Grow your own salsa garden Commentary by Noah Herron It’s March and spring is right around the corner. Many gardeners start to plan now and it’s always fun to have a themed gardening garden. One of the most popular themes is a salsa garden. The taste of fresh salsa straight from the garden is second to none. It’s easy to do and all the ingredients can be grown right in your backyard. Location: Choose a location that gets full sun. Tomatoes, peppers, tomatillos and onions love sun and need at least eight hours every day. Herbs can be grown in full sun to partial shade. It may be best to plant the herbs so they get partial shade from the tomato plants. Ingredients to grow for your salsa garden: Tomatoes (Start seeds in March or buy transplants in May) - Tomatoes are the main ingredient for any salsa recipe. They will also be the largest plant in your salsa garden. Be sure to place them in the garden so they don’t block the sun to other plants. The best salsa tomato varieties will be meaty with very little water content. We always suggest Rutger, Roma and San Marzano tomatoes for salsa. If you do choose a watery tomato variety you can always strain the salsa and use the juice for a bloody mary. Peppers (Start seeds in March or buy transplants in May) - Peppers are almost as important as tomatoes in salsa as they can change the flavor drastically. Both sweet and hot peppers go well in salsa and should be chosen by your
personal taste. For a mild salsa try California Wonder or Orange King bell peppers, for medium try Chili, Jalapenos or Serrano peppers and for a fire hot salsa try Habanero or Cayenne peppers. Peppers love sun so make sure they are located accordingly. Onions (Start seeds in February or buy sets in April) - Onions will add that extra zest to your fresh salsa. Onions are definitely the most challenging vegetable to grow in a salsa garden. If starting from seed be sure to start them early because they take 4 months or more to mature. The most common way to plant them is from onion sets, which are easier to handle and mature quicker. You may also want to try bunching onions which only take a couple months and have great flavor. Two of our favorite onions for salsa are Candy Hybrid and Ebenezer. Cilantro (Start seeds in early April and transplant in May) - Cilantro is the last key ingredient to a great salsa. Cilantro can be planted throughout the garden and is quick to bolt so plant new seeds every few weeks to ensure a continuous harvest of fresh cilantro. The above ingredients are a must for any great salsa. There are also several other great ingredients that can be grown as well. Try tomatillos, basil, garlic, cumin, black beans and oregano. Happy gardening! Noah Herron is owner of Urban Farmer Garden Center, 4105 W. Ind. 32, Westfield. To contact Herron, call 600-2807 or visit www.ufseeds.com.

Revitalize this spring with the top spa treatments By Anna Skinner • news@currentincarmel.com With the arrival of spring, the world dons a new look and people tend to follow suit. Day spas and salons across Hamilton BOdy County prepare for an onslaught of clientele who yearn for radiating skin, glossy haircuts and stress-relieving deep tissue massages. Luckily, there are local spas equipped to meet these demands. Woodhouse Day Spa in Carmel, also with locations in Fishers and Zionsville, was voted “America’s Favorite Day Spa” in 2014, and general manager Laura Fogel strives to keep that reputation alive. “We offer a very high level of service to our guests and the expectation is there so we do deliver,” Fogel said. She stated that Woodhouse Day Spa likes to continue treatments to keep a year round consistency. Woodhouse offers body massage services, facials, waxing, nail services and other treatments, yet they focus on the experience of the clients above all. “The entire country is stressed out,” Fogel said on the importance of treating one’s self to a spa day. “You can go anywhere to get a massage, but not anywhere to get the experience. At Woodhouse, you meet with a therapist who understands your concerns and works with you towards results that you want. It is more than just the treatment; it’s therapists who really care about your wellbeing.” Cloud 9, a day spa and salon in Noblesville off Hazel Dell, is also a full service spa. Co-owners Irene Young and Maria Rigakos are expecting the “Spring Break rush” that hits their spa with an

exponential increase starting in January. Young explained the “Spring Break rush” as a combination of weather, prom, spring break and everyone searching for a new look. “Some people may have lost weight, or a trip inspires a different look. A lot of things come into play, like shaking off the cold from winter, and our massage services increase because gym use increases in the spring,” Young said. Young describes the body as “the most important thing you possess” and that once you start to look good, feeling good shortly follows. However, Cortney Reisleman, President of Silver Door Boutique Spa on Range Line Road in Carmel, offers services that other spas do not. These services include cavi-lipo and infrared bioslimming, in addition to the other full spa services such as massages and facials and microderms. “Our spa is popular because of our excellence in service,” Reisleman said. “Our clientele expect the best and our staff are trained to provide that. We also offer services that no one else in Indiana offers like cavi-lipo and infrared bioslimming.”

