Curve Summer - Winter brochure 2024

Page 1

Amultitude of singular sensations await you at Curve this year. We are thrilled to share another jam-packed season of the best theatre, community events and shows for us all to enjoy across 2024.

Work which celebrates the experiences and amplifies the voices of young people is something that always matters and we are proud to be championing this with Nick Ahad’s adaptation of THE BOY AT THE BACK OF THE CLASS, a beautiful story of acceptance. And our DMU co-production this year is Jane Austin’s PRIDE AND PREJUDICE, lovingly given a fresh lick of paint by our Associate Director Cara Nolan. Our incredible youth and community companies have been working hard to stage a selection of plays and musicals, which will be performed as part of the CYCC SHOWCASE. With workshop and community days programmed across the year, we hope you’ll find something for the young imaginations in your lives to enjoy (our productions of THE LION INSIDE and PIRATES LOVE UNDERPANTS promise to be highlights).

Following the massive success of last year’s summer musical 42ND STREET, we are hugely excited our acclaimed production of A CHORUS LINE returns for summer ‘24. Ellen Kane’s electrifying choreography is worth the price of a ticket by itself and we are thrilled to present a lineup of some of this country’s most talented performers. The company is led by dance legend Adam Cooper, alongside Curve regular leading ladies Carly Mercedes Dyer and Jocasta Almgill. They are joined by an astonishing company who will literally dance up a storm in one of the most moving and original musicals ever created. See A CHORUS LINE first in Leicester before it plays London’s Sadler’s Wells and embarks on a UK tour.

The upcoming run of shows is punctuated by a series of one nighters and shorter runs: Rob Madge’s critically acclaimed, life affirming and award-winning solo turn in MY SON’S A QUEER, Jasdeep Singh Degun and Graham Norton all swing by Orton Square this year.

The roller coaster footie success story up the road at King Power continues and this summer our community production celebrates the astonishing story of LCFC. A new play, FANTASTIC FOXES is by Curve regular and rising star writer Rob Ward. Performed by our community ensemble, it promises to be a hilarious, heart-warming and chaotic scramble through over 100 years of club and community history.

Our new MADE AT CURVE production of the much loved 80s movie AN OFFICER AND A GENTLEMAN enjoying a successful tour and flies in to Leicester this autumn. The company is led by Curve acting regulars Luke Baker and Paul French and their performances are breathtaking and very moving.

This autumn we re-visit Katori Hall’s multi award-winning masterclass THE MOUNTAINTOP. Under director Nathan Powell’s inspired leadership, actors Ray Strasser-King and Justina Kehinde staged a profoundly moving and highly charged rehearsed reading of the play last year. For the few who saw it, it is something we will never forget. A short run wasn’t enough and the fully executed production promises to be an electrifying and emotional night of unparalleled drama, reflecting on the life of the mighty civil rights leader Dr Martin Luther King.

We are pleased to continue supporting the development of new musicals and after the success of recent new shows RIDE and THE BOOK THIEF, we are excited to welcome Lourds Lane’s SUPERYOU to Curve this year. It’s an extraordinarily exciting piece of new music theatre, which has gathered a strong wind of positivity behind it, following workshop and concert stagings both here and in New York. Equally exciting is the new musical 101 DALMATIANS which promises to give our theatre dog Billy a run for his money as Curve’s top dog, when the puppies and Cruella De Vil, played by Steps' Faye Tozer Leicester this year.

And of course, the highlight of any year at Curve is the magical festive season; this year our big musical is the joyful and utterly magical MY FAIR LADY cast will be announced soon and with the combination of Michael Taylor’s lavish design, Jo Goodwin choreography and George Dyer’s beautiful musical arrangements means this is a production not to be missed. We look forward to welcoming you to Curve again soon and please pardon our appearance whilst building works are happening out front on the iconic facade of the theatre.

TUE 4 – SAT 8 JUN • THEATRE

There used to be an empty chair at the back of the class, but now a new boy called Ahmet is sitting in it. He’s nine years old (just like me), but he’s very strange. He never talks and never smiles and doesn’t like sweets – not even lemon sherbets, which are my favourite!

After learning that he has fled his own war-torn country, Ahmet’s classmates have ‘The Greatest Idea in the World’ – a magnificent plan to reunite Ahmet with his family. An unexpected and often hilarious adventure follows, all topped off with a terrific twist.

