■ WHATS YOUR SECRET WEAPON ■ WOMEN
Research shows that one reason females have difficulty losing weight compared to men is lower levels of testosterone. When they do lose weight, they do not gain muscle mass like men do. Low levels of Testosterone in women can cause unwanted bulging in hips/thighs, infertility, fragile bones, inability to orgasm, and thinning hair. Levels of Testosterone in women vary from 17 to 80 nanograms per deciliter (ng/dL), depending on age and other factors. As they get older, those levels can fall as low as 1 to 10 ng/dl. Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) is equally as beneficial in females as in men, just on a smaller scale.
LIFESTYLE
A healthy lifestyle is associated with higher hormone levels and higher hormone levels seem to induce a more active, healthier lifestyle. Treatments for men are aimed at getting testosterone levels up to an optimal range, around 850 to 1100. Treatments for women are aimed at getting testosterone levels up to an optimal range, around 40 to 60. We offer easy inexpensive testing, saliva, finger prick, blood s e r u m or urine ($25.00 to $50.00).
MEN Research published in the Journal of Endocrinology
shows that low levels of testosterone is a risk factor for heart disease in men and is also linked to Alzheimer’s disease. Levels of Testosterone in men vary from 150 to 1200 nanograms per deciliter (ng/dL), depending on age and other factors. Testosterone levels typically start to decline after age 30. For some men, as they get older, those levels fall to 500 or below. “Low T” has been attributed to low sex drive, sluggish feeling, muscle aches, memory loss, lack of focus and inability to lose weight even while dieting and hitting the Gym.
WEAPON
As with other hormones, conventional medical opinion about testosterone is lagging way behind the scientific evidence. Agevital is your research expert! Let us be your healthcare advocate and help you start LIVING, not just existing. USING EXERCISE TO RE-ALIGN POSTURE, SO YOU MOVE BETTER!
What is Re-alignment Therapy? It’s called the Egoscue Method and it’s a holistic approach to changing posture through whole body exercise. It’s no secret that muscles move bones. If your body has lost its designed posture, it’s because muscles have moved your bones into a new, dysfunctional position. Pain is the body’s way of alerting you to the fact that your body isn’t aligned, and therefore isn’t moving, properly. We use a series of gentle exercises and stretches to return musculoskeletal balance and symmetry back to your body. Correct Functional Alignment
Dysfunctional Alignment
KEY POINTS ABOUT PAIN AND POSTURE: THE SITE OF THE PAIN IS NOT THE SOURCE OF THE PAIN. THE ACTIVITIES WE DO ARE NOT THE CAUSE OF OUR PAIN. THE BODY IS A UNIT AND MUST BE TREATED AS ONE. MISALIGNED POSTURE AND HABITUAL MOVEMENT PATTERNS CAUSE PAIN. POSTURE AND PAIN CAN BE IMPROVED QUICKLY.
“Many things we may take for granted, like sitting with your leg crossed or sitting Indian style on the floor... I can now do with ease that I couldn’t do for a long time. I feel amazing and I move better! I can squat without pain in my back and can enjoy doing movements like clean and jerk again! I’m so thankful for Lauren and this therapy!” -J. S

Also this month, we talk about how to love and care for your feet this summer in our feature Happy Feet (pages 48) . Another subject that rarely comes up in dinner conversation but we believe is important because there’s very little we do on a daily basis as fitness enthusiasts that do not involve our feet. Actually, essentially everything we do with our bodies either involves or impacts our feet. Read the article and then show those tootsies some love!

Tessa Marquette Tessa Marquette started doing CrossFit when she was 13. At the ripe old age of 14, after training for a little over a year, the Bradenton teen placed 13th in the world in 14/15 teen division in the 2016 CrossFit Open. She finished 2nd in the Southeast region, which includes Florida, Georgia, Alabama and South Carolina. “This was my first CrossFit open and I am happy with my performance especially because I wasn't training as much as I am now,” Tessa says. The home-schooled 8th grader began her athletic career as a competitive gymnast at age 4 and stayed with it until she was 12. “Athletics are very important to me and have been for my whole life,” Tessa says. “Ever since I started gymnastics, athletics have played a huge role in my life, and have led to my interest in nutrition, health, sleep, recovery, etc.” Tessa says that while she was no longer involved in competitive gymnastics, at age 13 she decided she “still wanted to keep active.” “I thought that I would give CrossFit a try because it incorporated gymnastics skills and strength within it,” she explains. Tessa trains at CrossFit LWR. Tessa trains every day except Thursdays and Sundays. “I think recovery is a huge thing especially being so young and with as much volume my as training is. Now I am training to qualify for the 2017 CrossFit games.” 12 MAY | JUNE 2016

