Polar Bear Express returns with new route

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com

The Polar Bear Express is back. The Indiana Transportation Museum’s run has returned after a one-year absence, said Cameron Nichols, who is on the board of directors for the Indiana Transportation Museum and is in charge of marketing. The museum is in Forest Park in Noblesville. This is the 22nd year for the Polar Bear Express. It began running just one Saturday that first year in 1995. “In 2015, we ran it on the Nickel Plate Line between Fishers and Noblesville,” Nichols said. “That year we had the best year we ever had, and on that event alone, we had 11,000 ride to the North Pole in Noblesville. During that year, we had a number of people ride for free from various service organizations in Hamilton County. So, it was a very community-centered event, and it was the largest fundraiser for the Indiana Transportation Museum since we are a nonprofit 501c3.” The Polar Bear Express train did not run last year after the Hoosier Heritage Port Authority, which manages the railroad line for Hamilton County, ceased operations

with the museum. The museum has now partnered with U.S. Rail. The Polar Bear Express will return, with passengers departing from Kokomo and Logansport. The opening night will be Nov. 24. The train departs Nov. 24, Dec. 14 and Dec. 21 from Logansport. It leaves from Kokomo all other days of operation. Nichols said guests will board the train decorated for the season and ride the train to the North Pole, seeing Snowflake the Polar Bear, Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus. There will be a story reading and singing. “Each child will receive a stuffed polar

bear to take home from Santa,” Nichols said. “Everyone receives a candy cane, sugar cookie and hot cocoa.” Nichols said it has been a family tradition for many. “We’ve had people from as far as Tennessee and Chicago come to ride it,” he said. Nichols said many families from Hamilton County are planning to continue that tradition despite the shift in departure sites. “Many people are saying it’s just a quick and easy trip up U.S. 31 since they’ve over-

Tickets for the Polar Bear Express are $35. Passengers under 2 are free unless they cannot sit on a lap and need their own seat. For more, visit itm.org/events/pbx/.

hauled the highway and made it more like an interstate,” Nichols said. The Polar Bear Express runs until Dec. 23. Christkindlmarkt opens in downtown Carmel editorial@youarecurrent.com

For most of the month, the small huts that will make up a traditional German Christmas market have been in place with vendors putting the final touches on their shops. The market will be closed Mondays and Tuesdays, but will be open from 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays, 1 to 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 1 to 9 p.m. Sundays. A matching donation could make a huge impact for a local organization this year on Giving Tuesday. For 38 years, Janus Developmental Services has provided those with disabilities in Hamilton County and surrounding communities with the opportunity to work and Laird live more independently through its programming. Efforts of the nonprofit will be continued and expanded thanks to an anonymous donor who has agreed to match any donations made to Janus up to $12,500 on Nov. 28. Giving Tuesday is held annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving to kick off the holiday giving season and inspire people to give back in ways that can impact the charities and causes that make a difference. Donations made to Janus will help the agency provide services to individuals with disabilities which focus on the attainment of important life skills, pre-vocational job training, education, community employment assistance, respite and community services as well as the support needed to live more independent and fulfilled lives. “It is because of the generosity of our community that Janus continues to have the opportunity to serve people with disabilities and positively impact their lives,” Debbie Laird, senior vice president of development, said. “I am so thankful to the community member whose belief in Janus is so strong that matching funds are being provided for our Giving Tuesday campaign to double the impact of each donation.”

Local merchant helps others around the world with shop By Sadie Hunter sadie@youarecurrent.com

Emily Awour Wasonga is a philanthropist. Her work through her store, Love’s Hangover, off the square in downtown Noblesville, has helped countless artists and crafters from around the world for the past eight years. “We opened on Dec. 1 (2009), which was World AIDS Day, and it was meant to happen that way, very symbolic,” Wasonga said. Wasonga, 30, is the primary owner of Love’s Hangover, but a team of her colleagues represent the store all across the U.S. and in Kenya, Wasonga’s home country. Aside from selling jewelry, clothing, handbags, shoes and art from tribes, villages and communities around the world, Love’s Hangover, at 159 N. Ninth St., also sells teas and small gift items and offers repair service for jewelry and handbags. She also teaches beading through the Hamilton East Public Library in Noblesville and through City Winery in Chicago. “My sister and I had always been into design. I gravitated towards clothing. Really, what I wanted to do, and at the time I didn’t know there was a word for it, was philanthropy,” she said. “I just wanted there to be ways for people to make money and make ends meet, because I felt like, even

