» A Message from the Publisher Being royal is more than a status; it’s a frame of mind. Being a pageant queen is more than wearing a crown; it’s dedication and hard work. These “Royal Models” have reigned in their arena by being positive role models and paving the way for future curvy pageant hopefuls. Reflecting on my participation in a pageant back in 2013, I was able to learn and build from my experience. I wanted to move in a direction that I felt could help impact other women and aspiring models. This direction consisted of building an awesome team and together creating a platform that would someday be international, hence CCM. I will forever remember my pageant experience, and I commend all of the pageant queens. May your dreams be big and your hearts bigger. Continue to hold your platform at the most high, and reign on!

» A Message from the Editor As I think of what to say about this “Royalty” edition of CCM, I thought about what it means to be a “queen.” There’s actual royalty such as Queen Elizabeth, pageant queens, Black queens, drag queens, and drama queens… Sometimes being described as a “queen” means you’re a ROYAL PAIN! Other times the word is used to describe a strong or admirable woman. Whether good or bad, any woman can be a queen in her own right; it’s up to her how she reigns. After all, the queen is the most powerful chess piece. She is able to move any number of unobstructed squares in any direction. With that being said, I am reminded of the song “Q.U.E.E.N.” by Janelle Monáe. You can check out the video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tEddixS-UoU

Are we a lost generation of our people? Add us to equations but they’ll never make us equal She who writes the movie owns the script and the sequel So why ain’t the stealing of my rights made illegal? They keep us underground working hard for the greedy But when it’s time pay they turn around and call us needy My crown too heavy like the Queen Nefertiti Gimme back my pyramid, I’m trying to free Kansas City Mixing masterminds like your name Bernie Grundman Well I’mma keep leading like a young Harriet Tubman You can take my wings but I’m still gonna fly And even when you edit me the booty don’t lie Yeah, I’ma keep sangin’, I’mma keep writin’ songs I’m tired of Marvin asking me “What’s Going On?” March to the streets ‘cuz I’m willing and I’m able

Categorize me, I defy every label

And while you’re selling dope, we’re gonna keep selling hope We rising up now, you gotta deal you gotta cope Will you be electric sheep? Electric ladies, will you sleep? Or will you preach? -Janelle Monáe, “Q.U.E.E.N.”

EDITOR’S Queen Diva,

Sonja Elise Freeman By: Jennifer Amoako

I first became acquainted with Sonja Elise Freeman, also known as “Queen Diva” on Facebook. Since then, I’ve seen how actively involved she is in her community and how passionate she is about her faith in God, pageantry, mental health awareness, and music. I reached out to her and asked her to share more. She has some great things coming up this month and throughout the rest of the year. I wish her all the best on her road to Broadway in 2017! I am the official Pageant Consultant for the Miss New York Plus America pageant and a member of the award-winning 2015/2016 Miss Plus America communications team. We received the 2016 Miss Plus America Productivity Award. My platform is Mental Health Awareness & Suicide Prevention. I am a Mental Health Advocate with the National Association of Mental Illness and Suicide Prevention (NAMI) and for the American Foundation of Suicide Prevention (AFSP) in NYC. On October 23, 2016, I will be participating in AFSP’s “Out of Darkness” walk in Manhattan for the second year. Join my P.I.N.K. Diamonds Dream Team and walk with me! Your donations are appreciated as well and will directly benefit the work of the foundation. My personal goal is to raise $500 and I’d like to raise $1,500 as a team. Learn more here: http://afsp.donordrive. com/index.cfm?fuseaction=donorDrive.par ticipant&participantID=1012669 Over the past three years, I have been performing my Broadway-bound “Strength of a Woman: A Phyllis Hyman Tribute” at fundraisers, birthday parties, health fairs and special events within the Greater New York City area to spread mental health awareness and suicide prevention. It is

14 Curvy Connect Mag :: August 2016 Royalty Edition :: curvyconnectmag.com

my mission to start a dialogue within African-American communities about the importance of mental health and suicide prevention. It is growing more and more in our communities and we must talk about it and deal with it. I perform the Phyllis Hyman tribute to share her musical legacy as well as her struggle with mental illness which led to her suicide. I am determined to take it to Broadway in September 2017 and looking for sponsors and financial backers to assist in making my dream a reality. I will be performing excerpts and taping live on Tuesday, August 23, 2016 at The Vibe presented by Mantic International. It is being held at The Living Room located at 125 St. Ann’s Avenue, Bronx, NY starting at 8PM. If you’re in the area, I’d love for you to come out and support! I also enjoy working as a Plus Model and was featured for National Curves Day 2015. Most recently I was a “mannequin” model at the Ashley Stewart Harlem store on June 18th. That was followed by me performing songs from my Phyllis Hyman tribute at the 2016 Juneteenth Festival! These two events were my “Road to Broadway Tour 2017” kickoff events! When I’m not out in the community or performing, I also have my blog “Diva’s Diamonds.” I celebrated my 6th Anniversary in July! I also broadcast live on Periscope @ Divas_Diamonds. The Fight for