ith new ownership and a brand new energy and vitality, Pure Barre Lakewood Ranch is taking love of the barre to a whole new level. Owner and instructor Alexandra Nickolai brings her passion, dedication and love of teaching to every class. “I’m a very active, involved and engaged owner,” Alexandra says. “I truly love teaching clients.” And she loves to motivate her students with affirmations that support and inspire. “You are stronger than you think” and “You are amazing. Remember that,” are among them. With the new energy and ownership at Pure Barre LWR also comes a new class, Pure Barre Platform, which will premiere in May. As described by Pure Barre and Alexandra, Platform is a “new fast-paced class designed to optimize cardiovascular results and increase total body strength.” “This heart-pumping class combines quick bursts of high intensity, yet low impact cardio work with periods of lower intensity muscle-sculpting movements. These 55 minutes of high-energy, fun and intense interval training at the barre will help burn calories, jump-start metabolism, and increase overall endurance.” “It is the perfect cardio complement to a Pure Barre class to help clients achieve even greater results, while still holding onto the traditional pieces and parts of a Pure Barre class that we all know and love,” says Alexandra. And with a special for new clients of one month of unlimited Pure Barre classes during the months of May and June for $89 (regularly $99), now’s the time to check it out, Alexandra says. ombining the “knowledge of science and the wisdom of nature,” Dr. Ricardo Morales has been practicing Oriental Medicine in Sarasota for more than 12 years after having received his degree from the East-West College of Natural Medicine where he later taught Chinese herbal medicine and supervised student clinic interns. Morales has extensive training in acupuncture, herbal medicine, homeopathic and vitamin injections, guasha, and cupping and is board-certified. Morales says he can help restore client health through the “application of safe, effective therapeutic techniques of acupuncture, vitamin injections, homeopathics and customized herbal formulas.” At his Sarasota studio, located at 1241 Fruitville Road, Morales provides acupuncture, Chinese massage, homeopathic and herbal medicine, facial rejuvenation, and acupuncture injection therapy. He also provides ‘Lipo-Mino-Mix’ injections for weight loss and muscle toning. The Lipo-Mino Mix starts with a special Lipotropics fat-burning combination of methionine, inositol, choline, carnitine and B12. Each of these ingredients helps the body turn fat into energy and are also powerful antioxidants. In addition to the Lipotropics blend, Lipo-Mino also contains a mixture of B vitamins which further help to facilitate fat loss and increase energy. The formula is then completed by adding ingredients to reduce appetite, to build muscle and promote a healthy immune system.

Athlete Profile Sweat’s Gone. Game On.
“S
outhwest Florida is arguably one of the hottest places in the U.S. But that doesn’t stop us from playing sports and engaging in our favorite outdoor activities 12 months out of the year,” says SAAKA creator and owner, Steven Wieder. “We needed something better to prevent sweat from compromising our passions. SAAKA bands were born out of necessity on Siesta Key, where we know and understand best how to handle heat and humidity.”
Christian Evanoff There isn’t a sport 13-year-old Christian Evanoff hasn’t played, except maybe pickleball. Christian, a Sarasota Middle School student, began his athletic career at age 3 with T-ball. Since then Christian has played or participated in, well, you-nameit: baseball, football, and basketball on school teams; as well as lacrosse, soccer, and tennis; then there’s golf, track and field, surfing, skateboarding, and skiing. But of all of these sports, his greatest passion is snowboarding. “If I lived in Utah, I’d snowboard the rest of my life,” the teenager says. “I started skiing (on a family vacation to Utah when he was about 3) and then when I turned 5, I started snowboarding. We go there like twice a year so I’m pretty good for a kid who lives in Florida.” Christian began taking lessons when he was 8, he says, to “learn how to go down the mountain,” but otherwise, is self-taught. And he has nearly mastered myriad snowboarding maneuvers including a 60-foot jump, rails, and boxes, but plans on nailing the backflip next winter. Christian says he’s thinking about going to college in Utah maybe so he can continue to catch air on a snowboard. And he says, he’d love to be a professional snowboarder. “It’d be hard though living in Florida,” he says, but adds that he could possibly be a professional baseball or basketball player. “I’d love to be a professional athlete.”
SAAKA uses super absorbent, odor combating, VISCOSE from BAMBOO fabric between layers of antimicrobial poly/spandex wicking fabric. Moisture is wicked away from the skin to the absorbent, anti-odor middle layer, and then drawn to the surface air where it can evaporate. No more slippery hands or sweat in the eyes. The athlete’s grip remains dry and secure. Vision stays clear and sharp. “We all want to keep sweat out of the way of our game,” Wieder says. “SAAKA is a simple and effective concept that solves a frustrating problem.” In addition to its product line of high performance headbands, wristbands and armbands, all including bamboo fabric, SAAKA, a Sarasota-based sport apparel accessories company is excited to announce its latest product, the NeckGuard Plus. Described as “versatile,” by Wieder, the neck guard can be worn four different ways to protect one’s neck, face and head from getting too much sun. “We use UVEIL 50+ SPF fabric, so you can be certain the protection you need is there,” Wieder says. “But instead of excess, bunched-up fabric at the back of your neck making you hot and soaked, SAAKA places our wider, triple- layered band to pull sweat off the back of your neck to keep you cool and comfortable.” The NeckGuard Plus is one-size-fits-all and comes in black-gray camouflage, navy blue and turquoise colors. “For the SAAKA your game!” For more information on SAAKA products, visit Saaka.Com.

