MAY 2017

y heart is in this issue of Fit941 magazine.

Women’s health issues are not just women’s concerns, of course; the state of women’s health affects the men and children in their lives greatly. If mom isn’t well, the entire family feels it. (No, I won’t make a snarky joke here about how moms don’t get sick; they cannot because who’ll run the show?) Women are juggling now more than ever, so much and if truth be told, women often put themselves dead last on the list of family priorities. That has got to change. Speaking as a mother of just-turned 19-year-old twins, whom I had at 40 (do the math!), I admit that I have neglected myself over these past near 20 years raising them: not enough sleep, always running, too much driving, often opting for the easy option when it comes to my nutrition (the kids eat really well; no “white stuff,” rarely do they have junk, you know the drill) – grab anything because I have no time or worse, forgo food all day then at night ..Ugh. Worse yet is the fact that at the end of too-many-days-to-count, while it feels like I’ve been literally running, I have not. Getting in more focused exercise every day is always my goal, even if it’s a 20-minute fast-walk. But beyond good eating and enough exercise, many of us ignore small symptoms of would may become larger, and scarier health issues and here I’m referring to emotional health. It’s easy to be so focused on everyone else that we forget …’Oh, yeah. I feel really down today; gotta do something about that.’ Yoga, swimming, and long quiet walks on the beach help me. What helps you? Sisters, we have to care for our physical and emotional health, because if we’re not good, they’re not good. So love yourself today. Fit in an extra Pilates class, don’t miss that checkup (“I feel fine!”), slow down, sleep in when possible, and importantly, it’s not how you look, it’s how you feel. And speaking of how you feel, I want to thank in particular Caroline and Hannah for their honesty, candor and beauty; their willingness to share their stories makes me at once cry and smile. In this issue that is in part devoted to women’s health we have stories about body positivity, fit pregnancy, fertility yoga and there a number of events that are all about and for women: The Bra Run is a fav! So enjoy and hit us up on Facebook and Instagram (@Fit941) and share you thoughts and your stories. Oh, and by the way, shout out and thanks to publisher Jason Cross for inviting me to do this month’s Publishers Note!

STEMCELLTHERAPY

SARASOT A CLINIC IS MAKING STEM CELL TREATMENTS MORE EFFECTIVE BY USING COMBINATION THERAPIES!

MarrApose Stem Cell Therapy Using LumoStem Technology Stem Cell Therapy for common orthopedic conditions. You may have already heard that stem cell therapy could hold the answer for many of mankind’s diseases. Indeed, orthopedic stem cell research has shown great promise as an alternative to painful surgical procedures such as arthroscop y, rotator cuff repair, total joint replacement and spinal surger y. One of the biggest advantages with stem cell therapy is the recovery period of several days compared to that of surger y which can be months. Studies have shown results from orthopedic stem cell procedures to be just as good if not superior to joint replacement surger y, yet insurance companies will not cover this type of intervention. Consider the fact that it took many years before joint replacement surger y was widely accepted. This was due to the vast majority of surgeons initially rejecting the idea of placing foreign objects into the body. Unfortunately it is standard for new technologies to take years before becoming widely accepted and covered by insurers. What can Stem Cell Therapy treat? Be careful when choosing your doctor! Stem cell therapy has recently risen in popularity. Clinics around the country are opening up, claiming to offer these regenerative procedures. It is unfortunate that many of these physicians are poorly trained. An example of this would be that these injections should always be performed using image guidance, such as ultrasound. Another controversial issue is the use of placenta or amniotic uid which does not contain stem cells. “It ammation and pain due to the growth factors, but we saw seemed to be helpful for shor t term no cartilage growth,” says Dr. Lieurance, a sonographer and functional neurologist at Advanced Rejuvenation. Also beware of doctors making false claims that adipose stem cells are inferior to bone marrow stem cells. The majorities of these clinics are franchised and must conform to certain treatment methods which may not be in the patients’ best interest.

