publisher's note ummer is coming to an end, and that time of year that we love and dread is quickly approaching—the return of the snowbirds. With their presence, they bring traffic, but they also bring their loyal business. It was about 1 year ago today that we just started to work on our very first issue of Fit941. We were confident right from the beginning that we had a hit on our hands because this community has such a strong interest in what we do and what we stand for. The year round community, as well as our part-time residents, have been an enormous support to the magazine and all other aspects of our media and events. From the entire team, thank you. We have grown stronger with each issue, and there are no signs of slowing down this fitness freight train.

S

Our feature story is about the enormous yoga community in Sarasota and Manatee counties. I have encountered more than 40 yoga studios in the community. This is clearly a strong powerful group with a great deal of influence in the area. Since the yoga community is so vast, we decided to do something new by holding an cover casting call photo shoot at The Polo Grill. It was such a great time that we have decided whenever possible this will be our method of finding our future cover shots. We had over 20 yogis come out; sample a glass of wine; taste some healthy appetizers; strike a few posese and get to know us a little—all in all, a lot of fun. We found it extremely difficult to pick just one person for the cover because each person that came in had something special about them worthy of being chosen. In the end, the panel went with a young woman who showed up just as we were about to pack up and go home. Victoria Chadsey is an extreme sports enthusiast. If she isn’t doing flips on the bay wake-boarding, hunting in camo, sky-diving, rock climbing and zip-lining, she’s teaching yoga at the Ritz Carlton here in Sarasota, where she is the fitness/activities director. Victoria is a great example of what Fit941 is all about. We are happy to have her as our latest cover model. In the 2 months leading up to the close of creating this next issue, we met so many great people, and expanded our activities compilation which we send out weekly in Fit941’s eFit newsletter. If you want to know what is going on in the fitness and nutrition world locally, you must sign up for our free eNewsletter by going to our website Fit941.com, and register to receive this weekly electronic tome—full of all the races, events, coupons and specials from our partners— just what you need to feel comfortable that you won’t miss a beat. Well, we haven’t even had a full year under our belt, and we’ve already surpassed our personal goals for growth. Again, to all of you, partners, readers, full timers and snowbirds, thanks! Our mission from the very start was to be the resource for all that relates to fitness, nutrition, health and wellness in our great community—and to be the source of timely information, education and inspiration for fitness and health. I love this job!

M

eet little Kendra Gough, don’t let her size or age fool you. At 7 years old Kendra is a “true powerhouse in the pool” says her coach, Maria Barringhaus, owner and head coach of School of Fish Swimming Lessons in Bradenton. A natural in the water ever since her dad can remember he decided she start lessons with Miss Maria at age 4. “I don’t want to be the kind of dad that pushes too hard, but she has this internal drive and actually competes against herself. She asked me a long time ago to time her swimming 2 lengths of the pool, when I told her the time, and she immediately said ‘I’m going again, and I’m going to beat that time’ It was amazing to see this competitive nature, yet she was only competing against herself ”. From the very beginning of her lessons, Kendra, not only beat all the girls in her age group in races, but she was moved up with girls 2 years older and beat all of them as well. They decided to put her with boys her own age, easily beating them she went up against the boys 2 years older and wouldn’t you know it, she beat them too. Her strength comes from the drive and gym work with her dad, Mike Gough, owner of Athletic Edge. This sports performance specialist was the strength and conditioning coach for pro athletes including the NBA Toronto Raptors and the Cleveland Indians. Needless to say Kendra is in good hands when it comes to her future aspirations.

ngela’s Pure Salon is now offering Infrared-sauna sessions to help the body release toxins and environmental chemicals. The benefits don't stop there. With infrared sauna technology, individuals can also lose weight; relax; relieve unwanted pain; increase circulation and purify the skin. What a Difference a Year Makes

O

ne year ago today, Kristina Rich was about 90+ lbs heavier. Sometimes it takes somebody telling you that you’ll never reach a goal, to push you to vigorously get there. Kristina, had slowly gone from lean and mean, to about 207 lbs, with a 5’4’ body frame. Visiting many gyms and trainers in the past—she never got that internal ambition to make it stick. Her diet was typical and unhealthy. On her birthday, around July 2014, she decided that she was going to take another stab at getting into shape. She had previously worked with Derek Flaim, who now just recently opened his own training facility. Apprehensive, Flaim’s style was pretty heavy duty, intense and fast paced with mixed boxing and HIIT—she wasn’t sure if she could handle it. Deciding to start with half hour one on one session’s, patiently, he pushed her just enough. Eventually they started seeing great quick results. The half hour sessions turned into hour sessions and the intensity picked up. From once a week to twice a week to 3 times a week, she then began taking his full-blown classes with the fit groups she had once feared working with and she thrived. “No matter how much stress there was, Derek’s gym was my ‘Happy Place’, my stress disappeared the minute I walked in and when I left, I was in such a better state of mind” says Kristina. Kristina made it her mission to get to her goals through unbelievable commitment, super clean eating, and help from her trainer and great friend, Derek Flaim. She proved them all wrong —truly inspirational.

Are Your Shoes A Perfect Fit?

T

he Endurance House is introducing a very unique approach to insuring that individuals are getting the perfect shoes for their feet. Using a Personalized Movement Profile™ that consists of five phases: Consult, Move, Learn, Fit and Test Drive.

During the consult phase your Endurance Consultant will do an assessment of your history, personal goals and any injuries you may have. With that information they will have you put on “test shoes” that have no support to insure when they do the assessment they can show you a before and after on video. The second phase, Move, is taking the video of your feet running on a treadmill to show you the details of how you run specifically. The learning phase is when your Endurance Consultant will give you a full explanation of what he has seen and the results that the digital video program came up with during your running profile. Once you have completed these steps your consultant will provide you with several customized options that best suits you and your needs. The final phase is giving you the ability to “test drive” whatever shoe you truly want, right there on a treadmill.

or years Yoga has been dominated by women, even though it was originally created for men to prepare their bodies for war. On Monday nights at 6pm, Soul Yoga Sanctuary is now introducing a “Men’s Only” yoga class that is specifically geared towards joint and muscle mobilization. If that’s not enough encouragement, they finish the class off with a locally brewed beer. Soul Yoga Sanctuary is a space that offers many different empowering forms of yoga. They were created to offer people the ability to challenge and nourish their bodies all in one. Along with updating their original space and expanding off of Jaco Boxing, they are expanding their services to assist everyone who wants to develop strength, flexibility and inner peace. On Wednesday nights at 5:45pm and Saturday mornings at 8am Soul Yoga Sanctuary is offering a special boxing and yoga package where you can take both classes for only $16 instead of paying full price for both. They encourage people to come in at any time to take a tour of their facility to experience the impact yoga can have on a person. Save a Hero