OTF Launches ‘OTBeat’ App
O
rangetheory Fitness is taking another step in employing technology as a cornerstone in advancing fitness and a healthy lifestyle for their members. Members are now able to track their entire fitness lifestyle, inside and outside of Orangetheory Fitness studios, with their OTBeat App, recently released to the public.
Orangtheory Fitness has taken the nation by storm with their heart rate-based interval training and complete full body workouts. A key factor in Orangetheory’s model is working members through five key heart rate zones at very specific times, accomplished through real-time tracking of each member’s heartrate while in an Orangetheory class. Orangetheory’s tool for this, appropriately called OTBeat, has proven to be so effective for members that other fitness companies are struggling to create something comparable. Now, Orangetheory is making OTBeat even more effective; it not only tracks what a member accomplishes in an Orangethoery Studio including heart-rate zones, calories burned, and Orangetheory’s metabolic indicator called “Splat” points, but also tracks fitness and activities outside the studio as well. This gives members a completely comprehensive look at their fitness lifestyle, their caloric burn, what they can do to increase “splat” points and more. The app works seamlessly with OTBeat equipment like heart-rate monitors specific to Orangetheory that can easily be worn throughout the day. “The ability for members to track both what happens inside of an Orangetheory Studio during workout and what is happening outside the studio; walks or runs, calories and heart-rate, is a huge tool for our members,” says Heather Flannagan, Regional Manager for Orangetheory Sarasota. “It adds a complete lifestyle monitor to their lives. LWR Football League Delays Start Until 2017
L
akewood Ranch-based Major League Football, a new, professional spring-football league, recently announced 2016 will be its ‘development season’ and has rescheduled its inaugural year to begin March of 2017, according to a MLFB media release.
“It means days filled with friendship, a job that's all about fun, and a life of freedom, but it wasn’t always this way. Not long ago, I was a stressed-out working mom with a boring job, just trying to make ends meet, when I saw this amazing picture on Facebook,” Peters explains. “Before I knew it I was earning free wraps and cash and having a blast doing it. Best of all, the checks kept getting bigger and bigger every month. I was able to pay off my credit cards and student loans with this crazy wrap thing. Now I've quit my job,” she says. “I'm able to spend more time with my kids, and my family is living debt-free. I've got the life I've always dreamed of, and you can have it too.” For more information, visit BoomItWorks. MyItWorks.com. 20 MAY | JUNE 2016
The statement read, in part, that “In closed-door sessions MLFB management, coaches, player representatives and the league’s business partners agreed to use the current season to further develop players, plan for staffing in cities and provide ample time for ticketing agencies and the League’s broadcasting partner to advertise and market the League’s formal kick-off in 2017.” “Over the past four months MLFB has selected over 600 players from various tryout camps, player drafts and free agency. Throughout the 2016 ‘development year,’ the league will continue to engage the coaching staff to ensure all players will be prepared for a successful spring 2017 season on and off the field. Once formalized, Major League Football will announce and publicize a detailed Player Developmental Strategy to be executed by MLFB’s Management Team, head coaches and player representatives,” the statement read. In addition to the $120 million it expects to receive from investors pursuant to recently announced letter of intent for financing that would provide MLFB with capital and credit line facilities, other additional investments of capital are also expected, according to an MLFB media statement. For more information about MLFB, visit MlfbMedia.com.

D
efinition Fit is offering Muscle Activation Technique (MAT™) at its Sarasota studio.
Developed by Greg Roskopf, MAT™ was created out of his frustration with traditional approaches to athletic strength and conditioning. Roskopf holds a master’s degree in Health and Fitness and has experience and expertise as a Strength and Conditioning Specialist who’s worked alongside physical therapists. And it was while he was working with PT’s, that he observed exercises used to correct performance issues. Most specialists were focused on improving range of movement, joint strength and stability. Roskopf immersed himself in study and combined what he’d learned: tightness/weakness, agonist/antagonist, ROM, and more to develop what is now known as MAT™. The MAT™ technique helps athletes recover from competitive stress quickly and helps to prevent future injuries while preparing the body to train and preform more efficiently. Athletes seeking to reach optimal performance are often forced to train at high-intensity levels, which comes with risk of injury. For some, muscular contraction inefficiencies place increased stress on joints and tissue. When training at high levels, inefficiencies are magnified, and tax the body. It’s like driving a car with bad alignment; the faster you drive it, the quicker the tires wear out.

Conventional therapy will typically treat the symptom, but the cause of the problem is typically left unaddressed. The end result is that the athlete does not heal, or they go on to experience repetitive injuries or a more severe injury. The goal of MAT™ is to address the weakness before an injury occurs. here are many components in a healthy sex life—energy, desire, honesty, agility, emotion, communication and imagination among them. A healthy sex life requires balancing these components to find joy and gratification for yourself and your partner. A plethora of books have been written on healthy sexuality, but this focus is on the benefit of how a fit lifestyle impacts sexual performance.
T
The good news is there is not just one perfect formula for sexual satisfaction. A woman who wears a size 2 can find happiness with a husky lumberjack, and a ‘Rubenesque’ lady can enjoy a romp with a Kentucky Derby jockey (or another ‘Rubenesque’ lady for that matter). Researchers agree, however, that whether large or small, people will find sex more appealing and enjoyable if they (and their partner) are pursuing basic fitness goals such as regular exercise, stretching, cardio conditioning and sensible nutrition. Our modern culture promotes sleeker silhouettes at every turn, and that can be a good motivator, but realistic expectations and the simple act of accepting yourself are important mental conditioning, as well. Yoga practitioners find whole body rejuvenation in the poses they practice, enhancing circulation, flexibility, selfconfidence, body sensitivity, muscle
control, core stability, range of motion and stress elimination. Local yoga instructor Jillian Walker says, “First and foremost, a healthy sex life begins within your own mind.” “What does your relationship to yourself look like? Do you love yourself? Do you like the way your body looks and feels? Are you kind to yourself and conscious of your well-being,” Walker asks rhetorically. “A healthy sex life begins with strong, positive connections. Sex is not just about the orgasm. It has the potential to be a deeply satisfying experience that can enhance your well-being,” Walker says. “The number one yogic benefit to sex is meditation.” Walker recommends the following mental and physical exercise: Find a quiet place where you can sit comfortably, with your back straight, close your eyes and begin to focus on your breath. Start breathing deep into your belly, bring the breath all the way through the diaphragm, lower lungs, upper lungs, and invite the shoulders back, then slowly exhale, compressing belly, diaphragm, lungs. Take five slow and steady breaths in this manner. Then, slowly repeat in your mind, and then aloud, each of these affirmations, three times each: ‘I love myself. I love my body. I am full of love. I am full of
compassion. I am comfortable with my sexuality. I am beautiful. I am radiant. Life is for me.’ Lucia Gabriela is a Sarasota-based life coach and massage therapist who counsels individuals, couples and groups on fitness, nutrition, intimacy and sexuality. Gabriela is a proponent of balance in peoples’ lives—with a conscious effort to tend to your mental, physical, emotional, spiritual and sexual systems on a regular and sustained basis. Physical fitness and exercise are important but that too much time devoted to workouts will crowd out attention to the other aspects of life, Gabriela says. “They gym is not necessarily the best place to condition your whole self. If too much energy is focused on physical fitness, it will ultimately hurt the libido,” she says. “And drugs can’t restore the ideal balance; it must come from within.” Gabriela recommends that people keep a life journal to keep track of and reflect on the amount of time they devote to all these areas. Yoga is also a way to enhance your sexual performance, Gabriela says. “It helps with flexibility, agility and especially circulation, which she describes as mirroring the orgasmic cycle of stimulating, expanding and relaxing,” she says. “It’s important for people to be fit to achieve maximum sexual performance. Good circulation will help with erection and orgasm, and yoga’s mind clarity can make sex more fulfilling.” Gabriela conducts retreats focusing on energy, emotional healing, loving oneself, achieving balance and attracting others. Upcoming ‘Seminars on Sexuality’ begin July 18 with a retreat in Sarasota on July 22 featuring Australian Andrew Barnes, who is an internationally recognized expert on male and female orgasm as well as tantric sex. These experts all seem to agree that real fitness as it relates to sex is more than lifting weights and fitting into that tight black sweater. It’s all about the balance. Go for it! Lucia Gabriela can be reached at 516-287-0242 or visit SacredLoveTemple.com.

