SHOW-RELATED LEARNING

Hi there – we have some really exciting opportunities for schools coming up at Curve, and it’s my pleasure to highlight a few of them for you here. There are a whole range of Made at Curve shows for which we can offer workshops – either in school or here in our magnificent building. The Cat in the Hat offers KS 1 and 2 sessions developing language and writing alongside physical movement. Memoirs of an Asian Football Casual workshops give KS 4 and 5 a punchy insight into the show and its themes of identity and society’s attitude to violence; while for a completely different flavour on the 19th December there is an unmissable chance to explore the design and production elements of our show and see how the magic of Irving Berlin’s White Christmas is created on stage. Finally no dance staff or students should miss Akram Khan Company Masterclass on 22nd September, in support of the stunning show Xenos. For group visits we have a range of shows offering curriculum support, engagement and enrichment-in shows like Freeman and The Mountaintop, which have common themes which cross politics, History, English and more. Looking into next year, To Kill a Mockingbird and The Color Purple contain themes of prejudice, courage, empowerment and understanding woven through these two Made at Curve productions via the writing, characters and subject matter; one in the form of a play, the other a musical. Both provide an excellent vehicle for learning about history, morals and values, culture and literature through the arts of drama, dance, music or production. Why not book one of Curve’s learning workshops led by our education team and made bespoke to your group’s needs. You may be studying the text, preparing to write a live theatre review, developing skills as creators and performers, studying GCSE, A Level or Arts Award, or simply interested in finding out about how the work is made in the rehearsal room. Finally, please do contact us to discuss our developing plans for staff CPD opportunities. Our schools network meetings in October, February and June are a chance to input into our plans and tell us what you, as busy teachers, need from us. I do look forward to seeing you at Curve or in school soon. Andy Reeves Youth and Community Practitioner