G

reenZone Heroes is a recently established benefit corporation that dedicates their time and energy towards helping local Vets with long term assistance. Alexandra Coe is their Chief Sustainability Officer, as well as the director of Initiatives and Special Projects. Sustainability is a huge buzzword these days, yet few know how to create sustainable models. GreenZone Heroes does exactly that by funding its own initiatives with their own corporate profits. This model allows them to create programs that are long-lasting and truly help our veterans develop purposeful civilian lives. GreenZone Heroes (GZH) will have four large events each year and will also offer other adventure activities such as land navigation and survival courses. Some future events will have land navigation components mixed with the obstacle course activities. They are also developing a walking event based on the German tradition of the Volksmarch. The plan is to have a series of walks that will follow this model and people can collect patches for each walk. This is yet another aspect of their community building approach with the company. (A volksmarch is a noncompetitive 3.1 mile (5 km) or 6.2 mile (10 km) walk. It's not a pledge walk, it's not a race, it is a fun activity you do with a club, with your family, with your pet, or all by yourself.) Currently working with two veterans’ organizations, Veterans for Common Sense and SRQVets, they are giving away 250 spectator tickets to veterans who register at their Veterans Connection area of their website. Some examples of what GreenZone Heroes puts their efforts and funding towards are; Alternative Post-Traumatic Therapies such as Agriculture, the Arts and Extreme Sports; Opportunities for Homeless and Dishonorably-Discharged Vets; Adaptive Athlete Support, Training and Support for Qualified Athletes; Family and Marriage Counseling; Job and Life Skills Education; USF “Vet’s To Chefs” Mobile Food Truck and Challenging Expedition Team Trips and The‘VisionQuest’ Project.

Get serious about your fitness success!

For their first event, GreenZone Heroes is having an inaugural obstacle course adventure race on Saturday, November 7th, 2015. It’s a chance to get out and have real fun. You’ll enjoy twenty-eight (28) obstacles over a 5K land and water course. In addition to the obstacle course, there will be a variety of other activities to be part of, like the puzzle hunt, where you can use your wits to find clues and win prizes. Try pull-ups for heroes and take home a great GZH souvenir. Veterans will have the opportunity to meet fellow veterans and be part of the Veterans’ Connection. For more information on GreenZone Heroes, their events and their Veterans Connection program, please visit GreenZoneHeroes.com.

The biggest issue that everybody has with fat is that once it is gained, it’s hard to get rid of! The moment it’s lost, it’s too easy to gain back. That’s because fat cells never truly disappear, they shrink—until now. Despite diet and exercise, fat cells accumulate in the body and can be very tough to get rid of. CoolSculpting technology uses controlled cooling (Cryolipolysis) to target, freeze and kill only these fat cells. In the weeks to follow, these terminated fat cells are naturally eliminated from the body. It's the only FDA-cleared fat freezing technology—the treatment is safe on your body, but tough on stubborn fat. A session lasts only 60 minutes, making it quite possibly one of the best-used hours of your life. Many report feeling a burst of cold air, followed by dull pressure. During their session, some guests read, get work done—or even sleep. Cool Sculpting results are long-term, as treated fat cells are gone for good. reat news, Sarasota…a brand new hot yoga studio is opening this fall in Sarasota! Known for its numerous health benefits, hot yoga hit the shores of America over 40 years ago and it’s devotees grow stronger every year. Hot Yoga practitioners enter a heated yoga room to perform a set sequence of postures specifically designed to flush toxins and restore overall well-being. Native New Yorker, Yolanda Nash, has recently relocated with her family to the Sarasota area and is eagerly awaiting the opening of her third studio. Pioneering the hot yoga movement of New York, Nash opened the south shore of Long Island’s first hot yoga studio in Rockville Centre over 12 years ago. Following the success of her Long Island studio, Yolanda then opened her second studio in Rego Park, Queens. This balance is what allows both the beginner and seasoned practitioner to share the same space and receive equal attention and encouragement. She is thrilled to bring her experience to the Sarasota community! Her new hot yoga studio, located at the EXPO on Clark between Beneva and McIntosh, will boast an air filtration system, natural light, far infrared heat, and industrial dehumidifying system. Nourish Your Body in Sarasota

A

long with CROPjuice’s decision to open inside LA Fitness on Bee Ridge and Cattlemen back in April, they decided to expand their creative ability and develop unique smoothie blends for the public and for gym members. CROPjuice will be expanding their food items when they open their third location across from University Town Center Mall in late October/beginning of November and their fourth location in downtown Sarasota at the Ellis building on the Northeast corner of OrangeAve. and Main St, late in December/early 2016. CROPjuice is a raw, organic, cold pressed juice company that focuses on leafy green dense juice. They also offer a wide variety of fruit based juices, “mylks” and coconut libations as well. CROPjuice is known for their process of hand pouring their greens separately from the other ingredients. This way everyone knows exactly how many leafy greens they are consuming. Dark leafy greens are super foods that decrease sugar cravings, stabilize blood sugar, decrease inflammation and are powerful cancer fighters. Typical "green juices" are loaded with water dense veggies and a minimal amount of leafy greens. CROPjuice strives to educate people on the awareness of how beneficial cold pressed juices can be for the body. Their original location and juicing headquarters started in Gulf Gate, they plan on expanding this knowledge and nourishing juice throughout Sarasota. To learn more about juicing visit CropJuiceSRQ.com, or to try CROPjuice you can go to their original location at 2320 Gulf Gate Drive, their LAFitness location at Bee Ridge and Cattlemen or their newest University Location at 8211 Tourist Center Drive.

Introducing Senior Fit Camp

A

re you 55 or older and need to begin an exercise program, but don't know where to start?

Senior fit camp is an exercise program intended those 55 and older who want to improve their health & fitness in a small group setting. However, this is not a "class" where an instructor leads everyone through a series of moves and you just do your best to keep up! This program is closer to personal training, with more individual attention and focus on proper exercise form and execution, and with an education as to what (& where) muscles are working, and why you should do it. Modifications or substitute exercises will be provided for those with injuries or limitations. This is a "low-impact" program, which means easier on the joints窶馬o jumping exercises, no sprinting or running. The goal is to keep you moving and make the sessions progressively more challenging. You can expect to use resistance bands, medicine balls, stability balls, dumbbells, and bodyweight resistance. The program is primarily indoors, but we may do a bit of outdoor stuff to keep it fun and interesting. For more information, contact JD Doyle, Owner/Director of Shape Up Sarasota Boot Camp at 941-685-1081.

Say Good Bye Double Chin

B

radley Abrams, D.O. conveniently located at 3328 Bee Ridge Road in Sarasota is one of the first and only physicians chosen in the SarasotaBradenton - North Port area to be trained by Kythera Biopharmaceuticals Inc. in the treatment of submental fat, known as a “double-chin” using FDA approved injectable KybellaTM. KybellaTM is the first and only FDA-approved nonsurgical treatment that causes the destruction of fat cells when injected into subcutaneous fat and improves the chin profile appearance. The number of treatment sessions varies and a customized treatment plan designed between the patient and Dr. Abrams is necessary to determine the number of injections needed. Most patients experience visible contouring of their chin in two to four treatment sessions spaced at least one month apart. Up to 6 treatments may be administered. Dr. Abrams reviews each of his patient’s goals to determine the appropriate treatments plan. “Many patients visiting for non-invasive treatments of lines, and wrinkles are bothered by their double chin but do not want to undergo surgery or liposuctions which are expensive and invasive procedures with a long recovery time” explains Dr. Abrams. “This newly FDA approved injectable KybellaTM is non-invasive and meets the needs of my patients by treating and eliminating the fat located under the chin in two to four treatment sessions. Once results are achieved with KybellaTM, there is no need for further treatments” added Abrams. “Each treatment takes about 15 minutes and the results are noticeable within the first two injections with minimal swelling and very little downtime. I sometimes inject KybellaTM in combination with other fillers to save time and achieve best overall rejuvenation results” explains Dr. Abrams. If you would like to set up a consultation or learn more, visit Abrams Derm.com or call 941-926-2300.