hemed weddings are hot but none are more fire than fitness-themed weddings. Even before the walk down the aisle, preceremony traditions can be fit-focused; think bridal party boot camps, a little sweating before the wedding, and bachelor parties at the gym. But it’s the actual wedding where the fit fun happens.
Kayla is now an Anesthesia Resident Physician in Houston, Texas and Ian is in the Air Force. The couple will marry in June and have planned a “Wedding WOD that we can do together this year and every year on our anniversary,” Kayla says.
Engagement Parties/Photos
Kayla Rohleder and Ian Matthews held their engagement photo shoot at CrossFit Bradenton. The couple had met while both were intern physicians at Manatee Memorial Hospital. It helped that they both had a passion for fit, healthy lifestyles. They fell in love at CrossFit.
Beginning with the invitations so guest know what to expect, one idea posted online had a invitation that resembled a marathon or road race card with a nod to the starting line; the couple is at the starting line for the run of a lifetime, for example. Or try puns ‘We can’t ‘weight’ to get married!’ The limit here is the couple’s imagination.
“We bonded over our shared drive for fitness and a healthy lifestyle, so it only made sense to do our

Wedding Invitations
Fit brides are saying yes to a dress that best shows off her physique. Sleeveless, strapless, short or even body-con (tight, fitted) dresses beautifully flatter a toned, muscular frame. Bridesmaids too can wear similar dresses. One fit wedding where couples posted their pictures online featured bridesmaids wearing pastel camisoles with full, off-white organza and taffeta skirts and pastelmatching sneakers. The choices are limitless, but whatever dress style is chosen, it better show off that bod.
Bouquet
While we’re talking about the bride, the bouquet too can fit the ‘fit’ theme. One way to get fit, besides exercise is to eat healthy foods. A bouquet can feature edible flowers like English chamomile, chervil, African marigolds, pansies and violets, flowering and fragrant herbs like lavender, mint, lemon balm and rosemary and finally the dénouement, purple-leafed kale for structure and balance. Create a beautiful, edible, healthy bouquet everyone will want to catch.
Reception
Let’s get to the party. Here is where a fit-theme can be fully realized whether it’s for a couple of boxers or crossfitters. The sky’s the limit on the type of decorations but recent photos of

fit-weddings posted online show everything from reception dinner tables named for specific exercises, like the lunge or squat table with the card affixed to a dumb bell. Name placeholders might be designed in the shape of hand weights, or as one couple did, a piece of fresh fruit have each guest’s named pinned to it. Tables feature trophies as vases and live, potted flowering herbs or vegetables as favors for guests to take home. The wedding cake topper is another opportunity to showcase the theme with the bride and groom lifting or, where the groom lifts the bride, or even cooler, the bride lifts the groom. There are scores of other great ideas online at sites like PopSugar.com and of course on Pinterest.

Like Kayla and Ian, many couples choose to have their engagement photos done in the gym where they met utilizing equipment as props. But the day-of-the-wedding photos, unless the couple is actually married in a gym, won’t have those same props to play with. But a bit of online research reveals myriad unique ideas for fit-themed wedding pics. We loved images of an entire wedding party in sneakers at a faux race starting line and another where the bride and her bridesmaids posed flexing with dumb bells. Photo booths are trendy and a lot of fun for any big event but are especially awesome at weddings. Some include cut-outs that guests and the wedding party pose with including one found online that featured a giant cut-out of a Muscle & Fitness magazine cover, with lots of fitness-related props to play with in the photos.

