USING EXERCISE TO RE-ALIGN POSTURE, SO YOU MOVE BETTER!
What is Re-alignment Therapy? It’s called the Egoscue Method and it’s a holistic approach to changing posture through whole body exercise. It’s no secret that muscles move bones. If your body has lost its designed posture, it’s because muscles have moved your bones into a new, dysfunctional position. Pain is the body’s way of alerting you to the fact that your body isn’t aligned, and therefore isn’t moving, properly. We use a series of gentle exercises and stretches to return musculoskeletal balance and symmetry back to your body. Correct Functional Alignment
Dysfunctional Alignment
KEY POINTS ABOUT PAIN AND POSTURE: THE SITE OF THE PAIN IS NOT THE SOURCE OF THE PAIN. THE ACTIVITIES WE DO ARE NOT THE CAUSE OF OUR PAIN. THE BODY IS A UNIT AND MUST BE TREATED AS ONE. MISALIGNED POSTURE AND HABITUAL MOVEMENT PATTERNS CAUSE PAIN. POSTURE AND PAIN CAN BE IMPROVED QUICKLY.
“Many things we may take for granted, like sitting with your leg crossed or sitting Indian style on the floor... I can now do with ease that I couldn’t do for a long time. I feel amazing and I move better! I can squat without pain in my back and can enjoy doing movements like clean and jerk again! I’m so thankful for Lauren and this therapy!” -J. S

publisher's note Welcome to 2016! May it be everything you hope for, but most of all, everything you need. Each January, roughly one in three Americans resolve to better themselves in some way. Losing weight and getting or staying fit, rank as the top two New Year’s resolutions.

Keeping just a few things in mind can help make your goals for the year a reality. The key to success is to not go in gung ho; easing in to a new routine will help ensure longevity and progress. And progress is what it is all about. Usually the reason the best laid New Year’s resolution fails is when one tries to do 2015 Superbowl Y-Tri too much too soon. Shift your mindset from the ‘all or nothing,’ zero to 60 mentality. Be realistic about your current fitness situation and start at a reasonable pace. If you are not able to stick with the unrealistic expectations you set for yourself, you may end up doing nothing at all. If you are like most of us, you’ve done the ‘I’m so sore I can’t walk for days’ routine enough times to know better. Ease into your new routine and build the intensity as you go; after a month of sticking to a routine, working out will be the new normal. If you’re finding it hard to get motivated, work out with a friend. This allows for a little friendly competition and increased accountability. Choose goals together and get to work. It’s always a little easier when you know someone is up and waiting for you at the gym. If fitness-oriented friends are not in abundance, or your schedule does not accommodate this, group classes or personal training may be the way to go. If sticking to a routine and staying fit isn’t the issue for you, you may still need to keep things fresh to bring you to a higher level of fitness. Mixing it up helps motivate and reinvigorate a stale routine. Challenges and goal events can keep you going harder than you normally would. Last January, my goal for 2015 is illustrated by the photo of me above. The Super Bowl Y Tri was the perfect event to push me, to add some additional endurance back into my routine. Whether you choose a triathlon, a half marathon or the CrossFit Open, go for something that will challenge you to do more. The ‘Fit941 Elite Fitness Challenge’ we talk about in this issue (please see page 51) is geared just for that. It’s a great way to push yourself and challenge your fitness on different levels. Expect to see another article in our next issue or visit Fit941EFC.com for more information. If a fun group challenge is what gets you moving, there is nothing like a good Dragon boat race (please see page 20) to inspire the whole office or gym. No experience is necessary and you are sure get a good workout while having a blast. We hope this issue inspires you and helps you reach your 2016 fitness goals and make sure to check back with us each issue for motivation, encouragement and everything fit in 941.

Re-aligning in New Year
R
inging in the New Year with chronic aches and pains? Re-align exercise therapy focuses on the whole body, says Lauren Chadwick-Sonnen, who has 15 years of experience in corporate and commercial fitness, collegiate strength conditioning and personal training. In her re-alignment studio located at GrindFit in Sarasota, she says, “We treat the underlying cause of your chronic pain and injuries.” “Many types of chronic pain and injuries are caused by the slow deterioration of your posture and the only way to get complete, longlasting pain relief is by correcting your postural mis-alignments through exercise therapy,” she says. “Surgery, manipulation, injections, braces, exercises, and stretches designed to target your symptoms are only going to offer, at best, short term relief because they are doing nothing about correcting the cause of your pain – which is your postural alignment. When we locate any mis-alignments or compensations, we will educate you on the findings and prescribe you a menu of exercises to correct any of the found deviations. Each change the muscles make, receptors send new signals and the central nervous system re-calibrates.” For those who’ve tried everything, Lauren suggests re-align exercise therapy. By appointment only, contact Lauren at 941-504-1630, via email at l.sonnen78@gmail.com or visit her website at RealignExerciseTherapy.com.

