D Greetings From The

ecades ago, when I joined this company, I was taught invaluable lessons by my mentor Richard Foard, then owner of Blue Dot. The company, founded in the 1960s by the late Harold B. VanHoy Sr., was built upon a sturdy and solid foundation, bolstered by a philosophy and set of values that are practiced today by everyone at Blue Dot: professionalism and integrity and a commitment to family and community that is unwavering.

GENERAL MANAGER Jeff Stagnoli

Blue Dot technicians and staff are dedicated to doing the best possible job every day. Our devoted, highly skilled and certified professionals’ reputation for excellence is only matched by their loyalty to you, our customer. And if for some reason you are not happy, we will make it right every time. That’s my professional and personal guarantee to you. Having grown up in this business where family and community values are at the very core of the business, I can assure you that all our employees and all of our customers are treated with respect and dignity; the former are like family and the latter are our neighbors. And we are committed to the greater community by not only doing business locally whenever possible, like purchasing our company shirts from a local manufacturer rather than buying online; while purchasing online may be less expensive, that’s not our way: we are committed to helping support our local economy by supporting local businesses. We believe that policy is good community stewardship and it’s our promise to support local business whenever possible. Yes, we are a business and want to make a profit, but we believe that making our customers happy is our number one goal. People work very hard for their money and I want every customer to feel like their hard-earned money is well spent with us. Additionally, we are dedicated to our community through our support of what we believe are important causes: the D.O. Believe Foundation and the Heather L. Hurd Foundation. Please read more about these important efforts in this, our first Cool Comfort magazine.

"Having grown up in this business where family and community values are at the very core of the business, I can assure you that all our employees and all of our customers are treated with respect and dignity; the former are like family and the latter are our neighbors."

Jeff Stagnoli General Manager, Blue Dot Services

T

alk about humble and modest beginnings. The history of the now-booming Blue Dot Heating and Air Conditioning of Maryland began in a chicken coop.

Blue Dot general manager Jeff Stagnoli, who joined the company more than 24 years ago, says that in 1967, what was then called Ridge Heating and Air Conditioning was founded by Harold B. VanHoy Sr., who, with an early partner, structured the fledgling business, “literally in a chicken coop, an old abandoned chicken house.” They even used an old bread delivery truck as their first service vehicle talk about necessity being the mother of invention.

It wasn’t long before the business flew that coop and relocated in the very early 1970s and took flight. At about that time, VanHoy, who Stagnoli says was a “big motorcycle racing guy,” met a young motorcycle mechanic named Richard Foard. VanHoy took Foard under his wing, taught him the business and in the late 1970s, sold the business to Foard, who was also a motorcycle racing enthusiast. Stagnoli says Foard was devoted to the business. “He took the company and he really grew it,” Stagnoli says. “It was his lifelong passion.” In 1998, Foard sold the business, decades after purchasing it, to national company Blue Dot. Stagnoli says his mentor Foard “stayed on board until about 10 years ago.” In 2004, 8

“We’ve grown, but even with this kind of growth, we still very much retain the family feel. We take care of each other. We take care of our community.” the company was purchased back from Blue Dot, although the name remained the same; people had come to know the brand very well, Stagnoli says. The company has seen much iteration over the years. Specialty work including metal work, building metal domes and cupolas for Baltimore architecture and at one point plumbing and commercial work, but these days, Blue Dot is focused on residential heating and cooling only, to the tune of some 40,000 homes annually. “We have grown a lot,” Stagnoli says. “When I first started, we were considered one of the largest in the state and among the top 10 businesses in the county. Then, we may have had 20 trucks on the road. At this point, we have 90 vehicles on the road. So that’s a pretty reasonable amount of growth.” Stagnoli says that while the company spends money on TV and radio advertising, “When it comes down to it, the best customer is someone that was recommended–word of mouth advertising.” “We’ve grown, but even with this kind of growth, we still very much retain the family feel. We take care of each other. We take care of our community.” Stagnoli says the company philosophy has always been the same–family values and community first. “I grew up in this business and I have witnessed the importance of the values Richard taught me,” he says, offering an example of community-first thinking: “We could buy our company shirts online for a couple dollars less per shirt, but we buy local to feed the local economy. We believe that’s really important. In this day and age you do see people looking for the biggest bargain out there. I don’t think that’s the smartest thing.” Stagnoli says treating people like family, fairly and honestly, is a doctrine practiced inside the company every day. And is very much a part of their customer service tenet.

“We’re never going to be the cheapest guy out there, but I want people to have the peace of mind that if things don’t go the way they’ve expected it to, we are going to make it right.”

“We’ll always do our best to do the right thing. We’re not perfect but when it comes to owning up to it, fixing what needs to be fixed, I guarantee 1-800-BLUE-DOT I COOL COMFORT

we do a better job than most. It’s that important to us,” he says. “We’re never going to be the cheapest guy out there, but I want people to have the peace of mind that if things don’t go the way they’ve expected it to, we are going to make it right.”

All in the Family

At the end of the day, Stagnoli says, while he runs a business that’s “here to make a profit,” he believes there’s a lot more at stake.

N

“There’s a way to do that and still be a good steward to the community and take care of customers and make people happy. I want to make people feel like the hard earned money that they bring in for their families, that if they spend it with us, that it was a smart decision and money well spent.”

At Blue Dot

icole Spagna worked at Blue Dot for nearly 15 years, her most recent post as call center manager. She was very much a part of the Blue Dot family. When she’d work on Saturdays, she would sometimes bring her son Dominic to work. As company general manager Jeff Stagnoli says, “We’re a family here–everybody knows everybody including their children and spouses.” So having the preschooler around on occasion was not uncommon– the boy was a delight and he was loved. So when fiveyear-old Dominic was diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumor, the company was “there for us 100 percent,” Nicole says. “The company did everything it could to be supportive but also fair to the entire company,” she says. “While Dominic was sick, I took some leave and they held my job. When I was back and forth, they gave me flex time so I could be with my son during radiation. And when the cancer reared its ugly head again, they were absolutely there for me.” After Dominic passed away, Jeff Stagnoli says, the company’s human resources and marketing managers helped Nicole organize the first D.O. Believe 5/10K Run (please see full story on page 28). Five years later, Nicole and Jeff, who had been longtime friends and colleagues, began running together. In May of 2015, they married. Well before then, Russell and Kim Hurd, whose daughter was killed by a texting tractor trailer driver (please see full story on page 16) had met Gabrielle Amig, Blue Dot human resources manager at a local restaurant.

