THE GULLIBLE FILIPINO: SEA GAMES 2019 The SEA Games 2019 last November was a monumental event for the Philippines, not only because it would be a great chance for our athletes to flash their skills, but because the SEA Games is about camaraderie and building great relationships with other nations. All relationships start by making yourself appealing. The budget for the event was given a P6 billion budget for the hosting, not including the P11 billion infrastructure budget to build the New Clark City in Bamban, Tarlac as the event’s venue. That equates to a total of P17 billion for our country’s SEA Games hosting. P17 billion was supposed to make us appealing to build relationships with other nations, but that P17 billion failed miserably in the beginning. Before the games even opened, the event was off to a rocky start. It all started when the delegates and athletes from other countries arrived at our airports. Pictures of athletes sleeping on airport benches and on the floors of hotels circulated online, leaving the government on fire for poor accommodation and logistics. Juliana Seow, chef de mission of the Singaporean team, wrote a complaint about the food quality and the shortage of supply of halal foods for Muslim athletes.

The Filipinos were all enraged, as they were shamed by the government’s failure to host the event properly even when it hasn’t even begun. Nothing put more gasoline to the fire when it was revealed that the Philippines spent P50 million,

or roughly $1 million, to build the cauldron for the SEA Games’ ceremonial lighting. It was enraging. The Philippines, a 3rd world country with a lot of people s u ff e r i n g through poverty,

What happened in the SEA Games’ opening ceremony isn’t isolated. It’s a pattern in Philippine History, history is changed through propaganda. Filipinos forget even the biggest thing that define who Filipinos are, Philippine history. While it’s not too late, to forget your horrors is dangerous. 10 years since that fateful evening of 2009, here I am, still a student journalist, but honed with the sight of the injustices that Filipinos face every day. Journalists are pivotal to the society, as we are the people’s voice.

I was already a student journalist back then, and it was the time when my passion for writing about the truth was starting to ignite. The Maguindanao Massacre, I think,

Justice was served, albeit it took 10 years to run its course, it wasn’t fully served. While the verdict is a victory for the families of the victims, it can be argued that the trial took too long and that the government failed to capture all the perpetrators. Several suspects including police and military still remain at large and away from the prosecution which presents a

Yes, the case was given its final verdict, but the case is far from finished. As long as the perpetrators remain at large, justice won’t be completely served and the lives of those who perished will be wasted.

We must realize the truth, speak the truth, and fight for it. The fight for the truth will be as tricky as the Maguindanao Massacre case. It will be long. It won’t be easy. It will be a gruesome fight, but all fights which aren’t fought is a loss. We mustn’t lose. our life livelier and beautiful. They help us nourish and nurture our grounds and help us cultivate our inner self.

Imagine that you are a garden filled with different kind of flowers such as morning glories, cosmos, roses, marigolds, sunflowers, zinnias, orchids and lavenders. There are seasons where the morning glories and cosmos flourish, seasons where the roses bloom, there are times where the marigolds and sunflowers shine the brightest and there also comes a time for zinnias, orchids and lavenders to blossom. You never let a day to pass without inspecting your flowers. You always make sure that they are not overcrowding each other, if they are all free from pests and if they are getting the exact amount of fertilizer and water that they need to produce beautiful flowers. Until one day, you found out that some of your flowers are withering amidst the care that you are providing to keep them safe from harm. You continue on revisiting your garden, thinking of the right idea to save those withering flowers but you cannot come up with any concrete plan to save them until you decide to just weed out them to save the other remaining healthy and blossoming

flowers in your garden. However, you find it hard to weed it out even if it’s necessary because all of those flowers have a role in your garden and first and for most, you took care of those flowers for so long but as you look around, you found out that having fewer groups of flowers is much better than to let those withering flowers to affect the beauty of your garden. In a real life situation, our life is just like a garden filled with different kind of flowers whom we call friends. We have our childhood friends, high school friends and college friends, and all other social groups. Amongst all of our circle or group of friends, we have our friends whom do we call our home friends that we always run to when everything is falling apart and none of our other friends can understand us. Our group of friends symbolizes the different types of flowers that we have in our garden which bloom in different seasons. Composed of different personalities, likes, humors, and quirks which makes

However, just like how some flowers in our garden, they wither and stop on blooming, our friends also come to a certain endpoint in our life where they will no longer be the friend whom we need to see and talk to as the sun rises and sets. They will no longer be the friend who was always there to protect and love us, listen to our rants and help us to put our pieces back together. There will come a day where their position in our garden will be given to someone else. At this point, weeding out becomes necessary. It’s not because we just want to cut them off our life but because of some valid reasons; when they become toxic and unreasonable, when they affect our peace of mind and when all they do is to pull us down. Weeding is also applicable when having our friends by our side hurts the most because of the underlying circumstance of life; growing, which sometimes means and needs to be growing apart from each other. This enables our flowers to blossom more than just the expected flowering season and lead us on