Athlete Profile Believe the Oxygen Hype
J
ana Marie is a practitioner so she’s obviously sold, but so too are Madonna and throngs of celebs that swear by a good oxygen facial.
Merrill Mundy Taking the World by Storm, One Barrel at a Time
M
errill Mundy was just a toddler when she first saddled up. The 13-year-old from Parrish recently won the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association 2015 Junior World Championship in barrel racing. Merrill, who rode her 8-year-old mare ‘Smoke More Money,’ not only won the championship, but in 2015, attended and competed in 25 rodeo events winning nearly $20,000. “You definitely have to be athletic. Not just anyone can do it. You put someone on a horse and they wobble all around. You have to have the balance, the strength and especially the determination to do it,” Merrill says. “It takes a while to get used to it and then overcoming the fear of going fast.”
Oxygen facials claim to smooth and plump the skin without leaving red splotches. Pure oxygen combined with a serum is delivered to the skin via a high-pressure airbrush. A non-medical procedure, first the skin is exfoliated to make sure it’s dirt and oil-free. Next comes a gentle steam and then the serum infused oxygen is introduced directly to the skin. Painless, your skin rebounds and heals quickly. And the fact that there are no side-effects like redness or itching, means one can apply makeup right after. The skin looks and feels rejuvenated since an oxygen infusion may assist the skin in new cell creation. “They are absolutely changing my client’s skin in the way it looks and feels,” says Jana Marie Lyons of Jana Marie Esthetics, who’s been providing facial skin-care services in the Sarasota area for nine years. “Beginning when I learned oxygen facials were Hollywood’s secrets of the stars, I was completely intrigued and then did my homework and research for years.” Lyons uses a ‘pharmaceutical grade skincare line’ of serums that are certified organic extracts and contain vitamins, minerals, peptides and amino acids. The line is paraben-free, Vegan and employs no animal testing. “It’s important,” she says. “Being aware of what you are pushing into your skin is crucial.” For more information visit FloridaEsthetician.org.
Bands on the Run
T
When Merrill was just 3 or 4 she was “really good at gymnastics” and was a “really fast runner.” Her coaches encouraged her to consider competing in both but she had to make a choice: “Dad said I couldn’t run to three or four places every day. Even though my (track) coach said I was the fastest kid in the school and wanted me to compete and begged and begged, I had to make a choice and really I didn’t have the love for (running) that I needed to have.” That love was in the barn. Merrill wants to be a professional rider or professional horse trainer: “I want to make a career out of it. It’s what I love.” Giddy-up, Merrill! 12 JANUARY | FEBRUARY 2016

Janet Oberholtzer
I
n the spring of 2004 on a California roadway Janet Oberholtzer’s life was shattered, literally and figuratively. A six-vehicle accident involving a number of tractor trailers left her body crushed; she was traveling in a motor home and the corner where she was sitting took the brunt of the impact. Her injuries included a fractured pelvis and multiple fractures and tissue damage in her leg and ankle. She remained in the hospital for nearly three months. Around 12 weeks after she was released, Janet took her first step with the assistance of a walker, a month or two later with crutches and a cane. Seven months after leaving the hospital, she took her first unassisted steps. She also had a surgery-a-year for four years following the accident to help increase her range of motion in her feet and ankle and to help decrease the great pain she suffered. Theodore Roosevelt’s famous quote, “Do what you can, with what you have, where you are,” became her mantra. Janet began doing regular walks, 10 minutes at a time daily, until her body began to grow stronger and stronger. Four years after the accident, she took her first running steps. Eight years to the day after the crash, in May of 2012, Janet competed in her first post-accident marathon in Pennsylvania. She used the Jim Galloway method, ‘Run, Walk, Run’ to avoid a re-injury. Now, Janet is in training for the Sarasota Half Marathon in March. “I find if you continually stay active it helps,” she says. “You know that saying, if you don’t use it you lose it? Well with an injured body that’s even truer.” We at Fit941 are inspired by Janet’s story and will be cheering her on at the Sarasota Half Marathon!
At Powerhouse Dance, which has just added a number of new and exciting classes to their existing variety of course offerings, owner Kourtney Kalahar says, “We believe that dedication and discipline in a healthy, positive and loving environment motivates students to realize their potential as dancers, athletes and people.” Powerhouse Dance offers classes for children and adults. They also offers conditioning and stretching classes as well as traditional dance including ballet and lyrical and even ‘Mommy and Me’ classes. Three Suns Ranch describes itself as the premiere grass-fed, hormone-free, no antibiotics, all natural ranch in Florida. “We are one of only a few ranches in the country that raise our animals, harvest them, and cut and wrap them under U.S.D.A. inspection,” owners say. Its bison have lots of space to roam and plenty of grass: “Twice a year we round them up and run them through the system for checkups and sorting. for the remainder for their time on the ranch we keep our interactions to a minimum. We try to let the bison be bison,” Three Suns Ranch owners say. Its cows are locally raised, grass fed. With several different breeds including the original Florida Cracker, and Angus, Brahma and Herford: “We raise and care for our cattle from the day they are born to the day they are harvested, and can therefore vouch for the cleanliness of our beef. We are one of only two ranches in the country that can make this claim.” Its pigs are actually Florida wild boar purchased from local trappers. f the testimonials are any indication, Sarasota’s newest hot yoga studio is well, blazing hot. Designed for novices and advanced yoga practitioners and aficionados, the new Clark Road yoga studio, Hot Yoga 4 You, is counting the five-star reviews: “The classes offered here are perfect for both beginner and experienced,” writes Margie. She explains that the 60-minute ‘Hot Series,’ “takes the best 26 healing postures for your body and mixes in a few key standing postures leaving you feeling amazing.” She also praises instructors as “outstanding.” Margie is joined by numerous others who have very recently reviewed the studio which opened in November. Owner Yolanda Nash says so far, business at the new yoga studio is “really great.” And to not only expand its reach but to offer locals a break on costs, Yolanda has announced a special for local residents and new clients: $25 for 15 consecutive days of yoga. Hot Yoga 4 You is also offering one-week of yoga specials for folks just visiting the 941. Call for more details at 941-626-6396 or visit the website at HotYoga4You.com.

