Through government assisted research and industry experience, the cost of generating geothermal power has decreased by 25% over the past two decades. The average home installation costs from $20,000 to $25,000.

ou have very likely come across geothermal energy in your lifetime or maybe you’ve seen the photos of frosted-headed Japanese macaques relaxing in the hot springs in Nagano, Japan. Maybe you’ve visited Yellowstone National Park and have seen the hot mud bubbling, and Old Faithful spewing? Perhaps you’ve vacationed in Arkansas and luxuriated in a Hot Springs spa? Geothermal energy is a power generated from natural steam, hot water, hot rocks, or lava in the Earth’s crust. About 20 percent of this energy comes from the original formation of the planet and 80 percent from radioactive decay of minerals. How do geothermal systems work in nature? Temperatures at the core–mantle boundary may reach over 7,200 °F and flows continuously outward. Think: volcanoes, lava . . . Hawaii. The heat however, usually remains below the Earth’s crust, heating nearby rock and water—sometimes to temperatures as hot as 700°F. When the earth heats the water, hot water or steam can be trapped in permeable and porous rocks under a layer of waterproof rock, and a geothermal reservoir can form. Most hot 6

water stays deep underground, trapped in cracks and porous rock. People from Paleolithic times used hot springs for bathing, warmth, cleansing, and also used minerals in the water as a source of healing. The oldest known hot spring pool was built in China during the 3rd century BC, and the ancient Romans used hot springs water for public bath houses. In 14th Century France, in the spa town of Chaudes-Aigues, people used geothermal water to not only heat their spas but also their houses. The earliest industrial exploitation of geothermal energy began in 1827, with the use of geyser steam to extract boric acid from volcanic mud in a dry steam field in Larderello, Italy. Prince Piero Ginori Conti tested the first geothermal power generator in July 1904, at Larderello, again, where he built the first geothermal power plant in 1910. The geothermal heat pump came into implementation around the late 1940s, making it possible to heat the Commonwealth Building in Portland, Ore., in 1946, and the first residential open loop version in Ohio in 1948. Ten years later New Zealand produced

a geothermal energy plant, the first and only one since Larderello. In the early 1970s, Sweden implemented geothermal technology as a popular source for energy. Today, these systems can be installed in homes.

Geothermal energy:

• Is available everywhere for community district heating, space heating, spas, industrial processes, desalination, and agricultural applications. • Is a renewable resource because the heat emanating from the interior of the Earth is essentially limitless and continuous. • Is a resource that will never freeze. • May release greenhouse gases in power plants that are harmful, but can be contained with vents that trap the gases. Therefore, it has the potential to help mitigate global warming, and replace the use of fossil fuels. • Can reduce electricity usage. The electricity, which powers geothermal heat pumps only collects, concentrates, and delivers heat, not produces it. Compared with other heating and

cooling systems, GHPs reduce electricity 30-60 percent. • Can help save on utility bills. This includes up to 80 percent in HVAC costs. A WaterFurnace geothermal system offers a 400 percent improvement in energy efficiency compared to high efficiency natural gas furnace systems. Additionally, the WaterFurnace system controls humidity and typically lasts over 20 years. A geothermal system uses a series of underground pipes called a “loop,” which are buried between 10-300 feet, where the earth’s temperature remains constant. These loops lay in 100-400 foot trenches, if installed horizontally and if space is available, or vertically, if not. The earth loop eliminates the need for fossil fuels. Also, they can be hidden under a landscaped area, a field or parking lot, etc. These heat pumps pull heat from the Earth and distribute it through a conventional duct system or a hot water tank. To cool, the system extracts heat from the building and pumps it into the earth loop, reversing the system.