“We’ll always do our best to do the right thing. We’re not perfect but when it comes to owning up to it, fixing what needs to be fixed, I guarantee we do a better job than most." 10

COOL COMFORT I BLUEDOTMD.COM

“We met before Heather was killed and before Dominic’s cancer was diagnosed,” Russell Hurd says. “Since, both of us, both our families have suffered tremendous loss. People come into your lives for a reason. We’ve helped each other with our loss.” Russell, Jeff and Nicole all agree that the bond formed between them is a lasting one; united in their grief but also in their dedication to make sure no other child is taken from their loved ones, be it at the hands of a distracted driver or the horror of a childhood cancer.

ccording to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the quality of indoor air can be 2 to 5 times (and even up to 100 times) more polluted than the worst outside air[1], which is why they’ve ranked indoor air pollution among the top five environmental dangers[2].

Air Scrubber:

Poor air quality can cause a host of health problems, such as coughing, sneezing, eye irritation/itching, fatigue, dizziness, headaches and migraines, as well as congestion in the sinuses and chest. It can also exacerbate allergies and preexisting respiratory conditions, including dyspnea (difficult or painful breathing), rhinitis (inflammation of the nose and/or runny nose), epistaxis (nose bleeds), pharyngitis (sore throat), lung disease, and asthma or worsening asthma[3]. Most, if not all, of these issues can be controlled or even eliminated by significantly improving the quality of the air in your home. Don’t assume it’s fine because it very well may not be. Ignoring this puts not only your health at risk, but the risk of your entire family, including pets.

Breathe The Cleanest Air Ever

So what can you do to improve your indoor air quality? Most people have some sort of air purifier, whether it’s part of your air duct system or portable, that uses a filter (usually multiple ones), electrical attraction, oxidation, or a combination of these. Air purifiers using these technologies, however, often leave much to be desired when it comes to actually improving your air quality. Enter the Air Scrubber Plus®, a seamless, fully integrated 24/7 home air purification system. It makes cleaning surfaces, mopping up offending odors, and reducing harmful airborne contaminants as simple as turning 12

on your furnace, fan, or air conditioning system. The Air Scrubber Plus® also freshens, purifying the air in your home while reducing strong odors such as those from cigarette smoke, bacteria, pets, and cooking by naturally absorbing the particles that keep those odors lingering. This allows you to spray and scrub surfaces far less, and odors won’t simply be disguised with toxic chemicals— they’ll be eradicated [4]. Additionally, the Air Scrubber Plus® purifies your air. Unlike air filters that are passive, Air Scrubber Plus® actively treats the air by continually sending out ActivePure™ scrubbers throughout your home to greatly reduce chemicals, dangerous contaminants, mold, odors, and pollutants in the air. The peer reviewed ActivePure™ technology was derived from an air purifying system designed by NASA for the International Space Station. It’s 50 times more powerful than the average HVAC filtration system and can reduce up to 99.9% of the harmful contaminants throughout your home. The way it works is through specialized germicidal UV light waves along with a proprietary catalytic process that creates enviroscrubbing molecules of oxygen and hydrogen, just like in nature. The key components of the Air Scrubber Plus® are the honeycomb surface and UV light. The surface, which is coated with a titanium oxide and a proprietary formulation of reactive metals, creates a catalytic reaction that generates charged clusters of hydrogen and oxygen.

CLEANS FRESHENS PURIFIES

The Air Scrubber Plus® will improve your environment, and therefore your overall health. Many of the health issues mentioned earlier will resolve, as the Air Scrubber Plus™ reduces harmful airborne toxins. It reduces black mold by up to 99.9%, MSRA Superbug by 99.8%, Avian Flu by 99%, Staph and Strep by 98.5%, and E. Coli by 98.1%. Tom Lozano, Executive Director at Air Scrubber Plus®, has seen extraordinary results over the company’s eight years. “Every time we do a test at a school or a business where they keep track of attendance, we see a significant drop in absences due to sickness, up to 80 to 90 percent,” he says. Air Scrubber Plus® has done two major studies, both peer reviewed, and they’ve corroborated what Lozano claims. What’s more, the Air Scrubber Plus® extends the life of your existing heating and air conditioning system by trapping dirt, dust, and other debris before it enters through the filter, which can damage the coils and blower that keep your system running effectively. A protected HVAC system can last up to 15 years or more at peak efficiency. This will save you money on your utility bills and reduce the need for expensive service calls. An unprotected system will become dirty, causing it to break down in as little as five years [5]. A professional heating and cooling technician can easily install the Air Scrubber Plus®. A standard unit covers up to 3,000 square feet when operating and begins working at once. The unit is not visible inside your home—a small 4” square cut is made into your existing duct work and the unit is mounted directly above your HVAC’s air handler. Once that is done, you’re on the way to breathing the cleanest, freshest air of your life. Chris B. performed annual preventive maintenance on our gas furnace today. He was on time, identified himself in a friendly manner, and got right to work. Chris identified a small item that needed attention cleaning a flame sensor - and took care of it quickly. He also cleaned the drain line for our air conditioner condensate pan and asked about replacing the air filter media (I had replaced it not too long ago, so it was OK). Chris worked efficiently and finished up in about half an hour. I enjoyed talking with him and would be happy to have him work on our system again.

BUZZ Lost heat on a cold, rainy February day. We have a maintenance contract with Blue Dot. Always have had great service in many years with them. They were out within 2 hours. Wet switch had tripped and repaired immediately. Tech was great.

The team was on schedule and completed the installation of the new heat pump and removal of the old heat pump in a timely and professional manner. Jorge was the team lead and provided clear information on the operation of the system. Jorge and the team was diligent in running all the necessary cycles prior to departure. Excellent service and recommend the team highly.

Tony was very professional, punctual, and came into my home without dragging in the mud. He was very helpful and informative with all my questions and concerns. Would highly recommend.

We have been long-time customers of Blue Dot and are very satisfied with their service. Today I had a great service tech, John, who provided great service, feedback, and recommendations. This company is easy to work with and we appreciate techs like John.

