Indianapolis and Chicago, improvements along I-65 will ensure Boone County remains a regional logistics hub and has the capacity for continued economic growth.” “Indiana moves American business, and for us to continue serving as the Crossroads of America we need to constantly improve our roads, bridges, and interchanges,” Braun stated. “This grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation will allow Whitestown to continue to flourish, and Indiana’s infrastructure to keep

ESSAY

LETTER

Enlightened path

This ‘racist’ votes for Trump

Commentary by Terry Anker Early 20th-century U.S. Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. wrote, “But when men have realized that time has upset many fighting faiths, they may come to believe even more than they believe the very foundations of their own conduct that the ultimate good desired is better reached by free trade in ideas – that the best test of truth is the power of the thought to get itself accepted in the competition of the market, and that truth is the only ground upon which their wishes safely can be carried out.” Holmes was responsible for a doctrine used by our nation’s high court to restrict First Amendment claims to free assembly, speech or press, known widely through one line of his opinion, “clear and present danger.” Later, an important lower court jurist, Learned Hand, supported the notion, adding that restrictions on these American freedoms could only come to prevent “imminent lawless action.” It was a different time. Socialism, especially the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics and the National Socialist German Workers’ Party, i.e., the Nazis, was then known to be a verified threat to freedom. Still, jurists were slow to restrict the exchange of ideas, even vastly unpopular ones. The minority voice had to be protected, if only so a debate could be preserved. How often did the majority prove, in the long run, to be on the enlightened path? Is it any different now? Terry Anker is an associate editor of Current Publishing, LLC. Hitting the Hamiltonian lottery Commentary by Danielle Wilson Friends, I won the lottery! Not that lottery. You think I’d still be writing this column if HUMOR I were a newly minted millionaire? Puh-lease. Maybe I’d pen one final commentary at 36,000 feet aboard my new Gulf Stream en route to Davos, but that’d be it. So long, suckers! No, I won two $10 tickets to “Hamilton” in Chicago! I know! I’ve seen the musical before but have been wanting to take my youngest daughter, Maddie. I thought we’d go to the touring one here in Indianapolis this month, but the tickets start at $175, and that’s for a weekday matinee with a “limited view,” i.e., “behind a giant pole.” Which makes absolutely no sense to me. It’s not the original cast, it’s not Broadway and it’s been out for almost five years. I just couldn’t stomach shelling out that much dough for a show, even one as fantastic as “Hamilton.” Then, I discovered the lottery. I installed the “Hamilton” app, signed

up for email notifications and have literally been entering daily since 2017. Chicago, Madison, Wis., Milwaukee, Louisville. If I could drive there in a reasonable amount of time, I threw my tricorne hat into the ring. Because that’s the thing. If you win, you’re given only four hours to accept the tickets for a next-day production. Yowsers. When a “Congratulations” popped up in my inbox, I nearly wet my pants. After all this time, it was happening! So, for 20 bucks, Maddie and I were able to see “Hamilton” in Chicago. Our seats weren’t perfect (we were under a substantial can-only-glimpse-feetif-they-sing-from-the-second-storyof-the-set overhang), but definitely worth it. I can’t believe I won the lottery! Peace out.

Editor, Regarding Christina Downey’s comments (a past letter available at youarecurrent.com), what gives her the right to call anybody names? I wish people would repeat all of President Trump’s remarks. Telling someone to go back to their country, fix their problems, then come back and tell us how you did it. Finish the statement. Can you imagine what would have happened to all of us “racists” had we taken Obama’s statements out of context? I don’t like being called a racist, it’s getting tiring. It’s beginning to just be another word we shrug off because it has been used so much. Just look at the accomplishments (Trump) has made. Obama divided America, and Trump is trying to restore it. Unemployment is down, the economy is growing. I would say that anyone who votes for the other side is a socialist and agrees with the Antifa group. We are no more racist than you are, and after reading her article, she is more so. I’m surprised at Current as well. So, this “racist” is voting for Trump in 2020. Deal with it. Carol Powell, Noblesville

Back pain is a major problem in this nation. It’s the second-biggest reason people don’t go to work HUMOR in the morning. The first reason is not having a job. I have a longstanding relationship with my back, but ironically, most of my problems come from sitting too long. I read somewhere that while stationed at the computer, I should put my butt at the outermost edge of the chair. I tried that, slid off and almost broke my jaw on the keyboard. My health care providers have tried desperately to help me correct my sloppy posture. I have a genetic predisposition - sometimes I have pain in dis position, sometimes in dat position. I’ve been going to a chiropractor who uses the traditional approach practiced by the Mafia for generations: He roughs me up, inflicts pain and then takes my money. Time for a