Prepare Your Body for

30 days of Yoga in 7 Steps by Jaqlyn Tinaro

Do not eat at least 2-3 hours before class, it can cause nausea and slow down the body. Add some heat to that and chances of seeing lunch for a second time are high. A few hours before and immediately after a workout is the best time to have fruits. They will help with hydration, energy and recovery. For hydration —water with minerals are ideal. (Make sure it’s just plain water) Bring 2 bottles to class; 1 frozen and 1 cold or room temperature. The frozen bottle is for the head and the hands to cool the body down, and the other is for small sips during class. Essentials to bring to class; Yoga mat and towel (renting options are available depending on location);Hand towel; Essential Oils to help energize the body and bring focus—plus they smell great (put 1 drop in each corner of the yoga towel) Fitted clothes are best for Hot Yoga, leggings and a good sports bra could never steer a woman wrong, shirts are subjective, but chances are they’ll be sweat through and it will be off half way through the class. For men, shorts that can be moved in freely and cover the body properly. For Aerial Yoga—be sure to wear a fitted sleeve top (no tanks or vests) this will help protect armpits from friction. Honor yourself and your classmates. Look in your own eyes, breathe deep, focus and embrace the personal time to strengthen your body, mind and spirit. Although these classes can be tough, keep noises and chatter to a minimum. Don’t bother wearing perfumes or lotions; the body will sweat it off; make the skin slippery and possibly interfere with some of the positions. Leave the jewelry at home—necklaces, bracelets and watches really do get in the way. For yoga studios offering a special 30 day yoga challenge in honor of National Yoga Month, mention Fit941 Magazine for special pricing at Body Heat Yoga (BodyHeatSarasota.com) and for new members of Soul Yoga Sanctuary (SarasotaPowerYoga.com). Jaqlyn Tinaro has used yoga daily for many years as a way to maintain flexibility and stay pain free, for more information you can contact her through VirtueOfHealth.com or (941) 724-6399. REJUVENATE YOUR LIFE! he human connection is so important in both personal and professional settings. In this new age of technology that ideal has become misconstrued and often overlooked with the majority of us going to the, "text message" as opposed to the face to face connection when it comes to our interactions. Most of these decisions are made out of convenience but underlying causes dictate it can be because of lack of confidence due to one's appearance. Growing older certainly does not mean your health and appearance should decline. In fact the growing community here in the 941 has never looked better. Restore your youthful glow, refresh your look and feel confident again about the personal and professional impression you make. There is only one you! If you want to combat the signs of aging but maintain a natural look, facial rejuvenation may be right for you.

T

What is Facial Rejuvenation? Facial rejuvenation refers to a variety of nonsurgical procedures to address the signs of aging such as loose skin, loss of volume, wrinkling, and skin discoloration. With so many options available, you are certain to find the right one for you to get the results you want, all without surgery. Facial rejuvenation procedures use energy transfer, fillers, or surface correction to restore your face to its youthful appearance. Lines are minimized, volume is restored, and tone and texture are corrected. 26 FIT941.com

Facial Rejuvenation Options in Sarasota Ulthera uses the energy from sound to lift the brow, chin, neck, and smooth the dÊcolletage area. This is the only nonsurgical lift that is FDA approved. Your skin will naturally tighten and tone through the production of new collagen, all without surgery. RF Therapy uses energy from radio waves to kick start collagen production to reduce wrinkles and sagging; and firm and contour facial skin. This option is also great if you want to reduce the appearance of scars. Antiwrinkle Fillers reduce the appearance of lines. Juvederm, Restylane, Sculptra, and Radiesse are the most successful products and procedures used. These injectables temporarily add volume for instant natural-looking results that can last up to one year. Injectables can be used for shallow and deep wrinkles and folds, especially around the nose and mouth. BotoxŽ Cosmetic when injected into the muscle improves the look of crow’s feet and frown lines. By targeting the underlying cause of these wrinkles, you restore your youthful look quickly and without surgery. You will lose the wrinkles without losing the ability to show facial expression, which is key in maintaining your natural appearance.

Growing older certainly does not mean your health and appearance should decline. In fact the growing community here in the 941 has never looked better. Chemical Peels are applied to the surface of the skin. If you want to enhance the appearance and smooth the texture of the skin on your face, then this is the facial rejuvenation procedure for you. Your complexion will be brighter, with a more even skin tone and the appearance of lines is reduced. But perhaps the most promising and latest development in facial rejuvenation is: PRP Biocellular Facelift is a nonsurgical procedure that uses a combination of antiwrinkle fillers to first contour the face and then injection of activated platelet-rich plasma (PRP) harvested from the patient to stimulate the growth of new collagen, fatty tissue and blood vessels. It is the latest technologic advancement and improvement over the “Vampire Facelift’. It is mother nature’s ultimate all natural filler that is made from you. Using proprietary technology we are able to enhance your PRP to form a firm though supple filler. There’s no chance of an adverse reaction and it lasts for up to 2 years instead of months with the synthetic fillers.

PRP from whole blood is increasingly utilized to help heal joints and soft tissue. It has a number of uses in Aesthetic Medicine as well. Similarly, fat is a rich source of ADRCs (Adipose Derived Regenerative Cells) which are used to enhance a variety of aesthetic procedures from microneedling for skin and scalp rejuvenation, to supporting the success of fat grafting and incisional and ablative aesthetic procedures. Minimal risk The facial rejuvenation techniques performed during Facial Rejuvenation require no surgery and are minimally invasive. They can all be safely performed in the office, often in one visit, so these procedures are perfect for those with the, "on the go" lifestyle. These are all proven techniques to provide you the renewed youthful appearance you want and the safety you demand. Gerald Grubbs, MD is board certified and is the founder of RevitaLife Vitality Center of Sarasota, a premier anti aging and cosmetic practice. Slow Down that Workout by Jaqlyn Tinaro

The key factor it has to weight loss is by increasing your muscle and stimulating your metabolism due the fact that the more muscle you have, the more calories your body will burn to maintain the muscle. ave you ever tried doing a leg press in slow motion? Could you come to full extension on the bench press and retract all the weight in 20 seconds or more? Whether it’s a leg press or even a push up, it is proven that if you slow down your movement you’re more likely to have better form, prevent muscle strain injury and therefore receive an even more intense muscle strengthening workout.