14

COOL COMFORT I BLUEDOTMD.COM

The Technician was Friendly, Courteous and Professional. He knows his stuff and was very thorough in checking the A/C system. I have been with Blue Dot for many years and would recommend them highly for Heating and Air Conditioning Service and Installation.

When the Technicians arrived they were professional and ready to work in spite of the weather. Jorge was very knowledgeable and walked me through step by step of the installation. He was more than accommodating in sharing how the unit was to perform which I thought would be called going the extra mile. The install went very well without issues which is rare and for that I was very pleased. Kyle assisted as well without error as he worked on the outside without a complaint or issues. I would recommend the both of them any time.

During the worst snow storm Blue Dot sent out first a technician who discovered my old a/c heat pump had finally stopped working, he than got my emergency heat working until they could replace the unit. The installation was completed the next day and in record time thanks to Glenn, Jorge, Kyle and Rodney. World-class service.

O

n a central Florida road in January of 2008, Heather L. Hurd, 26, and her fiancé were on their way to meet their families and their wedding planner when a texting and speeding tractor trailer driver slammed into their vehicle and eight other stopped cars–he’d never even applied his brakes. Heather, then living in Florida but originally from Maryland, was killed instantly. Following the tragedy, Heather ’s parents Russell and Kim became tireless and outspoken advocates for distracted driving laws.

“Literally, we started this two months to the day after Heather was killed,” Russell Hurd says. “We heard there was a bill in the Maryland legislature to ban texting while driving. We had no real information or any facts–we just went down there as grieving parents. I testified in front of the committee hearing the bill. It didn’t pass, but we walked out of there that day knowing that we wanted to make sure another family would never feel the pain and sorrow that we feel from this terrible epidemic.” Hurd says he became “a real pest,” for legislators: “I literally wrote these people almost daily for a year.” And his tireless advocacy paid off. “We were so proud when (Maryland) Gov. Martin O’Malley signed the bill. He shook our hands and handed us the pen he used to sign Heather’s Law.”

Honoring Heather

Since, the Hurds have lobbied for similar legislation in Texas, Oklahoma and Florida–the latter two states have passed no-texting-while-driving laws.

By "Putting Down The Phone" Hurd says he became “a real pest,” for legislators: “I literally wrote these people almost daily for a year.” And his tireless advocacy paid off.

16

COOL COMFORT I BLUEDOTMD.COM

In addition to lobbying, they created the Heather L. Hurd 5K Walk/Run at Harford Community College, Heather’s alma mater. In the seven years since they first created the event, it has raised more than $130,000 for the Remembrance Book Scholarships for Harford Community College students. On Halloween, Oct. 31 of 2015, the 7th annual run saw a record number of runners; some 600 people participated and raised a record $35,000. “We thought in the beginning that laws would be the end all but of course they’re not. We just felt a continuing education and awareness campaign is the key, so that’s when we started the Run.” The event is far more than a run, Hurd says. They use the event to promote awareness and provide education by including a highway safety expo. “We try to make it fun and hope that we’re getting the message out there.” At a college where young people are everywhere; a perfect place to demonstrate the devastating effects of texting while driving. “If one person gets the message then we’re successful,” Hurd says.

The Hurds and Blue Dot

The Hurds and the Blue Dot family are close; their respective tragedies drew them together. And Hurd has spoken to company technicians on a number of occasions; indeed, company general manager Jeff Stagnoli says when Hurd has spoken to his staff, “you see grown men cry.”

Hurd, who speaks all over the country, says “when you put a face with a story, sometimes people really get it.” “I tell them think about someone in your life that you love with all your heart. That’s your Heather,” he says. “That’s your reason for not picking up that phone, for not sending that text. That’s what I’m trying to send home. By hearing our story, we hope that message will keep their family whole.” Stagnoli was so moved that he implemented a no-phones policy in his company. “We need to put down our phones,” he says. “We incorporate that discussion with our technicians; these guys are on the road every day so our rule is simple: no cell phone use in the vehicles.” Blue Dot participates in the ATT ‘Pledge’ program and specifically, technicians on the road have the ATT DriveMode app on their phones which turns on when the GPS detects the vehicle is driving (at 15 mph), silencing incoming alerts and text messages, sending an automatic reply and voice calls go directly to voicemail. If one of his drivers tries to use the phone anyway, Stagnoli is alerted via text message.

“I tell them think about someone in your life that you love with all your heart. That’s your Heather,” Hurd says. “That’s your reason for not picking up that phone, for not sending that text. That’s what I’m trying to send home. By hearing our story, we hope that message will keep their family whole.”

And a fairly unpopular program has also been instituted, but Stagnoli says he’s not fazed by that unpopularity because it can save lives: every Blue Dot service vehicle is equipped with a dash cam. “Listen, some guys may not like it but it’s an important safety tool and brings a lot of visibility to what we do every day to make sure our drivers are focused on driving only.” And there’s more. The company also participates in twice-yearly Smith System advanced driver training, in fact, the company safety manager is a certified Smith System trainer. “We do all of this because safety on the road is a number one priority,” Stagnoli says. “We have 90 vehicles on the road, and, knock on wood, we do have an extremely strong safety record. At the end of the day, this commitment to safety helps us all sleep better.” For more information please visit Harford.edu/heather

Was Your System

PROPERLY INSTALLED?

I

f you Google the phrase “HVAC hacks” you’ll find a multitude of entertaining videos and photos of air conditioning installations gone terribly wrong. For those of us on the outside, it may seem funny to see the mayhem, but for the victims of poor air conditioning and heating installation, the associated costs can be huge. Sadly, cases of HVAC hackery are on the rise. If your HVAC equipment isn’t properly installed, you risk causing serious damage to the equipment and your home. If you’re lucky enough to not have to pay for a major repair bill or a new installation, chances are you’re still going to see higher energy bills. During installation, there are many things an installer has to consider. For starters, it’s vital to assure that air is able to flow