Boot camps should begin with a pretty basic fitness assessment done by the trainer.
BOOT CAMPs
KEEPING YOU FIT! Idyllic weather is just one of the reasons the 941 is a boot camp paradise, since the great outdoors is an ideal boot camp venue. But there are myriad other reasons including the fact that there are so many offerings – from boot camps for babies to brides. So lace up, grab a water bottle and a towel (or two) and explore boot camps in the 941.

A-Ten-Hut!
A typical fitness boot camp is less intimidating and friendlier than say,
the USMC Parris Island depot where no mercy is the mantra, but it is an exercise class where one is pushed far harder than they’d ever push themselves, but with limitations – the trainer isn’t a drill sergeant albeit close, though s/he’s more likely than not to be pushing one beyond while offering loads of encouragement – a passiveaggressive approach that keeps the ‘camper’ motivated and moving. And boot camps are about team; modeled after military-style boot camps where exercise-group unity and support for

each team member is the foundation the camp is built upon. The typical boot camp is an outdoor group class that combines traditional calisthenics and weight exercises with strength and interval training. Generally a set period, say four, six or eight weeks at a time, a classic boot camp session might include sit-ups, push-ups, sprints, lunges and more with virtually no rest in between. The workouts are at once demanding, potent and supremely productive – with fast results not uncommon - and often, very reasonably priced. Boot camps should begin with a pretty basic fitness assessment done by the trainer. The groundwork for the regimen is usually addressed and the work begins. Classes typically run 30 to 60 minutes and the exercises that are incorporated run the gamut but often include a warmup, sit-ups, push-ups, squats, lunges, plyometrics (jump training), burpees,

to increasing your metabolism,” JD says. “Most boot camp programs rely heavily on body weight exercises; they are safer and more appropriate for the general population than some of the other popular fitness programs around these days.” Some say boot camps aren’t for everyone. But with variations and boutique-style offerings, they just may be for everyone.
Women
One industry study shows a boot camper burns almost 600 calories during a workout and another found boot campers acheive far greater gains in muscle strength and endurance and far more weight loss over conventional weight training and treadmill running, JD explains.
Boot camps designed specifically for women are gaining in popularity. Nokomis Adventure Boot Camp for Women provides a safe, supportive environment where women, beginning at their comfort level, engage in weight training, cardio and endurance drills, obstacle courses, and par courses as well as exploring kickboxing, martial arts-based workouts, Pilates and yoga. This camp and similar boot camps for women often feature body fat analysis, measurements and nutrition seminar. And there’s a sense of welcoming for women at all fitness levels.

