Exercise has long been shown to provide many health benefits. Many studies have found a link between genetics and exercise. Your genes can affect your chances of losing weight, having improved cholesterol levels, and other health benefits in response to exercise. BoostFit tests for a number of genes related to exercise and optimal performance.
Eating Behavior Traits Eating behaviors can have as much effect on health as our diet. Some of our behaviors are learned over time and some are influenced by our genetics. Through the BoostFit report, we describe certain genetic markers that are associated with eating behaviors. With this information, you and your physician can modify your lifestyle to help you achieve or maintain healthand wellness.
Metabolic Health Factors Being overweight or obese is linked to many health conditions. Obesity leads to negative impacts on a person’s metabolic system, such as decreased levels of HDL (good) cholesterol and elevated levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol, as well as elevated blood sugar and triglycerides. These adverse metabolic effects are precursors to metabolic syndrome, as well as health conditions such as coronary artery disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes.

Ultimate Frisbee Championships
Return to Sarasota
F
rom Oct. 19-22, the Premier Sports Campus at Lakewood Ranch will buzz with athletes battling for the USA Ultimate Club National Championships, the 49th annual celebration of “Ultimate Frisbee.” The team sport attracts millions of participants around the world, in part because of its simplicity. This year the Tampa Bay Ultimate is cohosting the championships with the Sarasota County Sports Commission. Ultimate Frisbee has its origins in the early 1900s when students began by playing catch with discarded pie tins. In 1955 Fred Morrison began marketing a plastic flying disc which he called the "Pluto Platter Putt-Putt". He sold the design to Wham-O in 1957 and the design was modified, the product renamed "Frisbee." Ultimate Frisbee emerged in New Jersey a decade later. Sarasota hosted the national championships from 2000 to 2012, now the championships are coming home to Sarasota. This year, organizers expect more than 1,300 adult amateurs competing in men’s, women’s and mixed divisions. For more information on the USA Ultimate Club 2017 National Championships, visit Play.USAUltimate.org. For information on Premiere Sports Campus in Lakewood Ranch, visit PremiereSportsCampus.com.

Restorative Yin Yoga
B
y holding yoga poses for 2-10 minutes and applying gentle pressure to the connective tissues, tension and tightness begins to ease and circulation to the joints and organs increases. That is the basis behind the new Yin Yoga series presented by Alli Koski at the Yoga Shack in Sarasota. The series will explore many shapes to target different parts of the body and organ systems. Exploring different body groups each session. Classes can be done individually, or as a complete series. October 8th will explore the hips and spine, while the November 5th session focuses on neck, shoulder and chest. December 3rd emphasizes hamstring and quads and January 7th centers on the infamous IT band and side bodies. Athletes and fitness enthusiasts are well suited to this series. “Practitioners often experience an overall increase in mobility to some degree after even just one class.” Proclaims the Yin Series instructor Alli Koski. Classes will be held the first Sunday of each month from 4pm to 5:30pm at The Yoga Shack, 423 Lemon Avenue, Sarasota. To sign up, or for more information, visit TheYogaShack.com.
Festivus for the Rest of Us
O
n October 14th, CrossFit Bradenton will be hosting the Festivus Games team competition. The Festivus Games motto, “Feats of Strength for the Rest of Us,” caters to CrossFit athletes who aren’t hard core fire-breathing bad asses. The first Festivus competition was held on April 30th, 2011. The concept was simple yet long overdue. Since novice and intermediate athletes make up 95% of CrossFitters, it made sense to have a competition designed only for them. No firebreather types allowed! The name comes from a well-known Seinfeld episode. If you’re not familiar with the episode where the made-up holiday Festivus is explained, you owe it to yourself to watch it. As the made-up holiday “Festivus” was created “for the rest of us” Festivus Games continues the tradition of a light-hearted spirit with “feats of strength for the rest of us.” Since the first competition with about 70 athletes Festivus Games has grown to over 16,000 athletes nationally in 2016. The team event is only in its second year, but makes for an interesting competition, with some twists that can only be done in teams. “When you compete in the Festivus Games you can expect to be challenged but you can also expect to have a lot of fun! Festivus Games really is the perfect venue for your first functional-fitness competition.” States CrossFit Bradenton Coowner Beth Vannata.
Eat the Most Delicious Things on Earth.