18

COOL COMFORT I BLUEDOTMD.COM

through the system unimpeded. If any part of the system’s ability to push air is obstructed, that’s going to translate into higher energy bills since the system will have to work harder to move air throughout the home. “Make sure that the air distribution system, or the ductwork, is sized correctly to deliver the amount of airflow into the home,” says Jeff Stagnoli, the General manager of Blue Dot. “You’re able to maximize the efficiency of the air conditioning system itself after you make sure that it can disperse air properly.” Jeff says the next step is to make sure that coolant levels are properly balanced. A system that doesn’t contain enough refrigerant isn’t working at maximum efficiency, and conversely, a system may become damaged if too much is used. Assuring that your system has just the right amount is crucial to its longevity and performance. There is also a risk of electrical fires associated with improperly installed air conditioning and heating units. A professional should have all the right equipment available to see to it that your system is installed safely. Something as

simple as improper wiring can cause power surges and overloads, which could lead to serious overheating and burnouts. “Thickness of the wire makes all the difference in the world when considering what you should use,” Jeff says. “Properlysized electrical wires assure that the system is not going to cause any fire hazards.” So, how do you protect yourself from shoddy equipment installation? First, you should check to see that the company you’re working with has all the necessary state licenses and insurance. Second, make sure they pull a building permit for the installation. Doing the above is reassurance that an installer is taking everything to task the way they should by having the proper tools and training. “If your air conditioning and heating equipment isn’t installed properly, it could end up costing you a fortune down the line,” Jeff says. “Doing a little bit of homework on proper installation procedures, and checking to make sure that all proper licenses, insurance, and permits are in place will go a long way towards protecting you and your family.”

EVEN YOUR A/C Needs A Check-Up

Y

our air conditioner is one of the hardest working appliances in your home, and it deserves some love and special attention. At least once a year, it’s important to give your A/C system a full inspection and tune-up, to assure that it’s running smoothly when you need it most. While Maryland summers tend to be shorter then Maryland winters, temperatures do soar into the 80s and 90s. Chances are your air conditioner runs constantly for most of the summer. During that time, filters will become dirty, coils can become caked with dust, blockages may develop, and system leaks may become worse. Any number of issues may develop in your system while it’s actively working overtime to cool your home, and conversely, your system may also develop problems while it’s dormant during the winter months. Servicing your unit allows any potential concerns to be spotted early, before they become worse. If your air conditioning system has a small problem that you allow to spiral downward, a major repair could be in your future. The cost of an air conditioner repair–or worse, a full system replacement–is almost certainly going to be more expensive than a maintenance appointment. Look at it this way: If your car needs an oil change and you neglect to take care of it, you could end up blowing the engine. Your air conditioner works in much the same way–you have to maintain it regularly or you risk causing serious damage that could end up costing you a small fortune. The longevity and health of your system is only part of the reason why regular upkeep is a great idea. Annual maintenance assures that your system is working as efficiently as possible, using only the amount of energy it needs to get the job done. In short, keeping your system clean and tuned-up improves energy efficiency, and will likely save you money on energy bills.

The longevity and health of your system is only part of the reason why regular upkeep is a great idea. Annual maintenance assures that your system is working as efficiently as possible, using only the amount of energy it needs to get the job done. 20

COOL COMFORT I BLUEDOTMD.COM

For older systems, this annual maintenance is even more important, and not just because it’s at increased risk for breaking down. Older systems are less energy-efficient and, combined with the rising cost of power, saving money while using them can be a real hassle. By paying for a relatively inexpensive service call once or twice a year, you’re almost assuredly going to get that money back in terms of what you’ll save on bills. A maintenance visit keeps all systems running at an optimal level, and for older systems it may be what prevents a major malfunction. Regular maintenance has an up-front cost, but neglecting to do it could be far more expensive. In the end, a large repair bill is going to cost you far more, and the savings you’ll reap on energy bills are worth the cost of an appointment. Remember, no machine is designed to work forever. Your A/C system needs to be taken care of properly, and doing so could expand its lifespan well beyond the years the manufacturer ever intended. 1-800-BLUE-DOT I COOL COMFORT

Carbon Monoxide, Keep Your Family Safe from this Silent Killer!

T

his silent killer is odorless, colorless, tasteless and virtually undetectable. Deadly carbon monoxide (CO) is perhaps the most common type of fatal air poisoning. Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning, which may mimic other types of poisoning and infections, include headache, nausea, vomiting and fatigue; sounds a bit like flu. In homes, and especially in winter months, the danger of carbon monoxide poisoning increases. The Centers for Disease Control estimate that some 430 people die every year from unintentional carbon monoxide poisoning. Don’t take chances. Protect your family (and pets.) by immediately installing a CO detector on every floor, especially near bedrooms. Any appliance that burns fuel is at risk for releasing carbon monoxide if something goes wrong, including fossil fuel-burning furnaces,

22

COOL COMFORT I BLUEDOTMD.COM

gas stoves and water heaters. If carbon monoxide is released, you and your family may not know until it’s too late. Additional symptoms include heart palpitations, confusion, and drowsiness, but because of the invisible nature of CO, identifying your condition can be a problem without a proper carbon monoxide detector. Carbon monoxide poisoning affects more than 20,000 people annually with hundreds of fatalities caused by accidental carbon monoxide poisoning. Yet not everyone remembers to install CO detectors let alone check them regularly. And, according to a 2014 study, 1 million U.S. homes experience high levels of carbon monoxide. It is generally recommended that any dwelling with fuel-burning appliances have at least one carbon monoxide detector installed.

Just like smoke detectors, having working carbon monoxide sensors in your home is critically important to the health and safety of you, your family and your pets. Carbon monoxide detectors work by measuring the toxicity of the air. If CO levels exceed a certain threshold, the device will let out a loud beep to alert anyone in the vicinity of the potential danger. This typically happens before one starts noticing any of the symptoms of poisoning and before any damage can be done to any of the people and pets who live in your home.

A

t once heartbreaking and life-affirming, Dominic Osorio’s story will stay with you. Known as ‘The Dominator’ for his superhero-like strength, courage and heart, Dominic was just seven years old when he tragically lost his two-year heroic and fearless battle with brain cancer in November of 2009. Dominic’s mother Nicole Spagna Stagnoli prefers to say her boy earned his angel wings the day he passed away. Now, seven years later, she calls the observance of his death his ‘angel-versary.’ “He was so strong, his personality so illuminating,” Nicole says, a certain light and lilt in her voice when she speaks of her son. “My mama’s boy–it was always him and me together.” Shortly after his fifth birthday, Dominic was diagnosed as having a brain tumor. The boy had complained of a bad headache, something not commonly found in children. A scan revealed he had Glioma, a cancerous brain tumor, and a surgery performed just a few weeks later successfully removed most of the tumor. Dominic began chemotherapy in the spring of 2008, and while the side effects can often be debilitating, Dominic was the Dominic his family knew and loved: a playful, happy boy, even with, as Nicole says, a catheter port implanted in his chest.