When researching for a company, the home or business owner should request an experienced, qualified mechanical contractor who has been installing geo systems for many years, according to Tom Gordon, owner of Gordon Air Conditioning in Okaloosa/Walton County, Florida. “Look for the best contractor first,” he says. “The best home comfort system will leave you unsatisfied if installed incorrectly.”

hat began humbly in the 1950s as a small family-run business is today, more than a half century later, a fixture in Huntington, Indiana; a name locals know and a business with a reputation as being successful and a champion for its community. Huntington Heating & Cooling is far more than just a livelihood for owners and employees, it’s a way of life – serving, servicing and giving back to its neighbors and a reputation for excellence has been its hallmark since the beginning.

The Beginning

There’s a story about the offer of a trade: a donkey for a bottle of propane gas. We’ll get back to that. Leo and Harriet Zahm had a small garden business in the early 1950s but Leo, who could “fix almost anything,” wanted to take on something new. Though the hard-working couple would keep the gardening business as a seasonal enterprise, they purchased a small Market Street propane company in 1956. The couple, who worked “247,” moved the operation to their own property and installed four large propane tanks with a dock near their house for filling smaller tanks. In 1959, they began to grow and branch out to include furnaces, sold from the front room of their home. “It was truly a Mom and Pop business,” said son Bob Zahm, now owner of the business – Huntington Heating and Cooling -- begun by his parents. “They worked 24 hours a day, seven days a week. But they did add help as the business grew.” Oh and about that donkey. The story Bob tells is that one customer wanted to exchange a tank of propane for a donkey. 8

It didn’t work out though, sadly for young Bob who would have enjoyed that donkey. “Dad did not want to have to take care of the animal when the novelty wore off,” Bob says. The business was very successful and grew quickly, although Leo and Harriet never advertised. “Word of mouth made the business successful,” Bob says. In 1963, the couple sold the LP business to Skelly Oil Co., but remained in the heating business. It was that year they changed the name of the company to Huntington Heating. Three years later, in 1966, son, Richard Zahm purchased the business, changing the name to Dick’s Home Improvements. Oil heating repair and service was added in 1974. In 1978, Bob and his wife Leslie, purchased the business and changed the name to Huntington Heating & Cooling, Inc. in 1987. The company was doing groundbreaking work in the 1980s. Its first geothermal system with ground loop was installed in 1984 and today geothermal is a very large division within the company.

Accolades and awards

In 2000 and 2001 Bryant recognized HHC with a Medal of Excellence award for best business practices. In 2009, Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels recognized HHC with the ‘Half Century Award’ for contributions to the community and an impressive more than half-century in business. In the spring of 2010, The Geothermal Heat Pump Consortium recognized HHC as one of six companies nationwide that exemplifies the geothermal industry. In October of 2010, HHC reached an agreement with Matt Peregrine Heating & Air Conditioning to purchase the business and changed the name to Peregrine Heating & Cooling in Plymouth, Indiana.

A little Peregrine history is in order

Matt Peregrine felt bad about all the customers he’d been servicing for years when the company he worked for, Mayer Plumbing & Heating, abruptly went out of business. Matt, who had more than 13 years of HVAC experience, 11 of those years spent working with Mayer, just couldn’t walk away from the work and the customers he’d come to know like old friends. Matt, a North American Technician Excellence and Environmental Protection Agency-certified professional, said at the time in newspaper accounts that he felt a certain loyalty to those customers and knew what he had to do: start his own business. So with his strong faith in God and determination to work hard, he started Matt Peregrine Heating and Air Conditioning LLC in 2008. At the time, Matt, a Plymouth High School and Ivy Tech graduate, spoke in local newspapers about his values and how they relate to his business: “I can only take credit for treating my customers as I feel that God would want me to. As a result, I have had some success. 8 patties hash brown potatoes 1 pound cubed ham 16 ounces shredded cheddar cheese 7 eggs 1 cup milk ½ tsp salt ½ tsp ground mustard