Next Generation Cryotherapy in Sarasota
W
hole body cryotherapy (WBC) is an established alternative to localized icing for illness, injury and inflammation. The benefits of WBC are myriad. And not just for professional or elite athletes, but for everyone and anyone who has completed an intense workout, suffers with arthritis, needs help with healing after surgery, suffered an injury, requires muscular pain relief from conditions including RA and tendonitis, is looking to improve mood, experience anti-aging effects, or needs help with weight loss, among many other benefits. Gym SRQ Fitness and Fuel has one of only ten whole body cryotherapy machines in the U.S. of its kind. Unlike other cryotherapy machines in the area, the state of the art Cryo Artic device does not expose the customer to nitrogen gas, but instead pushes breathable air into the chamber. It features an automatic adjustable window to provide comfort during treatment and even a port to plug your phone in to listen to your choice of music during treatment. “Most whole body cryotherapy units treat from the shoulders down and only measure the temperature of the nitrogen gas being pumped in to the unit, making it difficult to accurately measure the air temperature the customer is actually being exposed to.” States Bryan Lieberman of Gym SRQ Fitness and Fuel. Cryo Arctic represents the next generation of cryotherapy devices and is now available in Sarasota. This brand new state-of-the-art technology is available to all GYM SRQ members and guests. Gym SRQ Fitness & Fuel is located at 3530 Clark Road in Sarasota. They can be reached at 941-348-6377, or by visiting GymSRQ.com.
Healthier U Challenge Postponed
T
iming couldn’t have been worse for the initial run of the Healthier U Challenge. Irma appeared during sign up and many were without power for this local internet challenge. Great news for everyone interested in the 5-week challenge geared towards making healthier lifestyle choices. Registration has been extended to January 15th, and the Challenge will begin January 18th. The challenge is based upon some sensible and universal ideals: to prevent disease; to see people live healthier and fuller lives; to educate people about the benefits of eating whole foods and to change lifestyles in an enjoyable way. The 5-week challenge will help you monitor goals, diet and exercise online. Participants are provided with a meal plan and grocery list based upon the whole food program they choose. Nutritional education and weekly workouts are just part of the overall Challenge. Winners are chosen weekly and at the end of the challenge based on performance levels in diet compliance, workout performance, lifestyle choices and improvement. “Though I had been active my whole life, I struggled with ‘looking active’, physically. I had been Crossfitting five to six times per week for two years, and was eating what I knew to be a healthy diet, but I was frustrated with my physical progression. In January of 2016, I was introduced to this challenge. I committed myself to the diet and began shedding weight. I was eating more than in my previous diets and taking in more carbs, but after five weeks I had lost 11 pounds and a spark was lit. Now, 18 months later I am healthier than ever and 50 pounds lighter as I continue to follow the lifestyle.” Stated Alia White, a previous challenge participant from Bradenton. Anyone 18 or older is encouraged to be a part of the challenge just in time for New Year’s resolutions. For more information on the details of the challenge, visit fit941. com/2017/08/11/healthier-u-challengea-better-you-in-35-days/. To register, click on the Healthier U Challenge button at Fit941.com.

ecreased libido and erectile dysfunction are amongst the most embarrassing issues men can experience even though they are surprisingly, quite common. A study from 2006 estimated that around 36% of all men above 45 years of age experience a cluster of symptoms known as hypogonadism, or testosterone deficiency. Hypogonadism can be characterized not only by erectile dysfunction and reduced libido, but also weakness and decreased bone density, loss of body and facial hair, and increased body fat, fatigue and anemia. The normal levels of testosterone range between 300 and 900 nanograms per deciliter, but testosterone has been shown to reduce with age. Some men are at greater risk than others—hypogonadism odds are higher amongst people with hypertension, diabetes, obesity or prostate disease. Currently, the best way to tackle testosterone deficiency is testosterone replacement therapy. The aim of testosterone treatment is to restore the hormonal levels in the normal range. Testosterone is extremely important for the functioning of the entire body and most systems. Signs of Testosterone Deficiency Fatigue and low sex drive are usually the first sign of testosterone deficiency though the symptoms might often be subtle or unnoticeable at first. If you have made changes to your lifestyle such as exercising more often and improving your eating habits but you still notice these symptoms, you might be struggling with hypogonadism. Testosterone replacement therapy can help restore your Low-T levels and tackle the symptoms of testosterone deficiency, helping you regain your sex drive and function, boost your mood and improve your overall quality of life. To help men identify whether they may be suffering from low testosterone, Men’s Complete Health of Sarasota is offering a free hormone replacement therapy consult. For more information on low-T and hypogonadism, visit MensCompleteHealth.com or call 941-203-8944 to book a free consultation.

