Editor’s Note The politics of the contemporary internet are contingent on fantasies of the crowd, where the electric fetish of mass ornament and enduring myths of participatory democracy are collapsed into a new model of the phantom public, a suitable substitute for modernism’s masses. The crowd sources twitter revolutions while aggregating taco soup recipes, the crowd is proselytized in equal measure by politician’s speeches and tech CEO’s annual earnings reports, the crowd aggregates content into a new ethical framework for 21st century documentary truths. But the crowd is paradoxically both truth itself, and entirely unreal, as in: a wellrehearsed fiction. The crowd is antithetical to the technical logic of the internet by which the capacity to address the internet is first contingent on being addressed by the internet in the form of a nonrepeating IP address. In short: there is no crowd, only the crowding of atomized IP addresses infinitely individuating every future act of communication.

The most advanced forms of Target Production, referred to in military-speak as “cross-domain targeting and analysis” relies on the deployment of Remote Administrative Tools (RATS), a computer hacking procedure developed in the early 2000s that allows for the remote and invisible control of webcams from an external administrator. Ratting transforms the webcam, a device typically used to address the crowd, into a window through which a subject is addressed. A webcam allows a terrorist to project herself into the world through an IP address even while that same IP address transforms that same webcam into a window for the geo-locating of her architectural backdrop. Like the advertising techniques of internet marketing gurus, Target Production capitalizes on the addressability of all forms of internet communication, whether you’re hocking penis enlargement pills or coordinating predator drone strikes, the transformation of crowds into targets is your primary task.

The economy of the contemporary internet not only assumes the myth of the crowd, but harnesses the crowd as a fiction in order to transform the internet into a factory in which individuals all always labor, coaxing interaction from the crowd even as every interaction works to individuate the crowd into a marketplace of infinite individuals to be data-mined. This process, by which crowds are transformed into particular IP addresses by Facebook like acquisitions and Google search histories is referred to colloquially by net-marketing gurus as Target Production. Today, we live as targets, occupying subjectivities transmogrified by our preferences into micro-markets for the laser-precision of internet advertising. But Target Production is a neologism with a double meaning, both referring to ways in which subjects as marketplaces are carved from the anonymity of the crowd by cookies and click-bate, as well as an experimental form of military reconnaissance designed to geo-locate the targets of state-sponsored violence through crowdbased media surveillance.

Target Production not only relies on the ubiquitous 21st century reframing of architecture itself, as the blurred background of webcam feeds, Instagram posts and Skype calls, but applies to this now-dominant perspective of architecture’s insides a perverse form of post-internet critical regionalism. This still-untheorized form of architectural analysis weaponizes the cultural specificities of interior décor choices, geo-locates picturesque views from unobstructed windows, and mines targets out of the peculiarities of regional construction techniques. In other words, the reading-list for the web-surfing members of the 363rd ISR Wing undoubtedly includes heavy doses of Frampton and Rudofsky.

As in: Early in the Winter of 2015, three Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) bombs pierced the façade of an ISIS operating headquarters in eastern Iraq. The building was identified as an ISIS operating headquarters twenty-two hours earlier, after it was recognized in the background of an ISIS commander’s Facebook profile picture by United States airman with the 361st Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance group in Hurlburt Field Florida. “It was a post on social media to bombs on target in less than twenty-four hours” Airforce General Hawk Carlisle would later reminisce. A month later in February, 2015, the United States Airforce activated the 363rd ISR Wing, headquartered at Langley Air Force Base in Langley Virginia, and devoted to the cryptic double entendre of Target Production. For those who prefer drone-feeds over Buzz-Feeds, Target Production refers to the innovative practice of locating the targets of state violence through an analysis of the architectural backdrops of their social media feeds. Target Production is the crowdsourcing of military intelligence, hinging on the presumption that if contemporary terrorism practices have outsourced the difficultly of recruitment to crowd-based platforms such as Twitter and YouTube, then the difficulty of reconnaissance might equally be outsourced from costly ground-based intelligence gathering endeavors to lowrisk (and low-skilled) laborers surfing social media from Air Force

