JULY | AUGUST 2016
I was working in New York City on Sept. 11, 2001. It was a terrible day. I lost friends and colleagues on that awful day. But as thousands were running out of the World Trade Center, hundreds of first responders were running in. During the days, weeks and months that followed, there was such an incredible feeling of gratitude and pride and admiration for firefighters, EMTs, paramedics, and police – not just in the City, but worldwide. I used to walk from the train station to my office on most nice days and on that walk I passed a fire station. After 9-11, people would literally walk right into the station, some with batches of cookies, neighborhood deli owners would drop in with trays of sandwiches; nobody would walk by without expressing their gratitude. It was an awful day that none of us will ever forget, but it reminded the world that first responders put their lives on the line…for us. The heroic work first responders do takes both mental and physical strength and stamina, endurance and nerves of steel. And for most, their physical training is supremely important as they rely completely on being fit enough to handle the jobs they do. As part of the cover story, we’ve had the pleasure of meeting some really top-notch local first responders. My role as Fit941 publisher has allowed me to meet many great and interesting people and these men and women, without question, are at the top of that list. With the recent events in Orlando, San Bernardino, and Paris and even in everyday situations from tragic car accidents to house fires to lost children and water rescues, we know that frightening and tragic emergency events can happen at anytime, anywhere. We want to honor the brave women and men that keep themselves in peak physical and mental condition so they are prepared to run into the danger while helping the rest of us run out. To the firefighters, EMTs, police officers, and the countless other first responders including lifeguards, we thank you.

Athlete Profile China Smith’s Summer Fight Night at Robarts
H
ometown hero, world heavyweight boxing champion and dedicated kid’s advocate and mentor, China Smith presents another exciting fight night event dubbed ‘In the Heat of the Night,’ Saturday, July 16 at the Robarts Arena, 3000 Ringling Blvd., in Sarasota. Doors open at 5 p.m. Come witness talented fighters from all over Florida, most, as China says, “future professional and Olympic fighters.”
Mallory Waggoner Mallory Waggoner, an outside hitter on the Indiana University volleyball team, has been playing volleyball since the 6th grade. But her first sport was basketball, which she began playing at 5. Mallory, a Sarasota native who graduated from Riverview High School in 2013, gave up basketball to play volleyball and was named team captain for her senior season. Mallory, at 6 feet tall, said in a video for Indiana University that by the time she was in high school, she’d begun playing club volleyball and she soon “developed a big passion” for volleyball. She played for Coastline Volleyball Club, was selected to the Florida Regional High Performance Camp, won a silver medal competing with Team Florida GNY in Tucson, played for Team USA High Performance in Iowa and California and in 2013 won gold with USA Junior A1 Red in the Women's International Junior championship. A scholar athlete, Mallory credits her determination and strong work ethic to her grandfather, who she said began working to support his family at age 13 and to this day, at age 80, is still working as a landscape architect. "It is really challenging to play volleyball at the Big 10 level and to maintain high grades. But, I think I am driven to succeed because I want to have many doors open to me after college,” Mallory said. “In addition, it's really important to me to make my family proud—especially my grandfather. He is a man that has worked every day of his life from the time he was very young to provide a good life for his family. He is my inspiration and I love him and my grandmother so much." 12 JULY | AUGUST 2016
Tickets are $20 and are available online at EventBrite or through China’s website at ChinaSmithBoxer.com. Special VIP ringside tickets are available by calling 941-587-1671 or 941-536-3598. The fight card is subject to change. Sarasota’s own China Smith, the two-time former National Boxing Association Heavyweight Champion of the World, is known as the ‘People’s Champ’ for his commitment to his community and specifically to youth in Sarasota and Manatee counties. China has a non-profit organization dedicated to helping kids called China Smith & Friends, runs the Manatee County Police Athletic League kids’ fitness program and Team China Smith’s Boxing Extreme Fitness Program and summer camp. The heavyweight champion southpaw, known in the ring as The Dragon, has been honored with a Key to the City of Sarasota and even has a day named for him in Sarasota: China Smith Day. China’s Golden Gloves Boxing event in February of 2016 was a knockout and was featured online and on broadcast TV. For more information about ‘In the Heat of the Night’ amateur boxing event at Robarts Arena on July 16, visit China’s website at ChinaSmithBoxer.com.

Hot Enough For You?
H
otYoga4You Sarasota doesn’t think so.
“Florida summers are known for their heat and humidity. The last place you’d think to spend your time is practicing hot yoga, right? Well, maybe it’s time to think again—and here’s why,” says Yolanda Nash, HotYoga4You owner. Nash says Hot Yoga “leads the fitness and wellness industries in detoxification, weight loss, and energetic renewal.” “The physical rehabilitation and mental clarity that comes from regular practice is unrivaled. But in the summer months, the hardest part of the practice may be getting into that hot room,” Nash says. The sweat that comes from working out in a hot room “will start to detoxify and rejuvenate. So, right off the bat—if you’re seeking wellness and renewal, run towards the heat, not away from it,” Nash says. Nash says running from air conditioned space to air conditioned space during the summer doesn’t allow bodies to perspire. “Wellness doesn’t happen without a little sweat,” she says. HotYoga4You is offering a special for Floridians this summer; $30 for 30 consecutive days of Hot Yoga. For more information about the summer special and Hot Yoga, visit HotYoga4You.com.

