Summer is our time as locals to enjoy our surroundings without the crowds and congestion season brings. Sure it’s a little hot and humid, but the gulf breezes, ocean, and summer rains make it more bearable. Once we get acclimated the morning run or bike ride isn’t really that bad. And the luke-warm waters of the gulf are still refreshing after a workout, or for an open water swim. Swimsuit season is upon us, but even if you aren’t in beach body shape it’s not too late to make positive changes in your life. Whether you need a major lifestyle change, or just need to tweak your routine, the Healthier U Challenge detailed on page 12 is an amazing tool for all of us. I participated in a similarly designed challenge this past spring and it brought my fitness to a new level. My diet, while generally healthy was holding me back more than I realized. I was so impressed by the results of the online challenge that I worked with the company to customize a 5 week program open to everyone. The challenge ties in local businesses with discounts and prizes to sweeten the rewards of your hard work. Businesses related to health and fitness are welcome to be a part of the challenge, and corporations interested in wellness for their employees will love this format. To participate in the Healthier U Challenge, visit Fit941.com beginning August 15th for more details and registration.

If you aren’t up for our 5 week challenge, take a look at our events or class calendar and try something new. I’m always amazed by the diversity of offerings we have in the area. If you can’t have some fun while getting or staying in shape you just aren’t looking hard enough. If you cycle, even just for casual exercise, be sure to read our article on finding the perfect fit (p. 14). I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen people riding in positions guaranteed to cause injury over time. Taking a moment to get professionally fitted to your bike can prevent knee, back, neck and other issues.

F45 Training Coming to Sarasota
F45, short for Functional 45, the latest group training concept from Australia, is coming to Sarasota in September. Glamour magazine’s Glamour team recently tested one of F45’s classes and rated it as one of the best and most fun new fitness classes to try now. The concept is simple: F45 studios all over the world offer a 45 minute high-intensity, circuit training workout class for studio members. They have developed 27 different 45-minute workouts, with more currently in development. Studios offer the same class at different times throughout the day. Every day throughout the week offers a different 45-minute workout. The workouts are created by the F45 Athletics and Peak Performance Department from a database of over 3,000 different exercises, so members never get the same workout twice. F45 is currently the second largest functional training network after Crossfit, and it was born out of the desire to bridge the gap between personal training and commercial gyms. The F45 fitness phenomenon has exploded across the globe, and in just three short years over 750 franchises have joined the fitness network in 26 countries. This F45 craze is growing faster than bunnies in the Outback! For a limited time, as part of their grand opening, you can register for two free weeks of classes online.
Eat the Most Delicious Things on Earth.
Fit 45 Sarasota will be located at 1900 Main Street in downtown Sarasota. For more information on their unique training classes, or to take advantage of their opening special, visit F45Training.com/Sarasota, or call 941-677-7212.

