GEOTHERMAL

HOW DOES IT WORK? By Roseann Haslett

Through government assisted research and industry experience, the cost of generating geothermal power has decreased by 25% over the past two decades. The average home installation costs from $20,000 to $25,000.

Y

ou have very likely come across geothermal energy in your lifetime or maybe you’ve seen the photos of frosted-headed Japanese macaques relaxing in the hot springs in Nagano, Japan. Maybe you’ve visited Yellowstone National Park and have seen the hot mud bubbling, and Old Faithful spewing? Perhaps you’ve vacationed in Arkansas and luxuriated in a Hot Springs spa? Geothermal energy is a power generated from natural steam, hot water, hot rocks, or lava in the Earth’s crust. About 20 percent of this energy comes from the original formation of the planet and 80 percent from radioactive decay of minerals. How do geothermal systems work in nature? Temperatures at the core–mantle boundary may reach over 7,200 °F and flows continuously outward. Think: volcanoes, lava . . . Hawaii. The heat however, usually remains below the Earth’s crust, heating nearby rock and water—sometimes to temperatures as hot as 700°F. When the earth heats the water, hot water or steam can be trapped in permeable and porous rocks under a layer of waterproof rock, and a geothermal reservoir can form. Most hot 6

water stays deep underground, trapped in cracks and porous rock. People from Paleolithic times used hot springs for bathing, warmth, cleansing, and also used minerals in the water as a source of healing. The oldest known hot spring pool was built in China during the 3rd century BC, and the ancient Romans used hot springs water for public bath houses. In 14th Century France, in the spa town of Chaudes-Aigues, people used geothermal water to not only heat their spas but also their houses. The earliest industrial exploitation of geothermal energy began in 1827, with the use of geyser steam to extract boric acid from volcanic mud in a dry steam field in Larderello, Italy. Prince Piero Ginori Conti tested the first geothermal power generator in July 1904, at Larderello, again, where he built the first geothermal power plant in 1910. The geothermal heat pump came into implementation around the late 1940s, making it possible to heat the Commonwealth Building in Portland, Ore., in 1946, and the first residential open loop version in Ohio in 1948. Ten years later New Zealand produced

a geothermal energy plant, the first and only one since Larderello. In the early 1970s, Sweden implemented geothermal technology as a popular source for energy. Today, these systems can be installed in homes.

Geothermal energy:

• Is available everywhere for community district heating, space heating, spas, industrial processes, desalination, and agricultural applications. • Is a renewable resource because the heat emanating from the interior of the Earth is essentially limitless and continuous. • Is a resource that will never freeze. • May release greenhouse gases in power plants that are harmful, but can be contained with vents that trap the gases. Therefore, it has the potential to help mitigate global warming, and replace the use of fossil fuels. • Can reduce electricity usage. The electricity, which powers geothermal heat pumps only collects, concentrates, and delivers heat, not produces it. Compared with other heating and

7 Series

cooling systems, GHPs reduce electricity 30-60 percent. • Can help save on utility bills. This includes up to 80 percent in HVAC costs. A WaterFurnace geothermal system offers a 400 percent improvement in energy efficiency compared to high efficiency natural gas furnace systems. Additionally, the WaterFurnace system controls humidity and typically lasts over 20 years. A geothermal system uses a series of underground pipes called a “loop,” which are buried between 10-300 feet, where the earth’s temperature remains constant. These loops lay in 100-400 foot trenches, if installed horizontally and if space is available, or vertically, if not. The earth loop eliminates the need for fossil fuels. Also, they can be hidden under a landscaped area, a field or parking lot, etc. These heat pumps pull heat from the Earth and distribute it through a conventional duct system or a hot water tank. To cool, the system extracts heat from the building and pumps it into the earth loop, reversing the system.

When researching for a company, the home or business owner should request an experienced, qualified mechanical contractor who has been installing geo systems for many years, according to Tom Gordon, owner of Gordon Air Conditioning in Okaloosa/Walton County, Florida. “Look for the best contractor first,” he says. “The best home comfort system will leave you unsatisfied if installed incorrectly.”

The WaterFurnace 7 Series™ provides homeowners the ultimate in comfort and performance and represents our finest products. This line is for those who accept only the best and is built using the latest technologies and highest standards.

While the cost of drilling and exploration may be expensive, in the long run, geothermal energy will factor in technology, energy prices, subsidies, and interest rate decisions, from single housing to industry. Through government assisted research and industry experience, the cost of generating geothermal power has decreased by 25% over the past two decades. The average home installation costs from $20,000 to $25,000. Upon installation there is a 30 percent federal tax credit available, which typically saves homeowners between $6,000 and $ 7,500. The Long term and lowinterest financing coupled with reduced utility bills make geothermal an investment that begins to pay real monetary dividends within just a few years.