H

Super slow training was originally championed by bodybuilders back in the 1940s. It was referred to as “muscle contraction with measured movement,” and involved a 10-second lifting period followed by a 10-second lowering pe28 FIT941.com

riod. In traditional weight training, you typically take about 1-2 seconds to lift a weight, and slightly longer to lower the weight. Rather than doing multiple sets for each body part, super slow workouts typically involve just one long set for each exercise, and each set is performed until your muscles are completely fatigued, or within a 30 second time period. The idea behind super slow training is that by decreasing the speed of movement, you can create more tension in your muscles. The more fatigued the muscle, the more your muscle will respond by growing, thus making you stronger and potentially boosting your metabolism.

The key factor it has to weight loss is by increasing your muscle and stimulating your metabolism due the fact that the more muscle you have, the more calories your body will burn to maintain the muscle. Your metabolism will increase regardless of exercise once your muscle percentage starts to increase. In addition to weight loss, there are many benefits that have been scientifically proven and reported due to slower paced exercises; for example, toning, firming and slowing down muscle break down and wasting. It’s also known to increase bone density, prevent osteoporosis, lower blood pressure and improve cholesterol. Many people have mentioned effects of reducing arthritis discomfort, reducing back pain, stress and anxiety, as well as improving balance, stability and memory. In Sarasota, many people are thrilled about their bodies and their enhanced lifestyles after utilizing super slow workout techniques. Keith Jobin, a Certified Personal Trainer from True U Fitness, LLC states” super slow strength training has helped a great deal with our clients looking for everything from

weight loss to toning, firming, and even reducing high blood pressure. Since our opening on January 1st, 2015, we have seen a total weight loss within our facility of 78lbs, chronic back pain has been completely alleviated, blood pressure reduced to now normal levels and more flexibility, strength and balance than ever before.” The scope of these training methods is endless because it is meant for every person with no age restrictions. From younger individuals looking for assistance in strengthening every muscle group possible, to older individuals looking to be able to live pain free, all will benefit. “I came to SuperSlow Zone with a painful lower back, weak back muscles and painfully weak hands. My body was stiff and my walk was stiff. After 3 months my posture is straighter and I’m walking pain free. I can walk faster and lift heavier weights.” States Margarette, a 77 year old retiree using the super slow method. It takes some clients as little as 4 weeks to begin seeing and feeling those results, but on average 6 weeks to see and feel their body begin changing. An interesting fact about super slow workouts: While the workout is challenging, highly effective and an opportunity to get amazing results, you may perspire but very little. Facilities that specialize in super slow training try to keep their temperatures around 70 degrees to insure your body is focusing on the workout instead of perspiring. With this in mind, the chances of you having to change your clothes to get your workout in is slim to none as long as you are wearing clothes that are easy to move in. Thus, having a busy lifetime will not affect your ability to get your works outs in. The results to Super Slow training no matter your age, lifestyle, athletic level, injury level or body type are always the same; slow, steady and effective. Clients from 25-92 years of age have fallen in love with super slow strength training. ne of the oldest, yet still highly effective movements around; any “old school” weightlifter has worked with kettle bells at some point, but anyone can benefit from this goodie.

O

The kettle bell swing is a great tool, especially if done properly, to generate force and power from the hips and core. Once mastered, individuals can potentially swing a kettle bell at or above bodyweight. Aaron Weedo, owner of Cross Fit Lakewood Ranch, recommends starting out with something light at first. “Once you can comfortably perform 15-20 reps without any break in form, I would say move on to the next weight!” 1. The first step is to pick the bell up; maintain a tight midsection and lower the hips down to the bell. Keep your shoulders back and down with your head and chest upright. 2. The next step is to create some momentum with the kettle bell. To do this, pull your hips back while maintain a 30 FIT941.com

solid foundation on the floor with your feet. Then, squeeze your abs as tight as you can, thrust your hips forward and then stop as aggressively and controlled as you can at the tall position. 3. If done properly, the momentum created will cause the kettle bell to start to rise up in front of you. It is key to sit back through your heels and ensure your hamstrings and back muscles are keeping you upright and not the driving force in “lifting” the kettle bell. This is not a lift; this is a momentum or pendulum-like swing. (If you are new to this movement or have shoulder issues, you would stop at this point and not move on to step 4.) 4. The swing finishes with the kettle bell overhead, in line with the shoulders, hips, and ankles. From this position, allow the bell to drop back down between the legs and then re-load for the next repetition. A common fault we see above is letting the kettle bell pull you forward. This

shows a lack of control and one should lower the weight and focus more on getting upright and waiting for the kettle bell. With any core-to-extremity movement the biggest problem most people have is timing. You must be patient when you finish the swing, allowing the bell to almost glide up all by itself. Aaron Weedo is the owner of CrossFit Lakewood Ranch. He has been active and training his entire life and has been privately training clients for over ten years. Aaron has experience working with athletes of all types, all skills, all ages, and has helped develop a number of the coaches that you see training at many CrossFit gyms in the area. Aaron’s knowledge and experience in the strength and fitness world are highly sought after by not only professional athletes, but also by every day professionals as well. His motto of, “leave your ego at the door and your sweat on the floor,” is applied to all. Aaron can be contacted by email, CrossFitLWR@Gmail.com or by phone at (941) 907-0005.

CoolSculpting is the only non-surgical body contouring treatment that freezes and eliminates stubborn fat from your body.

Painlessly Re-Sculpt Your Body or years individuals with weight problems have been praying for the day when liposuction wouldn’t be the same invasive procedure it's known to be. Luckily those prayers have been answered by the Renowned Harvard University scientists, Dieter Manstein, MD and R. Rox Anderson, MD. Ironically they found through research that some children got dimples due to eating popsicles. The idea that cold can selectively affect and eliminate fat cells without damaging the skin or surrounding tissue was the insight behind Cryolipolysis, the proven science on which the CoolSculpting procedure is based.

F

So what is CoolSculpting exactly? CoolSculpting is the only non-surgical body contouring treatment that freezes and eliminates stubborn fat from the body. As mentioned previously it uses technology that is controlled cooling (Cryolipolysis) to target and kill only these fat cells. The technology extracts energy or heat from the tissue to cool fat cells and trigger a programmed cell death. In the weeks to follow, these fat cells are naturally eliminated from the body, resulting in long-term results due to that fact that the cells are now permanently gone as opposed to shrank. There are no needles, no special diets and no downtime. It is FDA cleared; safe, proven results without surgery or invasive procedures and only licensed medical professionals provide treatments.