Sammy Jo
S
amantha ‘Sammy Jo’ Bozza’s story is one about the undeniable power of the human spirit to overcome adversity. While someone else might have given way, Sammy Jo pushed forward. As painful as her journey has at times been, she’s at once an inspiration and the epitome of a survivor…and one with an infectious smile and spirit. When Sammy Jo was 15, then an aspiring model and beauty pageant contestant, she suffered a brain aneurism caused by an arteriovenous malformation which left her in a coma and paralyzed. After a close encounter with death, years of surgeries and rehabilitation, she has not only survived but thrived. Sammy Jo is still partially paralyzed, but that has not stopped her from fighting for herself and others. Her motto? She puts it beautifully: “We cannot all do great things, but we can do small things with great love." Sammy Jo helps and inspires people from all walks of life with her kind, caring and generous nature. She’s sweet, yes. But she’s tough. She’s fought every day; she returned to high school at Cardinal Mooney in Sarasota to graduate after her catastrophic illness; she graduated from State College of Florida; received an aesthetician license from the Bradenton Beauty and Barber Academy; was a co-owner of a Sarasota-based Curves for Women; is president of Samantha’s Friends, a non-profit dedicated to helping individuals challenged by disabilities gain independence and companionship with the assistance of a service canine; she was honored in 2004 as the first ever recipient of the ‘Woman of Achievement Award’ by the Miss Florida Scholarship Pageant; and now, because nothing can stop her, she trains at Jaco's Boxing, MMA + Fitness Gym with Adam and Kelli Jaco. “Sammy has been training at Jacos for over a year,” say the Jacos. “Every time she is here, she inspires all of us. Her hard work and continued dedication makes us all want to be better.”

SRQ Cosmetic Surgeon’s TV Debut
S
arasota Surgical Arts’ Dr. Alberico J. Sessa recently appeared on ABC 7’s Suncoast View to discuss his “unique approach to cosmetic surgery” and how he’s able to provide such “spectacular results.” “My job is to give people back what they used to have,” he says. “Most people don’t want to look different; they just want to look younger and better.” And he works hard to achieve “more natural results and looks.” In particular, Dr. Sessa points to the “biggest change” in breast augmentation are natural-looking memory gel implants.
“The newest thing in recent history is the memory gel, anatomically correct and very natural-looking implants,” he says. “People know them as the ‘gummy bear’ implants. They’re anatomic implants that help prevent that too-roundish look some women don’t like.” During his educational training, residency and fellowship (Fordham College, Louisiana State University Medical School and residency and cosmetic surgery fellowship in Salt Lake City, Utah, respectively), Dr. Sessa was constantly searching for approaches to surgery that reduced the need for lengthier surgeries. And today, his surgical approach is focused on achieving natural results without much downtime. Dr. Sessa is a full-body cosmetic surgeon, providing procedures from facelifts, brow-lifts and neck-lifts to breast augmentation and reduction and body procedures including tummytucks, liposuction and butt-lifts. All of these procedures are performed at Dr. Sessa’s Sarasota Surgical Arts state-of-the-art facility at 4143 Clark Road in Sarasota. Sarasota Surgical Arts also features a spa where clients can enjoy medical modality facials, peels, and resurfacing as well as body waxing and even makeup. For more information about Dr. Sessa or Sarasota Surgical Arts, call 941-313-3274 or visit SarasotaSurgicalArts.com.

Kick Off Summer with Karate
Messenger Wins Ms. Bikini Universe Title
A
t the Fitness Universe competition in Miami Beach, Sarasota’s Heather Messenger was named 2016 Ms. Bikini Universe Tall Class Champion.
S
arasota Sport Karate has announced its inaugural Summer Sport Karate program, taught by professional kickboxer Johnny ‘Speed’ Garcia. Open to all ages, 4 and up, students will learn the fundamentals of Katas (forms), Kumite (point sparring), and basic Karate techniques.
Heather, who is a local Isagenix performance line rep, won her division at the international competition not just based on beauty, though Ms. Bikini Universe describes the competition as a “beauty contest,” rather she won for body shape, condition and overall attractiveness.
Classes are currently underway and continue through August. Registrations are being accepted now for the 3-week summer Karate sessions. Classes are held Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
The competition included three rounds and contestants were judged on sportswear selection, personality, appearance, poise and presence. Competitors showed off their modeling talents and creativity, and in the swimsuit, were judged on body condition, facial beauty, appearance and poise and presence. Judges analyzed body shape, tone, symmetry, complexion, poise presentation and overall condition and were also looking for a fit, toned feminine body that displayed proper conditioning.
Classes consist of: Warm-up, including cardio exercises and stretching to increase heart rate, create blood flow and prevent injuries; Bag training and pad training to develop proper kick and punch techniques; Technique combos and drills to develop timing, balance, coordination and strategy; Leg strengthening and conditioning for stronger, faster kicks; Introductory to forms where students will learn a series of basic movements in stances and coordinated strikes against an imaginary opponent.
On its Facebook page, Bikini Universe says of Heather that she is, “Truly an inspiration to all women out there.’ Heather shares, ‘I thought I was the only one that ever felt this way. That no one would understand, but I am here to tell women that they can get through this. That there is light at the end of the tunnel.’ She has spoken very openly about her rigorous journey with fitness and as a new mother.”
Classes are held Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4:30-5:30 p.m. and Saturdays at 10:30-11:30 a.m. with sessions July 5 – July 23 and July 26 – August 13. The Sport Karate Summer program cost is $70 per person, per three-week session. Each participant receives a free pair of kicking pants, (for first-time students only). Note that each session will require a minimum of five participants, so dates and times may be subject to change. The Sarasota Sport Karate Summer program is held at Definition Fit, located at 1477 5th St. in Sarasota. For more information or to register call Sensei Johnny at 941-587-1372.