“STRETCH ABIL I TY” is it for you? by Tina Lagassey oes stretching improve athletic performance? Although there is substantial amount of research on the subject, it is still an area up for debate in the fitness world. According to the National Academy of Sports Medicine, “The latest research published in Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise helps answer the question of how pre-exercise static stretching protocols impact maximal performance. Based on the findings, static stretching has its place in the warm-up, but the key to maintaining performance is how long the stretch is held.”
D
Local, professional stretchers at the Stretchzone seem to have it figured; it offers passive and painfree stretching. Jorden Gold, known as ‘Stretch,’ pioneered a revolutionary movement in health and fitness. Gold is an international expert on stretching, a licensed provider of education for the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Body Work, instructor at Hands School of Massage Miami and operator of one of the most 32 MAY | JUNE 2016

respected stretch-therapy companies in the industry. “We developed StretchZone’s Conversion Kit and Stretch Cells of systematic stretches, so that people are not fighting the resistance of their own body,” Gold says. Why mention Miami-based Gold? Because Miami has come to Bradenton in the form of Kevin Hall, one of Gold’s most devoted students and his protégé. Hall is a Certified Personal Trainer who became a stretcher following his passion for helping people. “I didn’t think I would be so good at it,” he laughs. But he’s better than good. Indeed, Bob Rustigan, owner and manager of Stretchzone, says he wishes he could have Hall cloned. The Stretchzone Manifesto states, “The limiting factor to achieving full range of motion is not the length or elasticity of muscle the nervous control of the tension via the stretch reflex.” So in order to truly understand stretching and whether or not it is necessary or advantageous to the athlete, Stretchzone offers this analogy: “Think of a car seatbelt. If you pull too quickly, it locks. If you continue to force it, you’re just stretching the material itself---that’s what it means to micro-strain a muscle. However, if you were to pull your car seatbelt nice, smoothly and controlled, it will come out much farther.” Debating the question of whether stretching improves athletic performance, for professionals, is not much of a debate. Increasing and maintaining range of motion for an athlete is invaluable, especially when it comes to injury prevention. Most athletes seek sports therapists after they have an injury. Consider being the athlete that adds stretch therapy to the daily or weekly routine to prevent injury because when you’ve worked this hard to get to where you, don’t take a chance that your range of motion, flexibility, and “stretch ability” isn’t the best it could be.

The show features teams of four working cooperatively to traverse a landscape full of mud pits, fallen trees, and a series of man-made hazards that push the mind and body to their 42 MAY | JUNE 2016
limits – all while trying to outrun and outmaneuver the opposition. Athletes from across the country – including our very own Sarasota – converged upon rural Georgia, where they spent eight days filming the race, which is set to air in June. While contractual obligations prevent participants from divulging the gritty details, both Adam and Kelli Jaco said the experience was brand new to them, but they are officially interested in doing more. “My first time ever competing in an obstacle race was on NBC,” Kelli says. “The show really propelled us into it. My husband and I are avid runners, and in obstacle course racing it takes a good runner to do well – along with strength to carry heavy things. There’s a whole gambit of things you have to do.”

he producers of NBC’s wildly successful American Ninja Warrior are back with a brand new show that pits athletes against grueling obstacles for a cash prize of $250,000. Inspired by the worldwide Spartan Race franchise that sees wouldbe warriors from all walks of life competing in a long-distance run riddled with rope climbs, rock walls, ice baths, and raging fires to leap over, Spartan: Ultimate Team Challenge promises to up the intensity by delivering “one of the most demanding courses ever devised.”
A retired professional boxer, Adam says the physical and mental stress of Spartan was nothing compared to fighting in the ring. The biggest challenges came in the form of testing the bond between teammates and dealing with the inherent distractions associated with filming a high-quality reality-TV show.
earn their spot on the show, Kelli says it was the working-parents, feelgood image that enticed the show’s producers. The couple is also full-time parents of two kids. “We had interviews and we talked about our families – we both have children,” Kelli says. “And I think the
producers at NBC loved us for our story as far as being parents – working parents – trying to inspire our children.” Those interested in seeing local athletes compete on Spartan: Ultimate Team Challenge can catch the show’s worldwide premiere June 20 at 10 p.m. EST on NBC, and every Monday thereafter.
“It was like Ninja Warrior in the woods – it kind of threw us for a loop,” Adam says. “The entire time we’re running the race, there were hundreds of camera men, cameras in the woods mounted to trees, drones chasing after you. But that didn’t bother me one bit, not at all. Now, how it plays out on TV? … Of course I’m a little nervous [about that]. I’m wondering how this plays out. The good news is, this is NBC and they’re looking more for feel-good stories.” Adam and Kelli own Jaco's Boxing, MMA + Fitness Gym on Lawton Drive in Sarasota, which they used as a homebase for much of their team’s training. While their dedication to fitness and innate Spartan prowess helped them