Springtime a challenge for wild birds news@currentincarmel.com March is one of the most difficult and stressful times of the year for wild birds. After surviving the long, barren winter, birds outdoors still face the challenge of finding food. Birds’ natural food supply is at its lowest point of the year. Insect populations are low, and the few remaining wild fruits, berries, seeds and nuts are either hidden or undesirable. Spring’s unpredictable weather doesn’t make life any easier. Sunny, warm, spring-like days can rapidly give way to cold, damp and even snowy conditions that can push birds to the brink. “Providing food throughout the spring is as important as winter feeding,” stated Charity Rausch, owner of the Noblesville Wild Birds Unlimited. “The birds are expending a great deal of energy migrating, courting and building nests at this time of the year when their natural food supplies are close to being exhausted.” Food loaded with fat and calories helps birds struggling to survive the gap between winter and

spring. The best seeds for providing energy are black oil sunflower, striped sunflower and safflower. Suet is also a high-energy food which is invaluable when birds need many more calories to keep their bodies warm. These and mealworms are a beneficial substitute for the scarce insects many birds would eat if they could find them. Wild Birds Unlimited is at 14753 Hazel Dell Crossing in Noblesville. What ‘wood’ I buy? By Kelly Marburger Novak
Customers are always asking me what type of hardwood would I select for my own home. Having worked for years at my family’s 100 year old business, EF Marburger Fine Flooring, I feel like home I can offer an informed opinion. Options have changed drastically over the years and there are now more choices than anyone can imagine. It is hard to decide which flooring is right for your home. There are a lot of words floating around out there that are misused, mispronounced, and misunderstood. It has become increasingly difficult to choose the right flooring from the right company and now there are other external worries such as formaldehyde sneaking into your home. . Allow me to clear up some of the confusion. Solid hardwood flooring Solid wood flooring is milled from a single piece of timber that is kiln or air dried before sawing. Depending on the desired look of the floor, the timber can be cut in three ways: flat-sawn, quarter-sawn, and rift-sawn. The timber is cut to the desired dimensions and either packed unfinished for a site-finished installation or finished at the factory which is called a prefinished hardwood. Site finished solids can be sanded down and refinished multiple times. Because of nano technology, the factory finish is far superior to a site finish floor. With a prefinished floor you avoid the mess and odor of site refinishing and you can walk on the floor as soon as it is installed. The planks are typically between 2 and 4” wide, and are vulnerable to cupping and gapping in our extreme temperature and humidity fluctuations. Engineered hardwood flooring Engineered wood flooring is composed of two or more layers of wood in the form of a plank. The top layer is the wood that is visible when the flooring is installed and is adhered to the core. This layer can usually be sanded down and refinished once, but again this has become less popular. Especially since if you decide to go with a hand scraped look- sanding this will eliminate the hand scraping. The increased stability of engineered wood is achieved by running each layer at a 90° angle to the layer above. This stability makes it a universal product that can be installed over all types of subfloors above, below or on grade. In addition, the construction of engineered hardwood allows for a wider plank than the solids. The widths can range from 4” to 10” wide with less danger of cupping or gapping. Laminate and vinyl floors are often confused with engineered wood floors, but are not—laminate uses an image of wood on its surface, while vinyl flooring is plastic formed to look like wood. All of our flooring manufacturers have sent us certificates showing that their products meet CARB2 certification. Thus, there is no worry of dangerous chemicals such as formaldehyde in the flooring. The solid and engineered hardwood and laminate manufacturers represented in our showroom at EF Marburger Fine Flooring have provided us with certificates showering that their products meet CARB2 certification, alleviating the worry of the presence of dangerous chemicals such as formaldehyde in their flooring. With flooring being the backbone of your home, make sure you choose a reputable, experienced company who has plenty of choices and can give you the best guidance in selecting the right flooring product for your family and lifestyle along with a warranty on the product and installation.