officer’s life as well as others. When the time comes, I will not doubt my training or physical capabilities." DiCapua stays fit, eats healthy and works out often, usually four to six times a week. "I enjoy CrossFit. I like the camaraderie and competitiveness of CrossFit to keep me interested and motivated. To lean out, I’ll increase cardio on the StairMaster,” she says. “I also try to stick to a diet of lean proteins and vegetables and avoid processed foods. But I’ll also splurge on a good cheeseburger and fries from time to time. When eating out on night shift, I tend to eat salads, chicken, and eggs. Bringing your own food would be the best bet to avoid buying junk food.” And DiCapua has some advice for fellow law enforcement officers about how best to get back in shape. “Take small steps when getting back into fitness and a healthy lifestyle,” she suggests. “I recommend cleaning up the diet first by cutting sugar, sodas, and junk food. Then make smalls goals that are achievable.”

he term ‘first responders’ became very much part of our national lexicon after Sept. 11, 2001, when firefighters, EMTs and police officers ran in to the devastation to save lives as they risked their own. But it happens every day, in every town and city, be it a house fire or car wreck, and in many cases, much worse, as we have become all too familiar. It takes a special kind of person to run in when we're running out: brave, selfless, heroic and, importantly, physically fit.
T
Young Sub Kwon, a professor of Kinesiology and director of Humboldt State University's Human Performance Lab, pioneered research in 2015 to “help firefighters and law enforcement better manage the physical and emotional demands of their jobs.” His position was that many first responders
are not as healthy and fit as they need to be because of the stress of their jobs. Plus, he said, in the case of police officers, they are very often driving and if the need to sprint into action arises, which happens often, they have no time to warm-up; they just have to move, and move very quickly. Sarasota County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Michelle Di Capua says how fit an officer is, or looks, can impact decision-making when chasing a fleeing suspect or coping with a life-threatening situation. “Suspects size-up officers when making their decisions on their next move. One will think twice when a fit, muscular officer with a strong command presence is on-scene,” DiCapua says. “In a life-threatening situation, strength, endurance, and mind-set can save the
DiCapua recommends adding a few more seconds or minutes when jogging, adding a extra set of reps when working out, for example. “In one month, you’ll be surprised how far you’ve come.” She also suggest “throwing out the scale” and focusing rather on how clothing fits and how one’s body feels as energy increases. She also says track progress with photos: “Make the time and commitment to respect your body." Crossed trained as a firefighter and paramedic, Sarasota County Fire Department Division Chief-EMS Operations Carson Sanders, has spent the last 26 years in fire and rescue service. He knows well the stress of the profession and says being physically fit can also help with keeping first responders mentally fit as well so as to avoid burnout: “In my experience, those that are physically fit are usually able to handle the mental stress better as well.” And being in good shape is critical because of the physical demands of the job.

“Firefighting and EMS are both physically taxing,” he says. For example, EMS crews must lift patients and maneuver in difficult positions, firefighters have the extra weight of requisite gear including air packs, while being able to maneuver and work in dark, hot, dangerous environments. Firefighters must also use an air pack when working in hazardous environments, he says. “A firefighter’s physical fitness has a direct correlation to the amount of time they can operate on a scene in a safe manner.” In 2015, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health reported that of the 89 firefighter fatalities, 52 died from heart attacks, not building collapses, smoke inhalation, burns, or other causes “the public might believe would cause firefighter deaths,” Sanders says. “Our abilities, including our fitness, will make the difference between life and death for others. Not only do we owe the public our very best each and every day we are on duty, but we owe it to each other. Our lives can depend on the abilities of our co-workers,” Sanders says. “During an emergency, we have to be able to depend on those around us to keep each other safe. Having the physical abilities to do this is paramount.” And he reminds that first responders take an oath that says “you will be at your best in order to help people on their worst possible day. Part of being at your best is being physically able to do what needs to be done.” Sanders works out six days a week with a mix of CrossFit, weight lifting, and HIIT training and says he likes to mix it up with “activities that will help with the demands of the job,” like flipping tires, using sandbags, and using a sledgehammer. For Sanders, day seven is a mobility or yoga day. “Getting older, I feel much better by maintaining my flexibility,” he says. “It also makes my workouts stronger.” Sanders’ suggests his fellow first responders “start small” when looking to get back in shape.

