As you read the content in this publication and learn more about our community retailers, restaurants and amenities, I invite you to explore all that Zionsville offers.

Grab a meal, coffee or dessert from one of our many distinctive restaurants in the heart of downtown Zionsville and then take a stroll through our Main Street shopping area. In the span of one city block, you can learn how to crochet, stomp grapes and find a oneof-a-kind antique or handmade gift. With 500-plus acres of parks and a variety of amenities, it will not take long to see that our recreational and special event opportunities are geared toward every walk of life.

Zionsville is home to a thriving, growing business community. When the school bell rings and the workday concludes, the Village Business District transitions from the place to find the perfect gift or bottle of wine into a remarkable selection of dining and recreation options. Come spend an evening with Little League baseball and softball teams playing in Lions Park until after dark, with residents walking their dogs on pathways and trails and with visitors exploring our vibrant community.

Home to six elementary schools, two middle schools and one high school, Zionsville is approximately 70 square miles big. But you would never guess our size based on the charming identity we have maintained through decades of growth and changes. We are the proud home to the businesses and organizations you will see featured in this publication. Nonprofit’s mission is to break mental health barriers

In 2018, Zionsville residents Amber Nunes and Carrie-Ann Jordan, who are both advanced practice nurses, joined the fight against the preception of mental health issues by offering Question, Persuade and Refer training, which is a suicide-prevention initiative for participants to recognize the warning signs of taking one’s own life.

“Through Zionsville Eagle Recreation, a foundation that offers enrichment classes and athletic camps to community members, we offered QPR training and promoted our classes on social media,” Nunes said. “In our first year and a half, we trained around 100 people.”

During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the training slowed, but Nunes and Jordan – who are both mothers — became aware of how isolation impacted mental and emotional health in the community.

“As a resource hub, we wanted to give people tangible resources to know what is a crisis versus a normal response to mental and emotional health issues,” Jordan said. “We connected with the Zionsville Community School Corp., the mayor and the police chief, which is when the name Dr. Alex Choi kept coming up.”

In 2021, the two joined Choi, a Zionsville Town Council member, to create the Zionsville Alliance for Mental Wellness. Nunes, Choi and Jordan’s organization was approved as a federal nonprofit in late 2022.

“The mission of Zionsville Alliance for Mental Wellness is to impact our community by helping connect individuals in need to supportive resources and local behavioral health providers,” Nunes said.

The nonprofit aims to break the mental health blemish and provide residents with the right resources.

“I suffer from mental health issues, including bipolar disorder and anxiety,” Choi said. “My goal is to show people you can live a fairly normal life with the right treatment.”

ZAMW focuses on breaking down the barriers surrounding mental health

issues. The goal is to fill the gaps when seeking help.

According to Nunes and Choi, the three main gaps are the amount of data available, the lack of education and the difficulty surrounding the navigation process of finding a behavioral health provider.

“Not everyone in the community can afford to get the help they need, and we want to help navigate the insurance process,” Choi said.

Choi said the nonprofit wants to reach a point where residents can call the ZAMW and receive a list of resources and providers who can help treat specific illnesses.

“I want people to know that we are not a replacement for medical treatment,” Jordan said. “We want to soften the resistance to the conversations about mental health disorders and help community members connect to the best resources.”

A goal of the nonprofit is to one day be a household name for those who struggle to find the proper care for themselves and/or their loved ones.

“We are focused on involvement and growth right now,” Choi said. “We have several ideas to kick into action, including recording a podcast and posting online videos that people can use to educate themselves.”

There was an open house event from 6 to 8 p.m. April 27 at COhatch, 75 N. Main St., Zionsville, that aimed be open to anyone seeking more information about what the nonprofit offers.

“We want to use our knowledge as health care professionals and find successful approaches to these behavioral health and mental wellness issues,” Nunes said.

