he World Cup, queen’s birthday, economic promise and a new editor have been making a buzz at Custom Media, publishers of BCCJ ACUMEN. So here is our latest recruit Kathryn Wortley to introduce herself as she takes on the formidable challenge of producing the official magazine of the British Chamber of Commerce in Japan.

“It is with much excitement— and butterflies in my stomach-— that I pick up the editorial reigns of BCCJ ACUMEN from Brandi Goode. I would like to thank her for her support and dedication to ensure a smooth transition.

My first month working on the BCCJ ACUMEN team has certainly been an interesting one. I was delighted to attend a BCCJ lunch event with former First Minister Lord Jack McConnell (see page 16). Having worked in Scotland for many years—for various NGOs and as a journalist—I was eager to hear his take on Scottish independence, and I was not disappointed.

His arguments provided an international perspective that commentators have argued is lacking in the debate. He mentioned the impact on Wales and Northern Ireland, an issue that is close to my heart given that I

was born in Northern Ireland and spent some years there working in local newspapers.

I went on to read Film & Media Studies and Japanese Studies at the University of Stirling and Kansai Gaidai in Osaka, and my love for Japan was born. I returned to Japan to work as a teacher before moving into cross-cultural services. Most recently, I was writing content for

the Export to Japan website at the British Embassy Tokyo.

I am delighted that my two passions—writing and Japan— have come together in ACUMEN. It is a privilege to work on such a distinguished publication. Not only does it speak to its membership by providing business and market insights alongside cultural and general interest pieces, but it is

accessible to a wider audience. I look forward to introducing myself to those of you I have not had the pleasure of meeting yet.

Japan is full of promise at present. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s measures to stimulate the economy are causing a renewed optimism. The Rugby World Cup 2019 and the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2020 not only enable Japan to showcase itself to the world, but to learn and develop from the hosting experience. These developments, I believe, spell even more exciting opportunities ahead for the BCCJ and its members.

Our boys in Brazil As this edition is delivered, all eyes will be on Brazil for the opening ceremony of the FIFA World Cup. In a host country where “the beautiful game” occupies pride of place, we can no doubt be guaranteed a good show. Like myself, I’m sure many of you are looking forward to the month-long display of world-class football and, of course, supporting England and Japan over a few drinks down at the pub. I would like to wish both countries success.

This June also marks the 88th birthday of Her Majesty the Queen.

MEDIA IT firm sells stake NTT Docomo Inc. is to make its first investment in Europe with information technology firm CertiVox UK Ltd., according to a press release dated 1 May. The London-based innovator has secured funding of $8mn from the telecommunications group—and current supporters Octopus Investments Ltd.—to speed up the development and reach of its M-Pin Strong Authentication Platform. This market-leading technology has the ability to replace password-based authentication without the need for thirdparty devices.

Nobuyuki Akimoto, senior vice-president and chief operating officer at NTT Docomo Ventures, Inc., told media the UK firm is a great example of the innovation going on in London’s Tech City, and the invention is ideally suited for today’s smart devices.

UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) Minister Lord Livingston said it is one of many high-value Japanese investments UKTI is supporting.

Fashion house set to expand The UK-based Burberry Group plc has set its sights on Japan for future expansion, The Guardian reported on 21 May. The luxury fashion house reported record sales and profit in the 2013–14 financial year.

Recently appointed Chief Executive Officer Christopher Bailey said the team was excited by the opportunities in Japan, which has the second-largest luxury market in the world.

Dentsu Inc. has plans to increase its overseas revenue following its purchase of the Aegis Group plc, adage.com reported on 13 May. The advertising giant bought the Aegis Group in March 2013 for $4.9bn, in the industry’s largest deal to date. Insiders report the recent

Gareth Edwards made a splash at the US premiere of Godzilla, www.walesonline.co.uk reported on 9 May. The Welsh director of the $160mn remake welcomed fans ahead of the UK release on 15 May. The original film—produced by Toho Studios in 1954—is about a giant monster, affected by nuclear radiation, that ravages Japan.

Experts team up for at-home health care A mental wellness programme in Birmingham, West Midlands, is working with Japanese health care experts to develop family-sensitive services, The Japan Times reported on 11 May. Leaders of the Meriden Family Programme, which provides services in people’s homes, were invited to join symposiums in Kyoto and Tokyo hosted by the National Federation of Mental Health and Welfare Party.

The joint initiative is in response to the high demand for at-home mental health services in Japan, which are rarely available due to staff shortages. A 2009 survey of 4,500 families found that 83% wanted home visits and advice.

The federation plans to send Englishspeaking nurses and therapists to Birmingham to acquire further knowledge in FY2015.

Store to stock Mt Fuji wine Marks & Spencer plc will become the first British high street retailer to stock Japanese wine, The Daily Mail reported on 10 May. The special variety is called Sol Lucet Koshu, meaning “the sun shines”. It is produced from a white grape—which has been eaten fresh in Japan for the past thousand years. The koshu grape is grown on the volcanic foothills of Mt Fuji, where small umbrellas are used to provide shade from intense sunshine.

Marketed as an accompaniment to sushi and tempura, the wine will initially be stocked in 70 stores and, if successful, rolled out nationwide.

Drum group unveils new masked show The UK’s longest-established taiko group is debuting a new show featuring masked choreography alongside thundering rhythms, The Blackpool Gazette reported on 1 May. This year marks the 20th anniversary of Mugenkyo, which was founded by Neil Mackie and Miyuki Williams after two years of extensive training in Japan. On their return, the pair established the UK’s first Centre for Taiko Drumming in a purpose-built facility in South Lanarkshire, Scotland. The centre is home to residential workshops for the public and master classes for taiko players.

Mugenkyo Taiko Drummers are Europe’s only professional touring company and have taken part in more than 1,000 performances throughout Europe and Japan.

t BCCJ events over the past month we’ve heard directly from senior figures involved in the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and the Rugby World Cup 2015 (RWC 2015). On 5 June, Paul Gauger—global head of international media & destination PR at VisitBritain and 2012 games media global leader—spoke at “Branding Japan: the Olympic Opportunity”, and Neil Snowball, business director of RWC 2015, addressed members at “2015 Rugby World Cup Update” on 26 May. We learned how the organisations involved emphasise diversity—of ideas, people and location—to deliver world-class experiences across communities.