different approach. Irwin, my new physical therapist, instructed me to stand like I normally do when I talk to someone. He said he prefers to observe his subjects in their natural setting. This sounded a lot like Jane Goodall justifying her first expense report. I don’t know about you, but my extremities pretty much fall into place on their own when I’m chatting with someone. I don’t think about where to put my right leg, how to hold my head or how to position each arm. I just start yacking away, although I do try not to put my foot in my mouth. When I got myself into my normal stance, the therapist shook his head. “You lean too far to the left,” he said, which is exactly what WIBC said to me in l995 when they fired me from my talk show. On the massage table, Irwin rotated my head and neck to assess my range of motion. “I don’t think your spine has a good relationship with your legs,” he

commented. He was probably right. I was sure that through the years there had been very little conversation between the two. I would have overheard it. To improve my posture, he suggested walking with my arms at my sides, with the palms facing forward, opened wide and turned skyward. I tried this while I was strolling downtown later that day. It felt odd, except I did score some loose change from sympathetic pedestrians. Irwin told me to imagine there is a string running up my spine and through my head to the ceiling when I walk. My next appointment is with a neurologist. Not for my spine, but because I walked headfirst into a wall.

Bays, Schaab identify with ‘Elf’ roles at Civic Theatre By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com For Matt Bays, his role could be considered a slight bit of typecasting. PERFORMANCE Bays relates to his character Buddy in “Elf The Musical.” “He’s a happy-go-lucky person, and so am I,” Bays said Bays plays Buddy in Civic Theatre’s production of “Elf The Musical,” which runs from Dec. 6 to Dec. 28 at The Tarkington at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel. The story centers on a young orphan who accidentally climbs into Santa’s bag of gifts and is transported to the North Pole, where he is raised as an elf by Santa’s elves. “I thought maybe I was too old for the part, but it worked out,” said Bays, a 49-year-old Westfield resident. Bays said he was familiar with the 2003 movie starring Will Ferrell as Buddy but had never seen the 2010 Broadway musical, which was inspired by the movie. “It’s one of our staples I watch every year with my two daughters,” Bays said of the movie. “Buddy is spontaneous. He’s loving and he’s a little naive, a trusting individual.” The show is Bays’ second with Civic. He was in “Anything Goes” in 2018. Bays did not do musical theater for 25 years because he was doing other music in church. Noblesville resident Emily Schaab sees a bit of herself in her character of Jovie. “I find the character true to who I am a little bit,” Schaab said. “She’s a little sarcastic and a little sassy. It’s been a lot of fun.” Schaab said the music is fun and

heart-warming. “Jovie has one song by herself, and I sing throughout the show with Buddy and the ensemble,” Schaab said. The show is Schaab’s third with Civic in 2019 and her first lead Civic role. She previously was in “Newsies” and “Mamma Mia!” “We’re having a blast. That’s something that’s been the case at all three shows I’ve done at Civic,” Schaab said. “It’s always a good environment.” Clay Middle School eighth-grader Ben Boyce, who plays Michael Hobbs, said this is his biggest role in a Civic Theatre main stage show. “I like the role because I’m able to develop my character,” Boyce said. “It’s a very fun role to play. I love the movie ‘Elf,’ so it was fun to bring the role to the stage.” Boyce said he watched some musical versions to help better develop his character.

“I have to speak with a New York accent, so developing that is a little hard,” Boyce said. Boyce appeared as Dill Harris in “To Kill a Mockingbird” earlier this year on the main stage. He was in Jr. Civic’s productions of “James and the Giant Peach” in 2018 and “Shrek The Musical” in 2019. He had to learn a Southern accent for Dill and a British accent for James. Bishop Chatard High School senior Nate Schlabach, a Fishers resident, plays Charlie, an elf. “I also get to be part of the ensemble and take part in a few of the crazy, fun dance numbers,” Schlabach said. “I always loved the movie. It’s fun to do a high-pitched elf voice. It comes pretty natural to do that voice, but it’s something I never tried on stage before.” He also was in “Newsies” and “Mamma Mia!” For more, visit civictheatre.org.

Carmel resident directs Madrigal shows editorial@youarecurrent.com North Central High School sophomore Lucy Price has two main reasons for enjoying her first year as a member of the school’s King’s Court Singers. “I love the songs we perform and the outfits we wear,” said Price, whose father, James, lives in Carmel. “We sing a song with just the girls that I really like. I like the Christmas music the best. My favorite song we are doing now is ‘Jingle Bells.’” The singing group, which performs in Renaissance-era costumes, is directed by longtime Carmel resident Joyce Click. The Madrigal Dinner is set for 6 p.m. Dec. 6 and the Madrigal Luncheon is at noon Dec. 7 at the Knights of Columbus, 2100 E. 71st St., Indianapolis. Tickets are available at Eventbrite. com.