Conquer spring cleaning and more Commentary by Vicky Earley Is there anything as inspiring and invigorating as the first taste of warmth after the biting cold of winter? Hold on…spring is decorating almost here! Until the days of sunshine are more than just a tease, here are ten ways to spend the last few days indoors. Spring clean. Ugh..I know it sounds trite and boring. There is, however a reason that it is an age-old tradition. During the months when windows are closed, dust tends to move through the heating system and settle just about everywhere! Spring is the perfect time to throw open the doors, let the fresh air in and clean until the final vestiges of indoor living are removed. Windows. Before the sunshine streams in and points out the dirt and grime that has collected for the past year, enlist the services of a squeegee. If your room has been oriented around a fireplace for the winter months consider repositioning around the view out a window! Inspect. Before the rays of spring pour through your windows for another season, look for signs of damage from last spring and summer. Lift rugs and look at hardwoods for signs of fading and examine the exposed edges of window treatments for signs of rot from damaging UV rays. If you see the beginning signs of damage, call a window film expert right away! The damage will only get worse when the sunlight streams in during the spring and summer months! Streamline. Spring is the perfect time to take inventory of what is working and what isn’t with your indoor décor. One of the best ways to objectively look at your space is to take a photograph of the room. Editing is easier when done on a photograph than spatially. If an item is worn
out or just does not work, let go. It is a liberating way to enter the warmer months of the year. Fresh color. If your room was planned properly in the first place, you should be able to switch some of the strong personality colors for a lighter atmosphere. Forest Green could be switched to a spring-y Chartreuse and Navy could be switched for a soft Aqua. Paint and paint again! Nothing freshens a room like a clean coat of paint on the walls. You don’t even have to change the color to benefit from the lift! While you are at it, look around for a piece of wood furniture that might be weighing down the room. Consider painting it to make the room breathe a bit easier. Set a rarely used table as if you are expecting extraordinarily special guests. Layer the dishes. Dust the crystal and bring it out. Buy a few new dishes that don’t match your usual ones and add them to the mix. Just glancing at this beautiful table set every time you pass the room will spark a smile. Accessorize. Spring is the perfect time to try lighter and brighter accessories. Try replacing heavy pottery pieces with glass or white ceramic and roll up heavy rugs and replace with lighter weight flat weave or jute rugs. Go big! I can guarantee that a room filled with small items and art will be a room that is filled with visual clutter. Get rid of small art floating on a wall and replace with large art that fills the space. A few carefully selected items on a coffee table will speak volumes compared to lots of little items gathering dust. Vicky Earley is the principal designer for Artichoke Designs in Carmel. What pain does to the physical psyche Commentary by Dr. Sally Brown Bassett One beautiful Sunday afternoon last October as I was trail-riding through some woods, my horse got extremely spooked by body a buck charging over a fence and jumping into a nearby pond. Maverick reared up perpendicular to the earth and I had no choice but to let go seven feet in the air and land on my back. He then fell on his back missing me by inches. Other than the breath being knocked out of me, I got up and walked both of us back to the barn and thanked God that I could. Unfortunately, two months later I woke up to sciatic nerve problem in my lower back and down the left leg that some days I considered to be a nine on a pain scale of one to 10. Thus began my journey of recovery that included yoga, chiropractic sessions, acupuncture, physical therapy and massage. Pain can be debilitating in more ways than one. Through a yoga concept that did not resonate with me while going through yoga teacher training 14 years ago, I began meditating on this topic of physical pain and what it does to the rest of your psyche. Yoga improves the physical body, but it also comprises techniques that act on your mind and emotions, and

provides a complete philosophy of living. It can also be regarded as a method of self-study. It is believed that there are five layers or sheaths of energy that confine the spirit or essential self. These five sheaths, called Koshas, are the physical body, the mind, the breath/energy, the intellect and the bliss/spiritual. My experience taught me when there is physical pain, the other layers are out of whack. It is harder to focus mentally when you are constantly aware of pain. Bodywork appointments were continued to help fix my sciatic problem. I gradually got 95 percent back to my normal self then headed to Costa Rica to lead an annual yoga, adventure, and service retreat. Prior to my group flying in, I joined a meditation group for a few days. It is there that I meditated on these five levels of the self. I wanted to find gratitude by focusing on each Kosha separately. I began by thanking God for my physical capabilities and committed again to treating my body as a temple through healthy food, exercise and rest. Gratitude along with understanding came when meditating on the pranayama (or breath/ life energy) kosha. I learned when I did have pain to acknowledge it without being consumed by it. The breath sheath
is just as important as the physical body and gives you the emotional energy needed. Mentally, I was grateful for my mind and vowed to keep it healthy through positive thinking and new experiences. The intellect or wisdom sheath seemed to be assembling the connection of the five sheaths for me. It’s like a “light bulb” moment. When focus began on the “bliss” sheath, I thought it would be a separate experience like deep meditation can bring. It was not a separate feeling and it seemed natural that all five layers of my being would be present and completing working together. Our soul or self consists of all these layers and we should be conscious that all are balanced and healthy. The bottom line for each of us is to strive for a balanced life even when something is not working in one area. Yoga develops your ability to maintain inner peace at all times. According to the ultimate yogi book, “The Yoga Sutras,” it is our God-given right to find bliss. Now who wouldn’t want that? Dr. Sally Brown Bassett is a yogi, social entrepreneur and world traveler. She is the founder and president of Peace through Yoga Foundation, where she leads trips to Costa Rica several times a year and works at the foundations’ International Center for Peace. Sally teaches at Peace through Yoga and Butler University. She can be reached at sally.bassett@peacethroughyoga.com.