Seniors
Perhaps the conventional wisdom is that boot camps designed for seniors are slowed-down. Not true. Kids
According to the Centers for Disease Control, U.S. childhood obesity rates have more than quadrupled in the past three decades. In the short term, obese kids are at risk for high cholesterol and blood pressure, but they often become obese adults and the long term health effects include cardiovascular disease, diabetes, stroke and cancer. Boot camps designed specifically for kids are an ideal way to help kick start a commitment to a healthy, active lifestyle. A kids-specific boot camp often includes fun activities like obstacle courses in addition to traditional warm-ups, stretches, and group conditioning exercises that focus on strength, agility, balance, and coordination. Many senior and community centers feature group exercises, think ‘Silver Sneakers,’ but senior boot camps can incorporate the intensity of a vigorous workout with modifications like step jacks versus jumping jacks, full body extensions versus jump squats. You get the idea. Boot camps for seniors balance active and healthy lifestyle goals against each person’s capabilities based on health.

Even brides …
Camp Gladiator, the fastest growing, most dynamic fitness program in the nation, promises a four-week boot camp experience where people of all ages and fitness levels can push themselves to reach their goals.
Looking to shed before you wed? There’s a boot camp for that. Bridal boot camps are usually eight to 10 or 12 weeks and include exercises that focus on the core with attention to the arms for all those stunning sleeveless gowns. Nutritional counseling including diet plans are also often a feature. Some are not just for brides but also often for the bridal party.

Getting Ready For The Ski Season by Anna Panzarino he last time Sarasota saw snow, albeit fleeting flurries, but snow nonetheless was in December of 1989. In 1977, snow fell in Miami and actually stuck to the ground long enough for front page photos. Fortunately, for skiers and snow-sports lovers, the Ski Club of Sarasota doesn’t wait for the rare snowflake to arrive. Since the snow doesn’t come to them, they take their members to the snow.

For the past 25 years, the Ski Club of Sarasota has provided well-planned ski trips to snowy peaks across the U. S. and the globe, from Aspen to ZalAm-See, Austria. The excursions to “fabulous resorts” include: January trips to Snowmass, Colorado and Whistler/ Backcomb, British Columbia; a February sojourn to Mt. Bachelor in Oregon; and March trips to Zell-am-See, Austria and Steamboat, Colorado. Need the gear? Shopping online, while perhaps convenient, might not be the best choice for ski gear given the importance of a good fit. Shopping locally for the stuff you’ll need on the slopes is covered by Environeers in Sarasota. With brands including North Face, Patagonia, Arcteryx and Helly Hansen, they’ve got you covered. Trip is booked and the gear is packed. But you’re not quite ready. To get the most out of a skiing sojourn, some strength training is a must. And whether a novice or experienced skier, it’s wise to train focusing on core and leg exercises, not only to ski your best, but importantly, to avoid injury. Sarasota-based personal trainer Blaine Bott, who has trained many a skier, says “any fitness program you can do before your ski trip is beneficial.” But he adds that incorporating a multi28 JANUARY | FEBRUARY 2016
planar program “will deliver a complete workout that not only involves every major muscle group but includes movement at each joint through every plane of motion.” Bott says the balanced training a few weeks prior two to four times a week “will improve the rough movement patterns brought on by skiing.” Bott suggests incorporating four movements into one’s existing exercise program.
Mini Band Lateral Walks (2x10 each) Standing in a quarter squat position with feet shoulder width apart and mini band above the knees. Moving to the right, push with the left leg while stepping laterally with the right. Bring the left foot back to the starting position and continue for the prescribed number of repetitions. Repeat while moving to the left.
Chop from Half Kneeling with Cable Bar (2x8 each) Set up in a half kneeling position so that the hips, knees, and ankles form a 90 degree position on both the left and right sides; the stance width will vary from 0-8 inches apart. The head should be and remain in a neutral position throughout the exercise. Once the beginning position has been accomplished, grab the cable bar with both hands and place the top hand at the top of the cable bar. With the down hand, begin to pull the cable bar down keeping it close to the chest until the arm is straight. Then take the top hand and press it down until the arm is also straight.
Inverted T-Balance (2x6 each) Stand on your left leg with your arms raised out at your sides. Keeping your back flat, slowly bend forward at your waist while reaching your right heel back

and toward the sky. Pause when you feel a stretch in the back of the upper thigh of your down leg, then return to the starting position and repeat.
Step-Back Lunge with Rotation (2x6 each) Step backward into lunge with left foot and contract left glute. Twist over the front leg by taking left elbow to the outside of the right knee. Reverse the twist back to neutral and return to standing position by pulling through with left hip flexor, and immediately step into lunge with other leg. Bott says the second phase of getting ready for your ski trip is introducing a plyometrics routine for 3 to 6 weeks prior to leaving. Having huge benefits for reducing lower extremity injuries in skiing when combined with the multi-planar training, the goal is to train for maximum force production in the shortest period of time, reps are low and intensity and effort are high. Incorporate these four progressive movements to maximize your abilities:
Jump Rope - 1x20 each of 4-5 exercises Increase your foot quickness, improve your balance, and improve your handeye-foot coordination. Always use flat smooth surface. Ideal surfaces should absorb your jumping movements. Jump on the mid-foot, always keeping a slight bend in the knees never landing straightlegged, starting slow and mastering few types of jumps.
Box Blast (3x10 each) Standing with one foot flat on a box