as a child, I was introduced to a lot of that. So, I just wanted for there to be a way, and I didn’t know if it was going to be through music or fashion, so I kind of played with all of it. Then America happened.” Wasonga and her family moved to the U.S. when she was 16, in 2004. Wasonga works one-on-one with various fashion bloggers and stylists for personal, customized orders. She also works with a Forbes-endorsed company, Shoptiques, to supply their online store. “One thing I’ve noticed as a small business is that the turnover in suppliers is insane,” she said. “A lot of people are doing what they’re doing almost as a hobby rather than their primary business. I made peace with that, and now I flow with it.” Many Love’s Hangover products come from various countries in Africa, but Wasonga sells accessory items and art from all around the world. Recent shipments have included pieces from Peru, Hawaii, Kenya and more. “I went to an international elementary school (in Kenya),” Wasonga said. “So, I have a lot of global contacts, and on top of that, before I got to the U.S., we were living in Botswana, and even there, the school was international. So, with that, that’s how we get a bunch of our supplies in.”

Riley ornaments now being sold By Sadie Hunter • sadie@youarecurrent.com

Riley Children’s Foundation, the organization that solely benefits Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health, has announced the return of its annual ornament sales designed by Riley kids. “Each year, Riley Children’s Foundation staff works with self-identified Riley families who have an interest in creating art for our ornament/holiday card program,” said Kate Burnett, senior communications officer for the foundation. “Typically, we work with families who are engaged with the foundation in other ways, but we’re always open to working with new Riley families who are interested in creating artwork. This year, a Zionsville native and Herron School of Art grad, Justin Patten, 36, created the annual, custom “red wagon” ornament. Patten Patten said Riley’s chief marketing officer, Jim Austin, chose him. “I got to know Jim and (wife) Barb Austin years ago while teaching their two awesome kids while I was in Lawrence Township,” Patten said. “After their kids left school, I started to build my Storm Striker painting business. Jim saw my work and commissioned me to create a painting of the Riley Wagon for the Riley office in downtown Indy.” From there, the image made its way onto an orrnament. This year, pieces include a penguin ornament by Jace Randel, 14, Wabash, Ind., an ice skates ornament by Olivia Stoy, 14, Ashley, Ind., an elf ornament by Luke Chapman, 2, Evansville, and Patten’s red wagon ornament. Ornaments are $10 each and are available at rileyholidaycards.org. The ice skates ornaments are available statewide in Speedway convenience stores, and the penguin ornaments can be purchased at Riley Hospital, IU Health University Hospital and Simon Cancer Center. The ornament program is part of the foundation’s larger, end-of-year giving campaign, “The Gift of Hope Happens Here,” which raised $1.95 million last year for Riley children. For more, visit rileykids.org.

Krysty-An Spartz got some good advice from her youngest daughter, Lucy. “My youngest daughter told me, ‘Mom, you really need more friends, you need to go out for a play,’” the Noblesville resident said. “It’s been a job, because now I have so many friends, real friends. It’s really a neat community of people there are involved in The Belfry and nearby community theaters.” Spartz explained how Lucy, who was involved in theater Mark Tumey and Krysty-An Spartz appear in “A stage crew in high school, was Christmas Cactus.” (Photo by Mark Ambrogi) likely concerned because she graduated from Park Tudor School last spring and knew her mother was going to be an empty nester. Spartz is playing a lead role of Cactus O’Riley in “A Christmas Cactus” at The Belfry Theatre in Noblesville. The play began Nov. 17 and remaining performances will be at 8 p.m. Nov. 24 and 25, Dec. 1 and 2 and 2 p.m. Nov. 26 and Dec. 3. O’Riley is a private investigator in a comedy mystery. This is Spartz’s third play, all at the Belfry. She previously appeared in 2016 in “The Girls of the Garden Club” and “Dashing Through the Snow.” “I was thrilled and surprised to get the lead, to say the least, to be cast as Cactus O’Riley.” Spartz said. “It’s been a lot of fun.” Spartz said it’s a much larger role than she has ever had. “To be honest, because I’m fairly new to theater, I’m a little nervous about it,” Spartz said. “But my excitement pushed me to tackle my lines from the beginning. It’s not as difficult as I thought it would be, but it certainly is a lot of work, which is more than I would have guessed a year ago, before I got involved in theater.” She said the biggest challenge is the number of lines and overcoming the fear of a mishap, such as a forgotten line or misplaced prop. Spartz played the violin in a string ensemble at Mt. Vernon High School in Fortville. “So I played in the orchestra pit for musicals in high school,” Spartz said. “Then about 10 years ago, I got involved in doing puppets, all aspects of puppetry, writing choreographing and directing. I worked behind the curtain, and I’ve always been just fine. So it’s been new for me.” The play is directed by Elaine Wagner of Noblesville. Mark Tumey and Terry West from Noblesville are performing in the show along with Melinda and Jim Updike, Carmel, and Aaron Mowles, Indianapolis. HOLIDAY RECIPES