Building a future: Watch Us Farm provides job training for adults and teens with special needs

After Janice and Dr. David Agarwal saw similar programs across Europe, the married couple and Zionsville residents knew they wanted to launch Watch Us Farm in Zionsville.

Watch Us Farm is a pilot program to build greenhouses in communities that will provide job opportunities for adults with special needs while providing communities and local food pantries with fresh produce. It became a nonprofit about six years ago.

“Our son, Alex, has special needs,” Janice said. “We know what it is like to worry about what life will look like for them after graduating. This program helps other parents who have similar worries.”

The Agarwal family has lived in Zionsville for 23 years. They purchased the farm 10 years ago to kick off the program in the community.

Watch Us Farm provides jobs and training for local teenagers and adults with special needs. It is also a Medicaid Waiver Provider and Vocational Training facility.

“Our program allows parents who have children with special needs to know that with the help of our services, their kids will have jobs, housing and friends after high school,” Janice said.

The greenhouse, at 9906 E. 200 S., houses the pilot program. Adults and teenagers learn how to farm, do lawn work and more. The Agarwals want to establish more programs in other communities.

“We would like to add shop classes and move to other places with food deserts. We can move this program around the state, and we know how to train our kids to make them successful,” Janice said.

Watch Us Farm gives back to the Zionsville community by donating nutrient-dense produce to food pantries weekly and selling produce to restaurants and at farmers markets.

“As a nonprofit, we want to become more self-sustaining so that we are not always just looking for money,” Janice said. “We can take the money we earn and invest it in other areas of this organization to provide more opportunities for more kids and adults.”

In 2022, the Agarwals launched Watch Us Weave at 45 S. Elm St., Zionsville, a partnership that offers jobs and vocational training for kids and adults with special needs using fiber arts and textile design.

“We have been having a blast,” Janice said. “People have been taking classes, making rag rugs and table runners.”

An after-school program is now offered for middle school and high

school kids to learn about fiber arts. Camps will be offered this summer, with fiber arts classes in the mornings and afternoons five days a week.

“Our programs improve the mental health of the kids,” Janice said. “We are getting them off their devices and back to being creative and hands on.”

The farm also has a community garden for residents and field trips for area schools.

“Our field trips are pizza-themed to show how all of the things on pizza come from farms,” Janice said. “The kids learn about the grains, tomatoes, herbs and animal products here.”

Humane Society for Boone County seeks foster homes, donors and volunteers

The Humane Society for Boone County is a nonprofit that relies on volunteers from the community to keep its doors open. It runs with the help of donors, foster families and anyone else willing to help.

In September 2007, concerned citizens began to fund the shelter’s opening.

“Back in the day, there was no source of animal control in the community,” Executive Director Susan Austin said. “Animals were roaming the streets with nobody to help keep them safe. They were stray and abandoned.”

Before the 2016 purchase of its current building at 5366 S. Indianapolis Rd., the Humane Society for Boone County was utilizing houses set to be demolished.

“It is probably one of the worst-kept secrets in Boone County,” Austin said. “We could keep about four dogs and 10 to 15 cats in every house we found. Animal control was not a thing until 2018, so we did what we could.”

According to Austin, the facility now has nine runs for dogs and an isolated intake area. It can also hold between 16 and 20 cats if needed.

The nonprofit has always been primarily foster-based. Foster families help the shelter care for smaller animals until they are ready to be placed for adoption.

“The kittens and puppies are almost always placed in a foster home,” Austin said. “It is important for them to get the love and care they need before they find their forever home. We have around 45 fosters just for kittens.”

The Humane Society holds a pet pantry to give back to the community and thank residents for their donations and support.

“We distributed more than 35,000 pounds of dry cat and dog kibble last year alone to residents who needed some help with their pets,” Austin said.

“We also distributed around 20,000 cans of wet food. Anything extra we have, we give back out into the community.”

The nonprofit operates with the help of donations, sponsorships, auctions and individual donations. Staff and volunteers also integrate into the community by attending farmers markets and festivals.