so, you wanna do your first
TRIATHLON? ave you been curious about the triathlon lifestyle, but not sure where to start? Feeling a bit intimidated? Wondering where you will find the time? This article will guide you through some tips to get started in the sport of triathlon.
H
There are four distances of triathlon. Most first timers start with the sprint distance triathlon. This typically consists of a 400 meter swim, a 13 mile bike and a 3.1 mile run. The next distance up, would be the Olympic distance race, and this is a 1500 meter swim, 26 mile bike and 6.2 mile run. Moving on to long distance racing will get you a Half Iron distance with 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike, 13.1 mile run and finally, the big dog, The Iron distance race. The Ironman consists of a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike and 26.2 mile run, all completed within 17 hours. When you are first getting started in triathlon, your main goals should be to have fun and remain injury free. The beautiful thing about the sport of triathlon is anyone can do the sport with proper training. You don’t have to be fast, skinny, uber fit or have awesome hand/eye coordination, you just have 44 MAY | JUNE 2016
to have a passion to train, meet new people and have fun.
As a beginner, you do not need to go out and spend a fortune on the latest and greatest gear. The most important pieces of gear you need to get started are a swim cap, goggles, any old bike and a pair of good running shoes.
Let’s discuss each of the three disciplines First off, the first leg of the race is the swim. Unless a person comes to the sport from a swimming background, most are weaker swimmers and many have a great fear of the open water swim. I would recommend taking a few swim lessons to get started. It is normal to fear moving your swim to the open water. As a long time triathlon coach, this is one area where I have seen the most tears shed. Don’t feel embarrassed to be afraid to swim in open water, most new swimmers have this fear. You are not alone. The more you practice, the more comfortable you will become. Be sure to swim at least a few times in the open water, before your first race. It will alleviate a lot of stress come race day.

A lot of triathletes get their start on an old or borrowed bike. Before you make an investment on a bike, be sure you are going to stick with the sport. There is a large variance in price points. You don’t need the most expensive bike to start. One thing that IS very important, however, is a proper bike fit. A proper bike fit will give you more efficiency on the bike, as well as cut down on the risk of injury. Be sure to always wear a helmet. Finally, we get to the run. This discipline requires the most effort, but the least amount of gear. All you need is a pair of running shoes. If you are unsure on what kind of shoes to wear, I would suggest going to a reputable running shop and having them watch you run. This will allow you to learn which type of shoe fits your particular running style. This is the area where

the chance of injury is the highest and a properly fit pair of shoes, will alleviate the risk of injury. Lastly, pick a race to train for and find a coach or an online plan, so that you are building your training volume and intensity in a safe manner. All athletes are different. Some prefer the guidance and accountability of having a coach. A coach can also help you learn to balance your training time with family life. Others are fine working independently with an online plan. Just be sure to pick one of these options versus winging it on your own. Triathlon is a wonderful life style. It will bring you a level of fitness you have never known, improve medical issues, increase your energy levels and open you up to meeting a whole new circle of friends who love to live a healthy and positive life.

Time for a Spring Cleaning o most, the mention of a “cleanse” will have people flinching at the word; running to assumptions that it’s all about being stuck on a toilet for days. Although there are some cleanses that are exactly that, not all cleanses are the same yet all are equally important. To simplify the concept of rapid aging, it all comes down to stress. Just as all cleanses are not the same, neither are the different types of stresses that may speed up the aging process.
T
There is a cellular type of stress that can occur when the level of toxins in the body has become unmanageable to our organs. When the body’s “chemical bank” is full, so are its stress levels, leaving the body unable to successfully repair itself, thus the look of “aging” can occur. When the body is relieved of these stresses, it is now able to address what’s most important, healing and maintaining a healthy system. Heavy metals and chemicals are hidden in everything; from the foods we eat, to the products we use to wash our bodies, and moisturize our skin. Over time these toxins build up in the system, causing a wide range of symptoms that can be difficult to pinpoint. According to Kaayla T. Daniel, PhD, CCN and Galen D. Knight, PhD, symptoms of elevated heavy metals and toxins can range from fatigue, digestive stress, reduced ability to absorb and utilize nutrients, aching joints, acidity, depression, impaired blood sugar 46 MAY | JUNE 2016
regulation, and above all inability to lose weight or have clear skin. HEAVY METALS AND CHEMICALS TO AVOID The adage, “If you can’t eat it or pronounce it, don’t put it in or on your body,” is a good rule of thumb to follow. Avoiding processed foods that contain a high amount of preservatives is always a give in, but a lot of toxins are related to products that also touch the food before consumption. Using glass, cast iron, carbon steel, titanium, and enamel cookware instead of stainless steal, aluminum and non-stick cookware will help prevent leaching and exposure to nickel and carcinogens. THE BENEFITS OF CLEANSING Avoiding further toxin exposure will insure the bodies toxin levels will not increase at a rapid rate, but it will not insure that the body will have the ability to properly relieve itself of these toxins without a little help from the right diet, exercise and of course, proper detoxification. Cleansing also assists in proper brain function, concentration, memory retention, overall energy, proper rested sleep, digestive function, skin health, eye health, hearing, immune health, and above all disease prevention. CLEANSING HERBS AND FOODS Amino Acids- Amino acids are great at removing metals from the body, and can work to increase liver health and balance enzyme production. Can be