The Past, Present, & Future...

Our Journey

W

hat began humbly in the 1950s as a small family-run business is today, more than a half century later, a fixture in Huntington, Indiana; a name locals know and a business with a reputation as being successful and a champion for its community. Huntington Heating & Cooling is far more than just a livelihood for owners and employees, it’s a way of life – serving, servicing and giving back to its neighbors and a reputation for excellence has been its hallmark since the beginning.

The Beginning

There’s a story about the offer of a trade: a donkey for a bottle of propane gas. We’ll get back to that. Leo and Harriet Zahm had a small garden business in the early 1950s but Leo, who could “fix almost anything,” wanted to take on something new. Though the hard-working couple would keep the gardening business as a seasonal enterprise, they purchased a small Market Street propane company in 1956. The couple, who worked “247,” moved the operation to their own property and installed four large propane tanks with a dock near their house for filling smaller tanks. In 1959, they began to grow and branch out to include furnaces, sold from the front room of their home. “It was truly a Mom and Pop business,” said son Bob Zahm, now owner of the business – Huntington Heating and Cooling -- begun by his parents. “They worked 24 hours a day, seven days a week. But they did add help as the business grew.” Oh and about that donkey. The story Bob tells is that one customer wanted to exchange a tank of propane for a donkey. 8

Comfort Zone

by Ellyn Santiago

It didn’t work out though, sadly for young Bob who would have enjoyed that donkey. “Dad did not want to have to take care of the animal when the novelty wore off,” Bob says. The business was very successful and grew quickly, although Leo and Harriet never advertised. “Word of mouth made the business successful,” Bob says. In 1963, the couple sold the LP business to Skelly Oil Co., but remained in the heating business. It was that year they changed the name of the company to Huntington Heating. Three years later, in 1966, son, Richard Zahm purchased the business, changing the name to Dick’s Home Improvements. Oil heating repair and service was added in 1974. In 1978, Bob and his wife Leslie, purchased the business and changed the name to Huntington Heating & Cooling, Inc. in 1987. The company was doing groundbreaking work in the 1980s. Its first geothermal system with ground loop was installed in 1984 and today geothermal is a very large division within the company.

Accolades and awards

In 2000 and 2001 Bryant recognized HHC with a Medal of Excellence award for best business practices. In 2009, Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels recognized HHC with the ‘Half Century Award’ for contributions to the community and an impressive more than half-century in business. In the spring of 2010, The Geothermal Heat Pump Consortium recognized HHC as one of six companies nationwide that exemplifies the geothermal industry. more than 50,000 business leaders included an article about HHC and its contribution to the community and industry. In October of 2010, HHC reached an agreement with Matt Peregrine Heating & Air Conditioning to purchase the business and changed the name to Peregrine Heating & Cooling in Plymouth, Indiana.

A little Peregrine history is in order

Matt Peregrine felt bad about all the customers he’d been servicing for years when the company he worked for, Mayer Plumbing & Heating, abruptly went out of business. Matt, who had more than 13 years of HVAC experience, 11 of those years spent working with Mayer, just couldn’t walk away from the work and the customers he’d come to know like old friends. Matt, a North American Technician Excellence and Environmental Protection Agency-certified professional, said at the time in newspaper accounts that he felt a certain loyalty to those customers and knew what he had to do: start his own business. So with his strong faith in God and determination to work hard, he started Matt Peregrine Heating and Air Conditioning LLC in 2008. At the time, Matt, a Plymouth High School and Ivy Tech graduate, spoke in local newspapers about his values and how they relate to his business: “I can only take credit for treating my customers as I feel that God would want me to. As a result, I have had some success. Good work, completed as promised for a fair price is nothing spectacular because it is the way things should be.” Spectacular enough though, to grab the attention of HHC, who inked a deal with Peregrine in 2010. The two are now one and PeregrineHeating.com • 574-935-4634

GOOD AIR QUALITY A TREAT FOR YOU AND YOUR PETS by Jacqueline Cross

Y

ou might not realize this, but your home is essentially a Petri dish for dust, dander, mold, and micro-organisms. Dust mites, mold, and fungi all use your living space to multiply and spread, and pollen and dander builds up by the minute. Their presence can be reduced (and sometimes even prevented) through the use of modern technology and an up-to-date maintenance plan of your air conditioning/heating equipment. Air Quality affects quality of life—if you have a buildup of particles in your air, you can expect to lose sleep, have 12