“In addition to attending events hosted by other nonprofits, we hold multiple events yearly to get the community involved with our shelter,” Austin said. “We have a lot of adoption events throughout the year as well as many fundraisers.”

There was an open house to show off new renovations to the shelter April 22. On April 29 the humane society was at PetCo in Whitestown for a kitten shower to collect donations for new kittens, as well as having adoptions.

The next big fundraising event for the humane society was May 15 at the Golf Club of Indiana, 6905 S. 525 E., Whitestown, to raise funds to provide veterinary care, food and shelter for homeless pets in Boone County.

Zionsville Farmers Market set to return

With spring here and summer quickly approaching, organizers of the Zionsville Farmers Market look forward to the 2023 season.

The farmers market was started in 1997 by volunteers to help farmers bring their fresh produce to the community. Since then, it has become a hub for the town to connect, learn and enjoy.

“We are excited for our 26th season of the market,” Market Manager Kristin Nester said. “We have added new vendors and have a great mix of old and new events for the town to enjoy.”

The nonprofit market is run exclusively by members of the community. It relies on volunteer help to get everything behind the scenes ready to go each year.

“I am one of the only ones with a permanent job within the market,” Nester said. “Everything else relies on help from the community. My job is to plan all the details, create the map, do all the hiring and set up the logistics. Even our board is run by volunteers.”

After the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the market changed locations and added new events to

enhance community interest.

“Our kids’ events are extremely popular and will return this year,” Nester said. “We have crafts for the children and giveaways that make our market fun for the entire family.”

The farmers market provides diverse vendors each year that sell local produce, baked goods and much more. According to Nester, the market also prides itself on helping the community become more environmentally friendly.

“Something we are extremely excited about this season is a new water fountain that will be put in where our market takes place,” Nester said. “This will help us avoid relying on singleuse plastic water bottles. We want to focus on recycling and taking an environmental initiative.”

The farmers market will have live music each weekend.

“One of our volunteers is in charge of getting all the music set up, and she already has musicians set to perform all season,” Nester said. “This is just one of many ways our volunteers help make the market run.”

In addition, T-shirts will be available

for purchase with the farmers market’s new slogan.

“We haven’t been able to do a new slogan since the pandemic,” Nester explained. “We are excited to bring it back this year because residents enjoy them. This year’s slogan will be, ‘Every day I’m brusselin’, and I am very excited about this one.”

The market will also bring back its nonprofit booth for community nonprofits to set up.

“We call the nonprofit booth our community service booth,” Nester said. “Other nonprofits can set up to raise awareness on what they offer and receive donations of things they need to help keep their organization running.”

The farmers market received a community enrichment grant this year to help get its website and social media running. Those interested in becoming a vendor or volunteer can find more information at zionsvillefarmersmarket. org/.

The farmers market will open for the season May 20 and run every Saturday through September. It will be open from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at 340 S. Main St.

SullivanMunce Cultural Center offers a trove artifacts, activities and education

The SullivanMunce Cultural Center was established in 1966 as requested by Iva Etta Sullivan, the greatgranddaughter of Patrick Henry Sullivan, for whom it is named.

“Iva left funds for us to start a museum,” Executive Director Cynthia Young said. “She requested that the museum focus on the Town of Zionsville and Boone County.”

The facility at 225 W. Hawthorne St., Zionsville, started out as just a museum opening in 1973, marking this year as its 50th anniversary. Shortly after, the genealogy library was added.

“In 1981, we added the bungalow next door to the museum as a bequest of Mary Elizabeth Munce, who left money for us to start the art center,” Young said. “Then in 1990, the William Allen and Rosa Brunes Moore family memorial addition to the museum was made possible by a bequest from Sparkle Moore Furnas, her daughter Beatrice Furnace Thurston and her grandchildren.”

Since 2010, the buildings have been connected by a hallway. Now, the art gallery is in the Moore Brunes gallery as part of the museum. All classes are held upstairs, and the clay studio is in the basement.