They value cross-generational teams and multi-cultural collaboration, and create an inclusive culture, particularly at the volunteer level, of age, gender and skills.

Sport, and sporting events are, of course, a great equaliser but working in Japan doesn’t always offer such a level playing field.

At the end of May I attended the annual conference of the UK–Japan 21st Century Group (see page 17).

The group’s 2014 summary included recommendations on trade and investment, defence, the EU–Japan Economic Partnership Agreement, nuclear issues, global health and education. It also encouraged high-level UK representation at a “Womenomics” summit, to be hosted by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in September.

Currently in Japan, over 70% of university-educated women drop out of the workforce to get married—a massive brain drain for the economy. By better engaging half of the population, we are told the nation’s GDP could grow as much as 13%. The question is how?

At a recent presentation at Waseda University entitled “Developing Japan’s Workforce on

the Road to 2020: Examples from the UK” I outlined possible ways to encourage young Japanese to stay in the workforce and reach senior managerial level. Companies could overhaul outdated workplace practices, introduce a system of meritocracy, create an environment that favours results as opposed to presenteeism, and put resources into training and developing young people. This is not simply about Womenomics or women’s issues: it’s about re-educating older men, re-energising young people, and rebooting the system.

Last year I gave a speech about being a working woman in Japan at Gunma Women’s University. I was struck by the students’ ambition, English ability and strong appetite for working in multi-national environments, both in Japan and overseas.

Japan now has a oncein-a-generation opportunity to diversify its talent pool by including such students.

The UK and the BCCJ are poised to support Japan in the lead up to RWC 2019, and Tokyo 2020, when we have a great opportunity for knowledge transfer between nations. This is not simply about the delivery of major sporting events, but also the globalisation of Japan as a whole.

MEDIA boom in outlet malls Outlet malls—featuring shops selling discontinued or off-season items, unsold remnants, returned goods and so on at sharply reduced prices—began to take off in Japan in the late 1990s. In 2005, a second wave of construction began, with outlet facilities springing up in rural areas.

Since 2012, reports the Shukan Economist (6–13 May), Japan has experienced a third boom, involving both the opening of new outlets and the expansion of existing ones. The nation’s largest developer is Mitsui Fudosan Co., Ltd., with 12 outlets to date. The total sales turnover of all of Japan’s outlet malls in fiscal 2012 reached ¥269.3bn, up 24% over the previous year.

The second-largest developer, with nine outlets, is Mitsubishi Estate-Simon Co., Ltd., a 60–40 joint venture between Mitsubishi Estate and Indianapolis-based Simon Property Group Inc.— the largest publicly traded real estate firm in the US. The venture firm announced that the number of cash transactions in fiscal 2012 rose 9% year on year, to ¥47.9mn.

The outlets’ growth is due to three factors. One is the availability of on-site dining facilities, including quality restaurants and eateries that promote local products. The second is the strategy to encourage families to pay longer visits by providing amenities such as all-day free parking and leisure facilities, since many outlets are

a 60-to 90-minute drive from major urban centres. From April until June, the Gotemba Premium Outlet in Shizuoka Prefecture tied up with the Izu Ryokan Association to offer special deals on meals and accommodation.

The Seibu Group, with a similar plan, appeals to golfers in Karuizawa, Nagano Prefecture.

The third reason for growth is the ability of outlets to evolve according to demographic shifts and consumer preferences.

Previously, their merchandise mix had been primarily oriented towards women between the ages of 20 and 40. But, with more men and seniors visiting outlet malls, product selection has expanded to include kitchenware, sports apparel, confectionary goods, toys, watches, spectacles and hobby goods for photography.

One key strategy is to appeal to consumer expectations by offering something new, which is essential if the outlets want to attract repeat customers.

Greater efforts are being made to attract more foreign visitors.

With the designation of Mt Fuji as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the rise in overseas visitors is believed to be a factor in the 3% year-on-year growth in 2013 by the nearby Gotemba Premium Outlet. Signs have been added in English, Chinese and Korean.

In addition to sales staff speaking these languages, the outlet offers a call centre for foreign visitors, should they require language assistance.

A six-storey complex in Tochigi City houses a department store and government offices.

The Shisui Premium Outlet in Inba, Chiba Prefecture, is just a 10-minute drive from Narita International Airport. The location has made it popular with foreign travellers, an estimated 47,000 of whom are said to have visited since its opening in April 2013.

In consideration of the growing number of shoppers from predominantly Muslim countries, such as Indonesia and Malaysia, a prayer room has been added at the Shisui outlet. Two malls in Hokkaido have followed suit.

Public–private tie-up Meanwhile, the Nikkei Marketing Journal (21 April) reported on a

distinctive fusion of retail business and government. On 15 March, a new six-storey building that formerly housed the Fukuda-ya department store reopened in central Tochigi City after a threeyear hiatus.

The ground floor contains a branch of the Tobu department store. In addition to shops operated by well-known firms, the 125m2 ground floor includes a baby room for changing nappies and breast-feeding.

The remaining five storeys house the city government offices. The Tochigi Chamber of Commerce and Industry is credited with the innovation.

burger shop’s recruit plan As reported in the Nikkei Marketing Journal (14 May), Mos Store Company, Inc., a domestic hamburger chain with around 1,400 outlets, has announced a new system to address the challenge of recruiting quality staff. Employees will now have a choice of three hiring classifications that will determine the conditions for intercompany transfers.

The classifications, N, A and J, stand for national, area and jitaku (home), respectively. In the case of N status, staff can be transferred anywhere in the country. For those who choose A classification, transfers would be limited to within one of three regions: north Japan, east Japan or west Japan. And in the case of J status, there will be no transfers beyond a 90-minute, one-way trip from employees’ place of residence.

Wage levels are also applied based on the N, A and J designations, in descending order. Of some 350 workers who will come under the new system at 200-plus Mos Burger outlets, an average of 10% chose either N or J status, while the majority choose A classification.

By responding to workers’ needs, the firm is hoping the new policy will encourage quality staff to stay with the organisation.

firms offer novelty business cards Want to make a good first impression? The Aera weekly (28 April) introduced a firm that prints business cards on the surface of biscuits.