When the term “social media” existed, it influenced the whole world. Many people so much time in social media, browsing websites, watching content on YouTube. However, because of so much things to do with our smart phones, we forget the real world and our responsibilities being human. In fact, many people that are actively present in social media sharing different topics and always updated with new issues are mentally absent. Most of the common issues today are because of taking things for granted because of the power we have online. Everyone always relate themselves to what they see on social media. There’s this urge for people to follow the latest trend while taking the fact that not all trends are good for granted. Some use social media to express themselves, because they

This makes people lack social skills, and lose confidence about their appearance, ability, and afraid to interact with other people due to what they perceive on the internet. Nowadays, even children are busy chatting with their friends, posting pictures like adults, sharing dramatic quotations, and looking for a fairy tale love story even if they are still a kid. This hides the fact that social media causes problems. People may use social media because they feel alone and they see social media as the only cure to their problem. It causes

Many people lose self-confidence and always compare themselves when they can’t reach that feeling of fame on social media, so they feel intimidated because they can’t attain it. All of this happens because there’s no complete guidance from adults, as the adults themselves are so hooked on social media. What they fail to realize is that there’s a point where social media becomes toxic, and that we must learn to differentiate our real life from our social media identity, and do things the old way. Most Filipinos consume most of the day scrolling through Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and other social media applications. Yes, technology helps people do things quickly and efficiently without requiring much effort, it’s actually almost cheating. However, technology may sometimes be very useful but it could somehow wreck people’s lives. In other words, over reliance on technology has risks. It may lead to addiction that can harm the youth nowadays. People became lazy. For instance, they enjoy watching television most

of the time instead of going to the park – playing and strolling out there with family and friends and having real experiences in the real world. Before the technology was developed into what it is today, people used to go to outside and befriend people from the neighborhood. Now, they don’t even go out to buy the stuff they need since that can also be accomplished online through the advent of e-commerce. that technology provides. We must learn that not everything is done through technology. We re-learn to appreciate the little things such as the value of reading books, the smell of paper, and the reading experience. We must re-evaluate the things we do, and consider if it’s really the way to go in the long run. Changes come from generation to generation, and with every change comes with its own risks. also an advantage if you look at it as a lesson to study harder and as a reason to strengthen us in the next trials to come. Entering college is like a beginning of a new life. You will have a lot of things to experience. There’s excitement, enjoyment, happiness, tears, heartaches, and sadness that you can feel in every situation that comes to your college life. College isn’t easy, it’s not always good times but it’s also not always hard times. In college it’s not about surrendering once you failed, it’s about fighting and to keep going.

Although sometimes, professors are not always right especially if their grading system is a ‘best of luck’ like one of the games in a fun fair. But somehow, as a student, if we speak out for our rants, we need not only be confident but we also need to make sure that we deserve to pass. The truth is, ranting about it won’t solve it, and sometimes we are responsible for why we failed in the first place.

Some students have failing grades in a subject, a red mark on their portal account that are more painful than breakups. At first, they ask themselves why they received a failing grade, and why they failed. These are just some of the questions running through their minds. Many also blame their professors who gave them a failing grade which is not always the professor’s fault.

But on the other side of the situation, if we put our position as an ethical instructor, there are students who really deserve a failing grade. Professors don’t want to fail their students because of nothing, they don’t have an intention to pull us down by giving a failed grades and they are the one who get sad when they know that their students failed because of them, it’s as if they didn’t do their job well enough.

As a student, it’s really hard to accept the fact that you failed even though you tried your best to pass. It’s like you tried to give your best but it’s not enough and we end up blaming our instructor who gave that failing grade.

Sometimes, we ask them why they didn’t give us a little consideration to pass, maybe they want us to learn, to seek more so that next time we will never stumble again. Somehow, failure is not only a disadvantage, it’s

When you look at both sides of the spectrum, we will understand the outcome of our grades. There’s always a reason for it, but we should learn to accept all the circumstances that we will be facing next time. Us and our instructors aren’t always correct, don’t look at the capital F as an initial for failure, see it as an initial for fighter instead. The last thing that I want to tell is that not all red means failed, F doesn’t mean failure because a color red and F can mean as FIGHTING. Having a red mark on a card doesn’t define your future, it doesn’t mean that you need to surrender. The true meaning of having a red mark on our portal is a lesson to us that should come only once. When we get red marks on our grades, make it a motivation to study harder, and it will be a way to make us stronger and to lead us in our success because there is no success without failure and losses. At the end of the day all you have to do is to keep going.