LumoStem Technology The clinical name for LumoStem is Photo Activation. LumoStem is showing promise when combined with stem cell injections. “Just like plants need good soil to survive, stem cells need a good terrain to properly grow and duplicate. Photo-Activation works on improving the energy level of the cells and tissues which improves the outcomes in our spinal and joint stem cell treatments,” says Dr. Ronald Bramson, who is both a Podiatrist and Orthopedic Specialist. Until now it has been impossible to achieve cient laser dosage in deep areas of the body where the origin of pain and arthritis exist. This is because the body absorbs nearly 70% of the laser light particles in the rst millimeter of skin. Research has shown cant cartilage growth following direct laser application to nerves of the spine and the articular surface of cartilage. It is widely accepted that laser therapy can enhance stem cell growth as well as the cells ability to easily differentiate into healthy cells. “Laser therapy has been a game changer for reducing pain and recovery times with our stem cell treatments. We have noticed quicker, faster, and more successful outcomes,” says Dr. Ronald Bramson.

Specialized laser needle is placed carefully into the knee joint.

With lights turned off, the laser is visualized to ll the joint reach the articular cartilage

Bone Marrow vs. Adipose Stem Cells Both BMAC (Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate) and adipose derived stem cells, or SVF (Stromal Vascular Fraction), are effective. Both have the potential to differentiate into mature functional cartilage. When compared, SVF has shown superiority to BMAC due to the profound ammator y effects of SVF. This may be related to the well documented decline of bone marrow stem cell numbers and vitality with age. Another important advantage of using SVF is their abundance throughout the body. 1 in every 100 cells in abdominal fat is a stem cell. Stem cell therapy using BMAC has been performed much longer than SVF. Simply put, there are more studies available on bone marrow stem cell population, which is why some practitioner s might use BMAC alone, even in light of superior studies on SVF. A 2014 European study conducted on 1,200 patients showed a 90% success rate with joint regeneration using SVF. Researcher s at Leiden University Medical Center’s Depar tment of Immunohematolog y and Blood Transfusion in The Netherlands, led by Helene Roelofs, Ph.D., conducted the study to compare BMAC to SVF. They were seeking an alternative for stem cell therapies due to the small quantity of stem cells available in bone marrow. “Adipose tissue is an interesting alternative since it contains approximately a 500-fold higher frequency of stem cells,” Dr. Roelofs said. They compared the cells healing ability and found it took a smaller dose of

About Advanced Rejuvenation

Advanced Rejuvenation has been providing regenerative orthopedic care in Sarasota since 1997. They have been a leader in the development of cutting edge methods for regenerative medicine using prolotherapy, prolozone, LumoStem, PRP or Platelet Rich Plasma & Stem Cell therapy. Many patients travel to the center from as far as out of the country due to the unique methods they have developed over the last 20 years. The clinical staff includes Medical, Podiatric, Osteopathic, Orthopedic, Radiology, Stem Cell Lab Processing , Sonography, Acupuncture& Neurologist.

SVF cells to achieve the same effect compared to the BMAC. They concluded that SVF was ammation. This superior to BMAC. SVF stem cells appear to be better at reducing chronic may improve outcomes in orthopedic medicine by improving the growth of the stem cells and their ability to differentiate into tendons, ligaments and cartilage. In addition, the sheer number of cells is much higher with SVF compared to BMAC.

Why combine Adipose and Bone Marrow stem cells together? In 2008 Advanced Rejuvenation performed their rst MarrApose. The idea of combining SVF with BMAC was introduced to them by David Crane, M.D. and Rober t Alexander, M.D., who pioneered the treatment in 2006. “It was logical to us that the combination of BMAC and SVF would be superior to having one or the other alone. Over the years we have completed hundreds of cases and have seen far better results when using both SVF and BMAC,” says Dr. Alexander Smither s, who is both a Doctor of Oriental Medicine and M.D. graduate with Advanced Rejuvenation. rmed their obser vations. The combination of BMAC with SVF showed ed In 2015 a new study 89% success where BMAC alone only showed 75% success.

arasota County Commissioners recently agreed to a $8.6 million purchase of land for the Legacy Trail 7.5 mile extension. The plan is to extend the existing near 11-mile trail into a multiuse paved pathway to Payne Park. Friends of the Legacy Trail say “Once built, the 175,000 annual users could quickly double as the trail reaches the urban core of the City of Sarasota.” There are still obstacles to overcome. FLT says the County still needs to “identify” another $11 million to realize the sale by December of 2017. But the FLT “commend the County staff and Commissioners for making this substantial initial commitment for the Legacy Trail.” For more information, visit FriendsOf TheLegacyTrail.org.