and arms bent at the elbow to 90 degrees and cocked back. Jump vertically by throwing arms and exploding through the front leg, extending your hip, knee, and ankle. Land in the same starting position, without pausing, and immediately take off the same foot, repeating the jump for 10 repetitions. Repeat with the other leg.
Lateral Jump to Stabilization (3x6 each) Standing with hips perpendicular, on two legs in athletic stance, hop laterally over one hurdle and stabilize. Reverse direction and repeat. A more advanced version can be increased to a continuous movement.
FLEX APPEAL COACH ZACH
GET YOUR BACK WITH
Depth Drop Jump (3x3) Stand tall with your arms bent 90 degrees so your forearms point straight up. Maintaining this bend in your elbows, depth drop down from box, throw your elbows down and back as you sink into a squat position by bending your knees and lowering your hips. Using your arms to help generate force, immediately jump straight up, extending your hips, knees, and ankles. Land softly with your knees bent, hips back, and arms back behind you.
Benefits: Convenience and privacy of in-home and online training. Custom nutrition and meal-planning, macro-based and flexible dieting. Faster gains with customized supplement plan and free consultations.
Lastly, Bott says, incorporating an intensive stretching routine in order to both protect the joint and make it more receptive to the plyometric benefits is a must. Always start your sessions taking the first 10-15 minutes to perform Dynamic Mobility movements to increase body temperature, activate the nervous system, increase range of motion, and correct limitations. Professional Achievements “Helping people accomplish goals they never thought were possible,” the couple says. Claire and Stephen have also raised thousands of dollars for local families in need through their charity boot camps. Philosophy of Success “You have to focus on each other’s strengths and on what each of you bring to the table. You can't force the other one to conform to a certain style of training. You have to allow each other to be who they are in all aspects of the business.”
Aaron & Alexis Weedo About Aaron and Alexis Aaron grew up watching his father train athletes in his garage after work which would inspire him to one day open his own gym. While at the U. S. Naval Academy, he distinguished himself as a football player who set a record for kick return yards against Army. After graduation, he too began training clients in his garage, worked at a corporate job and played semi-pro football. Alexis, who began competitive gymnastics at age 8,

would go on to Florida Atlantic University on an academic scholarship, and worked in a sports performance facility helping to train young athletes. Upon graduation, she became a personal trainer but also began working with physical therapists which helped her to better understand rehabilitation and injury prevention, an interest Aaron shared. Professional Achievements Aaron and Alexis met as trainers and both had been closely following CrossFit workouts. "We went from exercising and training as hobby to training clients’ full time, and it happened organically.” In 2011, the couple opened CrossFit Lakewood Ranch; they started out in a small location but within two years moved to a new location, double the size. The couple credits community support for that growth: “Growing up playing sports, families worked together. We carpooled to practices and helped each other out. We wanted that feel in a gym. We wanted to create a community where people would come together as a family; a place where no one is judged. That’s what we see here and we like that. Our community is everything.” Philosophy of Success "The motto for CrossFit Lakewood Ranch is 'Leave your ego at the door and your sweat on the floor,’” Aaron says. “That’s an accurate philosophy for how we’ve succeeded as a couple. It’s hard enough being a couple, and hard enough working alongside someone else. We’ve learned to really work with each other’s strengths, especially in this professional environment."