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Then place the potato patties in the bottom of a greased 13 x 9 inch pan. Add ham and cheese to the top of the patties. ou might not realize this, but your home is essentially a Petri dish for dust, dander, mold, and micro-organisms. Dust mites, mold, and fungi all use your living space to multiply and spread, and pollen and dander builds up by the minute. Their presence can be reduced (and sometimes even prevented) through the use of modern technology and an up-to-date maintenance plan of your air conditioning/heating equipment. Air Quality affects quality of life—if you have a buildup of particles in your air, you can expect to lose sleep, have 12

difficulty breathing, nasal congestion, and sometimes worse. Humidity and other factors such as leaks in your ducts can bring in outside particles like pollen and dust, and those things add up over time. If you don’t maintain your systems, the air you breathe inside your house might be filled with more pollution than the air you breathe outside! Pets have an enormous impact on your indoor air quality too—dogs, cats, birds, anything living in your house will impact your air quality. People can still have pets and have good air quality, but there is always going to be an ongoing issue with dander with most pets. Pet ownership doesn’t mean you are stuck with bad air, but people with birds should be especially observant of their air quality. Birds are the worst offenders when it comes to dander, dust, and particles in the air. Making sure your house is sealed is also very important. Do you keep your windows open at night? Are you especially fond of keeping your screen door open? Also, do you know how well your windows are insulated and your door jams sealed? Keeping a tight seal on all the access points in your house is very important for your air quality because it reduces the potential threats from outside of your home, and allows you to sort through the possible offenders. Different people often have widely varied reactions to dander, pollen, and dust, so using the process of elimination can be a very useful tool in discovering the cause of one’s particular ailment due to air quality hazards. In addition to your pets affecting air quality, you must also be aware of the many micro-organisms that occupy our homes. Many of these organisms live out their lifespan unbeknownst to their human neighbors, and we don’t even see them until they turn to dust. There are, however, less innocuous microorganisms, species of mold and fungi whose mere presence in your home can be hazardous or even deadly. To prevent problems, it’s important to regularly check on your systems to see if they are performing how they should. Don’t assume everything is okay with your system because you have cold and hot air when you want it. Indoor air quality isn’t determined by air temperature. The ducts have to be regularly inspected to ensure that they are sealed and that they are maintaining the flow of air from one room to another. The drains have to be regularly checked and cleared of any obstructions. Everything adds up—the ducts, the air handler, the type of pets you have, how often you perform maintenance on your system, what type of equipment you use, and what steps you are taking to prevent problems.

uctless mini-splits, or duct-free HVAC units can be a useful alternative to cool and heat homes and businesses. Coming in a variety of sizes, and with the capability of controlling the air temperature in individual zones of a building or home, they offer both economic and environmental advantages. They’re perfect for residential and commercial consumers alike since they offer a unique way to save energy by only cooling areas that are presently being occupied. Duct-free systems, as the name implies, have no ductwork, and consist of an outdoor condenser and an indoor airhandling unit. These are linked together with tubing that houses the power cable, refrigerant, and a drain for condensation. In many ways, they operate in a manner quite similar to a standard air conditioning system. Duct-free systems can also help to keep your home safer because only a small hole is needed for the tubing to pass through the wall; whereas window-mounted and through-the-wall air conditioners, unfortunately, can provide an easy entrance for intruders. Because of the unique installation and placement associated with ductless mini-splits, not all air conditioning contractors are able to properly install them. While many consumers still have reservations about leaving the world of traditional duct air conditioners behind, they offer a huge cost savings for those on a budget.