Loving Your Healthy (Any)Body » by Ellyn Santiago

There’s a lot of talk about body positivity these days; women realizing that the so-called ‘ideal’ is just that: so-called. It is possible to love yourself if you’re underweight or overweight and we should love ourselves and our bodies, but we should also make sure the body we love is a healthy body – no matter the size. 12 MAY 2017

FIT941.COM

BEFORE Hannah’s Story

“The idea of what a great body is has evolved just as humans have evolved; almost as if it's a trend to be thin or to have curvy hips. But one thing is for sure, women often want the opposite of what they are. It is so crucial to first love yourself for who you are. But I believe in striving to be my best self, day in and day out. I have always been naturally thin. Growing up, I was always teased in school. People would call me anorexic and bulimic among other cruel names. I'd get the ‘someone get this girl a double whopper’ spiel. People thought I was incapable of doing certain things for fear I would ‘snap in two.’ I won't lie to you and say that I didn't enjoy being thin or that I didn't have the goal to wear the same size jeans from freshman year through senior. But in my mind, I was healthy and I was happy with the way I looked. All while eating whatever I wanted and every two hours. I stayed that way until after my freshman year of college. That is when it became socially popular to shame thin women for not being ‘real;’ the new ‘real’ woman had gigantic boobs, a big butt, and nice ‘toned’ legs for days. I was sitting down at work one day and the CrossFit games were on television. Though the women on the TV didn't have all the features stated above, they had exactly what I wanted. They were strong and beautiful; their bodies were fit while still having curves. They could throw around weight, run fast and defy all challenges they put in front of them. That night, I decided it was time for me to gain some weight and become like them. I started doing CrossFit in October of 2013 and I never looked back. My starting weight was 95 pounds while standing at 5’ 9” I was working out every morning at 6 a.m. for my first year

AFTER and a half. My body fat was around 7 to 9 percent and I had almost nothing to transform into muscle. It has taken me three years to gain 45 pounds in lean muscle. This has only been achieved because of my nutritional changes and dedication to working out between three and five times a week. It has been exceptionally hard. I had braces for two of these years that prohibited me from eating a lot of good foods. I have had injuries that set me back and not allowed me to work out. And I have suffered through a deep depression that took away my will to get out of bed in the morning to do anything. But now my braces are off. I am injury free (for the time being; I am extremely clumsy) and while you don't just suddenly stop having depression, mine is at bay. I was able to pull myself through and realize I am capable of accomplishing whatever I want. I deserve to be happy and take part in my life. I won't say I don't still have problems getting to the gym or that I don't sit down with some Ben and Jerry’s and go to town, but today I am better than I have ever been. I am happy with body and I love the way my life is going. CrossFit has given me a love for myself that I never had before.”

Caroline’s Story

“I believe that we should be able to love ourselves regardless of our body type, but that is also something that society has to work on as well. Regardless of our weight I do think we should always look out for our health, not just to be fit or skinny, but to make sure that our bodies are in proper working condition. Growing up I was always the chubby sibling, I still am really, but not even because I was that overweight, it was just because I had some tummy fat compared to my naturally-skinny sister and body-builder bother. Don't get me wrong, I've never

