Bullying
Pre-Task
Kids are given the mind-map. They are asked to have a look at it and to analyze what the main topic is. They are supposed to discover it! BULLYING
Tasks
Task 1:Teacher explains there are three different types of bullying: PHYSICAL BULLYING, VERBAL BULLYING and RELATIONSHIP BULLYING. She sets three different places in the classroom as the different working centers (physical, verbal, relationship). Teacher gives each child a sentence describing one example of a type of bullying. Kids get together in the centers according to the type of bullying described in the example. Kids in each group plan act out a situation representing the main characteristics of the bullying type they are performing. As each group represents their play, the rest of the groups try to think of an explanation
of the characteristics of what each type of bullying has. After the three groups have performed, the teacher asks sts to open pearltree and to create a tree where the trunks are: PHYSICAL BULLYING, VERBAL BULLYING and RELATIONSHIP BULLYING in each of the sections. Kids brainstorm the definitions they thought of when watching the performances, they add sites/pics and videos they might google. Sentences (Task 1) Site: http://pbskids.org/itsmylife/friends/bullies/ Physical bullying: Hitting, kicking, or pushing someone...or even just threatening to do it Stealing, hiding or ruining someone's things Making someone do things he or she don't want to do Verbal bullying: Name-calling Teasing Insulting Relationship bullying: Refusing to talk to someone Spreading lies or rumors about someone Making someone do things he or she doesn't want to do
Task 2:Teacher gives each group the answer to a question. Kids have to think of the question. They are directed to Quizlet to check their answers in the activity: http://quizlet.com/39325092/flashcards Later, they play scatter at http://quizlet.com/39325092/scatter or http://quizlet.com/39325092/test. Once the groups have solved this, they report the answers and the questions to the other groups, by the creation of a GLOGSTER. Bully. What does the word make you think of? For some people it means a girl at school who always makes fun of others. For others, it's the biggest guy in the neighborhood who's always trying to beat them up or take their things. Sometimes "bully" means a whole group of kids, ganging up on. What can it cause on the victim? Bullying can make you feel depressed, hurt, and alone. It can keep you from enjoying the activities and places that are part of your life. Where and when does it happen? Bullying happens everywhere, whether it's your town or Paris, France. It happens all the time, and it's happened since forever. Why should we suffer from this? Each and every one of us has the right to feel safe in our lives and good about ourselves. How do I know if I’m suffering from bullying? When these are done to someone more than once, and usually over and over again for a long period of time, that's bullying. Which is the reason for one kid would want to bully another? The reason why one kid would want to bully another kid is this: when you make someone feel bad, you gain power over him or her. Power makes people feel like they're better than another person, and then that makes them feel really good about themselves. Power also makes you stand out from the crowd. It's a way to get attention from other kids, and even from adults.
Task 3: Kids are directed to a link in youtube through a RQ (Qdroid). They watch the three videos about bullying. They decide which type of bullying it represents. They decide the type of bullying implied in each video. They can look for images / videos and create a magisto or animoto illustrating each type of bullying. They can also think of the ways out…, on how to prevent these situations to happen. They can use tellagami to explain ”how to prevent” or “what to do in case”...
"The price of silence" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wY7Gvq0P4hc "Words Hurt" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1j6YA03hm4k&feature=BFp&list=WLEB407ED7EC8BAF20&i ndex=1 "Stand for a victim" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nWJut7KQhI4&feature=related Task 4: Kids have a list of “what to do if…” They discuss what they think about the options they were given. They think of other situations and provide new “ways out”. Kids create a list using Listly including what if… and ways out if someone is bullying you. What do you do "in the moment"? Ignore the bully. Pretend you didn't hear him. Don't even look at him. Walk right past him if you can. Don't cry, get angry, or show that you're upset. That's the bully's goal. Don't give her the satisfaction. Even if you're feeling really hurt, don't let it show. You can talk about or write down your reactions later. Respond to the bully evenly and firmly. Example: "No." "That's what you think." If you can, turn a comment into a joke. Example: The bully says, "Stupid outfit!" You say: "Thanks! I'm glad you noticed." Turn and walk away, or run if you have to. Remove yourself from the situation. Go to a place where an adult is present. Remember that you are not the one with the problem. It's the bully who has the problem. If you're being called names or teased, try "The Fog Tank." Imagine that you're inside a huge fish tank filled with white fog. Then, imagine that the insults are swallowed up by the fog before they reach you. Nothing touches you. Practice by thinking of the worst things a bully can say to you, then letting the fog eat them up.
Task 5: Kids watch the following video and they are asked to take notes of “The words to live by”. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X8j4Fxko1Ck Later, they are asked to explore one of the following sites and look for an ACROSTIC Creator. They are supposed to create an acrostic with each of the words they had written, using the site they liked best. E.g.: A is for Abilities, for you are blessed with many C is for Confident, believing in yourself C is for Capable, you can accomplish so much E is for Ethical, an upright person P is for Playful, so fun to be with
T is for Tantalizing, thrilling the senses A is for Artistic, adding beauty to the world N is for Noble, self-sacrificing C is for Calm, so reassuring to be with E is for Exuberant, a bubbly presence http://www.acrosticpoem.org/ http://www.readwritethink.org/files/resources/interactives/acrostic/ http://www.namepoem.org/ Later we discuss we all have beauty inside, no matter what our aspect, religion or language is, and we invite sts to discover the beauty in their names, using the same sites and creating their own ACROSTICS.
After having worked on all these tasks, kids will carry out the final task. Final Task:
We show kids a video. They are Anti-bullying ads: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MhYyAa0VnyY We discuss the message the video wants to convey. We direct the kids to http://www.visualthesaurus.com/app/view and ask them to look up bullying, they can explore the word and mindmap. Later, We brainstorm ideas using https://bubbl.us/ or http://www.ibrainstormapp.com/ (for iphone or ipad) thinking of the messages they would like to convey had they to do an ad or like the one they had watched. Kids create an Anti-bullying campaign by making a video (in groups) They can use ANIMOTO or MAGISTO. They can go back to any of the materials they had been working on, and they can include whatever they feel like in the video. The video will be uploaded (YOU TUBE) and families will receive the link so as to watch it together. Kids will share this campaign with the rest of the school.