How does it work? One CoolSculpting treatment takes one hour per area treated. It is as simple as laying down while they apply the piece of equipment to the local area. It is common to feel a suction sensation on the skin and then a cooling sensation that will typically go numb, other than 32 FIT941.com

that it is virtually painless. One area is about the size of a hand. Therefore, each "love-handle" would be considered one area, and the lower abdomen is typically considered two areas. It is possible to treat more than one area at a single office visit, but only one area at a time. To treat two areas takes just over two hours. For many patients, a second treatment in the same area may be beneficial since CoolSculpting removes about 25% of the fat cells per treatment. The fat cells that are damaged by the treatment are frozen and later absorbed by the body's own metabolic process and are gone permanently. Marie Gordan, practice administrator of RevitaLife Anti-Aging Center in Sarasota states, “I've been doing noninvasive aesthetic procedures for body contouring and fat reduction for about 8 years. Coolsculpting is by far the best on the market. It’s a great option for BEFORE

when diet and exercise won't get rid of that problem area. Some results can be appreciated in as early as 3 weeks, typical results take about 3-4 months to be fully realized, and therefore many patients schedule second treatments at that time. Results may vary from patient to patient but the overall satisfaction has been truly impressive. Thai Chau, Preceptor Physician Assistant of Ideal Image of Sarasota states, "The CoolSculpting procedure is quite comfortable and can permanently eliminate fat with no downtime. It's time to feel good about yourself again and CoolSculpting is an easy answer for your most stubborn areas of fat. CoolSculpting has created a new avenue for individuals to lose weight without going through the motions of discouragement when it comes difficulties of losing weight. It has great potential to give people the extra push they need, in order to keep the weight off. Due to the fact that treatments will have maximal effect by 3 months, to know whether or not additional treatments are needed will depend on the clinical exam provided by the practitioner. The key component to understand is once the fat is removed, it is gone for life. It is up to the patient to keep it off. For more information on CoolSculpting visit CoolSculpting.com or contact Ideal Image at (941) 388-9200 or RevitaLife Anti-Aging Center at (941) 315-6231

T

he Gulfcoast of Florida is a rapidly growing community with world-class amenities, including The Opera House, Ringling School of Art and Design and Siesta Key beach. In addition, the Sarasota Suncoast has a diverse and expansive yoga culture that is thriving and growing rapidly. There are studios located throughout the area and the community that offer all forms of Yoga for all levels of yogis from beginners to advanced practitioners. It is a great place for one to begin their Yoga journey, as there is a magnitude of Yoga variety to explore. Local teacher and owner of Soul Yoga Sanctuary, Kelli Jaco says, “Most people need to find what works for them. People will gravitate towards what works for their personal style. That is what is so great about Sarasota; there are different styles for everyone.” You can get down and sweaty with a Hot Bikram or Vinyasa class or you can slow it down with meditation or Restorative Yoga. If flying in the air is your style then an Aerial or Silks Yoga class may be for you. Learning alignment is a fundamental component of Yoga and through Hatha (an alignment style) you can create a solid foundation to root your practice. In Yoga, there are many styles throughout the world that are practiced and many more that are coming into existence. If you don’t jive with one form such as Vinyasa, you may find yourself more drawn to Yin or Hatha classes. The beauty of Yoga is there is no “one size fits all” theory and each day may be different. So who should practice Yoga? Everyone! Yoga is an activity that anyone can participate in one form or another. It has been widely used for mental clarity, rehabilitation therapy and stress reduction in recent years. According to Cheryl Chaffee from Garden of the Heart, “If I had a nickel for everyone who

said 'I can’t do yoga, I’m not flexible!' I would be a millionaire. If you don’t start you won’t get good at it.” Sometimes Yogis may find themselves discouraged if they have an experience of something that leaves them feeling defeated or confused. This may drive one away from something like Yoga. Kelly Prince, teacher and owner of Body Heat states it perfectly, “Some of us are unaware what Yoga is. The truth is that it can be whatever you’d like it to be, whatever works best for you. You can practice for the physical or mental benefits.” Whether you are in it for the physical or mental component, you inevitably get a little bit of both. Yoga can be a great workout or mental therapy, and it holds the potential to complement other areas of ones life. It may improve your overall performance and quality of life. Courtenay Smith, teacher and owner of The Yoga Shack says, “I came to it for the physical reasons and then I was like this is baller and I will do it for the rest of my life for the mental reasons! I want to be able to do Yoga until I am 80 years old.” She can and will too, just like many Yoga practitioners who have found themselves unapologetically submerged to its boundless calling. Remember, each class is different and so is every day. One day you may love to move and another you might wish to lie on the floor. Trying a variety of classes and finding what best suits you and your life style might be the gate to a whole new realm of possibilities. SeptemberIOctober 2015 35

oga is a practice and philosophy of mind, body and spirit, their unity, and the means to achieve an awareness of this unity. The origins of Yoga are ancient, yet its practice today has provided many benefits, some of which are surprising. Most Yoga classes focus on the unification of body, mind and breath.

The benefits of Yoga practice are numerous, starting with fitness and the affects it has on our muscles, bones and joints. The three components of musculoskeletal health are flexibility, strength and aerobic endurance. What makes Yoga unusual is that the movements eventually work every joint in the human body throughout their possible ranges of motion. Due to this awareness, Yoga is now used in rehab centers across the nation for rehabilitation of injuries. Let's talk about everybody's favorite, libido. Yoga practice includes techniques called bandhas, which stimulate specific endocrine glands. The reproductive glands are no exception,

and this practice will increase your

sex drive.

Then there comes the aspect of resistance and immunity. Our lymphatic system is both our sewer system, receiving the excess fluid and wastes made by our cells, and our defense

against disease. Keeping the tubes of the lymph system flowing is crucial to overall fitness. Yoga contracts all the muscles of the body while taking care to make inhalations deep and slow. Both these are the mechanism by which this fluid pumps through the system. Along with Cardiovascular Health, Yoga also enhances pulmonary (lung) capacity. In normal, unconscious breath, the body moves the rib cage only enough to bring the minimal amount of air it needs at any moment. Yoga forces the ribs to expand beyond the minimum, increasing the flexibility and expansion of the ribs, bringing in more air flow. Due to the relaxation Yoga provides, it can slow down the heart rate by introducing excess oxygen into the body’s internal systems.

Many postures stretch, roll, twist or compress our digestive organs, maintaining their fluidity while in constant contact. This aids in digestion, absorption and excretion. In reading Pathology texts, we find that the phenomenon of stress is the instigator of so many diseases and imbalances. Hatha Yoga stresses the component of Dharana (concentration, mindfulness) in its practice. The attentive mind considering breath and movement adds a magical component, primal energy (Prana). The addition of Prana is what allows the deep, stress-reducing relaxation experienced in Yoga practice. While Hatha Yoga focuses on the body/mind/breath, the remaining components of Yoga practice move towards the knowledge of the Inner Self. As the Yogi's say “the world screams for our attention while our soul whispers.” We need to shut out the noise in order to connect with the silence. Michael Rosen-Pyros, D.C. has practiced Yoga since 1968. He has taught anatomy and philosophy at Yoga Teacher Training programs throughout Tampa Bay, has classes at his home Studio in Sarasota, and practices a combination of Chiropractic and Thai Massage. He is the author of Life in a Spacesuit - Anatomy for Mystics. (Available at Amazon. com) To learn more visit BareFootChiropractor.com or RosenPyros@Mac.com.

Athletic Performance System

Strap, Clip & Go! n this increasingly hectic world the demand for a complete self sufficient wellness system has never been higher . When originally creating the Athletic Performance System, developers formulated a 750 page manual and converted it into HTML5 software compatible with all devices. Over 10,000 hours were spent producing this perfect all in one fitness system. APS has developed 6 specific key components to helping you achieve your optimum goals; exercises, stretching, mobilization, nutrition, hydration, and workouts. Every aspect of fitness is covered and all the training equipment you need is included. It allows individuals to personalize their own fitness routine and nutrition according to their ability and goal on their own time.