Financial Literacy By LaShonda Johnson

Financial-Literacy-1What is Financial Literacy? As defined in “Investopedia,” financial literacy is the possession of knowledge and understanding of financial matters. Financial literacy is mainly used in connection with personal finance matters. Financial literacy often entails the knowledge of properly making decisions pertaining to certain personal finance areas like real estate, insurance, investing, tax planning and retirement. It also involves intimate knowledge of financial concepts like compound interest, financial planning, the mechanics of a credit card, advantageous savings methods, consumer rights, time value of money, etc. Financial-Literacy-2According to excerpts from the 2015 “Strategy for Assuring Financial Empowerment (SAFE) Report issued by The Financial Literacy and Education Commission formed under the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act of 2003 by the

United States Treasury Department, evidence shows that many young people lack the financial knowledge needed to make sound decisions. The SAFE Report also states the following: The latest National Financial Capability Study found that young adults answered fewer questions correctly about basic financial concepts than older cohorts. Only 30 percent of young adults (ages 18-34) rated their financial skills as “very strong.” The young people surveyed see the value of early financial education, with nearly 86 percent saying that financial education should be offered in school. Yet, only 36 percent of young adults surveyed have been offered financial education, and only 22 percent have received financial education. But if the needs are great, so are the potential benefits both to the nation’s young people and to America as a whole. By helping young Americans to develop financial knowledge, skills and habits, we strengthen

{Finance}

our nation’s families and communities. We open up opportunities and extend ladders of economic mobility. We help to build stronger families and a more vibrant, more prosperous economy In reading this report, it is evident that a serious problem exists in our country concerning financial literacy. It is also not just a young adult problem. Young adults age to become older adults and also become parents of younger adults. Thus the task of our US Treasury Department is to formulate a plan to address this issue. One company that is joining the US Treasury Department in its initiative to eradicate financial illiteracy is Transamerica and World Financial Group/ World System Builder. World System Builder is the largest organization in World Financial Group lead by WFG Executive Chairman, Xuan Nguyen. Xuan Nguyen and his team of 15+ thousand financial professionals have pledged to financially educate 1 million people by the year of 2020. Financial-Literacy-PicFinancial Literacy 2Financial Education Workshops will be conducted at Financial Centers located across the United States and Canada, covering topics such as “Building the Proper Finan-

cial Foundation,” “Debt Management,” “Retirement Planning,” “Proper Protection” and “Building Wealth” to name a few. Workshops are complimentary to participants, and class materials are under $10. As a Certified Financial Educator, I continuously see the adverse effects, long term and short term, on individuals’ finances when making financial decisions without the proper knowledge. I strongly advise everyone to invest the time to participate in forums providing financial education. For more information on Workshop schedules and to locate a Financial Center near you contact us at info@houstonhousewivesoffinance.com or World System Builder at info@worldsystembuilder.com.

I know what you might be thinking… Didn’t she just say that she would never? I know I know, but this is a journey that I am glad I decided to venture on and here’s my story.

I can remember growing up and catching a few pageants on television gawking in awe at these gorgeous women thinking I look nothing like any of them. So naturally I quickly abandoned that thought and all hopes of participating in anything that remotely looked like a beauty pageant. Besides that, I never really thought I was beautiful or gorgeous like them and I was considered to be overweight, heavy set or just called fat. I can recall three specific times in my life where this sentiment was solidified in my thoughts. Firstly during my childhood by my grandfather, he almost never called me by my name. He called me “Fat girl.” And to be honest with you the first time I remember him calling me by my name, I was a sophomore in college. By that time I had begun to lose some weight and had went home during the holidays to visit. In that moment I felt accepted. I felt like he actually saw ME and not just a “fat girl”. Second, in high school the phrase “Fat, black, and ugly” was the description of me that a guy gave. This phrase alone has stuck with me the longest. I didn’t realize how much this bothered me. I think because this is how another person saw me, I felt like this is how everyone saw me and eventually how I began to see myself. As an adult in my early 20’s I had a doctor tell me that I was a very

pretty girl, but I was too fat and needed to lose some weight. These were her words and for me that was it! I was tired of the interjections. So needless to say I switched doctors. As I got older I made some great accomplishments. I graduated college with my bachelors and master’s degrees, started a career in criminal justice and finally met a great guy and got married! Even with all of that greatness, I can still remember looking for images of women that looked like me for validation or as an affirmation that I was doing something right and my dreams were attainable. Yet thanks to the media I always came up short.