CAROLINE blamed how I feel about myself on my siblings, but when I would go to my sister’s modeling shoot and I would ask my mother, Why I couldn't do what she did? Why didn't they want to take pictures of me too? She’d say I wasn't the ‘look’ they were going for. That wouldn't really help my self-image. But what does that even mean? If someone looks good in your clothes wouldn't you want them to advertise your clothes for them regardless there size? So that would really get to me, it still does actually. Even where I'm working now we only hire pretty people; which is completely ridiculous, but they say it’s because ‘They're not the look we want,' but then at the same time we also do modeling shoots for our clothing line and they've asked multiple coworkers of mine to do a shoot but never me. So once again I'm not the ‘look’ they're going for. It’s like I'm pretty enough to model but not pretty enough to represent their brand. It may not feel like a big deal to some people, but it really gets to me sometimes. Currently, I am working out and doing Pilates classes. I usually go four times a week early morning and later in the day. I won't lie about it; I started working out for the wrong reasons. All I wanted was to look a certain way so everyone would find me beautiful. I wanted to be accepted by everyone around me. It took a while to realize that it shouldn't matter what anyone one else thinks of me; if people really would look down on me cause I'm a bigger girl, those aren't the kind of people I want in my life. I am now more comfortable in my body then I have ever been; once I let go of the notion of what I should look like and stopped stressing about what I'm eating, I became so much happier. I do Pilates now to keep me heathy and happy. It took a very long time for me to be happy with myself, and I'm not all the time – everyone has their off days – but it’s a work in progress that one day I hope will be completed so I can truly love myself without any regards.”

Endurance House is your local one-stop-shop for running, cycling, and swimming in the Sarasota/Bradenton area. It is a national franchise with 16 stores across the country. erry Johnson had a 25 year career in engineering and information technology. He’d completed his first triathlon in 1987 sans training, and something clicked, as he says, and a seed was planted. But over the course of his career, while he did run and bike, he wasn’t committed; time did not allow it. But all the while, he says, he had “the desire to do something more meaningful with my career and life.” After a number of years without a regular commitment to being active, he got back in the saddle: he had a “realization that my outlook on life was always much better when I was more active I reprioritized my schedule to allow for more exercise.” Jerry completed a number of organized runs and several Sprint and Olympic distance triathlons from 2006-2010, but in 2011 and 2012; he completed two half-ironman events which led to him the Wisconsin Ironman in 2012… and to repeat in September of 2017.

Still active in his IT career, he wanted to “embark on a new career, one that would be more in keeping with the things he was passionate about.” Running, biking, and swimming were his passion. So the mid-westerner packed up his family with partner in life and business, Amy, and headed where his very smart and savvy parents landed: Sarasota and it was in the 941 where thought a store that offered a year-round training environment was made to order.

“Ironman distance events are the ultimate test of endurance in triathlon, but triathlon is more than just Ironman. There are much shorter events and many events geared specifically toward beginners,” Jerry says. “Triathlon is a sport that minimizes single-sport burnout and let’s individuals participate for a whole lifetime.”

As Jerry explains, “The Endurance House concept is designed to make all customers feel welcome and comfortable, regardless of their experience or fitness level. They are built as a community to be a place where people can gather to encourage, learn, tell stories, and help each other move in the direction they’d like to go.”

J

Enter Endurance House. Today, Endurance House has not only endured, it has thrived. Jerry’s dream to provide “gold standard guest service to triathletes, runners, and walkers of all abilities in a genuine and encouraging atmosphere” was realized. Endurance House specializes in bike and shoe fitting and in helping to prepare folks for a triathlon, from the beginner to the elite athlete.

Jerry says that at Endurance House they pride themselves in having the “right processes and tools to make sure you get into the right gear in all disciplines; swim, bike, and run.” Their Personal Movement Profile (PMP) for shoe fitting is a transparent process where you can see the difference between shoes, not just blindly trusting them. And Endurance House’s state-of-the-art Guru-automated fit bike makes bike sizing and bike fitting a smooth process that takes all of the mechanics of adjustments out of the fitting equation, letting you compare multiple bikes and sizes at the touch of a button…while you are pedaling. While Endurance House is geared to satisfy the needs of super competitive athletes, when it comes to Redefining Your Possible, it is all about the everyday athletes, the ones that just want to see what they can do, who just want to finish, or maybe finish a little faster than the last time. For more information about Endurance House including hours, services, product lines and much more, visit them at 5434 Lockwood Ridge Road in Bradenton, call 941-727-4411 or check out their website at SuncoastEnduranceHouse.com.

METABOLISM-BOOSTING

ant to boost your metabolism beyond the kick-in-the-butt from exercise? Besides the non-stimulant thermogenic supplements a good protein and good carb snack before or after a workout is a great option.