Comfort Zone

difficulty breathing, nasal congestion, and sometimes worse. Humidity and other factors such as leaks in your ducts can bring in outside particles like pollen and dust, and those things add up over time. If you don’t maintain your systems, the air you breathe inside your house might be filled with more pollution than the air you breathe outside! Pets have an enormous impact on your indoor air quality too—dogs, cats, birds, anything living in your house will impact your air quality. Your dog is not intentionally trying to harm you, and your parrot probably doesn’t realize it is slowly smothering you HuntingtonHeating.com • 260-356-0186

with particles from its feathers and skin, so it’s up to you to create a safe place for your family (pets included!). People can still have pets and have good air quality, but there is always going to be an ongoing issue with dander with most pets. Pet ownership doesn’t mean you are stuck with bad air, but people with birds should be especially observant of their air quality. Birds are the worst offenders when it comes to dander, dust, and particles in the air. Making sure your house is sealed is also very important. Do you keep your windows open at night? Are you especially fond of keeping your screen door open? Also, do you know how well your windows are insulated and your door jams sealed? Keeping a tight seal on all the access points in your house is very important for your air quality because it reduces the potential threats from outside of your home, and allows you to sort through the possible offenders. Different people often have widely varied reactions to dander, pollen, and dust, so using the process of elimination can be a very useful tool in discovering the cause of one’s particular ailment due to air quality hazards. In addition to your pets affecting air quality, you must also be aware of the many micro-organisms that occupy our homes. Many of these organisms live out their lifespan unbeknownst to their human neighbors, and we don’t even see them until they turn to dust. There are, however, less innocuous microorganisms, species of mold and fungi whose mere presence in your home can be hazardous or even deadly. To prevent problems, it’s important to regularly check on your systems to see if they are performing how they should. Don’t assume everything is okay with your system because you have cold and hot air when you want it. Indoor air quality isn’t determined by air temperature. The ducts have to be regularly inspected to ensure that they are sealed and that they are maintaining the flow of air from one room to another. The drains have to be regularly checked and cleared of any obstructions. Everything adds up—the ducts, the air handler, the type of pets you have, how often you perform maintenance on your system, what type of equipment you use, and what steps you are taking to prevent problems.

GO DUCTLESS

D

uctless mini-splits, or duct-free HVAC units can be a useful alternative to cool and heat homes and businesses. Coming in a variety of sizes, and with the capability of controlling the air temperature in individual zones of a building or home, they offer both economic and environmental advantages. They’re perfect for residential and commercial consumers alike since they offer a unique way to save energy by only cooling areas that are presently being occupied. Duct-free systems, as the name implies, have no ductwork, and consist of an outdoor condenser and an indoor airhandling unit. These are linked together with tubing that houses the power cable, refrigerant, and a drain for condensation. In many ways, they operate in a manner quite similar to a standard air conditioning system. Duct-free systems can also help to keep your home safer because only a small hole is needed for the tubing to pass through the wall; whereas window-mounted and through-the-wall air conditioners, unfortunately, can provide an easy entrance for intruders. Because of the unique installation and placement associated with ductless mini-splits, not all air conditioning contractors are able to properly install them. While many consumers still have reservations about leaving the world of traditional duct air conditioners behind, they offer a huge cost savings for those on a budget.

Pets might not be intentionally trying to cause us harm by affecting our air quality, but the fact remains, they can and do affect our quality of life. If you are a pet owner, it’s up to you to learn more about this topic and stay up-to-date on the latest ways you can protect your health and the health of your beloved pets. hether basking in the warm summer sun or enjoying the crisp cool winter air, Indiana residents can maximize their cooling and heating system with a simple routine of regular maintenance. With a small amount of foresight, knowledge and time, home and business owners can enjoy clean and efficient air conditioning and heating throughout the year. One of the easiest and least expensive maintenance tasks is to simply frequently clean or replace air filters between visits from a professional. Not only does this improve the quality of the air within the home, it also extends the efficiency and lifespan of your air conditioning system. Huntington Heating & Cooling Inc., Service Manager Jeff Carnes, explains, “When we do a maintenance inspection,

signed up with maintenance agreements is that they go to the top of the list. If you call us and your unit is down, and you are already on a plan, you are our priority.”

Preventing problems before they arise is ideal, and smart home and business owners rely on preventative maintenance plans to keep their systems working at peak efficiency and to ensure that should any problems arise, they are dealt with swiftly.

Of course, maintaining your system is in your best interest, but it also might be a requirement of your equipment’s warranty. Most manufacturers require annual maintenance and records to provide warranty coverage, and some require proof of regular preventative maintenance plans and services.

