Skelton and Brotton Parish Council fund new surface for Skelton Green wheelie area

L

ocal Resident Eileen Goodenough, former Secretary of Skelton Villages Environment Improvement Group, now disbanded, approached the Parish Councillor for Skelton Green, Lesley Kettlewell last year, to see if Skelton and Brotton Parish Council

would consider funding the resurfacing of the BMX Track in Skelton Green.

The proposal was put to the Parish Council, with Members voting unanimously to support the project. They recognised that the BMX Track is well used, not only by BMX riders, but also by

young children, who like to run around the track.

The Parish Council also felt that now, more than ever, outdoor activities should be encouraged and enabled wherever possible.

The weather held up the project’s original start date of February 2021, but the Parish Council is pleased to announce that the work has now

been completed.

This is not the first time the Parish Council has supported the BMX Track. They contributed to the original project, providing match funding, have provided grant funding to replace surface dust, and also contributed to resurfacing the track in 2016.

Welcome to Coastal View & Moor News Issue 119

A

s we write this from May 17th life will be getting back to the ‘new normal’ with further restrictions being eased.

In England these will include allowing people to meet indoors, thanks to favourable data on infections. This means we will be able to meet up indoors for the first time in months, in groups of up to six people or two full households together.

Pubs, cafes and restaurants will be able to allow customers indoors, also for the first time in months and subject to certain rules. Other indoor entertainment, hospitality and sports venues will also be able to resume activity.

And this morning we also heard that not only will you be able to meet up with friends and family indoors but you will be allowed to hu them too.

These are very encouraging signs as it proves we are doing some things right. Most people have obeyed the rules which has stopped the spread of this horrid disease but many people in the area have now had either one or two vaccines.

Almost every day Redcar & Cleveland Council Leader Mary Lanigan posts on Facebook the local Covid figures for the area and they are constantly low, in fact the lowest in the whole of the Tees Valley.

The libraries have now been able to re-open albeit with some restrictions and you can find more details on page 5. As they and some other of our businesses have also been allowed to

re-open we can now leave the paper is some of the outlets, like before and you can find a list on this page.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all outlets who allow us to leave the paper with them meaning more of our readers will again be able to read Coastal View.

We would also like to welcome back some of our advertisers who have not been allowed to open for long periods of time back into the paper. As you all probably know it is the advertising that pays for the costs incurred eg printing and distribution etc so for this issue we have not only been able to increase the number of papers but also the number of pages.

We thank all the advertisers who have supported us throughout this last 14 or so months, and thanks also to our advertisers who have returned because they have now reopened. Coastal View would not be possible without you so THANK YOU all.

As we have mentioned before, we can only include editorial articles that are sent to us. This issue we had a distinct lack of it but hopefully now with more and more facilities re-opening we will look forward to receiving your stories.

Having said that our sports writers never let us down and in this paper we have five pages of sport and four pages of events plus many of our regular contributors.

Keep thos stories coming in and we look forward to hearing from you over the coming months.

The weather continues to be very changeable and it’s stew weather on one day and salad day the next. We are sure that in the months to come we will have some lovely sunny days to look forward to and we can get out to enjoy them.

Try to support your local businesses wherever possible as they’ve been having a real tough time of it and together we can all get through this.

We continue to thank all our friends who have been good to us and their individual kindness has kept us sane.

Steve and I have now had our second covid vaccine and we would like to thank Brotton Surgery who made this possible. The staff there are very kind and understanding even though they had to stick needles in our arms!

If you get the call for your vaccine, please go and get it. You are not just protecting yourself but all others around you too.

The summerhouse is complete, thanks to Russ at RSC Property Services and Ruby is still a naughty girl who is growing far too fast.

On a sad note we lost someone recently who was a very talented, funny, kind and all round decent human being. Dee (Purple) Hindmarsh who some of you may remember from her time at Palace FM sadly passed away in April. May she rest in peace.

Tees Valley Mayor gets back to job of Teesworks development after re-election

O

n 6th of May 2021 residents of Darlington, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Redcar and Cleveland and Stockton-on-Tees re-elected Ben Houchen (Conservative) as the Tees Valley Mayor.

The Mayor chairs the Combined Authority and works alongside the five Tees Valley Councils to improve the economy of the area, bring in new investment and create jobs. He has responsibility over transport, homes & communities, culture & tourism, skills & education, business growth & investment and devolution.

Mayor Ben Houchen wasted no time in getting back to the job following his re-election as Tees Valley Mayor, driving forward the regeneration of the Teesworks site.

The Mayor was joined by representatives from Volvo and local firm Hall Construction to welcome a new £1million, 95-tonne excavator – one of only three in the country and the first in the North – bought by Hall from Volvo to speed up land preparation works.