Sansan Inc. is a cloud-based business card management service in Tokyo that initiated their kukki meishi (biscuit business cards) operation this year. Through its Link Knowledge system, it organises kukki meishi and other meishi on web applications, and has given equally appealing cards to its own staff to distribute to people they meet.

The price of novelty meishi from a leading printer runs from ¥10,000 to ¥30,000 for 100 “cards”, but some firms have gone overboard on ingredients and

packaging, spending as much as ¥100,000 for 100 cards.

Sansan spokesperson Eri Isoyama said that individuals from whom her firm’s staff receive business cards are sent an app that introduces Sansan’s service.

“It’s okay for clients to eat the cookie, because the app we send them carries the same data that’s printed on it”, she said.

Nissin Foods took a similar tack last autumn by printing business cards in the shape of the firm’s cup noodles and other familiar products.

Another firm, Cookpad Inc., produced water-resistant cards—with recipes printed on the back—so they can be used in the kitchen.

am confident that British Chamber of Commerce in Japan (BCCJ) members are aware of what a great job the secretariat does in carrying out chamber operations.

But what about the role of the executive committee (excom)?

Democratically elected by BCCJ members through secure online voting, the role of excom to date has perhaps been a little opaque. We now plan to rectify that. Allow me to explain how excom works.

The fundamental role of the committee is to articulate BCCJ objectives and develop a strategy to achieve them. In order to do this, excom has formed task forces to address issues including BCCJ membership, events, communications and community, as well as the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games, the British Business Awards and collaboration with UK Trade & Investment Japan.

Task forces formulate recommendations that are submitted for discussion and approval at excom meetings.

The composition of task forces reflects the goals and priorities of the BCCJ. To that end, those concerning membership and the Tokyo Olympics were formed this year.

As I mentioned last month, the BCCJ provides a platform for business interaction. Excom’s objective is to improve members’ experience and the business opportunities provided to them.

Part of our strategy for doing this is to create a larger and more diverse community of active participants in events. We aim to do this by increasing membership.

Another key theme this year is the Tokyo Olympics and the Rugby World Cup 2019 (RWC).

Hosting these iconic sporting events in close succession is a once-in-a-generation opportunity for both Japan and the UK, which hosted the London Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012, and will host RWC 2015. Entrusted to the two host countries are

common responsibilities that have engendered a bilateral commitment to collaborate and share experience. With this come opportunities for businesses to share skills and support the host cities in welcoming a global audience from around the world.

The BCCJ is well-positioned to support chamber members and stakeholders who plan to be involved in the build-up to the tournaments in Japan. The years 2019 and 2020 may seem a long way off but, given the lead time for planning, we are now in a sweet spot of activity, as organising committees flesh out their capabilities and contracts are tendered. Over the coming months, therefore, excom will be arranging a number of events connected with the Olympics and RWC themes.

We are fortunate to have a dedicated excom whose members are committed to contributing their skills and experience through task forces. But the strength of the BCCJ lies with the combined capabilities and energy of our membership. ord Jack McConnell spoke on “The Future of the UK” at a luncheon hosted by the British Chamber of Commerce in Japan (BCCJ) at the Shangri-La Hotel, Tokyo, on 19 May. About 50 BCCJ members and guests attended to hear the former Scottish first minister’s views on the forthcoming referendum.

Residents of Scotland will be asked to answer the monumental question, “Should Scotland be an independent country?” at the ballot box on 18 September.

The issues raised in the debate so far, explained McConnell, are essentially all about uncertainty should Scotland vote yes. The matters under discussion include doubts over Scotland’s use of the British currency, its ability to join or re-join the European Union, taxes, pensions, security policy and nuclear weapons.

Although these are all relevant questions, he expressed concern that wider issues have yet to be addressed, and that in recent months, the debate has become simplistic and somewhat negative. He suggests the public’s disenchantment with politicians and rejection of the “centre” also seems to be driving the agenda.

“This is not a choice between Scotland and Westminster”, he said. “This is a choice between a Scotland that has a strong, devolved parliament inside

the United Kingdom, and a Scotland that has an independent parliament outside the United Kingdom”.

An exploration of the way in which the UK is governed—since the devolution of Scotland in 1999 and of Wales and Northern Ireland—should be a key component of the debate, he said.

The recent European elections also have implications for the future of the UK, according to McConnell. He believes success by extreme right-wing parties—including the UK Independence Party—across Western Europe may kick-start a debate in the UK again about the country’s membership of the European Union (EU).

This question worries Japanese firms, McConnell said. The UK is Japan’s biggest investment market in the EU and is home to about 1,300 Japanese firms that directly benefit about 140,000 people, while UK exports to Japan are believed to be valued at just under £10bn a year.

McConnell was visiting Japan to lead a roundtable discussion on the latest developments in the UK political situation at the annual Japan meeting of the UK–Japan 21st Century Group.

Participants of the group also expressed concerns about Scottish independence and any possibility the UK may leave the EU, he said.

Think-tank brings nations closer The UK–Japan 21st Century Group was set up in 1984 as the UK–Japan 2000 Group, to promote dialogue and cooperation between the two nations at the joint recommendation of Margaret Thatcher and Yasuhiro Nakasone, former prime ministers.

It is a coalition of private and public sectors, as well as civil society leaders, with a diverse membership—representing industry, finance, academia, the media and government.

The think-tank—which meets alternately in the UK and Japan— held its 31st annual conference in Hakone on 16–18 May. Director Lord Jack McConnell said the group is striving to raise the profile of the UK–Japan relationship—particularly economic aspects—which today may be undervalued by politicians and the British public.

“The impression that there are other economies that are more important to the UK than the Japanese economy is one of those that we want to try and quash”, he said.

This year’s event began with an official meeting with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and a discussion with ministers and senior officials from the Ministry of Defense. Topics presented at the conference include sustainable economic growth, global health, gender diversity in politics and business, and nuclear strategy.

More incentives and systems to increase bilateral student exchanges, as well as ways to improve the number of people studying Japanese in the UK, also were extensively discussed.