Nate DiBitetto, Firefighter/EMT in Manatee County
“People tend to jump into something with both feet that are too restrictive in their diet and commit too much time to the work-outs. They end up getting frustrated and quit. Commit to changing your eating habits slowly,” he says. He suggests taking a walk, a swim, or a bike ride first and then commit to 30 minutes a day of activity and turn it into a habit. And he says, work out with a buddy. “For the fire service, the hope is that the whole station will work out together. This makes it fun and hopefully everyone holds each other accountable.” he says. “The reasons for public safety personnel to exercise and be physically fit are very serious, the training doesn’t have to be. Too many people look at exercise as work. The reality is working out is fun. It can challenge yourself and others. Being your best is a mindset and the battle is to be your best, not to judge or be judged.”
FIT941.COM
Nate DiBitetto is relatively new to firefighting; he’s been a Manatee County firefighter for the past three years, two as a volunteer. But he’s very aware, as a longtime fitness aficionado, that given the rigorous demands of the job, being physically fit is key. “We are expected to perform a number of physically exhausting tasks at a moment’s notice during our shift. Strength and stamina are two qualities that can be vastly improved with exercise and weight training; both of which can save precious seconds on the fireground,” he says. “There is no time to waste and sometimes a few extra seconds could be the difference between life and death for ourselves or the person we're trying to help.” DiBitetto says fitness has always been his passion and he is always looking for “new ways to challenge myself physically
Remold RESTORE
and mentally and push my limits to where I never thought I could go.” “There's a saying, ‘Train like you fight. Fight like you train.’ This saying really hits home with me when I'm working out because there's no better way to prepare for the worst case scenario on a call than to put your body through as many of the same conditions as possible,” he says. In addition to his functional training routines, he also tries to mimic actual fire or rescue call conditions. He’ll sometimes perform “pre-exhaust exercises “to get his heart rate up and “fatigue my body” simulating a real scenario. DiBitetto says when he can, he’ll work out in full gear including selfcontained breathing apparatus, which adds “extra weight, heat and because of the masks that we wear, adds a little of the panic factor in as well.” “I personally like to set up a circuit style training that combines, cardio, strength training, endurance and really tests your ‘mind over matter’ mentality,” he says. “I like to do as many rounds of my circuit as possible before my air bottle runs out of air. That means going all out. As intense as my body can go until I literally run out of air. I not only am working to improve my physical fitness, but also improve my overall air consumption so that I am able to make that bottle last longer during crucial moments when a few extra minutes on the fire ground could make a difference.” He also combines a bodybuilding style workout routine along with HIIT.

DiBitetto, who can be found on social media as TheFitFireman, advises that fellow first responders looking to get in shape first need to first recognize they “need to make a change.” “If you're a first responder who might be out of shape, or just wants to get in better shape, you owe it to yourself, and your community to provide them with the best version of you that you can give,” he says. “We can take steps each day to get in better shape and help reduce our number of line-of-duty deaths. WORKING (OUT)
to Raise Awareness about Veteran Suicide by Ellyn Santiago
Exercise can help veterans with depression he devastating and heartbreaking statistic was a tremendous wakeup call for many. Every day somewhere in America, 22 U.S . military veterans take their own lives. The Veterans Administration 2012 Suicide Data Report, which calculated the frightening rate of veteran suicide, was at once shocking and a call to action.
T
One way to begin to address the crisis, in addition to outreach to make sure vets are receiving the mental health care they need given post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression are potential mediators, came in the form of research studies that showed that exercise can reduce depression, and hopefully, suicidal ideation. A 2013 study on veteran suicide by the American Association of Suicidology 26 JULY | AUGUST 2016
that examined the impact of exercise on suicide risk, namely by examining the relationship between PTSD, depression and sleep disturbances, found that exercise does reduce depression and benefit sleep, which in turn may help lower suicide risk. Twenty-two veterans committing suicide every day is a harsh reality. But the Suicide and Life Threatening Behavior study provides hope as does Derek Weida, the amputee Army veteran who served three tours in Iraq, and is now known globally for his inspirational, motivational and often hilarious, fitness videos that document his journey. There are myriad national and regional efforts to raise awareness about veteran suicide using the very thing that may, for some, help fight the PTSD and

depression battle with a commitment to exercise and fitness. Nationally, 22KILL is a movement bridging the gap between veterans and civilians to build a community of support by working to raise awareness to the veteran suicide epidemic and educate the public on mental health issues such as PTSD. Founded by Honor Courage Commitment Inc., #22KILL is a platform to bring understanding and raise awareness about the struggles of transitioning out of the military: “The solution is veteran empowerment. One of the biggest challenges veterans face is finding a sense of purpose after service. The group encourages people to advocate for veterans and show support by participating in a push-up challenge.

and may decrease suicide risk Its goal is to get 22 million pushups performed to honor those who serve. “Every pushup counts so don’t be shy to show your support for our veterans. You can do as many or few pushups as you can or choose. Whether it’s 1 or 100 in a row, we will accept them however they come. They can be assisted (on your knees), incline (on a desk/wall), or if you physically are unable to do any, we’ll even take air pushups. They all count towards the goal as long as you follow the instructions below,” the website reads. Simply perform as many pushups as you can and post a video or photo with a hashtag indicating the number of pushups completed and post publically to social media like Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter and /or to YouTube. The hashtag would appear this way: #(insert a number here)pushups #22KILL.
Locally, the Sgt. Eric Landon 5K is set for July 30 in Dunedin. Landon took his own life and the 5K is at once a way to honor his memory and support Stop Soldier Suicide. For more information or to register for the event, visit Active.com. CrossFit Bradenton is holding a WOD to End Veteran Suicide set for Aug. 20. The CrossFit Bradenton WOD to End Veteran Suicide will include 22 exercises and 22 reps of each. At minute 22 into the WOD, everyone will stop and take a two-minute moment of silence for those who have died in the veteran suicide epidemic. Participants can register for free or grab the WOD Shirt and Active Heroes information and materials by visiting ActiveHeroes.org/wod or CrossFitBradenton.com.
Coming in October, an Irreverent Warriors ‘Silkies Hike’ is set for Sarasota. The hike has participants hiking 22km, carrying 22 kg packs for the 22 veterans a day that commit suicide. The event began as a single hike in 2015 and within a few months it took off nationwide. Founded by Captain Danny Maher, USMC (Ret), and best friend, Sergeant Ryan Loya, USMC, the two had each lost a close friend to suicide. In part, the mission of Irreverent Warriors is to help veterans heal the mental wounds of war through therapeutic events in order to reduce PTSD and help prevent veteran suicide. Check back with Fit941.com for details on the Oct. 6 Irreverent Warriors hike.