The Toughest Workout You’ll Ever Love W
e apologize for borrowing a line from the famous Peace Corps ad a few years back, but that twist of logic and truth just seems to fit F45 training so well!
Originating in 2014, this Australian workout system—45 minutes of intense cardio, strength and endurance exercise— is catching fire here in the United States, with two studios already open in Florida and two new ones about to launch here in 941 territory—Sarasota and Lakewood Ranch. Local franchise owner Lamar Miller spent time in Australia and experienced F45 training first-hand a few years ago. He really liked the varied mix of exercises—alternated all month long, as well as the team-building and inspirational coaching by the staff trainers. He said, “It’s a mix of high-intensity interval training, circuit training and functional training—something for everybody.” According to trainer Catrina Liott, each 45-minute session includes only 27 people so that the trainers can provide plenty of individualized attention to every participant. “We are here to motivate, educate and ensure everybody’s safe progress toward better fitness, and we make friends along the way,” she said. There are themes for each day, some of which have an emphasis on mimicking different sports movement such as swimming, fishing or boxing. This system has a successful track 16 FALL 2017

record for shedding pounds and adding lean muscle mass. The typical workout at F45 usually burns around 800 calories. According to F45’s own Web site, their Brooklyn Boxing session “puts your cardiovascular, strength, boxing, MMA, and martial arts to the ultimate test, while somehow finding time for a laugh.” The Flamingo Athletica workout is described like this: “Get leaner, faster and more agile in a 45-minute cardio session that will have you sweating and gasping for air. Meanwhile your now Zen-like mind will be wondering how the time went so quickly.” You won’t find a row of fancy machines at the 800 F45 facilities worldwide. They pride themselves on working with simple but proven workout devices such as jump ropes, weights, kettle balls and power bands. They also play a soundtrack of popular and energizing music, which sets just the right mood for a communal workout punctuated with groaning and laughing. Your monthly fee covers as many sessions as you want to attend. Showers are available for those who want to transition into work mode after a workout. Marianne O’Neil of Darwin, Australia, is one devoted fan of the F45 program. She said, “I’m a distance runner, yoga instructor, and always active in some way or another. F45 training has helped me improve in all aspects of movement in my life and given me the best results I’ve ever had! There are

TAKING UP THE CHALLENGE OF...
JUGGERNAUT X magine that instead of plugging along on a treadmill in the gym you are running up a warped wall like one of those ninja warriors on television. Or, instead of pushing yourself into downward facing dog in yoga class you are climbing up a salmon ladder. In December, you could be one of 100 athletes who gets to compete in JuggernautX, the first competition ever in Florida that combines elements of high intensity functional exercising, obstacle course racing and ninja warrior training in one hellacious competition.
I
A juggernaut is a large, destructive force that crushes whatever is in its path. JuggernautX is designed to test your ability to overcome that overwhelming force. JuggernautX will be the first competition in the 941 area that truly assesses the functional ability of athletes across different fitness planes. The event will have four stages. In each of the first 3 stages, only half of the competitors will move forward. The top three male and female athletes who perform the best in the four stages will win prizes and awards. The top competitor will be crowned the first ever JuggernautX Champion. Each stage will feature exercises common in functional fitness training like CrossFit, boot camp workouts and HIIT. This could be barbell, dumbbell or kettlebell movements, wall balls, pull ups, double unders and more. In addition, each stage will also feature ninja warrior obstacles that must be crossed, climbed, traversed or endured. These could be the monkey bars, heavy rope jumping, climbing walls, rope climbing, swinging from one apparatus to another, and the famous warped wall. Because it’s the first event of its kind in Florida, it is expected that a number of athletes who have competed in televised shows such as American Ninja Warrior and Spartan: Ultimate Team Challenge will attempt to master the four stages. The question is—can you beat them? JuggernautX was created by Dale Lively, owner of LIVE Training Center, and Jason Cross of Fit941 to highlight the convergence that is now taking place in these immensely popular sports. 18 FALL 2017
FIT941.COM
For example, in the 2017 CrossFit Games, which are the world championships for the sport, the competition featured an obstacle course event for the first time. It was amazing to see athletes who are among the fittest in the world struggle with portions of the course that required balance, finesse and climbing skills. Similarly, the finals for the latest season of American Ninja Warrior involved lifting heavy structures off of the ground and much more hand, arm and shoulder strength than ever before. It is clear that each of these workout regimes is borrowing elements from the other in order to bring the athletes to the next level. JuggernautX will test how well athletes from each of these sports does when faced with unfamiliar elements from an alternative sport. JuggernautX will begin at 8:00 am on Saturday, December 16, 2017. The competition will take place at LIVE Training Center, at 1731 12 St. E, Palmetto FL 34221. The owner of LIVE Training Center, Dale Lively, is an accomplished Obstacle Course Racing winner and Personal Trainer certified through the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM). His Palmetto facility has been featured in national media as a training center for the American Ninja Warrior television show. LIVE Training Center offers OCR and Bootcamp training for kids and adults of all ages and abilities.