“Scots’ contributions to the world for the last 300 years have been phenomenal—we are punching way above our weight”, he said, emphasising that it was “no coincidence” this success started in the century after the union was formed.

“The UK is the most successful political union in the world, has been for 300 years and remains so today”, McConnell concluded.

London and Tokyo recognised the right to freedom and safety of navigation, as outlined in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. Abe described Japan’s “Proactive Contributor to Peace” policy to Cameron, who assured him the UK welcomes a more active role for Japan in international security efforts. The parties committed to negotiations on an Acquisition and CrossServicing Agreement, which

would provide logistic, technical and administrative support to the armed forces of both countries.

A meeting in London will be scheduled in the near future with foreign service and defence ministers, to make specific proposals on developing a framework for cooperation.

In the field of defence equipment, already an industry with strong UK–Japan ties, the governments will seek to identify further projects for joint development and production. This

will build on two of the defence pacts signed in July 2013.

Growth and prosperity The UK side encouraged Japan to continue deliberations on joining the Open Government Partnership, a platform launched in 2011 to make signatory governments more open, accountable and responsive to citizens. Japan considers this an important initiative. The nations also reinforced their commitment to promoting the establishment of rules on corporate governance.

Energy: nuclear and renewable In accordance with the Japan–UK Framework on Civil Nuclear Cooperation and the annual UK–Japan Nuclear Dialogue, the nations will work together regarding the ongoing

decommissioning efforts at the Fukushima Dai-Ichi Nuclear Power Plant. Both countries affirmed their support of nuclear energy as a crucial part of a low-carbon, affordable and secure energy mix.

Olympic collaboration A special “host-to-host” memorandum of cooperation was signed during Abe’s visit, in light of several upcoming sporting events in Japan and the UK. London agreed to share insights from its experience in planning the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, to support the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Both nations will also share best practices regarding the

planning and hosting of the Rugby World Cup, to be held in England in 2015 and Japan in 2019.

UK firms stand to benefit greatly from this exchange, particularly small and mediumsized businesses.

Games approach. The UK will continue working closely with Japan on this front, partly through the provision of globally validated assessments such as the IELTS (International English Language Testing System).

apan is the source of so many bright ideas for products and services that it seems a downright waste not to share them with the rest of the world. This is precisely what British entrepreneurs who have been exposed to Japanese concepts are doing.

From cuisine through cycles and even animal cafés, bright ideas for a business premise that we take for granted here are gradually appearing across the UK as well.

Take Lauren Pears, for example.

Inspired by a visit to a cat café on a short trip to Tokyo in 2009, the feline-loving entrepreneur has transplanted the concept to London’s East End. And the evidence, since the establishment opened in early March, suggests that she is on to a winner. Demand has been so high that Lady Dinah’s Cat Emporium is booked solid through the end of October, and the online booking system has been overwhelmed.

Work on renovating the Shoreditch property that has become Britain’s first cat-themed café began in July last year—with more than 300 people quickly submitting job applications.

The positive initial response gave 30-yearold Pears confidence that the café would catch on with the public. That sentiment was further enhanced by a hugely successful crowdfunding campaign through the Indiegogo website. More than £108,000 was raised to launch the project.

“People are excited”, Pears told BCCJ ACUMEN. “There’s a lot of positivity and expectation”.

The proprietor, who was previously a developer of video games for the Sony Playstation, came up with the idea after returning from Tokyo. She noticed how frequently people petted cats on the streets of British towns.

“We chose Shoreditch because that is roughly where three of the top four most densely populated boroughs of London meet”, she said. “We figured that small housing means no pets.

“I’m not sure where the British tradition for loving their pets springs from, but I could speculate that in rural England, cats played a vital role in households, controlling rodents around livestock food supply”, she said.

And she is confident that a business which emerged in Japan, largely in response to the lack of space in an average urban home, will work in the UK. “In London, the population is particularly transient, so people move frequently. A large proportion of city dwellers live in share-house arrangements, which makes keeping pets quite difficult. Also, many landlords don’t permit animals in their dwellings, and many dwellings are too small.

“Lastly, I think the people who really, really love animals can’t bear to keep one in their home if they know that they will be at work for long hours”, she added.

There is also evidence that petting animals is beneficial to human health. A study by the University of Hiroshima determined that looking at things that are appealing can help

“The uncomplicated affection between an animal and a human can be very soothing”.

And the affection for cats does appear to be stronger than that for man’s traditional best friend, she pointed out, as a plan by another group to open a dog-themed café in Brixton flopped after failing to attract sufficient support.

The cat café charges £5 for a two-hour visit.

It serves hot drinks and light snacks, including gluten-free, nut-free and vegan options. The 10 feline residents are abandoned cats and kittens that have been rescued.

“It is important to us to be a voice speaking out in favour of adoption”, Pears said. “It’s a core value of the business that we support animal rescue and animal welfare causes”.

“I admire the Japanese commitment to doing a job well”, she said. “When I visited, I never noticed a single person who did not appear to derive enjoyment from fulfilling their role, no matter how humble [it] may have been.

“If there’s another element of Japanese society I would like to incorporate into the Cat Emporium, it would be to demonstrate to my customers the kindness and solicitude that I experienced in Japan as a visitor”, she said.

Macha for the masses

James Shillcock got his taste for one of Japan’s favourite beverages when he worked in a specialist teashop in London. The 26-year-old entrepreneur has blended macha tea with a range of equally traditional British flavours, including elderflower, pear, lime, honey and rhubarb. The brand is sold as Vivid Drinks.

“The reception when we first launched the range was just incredible, but I’m even more excited now that we’re coming into our first summer season”, Shillcock told BCCJ ACUMEN. “The rate of sales has been phenomenal— particularly because we have been working with a tiny budget and with virtually no promotion”.

Vivid Drinks’ products, which are made in Somerset with macha powder imported from southern Japan, are finding a firm following in Britain. The range is distributed in more than 200 shops across the UK, primarily independent health food outlets such as Planet Organic, as well as Waitrose supermarkets.

Green tea is winning over an international audience in part because of its reputation as a superfood that promotes energy—both physical and mental, thanks to its elevated levels of the amino-acid L-theanine. It also has more antioxidants than any other type of tea.