His wife Victoria also joined the boot camp; both of them were sold.
■ WHATS YOUR SECRET WEAPON ■ WOMEN
Research shows that one reason females have difficulty losing weight compared to men is lower levels of testosterone. When they do lose weight, they do not gain muscle mass like men do. Low levels of Testosterone in women can cause unwanted bulging in hips/thighs, infertility, fragile bones, inability to orgasm, and thinning hair. Levels of Testosterone in women vary from 17 to 80 nanograms per deciliter (ng/dL), depending on age and other factors. As they get older, those levels can fall as low as 1 to 10 ng/dl. Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) is equally as beneficial in females as in men, just on a smaller scale.
LIFESTYLE
A healthy lifestyle is associated with higher hormone levels and higher hormone levels seem to induce a more active, healthier lifestyle. Treatments for men are aimed at getting testosterone levels up to an optimal range, around 850 to 1100. Treatments for women are aimed at getting testosterone levels up to an optimal range, around 40 to 60. We offer easy inexpensive testing, saliva, finger prick, blood s e r u m or urine ($25.00 to $50.00).
MEN Research published in the Journal of Endocrinology
shows that low levels of testosterone is a risk factor for heart disease in men and is also linked to Alzheimer’s disease. Levels of Testosterone in men vary from 150 to 1200 nanograms per deciliter (ng/dL), depending on age and other factors. Testosterone levels typically start to decline after age 30. For some men, as they get older, those levels fall to 500 or below. “Low T” has been attributed to low sex drive, sluggish feeling, muscle aches, memory loss, lack of focus and inability to lose weight even while dieting and hitting the Gym.

Already a successful businessman – he and his wife have owned a popular tanning salon chain in their native Michigan for decades—after his dramatic weight loss, Van Dine knew what was next. “This idea was very interesting. You’re not just helping someone feel and look good, you’re changing their lives, actually changing lives. My wife felt the same so we started putting a plan together,” he says. After years of running successful businesses, Van Dine knew, “We didn’t have the expertise for the fitness side, the actual training. We got into this industry the backwards way, I guess you could say. Everyone else has a fitness degree first. I know how to run a business. The answer is pretty simple: I’m a product of what I’m building; I understand it from the client’s point of view and I’m a workaholic so I can learn anything.” He founded X 30 Fit Boot Camp, now open 5140 Clark Road in Sarasota and featuring “the best trainers,” Van Dine says. And they found the best in Sarasota’s Whit Reutlinger, a certified personal trainer who specializes teaching TRX suspension training, spinning, aquatic exercise as a professional AEA Aqua Trainer and Hydrorider (aquatic bikes) instruction. Whit is also a former U.S. Professional Tennis Association pro and three-time graduate of the National Outdoor Leadership School. Whit will be X 30 Fit Boot Camp’s head trainer. Another X 30 Fit Boot Camp trainer is Dalton Stenberg, certified Whit Reutlinger trainer and lifestyle coach who studied Health and Fitness management at Northern Michigan University. Stenberg is a lifelong athlete having played both high school and collegiate football among other sports. While at NMU, Stenberg became manager of Marquette’s leading health and fitness club and has extensive personal training and physical therapy experience having worked with clients suffering from debilitating injuries. Van Dine says Stenberg was highly successful in “bringing people back into a fit and healthy lifestyle.” Van Dine says the idea of a ‘group personal’ training boot camp is not an oxymoron. “X 30 Fit Boot Camp is a group where each is trained personally,” he says. 30 JULY | AUGUST 2016

The

on the HERD by Norm Bower
f you are a javelin thrower or high jumper, you are on your own for training. If you are a football, softball or soccer player, you are definitely going to have to practice with others. If you are a runner, however, you can have it both ways. You can conquer that deserted road by yourself and clear your mind. Or you can join a running group and train with other like-minded enthusiasts and reap a lot of rewards.
I
USA Track and Field lists 93 registered running clubs in Florida, plus another 90 “unofficial” teams statewide, and, of course there are hundreds of very informal groups organized through work places, churches, fitness centers and neighborhoods. You name it, people will run around it. The president of the Bradenton Runners Club, Joe Tanner, say that simple motivation seems to be the best reason for being part of a running group. That group is 30 years old and has 200 members of all ages, according to Tanner. “If you really want consistent training,” he suggests, “you are much better off running with a group.” Some days, you aren’t going to want to put on those shoes and sweat your hiney off. Fatigue, work, and family can get control of your schedule. But when you have paid a 32 JULY | AUGUST 2016