The monster digger will be used alongside 75, 48, 25, and 5-tonne diggers to help develop land at South Bank, where GE Renewable Energy’s state-of-the-art wind turbine blade factory will be built. Up to ten people will join the 40-strong team, working six days a week to move more than 1.5million cubic metres of earth by the end of the year.

GE Renewable Energy’s 60,000sq ft facility

will create 2,000 jobs during construction, with 750 more when complete and 1,500 in the supply chain as it manufactures blades for Dogger Bank wind farm just 80 miles off the coast. The first blade is expected to roll off the production line in 2023.

The manufacturing centre will sit alongside a new port and heavy lift quay also being created at Teesworks, making it the UK’s premier location for offshore wind.

Mayor Houchen, who was re-elected with a 73% share of the votes, said: “There’s no time to waste on the mammoth task of getting this land ready for the incredible opportunity that GE Renewable Energy’s new facility provides.

“We struck the deal just a couple of months ago, bringing them to the region ahead of another site in France as a direct result of securing the UK’s biggest Freeport for Teesside. This new, huge digger and getting more boots on the ground to work around the clock are showing how we’re going further faster to get the site into shape as soon as possible.

“Once the site is cleared, we can then get on with creating thousands of good-quality, wellpaid jobs for local people in construction, and then hundreds more when the facility is up and running, another step toward realising our clean energy potential.

“We can’t rest on our laurels. The people of Teesside, Darlington and Hartlepool have voted for delivery and getting the job done and that’s

Robert Hall, Director of Hall Construction, said: “This is a big project which is hugely important to the future of the site. That’s why we’ve brought in this new, top-of-the-range 95tonne excavator on top of the 40 machines we’re already using, and are drafting in more local workers to get the job done properly and efficiently.

“We’ve already cleared around 400,000 cubic metres of earth, but there’s plenty more to get done. We’re happy the Mayor could join us in welcoming the digger to site and see first-hand the progress we’ve been making up to this point.”

When complete, it is expected the South Bank area of Teesworks will house up to three manufacturers to support the development of the next-generation of offshore wind projects, substantially boosting the UK’s offshore wind manufacturing base and creating thousands of local jobs.

Libraries are now open!

L

ibraries have now opened their doors for self-service browsing, with new health and safety measures – including limited numbers, a one way system and sanitisers in place at each of the buildings.

The libraries will have self-service machines (with the exception of Redcar’s Dormanstown and Laburnum libraries) and returned books may be placed in the designated area at the entrance of each library building where they will be quarantined for 72 hours. Unfortunately there will be no provision for public use computer equipment, face-to-face appointments, printing or photocopying facilities during the initial re-

opening period. There will also be no provision for group meetings, events or activities.

BorrowBox - the digital service allowing users to borrow eBooks and eAudiobooks - and a book delivery service for housebound library users continue to remain available.

Library users must wear face-masks unless there’s a medical reason not to and are reminded to bring their library cards. Information posters will be displayed at each location and users be welcomed and given specific guidance for the particular library building they are using.

Recycling target inadequate C

ouncillor Philip Thomson, elected member for Saltburn ward, speaking at the Redcar & Cleveland Resources Scrutiny Committee questioned the target being set by the Council for recycling.

The target in the reports going to Cabinet indicated a 50% recycling target for 2025.

Councillor Thomson felt this was far too low a target to be setting.

It did not reflect the needs of the community of Redcar & Cleveland and was a poor aspiration.

Councillor Thomson reminded members that this figure had already been achieved in 2007/8.

There needed to be a much greater effort made to recycle.

This was a poor aspiration when other authorities were achieving figures above 60% Councillor Thomson further queried discrepancies in a separate report where a figure of 60% had actually been used. This was in the Master Plan. This figure would be amended.

This reflected a breakdown in communication between departments.

Councillor Thomson believes there are some fundamentals missing from

the debate on recycling. Whilst the vast majority of residents are very enthusiastic about the need to recycle, others are not sufficiently motivated to play a full part in this very important aspect of keeping a clean environment and making best use of scarce resources.

Greater awareness needs to be made of what can be done to recycle and more encouragement needs to be given.

Councillor Thomson is supportive of incineration but not as a first choice.

Incineration should only be used after all other channels for waste management have been exhausted.

Anti-social behaviour soaring in Redcar & Cleveland

N

ew analysis reveals 45% of Crime Survey (CSEW) respondents in Redcar And Cleveland said they had experienced anti-social behaviour (ASB) in this area in the past year – that’s a 12% increase in two years.

Nationally the figure is 40% – the highest ever.

This is the equivalent of 19m people across the country experiencing some form of ASB in 2019-20, up by 1m in a year.

Every area in England and Wales has seen an increase in the number of people experiencing ASB over the past five years.