Cantus to perform concert By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Cantus has a unique approach to creating music. The Minneapolis-based MUSIC men’s vocal ensemble doesn’t have a music director, so the eight singers share responsibilities. “We are the only full-time ensemble in the world, I believe, that is artist-led,” baritone David Geist said. “Every show you see is an equal combination of all the work we put together. When we are programming shows, we bring the theme and the concept. “Oftentimes, we’ll have a big whiteboard with 100 songs, and we narrow it down to 20 for a performance. We are very collaborative.” Cantus will present “Three Tales of Christmas” at 8 p.m. Dec. 7 at the Palladium at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel. Stephenie Soohyun Park is returning to Indiana Repertory Theatre’s “A Christmas Carol,” but her PLAY assignment is a bit more difficult. Park made her IRT debut in “A Christmas Carol” as Christmas Past, and she is now playing the roles of Belle, Lady of Charity, Prudence and Laundress. “I’ve always thought Belle was a difficult role because her story is so fast. In 10 minutes of stage time, she falls in love, has her heart broken and finds happiness with someone new,” Park said. “I love the challenge, though.” The traditional holiday show began Nov. 16 and runs through Dec. 26. When she was 9 years old, Park played Belinda Cratchit in a community theater production of the show. Park, who grew up in the Chicago suburbs, moved to Indianapolis with

Blueprint for Improvement: Northern Indy functional kitchen Commentary by Larry Greene

Before

THE SOLUTION

After

RSVP TODAY for our

THE CHALLENGE This 1972-built home is in Indianapolis’ Pickwick Commons neighborhood. The popular ‘70s split-level design didn’t give the family the space they craved for spending time together and hosting friends and family. They wanted to create a larger kitchen that opened into a brand new great room which would offer plenty of room for family activities.

Music Under the Stars! July 26th from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m.

1. The exterior wall was removed and columns added to provide structural support and architectural interest between the kitchen and the new great room. 2. The kitchen was expanded into what was the dining room, giving the homeowners more room for maneuvering and a lot more storage. 3. An impressive granite backsplash makes quite a statement over the cooktop and continues to the counters. 4. New maple cabinetry with loads of pull-out shelves and organizers, plus a larger island, provide additional storage and organization. Brief history of Australia’s famous Bondi Beach Commentary by Don Knebel Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia, is one of the world’s most popular beaches. It is particularly popular with visitors from the Northern Hemisphere, who can celebrate Christmas at the TRAVEL beach. Bondi Beach is 4 miles east of the CBD, Sydney’s Central Business District. The word “Bondi” (pronounced bondie) is derived from an Aboriginal word having the same meaning as “surf” in English. In the mid-19th century, the property that included the beach was part of the private “Bondi Estate.” For a time, the owners allowed the public to access the beach, which was famous for the size of its waves. When the owners threatened to block access to the beach, the Municipal Council made it public in 1882. By the 20th century, up to 60,000 people a day were coming to the beach. On Feb. 6, 1938, known as “Black Sunday,” five beachgoers were killed and more than 250 injured when a series of large waves pulled people into the water. Bondi Beach has been the site of efforts to control decency in swimwear for both men and women. In 1935, the local government passed an ordinance regulating the amount of skin that could be shown, leading to American actress Jean Parker being es-

corted off Bondi Beach in 1951 because her bikini was too revealing. The ordinance was repealed in 1961 and topless bathing became popular. On Sept. 26, 2007, 1,010 women wearing tiny bikinis assembled on Bondi Beach. The resulting photograph, published in Cosmopolitan in 2008, established the Guinness record for the largest swimsuit photoshoot. Today, Bondi Beach attracts about 2.5 million visitors a year, many of whom take advantage of the fashionable cafes along the Campbell Parade

that adjoins the beach. Visitors to Bondi Beach can also watch rugby matches played on the beach by the Sydney Roosters.

Engfishing isn’t smart Commentary by Curtis Honeycutt “This is the type of arrant pedantry up with which I will not put.” — Winston S. GRAMMAR GUY Churchill We have probably all written a version of this essay at some point in high school or college: You’ve read the assigned book (OK, “skimmed” is probably more accurate) and there’s a five-page essay due tomorrow. Well, technically it’s due today because it’s 2 a.m. and your paper’s due at 9 a.m. It’s time to “fill the space,” as they say in university circles. You’ve nudged the margins to make them bigger. You’re using Courier New because it takes up more space on the page. Now, it’s time to make your words longer and more intelligent-sounding so you can squeak out a B-minus on this bad boy. You consult your thesaurus for every third word. Somehow, we learn a certain form of writing an essay or paper

that ends up resembling everyone else’s papers, or -- even worse -- an imitation of our professor’s speech patterns. The result is a flowery, academic-sounding, five-page whopper of a nothingburger. You swap out the word “use” for “utilize” or “employ.” You go to great lengths in order to avoid ending a sentence with a preposition, forcing your words to twist and turn into stuffy syntax riddles. You’re verbose to the point of long-windedness. There’s a term for this: Engfish. It’s when we use contrived language for the sake of sounding smart. We use Engfish in our writing and in conversations. By puffing up our discourse, we end up obscuring our intended message.