Targeting Products explores this outsourced mode of contemporary architectural criticism, using it to update the dominant media format through which the discipline has historically attempted to target the architectural preferences of the crowd: the Interior Lifestyle Magazine. Targeting Products is an experimental single-issue magazine whose production has been entirely outsourced to the fiction of the crowd by dividing the labor of its production into two discrete tasks performed by a four-hundred anonymous workers on the micro-labor platform Mechanical Turk (http://mturk.com). Task 01: Take a picture of yourself with your web camera. Using a photo editing software, erase yourself from the photo. Upload the resulting image as a .PNG file for a reward of $0.50usd. Task 02: Look at an image of a room with an erased figure in the foreground. Write six sentences of architectural analysis about the room. Using the details present in the image, speculate on the geolocation of the room. Upload the resulting paragraph as a .DOCx file for a reward of $0.50usd. The unedited crowd-sourced accumulation that follows is both an examination of the domestic architectural spaces of people erased through the fiction of the crowd-based labor, as well as the aggregation of an experimental mode of architectural criticism, currently mining crowds in order to erase people. 2_The tiling in the kitchen walls give the room a very welcoming vibe. It shows that the owner of the room is outgoing and fun. The large window in the room is also a nice addition because it adds sunlight. The trophies and awards hanging on the wall gives the room some life of it’s own. The wooden cabinets make the room look very warm. I believe this room is located in the United States. The reason is because of how the kitchen is designed.

1_There is a large black and white poster of a shirtless male model with a shaved head on the wall. To the left is another large wall poster of a woman in a very girly fairytale-esque setting. This is a bedroom based on the furniture in the room. There’s an old style smoke detector on the wall in the background. Judging by the posters, I’d guess this room was in America.

4_What a great living room! Cold blue-themed mystery room. Wide place of peaceful atmosphere. The paint is definitely unique and gives off a great vibe. It’s an expensive place to live, too. The artwork is something someone educated would put up, calming pictures you can stare at, dreaming of a better future, and the flat screen television isn’t cheap. The room is so inviting that it would seem like only an extrovert would appreciate these surroundings. Definitely a beloved space. Speculations about the place: Italy, the mother of a great artist who possibly inspired this woman to draw those paintings. Own home as room is quite big compared to the rental house.

3_This is a nice room. It appears to be a bedroom. There is a pretty blanket on the bed. The blanket has a nice design done in purple on it. There are some light switches on the wall, and the room appears to be bright. There looks to be some windows. The windows appear large and are covered up by a nice heavy curtain decorated with a gray background and floral pattern. The style of the room makes me think it is a bedroom located in India. The small size and patterns make me think that.

6_This is a fun, playful room. There are a few computer screens in the background. There is a dartboard on the wall. The person in the picture seems to be using two mouses. I think this is a casual work environment because of the line of monitors in the background. I also see laptop which means a person must be using the computer in different areas.

5_The interior is very comforting because of how dark and easy on the eye it is. The darkness really brings out the inner person in you, and helps you relax after a long busy day. The blackness really makes you sleepy, and helps you fall asleep and get some rest. The green paint is vivid, and really us unique, and brings out the happiness in people. I believe that this room is located in South America. I say this because in South America, it is usually the place where green is used to paint the interior, I say this because I have been there and it is a common color to be used in interiors of houses.

8_This is a bright room. The room is very colorful. IT has one wall painted green. The other wall appears white. However, there is a great picture on the wall. The picture is full of very colorful bright birds. There also appears to be a couch against the wall. The room could be in the southern US based on the bright colors and the bird picture.

10_The first thing you’ll notice are the walls. The walls are especially clean and well kept. The white color of the walls can really brighten up this room even if there aren’t any windows. This gives the room a calming feel, turning it into a place that cries out for a quiet night watching TV or chatting with friends. The doors are painted the same color as well which helps match. The large sofa in the room is a great addition because it adds comfort and matches the cream colored walls quite well. I believe the room is located in the United States because of the style of the doors and how the walls are well kept.

9_This picture is kind of blurry, but I see things on the wall. It looks like posters. There is a large piece of African art on the wall showcasing a tall slender woman in native dress. The walls are a nice color. The ceiling isn’t too high up and the room is well lit. I think this is a bedroom because of the posters. It looks like the computer is opposite where a bed would be.

11_The view from this particular view is spectacular. I love how this room has incredibly large windows which allows for the luscious green landscape in the background to almost permeate into the room. I am led to believe that this may be in an office due to the desk with the computer monitor and hard drive. The white walls really make the room feel clean and bright. The shelving on the walls also add a nice touch because you can store things. I also really like the storage space that this room has. If this isn’t a farm house possibly a pasture. By the looks of the land I’d guess this is in Europe. Perhaps Southern England.

13_The room is very dimly lit. There are a lot of pictures on the far left. I see a child’s basketball goal on the right. Under it, it looks like a stuffed sock monkey doll. I think it is sitting on a chair. I think this is a person’s bedroom because of the basketball goal and the sock money. It seems like a very personal room with items you would have in a bedroom.