Councillor Carl Quartermain, Leader of the Redcar And Cleveland Labour Group said: "Anti-social behaviour is a huge issue across the borough and is completely unfair on residents here in Redcar And Cleveland and for millions of people across the country. After a decade of Conservative governments we now have experience of ASB increasing by

9% in 5 years, violent crime rising, police numbers slashed, and victims waiting years for scant justice. " Steve Turner, Comservative, newly elected Police and Crime Commissioner, for Cleveland said: "Anti-social behaviour is criminal behaviour. It is a blight on our communities. It ruins lives. And after a disastrous decade of Labour leadership of Cleveland Police, it's on the rise.

"Barry Coppinger made a conscious decision to take officers off our streets. I will get our officers back out into our communities, preventing crime and deterring criminals.

"And when criminal behaviour does occur, I will ensure officers track down and arrest those involved. I will correct the mistakes that Labour made and let our officers do what they do best.

"It's no surprise that Labour would want to blame central government for their failure. What else can they do?"

Dennis Teasdale Commemorative Walk

D

ennis was a well-respected member of the Guisborough Community, having worked for many years for the local Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council and subsequently being elected Parish Councillor and then Borough Councillor for Guisborough and Mayor of the Borough in 2018.

He was also a colleague and close friend for half a century to Geoff Dodsworth and Eric Sharp and in their younger days, they would complete a return walk from Guisborough to Commondale (a relatively strenuous up hill and down dale 11 miles or so) on a regular basis.

The three were planning to hold such a walk in 2020, but Covid intervened and then, sadly, Dennis finally succumbed to the cancer he had

Key workers and those badly affected by pandemic remembered with new woodland bench A former soldier and his fiancé have unveiled a bench in a beauty spot to both provide a quiet space for people who need an escape after the year of Covid-19 in which many people have been locked into stressful situations.

The pair will also add a plaque to the bench at Errington Woods, near Marske, to celebrate key workers who have stepped up during the pandemic Levi Crombie, 33, and Danielle Frankland, 31, of New Marske, explained they run a Facebook support group for people who want a private space to talk about mental health issues. It is largely made up of military and ex-military but anyone who needs to talk is welcome.

However, when the pandemic took hold, they decided they also wanted to do something for both key workers and people who needed an escape to a quiet place to reflect.

They raised funds and won the backing of the council and Community Development Officer, Tracee Hall-Young, who supported them through the process and put them in touch with companies in the borough who have made the bench and will also install the plaque.

Mr Crombie, a father-of-three, originally from Fife, Scotland, who works in the security industry, served 10 years with the Army Air Corps - the combat aviation arm of the Army. His service included eight months in Afghanistan in 2012-13. After leaving the Army due to breaking his leg in three places in 2018, he struggled with mental health problems.

He and Danielle went on to set up a Facebook group, 24se7en, for others who needed a place to talk about their problems which has 2,500 members worldwide.

Mr Crombie, a former Lance Corporal who is in remission from cancer, said: “Three lads in the New Marske and Redcar area committed suicide

within a short time of each other and, although I didn’t know them, I wanted to do something.

Sometimes people need to talk with others who have gone through it, not necessarily family or doctors or anything, and that’s the safe place we have tried to set up on Facebook. On the other hand, sometimes they just need to get away for some peace and quiet on their own, and that’s what the bench and plaque is about.

“We kept reading about people in the front line fighting the pandemic and keeping all our services going who were getting terribly stressed.

I wanted it to be for them too and that’s the idea of the plaque. We’re also going to plant a tree there which will hopefully grow and add to the beauty of the area.”

Danielle added: “We know of people who haven’t seen their loved ones for over a year because of Covid. It’s hard and can affect mental health, which is a subject very close to our hearts.

We just wanted to do a little bit to help and remember all those in our community who did their bit for us all in the pandemic.”

Councillor Steve Kay, Cabinet Member for Health, Housing and Welfare, said: “This is a lovely idea and I’d like to congratulate Levi and Danielle for committing so much time and effort to making this happen and also our officers for their support. The pandemic has caused a lot of stress and it’s important we pay attention to our mental wellbeing. New Next Step Shop opens in Grangetown Community Hub

ocal charity Footprints in the Community has now opened its second Next Step Shop in the Grangetown Community Hub. The doors opened on Monday 19 April, with an official ribbon-cutting by the Mayor of Redcar and Cleveland, Councillor Carole Morgan.

The Next Step Shop project is part of local charity Footprints in the Community, which is dedicated to reducing poverty and isolation in Redcar and the surrounding area.

Previously Next Step Shop members had to travel to Redcar to benefit from the subsidised, low-cost food offered by the project. But now thanks to funding through a Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council Community Grant, this second Next Step Shop will bring this vital service closer to the communities who need it the most.

