UNDAUNTED Hugh O’Brien Undaunted is for anyone who's ever dreamed of taking a high-action, alternative route through life. This is an engaging and unexpected account by an operator at once tough, whimsical and funny, and always brutally honest.

Publisher: Ebury, Random House | Paperback Rights available: UK, US, Translation, Audio, Film/TV Agent: Tara Wynne (tara@curtisbrown.com.au) Description: Diving was a boys-own adventure, a jump into the unknown, full of devil-may-care attitudes. It welcomed you with one hand and cast you asunder with the other. It was a hideous bitch goddess and it drank the blood of the unprepared. After an ordinary childhood, Hugh ‘Obi' O'Brien's life has been surprising. What took this sporty country boy from Sydney boarding school to directionless youth to navy clearance diver, slipping undetected through deep waters to defuse mines and dismantle bombs? Upping that level of adrenaline, Obi joined the Special Forces counterterrorism unit TAG (East) – no picnic. In a memoir full of eye-popping anecdotes, he colourfully recounts this wild ride. He reveals the painful transition from military life to his days risking ‘spaghettification' on underwater construction projects to private security work – pirate-hunting in the Red Sea and tearing along the world's most dangerous roads in the Middle East. HUGH O’BRIEN grew up on ‘Marree’ Greenethorpe, a sheep and wheat farm just outside Young in the Southern Inlands. After leaving school he spent some time travelling through Europe before joining the Navy as a Clearance Diver. Hugh then set about applying for Special Forces with the Army’s counterterrorism unit TAG (east) – a secretive team of divers and commandos, with the sole purpose of defending the domestic population from harm post 9-11. Acceptance to this unit was the defining moment of Hugh’s life. In 2011, Hugh left the Special Forces to pursue a career in private security. Hugh’s personal account of his experiences in the elite TAG (east) unit was published by Random House Australia in 2014.

BOY, LOST Kristina Olsson A powerful family memoir from the award-winning author of The China Garden.

Publisher: UQP | Paperback Rights available: World English language (excl. ANZ), Translation, Audio, Film/TV Agent: Fiona Inglis (fiona@curtisbrown.com.au)

AWARD WINNER!

~ Queensland Literary Award ~ Douglas Stewart Prize for Non-Fiction ~ ~ Kibble Literary Award ~ Western Australian Premier’s Book Award ~

Description: Kristina Olsson’s mother lost her infant son, Peter, when he was snatched from her arms as she boarded a train in the hot summer of 1950. She was young and frightened, trying to escape a brutal marriage, but despite the violence and cruelty she’d endured, she was not prepared for this final blow, this breathtaking punishment. Yvonne would not see her son again for nearly 40 years. Kristina was the first child of her mother’s subsequent, much gentler marriage and, like her siblings, grew up unaware of the reasons behind her mother’s sorrow, though Peter’s absence resounded through the family, marking each one. Yvonne dreamt of her son by day and by night, while Peter grew up a thousand miles and a lifetime away, dreaming of his missing mother. Boy, Lost tells how their lives proceeded from that shattering moment, the grief and shame that stalked them, what they lost and what they salvaged. But it is also the story of a family, the cascade of grief and guilt through generations, and the endurance of memory and faith. KRISTINA OLSSON is the author of the novel In One Skin (2001) and the biography Kilroy Was Here (2005). The China Garden (2009) received the 2010 Barbara Jefferis Award for its empowering depiction of women in society and was also shortlisted for the Kibble Literary Award. Kristina’s memoir, Boy, Lost (UQP, 2013) won a Queensland Literary Award, the Douglas Stewart Prize for Non-Fiction, the Kibble Literary Award and a Western Australian Premier’s Book Award, as well as being short-listed for a Victorian Premier’s Literary Award and The Stella Prize. Kristina’s journalism and non-fiction have been published in The Australian, The Courier-Mail, The Sunday Telegraph and Griffith Review. She has worked extensively as a teacher of creative writing and journalism at tertiary level and in the community, and as an advisor to government. She lives in Brisbane.

HIS OTHER HOUSE Sarah Armstrong He was dismayed how readily he took to lying. He’d always thought of it as a decisive abandonment of the truth. Instead, he realised, it was simply a matter of one word slipping into the place of another.

Publisher: Pan Macmillan Rights available: English language (excl ANZ), Translation, Audio, Film/TV Agent: Pippa Masson (pippa@curtisbrown.com.au) Description: After years of unsuccessful IVF and several miscarriages, Dr Quinn Douglas can’t face another painful attempt to conceive. RESILIENCE Matthew Johnstone Recovery through discovery.