I

Built for males, females and the whole family, it is the only fitness product that comes with "software” that is desktop, laptop, and tablet friendly (compatible 44 FIT941.com

with all devices). APS has over 300 instructional videos, never before seen exercises and is the most portable fitness system in the world; set it up inside your home or anywhere outside in less than 1 minute. The support is extensive, giving you not only the visual instructions on technique and form, but picture and written instructions as well. Whether you need assistance or resistance the equipment provides what you need. Once you are a member, the support staff builds workouts and nutrition protocols that are personalized to your specific needs. Nutritional guidance can be a controversial thing, with APS, you choose what you want to eat based on the provided food items list that gives you a full nutritional break down. Whether you’re vegan, or prefer animal based proteins, APS respects that and lets you take control of your diet. This program is giving you the ability to structure out your diet and gives you

an understanding of the actual nutrient content you’re putting in your body. Superfood bar recipes are included that you can make at home, perfect for healthy snacking. Hydration unfortunately can be “under rated” at times. Many athletes struggle from muscle cramps, shortness of breath and dizziness during intense workouts because they are not getting an adequate amount of water and electrolytes into the body and muscular system. APS, not only gives you a breakdown of how much water is meant for your body specifically, but it also provides knowledge on the raw fruits and vegetables in your diet that will help you hydrate even more. It’s common for individuals to want to reach a specific goal of flexibility that they’re still incapable of reaching. Regardless of consistency, sometimes there are locations of the soft tissue and

fascia tissue that need to be released in order to get the mobility you’re looking for. With APS they give you specialized techniques that help you release those blocked areas all on your own! You will see improvement in flexibility and progress to your goals at an accelerated rate.

PhD Reviewed and Approved Product Dr. Mike Hearron, a Doctor of Physical Therapy; has received his BS in Kinesiology from Washington State University and completed his doctoral work from the University of St. Augustine in Florida. “As someone who loves working out, I’m always on the search for the hottest trends in strength training or finding the best ways to push myself, I was very fortunate to know about this product. I spent time trying out a few of the recipes with little problem, and for someone who does not bake or cook well, I was happy with how they turned out. There are literally a million combinations of exercise routines you can put together. Recommending the use of it to friends, family, and patients at my clinic...I can easily see myself using some of this for patients ranging from balance and trunk instabilities to some of my high school athletes who are trying to return to sport.”

How does it work? You can purchase a monthly or lifetime membership that gives you access to the software, support, and comes with the equipment. There are even options to purchase the entire system including a touch screen lap top! The choice is yours. All of the packages included a money back and satisfaction guarantee. produce verses a smoothie. Based on your perception this is actually a good thing, the more produce you get into a glass of juice the higher amount of daily servings of vegetables you’re getting for that day! Doing both smoothies and juicing are extremely beneficial for your body. Having many different forms of healthy liquid foods in your diet is what heals and strengthens your digestive system, therefore strengthening your immune system. 70% of your immune system is stemmed from your colon- having a blocked or toxic colon is what leads to a weakened immune system leading to a higher risk of bacterial, fungal/yeast and viral infections. These are common underlying causes to most diseases.

The Battle Between Juicing and Smoothies by Jaqlyn Tinaro

or those that are deciding on whether to indulge in a smoothie or have an energizing fresh pressed juice, the struggle is real. While both are extremely beneficial to our overall wellbeing it is important to know the difference between the two and more importantly when each is necessary. Keep it Simple. Here is a crash course on the differences between smoothies and juices that can be utilized to fuel healthy lifestyles and help to conquer individual goals.

F

PULP (insoluble fiber)– Although these fibers are absolutely essential for a healthy working digestive system, with juicing; these fibers are filtered out, creating more space for a higher nutrient density as well as higher nutrient absorption. Since smoothies 46 FIT941.com

are packed with fibers, it slows down the digestion process, making it more of a meal replacement as opposed to a quick energy boost. Fit2Run Fitness bar serves made-to-order smoothies and foods based on the fact that they saw a need for people to have more viable energy and nutrition in their lives. “There’s really a need for fresh natural food and drinks in the UTC area, “says Bill Robinson from Fit2Run. Even with shopping and walking around people’s endurance starts to run low. Smoothies are an excellent avenue for sustainable energy throughout the day. When it comes to juicing, making 1 glass of pressed greens juice it’s going to take at least triple the amount of

Karen Odierna, Founder and Chief Mixologist of CROPjuice, received her RN, BSN from the University of Florida. Upon seeing the amazing effects 100% organic leafy green juice had on her friends and family, Odierna decided to create a line of leafy green juices. “Whether it is a smoothie or juice, I support any avenue for one to increase his/her fruit and veggie intake. I personally used to blend smoothies every morning until I discovered cold pressed juices. The work involved in blending is much less than juicing, but the immense benefits I experienced consuming nutrient dense (more leafy greens) pulp free juice made the extra work and cost worthwhile. My cravings for sugar decreased dramatically, my energy levels increased and I never felt sleepy like I sometimes did after consuming a smoothie. For people that are active, having a greens juice 30-45 minutes before a workout is excellent for blood flow, accelerated tissue and muscle repair and gives the body an abundance of energy. Once done with a workout, doing a beet/greens and fruit juice blend will help with overall recovery due to the minerals from the beets and the glycogen from the fructose. 30-45 minutes after the beet juice is the optimal time to have a protein smoothie.

Different Types of Juicers & Blenders Centrifugal Juicer – These types of juicers have a spinning blade that breaks apart the cell wall and enzymes of the fruits and vegetables, forcing

the juice out. As the blade continues to spin, oxygen and heat emits due to friction and speed, causing the integrity of the nutrients to become diminished. Since the enzymes have already been broken apart the juice has a fast oxidation rate, leading to the vitamins to die off quicker. In order to insure there is as much nutrient density as possible, individuals must drink the juice within 15 minutes of production. Masticating Juicer – Also known as a “cold press machine”. These juicers crush the cell wall, pushing and pressurizing the produce without damaging the integrity of the enzymes within the juice. Due to this process the juice has a longer shelf life (if there is limited exposure to oxygen) and a much higher nutrient density.

Blenders – Usually due to lower speed settings, not many blenders can properly liquefy all the nutrients, therefore leaving larger food particles. The larger the food particles the longer it takes to break down and absorb into the system as energy. Smaller “cup size” blenders are excellent for on the go smoothies, getting as much nutrients packed in at once. For higher “horse power” blenders, there are much smaller food particles. Therefore, known for aiding in better absorption and having a much smoother texture. Contrary to popular belief, juices and smoothies that are mass produced and bought in a grocery store are not the same thing as fresh pressed/cold pressed juice or fresh smoothies. They are always pasteurized and most of the time, from concentrate. Both processes involve heat, therefore killing all enzymes & naturally occurring vitamins within the juice.” Juice from concentrate”, means that the juice was boiled down to syrup and reconstituted with water, which has little to no nutritional value. The healthy natural fructose sugars that were once beneficial are now just as harmful as any other processed sugar. By continuing to stay mindful of the differences and effects of Smoothies vs. Juicing a healthy lifestyle can and will be achieved. the game of

physical chess by Sara Blackwell

here is a reason many of the participants in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (“BJJ”) are doctors, lawyers, and successful business owners. BJJ is a fitness game of chess played in a fight with the winner being the most intellectual player.