Why joining a running group may be your best motivation ever!
membership fee, committed to a workout schedule with friends, and have your running shoes in the car, the odds of running regularly are greatly enhanced.
Practical Reasons Any toddler can run, but there is a lot of technique to learn as an adult runner, so joining a running group can provide plenty of free, high-quality information from seasoned runners. The veterans will happily recommend favorite brands of shoes, clothes, nutrition supplements and sunscreen. And they can talk about blisters and BMs for hours. Newbies in the running world will also need to learn running etiquette, and a group will quickly embrace a runner who is “learning the ropes” when it comes to passing other runners, resting, hydrating, assisting folks on the track, and even spitting. When runners compete at venues away from home, the group can share so many things including advice, travel expenses, and good will. Fellow runners may be relied upon for race-day conditioning tips, gas money and a pat on the back when they finish. If you sprain or strain, you’ll likely get lots of encouragement during your recovery.
The slogan “safety in numbers” certainly applies to runners. Which is easier for a driver to notice—10 runners or a solitary figure? And after dark, will you feel safer on a running path with a handful of friends or by yourself? Odds are you will be noticed, respected and accommodated more often when you are with a group.
Social Reasons As Tanner explains, “Running clubs do so much together all year round, they truly are extended family.” The Bradenton Running Club has organized runs five days a week, plus social gatherings including ‘happy hours,’ pizza parties, awards banquets and beach parties throughout the year. And the club holds a Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving Day to help provide food and clothing for families in need. Other running groups in the 941 include the Manasota Track Club and Lakewood Ranch Track Club. A running group will give you a mental boost on and off the track, as you meet new people with a common interest, share successes and disappointments, and find out where you fit in the running spectrum. Ready, Set, GO.

PARTNER BODYWEIGHT EXERCISE This is a partner bodyweight exercise where one partner is doing an elevated feet push-up and the other is doing a squat. WHAT ARE WE WORKING? The partner doing the squat, believe it or not, is working the entire body. When we work our largest muscles, we release testosterone which helps us build muscle throughout the body and shed fat. For every pound of muscle we build, our body will burn an extra 50 to 70 calories per day. The primary muscles being worked with the squat are the quadriceps, the glutes---and secondarily we work the abs, because when done properly, the core needs to be engaged throughout the entire move. The partner doing the elevated feet pushups is primarily working their chest muscles (pectorals). If you think about the position of your arms when your feet are elevated, the angle is obtuse (greater than 90 degrees) therefore this type of push-up is similar to an incline bench press which will tend to work upper chest, and is typically a little bit harder than flat bench (regular push-up) or decline bench (on your back with your feet up). Demonstrating this partner move are Renee and Logan from Around the Clock Fitness Sarasota. Around the Clock Fitness is a 70,000 square foot facility with state of the art equipment located at 935 N. Beneva Rd Sarasota. Renee is wearing Around The Clock Fitness’ brand new line of Live Fit workout apparel.

“The only thing required in acroyoga is that you have fun,” says Brittany Wilcox, Sarasota-based aerial silks instructor. “I love acroyoga simply because it can be enjoyed by anyone, anywhere, at any time.”

Massage therapist Joshua Mauro has been practicing Acroyoga for about a year. He describes it as a two-person activity that combines yoga poses and acrobatic movements. “Typically there is a base and flyer, who remain connected at all times. The base lies on their back in a ‘L-shape’ and balances the flyer above them with their hands and feet. It's all about balance, stacking, stability and stretching,” Mauro says. “Acroyoga is also an awesome isometric, partnered workout that develops a huge bond of trust between the base and flyer.” Mauro also explains the “solar and lunar” side of acroyoga. “The ‘solar’ side is more like playing with friends, making fun shapes for pictures, or creating a washing machine for videos; ‘washing machines’ are flows, or a series of movements, to link different poses, that are designed to return the flyer to the original pose in which the flow began,” he explains. “The ‘lunar’ side is therapeutic and healing for both base and flyer. The base will balance and stretch the flyer through different poses. Many of the stretches are done through inversions and back bends, using traction and allowing gravity to decompress the spine and alleviate pressure off of the disks,” Mauro says. “These stretches are held in long poses, allowing the flyer to breathe into them, letting the body's tissue to stretch. The flyer can perform Thai massage and stretches on the base.” And while an understanding of the ‘sides’ may be helpful, the idea is to have fun. “Acroyoga also develops a community just like yoga. It creates an environment where I can reach out to other communities to learn and play with others,” Mauro says. “It really doesn't feel like a workout …until the next day." Wilcox agrees. “It's not only a lot of fun, it’s a great way to connect with a complete stranger, or strengthen any friendship,” says Wilcox. “It’s mentally and physically challenging, so it keeps the mind and body constantly stimulated.”

Every Sunday evening, weather permitting, CircuSoul’s ‘AcroYoga Sarasota’ meets from 5 p.m. until dusk “for some fun in the beautiful landscape of Sarasota Bay at Marina Jacks … where people can come and fly and unlock your human potential.” The acroyoga “jams” are open to all ages and levels, and are donation-based. There’s no registration required; just show up. Folks are advised that in the event of rain, to please meet at CircuSoul Yoga studios, located at 4141 S Tamiami Trail Suite #11. “Acroyoga is a great way to build self confidence and trust in others,” Wilcox says. “We have strong ‘acro’ community in Sarasota that I am so happy to be a part of.” Check out the AcroYoga Sarasota group Facebook page for more information.