Underlying Causes Of Weight Gain
by Jaqlyn Tinaro
ur bodies gain and hold onto weight for a number of reasons. In order to successfully lose weight, it is wise to address the underlying cause of why the body is gaining in the first place. The first step is in understanding that fat is stored in the body as a defense mechanism. Before society became what it is, our bodies didn’t know when the next meal was coming our way, so as a defense mechanism we stored our foods as fat just in case. Today, society, food accessibility and food quality has changed drastically. Along with the changes in environment, stress and toxin exposure, a number of diseases and disorders have developed over time. A lot of these disorders have a very common side effect—weight gain.
O
Let’s start with the basics, eating habits and diet. Digestion starts in the mouth, i.e. chewing and saliva production. A common issue for many is not properly chewing foods; this leaves large chunks of food unable to fully break down, leading the body to store it as fat. The next aspect to consider is under eating or not eating often enough to keep the metabolism going. When the body doesn’t get an adequate amount of fuel, the body will immediately assume that it has to store fat in order to survive. Starting the day off without breakfast or going hours without eating is the biggest offender to weight gain. (A quick side note—coffee is absolutely not breakfast or a meal replacement.) On the other end of the spectrum there is over eating, or eating “empty calories.” It is unlikely to have too many vegetables, but it is most definitely possible to over eat processed or over cooked foods that have little to no nutritional value. The majority of people who are constantly hungry are the ones that have a very low nutrient dense life style. Frequently consuming high nutrient dense foods in low or even large amounts will rarely cause weight gain. It is the aspect of absorption, food combination and food quality that determines weight gain.
When the body doesn’t get an adequate amount of fuel, the body will immediately assume that it has to store fat in order to survive. Starting the day off without breakfast or going hours without eating is the biggest offender to weight gain.
There are many individuals out there that already have active, high nutrient dense life styles and still have an issue with losing weight; this is where mental or physical stresses come to play. Depression is known to be a viscous cycle, it can be caused by external stressors or internal imbalances that people might not be aware of. Thyroid imbalances, adrenal stress, lymphatic congestion and high toxicity exposure can not only cause depression, but also be the number one cause to
stubborn weight gain. Depression can manifest into lack of motivation, low energy and therefore lack of mobility. The most effective way to address this is to go to a doctor that will test for thyroid, adrenal, female and male hormone imbalances. There are many ways to naturally boost the thyroid and adrenal system, for example, taking a Lugol’s iodine solution in conjunction with vitamin E and Selenium can help naturally boost the thyroid. For adrenals, taking bio-available B vitamins, amino acids (BCAA’s), Moringa Oleifera extract and trace minerals can naturally boost the health of your overall system, but if levels are clinically low it would be wise to be treated by a professional. Heavy metal and chemical toxicity exposure can also cause the body to store fat as a defense mechanism to protect the organ system—this makes exercise a difficult task for the body. Since the fat is contaminated with an over load of toxins, it does not want to release the fat as energy, and therefore the body utilizes muscle, inhibiting fat loss. The best way to address this is to encourage the body to detox itself. Hot yoga, Aerial yoga, dry saunas, natural whole body detox kits, natural heavy metal chelators like cilantro, Fulvic-Humic minerals and chlorella will help detox the lymphatic system, release water weight and toxins out of the body.
Live and Dry Blood Analysis has the ability to identify underlying causes to most disease and discomfort. The alternative technique looks into Oxidative stress testing (your internal age) digestive imbalances and poor absorption, nutritional deficiencies, acidity levels, yeast/fungal overgrowth, bacterial overgrowth, parasites and more! The last aspect of weight gain to consider is joint pain, injury and inflammation. When the body is inflamed, the ability to get nutrients to the affected area becomes debilitated, causing the injury to sustain for longer periods of time. Maintaining an anti-inflammatory diet that eliminates foods such as dairy, canola and soybean oil, processed sugars and breads will not only assist the body with inflammation but also encourage the body to lose weight. Assisting with supplements like super critical extracted Turmeric, omega 3 fatty acids, MSM, L-Glutamine and Acetyl L-Carnitine will also assist in weight loss and overall inflammation. When it comes to injury the body needs assistance internally as well as externally. Looking into techniques such as rolling out the fascia tissue with a foam roller and lacrosse ball to increase mobility will encourage the body to promote healing and increase chances of weight loss.