D.O. BELIEVE FOUNDATION

PEDIATRIC CANCER by Ellyn Santiago

After six months of chemo, doctors found the tumor had grown dramatically. An emergency surgery was performed but left him partially paralyzed. An intense course of physical therapy was begun to help him to relearn how to walk and talk all the while undergoing daily radiation therapy. Those treatments were done under anesthesia but Nicole and nurses believed his physical therapy was being hindered by the daily anesthesia and requested they be allowed to teach him to lie perfectly still for the 10-minute radiation treatment – no mean feat for a young child. The boy who adored superheroes was nicknamed ‘The Dominator’ by his grandmother. Nicole and some nurses created a comic featuring the superhero ‘The Dominator,’ whose power was his ability to defeat evil by “laying completely still in a huge rotating radiation chamber that shot out bright red laser beams.” And with perseverance and love, Nicole was able to have her son, as The Dominator, lie still for the radiation treatments which were completed by February of 2009. He was now six years old and while the course of treatment was arduous at best, he still smiled. But by the summer of 2009, the worst–the tumor had grown yet again. The once vibrant, joyful and carefree little boy was fading. Dominic slipped into a coma in October and passed away in November of 2009. He was just seven years old. Nicole founded the D.O. Believe Foundation not long after Dominic died. Her goal from the beginning was to both raise awareness about pediatric cancer and raise funds for children’s cancer research, focusing primarily on brain tumors. The foundation’s key event is

its annual D.O. Believe 5/10K Walk & Run. Sponsored by Blue Dot and myriad local businesses and community members. The event has seen more than 1,000 participants and more than $75,000 has been raised for pediatric cancer research at Nemours Center for Childhood Cancer Research in Wilmington, DE. Just a few days before the anniversary of his death, Nicole talks about how she copes with her loss. She says that her mission in life, in memory of Dominic, is to shine a light on the seriously underfunded and often overlooked area of childhood cancers, especially brain cancers. “People ask how many children I have. I say a teenager in high school and one who’s forever seven,” she says. “They don’t know what to do. They don’t know what to say. Our society is uncomfortable with grief, especially when it’s a child. The D.O. Believe Run allows me to speak about him freely.”

"He was so strong, his personality so illuminating,” Nicole says, a certain light and lilt in her voice when she speaks of her son. “My mama’s boy; it was always him and me together.”

Nicole says pediatric cancers are rarely discussed and certainly don’t receive a fraction of the attention other cancers do–indeed, only three percent of the National Cancer Institute’s research budget is dedicated to “finding a cure for our children.” “There are only two drugs for pediatric cancer and those are for leukemia and neuroblastoma,” Nicole says. “We know what October is. But did you know that September, Dominic’s birthday month is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month? People have no idea. I want them to know.” According to the American Childhood Cancer Organization, nearly 1,600 children are diagnosed with cancer annually and a fourth of them will not survive the disease. “We need to change that,” Nicole says. “We can do it. If we D.O. Believe.” Childhood Cancer Awareness Month’s color is gold, the most precious of metals for the most precious of us: our children. WHY A FURNACE

Might Be Right For You 30

COOL COMFORT I BLUEDOTMD.COM

A

ccording to the Department of Energy, space heating is the largest energy expense for the average U.S. home, accounting for roughly 45 percent of energy bills. Because of this, it’s important to choose the heat system that’s best for you, and there are many. Furnaces used to be considered inefficient, mainly because many of them were, but the newest gas models are anything but, and might be right for you and your family.

Rheem’s high-performance 90%+ gas furnaces are considered the most reliable furnace lines on the market, and its smart PlusOne™ Performance feature gives customers “enhanced confidence about their comfort for years to come.” And the PlusOne™ features a reliable and safe ignition system so “customers enjoy unmatched durability and years of worryfree operation.”

FURNACE ADVANTAGES

The Rheem 90%+ Gas Furnace line also features 360° Integration™ with its exclusive EcoNet™ technology that allows Rheem heating, cooling and water heating products to communicate with each other on one integrated network, which gives homeowners “an easy way to control the most energy-consuming systems in the home – from home or onthe-go – it also makes it faster and easier for you to accurately install, set up and maintain a complete home comfort system.”

EFFICIENCY: The majority of furnaces produced within the last several years are up to 98 percent energy efficient, meaning 98 percent of the energy taken is used to generate or distribute heat. This is as high as any efficiency you’ll find with other heat sources. FLEXIBILITY: There are many different models and sizes that can run on a range of fuel types. Also, this means finding a furnace that will ideally suit a particular home isn’t difficult. Another thing that makes furnaces so flexible is that they can often be hooked up to existing ducts. So if your home already has ductwork installed, you can easily connect a furnace without having to install extra pipes, radiators, and baseboard heaters. SIZE: Furnaces come in a variety of sizes and can often be quite small, the burners, heat exchangers, and blower arranged together in a compact manner. Boilers, on the other hand, require large tanks of hot water and thus take up more space.

“Blue Dot partners with Rheem because of its quality, dedication and commitment to high efficiency, state-of-the-art technology and unparalleled reliability,” says Blue Dot general manager Jeff Stagnoli. “Like Rheem says, they have ‘thought of everything …and then some.’ We could not agree more.” For more information on the Rheem 90%+ Gas Furnace line, call 1-800-BLUE-DOT today.

LOCATION: Furnaces are often called central heating systems because they usually occupy a central location inside your home. In most instances, this will be in the basement, which won’t lower the aesthetic value of the home. FASTER HEATING: Furnaces work almost immediately to bring heat into your home, whereas a heat source like a boiler has to heat up a full water tank each time you need warmth. This can take a while. Newer, high efficiency furnaces use a two stage burner, which not only provides faster heating, but also better distribution of that heat. The benefits are twofold: you don’t waste energy (and money) by overheating when turning the furnace on, and your home is more evenly heated, no noticeable hot and cold zones. BEST CHOICE? RHEEM’S 90%+ GAS FURNACE LINE The new Rheem 90%+ Gas Furnace line delivers performance and high energy efficiency. Indeed, this Energy Star furnace was engineered for efficiency, up to 97% Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) which measures furnace efficiency. The more efficient your furnace, the more heat you’ll get for your money. Rheem itself says, “Much of the credit goes to our new heat exchanger design” which improves airflow, helping to reduce noise and increased efficiency on your overall HVAC system.