“If you are part of a yearly maintenance program, not only do you get us out twice annually (once in the spring and once in the fall) to maintain your system during the year, but should we have to come out at any other time during the year for service, you get up to 15% discount on parts and labor every time we come out, and priority service,” Carnes says. “We offer service 24 hours a day!” What priority service means for customers PeregrineHeating.com • 574-935-4634

“Not following the maintenance schedule might be enough to void some warranties,“ says Carnes. “We recommend maintenance in the spring to get ready for the summer, and again in the fall to prepare for winter. It’s important to maintain the heating system, too. Our annual maintenance contracts offer coverage for both at one low price.” Comfort Zone

Save Money With an Energy Review From Huntington How to Build Your Plan

P

roperly sealing and insulating your home can be an easy way to increase comfort, save money on energy costs, protect your family’s health and increase the energy efficiency of your home.

According to the Department of Energy (DOE), a typical U.S home has over ½ mile of gaps and cracks. Your hard-earned dollars flow out through those cracks around the windows, doors and electrical outlets. We all want to have comfortable, healthy homes and we definitley want to save money on energy costs, but how do we do it? It starts with a proper diagnosis of your home’s energy “health”.

He will check your appliances and HVAC equipment for energy efficiency and evaluate the level of insulation in your walls and attic. He will also take the time to see what comfort and cost concerns you have. Next, he puts together a detailed report that shows you the problem areas in your home and prescribes specific steps you can take to solve problems. Let’s take a look at some of the typical problems found in a home and how to solve them.

When you go to the doctor, the nurse measures your blood pressure, temperature and collects other vital information. A good doctor will then take time to interview you in order to make a proper diagnosis. Once the doctor has diagnosed the problem, then the doctor can prescribe the right treatment to help solve it.

Diagnosing the energy health of your home follows a similar approach.

260-356-0186

It all starts with an energy assessment. A certified building energy analyst will visit your home and conduct a blower door test and use other tools like an infrared camera, or an air leak detector (smoke pencil) to locate gaps, cracks and leaks in your home.

Major energy loss Areas in The Average Home Air Sealing

The DOE estimates that 20-40% of the money an average American family spends on heating and cooling their home each year is wasted through uncontrolled air leakage, insufficient insulation and failing duct work. It’s no surprise then that air sealing is almost always a top priority. Air sealing is done with a two component closed-cell spray foam. (it is important that a close-cell foam is used to ensure proper sealing). Gaps and cracks around attic penetrations (plumbing, electrical, chimneys etc.) are sealed with this foam. Top plates (where the interior walls connect to the attic and basement rim joists (where the foundation connects to the floor of the house) are also major areas or air leakage and often need to be sealed. Weather-stripping around doors and windows are sealing wall outlets are also effective in reducing air leakage.

Attic Insulation

In addition to air sealing, proper levels of insulation are needed. It might surprise you to know that most homes in the United States are under-insulated based on current DOE standards. How many inches of insulation do you have in your attic? What is the effective R-value (thermal resistance) of that insulation? A certified building energy analyst can help you determine if more insulation is needed.

Duct Sealing

According to ENERGY STAR, about 20 percent of the air that moves through your duct system is lost due to leaks and poorly sealed connections. While some ducts may not be accessible since they are behind walls or in floors, all exposed ducts in a non-conditioned space may be improved by using a duct sealant. Mastic is the type of sealant preferred instead of the foil tape that is often seen on duct connections.

Mechanical Ventilation

You may be wondering if a house can be too tight. We certainly need fresh air in our homes. Using a blower door to test the leakiness of the house while performing mring air sealing can ensure that proper ventilation is present in the home. A better solution, however, may be the introduction of mechanical ventilation. Mechanical ventilation, as opposed to random air leaks in the house, ensures the right amount of air exchange year-round under all conditions. Mechanical ventilation can also be used to control the quality of air passing through the home for better health. The basic rule of thumb in building science is ‘seal tight; ventilate right.’

High Efficiency Heating & Cooling Equipment

In addition to improvements to the building shell, attention should also be given to improving the efficiency of your heating and cooling system. How old is your furnace, boiler and air conditioning system? What was its rated efficiency when it was installed? What do you think its efficiency is now? For furnaces, consider a sealed combustion, variable blower system with an Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) of at least 95 percent for greater safety and higher efficiency. If you live in a hot climate and have an older air conditioning system, chances are good that replacing your system with a new, energy efficient model will pay for itself in energy savings. The most efficient units on the market have Seasonal Energy Efficient Ratings (SEER) of 18 or more. You may also want to consider a heat pump or a geothermal heat pump depending on the climate and utility/fuel rates where you live.

REPAIR or REPLACE?