Major energy loss Areas in The Average Home Air Sealing

The DOE estimates that 20-40% of the money an average American family spends on heating and cooling their home each year is wasted through uncontrolled air leakage, insufficient insulation and failing duct work. It’s no surprise then that air sealing is almost always a top priority. Air sealing is done with a two component closed-cell spray foam. (it is important that a close-cell foam is used to ensure proper sealing). Gaps and cracks around attic penetrations (plumbing, electrical, chimneys etc.) are sealed with this foam. Top plates (where the interior walls connect to the attic and basement rim joists (where the foundation connects to the floor of the house) are also major areas or air leakage and often need to be sealed. Attic Insulation

Matt Peregrine’s Commitment to Giving

iving back to the community is a very important part of Peregrine Heating & Cooling of Plymouth. For starters, in his personal life, Matt Peregrine and his wife are dedicated to service, especially to children. The couple has opened their home and their hearts over the years to children desperate for a stable, loving and nurturing home life. They have been foster, adoptive and therapeutic parents since 1999. And Matt Peregrine was named Volunteer of the Year in 2011 by the Marshall County 4-H Fair. Additionally, Matt has for years been committed to making a difference in the lives of young people by coaching youth sports. As he said in a newspaper story in 2008, “I had a little support growing up, so if I can provide” that same kind of support to help change a child’s life, he’s more than willing to help.

believe in giving back and do so in a number of ways including supporting vital local non-profit organizations and community efforts including ‘Shop with a Cop,’ – A Marshall County Christmas tradition where the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #195 raises money to take kids in need on a Christmas shopping trip. Peregrine Employees have also supported, donated to, and volunteered for numerous civic and charitable organizations like the local 4-H, the Marshall County Council on Aging, whose mission is to provide the Marshall County Community of older adults the opportunity to experience personal fulfillment and dignity by providing quality services which allows for their continued independence and mobility, Plymouth High School sports, Cancer Cure Plymouth Football Team, the Oregon-Davis girls basketball team, and the Color Run for Freedom Park, whose mission was to build a playground where differences disappear. as myriad more non-profit community and civic programs and events, all in an effort to give back. “The community has been so good to us, so annually we give back to charities or families,” Matt says.

Turning Tragedy to Triumph Though Giving

Peregrine has donated furnace and installations for several years to those in need through its annual ‘Give Back’ effort, part of the company’s Community Connections Program. In December of 2014, the Austin family’s furnace caught fire. A family of five -- James and Kristi, their two son’s and James’ mother – they were without heat and James has been fighting health issues that have left him unable to work with Kristi juggling two jobs to help keep their family afloat – they had no money to purchase a new furnace, much less the propane fuel to run it. Peregrine office manager Hollie Wenzel saw the family’s posts and pleas for help on social media and alerted Bob Zahm, company president. Bob acted quickly. The Austin family was chosen for Peregrine’s annual ‘Give Back Program.’ Bob replaced the furnace and had it installed at no cost to the family on a Saturday -- thanks to employees George Ernie and Brian Johnston. The company then created a ‘Give Forward’ fundraising campaign to help raise money from the community to help buy propane to help the family make it through the winter. That effort raised more than $150. All of these efforts demonstrate Peregrine’s commitment to its neighbors, the community and its philosophy of giving back.

hen you purchased your new air conditioning system it came with a manufacturer’s warranty, and you should have received a copy. That paperwork contains the manufacturer’s terms and conditions for your warranty. If you cannot find your paperwork, please do not hesitate to call our customer service department, and we will be happy to assist you. Manufacturers are beginning to enforce, with greater regularity, the terms and conditions within your paperwork. These changes may affect you. • Most manufacturers allow you to transfer warranties to the new owner upon the sale of your property for a small fee, and within 30 days of closing. • Manufacturers are now requiring the use of OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) parts. At the moment, there are thousands of possible OEM parts for any of the multiple manufacturers, which makes using and obtaining parts a difficult situation. The effect is that we will no longer be able to use generic truck stock parts. Although these changes are difficult, we make it our priority to bring you comfort as quickly as possible. • Manufacturers only cover work performed during normal business hours. • Manufacturers now require yearly maintenance by an authorized dealer/ servicer in order to keep a warranty in good standing. If you are not currently having maintenance done on your equipment at least once a year, contact an authorized servicer in your area as soon as possible.