Healthier U Challenge A BETTER YOU IN 35 Days!
» by Norm Bower
ant to change your life for the better in only five weeks? Want to feel healthier, stronger, and more attractive? Want to be more focused, organized and alert? Want to take home some really nice prizes and make some new friends?
W
If you nodded your head to any or all of these questions, then you need to sign up for an exciting new fitness challenge program co-sponsored by Fit941 Magazine and an array of local sponsors: The Healthier U Challenge. This fitness program is designed for individuals or groups who are dedicated to some sensible and universal ideals: 12 SUMMER 2017
FIT941.COM
• to see people live longer, fuller and more active lives, • to see less disease in families • to educate people about the benefits of eating whole foods in order to be disease-free • to change lifestyles enjoyably with family, friends and community.
The Challenge will take place between Sept. 18 and Oct. 21.
During those five weeks, a whole lot of excited people will be taking initial measurements, keeping track of workouts, logging in nutritional efforts, and making lifestyle modifications. You
can do the program as an individual or coordinate a group (5-9 members, 10-19 members or 20-plus members). Maybe your office workers want to try this as a team, or your gym pals, or your neighborhood friends, or a book club, or members of your church. Use your imagination! The program is open to people 18 years and older, and there will be three divisions: Open, Masters (40-49) and MastersPlus (50 and over). The participants will also be “sorted” according to two basic diet paths—Classic and Macro Focus, and you select the group that’s best for you. Both are built on the same approved diet levels and same wholefoods-based nutritional philosophy. Members will be given a choice of three different levels of diet (Starter, Pro and Elite), which they can follow and switch between during the five weeks.
What’s expected?
Within the 5-week Healthier U Challenge, it is our goal to educate as many people as possible about creating a healthier lifestyle.
• Food database where participants can research the status of favorite foods to determine “allowed” or “not allowed” status. • Food summary chart that lists the foods they can eat during the challenge • Tracking of diet and goals • Q&A to help assist anyone in need.
Keeping score and earning prizes
There are prizes in both individual and team categories, based on performance levels in diet compliance, workout performance and improvement, and lifestyle focus. The contest rules on the Web site will provide details. Prizes include workout apparel, exercise equipment, dietary supplements, running shoes, exercise programming and more. In addition, there will be weekly raffles prizes for all participants. You can be a winner in many ways as part of the Healthier U Challenge! Alia White of Bradenton took part in the fitness challenge in 2016. She says she is so glad she did it, adding, “Though I had been active my whole life, I struggled with ‘looking active,’ physically. I had been Crossfitting five or six times a week for two years, and was eating what I knew to be a healthy diet, but I was still frustrated with my physical progression. In January of 2016, I was introduced to the paleolithic diet as part of a fitness challenge. I committed myself to the diet and began shedding weight, using a five-week plan. I eliminated grain, dairy, processed foods and additional sugar. Ironically, I was eating more than in my previous diet and taking in more carbs, but after five weeks, I had lost 11 pounds and a spark was lit! Now, 18 months later, I am healthier than ever and 50 pounds lighter as I continue to follow the lifestyle.”
HEALTHIER U CHALLENGE Signups begin online Aug. 15 at: fit941.com. If you have questions, email: jason@fit941.com.
• It will start with body weight/measurements. Within the first and last week, participants will be responsible for taking their body measurements and body weight. Also, although it is not required, there will be a body fat analysis procedure available. • Diet: You will log daily how well you ate for the day. This will help people hold themselves more accountable. • Goals: You will select five goals to focus on during the five weeks. • Lifestyle Focus: We will help you identify unhealthy habits and routines and help you develop alternatives for a healthier you. • Workouts: Assigned weekly • Each member will have access to his or her own personal challenge page, including: • 5-week meal-plan with grocery list • Dozens of additional recipes • A nutrition education blog, which is a valuable resource to learn new recipes, get advice from other participants, and share your ideas.
Ready, Set, Go! You can do your regular routine and slump along. Or you can shake things up as Alia White did with an intensive commitment to fitness and performance by taking part in this Healthier U Challenge. Talk to your family and friends. Challenge each other. Challenge yourself. Go to this link today and find out more details. A healthier you is just five weeks away! Sign up between Aug. 15 and Sept. 17 at Fit941.com.

CYCLIST’S QUEST:
Finding the Perfect Fit » by Norm Bower
n the 1970s, singer Freddy Mercury of Queen screamed a lyric, “Get on your bikes and ride,” which may have had a lot of different meanings to a lot of people. But let’s fast forward to our kinder, gentler and more physically fit era, and assume he really did want all of us to ride a bike— safely, efficiently and comfortably for years and years …
I
Nowadays, smart biking encouragement can come from genuine experts in the industry—like local bike shop owners Paul Tobio and Jerry Johnson. They took some time recently to offer great advice about fitting systems for bikes and riders. These high-tech and very valuable systems can ensure riders of positive outcomes on the road or the hills because they analyze the rider’s physique, the bike’s dimensions and 14 SUMMER 2017