Butternut squash sage frittata

Crispy sage leaves: • 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil • 6-8 small fresh sage leaves Frittata: • 2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil • 1 1/2 cups butternut squash, diced • 1 clove garlic, minced • 2 large sage leaves, chopped • 6 large eggs • 1/2 cup fat-free milk • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt • 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground nutmeg To prepare crispy sage leaves: In small skillet, heat olive oil until shimmering. Fry sage leaves in oil until crispy, about five seconds. Remove sage leaves from oil and drain on paper towel. Sprinkle with salt while hot. To prepare frittata: Heat oven to 425 degrees. In 10-inch cast-iron skillet, heat oil over medium-high heat. Add butternut squash; stir to coat in oil. Spread butternut squash in single layer, and cook two to three minutes before stirring. Repeat until squash becomes tender and begins to caramelize, about 10 minutes total. Add garlic and chopped sage; stir until fragrant, about 60 seconds. In large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, pepper, salt and nutmeg. Pour mixture into skillet and stir gently to distribute squash evenly around pan. Transfer skillet to oven and cook 10 minutes, or until egg is puffed and set. Remove from oven and let cool before cutting and serving with sage leaves.

Cranberry walnut phyllo triangles

Filling: • 1 cup chopped fresh or frozen cranberries • 1/3 cup sugar • 1/3 cup raisins • 2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup • 1 tablespoon finely grated orange peel • 3 tablespoons freshly squeezed orange juice Triangles: • 10 sheets fresh or frozen phyllo dough • 1/3 cup melted butter • 2 1/2 cups Jarlsberg Chunk Cheese, cut into 25 cubes • 2 cups chopped walnuts Directions: Heat oven to 375 degrees. In saucepan, combine cranberries, sugar, raisins, honey, orange peel and orange juice; bring to boil. Reduce heat and simmer uncovered five minutes, stirring occasionally. Cool to room temperature. Carefully lay one phyllo sheet on cutting board and brush with melted butter. Place another sheet of phyllo on top and brush with melted butter. Cover remaining sheets with damp towel to prevent drying out. Position brushed pastry horizontally and cut into five strips. Place 1/2 teaspoon cranberry filling, one cube of cheese and 1/2 teaspoon chopped nuts in lower corner of each strip. Fold dough over filling to form triangle. Fold triangle up then over, forming another triangle. Continue folding to end of strip. Brush top with melted butter and sprinkle with 1/2 teaspoon chopped nuts. Repeat with remaining strips of dough and remaining sheets of phyllo. Bake 12 to 15 minutes, or until golden brown. Cool on wire rack before serving. Note: If using frozen phyllo dough, thaw in refrigerator overnight.

Mini pavlovas with lemon cream and grapes

Ingredients: • 4 large egg whites • 1 cup sugar • 2 teaspoons cornstarch • 1 teaspoon vanilla • 2/3 cup heavy whipping cream • 1/3 cup lemon curd • 1 1/2 cups halved California grapes • Chopped smoked or tamari almonds (optional) • Pinch of salt Directions: Heat oven to 350 degrees. Line baking sheet with parchment paper. With electric mixer on medium speed, in large bowl, beat egg whites and salt until firm peaks form. On low speed, add sugar one tablespoon at a time until meringue forms stiff peaks. Whisk in cornstarch and vanilla. Divide meringue into six four-inch circles on baking sheet. With large spoon, make indentations in middle of each. Place baking sheet in oven and lower temperature to 300 degrees. Bake 30 minutes then turn off oven and leave baking sheet inside another 30 minutes. To serve, whip cream to soft peaks and stir in lemon curd. Dollop onto meringues and top with grapes. Garnish with almonds, if desired.

Tips for using leftover holiday wine Whether it’s a semi-full bottle of crisp white or a half-empty bottle of leftover red, there are creative ways to make the most of unused wine after all the holiday parties come to an end. Deutsch Family Wine & Spirits offers these ideas to help you put your leftover wine to good use this holiday season: • Make red wine vinegar: Impress your guests by adding homemade red wine vinegar to your next dish. Add one part raw vinegar to two parts leftover red wine then store your mixture in a dark, cool place. Monitor periodically and keep testing until you get the desired vinegar smell, strain and refrigerate. Use as desired on salads and in homemade sauces and marinades. • Create wine ice cubes: If you can’t use your leftover white wine right away, pour the remaining liquid into ice trays and freeze. Next time you’re enjoying a glass, add some of the cubes to your wine to keep it cold. Using the frozen wine cubes instead of ice can prevent what you pour from becoming too watered down.