I had been married to my husband for six months when he was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy and congestive heart failure out of the blue. On September 9, 2009, I found myself in the hardest position ever, having to say good bye to the love of my life, my best friend and confidant. The month that followed was the most emotional experience EVER. It was like I had been hit by a wrecking ball in my gut. On the outside I tried to be strong and smile. However when I was alone, I cried until I couldn’t cry anymore. I screamed until I was hoarse. My heart hurt so bad at times I felt like I couldn’t breathe. This was almost the bottom for me. I knew I was falling and I was cognizant of the fact that something had to be done. I went to see my physician and was diagnosed with high blood pressure. Even though I have a family history of high blood pressure, this life event helped to push it to the surface. I knew that I didn’t want to remain

28 Curvy Connect Mag :: August 2016 Royalty Edition :: curvyconnectmag.com

in this grieving state. I decided that I wanted to celebrate my husband’s memory, bring awareness, and get off of the high blood pressure medication that I was on. I came across an advertisement for the American Heart Association Heart Walk. So I signed up as a participant and joined the walk. I began to incorporate a healthier diet and exercise into my lifestyle.

After the death of my husband, several other life events happened that made me realize that I had been doing so much for other people that I had neglected my own talents and abandoned my dreams. My fear of stepping out of my comfort zone was covered by thinking that if I helped others fulfill their dreams I’d be content. That wasn’t the case. I thought to myself that I don’t want to leave this earth having any regrets or missing any opportunity to try something new. It was then that I started my confidence-building journey. I began to tap into things I had dreamed of doing. Taking one step at a time out of my comfort zone, I began to take chances and put myself out there not caring about the critique of others. In my search for new things to try, I came across an advertisement for a full-figured contest on Facebook, I entered and WON!!! That was just the boost I needed. I finally found women that looked like me that were ambitious, different yet all beautiful and I was so excited. I was exposed to the full-figured community that I never knew existed. I began to model in fashion shows, act in plays, and sing again. I met designers, boutique owners, and get this… PAGEANT QUEENS!!!

Can you imagine my surprise when I saw these beautiful full-figured women donning these big sparkly crowns? I was amazed and shocked, because I had never heard of a plus-size pageant. Several months later, lo and behold I saw another advertisement on Facebook looking for applicants for a Plus pageant. I pulled up the application and halted. I began to have those thoughts of not being pretty enough or good enough to enter. I shook that off and fearfully filled out the application anxiously awaiting my new adventure. I was later contacted and informed about the pageant system and explained the process. I was given a mini interview, coached by the best and given my first crown as Ms. Harris County Plus America. The next stop was the Miss Texas Plus America state pageant. This was my first pageant ever. I looked around at these women like, “Wow! They do exists and they are doing some awesome things in their community.” When it came down to the competition, they were bringing it with their elaborate pant wear and fabulous gowns! My wardrobe did not compare. However, I was committed to the process and the journey that I began. So with a pant suit that I already had in my closet and a $48 fuchsia dress, I competed. By the end of the weekend I had been crowned Ms. Texas Plus America 2015. I was elated! I had accomplished a goal and overcame a fear. I went on to nationals that year to become the overall talent winner during the optional competition. However, I didn’t win a national title. That year I went on to promote my platform and make appearances as Ms. Texas Plus America 2015. At the end of my reign I crowned my successor and made the decision to compete again at the national pageant as an at-large delegate. Fast forwarding through all the hard work and preparation for the pageant, on finals night I made the top 15 and was crowned Ms. Plus America 2016. For me this pageant was not just about beauty and fashion, but it helped me to come face to face with the woman I am today. I realized that the image of strength, courage, and confidence that I had been searching for had been staring me in the face the whole time. The result of that realization is what I presented on stage. Being in the presence of other women who have also overcome their share of obstacles, trials and tribulations and to listen to them share their stories of resilience provided an atmosphere of love, acceptance and hope. Even though we were competing I found myself cheering the other women on. The sisterhood that was formed is one that I wouldn’t trade for the world!