Dating Apps of 2019 BY ALBERT JOSHUA JORDA

Is the title an eye-catcher? —Hah! If you’re reading this then I’m sure you’ve already tried using some dating apps, OR if you’ve never tried it—which I doubt—you might be curious of what’s really inside a dating application and what’s it for, right? So, dating apps, applications for “dating”—simple as that. There’s a lot of this type of applications booming out the app store and on the internet. The purpose of these applications is to connect people like other social media platforms and to share information and conversation between each other— quite normal, eh? But why are these dating media platforms clicking on the trends of the society? IT’S ABOUT SHOWING YOUR GOOD POINTS, as usual, this is the starting part inside a dating application. You’ll fill up your personal information such as age, height, gender, location, likes, dislikes, and what you’re looking for. But the most frustrating and exciting part is the uploading of your profile photos—right? When it comes to your dating app profile picture, you must pick your most pleasant picture with the best angles, best lighting, best background, and also the one with the right show of skin for that “pasarap effect”— Hah! “pasarap” ka pa ah. These steps are needed if you are really intending to sell yourself to the other users, you should really show your best sides in order for them to like you back.

After you finish uploading your photos, the next part is the main purpose of this kind of app. You just finished selling yourself, now it’s time to buy, it’s time to LOOK FOR A PARTNER OR A MATCH! I know, I know, you’re only looking for a friend—bleh! That’s so old school! Nevertheless, it depends on the dating app you’re using, whether it is Tinder, Bumble, Grindr, Her, OkCupid, etc. There are different methods on specific dating apps differentiated from tapping and swiping. By the way, based on CNN Philippines, the most trending dating app of 2019 is Tinder—aww, not Omegle? So sad.

Tinder Yeah, the dating app with a flame as it’s icon, that’s Tinder. Here, you can “Like” someone by swiping right or choose to pass by swiping left on them. A “Match” would mean that both parties swiped right on each other, and messaging ensues. Geolocation is also used in this app so that you’ll get to check out the users who are near to farthest from your current location.

Grindr Oh-kay, to all the users of this yelloworange masked application, you all know what this app is for. Grindr is one of the top trending apps for the gay, bi, trans, and queer community because of its easy features. Just tap and chat, meet, and so-on. This application is notoriously known to be more of a hook-up app. Grindr is also known for its many controversies—offensive speech is one that is commonly found within the app. To all the users of this app, just remember to be careful and respect each other.

Bumble This is a dating app that the women users love but hated by men. Bumble is an assertive dating app for users, especially women because of it’s distinctive feature. Whenever a match

BOOK REVIEW BY CRISHA CRISTOBAL

If I were to name one person who loves me fondly and unconditionally, there’d be no other name that is going to pop up in my head except my mother’s. She loved me way before she first laid her hands on my face and she took care of me way before she first held me in her arms. She’s proud of my victories and triumphant of my defeats. She is my guide, my hope, and my whole life. The love that I have for my mother drove me to read the book “The History of Great Things” by Elizabeth Crane. This book is a narrative of a mother and daughter who are intimately connected but not connected enough to each other; exchanging different thoughts and ideas about one another and embellishing the truth whenever possible and revealing their own personal biases. Written in a witty and creative way of telling a story by a mother and daughter who are reminiscing their memories through the looking glass of time in two beautiful counterpoised ways, Lois (the mother) and Betsy (the daughter) tries to connect to each other more deeply as they revisit what happened in the past and what they truly know about each other.

Chapter by chapter, the pair works together to tell each other’s life stories with their own perspectives and remembering of the situations. Wherein, Betsy is into telling stories in an emotional way and later became conversationally and tries to gloss up over to give extra care to scenes that she views. On the other hand, Lois tells stories in a very hyperbolic way. She is more inclined to tell stories using her maternal concern towards her daughter Betsy.

Crane’s inventive novel of intimacy and reflection is told in an alternating way which may sometime lead the readers to confusion but the headstrong of each characters will always lead you back to the right perspective. Her cleverness also resulted for the book to brim with warm and revelations which will surely take the readers to an insular world created by her made up conversations that shows how one’s relationship with their mother can be.

At some part of the book, Lois will pull back the curtain on Betsy’s lifelong secrets as she tries to uncover some of her stories which resulted to her interrupting as she tried to defend her own actions and behaviors in the past. This book also shows how most mothers respond to their child’s actions and how they help them get through a situation.