“What L-theanine does is release caffeine over a slightly longer period of time, which is why you get a sustained boost rather than the highs and lows that you can get with, say, coffee”, he said. “And that’s something we really want to focus on with our branding”.

“We then went on a mission to find out more about them and approached several large Japanese manufacturers, but found that they had no interest in exporting their products to the UK. “Determined to follow through with the idea, we began to research other sources of mamachari and found that there was a ready supply of used bikes which were sourced from local authorities,” he added. “All the bikes that are left attached to railings and at stations are confiscated, and end up at auction if the owners do not come to claim them”.

Fisher met with potential suppliers on a business trip to Japan at the end of 2012 and negotiated to buy up hundreds of abandoned bikes and ship them to the UK. All the bikes are then reconditioned and sold on from the shop.

Fisher chose to base his new business in East London after identifying a gap in the market for sturdy, reliable and practical bikes priced between £100 and £350.

“There are many shops and companies in East London selling cheap bikes, but most are

“People are often surprised that the bikes are Japanese”, he added. “The stereotypical view of Japan is that everything is super high-tech and modern. To learn that the Japanese have a tendency towards classic styling and ‘mid-tech’ functionality is surprising for most people who have not been to Japan”.

The average mamachari rider in London is

“Our Dreamy Bows customers are typically 16 to 25 years old and almost solely female”, said Mackney, who previously created the parallel Tofu Cute website to market Japanese sweets.

“I believe these products appeal to British consumers because they are so hard to find in the UK”, she told BCCJ ACUMEN. “Most people with an interest in Japanese culture who have attempted to purchase products directly from Japan would have experienced the difficulties involved with this—high shipping costs, customs charges and so on.

The care and attention to detail lavished on products’ packaging and design make them instantly appealing to consumers who have never seen anything similar before.

“Online sales have been increasing and we are on the cusp of opening up our first physical store, in our hometown of Portsmouth”, Mackney said.

Dreamy Bows customers are typically 16 to 25 years old.

“We also intend to increase our brand portfolio and product range for both companies”, she added. “Importing in increasingly higher quantities allows us to increase our margins and, therefore, be able to offer a wider range of products at wholesale prices”.

“The way that packaging is designed in Japan is unique in the world”, Fulton said. “A lot of thought goes into the design process, with a focus on colour and character. In the West, the focus is more on brands and making sure that the name of the product is very clear. Japanese products have a very high focus on detail, which is important”.

He is convinced that Japanese pop culture has huge potential among consumers in Europe.

“Quite a few people I know have moved to Japan to start a new life for themselves and I think there is a growing desire to visit Japan, especially within the 16–25 age group.

“There are a lot more television programmes that feature aspects of Japanese life and more Japanese restaurants opening in the UK. I also think that the increase of social networking across the world means that pop culture that is interesting and different to us gets more coverage than ever before”, he said.

Washoku at home It’s not just Brits who have recognised the virtues and values of Japanese culture back in the UK. Three Japanese businessmen have teamed up to launch London’s first Japanese culinary education venue.

The Sozai Cooking School opened in February of last year, close to Liverpool Street Station and the financial centre of the city.

“We all felt that the time had come to meet the desire of office workers to learn how to cook in the Japanese way”, said Tetsuro Hama, who opened one of Britain’s first Japanese restaurants, named So, in 1973.

“We realised that there are no cooking schools for Japanese food in London, but we really believed that this could become popular among businesspeople in the city”, Hama said.

He launched the concept with Akitoshi Handa, who has lived in London since 1985 and owns a PR and advertising agency close to Liverpool Street, and Takeru Kurihara, a selfconfessed food fanatic, who takes on the day-today running of the school.

“We offer a variety of classes, most of them fairly straightforward meals that are easy to learn, even for people who have never cooked before”, Hama told BCCJ ACUMEN.

The sushi-making class is a favourite among students.

“People can pick and choose the areas they are interested in and we have found that demand is increasing constantly, especially for corporate team-building events”, he added.

Sadly, most Brits’ knowledge of Japanese cuisine is limited to sushi, but Hama, Kurihara and Handa are opening UK residents’ eyes to all the wondrous possibilities that exist in the Japanese kitchen.

“Interest in other dishes is increasing, especially when someone comes along to one of our classes and realises that there is a huge variety of dishes to learn about”, Hama said.

“We all felt that the time had come to meet the desire of office workers to learn how to cook in the Japanese way”.

Demand is so high at Hama’s So Restaurant that the trio behind the project is looking for an additional venue. Bespoke cookery events for private and corporate clients are also booming.

“Japanese cuisine is understood to be very healthy and part of a good diet, but we have also been helped by the huge increase in Japanese restaurants. Washoku joining the United Nations’ Intangible Cultural Heritage list also helps”, Hama said.

More recently, ramen is beginning to find its feet in the UK market, and celebrity chefs are coming out in support of Japanese cuisine.

“We held a washoku event at the Japanese embassy in February and a number of famous chefs came over from Japan, along with Heston Blumenthal [of the Michelin-starred Fat Duck restaurant]”, said Hama. “He talked a lot about his passion for Japanese food. We find that a lot of Michelin-starred chefs are very keen to use traditional Japanese ingredients, such as yuzu and miso”.

he recent UK budget has been described by the Institute of Directors as “the most radical reform to pensions in decades”. Given the

With a welfare budget of some £200bn and a planned £12bn in spending cuts this year, the UK needs to find a staggering £120bn to balance the books.

Remember, it is better to have too much rather than too little money in retirement. Don’t underestimate the amount of money you will need nor the likely fact you will live into a healthy old age. It is vital you be aware of changes in legislation that affect how you plan your future replacement income.

Finally, there are more taxefficient and less restrictive ways of planning for your retirement in addition to any UK pension. These options should be explored to establish whether you are on track to meet your goals, and whether you are invested through the very best company structure to fulfil your needs.

hen David Keech joined the musical instrument division of Yamaha Corporation in 2003, he became the first non-Japanese designer to work for the firm. Yamaha was beginning to

“Having developed an in-depth knowledge of Japanese design and business culture, as well as a passion for the culture of Japan itself, it was clear to me that supplying British design to Japanese companies would be the unique strength of the business”, Keech said.