Miss Texas Plus America During my reign as Miss Texas Plus America 2016 I have been able to mentor young girls and young women regarding body image issues and self-confidence. I have been able to be a beacon of light for females struggling to accept their body and combat the societal constructs of what beauty truly is. As Miss Texas Plus America 2016 I am working to create a social media campaign “More 2 Me” which allows people all over the world to express that there is more to them than what meets the eye. “Beauty is being the best possible version of yourself on the inside and out”.

I love sundresses! Whether they are long and flowing or short enough to show off my legs sundresses are a summertime staple and a great way to transition into fall. While the weather is hot, a sundress and sandals is my favorite “go to” outfit because I can dress it up or down with accessories as well as with my hairstyle and make-up. As the cool autumn breeze blows through, I can add a cardigan, wrap, or denim jacket and swap my sandals for boots. No matter the season, one thing remains true… I have thick thighs, which I consider an asset. However, the down side for those of us that have big thighs is that we’re prone to chub rub. Our thighs rubbing and sticking together underneath our dresses is no fun. If we don’t do something about it, it can actually rub our skin raw and become painful. So before we have to walk like a cowboy that’s been riding a horse all day, I’ll offer you a solution. Bandelettes are sexy and functional anti-chafing thigh bands. Once you put them on, they stay in place until you take them off. Your thighs are protected without having to wear an extra layer such as shorts. Bandelettes are available in sizes A through F and in several colors from nudes to black. I really like the sexy lace options (and so does my husband) but my personal fave is the unisex spandex pair. They are extremely comfy to wear. The key to getting the perfect fit is to measure your thighs BEFORE you order. I wear a size F. And great news for our international friends! Bandelettes ship worldwide. Click here https://mbsy.co/d6mql to shop and make Bandelettes a mainstay in your wardrobe this sundress season.

For those of you who want to have a little fun with your makeup, we offer this shade-changing lip gloss. Yes, it looks ghastly green in the tube, but upon touching your lips, it transforms into a lovely princess pink (hence its name, Frog Prince). Lipstick Queen Frog Prince Lip Gloss, $25, available at SpaceNK.

Fans of nude, pink, and berry tones — and furry friends — will love Tarte’s highly pigmented glosses. The vegan formulas contain a generous dose of smoothing and hydrating castor-seed oil. Tarte Tarteist Glossy Lip Paint, $20, available at Tarte.

In recent months, we’ve noticed an onslaught of lip products that marry the highshine quality of traditional glosses with the opaque pigmentation of liquid lipsticks. Say “I do” to Maybelline’s new Color Jolt Lip Paints, a prime — and ridiculously affordable — option. Maybelline Color Jolt Instant Lip Paint, $9.99, available at Ulta Beauty.

Not only is the faux lipstick tube handy, but the tapered doe-foot applicator makes it super-easy to draw within the lines. Our favorite shade of the bunch? Artifice — a fiery orange-red that we’ll be rocking for sunsets, bonfires, and beach days alike.

Lancôme’s new bi-phase lip oils combine the sweet-smelling glossiness of the brand’s iconic Juicy Tubes (‘90s kids, remember those?!) and its cocktail-inspired Shaker lipstick from 1946. The result is a fun, shakable product that comes in a whopping 20 shades.

Dior Addict Fluid Stick, $35, available at Sephora.

Touch In Sol Waterdrop Tint, $22, available at Sephora.

Buxom Full-On Lip Cream, $20, available at Sephora.

Stop! Dieting Is there a bigger misconception than the relevance of dieting? What is dieting anyway? Dieting is restricting the type or amount of food being consumed and is always presented as a short term endeavor. What’s wrong with this? Just about everything, but the most obvious is ‘short term’. The weight comes off for a brief period and then goes right back on. This is the ‘yo-yo’ syndrome and there have dozens of clinical studies done in the last year that prove short term dieting does not work and in many cases can be more harmful than not doing anything. An individual is either happy with how they look or they are not. If you are a curvy girl and that’s okay with you - and there’s no reason it should not be! - then you don’t need to diet. Why would you? Because ads for weight loss pills and diet programs tell you should? Nonsense! If you are healthy and happy with yourself, be happy! No dieting required. If you are not happy with how you look, dieting won’t help. If you are seeking to modify your weight or appearance, what you are looking at is lifestyle change. Don’t think you can do something for three weeks or 2 months - then drop it - and expect any changes to be permanent. Think only of full lifestyle changes, and do it in stages you can live with. Don’t drink 10 glasses of water a day for 12 days. Drink an extra glass of water every day, from now on. Don’t attempt to do 2 hours of cardio a day for a month and then quit. Pledge to do half an hour of cardio every day, or five days a week - from now on. Make your changes long term, realistic goals and you will succeed in changing your life where diets will not.