T

he air conditioning unit outside of your home works hard day in and day out to keep your family cool. Just like every other bit of technology in your life, your air conditioner accumulates wear and tear every day from casual use. If you are having some problems finding AC repair, Huntington leaves you with many choices. Find the best AC repair Huntington has to offer, and make some repairs on your AC unit this year. There is a good chance that installing a new air conditioning system will end up costing you less in the long run. You can decide whether you are going to repair your current unit or replace it. Here are some tips to help you figure out what the future of your air conditioner is.

Here are some tips to determine the future health of your air conditioner:

The first thing that you are going to want to look into is what the difference in cost is 18

between having your current AC repaired or having a brand new one installed. If the cost of fixing your expensive home appliance is close to your quote for a new installation, the replacement option is a better choice.

Age is Often the Determinant

On the other hand, with a newer air conditioner that requires just a simple fix that is low in cost, you will find it more beneficial to just keep what you have and complete the small repair. When it comes to an older air conditioner though, the improvement on energy efficiency alone can quickly offset the price paid for a new system. Keep this in mind when trying to choose between an AC repair or an AC replacement.

The General Rule of Air Conditioner Efficiency

The rule of thumb for trying to decide, based on the age, is if the system is around two years old, there is a good

chance repairs will be beneficial. An air conditioner’s lifespan is around eight years. If yours is around that age, replacement is what you are looking for. When it comes to air conditioners that are about four years old, it is possible for the decision to go either way.

Get Rid of Faulty Systems

If your air conditioner has done nothing but give you problems since it was installed, it could save you future headaches by just junking your constantly-failing air conditioning unit. This will save you more hassle than you know. Having a system that is reliable and efficient that also includes a yearly scheduled maintenance visit will prove an amazing choice that will continue functioning for years.

Rely on Newer Technology

The biggest advantage of a new AC unit is the likelihood that the new model is energy-efficient. It is not likely that the

air scrubber:

The Cleanest Air You’ll Ever Breathe

A

ccording to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the quality of indoor air can be two to five times (and even up to 100 times) more polluted than the worst outside air, which is why they’ve ranked indoor air pollution among the top five environmental dangers.

Poor air quality can cause a host of health problems, such as coughing, sneezing, eye irritation/itching, fatigue, dizziness, headaches and migraines, as well as congestion in the sinuses and chest. It can also exacerbate allergies and preexisting respiratory conditions, including dyspnea (difficult or painful breathing), rhinitis (inflammation of the nose, runny nose), epistaxis (nose bleeds), pharyngitis (sore throat), lung disease, and asthma or worsening asthma.

20

Comfort Zone

Most if not all of these issues can be controlled or even eliminated by significantly improving the quality of the air in your home. Don’t assume it’s fine because it very well may not be. Ignoring this puts not only your health at risk, but the health of your entire family, including pets. So what can you do to improve your indoor air quality? Most people have some sort of air purifier, whether it’s part of your air duct system or portable, that uses a filter (usually multiple ones), electrical attraction, oxidation, or a combination of these. Air purifiers using these technologies, however, often leave much to be desired when it comes to actually improving your air quality. Enter the Air Scrubber Plus, a seamless, fully integrated 24/7 home air purification system. It makes cleaning surfaces,

mopping up offending odors, and reducing harmful airborne contaminants as simple as turning on your furnace, fan, or air conditioning system. The Air Scrubber Plus also freshens, purifying the air in your home while reducing strong odors such as those from cigarette smoke, bacteria, pets, and cooking by naturally absorbing the particles that keep those odors lingering. This allows you to spray and scrub surfaces far less, and odors won’t simply be disguised with toxic chemicals—they’ll be eradicated. Additionally, the Air Scrubber Plus purifies your air. Unlike air filters that are passive, Air Scrubber Plus actively treats the air by continually sending out ActivePure scrubbers throughout your home to greatly reduce chemicals, dangerous contaminants, mold, odors, and pollutants in the air.

HuntingtonHeating.com • 260-356-0186

The peer-reviewed ActivePure technology was derived from an air purifying system designed by NASA for the International Space Station. It’s 50 times more powerful than the average HVAC filtration system and can reduce up to 99.9% of the harmful contaminants throughout your home. The way it works is through specialized germicidal UV light waves along with a proprietary catalytic process that creates enviroscrubbing molecules of oxygen and hydrogen, just like in nature. The key components of the Air Scrubber Plus are the honeycomb surface and UV light. The surface, which is coated with a titanium oxide and a proprietary formulation of reactive metals, creates a catalytic reaction that generates charged clusters of hydrogen and oxygen. The Air Scrubber Plus will improve your environment, and therefore your overall