Yoga
SHREDDING
A Total Fitness Regimen for Body and Soul By Norm Bower
or all its commonly accepted cerebral and physical benefits, yoga is still sometimes, somehow seen as the not-so-fun “odd man out” in the realm of physical conditioning. Too brainiac? Too stretchy? Too counter-culture?
F
Now, in this modern world of blended families, new-age fabric combinations and fusion food fads, the world is primed for Yoga Shred. This new fitness regimen includes the mental focus and stretching postures of yoga with some high intensity exercises and movements—all aimed at producing inner peace and a healthier, fit physique, (or let’s admit it--a hot bod). According to online instructors, Yoga Shred can be offered in 14-day or 21-day formats, alternating yoga and the high-intensity workout for six days, then a seventh day of rest (like the Good Book says). The yoga workouts are pretty much standard fare with emphasis on breathing technique, postures like “dog” and “cobra,” stretching arms, legs, torsos and core muscles, while all the time “mindfully exercising.”
22 FALL 2017
FIT941.COM
The shred part of the routine is more demanding on the muscles and cardio system. It incorporates either an upper body or lower body regimen of very active exercises for 10 minutes, repeated once or twice, depending on the participant’s level of fitness. Described by one trainer as “shock and awe” for your body, the bending, squatting, crouching and reaching movements will provide big-time cardio benefits. On “shred day” there is no other workout, and the yoga is on schedule the following day. Diet is also an important element in this fitness program. Without providing too many specifics, the promoters advise that diet is actually more important than exercise when it comes to fitness goals. If you plan to “rock your detox,” the quality of food doesn’t require more money, just wiser choices. Avoid carbs and sugar. Focus on plants. Find balance. Wine is on the approved list. Do your own homework about healthy food and include some “cheat meals” in your weekly menu to avoid any mental “punishment syndrome.” Don’t do radical cleanses. Basically, healthy in … healthy out.
While the Yoga Shred is not universally practiced, there are local yoga trainers who are offering their own version. Kelli Jaco at Soul Yoga in Sarasota said, “In my studio, I offer both yoga and fitness classes, as well as nutrition consultation. Pricing varies based on how in-depth of a program you are looking for.” She added, “My own training is a hybrid of boxing, yoga, running and resistance training. I am constantly mixing it up as I feel it is important to keep your body guessing! I eat clean most of the time. Anyone can do yoga and workout. And anyone can eat clean. This program is for all!”

Her other insights include, “Practicing yoga and eating healthy are two fantastic ways to not only shape your mind, but also your body. Physically, yoga works to elongate the muscles. It is also perfect for stretching muscles and preventing injury. When supplementing your yoga practice with the proper nutrition, you are giving your body an overall perfect combo!” Yolanda Nash operates Hot Yoga 4 You in Sarasota, where the spacious room, warm temperature (from infrared heating) and special air filtration system offer a unique environment for practicing yoga. “Our studio is a non-competitive atmosphere and beginners are welcome to any class,” she explained, “We don’t offer a special shred program but our yoga practice delivers so many benefits--flexibility, strength, focus, concentration. Clients come for weight loss and alleviate back pain and other physical injuries/ailments.” At Hot Yoga 4 You, classes are offered seven days a week and there is special introductory pricing for Florida residents. Her own specialized training involved more than 500 hours of working out to achieve certification. So the bottom line for those pursuing total fitness goals, such as a physique that is toned, lean, flexible and strong, a lot of trainers will explain that yoga alone isn’t enough. It’s good for slowtwitch muscles, stress reduction, moving, breathing and detox, but not so good for cardio and strong muscle development. Mixing it up with a few days of shredding may be your happy destiny! See you in the studio!