Critical to achieving that, he said, are patience and diligence, along with the ability to build strong, long-term relationships. To do that, Keech needs to provide a high-quality service while remaining mindful of Japanese business culture.

“I wouldn’t say it was easy, because the ‘long game’ associated with doing business in Japan can be, in a sense, contradictory to the needs of

Based in Great Portland Street in central London, Keech employs several designers, one of them Japanese, and is able to create tailored design teams from a wide array of backgrounds to tackle various types of projects.

Whether they are building a couple’s dream home, or renovating company offices or retail outlets, the same basic challenge continually arises: how do you maximise the use of limited space? You open it up, he said.

For frontoffice, there are no dead ends, such as a kitchen that is accessed via one route only or dormant hallways used solely to access other rooms. “Being able to walk around is essential; it gives you choices”, Klinkers said.

Maximising space is only part of the challenge. You also want to build flexibility into the design, the architect said, as both families and firms are liable to change. A family may welcome a new member or see one fly the nest; a company may expand or shrink.

Such was the case when frontoffice created its own workspace. The two-storey building was originally a postwar construction with rooms to rent on the second floor and a cafe below. Requiring more space and flexibility, frontoffice did away with all rooms by removing interior walls and hiding a stairwell that ran down the building’s middle. The result: an open-plan office awash in natural light and space for current and future use. Frontoffice calls it a hacked space.

Poll shows firms confident about next 12 months by kathryn wortley

espondents to the recent Foreign Chambers in Japan Business Confidence Survey have expressed optimism regarding the state of the Japanese economy. The poll, conducted between 15 and 25 April, received 320 replies—a 20% increase over the previous survey—from members of 17 foreign chambers of commerce and business organisations.

The survey, the 25th since the initiative began in 2002, is seen as an important barometer of foreign business in Japan.

On an index using a scale of +2 (indicating strong improvement) to -2 (indicating strong decline), the replies show that firms generally expect the economy to grow over the coming six months (+0.46). This is a slight drop from the previous

survey, conducted last October (+0.89). Some 58% of respondents expect strong improvement, while 16% see some decline.

Pollees indicated that, over the previous six months, there had been an improvement in sales, which are now at their highest level since the spring 2006 survey.

Respondents’ sales forecasts for the coming six months are at +0.79,

indicating less optimism than in October (+0.87). That said, higher profitability is expected.

75% of their North American counterparts.

Concerning the weakened yen’s influence on businesses, 61% of respondents reported experiencing some, or a strong, negative impact, while 26% said there had been no impact.

ver wondered how it would feel to get in a boxing ring in front of over 400 screaming fans? On 23 May in the Grand Hyatt Tokyo ballroom, 16 brave souls—five of them British—did more than wonder as they fought in the “Tony Evans and deVere Group Executive Fight Night IV: Fists of Fury” event.

Since 2012, Ginja Ninja Promotions—Brit Eddie “Nifty Ninja” Nixon and Aussies Dave “Naughty Ninja” Thomas and Nathan “Nimble Ninja” Schmid— have brought four high-octane

executive fight nights to Tokyo.

The charity events have given 62 executives the chance to transform their bodies with gruelling training at Moto-Azabu’s Club 360.

Those who are successful in the try-outs are put through an intensive 12-week programme administered by former professional fighters-turnedcoaches Ona Davaa and Jan Kaszuba. “It’s certainly not for everyone”, said Schmid, owner and personal trainer at Club 360. “But our executive fighters go through a

journey that leaves them stronger mentally and physically”.

So far, the black-tie Vegas-style events have raised over ¥23mn for charities. Of the five Brits who competed in the latest contest, four of them emerged victorious: Andrew “Dragonbawl-Z” McKinley, Elizabeth “Hot Hands” Taylor, “Savage” Sam Yusef and Clark “Tornado” Johnson. Their efforts, along with those of other participants, have helped Shine On! Kids in their work to assist children battling cancer and other serious illnesses.

EFN IV was the most successful to date. Fighter of the night: Elizabeth “Hot Hands” Taylor

At each Executive Fight Night (EFN), an overall winner of the evening is chosen by coaches and organisers. Elizabeth Taylor, a former inflight service manager with Virgin Atlantic, took the prize in the May event.

Taylor is a mother of three young boys; the wife of Nick Taylor, Virgin Atlantic country manager Japan; and a karate black belt.

Why did you try out for the EFN? Taylor: I did it for charity and for myself, to get fit. I’ve always been a runner, and I competed in a couple of marathons before having children. I love having goals and following a programme. This keeps me motivated.

Boxing was totally new for me.

Training was the highlight—in a way being in the ring was like a performance, to see how much you learned in training. The experience brought back the fighting skills inside me.

How did your family react?

[My husband] Nick kept me motivated. We moved here about a year ago, and ever since attending our first EFN he had encouraged me to take part. The highlight of

the night was my dad coming [from the UK] to watch. I did a dance out to the ring and blew him a kiss on the way.

What was a typical day like during the 12-week training?

We had to go to Club 360 twice a week, but I personally didn’t think that was enough, since I was new to boxing, so I had two extra sessions with Jan [Kaszuba] each week. I also ran five days a week. I found that running at 5am worked best for me, to still get my kids ready for their day.

I chose the evening training sessions, and then Saturdays we [EFN participants] would all meet at the Imperial Palace to do two laps, 5km each, plus some relevant pad work and shadow boxing exercises.

Tell me about some of your challenges.

Throughout the training, people go through lots of ups and downs, and there is a great psychological aspect to it. I lost my confidence at the beginning because I was new to this. In the second round of my match against [my opponent] Maya, I felt rising pressure when she landed a few great punches.

[My ring coach] Ona-san always psyched me up though, and I still laugh when I think about his words: “I will tell you again Liz, you are heavier than her, you have more stamina and you hit harder”. Maya is 11 years younger than me and had better technique. I honestly believe that the only reason I was chosen overall champion is because it was such a great fight and we both did our absolute best.

How did you balance your other responsibilities with training?

It was definitely a challenge not seeing my husband very often and having the poor kids rotate through lots of babysitters! I didn’t miss one class, though. I never got to do boxing class on Fridays, which I wanted to do, because that’s movie night with my boys. They always come first. I think mums are naturally good at juggling things.