I
n order to function properly, the body works tirelessly to keep organic chemicals and compounds in a balanced state known as homeostasis. As a result, the body needs to keep nutrients and certain fluids, like blood, slightly alkaline. When it comes to alkalinity most people have heard of the benefits of having a high alkaline diet, but the clarity of details can become a bit confusing to some. When measuring a person’s acidity levels, science refers to a Ph scale. The pH range is from 0 to 14, with 7.0 being neutral. Anything above 7.0 is alkaline and anything below 7.0 is considered acidic, for a healthy body, the ph measures at approximately 7.4. When the body’s fluids become imbalanced or too acidic, in defense to maintain homeostasis, the body will pull alkaline minerals from neighboring areas such as the bone. According to Dr. Howard F Loomis Jr, D.C.,F.I.A.C.A., if the body continuously stays in a state of acidity the body will be forced to continue to pull minerals, leaving the bones brittle and the body at risk for disorders like, Osteoporosis. In addition to skeletal function, the Ph of the body directly affects the functions and health of the digestive system, circulatory system, immune system and respiratory system.
What causes acidity in the body? There are many factors when it comes to throwing off the balance between acid and alkalinity. The main disorder that excess acid in the body is referred to is called Acidosis. Acidosis is increased acidity in the blood, blood plasma and other body tissue. There are many different types of acidosis that can occur, the first is Metabolic Acidosis. Let’s begin with where everything in the body starts; with diet and digestion. An inadequate amount of mineral water or consumption of poor quality water can be the first offender. Another offender is consumption of too much protein without the consumption of alkaline foods to balance it out. Protein is a very beneficial nutrient, but at extremely high amounts it can cause severe kidney stress. The kidneys are what convert your nutrients into an alkaline state, but if the system is inundated with acids and proteins, it inhibits the kidneys from functioning properly. This causes the kidneys the release acids such as uric acid into the blood. Uric acid builds in the body and blood causing slow muscle recovery, muscle soreness and stiffness, gout and arthritis. Protein is not the only food source that is considered acidic; refer to the acid and alkaline food chart.
36 JANUARY | FEBRUARY 2016
FIT941.COM
Prolonged or excess exercise without properly fueling the system with alkaline foods such as greens will also cause the body to become acidic. When the body is exercised, muscles are being forced to be metabolized, torn and grow. Muscles are essentially protein, therefore making sure alkalizing the body with greens, minerals before, during and after workouts will prevent acidosis, fatigue, muscle cramps and pains. It is a common fact that when the body is exercised the muscle produce lactic acid as a byproduct. But lactic acidosis can occur for many different reasons; including chronic alcohol use, heart failure, seizures, liver failure, prolonged lack of oxygen, and low blood sugar. The other type of the acidosis that can occur is Respiratory Acidosis. This occurs when too much CO2 builds up in the body. Normally the lungs remove CO2 through breathing. However, sometimes the body can’t get rid of enough CO2. This may happen because of: chronic airway conditions, like asthma, smoking, injury to the chest, obesity, which can make breathing difficult, sedative misuse, overuse of alcohol, muscle weakness in the chest and problems with the nervous system. The overall symptoms of Acidosis are yeast and bacterial overgrowth, heart burn, acid reflux, indigestion,
ATHLETES TREATING ATHLETES headaches, chest pains, rapid shallow breathing, confusion, fatigue, lack of appetite and jaundice. If acidosis is suspected, going to a doctor to diagnose acidosis can be done with a series of blood and urine tests. There are also urine ph strips that can be purchased for at home use.
How to balance alkalinity through diet The rule of the thumb is 80% alkaline foods like vegetables and dark leafy greens and 20% acidic foods like protein and fats. The consumption of fruits on an empty stomach in the proper food combination will also assist in increasing alkalinity. Food combining and absorption is another major factor in alkalinity. Certain foods help each other break down and others will inhibit each other; an example of this is proteins and starches. In order to insure both food groups break down properly it is best to separate them from meal to meal. For example, one meal will consist of a type of animal protein, lightly cooked vegetables and a large salad. Your next meal will could consist of a plant based protein like quinoa or a grain or starchy food like rice or sweet potatoes. These foods will also be paired with lightly cooked vegetables and a large salad. For clearer understanding see the alkaline and acid foods chart. Regardless of whether acidosis is present or not, following simple dietary guidelines like above assist in many health benefits, including preventing future acidosis. Knowledge and awareness of what is put in the body through diet is the key to maintaining a healthy life style. For a clearer understanding see an alkaline and acid foods chart at VirtueOfHealth.com.

Ride the Tour de Cure to ‘Stop Diabetes’ By Ellyn Santiago
T
he Tour de Cure, the American Diabetes Association’s signature fundraiser, is commemorating its 25th year in 2016 and Lakewood Ranch is pulling out all the stops in the annual ride, which over the decades has raised tens of millions of dollars for diabetes research in hopes of finding a cure. “Tour de Cure is an opportunity to engage families, businesses, local clubs and various members of the medical community together to train, raise awareness and raise funds to support the mission,” says Melissa Parsons, American Diabetes Association (ADA) manager of fundraising and special events. “The Tour de Cure offers a fun and friendly place for beginners or long distance cyclists to encourage one another and those who have diabetes to stay strong, knowing they have a community behind them, they are not alone,” Melissa explains. 40 JANUARY | FEBRUARY 2016
The southwest Florida Tour de Cure has grown rapidly over the past five years, and, Melissa says, that would not have happened without the “dedication of our teams and sponsors.” She points specifically to teams including the ‘Village Idiots.’ The ‘Village Idiots’ team was the number three fundraising team in 2015, raising more than $23,000. ‘Village Idiots’ team captain Paul Troyer has a personal connection to diabetes and that connection is what propels him. “I ride for my mother, my grandson, and several of my cousins that have diabetes,” he says. “I dream of the day they don't have to give themselves injections and test their blood several times a day.” Melissa describes Paul as a “born leader and encourager; the type of guy who always sees the glass half full.” “Paul motivates the cycling club to do