12_The room has a lot of things inside it. There are a number of boxes on the overhanging shelf. The room has ample lighting, which makes it bright. It looks very lived in. The room could possibly be in a Southeast Asian city, like Jakarta or Manila. I’ve lived in both cities and this room is reminiscent of some of the rooms I’ve been to in those cities.

15_This room is special because of it’s large windows. The large windows allow for the sunlight to shine in making the room bright at all times. The large windows also provide you with a pretty nice view of the city. The choice of furniture in the background is a great addition. The red sofa really gives the room some life and makes it unique. I believe this room is located in Asia. The reason is because many Asian homes have the cloth that is located on the chair.

14_There is unfortunately very little to see here. There is a white wall in the background that does not have any holes or blemishes. There are no unsightly decorations hung or anything else taking away from the simplicity of the room. There might be some things on the other end of the room, or perhaps this an empty room designed for meditation. The room is clean and without fault.

17_This looks like someone’s bedroom or office. The room looks very comfortable and has many of the owner’s presumably favorite things on display. The furniture all matches, showing the owner didn’t have to piece together scraps and was able to afford the furniture of his choice. The TV on the desk is quite large and appears pretty thin/ modern. The walls appear plain, but it also gives the room a graceful feel. This room makes me feel like playing computer games. From the “PC Gamer” magazine to the huge monitor screen on the right, this room is begging for a gamer to enjoy it. I also love the shelves, which are a nice neutral tone and allow for organization. These shelves make me glad to have a place to set the game controls, mugs and toys I like in a place that doesn’t make the room look cluttered.

18_I really like the angle of this room because I am able to see the background wall as well as the ceiling. This definitely appears to be a bedroom. If I’m right I think I see the shadow of a large bed to the bottom left hand of the screen. Nice pictures on the wall brighten the room up a bit. Their arrangement is very creative and artistic. Maybe a bachelors pad. I like the clean white walls. If I guessed judging by the simplicity of the room I’d guess this was in Europe somewhere. Perhaps London.

21_Not a room here, but likely the outside the front of the building. Likely a college dormitory or apartments. The expansive view is calming and spectacular. The dormitory or apartment building is old but reliable. It’s well known locally and likely historic. Many generations have fond memories of the place.

20_The room has nice lighting. The wall color is a really nice shade of white. I think the shadows make it look more blue. There is a stairway in the background. 23_The painting on the wall in the corner adds life to the room. I love the floral painting in the background. The kitchen are in the background makes the room very convenient and you’re able to access many things. Furthermore I love how there is a cutout where you can visible see a kitchen and bar area in the background. The light is great as well because it isn’t too bright and has a nice dim to it. The white wall colors help make the room bright. The decorations all over the room give the room character. I believe the room is located in the USA. The reason is because of how the kitchen is designed.

22_This room is full of stuff, but not in an uncomfortable crowded way. The blinds are closed, but I can still see a nice view peeking out the window. There are a lot of papers on the desk, indicating that a lot of work gets done here. The furniture looks a little dated, but is still in great shape. The roll of paper towels indicates some cleaning needs to be done here or some food gets eaten here. Given the equipment and how modern the room looks, I think this is an office in the United States.

25_The brown desk is filled with interesting items, and the fan nearby matches it nicely. The white walls give the room a calming atmosphere and do a great job keeping distraction at bay. It’s a comfortable room, and the fan ensures people will not get too hot while in here. It’s probably a home office, since there is a desk here. This is hard to guess where it is. It looks like a small place, the writing on the packages may not be English, so perhaps a large city like New York.

24_That is excellent shelf placement! Having them directly above the bed within arms reach is a sensible place for books and similar items. I particularly like the top shelf being used for decorations. There is a bed in the background. There seems to be clothes on the bed as well. I think this is the person’s bedroom. 26_This is a nice tiled bathroom. It makes the room feel very “rich” and updated. I like that the shower is tiled on the ceiling as well. There’s something about tile, well-maintained, that just seems sanitary and clean. The shower curtain is an interesting checkered pattern as well. The curtains are a fun color of green which is different from the usual. The bathtub looks spacious and comfy. I’d guess that this bathroom is somewhere in the United States because the curtain looks like maybe a Target purchase.