found in supplement form or naturally occurring in fruits and dark leafy greens as well as proteins. Cilantro- Cilantro is just one superherb that can effectively remove heavy metals (aluminum, mercury, and lead in particular) – in only two weeks. Also, because these metals can damper the immune system, cilantro is also recognized as an immune-booster. Food-Grade Activated Charcoal- Not only is it good for detoxifying; this includes detoxing heavy metals. It is also great at absorbing other toxins preventing detoxification symptoms that can cause discomfort during a cleanse. Brazil Nuts- Not necessarily a chelation food, Brazil nuts actually work to restore the good minerals, like selenium and zinc, that may be lost in the chelation process. Onions and garlic- The sulfur in onions and garlic can also work to eliminate heavy metals. Along with these, things like cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, and cabbage also have high sulfur content. Chlorella- The extract is found in “green” plants and foods. It can be found in powder of liquid form and is best paired with cilantro. Both work together to chelate the body and push out toxins. Artichokes-Artichokes help the liver function at its best, by increasing the liver’s production of bile, and since bile helps break down foods which
helps your body use the nutrients inside them, an increase in bile production is typically a good thing. It’s also filled with fiber, protein, magnesium, folate, and potassium. Asparagus- Not only does it help to detoxify the body, it is also considered anti-aging, anti-cancer, heart healthy, and is a general antiinflammatory food. It’s also known to help with liver drainage relieving overall stress on the organ. Beets- When detoxing, they will help by making sure that the toxins actually make it out of the body. Many detox cleanses go wrong when toxins are reintroduced to the body because they don’t make it all the way out. Beets also help with free-radicals, making them an anti-cancer aid. Among these examples are only a small percentage of the foods and herbs that can naturally cleanse and rebalance the body. It is never too late to detox the system of unwanted chemicals. Most natural food stores have an abundant selection of detox kits that can kick start the system and prevent the onset of illness in the future. eonardo DaVinci said the “human foot is a masterpiece of engineering and a work of art.” Indeed, with 26 bones in each, the foot is a marvel that at once propels us and keeps us steady. We rely on our feet for support in virtually every activity we do from the pedestrian like standing, walking even sitting to the more vigorous like kicking while swimming, tapping out a beat, running a marathon, or dancing a jig. Name an activity and the foot’s likely involved in some way. And like a masterpiece, they are precious. But we often forget them …until they hurt, sting or blister, crack, peel, or itch. Oh, the woes of your toes! Bunions, corns, ingrown toenails, serious athlete’s foot, or worse, even, like bone spurs, tendonitis, or arthritis. So much more can go wrong. Want happy feet? Show them some love.
L
healthy feet are happy feet by Ellyn Santiago
FEET FIRST! Starting with caring for those puppies, The American Orthopedic Society advises that people, especially athletes, pay attention to sweaty feet which can lead to all kinds of issues from rashes to eczema and often more serious cases of athlete’s foot so making sure to change your socks daily and allowing shoes to dry is important. Toenails should be trimmed – straight across -- but not too short.
And watch out for possible toenail funguses and treat at home or if the fungus seems more serious, see a podiatrist for a possible course of oral antifungal meds. Bunions, or hallux valgus in the Latin, can be annoying but worse, should they persist, could result in surgery, so if you have one, treat it – same with corns which the result of too much pressure when the skin is squeezed between bones and shoes. The American Orthopedic Society also suggests that common sense basic foot first aid is really important. Cuts should be cleaned, treated and dressed immediately so as to avoid infection. And for runners and walkers, that errant nail you’ve stepped upon that’s punctured your skin? Have any wound examined by a health care provider. A nail doesn’t have to be rusty to potentially cause an infection …or worse. Take it seriously. And care for your feet extends beyond first aid, podiatrists agree. Treat them with love. Pedicures are a gift, albeit not free though you can DIY at home beautifully. A good soapy soak and scrub followed by exfoliation with a pumice stone to remove callouses and a good trim of the toenails is a great start. But take it further. Massages, reflexology, paraffin waxes, and lots of moisture should make your feet happy. STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION With feet, it is most definitely not one size fits all. If you’ve got a very narrow or very wide foot or if your feet are unusually small or atypically large, or if you have high arches or flat feet, getting the right fit can be a hassle at best. And podiatrists advise that a properly 48 MAY | JUNE 2016

fitted shoe is a must if you want to prevent foot problems. Many shoe stores stock only common or popular sizes so getting the best fit can be challenging. But there are a number of great places in the 941 to get the perfect fit. David Jackson, owner of New Balance Sarasota and University Park and Fleet Feet Sports Sarasota and certified pedorthist, says the best way to get the proper fit, which can make your feet both healthy and happy, is with a professional. According to the American Board for Certification in Orthotics, a certified pedorthist is an “allied health professional specifically educated and trained to manage comprehensive pedorthic patient care …including fitting, fabricating, adjusting or modifying devices” to address conditions which affect the feet and lower limbs. “Working with a shoe fitting professional is essential to getting the best shoes for your feet and activities,” David says. “Since sizes vary between shoe brands and styles, just because you are an 8-medium with one manufacturer, you might be a 9-narrow
in another. Also, be sure the fit expert measures both feet because most people have one foot longer or wider and then pick a pair of shoes that accommodates the larger foot.” Kimmi van der Veen, manager at Fit2Run in downtown Sarasota says getting the right fit in your running shoe is “incredibly important.” “You can push yourself to new limits whether in pace or distance or both,” she says when explaining why fit is important. “At Fit2Run, we approach it like a three-dimensional puzzle and we gather information about foot size – length and width – pressure points, and gait while in motion.” Van der Veen, an RRCA-certified running coach says Fit2Run “trained professional fit experts encourage runners to share with us what they are experiencing with regards to cushion, size, support, upper and lacing options, etcetera, so that we can continue to recommend the best fit. Bottom line is this: go to a trained fit specialist. There is no substitute, hands down."

Elevator Lunge with an Overhead Press
The ‘Elevator Lunge with an Overhead Press’ exercise is done in four seconds going down and four seconds coming back. The exercise works the quads, glutes, hamstrings and shoulders.
On the machine:
Starting position has your back foot on the moving platform carriage of the Megaformer and the front foot on the fixed, stationary platform.
As you begin to go back with the lunge, you're making an eccentric muscle contraction, performing it slowly on a four-count. It increases the calorie burn and is incredibly effective in building strength and shedding fat.
As you go back, you raise the barbell overhead for the shoulder press. This requires a great deal of core and upper body strength, and the complicated move burns more calories as well.
This exercise can be performed without the
“It's become the established way of thinking that doing combination, multi-step exercises can be much more beneficial than just performing a single, one muscle isolated move,” says Whit. “Combining lower body and upper body moves together will almost always burn more calories, shed more fat, work the core, and give better results in the same period of time."
Without the Machine:
On the way back up, you are creating a concentric muscle contraction for the same four-count, as you work hard to keep control on the exercise, while simultaneously bringing the barbell back down to the starting position.
machine, though it will not have the same amount of resistance. This excludes the barbell, but can be done just about any place at any time with zero equipment while still working the same basic muscle groups, quads, glutes, hamstrings and core and shoulders when the overhead press is included.