WHICH WATER HEATER Is Best For You?

G

one are the days where all homes have a conventional water heater. For all water heating needs, there is now a variety of options for you to choose from. But before you choose a new water heater, take a look at some of the options that are available. ELECTRIC WATER HEATERS: Electric water heaters use electricity to heat a water tank. Unlike gas systems, they require very little upkeep and are relatively inexpensive to install. They can be placed anywhere in the home, and smaller tanks can even be placed under sinks. Newer models are also very efficient in terms of their power usage. GAS WATER HEATERS: This is the classic American staple for water heating. They use gas to heat a water tank and, while their energy efficiency has improved, the basic technology hasn’t changed in decades. The advantage of gas water heaters is that they heat water relatively quickly and are fairly cheap to operate, s i n c e t h ey d o n ’ t b u r n a to n o f ga s . However, since they are reheating a tank of water whenever it cools down or is used up, they consume more energy than a tankless system. The best way to find out which hot water heating system will save you the most money and fit your needs is to call Blue Dot at 1-800-BLUE-DOT. The experts there can help you make an informed decision, and get you a water heater that’s right for your home.

Cost Difference Between A/C Repair and A/C Replacement The first thing that you are going to want to look into is what the difference in cost is between having your current A/C repaired or having a brand new one installed. If the cost of fixing your expensive home appliance is close to your quote for a new installation, the replacement option is a better choice.

Age is Often the Determinant

A/C ACTING UP?

Decide To Repair Or Replace It

T

he air conditioning unit outside of your home works hard day in and day out to keep your family cool. Just like every other bit of technology in your life, your air conditioner accumulates wear and tear every day from casual use. There is a good chance that installing a new air conditioning system will end up costing you less in the long run. You can decide whether you are going to repair your current unit or replace it. Here are some tips to help you figure out what the future of your air conditioner is.

34

COOL COMFORT I BLUEDOTMD.COM

On the other hand, with a newer air conditioner that requires just a simple fix that is low in cost, you will find it more beneficial to just keep what you have and complete the small repair. When it comes to an older air conditioner though, the improvement on energy efficiency alone can quickly offset the price paid for a new system. Keep this in mind when trying to choose between an A/C repair or an A/C replacement.

The General Rule of Air Conditioner Efficiency

The rule of thumb for trying to decide, based on the age, is if the system is around two years old, there is a good chance repairs will be beneficial. An air conditioner’s lifespan is around eight to fifteen years. If yours is around that age, replacement is what you are looking for. When it comes to air conditioners that are about four years old, it is possible for the decision to go either way.

TAKE OUR REPAIR VS REPLACE QUIZ

Is it Time to Repair or Replace Your Faulty HVAC Unit? 1. Age of your unit? a. 1-7 b. 8+

2. How much have you spent on your unit in the past year? a. Under $600 b. Over $600

3. Are your energy bills increasing each month? a. Yes b. No

4. Is your HVAC system maintained regularly?

Get Rid of Faulty Systems

If your air conditioner has done nothing but give you problems since it was installed, it could save you future headaches by just junking your constantly failing air conditioning unit. This will save yourself more hassle than you know. Having a system that is reliable and efficient that also includes a yearly scheduled maintenance visit will prove an amazing choice that will continue functioning for years.

Rely on Newer Technology

The biggest advantage of a new A/C unit is the strong possibility that the new model is energy-efficient. It is not likely that the monthly savings on your utility bills will show the savings in the first month. In the course of a few years, that air conditioning unit can successfully pay for itself and begin to make you money.

Energy Star Efficiency

When choosing a new air conditioning unit, look for the seal from Energy Star. This model meets or exceeds guidelines that the Environmental Protection Agency sets for energy efficiency. This can all get confusing if you are not sure what it means. You can expect outstanding customer service that will exceed your expectations when you choose Blue Dot. The Benefit of Mitsubishi Electric

DUCT-FREE AIR CONDITIONERS The benefits are often overlooked by customers, but we like to point out that duct-free systems can be installed in places where conventionally ducted systems simply can’t go.

D

uctless mini-split or duct-free system HVAC units can be a useful alternative to cool and heat homes and businesses. Through a variety of sizes and capabilities of controlling the air temperature in individual zones or rooms in the building, they offer both economic and environmental advantages. HVAC companies like Blue Dot are installing them in customer's additions, garages, bonus rooms and renovations of single family homes. They also have a money and energy savings advantage when some areas of a home are used infrequently or not at all (such as a three season room or a bonus room above a garage), by only conditioning the space that is occupied. Duct-free systems, as the name implies, have no duct work and consist of an outdoor condenser and an indoor air-handling unit. These are linked together with tubing that houses the power cable, refrigerant tubing, and a drain tube for condensation. In many ways, they operate in a manner quite similar to a standard air conditioning system. Jeff Stagnoli, general manager of Blue Dot, noted that the main advantages of duct-free systems are ease of installation, cost savings, energy savings and flexibility in locating the system for cosmetic concerns and sound control as well as logistical applications. Stagnoli also highlighted the fact that his company is recognized as a Mitsubishi Electric Diamond Contractor. “The benefits are often overlooked by customers, but we like to point out that duct-free systems can be installed in places where conventional ducted systems simply can’t go. Options for interior design include ceiling and wall mounted units and drop ceiling applications to allow the owner to customize the look of the space,” he said. Floor-standing models are also available. Most indoor units have profiles of about eight to eleven inches deep and have a range of aesthetically refined designs suitable for any home or office. All models offer a remote control to easily make adjustments to the system’s air flow pattern or temperature and on and off when it’s positioned high on a wall or suspended from a ceiling. Mitsubishi Electric Duct-free systems can also help to keep your home safer because there is only a small hole for the tubing to pass through the wall. Window-mounted and through-the-wall room air conditioners, unfortunately, can provide an easy entrance for intruders.