Saline or silicone: What’s the best breast implant? Commentary by Dr. Barry Eppley Q: I have been wanting breast implants for a long time and have been researching a lot of doctors and Appearance implants. I have has one consult last year and I really liked the doctor but he only did saline implants and I think I am leaning more towards silicone implants but would like to discuss both with a doctor that does both. Which breast implants do you think are best? A: Saline and silicone filled implants are both FDA-approved options for breast augmentation. They do share certain similarities, they both create equally effective enlargements of the breasts and are equally safe. Looking at augmented breasts from the outside, it would be usually be difficult to tell what type of breast implants was used. But beyond their external appearance, they do have several very distinct differences. Saline implants are associated with having, eventually, ripples that can be seen and felt on the bottom and sides of the breasts, which does not occur with silicone implants. Most women will say that silicone implants feel more natural as a gel-filled implant feels better than a bag of water. A dramatic difference between the two is in how they

will eventually fail. (They will not last a lifetime and will eventually need to be replaced) Saline implants fail by a dramatic loss of fullness like that of a flat tire. Silicone implants never lose volume because the gel does not act like a liquid (like a gummy bear candy) and just stays in place with the same volume even if the bag sustains a tear or a hole. For this reason alone, silicone breast implants last longer than saline implants. The concise version of this story is that there is one and only one reason to ever get saline breast implants; cost. Spring into fitness with Baby Boot Camp Commentary by Kara Babcock After months of being stuck inside spring is FINALLY here!!! With the warmer temperatures upon us, it’s a great time to focus on your health and fitness by getting outside exercise and getting fit! Baby Boot Camp would like to show you some ways in which you can get fit while exercising with your little ones! We believe that you do not have to leave your little ones in a gym nursery or with a baby-sitter when you want to exercise. Bring your cute little bundle of joy along to make your workouts extra cute, fun and enjoyable! Think about it, would you rather be looking at a monitor on a treadmill or looking at the face of your sweet baby while you are working out?! Here are a few exercises, which you can do outside with your baby this spring. You will not only get to bond with your little ones but you’ll get to enjoy the fresh air all while getting a good workout! Peek-a-boo squats Stand behind your stroller with your hands on the handlebar shoulder-width apart. With your feet and knees forward, squat down as if sitting on a chair, keeping your weight in your heels and your knees directly above your ankles. (Be careful not to put weight on the stroller; you don’t want it to tip.) Squeeze your rear end and return to the starting position. As you squat down in
front of your baby, play a fun game of peek-a-boo so you can hear their adorable baby belly laughs! Bring energy and life into your outdoor living space Commentary by Randy Sorrell Spring is synonymous with energy and inspiration. Often, there’s so much vigor happening that we have to prioritize. Priority #1 is how to recover from winter, how to rejuvenate. Not only our garden psyche, but our bodies and outdoor living space too. Here are my top five exercises for each: PERSONAL 1. Breathe, yoga style. That simple…just get outside and deliberately breathe in the fresh air and digest a moderate dose of the suns Vitamin D. 2. Funny what a shiny detailed car will do. Washing off the winters dirt makes me smile, just like freshly cleaned sunroom windows. 3. Find a park and get the endorphins flowing. Bike, hike and enjoy the Monon Trail. 4. Outdoor dining signals that life is back to normal. Where’s your favorite el fresco spot? 5. Spruce up your outdoor living space, which leads to... Patios and landscapes look incredibly tired after a harsh winter. A few key activities will quickly rejuvenate your outdoors and elevate our perspectives. Don’t we want to feel happy when we pull in our drive and walk onto the patio to grill? Here’s how: OUTDOOR LIVING SPACE 6. The basics of cleaning landscape beds, picking up lawn debris and roughing up last years spent mulch has an immediate ROI. Take a power blower to the walk, front porch, driveway and patio. 