Your Cheat Day: ‘Cheat Sheet’
by Anna Panzarino
Everyone needs a cheat day. A day to eat like it’s 1999. Ok, well maybe not that dramatic, but fit folks need a respite; a day to indulge …but not too, too much. Fit941 asked a few local eateries about how they approach healthy eating and what dish from their menu they’d suggest for a cheat day dish. 38 JULY | AUGUST 2016
FIT941.COM
Who says you can’t eat healthy at a Sports Bar? Gecko’s Grill & Pub is living proof that the paradigm has changed, and for the better! At any of six locations, athletes can fuel up with healthful options while enjoying a little recovery, relaxation or even a cheat day at a Sports Bar perennially voted a local favorite. The Gecko’s mission is to provide exceptional hospitality, fresh local fare with a gourmet twist, and a menu that is accessible to everyone. Gecko’s has long been a partner with Honeyside Farms, a family-owned sustainable farm, which coordinates crop plantings to supply our restaurants with their delicious produce. Grower Tiffany Bailey and her father, Jack Bispham, both studied Agriculture at UF. Together they steward the land to provide high quality and delicious seasonal fruits & vegetables. Gecko’s also partners with family-owned Three Suns Ranch in Punta Gorda, which provides our restaurants with 100% grass fed Bison. Three Suns made the commitment to raise only natural, hormone-free, grass-fed meats for discriminating consumers. Nutritionally, this Bison offers more protein, omega-3 & nutrients with fewer calories and less fat. Also, Dakin Dairy Farm in Parrish which supplies our dairy products at all six Gecko’s locations, and at our Better Burger concept, S’macks Burgers & Shakes. Before “Farm to Fork” was coined; Gecko’s was already setting a healthy table. We’re thinking the Bison Meat Loaf. Yum!

This menu is fun, full of fresh ingredients, and offers flavor combinations you won’t find anywhere else. It’s comfort food for the kid at heart. Originally started as a food tent in Cincinnati, Tom+Chee has enjoyed explosive growth since the founders pitched the business on ABC’s “Shark Tank.” Tom+Chee has also been featured on ABC’s The Chew, The Travel Channel’s Man vs. Food Nation and Amazing Eats. The Today Show named their grilled cheese donut one of the “Best Sandwiches in America.” Tom+Chee suggest their signature Tom+Chee Grilled Cheese on white bread with cheddar, mozzarella, garlic seasoning and diced tomatoes. Or maybe the Hippy Chee, wheat bread, cheddar cheese, garlic hummus, diced tomatoes, cucumbers and mixed greens. The Swiss and ‘Shroom is made on pumpernickel rye with Swiss, grilled mushrooms and onions. Add a super healthy Green Goat salad made of mixed greens, toasted almonds, cranberries, goat cheese and a white balsamic dressing and you’re all set.
A cheat day dinner while enjoying a stunning Little Sarasota Bay sunset sound good? Cater ng to Your
Macronutr ents by James Steadman
or anyone looking to build and retain muscle while slimming down, macronutrients like glutamine (also known as L-glutamine) and BCAAs (Branched Chain Amino Acids) are essential for the body to metabolize protein, gain energy, prevent muscle loss, maintain intestinal functioning and boost their immune system response. It’s critical for anyone on a strict training regimen to consider supplementing with both glutamine and BCAAs to produce their desired results at an accelerated pace and get the maximum efficiency with their workouts. For those who are unfamiliar with these nutrients, here’s a brief breakdown of what they’re all about and how they work.
F
Glutamine
First, take a look at glutamine, the most common amino acid in muscle tissue. Glutamine is the most plentiful amino acid in your body’s bloodstream, and it has a number of powerful benefits. Although glutamine is created naturally within the body, it’s easily depleted, especially with intense workouts. Reduced glutamine decreases strength, stamina and quick recovery times. Studies have shown that supplementing glutamine, even at levels as low as 2 grams, can multiply muscle growth hormones by as much as 400 percent — nitrogen is transported to your muscles’ cells, protein is metabolized, and the body’s immune system stays strong. Without supplementation, glutamine levels can take up to six days to return to their normal levels following your workouts. 40 JULY | AUGUST 2016
Glutamine helps your body synthesize protein and maintain muscle strength and size during training. It aids in hydrating and preserving muscle volume, speeding up recovery times and healing from injuries. It also strengthens and energizes the immune system, which is very important for bodybuilders, whose immune systems can be weakened or overloaded by constant workouts, making them more vulnerable to illness.
BCAAs
For the intestines, glutamine helps maintain structural integrity and prevents Leaky Gut Syndrome, a key cause of weight gain. Glutamine even helps cure intestinal ulcers, and studies have shown that supplementing at least 1.6 grams per day resulted in a 92 percent cure rate for ulcers over a four-week period.
At least 40 percent of your body’s nine daily required amino acids are BCAAs. BCAAs are primarily found in foods that are high in protein, such as salmon, beef, chicken, eggs and whey. Supplemented BCAAs are even more efficient than consumed BCAAs because they bypass the gut and the liver, going directly into the bloodstream. Higher levels of BCAAs mean a slower breakdown of muscle cells and a greater prevention of muscle loss.
The recommended levels for glutamine supplementation are two to three servings of 5 grams daily, for a total of 10 to 15 grams. Glutamine should be consumed in the morning, after workouts and before bedtime for maximum benefits.
FIT941.COM
BCAAs consist of three essential varieties: valine, leucine and isoleucine. BCAAs simplify the task of converting amino acids into energy during intense muscle exertion. BCAAs make up roughly 35 percent of your body’s muscle tissue. They’re essential because they’re unable to be formed from other amino acids — BCAAs need to come from either food, supplements or both.
As might be expected, BCAAs inhibit and delay muscle fatigue and breakdown. They trigger the process of protein
synthesis and improve glucose uptake. These processes help minimize muscle loss even when your body is not undergoing training; testosterone is increased and cortisol is reduced. When you’re working out, BCAAs reduce soreness during recovery time and improve metabolism, which produces energy. Greater consumption of BCAAs is identified with leaner body shapes and greater muscle mass. BCAAs have even been studied as indicators of longevity.