Told from a child’s perspective, balancing heart and humour, THE BOY AT THE BACK OF THE CLASS highlights the power of friendship and kindness in a world that doesn’t always make sense and reminds us that everyone needs a place to call home.

Running time: 2 hours, including a 20 minute interval Age guidance: 7+

THE NEW DOLLY PARTON MUSICAL. PRIOR TO WEST END!

For the first time ever, all of Dolly Parton’s biggest hits can be experienced together in a rollicking and joyous new musical comedy.

Packed with the iconic songs Jolene, 9 to 5, Islands in the Stream, I Will Always Love You, Here You Come Again and more, this lively and touching new musical tells the story of a diehard fan whose fantasy version of international icon Dolly Parton gets him through trying times.

With her wit, humour and charm, Dolly teaches him a whole lot about life, love and how to pull yourself up by your bootstraps… even if your bootstraps don’t have rhinestones! This is one musical that is sure to make you smile.

After several successful productions across the United States, HERE YOU COME AGAIN was originally written by two-time Emmy award-winning comedy and songwriter Bruce Vilanch with Gabriel Barre (who also directs) and Tricia Paoluccio (who also plays Dolly), and has now been adapted for the UK by acclaimed British playwright Jonathan Harvey (Curve's BEAUTIFUL THING, GIMME, GIMME, GIMME and CORONATION STREET).

Curve and De Montfort University (DMU) present a brand-new retelling of Jane Austen’s PRIDE AND PREJUDICE. Adapted and directed by Curve’s Associate Director Cara Nolan, the lively and riotous take on Austen’s classic romance will be performed by drama students from the university.

‘It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife…’ Mr Darcy does not want a wife and Elizabeth Bennet does not need a husband. But when their paths cross, the greatest reluctant love story of all time begins. Can each overcome their own pride and prejudice? Expect regency romance, rebellion, wit and many a well-penned letter!

Written and performed by Rob Madge and directed by Luke Sheppard, the award-winning MY SON’S A QUEER, (BUT WHAT CAN YOU DO?) is back for 2024.

Once a cult sensation, Madge’s show has grown in stature to become WhatsOnStage Award winning and Olivier Award nominated and now due to public demand is set to embark on a brand new national tour visiting seven brand new venues.

When Rob was 12, they attempted to stage a full-blown Disney parade in their house for their Grandma. As Rob donned a wig and played Mary Poppins, Ariel, Mickey Mouse and Belle, their Dad doubled as Stage Manager, Sound Technician and Goofy. Unfortunately, Dad missed all his cues and pushed all the floats in the wrong direction. Mum mistook Aladdin for Ursula. The costumes went awry and Ariel's bubble gun didn't work properly. Grandma had a nice time though.

MY SON’S A QUEER, (BUT WHAT CAN YOU DO?) celebrates the joy and chaos of raising a queer child and is testament to the power of unconditional familial love.

Running time: 1 hour 10 minutes with no interval Age guidance: 12+. Contains some swearing, a fair bit of precociousness and scenes of utter joy. May cause happiness!

FRI 26 JUL – SAT 3 AUG • STUDIO THEATRE

This is the story of a remarkable city, fearless underdogs and FANTASTIC FOXES. The story of a football club and its generations of devoted fans. From the creation of the Leicester Fosse team in 1884 to the first silverware in 1890, the great escape of 2015 and the 5000-1 Premier League win of 2016 – plus all the heartache and elation along the way: no matter how our city has changed over the years, we’ve always been united as the Blue Army.

This summer at Curve, a community ensemble brings the real (and sometimes imagined) story of our city and club to life on stage, where Jamie Vardy’s having a party, Gordon Banks has the safest gloves in the land and Gary Lineker’s picking out his best pants.

‘A Loverly Made at Curve Christmas Musical’

Following the incredible EVITA and wonderful WIZARD OF OZ, this year’s smashing, positively dashing MADE AT CURVE Christmas musical is the magical MY FAIR LADY

This iconic period musical follows Eliza Doolittle, a cockney flower seller in Covent Garden, who by chance meets phonetic professor, Henry Higgins. As part of a wager with his best friend Colonel Pickering, Higgins sets out to reach Eliza how to speak like a lady of high society – but learns a few lessons of his own along with way.