How did the experience change you, physically and otherwise?

Boxing is a great all-around sport and keeps you really fit. I’ve got muscles in my arms now and even a six-pack! This also showed me that, when I put my mind to it, I can do anything. I always give 110% and commit fully to any activity.

recently treated a young executive who was referred to me with severe neck pain and muscle spasms. He felt the issue was related to his posture and long

Clinically, his neck movement, joints and spinal muscles were tight and restricted. A poor workstation set-up resulted in unnecessary strain in his upper neck. We altered his desk and monitor height, and after a couple of visits the patient reported his neck pain resolved—better still, his regular headaches had ceased completely.

I was surprised, as he had not mentioned headaches at our initial session, having considered them unrelated to his stiff neck.

My client had never sought treatment for his distractingly painful headaches, believing them to be stress-induced and unrelated to his other complaints. He was not aware that a combination of hands-on treatment, posture changes and exercise could rid him of this long-term affliction.

A large proportion of the community suffers from headaches of various types. The UK-based International Headache Society lists over 40 different types of headache, and a great deal of research is being done to understand the pathophysiology, or functional changes, behind each disorder.

A multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of cervicogenic headaches works best.

Physiotherapy often includes massage, joint mobilisation, ergonomic correction and selfmaintenance through exercises and postural education. A doctor may prescribe medication and further testing, or refer patients to a specialist.

If you suffer from headaches, seek professional help. It is vital to distinguish between neckrelated headaches and other headache disorders. In migraine or tension-type headaches, there are often coexisting musculoskeletal symptoms. Addressing these through hands-on treatment, exercise and postural correction may have an impact on the frequency or severity of attacks as an adjunct to pharmacological management.

Head pain can be worrying.

Anyone suffering from recurrent, severe or persistent head pain should consult their doctor to determine if further investigation into the cause of their headaches is required.

Sometimes pain in the head can be directly referred from the neck.

With cervicogenic (neckrelated) headaches, the source of pain is the cervical spine, muscles or soft tissues of the neck, but the sensation is felt in the head.

The pain is often episodic and unilateral, affecting the forehead, temple or eye area.

The neural networks from the cervical spine and head cross over in the upper spinal cord.

Here, incoming and outgoing neural pathways converge with messages descending from the brain and central nervous system at what could be described as a sensory power terminal: the trigeminocervical nucleus.

The nucleus is the source of the trigeminal nerve, a cranial nerve that supplies the face, eye, head

and internal skull, and the sinuses.

This convergence means problems originating in the neck can cause pain in the head.

Occasionally, pain can be directly referred from the neck to the area at the back of the head.

This is because the spinal nerves from the upper three levels of the cervical spine also supply the posterior skull.

As many headache types have common symptoms, a doctor or physiotherapist relies on a patient’s detailed account of their condition to help classify the type of headache they are suffering. A careful physical examination is performed to assess the motion of the neck, changes in soft tissues and any joint stiffness.

s a teenager growing up in Gunma Prefecture in the 1970s, Tomoyasu Hotei was inspired by the bright lights of London and the British music scene.

“Both London and New York have always been especially inspiring for me”, Hotei told BCCJ ACUMEN. “I’m incredibly grateful for a career of more than 30 years in Japan, but at the same time I cannot give up my dream of expanding my work globally”.

A fixture on any of his set lists is “Battle Without Honour or Humanity”. This number is Hotei’s best-known work, and was chosen by Quentin Tarantino as the theme song for the hit cult film Kill Bill.

“It really amazes me how I can travel anywhere in the world, and people know this

song”, Hotei said. “It has been used in lots of TV commercials and programmes, in video games, at events, and also as the opening music for football games at UK stadiums.

“Unfortunately, I don’t think many people actually realise this is my original song”, he said. “Given that it’s so recognisable, I think it’s my best weapon for introducing myself as a guitarist and composer to new audiences around the world”. The guitar legend went on tour last autumn, with gigs including Hotei’s first performance in New York City.

“The show at London’s O2 [Shepherd’s Bush Empire] last November had a really fantastic visual aspect”, he said. “We used a special technique to project images onto a series of screens, to produce a modern and

Hotei’s previous collaborators have ranged from David Bowie to Jesus Jones. Composer Michael Kamen even invited Hotei to play at the closing ceremony for the 1996 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Atlanta.

Shortly after the earthquake and tsunami struck north-eastern Japan in March 2011, he performed at a charity concert attended by 100,000 people.

“I really felt blessed to be a part of that and to be together with so many people”, he said.

Since completing his autumn tour, Hotei has been back in the studio working on his new album. He will be playing festival dates this summer, including England’s Cornbury Festival on 6 July and Switzerland’s Montreux Jazz Festival on 11 July. www.hotei.com

o this day, the Beatles retain iconic status as British rockers. For many countries, including Japan, the band was among the first major UK music exports, who paved the Abbey Road to the currently held

vision of Britain as a global hub for music. They led the British Invasion of the 1960s that kicked off lasting collaboration between UK and US rock and pop musicians of the era.

The Beatles came to Japan in 1966, the same year hit tunes such as “Penny Lane”, “Paperback Writer” and “Strawberry Fields Forever” were recorded. This was also the year the foursome became associated with their signature “mop-top” hairstyle, a point that was not lost upon Japanese journalists posing questions at a press conference during the visit.

Tokyo was the first stop for the band’s Asia tour that year. Several performances were scheduled at Nippon Budokan Hall, a fact that enraged many right-wing nationalists who felt the venue was reserved for performances of traditional Japanese culture.

For their protection, the group was confined to their room at the Tokyo Hilton for the entire duration of their stay. They had five successful shows, although band members reportedly described fans as very “clinical” and calm, subdued by policemen at the end of each row.

The authorities were wary of violence among audience members after having received written threats from anonymous sources.

These groups are very visible and powerful. Each has its own lobbyists and harnesses various media tools to achieve its goals.

During recent years’ debates in Britain on whether to make samesex marriages legal, the country faced strong opposition from various quarters. This included opponents from the Church of England, which believes marriage is only possible between a man and a woman.