More than three decades ago, Mitsubishi Electric launched its North American HVAC division bringing ductless systems to the U.S. Many are EnergyStar rated and qualify for federal tax credits. Within seven years, it had begun its campaign to enlist quality dealers and by 2009, it introduced its Star Lineup. Just two years later, its split-ductless systems won the Top 10 Product Award from BuildingGreen. For decades now, Mitsubishi Electric US, Inc. Cooling & Heating Division’s advanced climate control systems have provided personalized comfort while conserving energy and promoting environmental sustainability. Mitsubishi Electric is proud to be the third largest manufacturer of cooling and heating systems in the world. But its goal is to be first globally in providing “comfort without compromise.”

“For many of our customers, the unique advantages of this type of system are important. Our installers are highly trained, they attend hands-on training as well as up-to-date factory training and testing,” Jeff continued. “I would caution against using a company whose technicians are not proficient in this type of installation, as each unit must be correctly sized and placed. An error here could result in wasted energy, improper temperature or humidity control, and greater long-term operational expenses.” Home and business owners who are replacing existing systems, building new, or remodeling may consider duct-free systems. Jeff says, “The cost savings can be significant in terms of installation and energy use without compromising the comfort level of the rooms or occupants. Our professional technicians are continuously trained to help customers determine the best options for cooling and heating your home.” 1-800-BLUE-DOT I COOL COMFORT

TOO DRY? TOO HUMID?

How About Just Right?

T

he humidity, or lack of it, in your home can make a big difference in your overall comfort. Too dry or too moist air can be both harsh and unpleasant. Sticky, humid, summerlike air makes many of us miserable. And very dry, heated air in winter wreaks its own special havoc on our bodies. Achieving wellbalanced, whole-home humidity control in every season can not only provide exceptional comfort, but can prevent health problems and at the same time, protect your home.

Why Dehumidifiers?

Mold and mildew reside where it’s moist–shower curtains, windowsills, air conditioning ducts, and sinks. In homes where humidity is very high, mold can even form on furniture or in carpets. While it’s gross to look at, mold and mildew can also cause issues with breathing for those who suffer from allergies or asthma. A dehumidifier makes it more difficult for mold to thrive by cutting back the humidity it needs to flourish. It isn’t just mold and mildew that thrive in a moist environment. Other allergens and disease-causing bacteria love places that are wet. Dehumidifiers help to reduce the number of these pathogens too, keeping the air you breathe cleaner and healthier. 38

COOL COMFORT I BLUEDOTMD.COM

by Ellyn Santiago

According to Peter Blaha, Product Marketing Manager for Aprilaire, whole home dehumidifiers pull air from every room in your home through the return ducts. It removes the moisture and then sends dry air back throughout your home. It works in conjunction with your air conditioner to efficiently balance the humidity levels in your home, but can also work independently on days when you don't need the air conditioner. He recommends keeping relative humidity levels below 60% in your home to keep mold and mildew from growing and to keep that musty smell at bay. “Our dehumidifiers help by removing excess moisture and reducing the damage that mildew and mold can have on the sustainability of your home and the health of your family,” he continues. A whole-home dehumidifier extracts the moisture from your home. And an Energy-Star rated whole-home dehumidifier like Aprilaire’s 1730A can help qualify your home for the GreenBuilt Certification Program of the National Association of Home Builders.

Why Humidifiers?

Dry climates obviously can benefit from humidifiers, but winters can be even more brutal when heated very dry air is circulating in your home. Maintaining a proper humidity level in your home is important for several reasons. The recommended average relative humidity is between 35 percent and 45 percent, this range providing the best comfort for your family, while helping to protect your belongings (especially ones made of wood from floors to furniture) from damage caused by dryness. And low humidity can affect your skin by exacerbating skin diseases like eczema, psoriasis, and dermatitis. Even if you don’t have a diagnosable skin problem, you can still suffer associated symptoms, such as dry, scaly, itchy skin. These issues can worsen in colder months, when the skin is more likely to become depleted of moisture. This is commonly referred to as “winter itch.” Dry air will draw moisture out of your skin, potentially causing small cracks on your skin’s surface. Cracked skin increases your risk of becoming sick by providing an entryway for possibly dangerous pathogens. Dry air also takes its toll on your eyes given it's known to increase the evaporation of tears, possibly disrupting the moisture balance necessary for a healthy and comfortable eye surface. And then there’s the havoc wreaked on your sinuses. A recent study found that nasal congestion may be related to the temperature and humidity of inhaled air, possibly more than any other variable. While high humidity is known for causing nasal congestion, dry air can as well. Very dry air dries out your sinuses to the point of irritating the membranes, leading to inflammation. And flu viruses survive longer and spread more easily in low humidity. According to research published in Environmental Health Perspectives, keeping proper humidity levels may help to lower rates of respiratory infections and allergies [1]. With whole-home humidifiers, the correct amount of moisture is delivered throughout your home. Blue Dot Heating and Air Conditioning is your solution for air in your home that’s too dry or too humid. Blue Dot technicians are experts in indoor air quality and will help you achieve balanced humidity levels in your home to keep you comfortable but also healthier with Aprilaire humidity-control products including whole-home humidifiers and dehumidifiers. Call Blue Dot today at 1-800-BLUE-DOT to help keep you and your family comfortable and breathing easy.

A Whole-Home Dehumidifier Automatically extract the right amount of humidity from your home When it’s muggy outside, it’s muggy inside. And excess humidity can make you miserable. You can literally see, feel and smell it: • Indoor condensation appears on windows, mirrors & cold drinks • Your house becomes a breeding ground for insects • Wood floors, trim and wood furniture warp or rot • You experience uncomfortable sweating at normal indoor temperatures • Skin feels sticky in summer/clammy in winter • Rooms smell musty High Humidity Can Cause Health Problems Without a dehumidifier, excess moisture can cause: • Mold and mildew to grow • Dust mites to thrive These contaminants can trigger asthma, allergies and other ailments.

Whole-Home Humidifier Automatically deliver the perfect amount of moisture to your home

Using an Aprilaire Whole-Home Humidifier is one of the most effective ways to add the

proper amount of humidity to your indoor air and prevent the problems caused by dry air. Dry Air Can Damage Your Family’s Health and Home • Low humidity can increase your likelihood of getting colds, flu and other upper respiratory ailments. • Low humidity can cause home damage.