Nuts and seeds are a chips or salt-lovers choice. The cool thing about nuts and seeds is that you can create a mix and store in your fridge or cupboard and grab when you need a metabolism jump-start. And in that mix, you can toss in some dried fruits and even very dark chocolate chips would make a mix even tastier and pack a bigger metabolism punch.

After a workout, while you may feel pumped and not thinking about eating a thing, your muscles need a fillup of nutrients if you’re goal is to develop stronger and denser muscle tissue, so eat right after that workout; your muscles will thank you and they’ll show it. So if the goal is muscle building or weight loss, within a half hour post workout, eat a quick-acting protein and make sure to include good carbs to re-fuel. So to be your best self before or after your WOD, munch on these to both kick your metabolism up a notch and feed those muscles the nutrients lost during the workout. The key is moderation, though. Nuts have calories and fats, albeit good fats. Dried fruits have sugar, again a ‘sugar’ that’s good for your body, but you want to watch the amounts. One key is to focus on snack-type foods that are high in Vitamin C which some researchers say is a great booster.

Facts about Fruits: First, nuts and seeds, grains, peppers, olives, beans, tomatoes and even corn kernels are technically fruits according to the Mayo Clinic. But the science on the fruits we know as fruits is divided, though most nutrition experts agree that while some fruits, you know, the ones we think of when we think fruit, may not provide a big boost like other foods, fresh, dried, or freeze-dried fruits (in the case of the latter two, make sure they contain no added sugar or preservatives) is nonetheless a good choice. Berries, apricots and avocado (yes, it is a fruit) are healthy and when high in C – like grapefruit, especially -, kick it up a bit.

So Spicy: Capsaicin kicks butt when it comes to boosting metabolism, so when you’re snacking, add hot peppers to the mix; habañeros and jalapeños will do the trick. You could try a habanero chip recipe but they’re fairly complicated; go to a health food store and buy some organic capsaicin-rich snacks.

Mixing It Up: Here’s where you can get adventurous: toss almonds with a handful of dried apricots, toss in some chia, flax or pumpkin seeds and top with a kid-sized handful of dark chocolate chips (70% cacao or higher). Very, Very Veggie: There’s no doubt that veggie snacks are your friend. Asparagus, celery, kale, broccoli, kelp and spinach are among the best to choose from. A small, quick salad tossed with some peppers or seeds and you’re set. Or, try kale chips (make them yourself by simply removing the stems, place on parchment paper and season with good stuff like olive oil and maybe a bit of cayenne for an extra double boost and bake in a 350 oven for 5 or 10 minutes; don’t let them burn). Straight-up Protein – Roast a bunch of chicken drumsticks on a Sunday and refrigerate and you’ll have a perfect proteinrich cold chicken snack to much on (like a picnic!) Lean white meats, like turkey and chicken, deliver on protein. Turkey wings can be roasted (just like the Sunday chicken drumstickroasting marathon) and too can be grabbed as a quick shot of protein for metabolism-boost fuel. And don’t forget tuna! Don’t Forget the Tea - A last reminder: make sure to wash your snack down with green tea which is one known to be a beautiful fat-burning beverage. (Add vitamin C-rich lemon for taste and an extra kick.) What are your go-to post-WOD snacks, tell us on Facebook.

ow about a vacation fit for, well, a fitness aficionado? Maybe it’s extreme mountain climbing tens of thousands of feet into the sky in Asia, like Himalayas -- Everest or Karakoram (K2). Or jet south to scale the 4,000 mile-plus Andes in any one of seven South American countries from Bolivia to Venezuela. What about an insane surf adventure in Nosara, Costa Rica? How does scuba diving, at perhaps the best dive spot on the planet, Sipadan Island in Malaysia sound? Or if it’s CrossFit you dream about, try Extreme CrossFit in Maui. Then there’s mountain cycling in Chile and rafting in Patagonia. Or maybe you’ll do it all in a South African adventure that includes hiking, cycling, sea kayaking, and personal trainers on site.

cine to your to-do list. With online trip planning more common than ever, it’s easy to overlook one of the most important parts of the plan – making sure you don’t get sick, or worse, come down with a disease or illness that not only ruins your vacation but could linger well beyond the two weeks cycling the Australian outback. For example, before packing your board wax, you’ll need a typhoid shot for Costa Rica. Before you pack a wetsuit for your Malaysian trip, you’ll need vaccines against Hepatitis, among others. Before you check on shipping rates for your bike for that cycling sojourn in South Africa you’ll need to be inoculated against Yellow Fever. Before that life jacket gets packed for that rafting adventure down the Zambezi, you’ll need prescription malaria medications. And the list goes on and on depending on your destination, like a vaccine against Japanese Encephalitis if you’re thinking about the Himalayas.

enza virus, latex, gelatin, or preservatives in any part of the manufacturing process, for example.