Representatives from Stonewall and other organisations argued on TV and radio that the ability to marry was a basic human right for all couples, regardless of gender. Debates raged both inside and outside Parliament. The provisions of the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act came into force in March 2014, and the first gay unions were celebrated across the country.

When I came to London in 2002, I was shocked that poverty is still a political issue in a developed country such as this. I’ve since come to perceive that poverty is relative. Not having access to the Internet or higher education due to a lack of money can drastically reduce your chances for success in life.

The public activities of NGOs and charitable organisations don’t necessarily solve the problems against which they struggle. Although the Stop the War coalition and the anti-war movement led several million people in the UK to protest in the streets before the 2003 invasion of Iraq, it did not stop the government from pursuing military deployment.

Still, I believe that NGOs play a vital role in society. They fight for those who can’t, and make the voices of the populace heard. As an individual you may be but a small component of society, but, if you cry out, there will be some person or organisation out there that is ready and willing to help.

I truly believed, as most of my colleagues did, the myth of everyone in Japan belonging to the middle class.

I’ve come to notice the important role that NGOs play in society since moving to the UK. Before, I tended to believe that elected officials would work for my benefit and that of other citizens; therefore I could just trust them with decision-making.

I also didn’t really notice the poor people or sexual minorities who might benefit from my support of policy changes.

I read occasional reports about such classes of people,

with special pages dedicated to advertising Christmas presents for your loved ones.

Among a heap of shopping recommendations, a red pamphlet called “Christmas menu” caught my attention. It was made by the charity Crisis, and was not among the typically well-designed restaurant menus I was accustomed to receiving.

Regional territorial disputes beg questions on constitution by ian de stains obe

A

n advisory body on security recently issued a report to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. Some of the recommendations therein are

They are likely to become still more controversial, since central to those recommendations is nothing short of a reinterpretation of Japan’s constitution—something that is opposed by some 51.3% of the public according to a recent Kyodo News poll.

Specifically, the panel focuses on Article 9, which critics say was forced on Japan by the Allied Occupiers at the end of the Pacific War. It states, “The Japanese people forever renounce war as a sovereign right of the nation and the threat or use of force as a means of settling international disputes”.

Abe’s wish to reinterpret this article does not necessarily mean the administration is intent on waging war. Indeed, the panel members have gone to great lengths to stress this is not the case.

Their concern, they say, is that Article 9 also denies Japan the right to collective defence.

This right of a country to go to the defence of an ally under attack is recognised under international law (Charter of the United Nations, Article 51).

Responses to the same Kyodo poll mentioned above suggest that just under 50% of Japanese would

what Pyongyang is considering next in its missile programme. Though much in North Korea remains shrouded in secrecy, it is already clear that the regime has the capacity to launch missiles that can overfly the Japanese archipelago.

Washington will be watching all this very carefully, aware that any conflict in the region among these nations will almost certainly result in the involvement of US forces. It is against this background that Abe and his supporters are pressing for the controversial changes. Japan, they argue, cannot simply stand by and remain helpless in the event of a regional conflict; it must be able to assist its allies under the terms of the United Nations charter.

All of this is very disconcerting for Japan’s neighbours, who still remember the atrocities committed against them, and for which they claim the Japanese have never sufficiently atoned, despite a number of governmentlevel apologies.

Recent arguments over the socalled “comfort women” and Abe’s insistence on visiting Yasukuni Shrine (where Japan’s war dead— including a number of convicted war criminals—are enshrined) have only added to the rising level of concern in the region.

Supporters of the move to reinterpret the constitution say the time is right for a revision.

Currently, the Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security between the United States and Japan obliges US forces to come to the defence of Japan. However, the existing ban on collective defence means that Japanese forces are effectively prevented from assisting the US, unless the Japanese archipelago itself were to come under attack.

Opponents say this is too restrictive an interpretation and that an attack, say, on a US naval vessel in Japanese waters, would entitle the Japan Maritime SelfDefense Force to engage. Both arguments remain untested.

Not surprisingly, Japan’s current stance is cause for concern to the country’s neighbours in the region, principally China and South Korea. Both countries are engaged in territorial disputes with Japan.

In the case of South Korea, the dispute centres on the Liancourt Rocks (known to the Japanese as Takeshima and to the Koreans as Dokdo) and on an island known to the Japanese as Tsushima and to the Koreans as Daemado.

Worryingly, the dispute with China over islands in the East China Sea—known as the Senkaku isles in Japan and Diaoyu in China—has captured international headlines of late. This is particularly concerning as China has been seen to flex its military

According to the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Japan boasts some 5,600 museums.

The major national institutions in such places as Tokyo, Kyoto, Nara and Kyushu are fairly well known to non-Japanese with an interest in the country’s history and culture. Information on these venues is largely accessible through the Internet and various

Sophie Richard has visited many of these sites and has shared her experiences in a beautifully produced book that deserves a place on the shelves of anyone who claims to know anything about Japanese culture. It is evident that for her, this is a work of love.

Her writing is clear, informed and to the point, and the chapters are wonderfully illustrated. The book is cleverly broken down

But there are many other museums—most of them private— that are far less easy to locate. Yet they are in their own right true gems, hosting priceless collections, some of which are idiosyncratic.

Given the enormity of events in north-eastern Japan on 11 March 2011, it is no surprise that there has been a stream of accounts about the triple disaster.

The emotionally charged, not necessarily well-informed concerns about radiation aside, the devastating post-quake tsunami has attracted most attention.

The most dramatic images transmitted around the world straight after the disaster portray devastation of Biblical proportions. It was one thing to watch; for those caught up in it, the experience was altogether more terrifying.

Here we have a collection of 100 reflections on the event.

Originally a series of interviews (in Japanese) that appeared in the daily newspaper The Ishinomaki Kahoku, the volume is the work of a number of volunteer translators.

The collection was inspired by the commitment of Dr Hitomi Nakanishi, of the University of Canberra. The 100 accounts by people who survived the tsunami are dramatic and frightening.

Ultimately, though, they are heartwarming testaments to human beings’ capacity to overcome the most daunting of challenges.

The book is replete with illustrations. Some have become iconic and instantly recognisable as symbols of the disaster.