health. Many of the health issues mentioned earlier will resolve, as the Air Scrubber Plus reduces harmful airborne toxins. It reduces black mold by up to 99.9%, MSRA Superbug by 99.8%, Avian Flu by 99%, Staph and Strep by 98.5%, and E. Coli by 98.1%. Tom Lozano, Executive Director at Air Scrubber Plus, has seen extraordinary results over the company’s eight years. “Every time we do a test at a school or a business where they keep track of attendance, we see a significant drop in absences due to sickness, up to 80 to 90 percent,” he says. Air Scrubber plus has done two major studies, both peer reviewed, and they’ve corroborated what Lozano claims. What’s more, the Air Scrubber Plus extends the life of your existing heating and air conditioning system by trapping dirt, dust,

PeregrineHeating.com • 574-935-4634

and other debris before it enters through the filter, which can damage the coils and blower that keep your system running effectively. A protected HVAC system can last up to 15 years or more at peak efficiency. This will save you money on your utility bills and reduce the need for expensive service calls. An unprotected system will become dirty, causing it to break down in as little as five years. A professional heating and cooling technician can easily install the Air Scrubber Plus. A standard unit covers up to 3,000 square feet when operating and begins working at once. The unit is not visible inside your home—a small 4” square cut is made into your existing duct work and the unit is mounted directly above your HVAC’s air handler. Once that is done, you’re on the way to breathing the cleanest, freshest air of your life.

SURGE PROTECTION:

THE DESTRUCTIVE POWER OF SURGES

by Nate Freyburger

P

ower surges occur within a fraction of a second, but during that time they can cause thousands of dollars worth of damage to the electronics in your home. Anything that’s hooked up to a power source is at risk for being fried when power surges strike – and they happen a lot more than you think. We’ve all experienced a sudden, unexpected power outage. Afterward, things typically turn back on as normal. But if a power surge makes it to your computer, TV, air conditioner, or any other electronic device, it may never turn on again, and you’re stuck having to replace it. Power surges are responsible for hundreds of millions in property damage every year, and most insurance companies will recommend whole-house surge protection, coupled with localized surge protector strips, to safeguard the appliances in your home. Many people will buy surge protection strips and plug expensive electronics into them, believing they provide a shield against power surges; unfortunately power strips can’t stop large surges. Instead of relying on localized power strips that only a few devices can plug into, a whole-home surge protector connects to the electrical panel, guarding everything that’s connected to the home’s power supply. These devices will 22

Comfort Zone

protect against surges that originate from both inside and outside the home – yes, surges can start from indoors. When many people think of power surges, they assume they are always the result of a lightning strike. However, they can originate from any malfunctioning appliance or other accident inside the home, and cause a chain-reaction that could wreak havoc on anything that’s plugged into an outlet. Additionally, it is possible for a power surge to come through a wire that isn’t connected to your home’s electrical system. For complete protection of everything in the home, devices that guard against surges coming through the cable and telephone lines are a good idea. But admittedly, most surges will come through the home’s electrical systems, making the whole-house model that attaches to the breaker panel the most necessary of the bunch. Surge protectors come in a variety of options, offering a range of protection for different prices. Most are guaranteed to work for more than a decade. If your home doesn’t have one, it’s something you should seriously consider. You never know when lightning will strike, and the resulting damage could cost you a whole lot more than a surge protector. HuntingtonHeating.com • 260-356-0186

WHAT IS Blown-in Loose-Fill Insulation? by Clair Cameron

Blown-in loose-fill insulation works exactly like the name states; loose fiberglass strands are blown into empty spaces using pressurized air. This technique can put insulation anywhere, including cavities in walls or at the base of an unfinished attic.

B

lown-in loose-fill insulation is an easy and affordable way to save money on utility bills. If your home is more than 10 years old, there’s a good chance you don’t have enough insulation. Unfortunately, even newer homes may be lacking proper insulation due to builder shortcuts. No matter your situation, blown-in insulation can fill in the gaps where your home loses heat and cool air, keeping your family comfortable for less. Blown-in loose-fill insulation works exactly like the name states; loose fiberglass strands are blown into empty spaces using pressurized air. This technique can put insulation anywhere, including cavities in walls or at the base of an unfinished attic. It’s also useful for filling in irregularly shaped areas that other insulation misses, some of which could be letting air pass through.

devise proper workarounds. Still, even with a service call, installing blown-in insulation is relatively quick and painless. “In many cases, we can completely re-insulate your attic in a few hours, immediately improving your home’s comfort, efficiency and even its resale value,” says Bob. “Because the product is blown into place, you get complete coverage — even around pipes and outlets, where other types of insulation won’t fit. And because the installation process traps millions of tiny air pockets between the pieces, you can usually achieve greater insulation value than traditional batt insulation can provide.”