Not every amazing location on the planet requires several vaccines, but you must be informed and prepared. And for those concerned about fitness and health, specifically not wanting to pump your body full of preservatives or mercury, vaccines without toxins, and often vegan-friendly, exist and you don’t have to go far to get them. Some are concerned about the ethylmercury (thimerosal) contained in some vaccines and in addition to mercury, other ingredients include egg proteins, gelatin, phenoxyethanol, and formaldehyde – the former two obviously unfriendly to vegetarians and vegans and the latter chemicals many would prefer not to have injected into their bodies. And while influenza season ends soon, it’s always flu season somewhere. The groundbreaking flu shot Flublok does not use mercury (thimerosal), eggs, antibiotics, formaldehyde, influ-

But it’s not just vaccines that a traveler planning a fitnessthemed overseas vacation, especially in tropical climates where Zika, malaria and cholera are not uncommon, should concern themselves with. The most common travel-related illness is traveler’s diarrhea (TD) contracted through contaminated water or food. But you can prevent an illness with some simple precautionary measures and supplies: carry water purification tablets and drink only bottled beverages (no ice cubes!); make sure meats and seafood are well-cooked; for motion sickness you can benefit from dermal patches; for high altitude travel, think mountain climbing 20,000 feet in the air, there’s easy-to-carry canned oxygen products; and to prevent Zika, use mosquito repellent and netting. If you feel overwhelmed, don’t. Right here in the 941 we have access to three Passport Health locations and the place for adventure travel gear, Environeers, carry mosquito netting, water purification and filtration products, hydration and medical kits. Passport Health provides motion sickness and TD medications, and Dengue prevention,

and carries products from mosquito prevention tools, steripens, masks, re-hydration salts, among myriad others. And Passport Health provides travel medicine, immunization services and “first class medical care, and rigorously trained medical staff.” In addition to travel medicine and vaccines, including the ones that are extremely difficult if not impossible to locate locally like anthrax, Japanese encephalitis, and yellow fever, it also provides specialty physical exams; lab test services; and vaccination records management services. “At Passport Health, we have the travel health medical resources and tools to ensure that no matter where in the world you’re headed, you will be protected, healthy and safe,” says Passport Health’s Dee Dee Eldridge, RN. And, Passport Health has a plethora of knowledge about how to stay safe and destination-specific tips on entry/exit requirements, travel health and safety tips, what to bring, do, and avoid wherever in this world you travel including, importantly, destination-specific tips on entry/exit requirements and offers passport and visa information and expertise, can help expedite the vis and passport process; they even have a concierge program that does everything for you. 22 MAY 2017

And while Passport covers the travel health base, Environeers hooks you up with the gear you’ll need. They’ve been helping local folks for a quarter of a century with supplies and advice for any adventure trip, from an African safari to a Bolivian mountain climb. Okay, so now you can start packing. Don’t forget the sunscreen. Founded in 1994, Passport Health is the largest travel health provider in the country with three locations in the 941. lexa Baroncelli, a soft-spoken and petite high schooler, drilled like the Israeli Special Forces at Krav Maga Manatee with one goal in mind.