Publisher: Pan Macmillan Rights available: US, Translation, Audio, Film/TV Agent: Pippa Masson (pippa@curtisbrown.com.au)

Description: To the uninitiated, resilience could be the benefit of a shampoo or a conditioner. In fact it’s more about developing a degree of flexibility and acceptance when it comes to life events. It’s not so much about what happens to you at the time of the event but more how you may respond or bounce back afterwards. When it comes to facing and dealing with life’s adversities, it is always preferable to bend, than it is to break. MATTHEW JOHNSTONE worked for 13 years as an art and creative director in advertising where he created award winning work in Sydney, San Francisco and New York. I Had a Black Dog, his illustrated book on what it is to suffer depression, was published by Pan Macmillan in 2005 and has since become a commercial success in Australia and internationally. Pan Macmillan published the follow up, Living with a Black Dog, in 2008, Constable & Robinson then published in January 2009 after which the book went to #9 on the Sunday Times Bestseller List. Since then, The Alphabet of the Human Heart (co-written with life-long friend James Kerr), Quiet the Mind and Capturing Mindfulness have been published in Australia and internationally, with The Alphabet of the Human Heart debuting at #5 on the UK’s Sunday Times bestseller list, and his first children’s book, Harvey: the Boy Who Couldn’t Fart being published by Walker Books. Matthew’s forthcoming book, Resilience, will be published by Pan Macmillan in 2015 followed shortly after in the UK by Constable & Robinson. www.ihadablackdog.com www.alphaheart.com

RANSACKING PARIS Patti MiIler This story of a year writing and reading in Paris explores truth and illusion, self-knowledge and identity - and evokes the beauty, the contradictions and the daily life of contemporary Paris.

Publisher: UQP | Paperback Rights available: English language (Excl) ANZ, Translation, Film/TV Agent: Clare Forster (claref@curtisbrown.com.au) Credit: Sally Flegg

Description: What does it mean to fulfil a dream long after it seems possible? When Patti Miller arrives to write in Paris for a year, the world glows ‘as if the light that comes after the sun has gone down has spilled gold on everything’. But wasn’t that just romantic illusion? Miller grew up on Wiradjuri land in country Australia where her heart and soul belonged. Mother of grown-up boys with lives of their own, what did she think she would find in Paris that she couldn’t find at home? She turns to French writers, Montaigne, Rousseau, de Beauvoir and other memoirists, each one intent on knowing the self through gazing into the ‘looking glass’ of the great world. They accompany her as she wanders the streets of Paris – they even have coffee together - and they talk about love, suffering, desire, motherhood, truth-telling, memory, the writing journey, how to know who we are in the family and in the cultures which shape us. PATTI MILLER grew up in country NSW and has worked teaching writing for over twenty-five years. She teaches memoir writing at the innovative Faber Academy in Sydney and offers writing courses in Paris and Bali. Her many books include Writing Your Life, The Last One Who Remembers, Child, Whatever the Gods Do and The Memoir Book. Patti’s memoir The Mind of a Thief (UQP) won the NSW Premier’s History Prize – NSW Community & Regional History Prize, was shortlisted for the Western Australian Premier’s Prize for Non-Fiction and longlisted for the Nita B. Kibble and Stella Prize. Her new memoir, Ransacking Paris, is due out May 2015.

BAD BEHAVIOUR Rebecca Starford Think Mean Girls crossed with Lord of the Flies. Bad Behaviour is terrifying, gut wrenching and brings back all the wrong memories of being a young teenage girl.

Publisher: Allen & Unwin Rights available: English language (excl ANZ), Translation, Film/TV Agent: Pippa Masson (pippa@curtisbrown.com.au) Description: Beautifully and starkly written, Bad Behaviour recounts Rebecca Starford’s experiences as a 14-year-old at a prestigious Australian girls’ school. Rebecca’s own boarding house - the ‘O Unit’ - had the dubious honour of homing some of the worst behaved girls in the school alongside some of the most socially vulnerable, which made for a toxic and occasionally dangerous mix. Bad Behaviour explores the inner machinations of boarding-school life: bullying, homesickness, the complexity of girls’ friendship, burgeoning sexuality, as well as a myriad of bad behaviour – all set against a unique bush landscape. REBECCA STARFORD is a Melbourne-based writer, editor and publisher. She has worked previously at Australian Book Review and Affirm Press, and she is currently an editor at Text Publishing. She writes regularly for the Age, Australian and Guardian Australia. In 2010, she co-founded Kill Your Darlings where she is now publishing director. Her debut memoir will be published by Allen & Unwin in 2015.