This book will surely make you cry and laugh, and ask for more emotions as you get thrilled by the exchange of conversations of those two narrators at the same time. Just like how it made me feel when Lois said this to Betsy, “look at you, you’ve done better without me,” to which Betsy replied, “you were there for thirtyseven years of my life, there is no me without you”.

What I loved about this book is the pair’s differences, their exchange of thoughts at the end or middle of each and every chapter. How they discover their attitudes, lies and sometimes the truth, and how they swallow up their prids and ultimately coming up to understanding and loving each other in a way that feels extraordinary.

Truly, The History of Great Things will make us realize that our mother is the one who has been with us from the beginning and will always stick with us until the end, regardless of what else may follow.

What Should Your 18-Year-Old Self Know To Avoid Getting Hurt BY CRISHA CRISTOBAL

“I wish I was 18 by now”, a 12-year-old me thinking

that life is better when I grow up. Excited to see what the world has to offer and how life works as an adult. Amazed by the busy people walking down the streets and the light full buildings in town, I thought that growing up is such wonderful thing. However, life doesn’t always go the way we expected it to be, in fact, it will always shock you by what it really has to offer. So, as I started to grow and mature, I cannot help but always wish that I can go back in time and stay young forever. I wanted to go back to where I am free from pain and hate and when life was as easy as counting one, two, three. Aging is inevitable like change, we can’t stop it and all we can do is to look back to some of our favorite

memories and think of our innocent happiness by then. And now that I am officially a grown-up, I wanted to share the few things that I learned all through my journey to save some innocent soul from getting hurt. 1. Self-love is a must, at all times and at all cost - Prioritize yourself, your happiness and your well-being. You’ve been already so giving to other people that you almost forgot to check on yourself and you forgot how well you should be treated. Now’s just the right time to start giving back to yourself because you deserve all happiness and love that you keep on giving to the world.

Nevertheless, choosing the path of loving yourself is a long road. It will cost you a lot of time, effort and sacrifices but it will surely make your foundation a strong one that no other people can hurt and cause you pain ever again. In addition, you have to learn to love yourself first for it is the prerequisite of loving other people deeply and genuinely which will make them love you the same way in return. 2. Cut ties with people who gives you the scissors - As early as possible, you must learn how to cut ties with people w h o a r e

BY JONATHAN PIZARRA It was a momentous kick for the CICT Firefox taekwondo jins as they bagged five golds and one bronze medal in their respective divisions last October 24, 2019 inside the Valencia Hall. Robert Hermogenes, Kenneth Delos Santos, Christian Jorge, Roman Roca, and Herman Lim stamped their class and won gold medals while Steven Uson dropped his quarterfinal match to settle for bronze. In the featherweight division, Delos Santos ended the first round with the lead, 7-2, and won by default on the second round because of an illegal move by his opponent from the College of Engineering (CoE) Red Ants. Hermogenes faced the College of Education (CoEd) Flames in the finals of the men’s bantamweight division and dominated, 16 – 8, to win the gold while Jorge fought and prevailed in the men’s lightweight division finals, 11 – 7, against the College of Science (CS) Wizards. Roca dominated the men’s middleweight division and won the gold by successfully landing his

kicks, 28 – 9, against College of Architecture and Fine Arts (CAFA) Night Owls while Lim won by a landslide in the men’s welterweight division with his flexibility, 20 – 5, against COE Red Ants, In the men’s fin weight division, Uson advanced to the quarterfinals but was unfortunately defeated by the CS Wizard jin. His effort wasn’t wasted as he still earned a bronze medal. Lim shared their preparations and thoughts after winning the gold medal match. “Yung training namin, although mahirap siya pero once na focused ka at mahal mo yung ginagawa mo, magiging madali na iyon sa’yo, and sa tingin ko isa rin sa mga nagpanalo sa akin is unang una mag dasal muna bago lumaban, tiwala sa sarili at lakas ng

loob,” he said. “Malaking tulong din sa pagkapanalo ko yung pakikinig sa nagcocoach sa akin. Di ko rin expected na mag go-gold ako. Pero kung gusto mo makamit yung bagay na yon gagawin mo lahat ng kaya mo para makuha mo yon.” he added. Roca also added the value of having a winning mindset. “Yung una patience, maging matalino at focus dapat lagi pagdating sa court. Yung pangalawa, training ng mabuti tapos bago ako tumapak sa court, dapat confident ako at at alerto. Kadalasan bago sumabak sa match, ang mindset ko kaagad ay panalo,” Roca said.