“I [wanted to] feel safe in any situation,” Alexa says in a video about her experience. “It’s especially good for a young girl like me.” Alexa’s decision to take the All Women Empowered (AWE!) self-defense course at Krav Maga Manatee was a wise one. One out of every six American women from age 12 to age 65 has been or will be assaulted, with women aged 18 to 34 at the highest risk for an attack (with college-age particularly vulnerable). And, as terrifying as that is, according to the federal Bureau of Justice statistics, police response time for an assault ranges from 5 minutes to an hour or more, though the average minimum response time is 11 minutes to an hour or even more. So best case, you’re on your own for 11 minutes. A lot can happen in that time. It’s scary. But it doesn’t have to be. Fifty-something Candi says the AWE! self-defense course at Krav Maga Manatee changed her life. “I have emerged as a confident woman, aware of my surround-

ings, at all times. I never want to be attacked, however, I am equipped with the skills and mental attitude that will ultimately save my life,” she says. And importantly, she adds, AWE! is for all women, no matter their age or level of physical fitness; John Brockhoff and his staff will get you into shape. “We had a range of ages in our class, including three of us in our 50’s,” Candi says. Indeed, in March, a 70-year-old Sarasota County woman was attacked in her own home. By someone she knew, trusted. “You have to arm yourself with the tools you need to feel powerful, in any situation,” Candi says. John says his class is for every woman. “Whether you are a mom with children to protect, a working female in the workforce, a single female, an athlete who works out in unfamiliar locations, a student going off to college or simply a woman who wants to be empowered, this class is life-changing. You will leave this class knowing you have what it takes to avoid being a victim and to protect you and those you love.” Krav Maga Manatee’s AWE! self-defense course, a five-class series with each class lasting 1 ½ hours, is, John says, based on the techniques used by the Israeli army, called Krav Maga. Not a workout class per se, though John says “they’ll be sweating and getting the heart rate up,” it is a challenging course but if Candi can do it, so can you. John explains the course teaches women how to defend against attackers, free themselves from an assault, and respond appropriately when threatened. “Women will gain awareness of dangers and have opportunities to apply skills in live attack simulations with detailed coaching and feedback,” John says, adding that at the end of the course there are simulated, but very realistic attacks “to make sure the women feel comfortable fighting back when attacked and that they leave empowered.” And take Candi’s advice: “Grab your daughters, mothers, aunts, neighbors, and friends and let’s all band together so that women will no longer be victims.”

or Sarasota students, the last day of school is June 6 and for Manatee County school kids, the last day is May 31. YMCA summer camps begin in Sarasota on June 7 and in Manatee County, on June 5. There are so many options for a summer camp experience at the Sarasota and Manatee county YMCA’s that they won’t all fit in our pages! Let’s just say that you-name-it, they have it: Arts to UK-style soccer, adventure to tennis, gymnastics to swim, ‘kinder’ to teen, leaders and lifeguard, expeditions and sports and that’s not the half of it. But it’s not just the Y’s that provide great summer camps: community centers and churches, youth clubs and parks. Here’s some contact information for a curated list Fit941 thinks may be a great fit for you and your kids, but by no means includes all summer caps – and there are plenty!

Exercising For Two

Working out while pregnant isn’t just good for mom, baby benefits, too

e may be preaching to the choir here, but suffice to say essentially everything a pregnant woman does, her unborn does too; they’re along for the ride. So it stands to reason the healthier a soon-to-be mom is the

healthier too will be her baby. Let’s just debunk right here that aerobic exercise, you know even a brisk walk, might induce labor, exercise increase the chances of low-birth weight, tooearly delivery, or miscarriage – it’s just not true.

Not only should expectant women walk, they should do that and more. When done safely and smartly (See Do’s and Don’ts and When Exercising), not only is physical moderate aerobic exercise and activity good for mommy, it has the potential to be significant for the unborn child’s future health. According to the University of Virginia School of Medicine evidence suggest myriad diseases are influenced by the health of a pregnant woman for their developing offspring. Researchers at the Berne Center say “the amount of exercise you have during pregnancy and … has a distinct molecular consequence on your child, and that allows them to be, essentially, more fit.” Well there you have it. Don’t take it from us, take it from the scientists. Or even better, from local fitness professionals and trainers who not only talk the talk but have, literally, walked the walk: working out while pregnant and in one case, during a high risk pregnancy.