the optimum settings for all the bike’s features. Tobio owns two Ryder Bikes stores (Bradenton and University Park) and has been involved in biking for 35 years. Along with four training programs, he has 11 years’ experience performing the “Retul” fitting system for customers. The two-hour analysis and bike adjustment includes a nine-point procedure with the rider’s physical assessment and three-dimensional digital mapping of the bike. Said Tobio, “A great fit will allow the rider to experience more comfort and better performance on his or her bike, or buy a new bike with full confidence in selecting the right model and size. We take client injury history into account during the pre-fit assessment and use that to tailor the bike to the rider during the fitting.” A follow-up session for tweaking results is usually conducted 30 days after the initial fitting. Recognizing the importance of health care expertise in this process, Tobio explained that his Retul training was coordinated with medical specialists and he gets advice from area orthopedists, podiatrists and chiropractors. One of Tobio’s customers described the value of a good fitting after he completed a triathlon, stating, “The bike fitting definite-
ly helped with the speed, comfort and endurance in the race. I’m really happy that I got the fitting done with you.” Along with wife Amy, Jerry Johnson owns and operates Endurance House bike shop in Bradenton. He has been enthusiastically involved with biking for over 30 years and will take part in the Wisconsin Ironman Triathlon this September. At Endurance World, they use the patented “Guru Fit System” to fit bike settings to riders. According to Jerry, “The computer-controlled motorized adjustment of handlebars, saddle, and angle allows instantaneous adjustments to be made while the rider is on the bike, pedaling, under a load. This means that you do not have to get off to make adjustments, allowing the rider the opportunity to accurately judge the difference between positions.” He added, “We start the bike fitting from scratch to find the best position balancing aerodynamics, comfort, and power. Once we have this position, we can simply press a button and the ‘Guru Fit’ bike moves to the position of the customer’s actual bike. This is often a very telling moment and in many cases, the customer is astonished that they were riding in the other position.”

This system takes 60 to 90 minutes to perform and all the data is saved on the shop computer so follow-up sessions take less time and include accurate prerecorded settings. Jerry says bike fitting is really essential for serious riders and even hobbyists because they will find more enjoyment, experience comfort according to their unique physical traits, and have the peace of mind that comes from knowing they are on the right bike. One customer thanked him for the “patience and expertise helping me get my bike dialed in.” With all this science and technology supporting successful bike riders, it’s time we all followed Freddy Mercury’s advice, so, “Get on your bikes and ride,” but be sure to get the right fit!

Baking with Protein Powder
Mouthwatering Creations that Build You Up » by Norm Bower
veryone knows that part of a healthy lifestyle is the nutritional component, and complementing a strong workout with the right foods is really important related to performance, recovery and appetite. In recent years, protein powder has become the darling of foodies, as well as exercise afficianados, in search of a tasty way to build a better body. It’s in protein shakes, muffins, pancakes, pizza, desserts, dips, cereals and more. Regular restaurants along with health-food establishments are paying attention to this important trend, and it is more and more common for bakers to prepare special items using

whey, pea, casein, soy and other varieties of protein powder. The most beneficial time for ingesting protein powder in any form is soon after a workout (a two-hour window) so your muscles can absorb the nutrients for growth and recovery. It also reduces the opportunity for muscle damage. With glycogen levels in your system reduced after a workout, it’s also a good idea to include some carbs in your recovery nutrition. Your insulin levels will be boosted and that will help your body with utilize the amino acids from the protein, and facilitate regrowth of your overworked muscles. It’s a win-win-win
for your biceps, your brain and your tummy! One very strong advocate for dietary protein enhancement is Shannon Illch, a competitive bodybuilder and the owner of Cornerstone Nutrition in Sarasota. Her food service creates, serves and delivers portion-controlled, high-nutrition meals to customers with busy schedules and serious fitness goals. In an average week, Cornerstone staffers will prepare 1,500 to 2,000 delicious meals with special attention to every nutrient group. People can choose from a menu that changes weekly with dishes like French toast with vanilla protein drizzle, “super food” chicken salad, red velvet protein waffle, and a turkey burger mixed with beets and other vegetables. Shannon and her chef, Ryan Kelly, continually tweak recipes and menus, subject to client requests and the latest nutritional research. She said, “When supplementing various forms of protein powder for flour in a recipe, the rule of thumb seems to be that a fourth of the flour can be substituted with powder. To do it in greater proportions risks making the finished product (cake, crust, bread) too rubbery.” The fact is, inserting protein powder will make a food healthier just by taking the place of a standard recipe’s high carb and fat ingredients. Many cookbooks also recommend adding a moisturizing element if you are going to insert protein powder in baked goods. Applesauce, yogurt, or fruit puree go a long way in making a powerful protein muffin a lot more appetizing.

FEEL THE
RESULTS!
Shannon said the best reason to take in the additional protein on a regular basis is to help maintain muscle mass. “This supplement to the diet will reduce deterioration and help people to feel full.” Protein powder can even be included in the recipe for doughnuts—which most nutritionists eye with a lot of suspicion in the traditional formula of sugar and flour. Local bake shops such as FiveODonutCo in downtown Sarasota are experimenting with protein powder in some of their recipes. It will be an exciting day when these frosted temptations can actually be part of your fitness regimen!