What
Protein
by Seth L
Is Right for You? hen it comes to diet, one key element stands out for fitness and health above all others: protein. Protein is absolutely essential for muscle repair, immunity and balanced blood sugar. Consumption of a minimum quantity of protein daily is mandatory for overall health. Potential sources of protein are plentiful. For decades, debate has raged about which sources of protein are healthiest. Obviously, more than a half-century ago, consumers did not have access to the kinds of supplements, powders, shakes and enhanced foods that are available today at gyms, health food stores and supermarkets. Traditional and primary sources of protein were found in the foods of the day, including beef, chicken, pork, fish and dairy items.
W
As the health food and supplement industries developed around fitness and athletics, protein began to be examined more in depth and specific makeup and benefits of exact proteins were studied. Protein-centric products were created using a variety of methods and sources which continued to be refined to this day. 52 MAY | JUNE 2016
We now know that while some foods are very complete and proteinrich, they may bring undesirable components such as saturated fats, toxins, hormones and allergens. Different proteins have different benefits for the body and not all bodies are alike in terms of being able to make use of the proteins that are consumed. Some of the more popular proteins on the market today include supplementbased soy proteins, whey proteins and plant-based proteins such as those from rice, peas, beans and/or hemp, grains and algae. Unlike meat or fish-based proteins, the protein content in these other sources is usually concentrated, free of antibiotics, hormones, mercury, dioxin and other contaminants. Proteins must also be of the right size and structure that can be readily absorbed by the body. Different protein "fractions," or components, will determine digestibility in the body. Some common protein fractions are casein, globulin and albumin. Most
FIT941.COM
supplements list the protein fractions contained within them. Because there are too many to list here, you can research specific fractions on the Internet to see exactly what their benefits and effects are. In general, proteins need to be isolated from other food elements such as pectin to be maximally useful. In a number of foods, these other elements may inhibit protein absorption by the body even if they contain protein in high amounts or saturation. For this reason, protein supplements may be a better source for your protein than food, which can contain unhealthy fats and carbohydrates. Whey protein, which is extracted from dairy sources, is extremely concentrated and absorbable by the body. It also has a high BCAA content so it's great for those who want to build muscle mass. It happens to be an excellent detoxifier and immune system booster. In fact, all of the amino acids necessary for health are present in whey protein.
Soy protein is noted for its phytoestrogen content, which lowers the risk of heart disease, osteoporosis and breast cancer in moderate quantities. Soy protein isolate is the optimum type of soy protein as it contains less cholesterol and fat than soy protein concentrates. In addition to whey protein and soy protein, many plant-based proteins, especially those from algae such as spirulina, rice and yellow peas are tremendously beneficial. Algaebased proteins typically have a higher concentration of protein than any other natural food source. They also contain all essential amino acids and are extremely absorbable in digestion. Rice protein is also highly digestible. If you can find it with the added amino acid lysine this is ideal. If you can't, yellow peas are the source of one of the newest proteins that are high in this essential nutrient. When both rice and yellow pea proteins are taken together, their combined benefits can approach those of dairy and egg proteins, but without any potential allergic effects that some consumers may be sensitive to. Ultimately, how your body reacts to these different protein sources may be the best determinant of which types are best for you. For people with dairy allergies or for those who want to consume high quantities of protein supplements, plant-based proteins may be optimal. Many people say they like the taste of yellow pea protein, which has a fluffy texture and is both gluten- and cholesterol-free. Others simply say they want to avoid the downsides of consuming beef, chicken, pork or fish. No matter which type of protein you choose, by focusing on this essential nutrient, you'll be doing your body good while helping it get the most out of exercise and healthy living. Metabolism Booster It may not be too chilly outside, but inside this chili will at once warm and fuel. Plus, it tastes amazing and is packed with protein. Substitute ground turkey if you’d prefer to skip the beef. A traditional Mexican and southwestern-style chili recipe that can be made quickly and devoured in even less time.
1 15-ounce can red kidney beans 1 heaping tablespoon chili powder (more or less to taste) Sea salt and black pepper • ½ cup corn • ½ cup grated Cheddar cheese • 2 thinly-sliced scallions •1 ½ cups water
Directions:
Ingredients: 1 1/2 tablespoons olive oil 2 carrots, chopped 1 onion, chopped (red onion is a nice addition) 1 sliced bell pepper Ground beef (or turkey), 1/2 pound 2 tablespoons tomato paste 1 15-ounce cans black beans 58 MAY | JUNE 2016
FIT941.COM
Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan over medium-high heat and cook the peppers, onions and carrots for 2 to 3 minutes— don’t overcook. Then add the beef (or turkey) and cook until meat is cooked through. Then, in steps, add the tomato paste and stir, the beans and stir, the chili powder and stir some more. Add the water and salt and pepper, stir, cover and simmer over low-to-medium heat for about 10 minutes. Then add the corn and stir and it’s ready to plate/bowl. Top each plate with the cheese and scallions. ¡Es delicioso!