If you see energy bills rising or you feel drafts around the house, chances are good that something isn’t as insulated as it could otherwise be. The first place to look for escaping air is the attic, where the thickness of insulation on floors and walls can determine if you have enough material in place. A professional can do this fairly easily, and will likely check your status before installing any insulation in the home. After that, crevices and hard-to-reach places should also be examined for spots where warm and cool air could be escaping outside. Blow-in insulation improves the energy efficiency of your home by bolstering what you already have and filling in gaps everywhere else. This whole idea of shooting fiberglass strands out of a pressure cannon may sound sloppy, but it’s actually a very clean process. Insulation in your home is only going to be visible where it should be, safe from pets and children who may unknowingly put it in their mouths. Additionally, blown-in fiberglass poses little environmental risk and much of it is made up of recycled materials. For a full list of benefits, ask a professional insulation installer. “There’s very little downside to using this stuff,” says Bob. “The machines we have nowadays leave no messes at all. There’s no overspray, leftover powdery residue – nothing. And since homeowners could see savings almost immediately, there’s no reason not to at least have your home checked to see if additional blown-in insulation could help.” Huntington Heating & Cooling Inc. and Peregrine Heating & Cooling recommends Owens Corning insulation. For questions or to schedule a service call, contact Huntington today at 260-356-0186 or 574-935-4634.

“The advantage of blown-in material is that it conforms to the space and shape of the area it’s in, and it fits like a glove,” says Bob Zahm, President of Huntington Heating and Cooling Inc. “It’s really cool, efficient stuff.” If you’re thinking about installing blown-in insulation yourself, think again. Blown-in insulation should only be put in place by a professional who can properly check for dangers, such as electrical wires, and 24

PROTECT YOUR FAMILY AND HOME FROM DAMAGING AIR WHOLE-HOME HUMIDIFIER & DEHUMIDIFIER SOLUTIONS AUTOMATICALLY DELIVER THE PERFECT AMOUNT OF MOISTURE & DRYNESS TO YOUR HOME Stop Mold in its Tracks

Mold and mildew reside where it’s moist: shower curtains, windowsills, air conditioning ducts, and sinks. In homes where humidity is very high, mold can even form on furniture or in carpets. While it’s gross to look at, mold and mildew can also cause issues with breathing for those who suffer from allergies or asthma. A dehumidifier makes it more difficult for mold to thrive by cutting back the humidity it needs to flourish.

Improve Your Health

It isn’t just mold and mildew that thrive in a moist environment. Other allergens and disease-causing bacteria love places that are wet. Dehumidifiers help to reduce the number of these pathogens, too, keeping the air you breathe cleaner and healthier.

Dust-up the Dust Mites

These tiny critters are so small that you can’t even see them without a microscope. They live in your bed linen, curtains, carpets, floor mats, furniture, and pillows. They literally get nourishment from the moisture that gets trapped in random areas of the home, and from there they multiply. Dehumidifiers help to keep their numbers in check by keeping things dry.

Protect Your Belongings

Aprilaire Whole-Home Dehumidifiers are located out-of-sight and out of your way with quiet operation, hassle-free maintenance and up to four times more energy efficiency than the leading portable dehumidifier.

aprilaire.com

Certain electronics, books, clothes, paintings, posters, and even some foods can become damaged by moisture. The things you own will last longer if the humidity levels in your home are under control. Controlling excess moisture in your home brings benefits that expand beyond mold control. Dehumidification is an easy and relatively inexpensive way to improve air quality, bolster your health, and protect your possessions. Dehumidifiers come in a range of sizes from small one-room units to whole-home systems; the sizes are based on the system’s ability to remove moisture from the air. Regardless of what your needs are, there’s bound to be a system out there that’s perfect for you.

Heaters By Marge McCarthy

W

e have all heard people boast about having the same water heater forever, and they typically say that it “still runs like a champ,” but, of course, that’s only until it doesn’t. No hot water heater has an unlimited lifespan. The lifespan of a water heater depends on both the quality of the appliance, and the quality of the water running through it. Areas with hard water or areas with humid climates may have to replace a water heater more often. Don’t be faced with making the decision on your next water heater when in crisis mode. The options for heating water have become more varied than ever before. The new high-efficiency models save on energy, and incentives from area utility companies, and possible manufacturer rebates, make it worthwhile to do your homework in advance. Research your options on water heaters in advance, talk to a trusted advisor, and learn about pricing and options.