Filled with comedy and romance, this charming Christmas treat is filled with dazzling songs, including The Rain In Spain, Wouldn’t It Be Loverly and I Could Have Danced All Night.

This unmissable production will be brought to life by a creative team from across our MADE AT CURVE productions, including Artistic Director Nikolai Foster (EVITA, THE WIZARD OF OZ), Choreographer Joanna Goodwin (AN OFFICER AND A GENTLEMAN – THE MUSICAL), Set and Costume Designer

Michael Taylor (AN OFFICER AND A GENTLEMAN – THE MUSICAL, WEST SIDE STORY, WHITE CHRISTMAS, SCROOGE), Musical Supervisor George Dyer (BILLY ELLIOT THE MUSICAL, WEST SIDE STORY), Lighting Designer Mark Henderson (WHITE CHRISTMAS), Olivier Award-winning Sound Designer Adam Fisher (EVITA, BILLY ELLIOT THE MUSICAL) and Casting Director Olivia Laydon (A CHORUS LINE).

This production of MY FAIR LADY is sponsored by De Montfort University (DMU), with the show’s orchestra sponsored by music licensing company PPL

IMPORTANT UPDATE TO BOOKING FEES

Curve has enjoyed a successful year, creating and presenting extraordinary work on our stages and engaging our many communities through our inclusive programme of participation and learning.

We are incredibly proud of our subsidised pricing and free and low-cost events which make Curve accessible to as many people as possible. We will always protect that access and inclusivity.

At the same time, we are being confronted by increased costs and financial challenges. We have to ensure that we can continue to make and present world-class theatre for our audiences during a challenging economic climate.

Therefore we will be re-introducing a non-refundable £2 booking fee from Monday 1 July 2024. The fee will be added to all new orders where a monetary value is attributed to the ticket. To keep the impact as minimal as possible, this will be a flat fee of £2 that is not linked to the number of tickets you are purchasing. It will be clearly signposted alongside the advertised ticket price and will be added to your order at the end of the transaction. The fee will be directly reinvested into activities both on and off our stages.

Nobody likes price increases, but your continued support will enable us to continue to offer outstanding theatre whilst keeping Curve open to all.

For full information including our terms and conditions of sale and acceptance, which includes the aforementioned booking fee please visit curveonline.co.uk and click on terms and conditions.

ACCESS PERFORMANCES ADDITIONAL SERVICES

CAPTIONED PERFORMANCES (CAP)

At Captioned performances, the actors’ spoken words are shown as visible text via two display screens on stage, one on each side, similar to subtitles. The text scrolls at the same speed as the dialogue, making it easy to follow with the action on stage.

SIGNED PERFORMANCES IN BRITISH SIGN LANGUAGE (BSL)

Our BSL Interpreted performances are presented with British Sign Language (BSL) interpretation. The interpreter will be positioned on either the left or right of the stage throughout the performance, and their position will be confirmed online once available.

AUDIO DESCRIBED PERFORMANCES (AD)

During these performances, audio describers provide a live, verbal commentary on key visual aspects of the show for audience members who identify as Blind or sight impaired. The description is presented via a personal headset (available from the Box Office) and includes an audio introduction to the show before the performance starts.

DEMENTIA FRIENDLY PERFORMANCES (DF)

Dementia Friendly performances are tailored to meet the needs of people living with dementia. They include adaptations to the show, clearer visual markers and signage in the physical environment, and a relaxed attitude to movement and audience responses during the show.

RELAXED PERFORMANCES (RP)

Relaxed Performances are open to anyone who would benefit from a more relaxed performance environment. Audience members can interact with the performance in their own way and, while the theatre doors will close, guests can leave and re-enter the theatre at any time. We also make adaptations to the show, and reserve a quiet space for anyone needing some time out of the performance.

TOUCH TOURS (TT)

An accompaniment to Audio Described performances, Touch Tours are a tactile tour of the stage, set and costumes, giving audience members who are blind or sight impaired greater access to the performance. Tours usually take place 90 minutes (or earlier) prior to the start of an Audio Described performance.

INFRA-RED & INDUCTION LOOP HEARING SYSTEMS

Available in our Theatre and Studio Theatre. Please ask at the Box Office for a headset.

ASSISTANCE DOGS

Dog spaces are available upon request; please let us know during the booking process and a seat next to the aisle will be reserved for you. Alternatively, a member of staff can care for your dog during the performance. We can also provide drinking water.