You've Got Nothing to Lose but Weight ealthy habits begin at home and with more time off due to summer breaks and vacation time, there is no better time to start taking steps to adopting healthy behaviors, including increasing physical activity. To help families access information on leading a healthier lifestyle, including exercise and menu planning options (with incentives), Fleet Feet Sports Sarasota and United Healthcare have partnered together to offer Sarasota and Manatee County residents an affordable—and fun—way to jump start weight loss and explore a variety of fitness options.

‘Ton of Fun’ is a community-based weight loss initiative started in 2015 by Fleet Feet Sports Sarasota owners, Molly and David Jackson (who also own the two New Balance stores in Sarasota and University Park), and United Healthcare to help local residents lose a ton of weight, 2,000 pounds, and keep Sarasota on the Florida Department of Health’s ‘Healthy Weight Community Champion’ list. Now in its fifth session, ‘Ton of Fun’ provides a sound and engaging alternative to extreme weight loss and exercise programs that can be self-defeating and not sustainable in the long run. By providing access to a range of community partners, including nutritionists, physical therapists, trainers, yoga instructors and coaches, participants choose from a menu of weekly options to help them on their wellness journey. Open to teens and adults, anyone 12 years of age and older, ‘Ton of Fun’ brings together the five key steps to 42 JULY | AUGUST 2016

helping people achieve a healthier lifestyle: helping participants determine goals and motivations; establishing baseline measurements; rewarding participants for their progress; revisiting/adjusting goals weekly; and making sure goals stay realistic. Overweight most of her life, retired Sarasota teacher Denise Fugere had tried lots of diets and while she had some short term successes, the weight always crept back. When she heard about Fleet Feet’s ‘Ton of Fun’ challenge, her interest was piqued. “I lost a total of 30 pounds while I participated in Ton of Fun,” Fugere says. “As I lost weight my friends at work kept asking me what diet I was on and I told them I wasn't really on a diet I was just being more conscious of what I ate and exercising more.” While participating in Ton of Fun, Fugere was exposed to a variety exercises such as yoga, walking, and kickboxing. “I never would have had the experience with these things if I didn't join,” she says. “It was really quite a bargain considering all the things I gleaned from this outstanding program. I would most definitely recommend the program to anyone that is interested in living a healthier lifestyle and or losing weight. And the staff at Fleet Feet Sports Sarasota are very welcoming and encourage people at all levels. They make you feel like family and immediately and encourage you."

is Great Exercise for Kids
by Ellie Mae Johnson
Born from imagination and creative invention, BMX got its start when 1970s California kids began riding (and stunting) their bikes on dirt tracks and desert hills and terrain a la motocross performed by motorcycles. Bicycle motocross soon became wildly popular and a sports industry was born. Four decades after being invented by kids, in 2008 BMX became an Olympic sport. And whether cyclists are in it for fun or sport, BMX riding is a great way for kids to keep fit. A BMX bike is small and light, perfect for the type of maneuvering required for bike motocross. And like any other bike, a variety of “minor and major” muscles are “activated” and engaged when riding, according to Livestrong.com. The glutes especially get a great workout as do the quadriceps and hip flexors, Livestrong says. But it’s not just specific muscle groups targeted, riding provides a “full body workout,” says Health Fitness Revolution, increasing strength. “Pedaling uses various leg muscles, while lifting the handlebars to perform tricks can help build muscles in your arms,” Health Fitness Revolution says. BMX riding boosts cardio health, not unlike other forms of bicycling, by allowing the body to “use oxygen more efficiently.” It is established science that enhanced cardiovascular health has myriad health benefits. Even for kids. And BMX riding can burn plenty of calories. Regular BMX riding can generally improve a kid’s fitness, no question about it. As an added bonus, BMX riding is at once thrilling and, since it’s sans rules, allows kids the freedom to express themselves in the sport. Established in 1974, Sarasota BMX Supercorss, is the nation’s oldest continuously operating BMX track. Over the course of its more than four decades in operation, Sarasota BMX Supercross has hosted countless state, regional and national races and is considered the “cornerstone of Florida BMX racing” having 44 JULY | AUGUST 2016

And, the track hosted the Strider World Championships; Strider is for BMX riders ages 5 and under. What may well be the most exciting event ever at Sarasota BMX is set for Oct. 8 and 9. The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) chose the Sarasota track for the 2016 UCI BMX Supercross World Cup finals. It is anticipated that more than 250 male and female athletes from 35 countries will compete at Sarasota BMX Supercross. The two-day championship will have a worldwide live TV audience.