7. Most patios gather pollution, tree debris and stains quickly. A quick hosing will help or mix 50/50 bleach and water and scrub away for a vibrant result. 8. Our patio furniture cushions have been winter / sun protected with covers. Yet, a good scrubbing with fabric cleanser brightens them to almost new. 9. Splurge on fresh pillows and a rug. We love the durability of Frontgate’s inventory. Go BRIGHT and introduce bold colors for movement. 10. Ornamental pots have a dramatic impact on drive up appeal, psyche and the feel of a space. Even outdated benign spaces can become relevant with the right pots and foliage. Multi purpose with herbs in the middle and ivy spilling over the base. Rejuvinate and get your smile on! Brighten up your home this spring Commentary by David Decker Spring is almost here, and with the changing of the season often comes the desire to rejuvenate your living space. After being inside your home all winter, you may be ready for homes a change! There are some very simple changes you can make to your home that can update your space and bring new life. Here are three of my favorites: Brighten up with a backsplash If you’re looking for an easy way to add some style to your kitchen, consider installing a new backsplash. A stylish backsplash gives you an instant visual impact, but this project won’t take your kitchen out of commission for weeks at a time. There
are also limitless options for what you can do with your backsplash, so no matter your style aesthetic, there’s something for you. Update your flooring Changing your flooring can bring new life to your home. There are so many new and innovative types of flooring available these days, from on-trend patterned carpet to bamboo to classic hardwood. Making a change to a new style or flooring material can bring a breath of fresh air to your space. Install new fixtures Another quick update that can make a world of difference is installing new fixtures in your home. Things like light fixtures and faucets have moved beyond being simply functional to being
works of art in their own right. Installing new faucets or lighting in your kitchen or bathroom can create a more modern look. Are you ready to bring a breath of fresh air to your home? Rejuvenating your space doesn’t have to be complicated! Consider one of these easy updates, or even all three for maximum impact. These relatively small changes can make a big difference in your home, and you’ll be able to enjoy them for years to come. Leaping forward with kids yoga Commentary by Anne Johnson With the onset Spring, we leap forward into warmer temperatures and brighter days, and the world around us blossoms. It’s body easy (and exciting) to look ahead toward Spring Break and the summer beyond. A mindfulness practice like yoga encourages us to celebrate the present moment one breath at a time. I’m pleased to share this grounding, family-friendly sequence. Repeat it any time you need to find your own inner Spring. Begin in a comfortable seated position (like crisscross applesauce). Take a deep breath in. As you breathe out, make the sound “Om” (or A-U-M) to steady your mind, signal the beginning of your practice, and acknowledge your connection to everything in our vast universe. Move onto your knees and drop your forehead to the floor in child’s pose. Form your body into the shape of a tiny seed. Take deep three breaths here. On your fourth inhalation, rise to stand. Stretch your arms wide and reach over your head. Imagine a seed sprouting in both directions; rooting down and growing up. Your seed needs water and sunlight to grow. Take 3 sun salutes to nurture your seed and energize your body. Begin with your hands at your heart. Inhale, stretch your arms up like the sun’s rays. Exhale, fold forward and touch your toes; wiggling your fingers like falling raindrops as you dive down. Inhale, lift your chest and gaze past your toes to lengthen your spine. Exhale and fold forward again. As you inhale rise up to stand; reaching your arms wide overhead. Exhale your hands to your heart. That’s one sun salute. Repeat two more moving with your breath. From your seed grows a tree. Stand tall. Lift your right foot and place it on the ankle, calf or inner thigh of your left leg. Raise hands to your heart or test your balance by stretching your arms above your head to grow branches. Imagine roots growing down from your left foot. Take 3 breaths balancing in tree, then switch sides. Tree pose helps you grow roots by build-

ing strength from the ground up - in your feet, ankles, and core. As your “roots” grow stronger, you can stretch your branches higher and stand proud.