T

BJJ, also known as Gracie Jiu-Jitsu (named after one of the pioneers: Helio Gracie), was born in 1882 as an adaptation of Judo, with an enhanced focus on moves that empower weaker and smaller people against bigger and stronger opponents. Athletically challenging, an aerobic and anaerobic activating exercise; BJJ is a great strengthening workout for the entire body. It is a learned skill of combat and self-defense, resulting in far more than just a simple form of physical fitness. Thadeu Vieira, Owner of Vieira BJJ (located in the Westfield Sarasota Square Mall near Sears) states, “Brazilian jiu-jitsu is a fantastic work-out, intellectual challenge

and a wonderful source of self-defense for everyone. I encourage men, women and children to try it at least once or twice for the physical fitness, fun and self-defense. You will be addicted!” Boxing against a bag and kickboxing against a matted post are enjoyable fighting-types of work outs. However, most participants in boxing and kickboxing classes do not actually want someone to punch or kick them in a sparring match. Punching a bag is very different than actual person to person contact. The main difference in BJJ is no one is punching or kicking you; therefore, it is less intimidating than sparring. It is a person to person fight that can be accomplished by anyone, at any age, at any fitness level. Moreover, hitting and kicking a bag will not always help defend a person if they are personally attacked.

The main focus of BJJ fighting is on the ground. The fight begins with the two participants standing, with multiple options to take the opponent to the ground. Both individuals are trying the techniques they know best to get the other person on his back. The person with the most skill and knowledge will be the one to get the other one on the floor, size is a small component of who lands on the ground first. Once on the ground, the real fight begins. Each fighter is attempting to successfully execute various offensive and defensive moves without the use of punching or kicking. Three taps are available to all participants at any time, insuring there is little opportunity for actual pain or injury. A fight could include a knee to the other person’s abdomen, flipping from bottom to top with skill and technique (regardless of the size or strength of the person on top) and chokes with the arms, legs and with the Gi (the outfit worn in BJJ). What makes BJJ a game of physical chess is that the more moves a person knows and can execute, the better he will be in a fight. But it is more than that. A person can know all of the techniques, but the moment there is an actual fight; the mind and body become overwhelmed causing them to be forgotten. BJJ trains the fighter to build muscle memory helping the body to act naturally during a fight. An even more skilled fighter will know what move

will be executed next by the movement of his opponent; therefore anticipating future moves and strategizing the best way to win.

WE BELIEVE IN BIKES!

“Jiu Jitsu is similar to Chess in that students first have to learn about the basic positions, attacks, escapes and counters before they can "play" Jiu Jitsu. Once the student has a handle on how to play, that's when they can start working on strategy.” Sonny Parlin, Owner and Head instructor of Gracie Bradenton. FIND OUT WHATS GOING ON EVERYTHING Ronda Rousey, an undefeated American mixed martial artist, and the first and current UFC Women's Bantamweight Champion, turned an “arm bar” into a commonly known move. The arm bar is a Judo and a BJJ technique for submission. Ronda Rousey mastered the arm bar from every possible angle. BJJ teaches how to submit, and escape from, the arm bar by using multiple techniques. An arm bar is completed in different ways but generally the attacker takes the opponent’s arm squeezing their wrist against the attacker’s chest. The attacker positions herself so that the opponent’s arm (under the elbow) is between her legs. The legs are usually over the opponent with his body under the legs. Then the attacker squeezes her legs and raises her hips, holding the arm tight against her chest. This pushes the elbow the wrong way. The opponent has two choices: tap out or have a dislocated elbow.

CHILDHOOD OBESITY CONTINUES TO RISE The average life expectancy of today's adults, roughly 77 years, is at least four to nine months shorter than it would be if there was no obesity. That means that obesity is already shortening average life spans by a greater rate than accidents, homicides and suicides combined.

52 FIT941.com

id you know that for the first time ever, children between the ages of 6 to 13 years old are expected to have a shorter life expectancy than their parents? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, US childhood obesity rates have more than tripled in the past thirty years. The average life expectancy of today's adults, roughly 77 years, is at least four to nine months shorter than it would be if there was no obesity. That means that obesity is already shortening average life spans by a greater rate than accidents, homicides and suicides combined. Unfortunately these statistics are implying that the likelihood of children dying before their parents is on the rise.

D

With school approaching, parents need to be aware of the growing epidemic in this country, childhood obesity. As an example, here is a portrayal of a boy we will call Johnny. Johnny is born a healthy child, and is quickly introduced

to hours of video games, television and all other electronic devices. Johnny discovers chips, junk food, artificially flavored beverages and quickly becomes addicted. Consuming these foods regularly, he goes to school and sits studying for hours and hours a day. His schedule gets so busy; he now begins to eat fast food on the go. At this point he is considered mildly obese and due to the circumstances, Johnny is too tired to exercise. As a result he gains an extra 10 pounds and is now at the point of moderately obese. Johnny now doesn’t engage in any exercise, therefore gains an additional 20-30 pounds. At this point he is now severely obese and clinically depressed. Over this period of time his energy levels, mood and behavior have changed drastically since the introduction of processed/artificial foods, resulting in diagnosis of ADD, ADHD, and several personality disorders. Fast forward‌ as an adult, Johnny now is considered clinically obese, on multiple prescription medications with a series of side effects and is faced with a musculoskeletal disease which prevents him from any exercise. He is at risk for Coronary Artery Disease, Pulmonary Disease, kidney failure, liver damage, severe nutrient deficiencies, Diabetes and several types of Cancers which all result in high medical bills and mortality. What went wrong with Johnny?

Obesity in children and adolescents is on the rise. The CDC states, the percentage of children aged 6–11 years in the United States who were obese increased from 7% in 1980 to nearly 18% in 2012. Similarly, the percentage of adolescents aged 12–19 years who were obese increased from 5% to nearly 21% over the same period. Overweight and obesity are the result of “caloric imbalance”—too few calories expended for the amount of calories consumed—and are affected by various genetic, behavioral, and environmental factors. Along with caloric imbalance is the consumption of “empty calories”. Processed foods that are high in sugars and low in nutrients are being consumed at an accelerated rate due to the fact that the body craves what it does not have or is not absorbed. Since these foods contain no true nutritional value, the body is never truly satisfied therefore over eating has become a huge issue in America. Healthy eating habits have been promoted in schools and the media and recently a program has been adopted nationwide called “The 5-2-1-0 Program”. The program is simple!

eat like your life depends on it

FRUITS AND VEGETABLES PER DAY. HOURS OR LESS OF VIDEO GAMES/ELECTRONICS/ TV PER DAY. HOUR AT LEAST OF ACTIVE PLAY A DAY. SWEETENED BEVERAGES OR PROCESSED JUICES.