Stop! Cursing This is such an easy change to make and one that can have such profound effects on how you are perceived, it’s worth talking about. I’m a firm believer in cutting cursing from conversation and it’s not for any pious reasons. It just makes good social sense. I am all about achieving objectives and realizing there are elements to include and exclude in one’s approach to success. Several years ago at a family picnic, my niece (then 14) dropped the ‘F’ word in spirited conversation. I promptly assured her she was not too big for a spanking and I’d better not hear that language again or else.

This was the first time I’d ever really scolded her about anything. The shock of being admonished made a pretty big impact. That (coupled with the fact that I didn’t indicate at what age ‘too big’ takes effect) pretty well ensures I’ll have a clean talking young lady for many years. I’m pleased to say that it’s now habit for her to express herself in different ways. Why am I so adamant on this? It’s not prudery believe me. I can have the most colorful vocabulary on the planet. I make a conscious effort not to. When I was less controlled and a string of expletives peeled out, I would immediately look around. Who heard that? Did I offend anyone? No one wants to be the boor or the tart at the party. Now that I keep vulgarity out of my conversations, I never have to worry. We judge people by their words and profanity is ‘the easy way out’. Cutting it from your conversation will give you more confidence and less worry and may just give you that tiny edge in social situations. It’s now a game I play with myself, coming up with inventive phraseology in situations where cussing might otherwise have been inserted.

Stop! Texting & Driving How pervasive is texting and driving? It’s absolutely ingrained in our culture. We all text, we all drive and it is so easy to pick up that phone while in the car and not even think about it. We’ve all seen the car wrecks, we’ve all seen the PSA’s and heard the tales of those who have lost loved ones. I have two separate nasty incidents in my own family that were caused by texting and driving. The results of these accidents will last the lifetimes for those involved. We all know it’s wrong. Even those who admit to texting and driving say they realize it is dangerous and irresponsible. So why does it still happen? Part is the commonality. We all have phones, we all have cars. Our non-stop lifestyles seem to dictate that we have to be on call every second of every day. It’s easy to target teenagers as the ones doing all the texting and driving. They do represent a fair share of those distracted drivers. But it’s not teenagers exclusively by any stretch. What seems to me - and this is not scientific, just a personal observation - is that it’s not young drivers who are totally at fault,

but rather inexperienced drivers. There are people of all ages who actually drive very little. They have few ‘road hours’ under their belts and maybe only take the car short distances several times a week. These are the drivers - of all ages - who seem to fall victim to the texting and driving temptation. A couple of seconds of inattentiveness behind the wheel can impact the rest of your life. We want you around as long as possible. Your significant other wants you around, your kids, your parents, your sisters and BFFs. Love yourself and those who love you and don’t endanger your life for a few seconds of phone time.

Stop! Negative Inner Dialogue This is the most important one, isn’t it? Negative self-talk can destroy, it can squash your every effort to make changes or achieve your goals. This may also be the hardest to do. It’s not enough, I don’t think, to just try and ‘not think about it’. I think cutting negative self-talk is something that needs to be addressed on a conscious level. One thing you can do is to start to associate with positive people. Sometimes that not always easy, particularly in work situations, but in your personal life, you can make those changes. Negative people aren’t just those who openly insult or give those backhanded type of criticisms ‘oh honey, you’re so pretty for a big girl’. Negative people are those who dismiss your fears, tell you you’re imagining something or downplay your anxieties. Identify negative people for what they are, distance yourself from them and surround yourself with positive thinkers. Something I’ve done personally is relegate the past to the past. The past is there for reference, for guidance, for taking the good parts or the useful parts and implementing them. The ‘bad’ parts are history. Good memories are there to make you feel better, the negative ones don’t exist. I don’t relive my errors or dwell on my mistakes. They mean nothing to me and thus can’t hurt me. Finally, find an empowering statement you love, one that speaks to you personally and make it part of your vocabulary. For me, having gone through periods of self-doubt and depression, I happened upon the phrase ‘I’m my own best friend’. Something about that stuck with me, I quote it often and when I’m struggling, I remind myself of that. I say it out loud, or work it in to conversation. Find a positive phrase you love and make it your own. Be your own best friend.