better, help more people and have fun,” Melissa says. “This group has grown and continues to grow.” ADA Tour de Cure Red Riders are participants who live with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes and, as the ADA says, “Showcase the courage it takes to live every day with this difficult disease. It's time to recognize those women with diabetes who get on their bikes and ride because they are our true heroes.” ‘Village Idiot’ team member Tony Incardona is a Red Rider. “As a diabetes fighter, the Tour is one the most important things to me to help others understand the importance of fighting this terrible disease. I got involved in cycling three years ago with the tour as my goal; it has changed my life in regards to my long term health,” Tony says.
“The Tour de Cure gave me the opportunity to set goals and achieve those goals. My first year allowed me the opportunity to help financially fight a disease that I am affected by. It also gave me the opportunity to train and reach my goal of riding 30 miles on a bike. In year two, I set my goal to ride 60 miles in the Tour and do a century ride in the same year. I fight diabetes and raise money for this outstanding cause to help find a cure that will allow everyone to live a healthy life.” Melissa says Tony has an “awesome attitude and outlook.” “As a Red Rider, he is constantly managing his diabetes, but stays positive and is always willing to encourage other Red Riders,” she says. Tony was the number seven top fundraiser raising more than $3,000 in 2015.
Tour de Cure at Lakewood Ranch The ADA Tour de Cure includes 10m, 20m, 35m, 62m, and 100m route distances. The latter is designed to be a family ride – just 10 miles with all the bells and whistles attached. Slated to be held Sunday April 10, 2016 beginning at Lakewood Main Street in Lakewood Ranch, the Tour de Cure is celebrating its 25th anniversary. More than just a cycling event, it’s a day packed with excitement and energy where riders of all levels join forces in the fight to ‘Stop Diabetes’ and raise critical funds for diabetes research, education and advocacy in support of the ADA. The registration fee is $15 with a fundraising minimum of $200. For more information visit Diabetes.org/swfloridatour, call (813) 885-5007 x 3358 or email Melissa at mparsons@diabetes.org.

ccording to a study done by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS), almost 10 million patients in the United States received cosmetic treatments in 2014. Laser/light/energy based treatments accounted for over 2 million of these patients. Photofacials, also known as Intense Pulsed Light (IPL),
A
BBL(TM) helps remove the signs of sun damage and aging, to keep your skin looking healthy and youthful. BBL(TM) delivers light energy to gently heat the skin and generate new collagen. It uses a broad spectrum of light to precisely target various chromophores (which are substances whose presence is responsible for the color of the compound) in the skin, such as one for pigment in brown spots and a different one for blood vessels. It penetrates and selectively targets these chromophores without damaging or removing the skin. Patients report feeling a warm sensation and a light rubber band snapping feeling during the treatment. Topical numbing cream can be applied prior to the procedure to mitigate some of these sensations, although most people don't require it. It is a quick, relatively pain free, non-invasive treatment, which has no downtime. You might experience mild redness or swelling for 24 hours. There are no wounds to take care of because it does not break the skin, as with laser resurfacing; therefore, there is little risk of scarring. The brown spots will get darker and slowly fade over the next week. You cannot receive this treatment if you are tan. Also, you must avoid direct sun exposure for approximately 1-2 weeks after treatment. The number of treatments needed to correct the damage is tailored to the specific needs and requirements of each individual patient, but the average is 3 initially treatments. The use of a good broad spectrum sunscreen after treatment is absolutely required. The continued use of this sunscreen is recommended to help maintain the health of your skin and the results of your treatment. A recent breakthrough study showed that 2-4 BBL(TM) Forever Young treatments a year, every year, will not only remove visible signs of aging, but also delay the appearance of visible signs of aging, such as large pores, lines, wrinkles, age spots, broken blood vessels, and skin laxity. This unique revolutionary treatment will correct photo-aged skin and maintain youthful skin. It is the first study of its kind to show that continued BBL(TM) treatments will arrest the aging process. BBL(TM) treatments appeal to a broad range of patients. It is beneficial to younger patients who are not sun damaged but want to maintain their healthy skin, or to patients who have had corrective treatments (laser resurfacing, facelifts) performed who want to maintain their new skin, or to patients who do not wish to undergo invasive treatments and just want to preserve and enhance what they have now. As with any procedure, make sure to have a qualified professional performing it. Always ask qualified professional if this procedureis right for you. While BBL(TM) is a relatively safe procedure, an unqualified person could burn or scar you for life.

achieved popularity many years ago. Since then it has become one of the top esthetic procedures performed in the US today. It removes the visible signs of aging, such as brown spots, broken blood vessels, fine lines, and wrinkles. It has become most popular for treatment of the photo-aged face, but many receive treatment of their neck, chest, arms, hands and legs.