CrossFit owner/trainer Beth Vannata

“I found out I was pregnant at the peak of my training. I was hitting personal records in the gym regularly, and I felt like I was in the best shape of my life. After talking with my midwife at my first appointment, she gave me the go-ahead to continue working out, but to be sure to listen to my body. As my pregnancy progressed, the workouts definitely got harder. I had to slow down my intensity and had to modify movements such as burpees and box jumps to protect myself and baby. I maintained a threeto-four day a week Beth Vannata regimen, focusing on good form, breathing and proper nutrition until the day after my due date (my baby was born four days late, with no drugs and a quick labor that lasted less than five hours). Post pregnancy, I bounced back very quickly and was back in the gym four weeks after giving birth. My cardiovascular endurance was the quickest to return, while abdominal strength has been a bit slower. I believe that working out during my pregnancy allowed me to recover and to lose my baby weight a lot quicker than had I remained sedentary.”

Certified personal trainer Christina Valenza

“Fitness has been a part of my life since I started lifting weights and taking aerobics classes in high school. In college, I sat on the advisory board for the Wellness Center at the University of Miami (representing the Panhellenic Council). When I was recruited as a health club manager in 2001, I jumped at the career opportunity. I became pregnant in the summer of

2007, and much to my dismay was diagnosed 'high risk' and at 11 weeks I underwent a major surgery to hold the pregnancy to term. Determined to stay fit and healthy, I worked with my obstetrician to find an exercise routine to suit my individual needs. I lifted weights, walked, used the elliptical trainer and incorporated yoga into my workouts, maintaining a low to moderate intensity. During my last trimester, I was put on restrictions but continued to walk and do body weight squats and modified push-ups and planks. I had a scheduled Caesarian birth at 39 weeks, during which my obstetrician complemented me on the strength of my core muscles (which he required assistance from two nurses to separate for the delivery). I was released to resume exercise four weeks later and slowly returned to a normal workout routine. It was at this time that I decided to get certified as a personal trainer and learn to coach other women through fit pregnancy, delivery and postpartum recovery. In late 2010, I began working with Nilofer Khatri, a pediatric dentist who had serious back and neck issues from a prior accident and surgeries. Her goal at that time was to get healthy before starting a family. We worked together for several months to lower her body fat and increase strength, flexibility and balance. When she became pregnant with her first, the workouts continued. Nilo maintained a healthy lifestyle throughout three pregnancies under my guidance. I modified the training program to reflect what best suited her needs, with a heavy focus on core stabilization and breathing technique. After each pregnancy she was cleared to resume exercise quickly and the goal at that time was to prepare for the next, as she now has three young children who were born in short succession. Fit pregnancies allowed her body to recover faster and gave her increased energy both during and after birth.”

Health and nutrition coach Michelle Leon

“Some new moms think once you get pregnant, you can no longer exercise, and that is simply not true. In fact exercise is very important even while you’re pregnant, and can help the body prepare for labor, as well as relives some common discomforts of pregnancy. It is common to fear exercise while

Do’s and Don’ts

• Before starting an exercise routine, speak with your OB-GYN • Eat enough healthy calories during your pregnancy, especially if adding moderate aerobic exercise (which is good for mom and baby!) • Avoid sports that could endanger you or your unborn baby (no pickup basketball or soccer games!) pregnant; however it is actually more commonly recommended, especially if you were already active before being pregnant. However, always speak with your healthcare provider and listen to your body. I recommend planning your days and times during the week when you will be exercising. Thirty minutes a day, all or most days is very beneficial if you are feeling up to it. However, 20 minutes for three or four days is still beneficial. Michelle Leon The important thing is to get the blood flowing. If you participated in an exercise prior to being pregnant, it is likely OK that you continue. However if you haven’t there are great low impact options such as walking, yoga and dance. You will want to avoid high intensity workouts, and anything can have a high fall risk. Also it is very important to remember that weight loss is not your goal; you should be consuming enough calories for pregnancy with your activity, as well as lots of water before, during and post workout. You’ll find that being active during pregnancy can help: relieve stress; boost endorphins; prevent or treat gestational diabetes; help reduce back aches, swelling, constipation and bloating; help you sleep better; and, will help during labor. Plus, it will be easier to get back into shape post-baby.”

weight more quickly. Bonus: moderate intensity exercise may ward off the post baby blues. So grab that running stroller, and get outside with your baby. Speaking of postpartum, exercise helps improve mood and, when combined with heathy eating, can help shed that baby