The nonprofit serves as a historycollecting museum, where everything is donated by Zionsville residents who have lived in the area or had relatives in the area.

“We have over 9,000 items in our collection in the museum that we can switch in and out,” Young said. “Anyone interested can also access our historical collection through our website because everything has been cataloged.”

Young said the cultural center also stores items for local groups, such as information and records to keep them safe. If a group has an anniversary coming up, the center can pull their box and look through their information.

At the art center, classes and camps offer activities such as painting, drawing and ceramics. It also has seven to nine art exhibits a year in its gallery.

“Some of our exhibits are connected to the schools during Youth Art Month,” Young said. “In March, we have a display of artwork from K-12 students in the gallery. We also do group exhibitions and themed events.”

There are more than 4,000 volumes of local information in the genealogy library, such as yearbooks and obituaries. The public can also use computers at SullivanMunce to access records from multiple websites.

“In our library, we have information on 38 other states,” Young said. “We have access to ancestry.com and are a family-search affiliate library. We also

have access to newspapers.com, and everything is available to the public.”

On April 26, the nonprofit had an event to celebrate the Zionsville historical inventory.

“We went through and inventoried the Village of Zionsville historic homes,” Young said. “We are celebrating finishing that, and the public can buy a printed copy or look at it online.”

On May 12, the gallery had a juried exhibition titled “Flora and Fauna.”

“Indiana residents had the opportunity to enter three pieces of artwork based on flowers, plants or animals,” Young said. “The exhibit will be up through June 30.”

Nonprofit makes STEM education accessible to underrepresented children in the area

The STEM Connection is a nonprofit at 8407 Moore Rd., Indianapolis, that aims to make science a fun experience for underrepresented children in STEM careers. It was founded in 2014 by Executive Director Vera Vanderkooy.

Since its launch, The Stem Connection has grown immensely.

“Our first year, we only offered one week of summer camp, and now we offer six weeks of camps for children,” Vanderkooy said. “Through all of the programs offered in 2022, we served over 7,000 participants.”

Vanderkooy said about 60 percent of the revenue comes from the development space, grants, individual donors and sponsorships. The other 40 percent comes from its fee-for-service model.

“Our fee-for-service model allows us to offer summer camps at an affordable price,” Vanderkooy said. “We want children of all socioeconomic statuses to have access to our programs.”

The STEM Connection is operated by staff and volunteers. According to Vanderkooy, volunteers support the work while the paid staff runs the dayto-day programming.

“Every day is different at our program. Our staff has grown over the years to support the work as we continue to be able to serve more participants,” Vanderkooy said.

The nonprofit offers multiple programs, camps and field trips for children of all ages. It has a program called STEM Future Leaders for middle and high school students that helps them with leadership skills and mentoring.

“Certain times of the year are busier than the rest,” Vanderkooy said. “The warmer seasons are great for our program because we have a farm and do a lot of outdoor activities.”

In the winter, The STEM Connection focuses on virtual opportunities,

including its virtual library and creating kits for families at home.

“Our virtual library is a free resource of STEM activities you can do with children anywhere,” Vanderkooy said. “Our kits have all the supplies you need to do stem activities at home. These programs have helped our non-profit grow and brought a great support base.”

The STEM Connection gets involved in the community by having a presence at fairs, farmers markets and local events. It also has an internship program to get young adults and high schoolers interested in STEM education.

“Much of what we do at community fairs revolves around recruiting interns,” Vanderkooy said. “We also love to work with companies in the area to

build important partnerships. I think every conversation is worthwhile, and I love to talk with others about new opportunities.”

The STEM Connection’s field-trip season serves about 30 organizations and schools. Six weeks of summer camp beginning in June and running through the end of July are scheduled.

“We are holding a book drive and asking for STEM books for our camp children. The book drive is a fun way for the community to support us because we love to give every child that comes to camp a book,” Vanderkooy said.