• Low humidity can cause higher energy costs

Beyond the damage low humidity causes, it makes you uncomfortable. It can cause:

• Bloody noses • Dry mouth and dry, itchy eyes • Sore throats • Cracked, itchy skin • Painful static shocks

Achieving well-balanced, whole-home humidity control in every season can not only provide exceptional comfort, but can prevent health problems and at the same time, protect your home.

EFFICIENCY A heat pump heating and air conditioning system (HVAC) is very efficient. It works differently than a gas or electric furnace since, as the name implies, it works by moving heat instead of creating heat. Consider that heating and cooling typically account for at least half of energy bills. Depending on your current system, at optimal operations, a heat pump could save you up to 30% of your energy costs. A reliable indicator of efficiency is COP, or Coefficient of Performance, which in easier to understand terms means “how much do I get for my money?” To illustrate this, a common resistance electric heater has a COP of 1 (1 part electricity converts to 1 part heat), while a heat pump that is installed and running correctly has a COP of between 3 and 4 (1 part of electricity converts to 3 or 4 parts heat). In other words, for every dollar of energy you get put into the heating system, you get 3-4 times as much heating power out of it with an efficient heat pump system. Since heat pumps work by moving heat into your home in the winter and out of your home in the summer, they don’t work as efficiently in extremely cold climates. There is simply not enough heat in the outside air to efficiently heat the inside of a home. SAFETY Heat pumps are safe since they move heat, not create it, there are no flames or hot surfaces and they do not need oxygen to burn, as with gas. Since no flame is produced, no exhaust flue is required and that reduces dangers of carbon monoxide fumes entering your home although proper venting will still be required for any other gas fired appliances. ECO-FRIENDLY There are no fumes or smoke added to the air, and air is filtered, which helps removed odors and dust, which can benefit people with allergies or asthma.

Heat Pump Heating & Cooling System?

HOT JOBS, COOL INDUSTRY

Debt Free Pathway To A Career

F

or every three HVAC techs leaving the workforce there’s only one trained technician entering the field. Or try this: Job growth in the HVAC field is double and in some states, even triple that of all other occupations. Not convinced yet? How about this: The median income for an HVAC tech is about $42,000. Still not convinced it’s a smart career choice? Well, according to the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics, growth in jobs and salary is expected in the immediate future for HVAC specialists, with job growth expected to top 14% [1]. Finally consider this fact: HVAC gigs cannot be out-sourced; these jobs are here to stay. Not to mention, essentially every home requires heating, cooling, plumbing and electrical products, service and repair. Talk about job security. But there are simply not enough skilled techs joining the workforce. But some companies are so anxious to recruit new technicians they have their own on-the-job training programs. And Blue Dot is one of those companies. Blue Dot offers generous wages and benefits, overtime and a merit-based advancement policy. But it is Blue Dot’s ‘Careers in the Trades’ program that is perhaps the most exciting. Blue Dot offers a debt-free pathway to a career in HVAC service, installation and repair. Partnering with local technical schools and community colleges, the company ’s apprenticeship program allows participants to get hands-on training–and get paid for it–even as they attend classes toward certification. Blue Dot pays up to a 100% of trade school tuition for employees in the apprenticeship program. In addition, the employees earn a wage while working as an apprentice in the HVAC trade. Employees in the trade can also advance into supervisory roles and other opportunities the industry. Participants must be 18, have a high school diploma or the equivalent, pass a drug screen and background check and have a valid driver’s license. And, perhaps most importantly, be willing to study and work hard. But the rewards for that work can be measured in not just dollars and cents – given the high salaries– but in job growth potential and, for many most importantly, job security. The industry is recession-proof. Company human resources manager Danielle Walker says the program is important because “younger people interested in the trades are hard to find.”

“It seems that young people aren’t encouraged in high school to look at the trade,” Danielle says. “We add a couple of apprentices every year to have a pipeline of trained and experienced technicians in the workforce.” For more information about Blue Dot’s employment opportunities and our apprenticeship program contact Danielle at 1-800-BLUE-DOT or visit bluedotmd.com/careers/. hen you purchased your new air conditioning system it came with a manufacturer’s warranty, and you should have received a copy. That paperwork contains the manufacturer’s terms and conditions for your warranty. If you cannot find your paperwork, please do not hesitate to call our customer service department, and we will be happy to assist you. Manufacturers are beginning to enforce, with greater regularity, the terms and conditions within your paperwork. These changes may affect you.  Most manufacturers allow you to transfer warranties to the new owner upon the sale of your property for a small fee, and within 30 days of closing.  Manufacturers are now requiring the use of OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) parts. At the moment, there are thousands of possible OEM parts for any of the multiple manufacturers, which makes using and obtaining parts a difficult situation. The effect is that we will no longer be able to use generic truck stock parts. Although these changes are difficult, we make it our priority to bring you comfort as quickly as possible.  Manufacturers only cover work performed during normal business hours. Blue Dot never charges for overtime, weekend or holiday hours.

MAINTENANCE PLAN

Why You Should Have A Preventative Maintenance Plan for Your Heating & Cooling Equipment

E

very home owner should have a preventative maintenance plan to protect their HVAC equipment. A maintenance plan gives you peace of mind knowing you have a reliable and trusted HVAC company. You may wonder if Preventive Maintenance Plans are really worth the cost. With a plan in place, your heating and cooling systems are each checked once a year. Yes, clean equipment is nice, but what are the real benefits to a preventive maintenance plan?

You may be surprised at what one inspection can do or prevent. Our HVAC maintenance plan can help lower your utility bills, extend the life of your equipment, reduce or eliminate the need for costly repairs and increase the performance of your comfort systems.

Three Major Benefits of HVAC Preventative Maintenance Plans: 1. Safety: Our Preventative Maintenance Service will test all safeties and controls to ensure that your system is as safe as possible. 2. Efficiency: With proper yearly checks we are able to make adequate adjustments to make sure your equipment is running at its maximum efficiency. Clean air filters ensure maximum airflow while unrestricted indoor and outdoor coils allow for better heat transfer. (Your heating and cooling equipment can be about 48%* of your utility bills and can become very costly to replace or repair). 2. Durability: An HVAC maintenance plan for your home can extend the life of your heating and cooling equipment. *www.energy.gov/public-services/homes/heating-cooling 1-800-BLUE-DOT I COOL COMFORT
