Welcome
Hello and a very warm welcome to Curve this Summer.
There is much to celebrate this year and 2022 is fast becoming Curve’s most ambitious programme of work to date. We are proud to share all of this exciting work with you and look forward to seeing you here over the coming months.
Our Made at Curve work takes centre stage this Summer, with a new UK production of the great British musical Billy Elliot and new writing in Finding Home Leicester’s Ugandan Asian Story at 50, both opening in July.
Rehearsals for Lee Hall and Elton John’s masterpiece Billy Elliot are underway, and it’s been a joy to bring the company (55 actors in total!) together to create a brand-new production of this much-loved musical. The combination of Lucy Hind’s exciting new choreography, Michael Taylor’s bold set design, Edd Lindley’s vibrant costumes and George Dyer’s immaculate musical direction, coupled with the raw energy and creativity of one of the most talented group of actors we have ever worked with, makes Billy Elliot a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for anyone who enjoys a trip to the theatre, It’s the perfect show to bring us all together and offers a welcome shot of joy during these challenging times. There’s still time to book tickets and as this will be the only place to see this new production in the UK
2
this year, we are beyond excited to share it with you here in Leicester.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Ugandan South Asian exodus, and a journey that began with trauma for so many. In this historic and hugely important year for our city, we are proud to work with our Ugandan South Asian communities and provide a platform for them to share their unique stories in our upcoming community production Finding Home –
Leicester’s Ugandan Asian Story at 50. Led by director
Mandeep Glover and local writers Chandni Mistry, Ashok Patel and Dilan Raithatha, these plays are a beautiful exploration of stories from the past 50 years and ultimately a celebration of this extraordinary community.
Our Made at Curve drama Maggie May finally appears on our stages. Having been postponed previously due to the pandemic, this incredibly funny and profound play by Frances Poet opened recently in Leeds and has gone on to garner fivestar reviews from critics and audience members alike for its moving exploration of how dementia can touch the lives of so many of us.
In October we welcome back our friends at Frantic Assembly, with their award-winning take on Shakespeare in our coproduction of Othello, Sister Act returns to Curve direct from
3
London and Associate Artist Aakash Odedra’s Samsara will open at Curve before heading out on tour.
Then we are finally journeying up the yellow brick road and off to the land of Oz. Promising to be the biggest and most extravagant Christmas Made at Curve production to date (wait until you see colin Richmond’s set design!), we are thrilled to be finally bringing The Wizard of Oz to our stage this year. There’s no place like curve at Christmas and we hope you and your family will join us for this spectacular production.
We are also delighted to welcome Dear Santa and The Very Hungry Caterpillar Christmas Show to our Studio Theatre in December, the perfect presents for your little ones this Christmas.
As well as our Made at Curve productions, there are some fantastic shows visiting us this year including Chess from the National Youth Music Theatre, Mamma Mia! For the very firs time in Leicester, Bugsy Malone and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel to name a few. We are also honoured to welcome the Darbar Fringe to Curve to celebrate the cultural relationship between the UK and the Indian subcontinent through music and performance in Leicester’s newest festival.
We are indebted to our principal funders Arts Council England and Leicester City Council and the DCMS Culture Recovery Fund for supporting Curve throughout the last two years. If it
4
wasn’t for this crucial investment in Curve, as well as the unwavering support from our audiences and communities, the theatre simply wouldn’t be here today.
Whether you’re seeing a show, taking part in a workshop, creating your own work or simply stopping by to meet friends in our Green Room Café, you’re always welcome and we look forward to seeing you soon.

A Frantic Assembly Production, co-produced with Curve Shakespeare’s Othello
Monday 19 September– Saturday 1 October 2022 | Studio
Frantic Assembly presents its award winning and electrifying take on Shakespeare’s tragedy of paranoia, sex, and murder. Othello’s passionate affair with Desdemona becomes the catalyst for jealousy, betrayal, revenge, and the darkest intents.
Frantic Assembly takes Shakespeare’s muscular and beautiful text, combines its own bruising physicality, and presents an Othello firmly rooted in a volatile 21st century. This is a world of broken glass and broken promises, of poisonous manipulation and explosive violence.
As relevant today as it ever was, Othello exposes the tension, fear and paranoia buried beneath the veneer of our relationships and how easily that can be maliciously exploited.
Following highly acclaimed runs in 2008 and 2014, audience favourite Othello returns this autumn with an updated version for 2022.

Phosphoros Theatre presents All The Beds I Have Slept In Wednesday 5 – Thursday 6 October 2022 | Studio
After a successful tour last Autumn that saw multiple sell out performances to audiences that included 500 refugee teenagers, All the Beds I Have Slept In returns with a new version and new refugee cast from Afghanistan, Syria, Sudan, Ethiopia, Eritrea and Morocco.
It recalls the hundreds of beds the actors have slept in on their journeys from their homelands to seek asylum in the UK. From a flat in North London to a Greek detention centre, supposed spaces of safety become transient; shelters are taken away without notice; and the route from one place to the next is fraught with obstacles.
The play is a shout-out to all the real people who kept the actors moving forward. It explores the hidden moments of hospitality that changes the course of a journey and how to repay them, using Phosphoros’ trademark with and energy to reveal the intimacy created between friends when family is absent, and how to stay hopeful in a world that isn’t fair.