Replace or Repair

Water heaters are the quiet background worker in any house, getting a constant workout and always expected to perform, until they don’t. If your water heater is more than 10 years old, leaks around the base of the tank or works erratically or not very well, it probably needs to be replaced. In any case, make sure that an electrical problem, such as a blown fuse or tripped breaker, is not the reason for the unit failing. Before making any repairs, or purchasing a new water heater, check the nameplate on the side of your current unit. Here you will find helpful information including the tank capacity, insulation R-value, installation guidelines, working pressure, model and serial number. If you have an electric water heater, the nameplate will also list the wattage capacity and voltage of the heating elements. This 26

information will serve as the starting point in your search for replacement or for parts. If you choose to replace an electric unit for a gas unit-or vice versa, a professional will need to be contracted. Either way, a professional contractor can provide a variety of options that will help you make your decision, based on your needs. They will know how to get the job done quickly while meeting required building safety codes. Installing a water heater, especially when it requires changing the power source, is not a do-it-yourself project. It requires the correct tools and appropriate skills.

Conventional vs. Tankless Water Heaters

Conventional Water Heaters – Most common size for homes is 40 or 50 gallons, but conventional units can range in size from 2.5 gallon to 70 or more gallons for a home, depending on dimensions of the area where it will be placed. Keep in mind that these units continually heat the entire tank of water to a consistent temperature, so they are constantly run.

Tankless or On-Demand Water Heaters

These units do not store hot water, so energy to heat the water is not used until there is a demand for hot water. Tankless water heaters turn off when demand is no longer needed, so no water is being heated all day and night, or while you are away. Instead, the water passes through the unit, over a series of coils that quickly heat the water to be delivered. A tankless unit is usually more energy-efficient than a traditional storage tank water heater. Whole-house tankless systems are powerful enough to provide hot water for your entire home. Compact units are also available and designed to work in a specific segment of the home, nearest the area of use. HuntingtonHeating.com • 260-356-0186

Things to Look for in a Home Comfort System When it’s time to replace your home comfort system, it’s important to consider what a newer system can offer. Here are seven items to consider when purchasing an HVAC system:

RELIABILITY

1

Chances are, your heating and cooling system is the most expensive equipment you will purchase for your home. That’s why it’s important to choose proven products from a reputable manufacturer.

EFFICIENCY

2

A new ENERGY STAR®-labeled system, when properly sized and installed, can save you up to 30% on your annual heating and cooling costs.* Plus, it may qualify you for utility rebates** in certain regions.

3 CONSISTENT TEMPERATURES 4

Air conditioners can produce sounds as high as 80 decibels. Look for technologies and features that help keep operating sound at a comfortable level.

5 PROPER AIRFLOW 6

To maintain proper moisture levels in your home, choose a thermostat that controls both temperature and humidity.

QUIET OPERATION

BALANCED HUMIDITY

HEALTHY AIR

7

With a typical furnace or single-speed air conditioner, indoor temperature can vary as much as seven degrees from the thermostat setting. A properly installed programmable thermostat gives you the assurance of precise temperature control*.

A typical furnace motor runs at one speed and circulates a constant volume of air, so it responds to changing comfort demands by repeatedly cycling on and off. This frequent cycling increases air stratification and stagnation. For optimal air circulation, choose a variable speed model. One of the best ways to combat indoor pollution is to attach an air cleaner to your furnace or air handler. That way, you can have peace of mind knowing your system is working to capture small contaminants in every room of your home. * Source: www.energystar.gov

hen you purchased your new air conditioning system it came with a manufacturer’s warranty, and you should have received a copy. That paperwork contains the manufacturer’s terms and conditions for your warranty. If you cannot find your paperwork, please do not hesitate to call our customer service department, and we will be happy to assist you. Manufacturers are beginning to enforce, with greater regularity, the terms and conditions within your paperwork. These changes may affect you. • Most manufacturers allow you to transfer warranties to the new owner upon the sale of your property for a small fee, and within 30 days of closing. • Manufacturers are now requiring the use of OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) parts. At the moment, there are thousands of possible OEM parts for any of the multiple manufacturers, which makes using and obtaining parts a difficult situation. The effect is that we will no longer be able to use generic truck stock parts. Although these changes are difficult, we make it our priority to bring you comfort as quickly as possible. • Manufacturers only cover work performed during normal business hours. • Manufacturers now require yearly maintenance by an authorized dealer/ servicer in order to keep a warranty in good standing. If you are not currently having maintenance done on your equipment at least once a year, contact an authorized servicer in your area as soon as possible. We want to thank you for choosing Huntington Heating & Cooling Inc. and Peregrine Heating & Cooling. If you have any questions related to your warranty, please do not hesitate to call us.