The thing that makes the wall unique is that it is made of tiles. The tiles can help reflect light which is a great addition. It also gives the room some character. 27_An apartment in the poor part of town. The missing tiles on the wall in the background tells a story that this is a poor apartment in a poor part of town. Despite a bit of shabbiness, however, it’s a comfortable place and has been in the same family for a long time. The white walls help lighten the place up and there’s a functionality to the shelves that show it’s a cared for place. The open door to the left leads out to what appears to be the kitchen area that’s brightly lit from the radiant sunshine beaming through the uncovered windows. The room in the background is probably a kitchen with a pantry. The room in front is the living room with the computer.

29_As spartan as it gets. No furniture visible, no art on the walls. This could be anything from a living room to a bedroom to a basement room. The white paint on the walls, however, is there because it is used to spread the light to give off a calming feel while making the room appear larger. It’s likely a poor person’s place due to the lack of any distinctive design. It could also be a new home that has yet to be decorated. It shows promise, however, as there is plenty of room to put things on the walls to liven the place up.

It has a very unique design that you don’t see often. The color of the chair also matches the bed as well. The white walls and windows make the room look bright. I believe the room is located in the United States. The reason is because this is usually how a hotel room is designed in the USA.

31_The room appears to be a cosy and comfortable environment for one or two residents. There are two doors in that can be used for access to other rooms in the house. There appears to be a computer for use (as there is a keyboard). In the back of the room on the left hand side there is an appliance (possibly a radiator or microwave) that will allow for warmth or quick cooking. On the ceiling there is a fan that can keep the temperature of the room at a low on a hot day. On the fan there is also a light to keep the room lit during darker hours of the day. The paint colour is simple and not overly extravagant. Given the exotic coloring of the carpet, I think this room is in India.

34_The first thing you’ll notice is the color of the wall. The wall has sort of a tan color but not completely white. This color gives off a feeling that the room is very warm. It’s bright, but not too bright. You could spend a lot of time working here without straining your eyes. The room is very friendly and welcoming. The wall is also extremely clean and well kept. This makes the room feel very comfortable and relaxing. I believe the room is located in the USA. The reason is because of how well kept the room is.

This room is furnished with something that could be either clothes or a window covering. This room has functional walls. This is the person’s home. I can tell by the light of the room. The person is using their computer’s webcam. It also looks like a tv in the background. I think this is the person’s bedroom. The tv in the background and position the person is sitting in tells me that maybe the computer is against a window so the person can look out of it.Room in Albania; it just feels Albanian.

35_ A busy room as can be seen by the slapdash way the television has been set up. Very makeshift and likely due to space issues. It’s small but comfortable because lots of stuff is always going on. It seems like it might be an older place due to the size constraints and what appears to be a wooden shutter on the inside that closes over a window or mirror in the background. This room is likely a family room. It could, however, be a kitchen because the lighting appears to be the type seen in kitchens in houses in the suburbs. I would guess a suburban home on the east coast. The smallness of the house and the strange window in the background makes me think of a coastal region, perhaps Virginia or North Carolina or even points further south where shutters on windows might be used as protection against hurricanes.

37_An apartment living room in a small city. The picture on the wall is warm and inviting. The couch is colorful and while a bit old, it’s got a well used and appreciated look. The walls reflect light well and give the room a bright atmosphere. It’s a small place, but warm. The texture of the wall gives the place some vibrancy. This person is in their living room. I can tell that because of the couch and the picture.

38_The image is not of a room. I will do my best to be positive. The image is a green background with someones face in the foreground. The background could actually be a softly colored off white that is just a soft dull - lowly lit room. The green colors on the wall get me to think that is some of safe space when one can rest and relax. Although this design lets you to focus on your work so it can be used in very different way. People in this room can feel safe and concentrated on their things. The face in the foreground has been marked through as if electronically edited. You can dimly see the person’s face. It appears to be a man. He has dark hair and his hair neatly pulled back in a ponytail. In retrospect it almost looks like a painting of Jesus Christ.

40_Looks like a cozy little apartment. I believe I see a bar area. May a nice open kitchen with a bar sitting area. Looks like granite counter top. Nice orange and yellow pillows on the couch. Looks like a nice little suburban apartment perhaps in the lower eastern part of the USA.

39_ A den or study in a much older house. Notice the thick and deep window frames. That’s a sign of a solid house built to last when people cared about such things. No modern construction to be seen here. The blue paint is calm and comforting. The door leads directly out to the backyard so the person living here can step out for some fresh air. The blue painting on the wall also makes the room unique and not boring. I think the room is located in the United States. I believe so because Americans like to use different colored painting on their walls. The design of the door also feels like one that people would use in America.