Prior to your child entering school it is important to schedule an annual physical with a pediatrician or family doctor. This appointment must include an evaluation of the child’s growth chart. The chart is easy to follow: Normal Healthy weight will fall between the 5th - 85th percentile based on height and weight Overweight will fall between the 85th percentile - less than 95th percentile

If your child is in the overweight or obese category you must think of the story of Johnny. Implement “The 5210 Program” or seek help from a physician specializing in obesity management. The time to prevent long term obesity related disease begins in childhood. Fitness

here is no doubt that there is a price to pay for fitness. Repetitive stress, minor injuries, improper form and biomechanical imbalances can become amplified when ignored and lead to bigger issues. These set-backs can interrupt workout schedules and hinder gains. Since the late 19th century, scores of people have found solace in Chiropractic care. Chiropractic is more than a fix for back pain, focusing on disorders of the entire musculoskeletal and nervous systems. The spine is generally the focus of most Chiropractor’s hands, reducing pain and restoring or enhancing joint function, but many techniques go beyond the spine and treat imbalances in motor patterns; rehabilitating soft tissue injuries and restoring function to joints in the extremities. Athletic-minded individuals, whether new to Chiropractic or not, may be unfamiliar with techniques that are geared towards a more active lifestyle. This glossar provides definitions of terms and explanations of just some of the many techniques utilized locally to treat active adults.

Active Release Technique (A.R.T.) A.R.T. involves the dissolution of scar tissue. When trauma or every day strains

occur, the body responds by depositing a dense tissue referred to as scar tissue. Scar tissue shortens and weakens soft tissue therefore resulting in pain, decreased range of motion or excessive strain. By breaking up the scar tissue located in the muscles, ligaments, and tendons; healthy tissue can regenerate. Every A.R.T. session is actually a combination of examination and treatment. The A.R.T. provider uses their hands to evaluate the texture, tightness and movement of muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments, and nerves. Abnormal tissues are treated by combining precisely directed tension with very specific patient movements.

Integrative Diagnosis Integrative Diagnosis providers focus on the treatment of adhesion. Adhesion is the most

common, underdiagnosed, and luckily the most reversible pathology in the musculoskeletal system. When adhesion is present it can result in deacreased mobility, decreased strength and pain. Integrative Diagnosis providers are trained to remove adhesion; thus resulting in healthy muscles that stretch and contract properly allowing for pain free joint motion.

Laser Therapy Laser therapy treatment helps reduce pain and inflammation and enhances tissue healing—both in hard and soft tissues, including muscles, ligaments, and even bones. It increases oxygenation of tissues and allows injured or damaged cells to absorb photons of light, which speeds healing. Class 4 laser therapy can be effectively combined with a number of other Chiropractic modalities.

The Reality of Soft Tissue Injury and Repair Without proper rehab, smaller traumas create limitations in mobility and stability that sets us up for a larger injury. It’s the continued cycle of repetitive injury and incomplete repair that create the chronic health issues that eventually sideline us. It’s not as simple as reducing swelling and eliminating pain, because that is only the beginning of the repair process.

et’s face it; those of us who choose an active lifestyle are going to face multiple injuries in our lifetime. While many injuries may be minor, there can be a cumulative effect over time. Without proper rehab, smaller traumas create limitations in mobility and stability that sets us up for a larger injury. It’s the continued cycle of repetitive injury and incomplete repair that create the chronic health issues that eventually sideline us. It’s not as simple as reducing swelling and eliminating pain, because that is only the beginning of the repair process.

L

Soft tissues consist of muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, cartilage, blood vessels and nerves. These all work in harmony to allow our bodies to properly function and move. Muscles, tendons and ligaments are the soft tissues that are mainly involved in movement. Muscles are attached to bone by tendon and work in harmony to move the bones. Bones are connected by ligaments that form joints and allow articular surfaces to glide more smoothly. When we suffer an injury, sports or trauma related, we are setting in motion a three phase process of repair. The first phase of soft tissue repair following injury is known as the Inflammatory Phase, which lasts for up to 72 hours. During this phase, blood cells rush in to provide nutrients and clean up the damage. Swelling and pain are characteristic during this period. You can assist the healing process by applying ice (not heat) and elevation of the injured area. Ice should be limited to no more than 30 minutes at a time and not placed directly on the skin. A Proteolytic Enzyme Formula (taken be-

56 FIT941.com

tween meals and always on an empty stomach) can also be used to help support the initial phase of repair. The second phase is called the Repair Phase, which may last for several months. Immune cells migrate to the area of injury to release growth factors and proteins that help direct the repair process. Collagen is synthesized to bridge the gaps and create a matrix for the repair process to begin. During this phase it is important to use caution with Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs: Advil, Motrin, Aleve, Motrin, Ibuprophen, etc.) and Corticosteroids that have been shown to damage articular cartilage and weaken collagen repair. A better approach would be to eat a healthy diet, increase supplementation and hydration to supply the proper nutrients required for repair. Early mobilizaWhen we suffer an injury, sports or trauma related, we are setting in motion a three phase process of repair. tion using chiropractic manipulation, muscle work and targeted progressive rehab have been shown to break up scar tissue and properly direct the orientation of collagen fibers. Full mobilization of the joint is the goal of therapy during this phase of repair. The third phase of repair is called the Remodeling Phase and can last from 12 months post injury to years. During this phase the collagen fibers mature and strengthen to be able to withstand the stresses placed on the soft tissue. Specific stabilization exercises are vital during this phase to ensure the soft tissue fibers support the joint and properly anchor the muscle. If the area is not stabilized and the proper alignment of joint surfaces is not achieved, then the repaired tissue will become prone to future injury. It’s a common misconception that injured soft tissue will be as strong as it was prior to injury. In reality, scar tissue is not as strong and will always remain weaker than the undamaged tissue. Still there is much an athlete can do to obtain a

more favorable outcome in soft tissue repair with the help of a properly trained healthcare practitioner and some home therapy. There are a number of techniques like Chiropractic Manipulation, Graston (Guasha), Active Release Technique (ART), Voodoo Flossing (Compression Shearing), Progressive Rehab, Rock Tape, and Myofacial Release that a practitioner may use to optimize the soft tissue repair process. Athletes can also utilize foam rolling, muscle work using therapy balls, mobilization using monster bands and stabilization exercises to support soft tissue repair outside of the office. In the end, the goal is to keep us all doing what we love by restoring proper function and mobility to our soft tissues. He uses a functional movement exam to identify musculoskeletal problems, which he treats using a combination of chiropractic, progressive rehab, and muscle work to restore proper movement.

chool is back in session, the temperatures are still high, and the kids need activities to keep them moving. Summer has past, but there is still no time like the present for your children to learn to swim. This skill is a critical one, especially for anyone living here on the Gulf Coast of Florida. This is why Sarasota Swim Academy has their water conditioning and water adaptation programs. This will help acclimate your baby to water and get him or her comfortable as early as possible, creating a positive association with water for life.

One thing they are adamant about is that they do not consider swimming under the water and doggy paddling to be real ‘swimming.’ They use a high standard meant to keep people of all ages safe and to save lives. The focus is on proper air exchange and breath control, as studies have found that humans can only swim about 200 yards without breathing effectively. Sarasota Swim Academy only considers someone a true swimmer when they can swim 300 yards non-stop, and swim 6 different styles of swimming.