42_The white walls of the room is probably the first thing you’ll notice. It’s white but not fully white. It has an off color of grey in it that makes it unique and special in it’s own way. The design of the chair in the background is also unique because of the craftsmanship that was put in it. I believe this room is located in Asia. The reason is because of the design of the chair. It looks very oriental.

41_ This room appears to be well built and designed. I believe there is ample closet space for clothes and personal items. The walls are empty which is cool as it allows the resident to decorate them the way he or she sees fit and hang personal stuff from them. There is a window which allows a lot of light into the room. And the window also provides a view down onto the tree lined street below. The room has a private connected bathroom which is convenient and affords greater privacy. Finally, there is ample space in the room. I think this room is located in the United States. I say that because it looks like dozens of college dorm rooms I’ve seen.

There is a lot of sunlight shining in through the window and I can see the top of a tree. There is a couch over to the side. I also see a table as well. 46_This room really gives off an urban feeling to it. This looks like it might be the inside a shopping mall. Perhaps a small shopping center. I see very nice wood panel walls. And a balcony with clear glass railing. It seems a little low lite. The lights are just right and the railings on the second floor makes the room feel luxurious. Like they need more lighting. If I had to guess I’d guess this store is in a location that is often cold and gloomy. Maybe Canada or even Iceland maybe.

45_The light blue color of the walls makes the room look very friendly. The rug that is hanging on the wall also makes the room look very exotic. The furniture in the room is very well kept and tidy. 48_This is a very minimalist room. I could only see a bare wall and white venetian blinds. I actually quite like it. It’s very calming and non-distracting. The horizontal blinds in this room match the cream colored walls very well. The window opens onto a green yard, which gives the entire room a calming and homey atmosphere. It looks like a great place to get some work done, or just sit back and relax. It also seems that the view outside the window is quite lovely, with the leaves and all. This room could possibly be somewhere in a suburban area in Colorado. The green outside the window makes me think this isn’t right smack in the city center.

47_There aren’t many details visible here, but there also aren’t any visible faults. The wall behind is smooth and unblemished and looks very sturdy. There is a bulletin board that looks fairly old but is still in completely usable condition. This room doesn’t appear to have many amenities, but it surely serves its purpose and protects people from the elements. There are no clashing colors in the room and the lighting is strong. I would guess this is in the middle east based on the empty room and curly headed silhouette.

This is someone’s bedroom because of the closet space and bedspread. The bed, I would assume, is right next to the computer area. 197_This is a smallish, yet comfortable looking room. There are a few pictures on display that give the room a homey feel. The chair the owner is sitting in looks especially comfortable and official. This appears to be an office where a lot of work gets done. The wires could be handled better, but perhaps the user hasn’t had time because business is busy/successful. I would guess that this is a standard office in the southern United States based on its size and lack of fanciness.

200_This is an entryway to a house that feels large. The heavy wooden doors broadcast authority and longevity. The glass allows someone to look outside to see who seeks entry into this roomy home. The white walls allow the reflection of light to make the entryway seem even bigger than it normally is. The airiness of this part of the house would seem welcoming to a guest. It’s a magnificent gateway into the rest of the beautiful home. The door appears large and old which means it’s likely in an older area of the country, perhaps New England.

199_The room has nice white paint. It looks like there is natural light coming in through a window that’s out of view. There is a white, plain lampshade on the corner. In the background, it looks like there are framed pictures. They all appear to be sheets of music that look quite old. It looks nice and classy. If I had to guess, I would say this is in a Western country like England because of the art on the walls and how clean the room is.

202_This looks like a well used office. This room has a lot of shelving space. There are open shelves as well and a lot of countertop space for computers. The room holds a lot of computers and monitors. The room looks very spacious. The room looks well lit and has a comfortable chair. There are no outside views to guess location, but I would guess a city instead of a rural area due to the business of the office. I am guessing somewhere in the southern US because there is a package from Publix in the picture, which is located in the Southern US.

201_The white walls in this room really make the room look clean. It also makes the room feel very bright as well. It gives off the feeling that the room is very friendly. The brown wooden closet in the background is a great addition. It’s only a light brown so that it matches well with the walls.I believe the room is located in the USA. The reason is because of how clean the walls are and the color of the closet door.

204_I really like the fact that the walls are white which can give off a clean feel. I also like that you’re able to hang your clothes so conveniently in the room. There isn’t much furniture but that’s okay because it makes the room feel simple yet effective. I believe the room is located in the Middle east because of the overall design of the room.

The lights are also very artistic and unique in their own way. I believe the room is located in the USA. I believe so because of the urban feel the room gives off.