Next Step Shops are for anyone facing food poverty. They are usually the 'next step' for clients of Redcar Area Foodbank, though anyone who is struggling to afford to feed themselves and their families can be referred to become a member by a network of local agencies.

The new shop in the Grangetown Community Hub will be open on Monday and Thursday mornings and Michael, Jenny and the volunteer team are looking forward to welcoming new members to their bright and well-stocked shop.

The original Next Step Shop will remain open at 10 Queen Street in Redcar on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday mornings, allowing

members to choose the most convenient place for them to shop.

Shop members pay a small contribution of £2.50 towards their shopping and can visit their chosen shop on a weekly basis. For £2.50 they receive 10 items of food, with a retail value of £10-£15. Usually the food will be tins and packets, however sometimes fresh food is also available, such as fruit, vegetables and bread products.

The Next Step Shops can also refer members to other Footprints’ projects who may be able to offer additional support, such as First Steps which provides pre-loved baby and children’s clothing and equipment to families who are struggling.

Next Step Shop Project Manager Michael Kelly said “We are delighted that our second Next Step Shop is now open! We know that for many people who are struggling to pay for necessities, Next Step Shop is a vital service; so it’s really important to be able to extend this support into the Grangetown Community Hub. It’s just one of the ways Footprints in the Community can help people struggling with food poverty in the Redcar area into 2021 and beyond.”

Margrove street works on track

A

fter a year’s delay because of the pandemic, Redcar & Cleveland Council has commenced work on the promised street works at Margrove Park.

Throughout my many years as a councillor, I’ve fought, often against the odds, to improve the streets of our East Cleveland villages, neglected for much of the 20th century by local councils who couldn’t, or wouldn’t, cough up the cash. It’s been a long struggle which could very well continue for some years to come, because, even with the political will, sufficient money is never available to solve the widespread problem at one fell swoop.

There can be little doubt that well-constructed and properly maintained streets, front and back, make our villages more presentable and improve the lives of residents.

At Margrove Park, the council is reconstructing the back streets behind numbers 1-40 and 53-100 (41-52 has already been improved) to a high standard,and then plans to resurface the road across the Green, ● Cllr Steve Kay admires the start of as well as the adjacent parking area. back street works at Margrove Park Everybody I’ve spoken with has praised the standard of the workmanship so far, as well as commenting on the politeness and helpfulness on the workforce. In fact, the whole enterprise is proving to be a great advertisement for Redcar & Cleveland Council.

Once the work at Margrove Park is complete, I’m hoping the team will be doing a similar job on back High Street, Lingdale. If you live on Lingdale High Street and receive a communication from Redcar & Cleveland, please reply in a positive manner as the council would like to know that the proposed scheme has maximum support.

Redcar and Cleveland set to ‘bounce back with nature’ in support of mental health awareness week

week of outdoor activity and support tools will be on offer throughout Redcar and Cleveland next week, as the area ‘bounces back with nature’ in support of mental health awareness week which takes place between the 10 -16 May. Throughout the week, the Council together with its partners, will be promoting mental wellbeing with residents able to book on a range of free outdoor activities, ranging from nature trails to guided cycle rides and art in the park through to caring for garden wildlife and wild herbs for wellbeing.

The theme for mental health awareness week this year is nature which was chosen by the Mental Health Foundation because it is known to be an effective way of tackling mental health problems and protecting our wellbeing.

Councillor Steve Kay, Cabinet Member for Health, Housing and Welfare, said:“We are very lucky in Redcar & Cleveland to have access to such stunning outdoor space – from the fantastic coastline to the North York Moors you don’t have to go too far to connect with nature in our beautiful borough.

“Spending quality time outdoors with nature can help reduce stress, balance your mood and help you feel more positive which is why I try and get out for a walk in the fresh air as much as I can.

“During the coronavirus pandemic and lockdown, nature has played a vital part in supporting mental health and I would encourage as many people as possible to book on the great outdoor activities we have on offer next week.”

Faye Lyth, who suffered from post-natal depression and runs a wellbeing centre in Marske, called ‘The Retreat’ explained: “It was a real shock

to me when my mental health took a nose-dive as I have always been a big advocate of looking after my mental health.

“I had a really stressful pregnancy with my second child which led to me being hospitalised.

“It was mainly thanks to an incredible GP who had suffered with post-natal depression herself and noticed that I was showing symptoms as well.

“At first I was worried about what people would think but there is so much help and support out there - you don’t have to go through it alone.

“We live in such an incredible area especially the coastline and the hills and as a family we find it a massive help getting out in the fresh air.”

Former soldier, Levi Crombie, who has struggled with mental health problems added: “I suffered with my mental health when I was in the military and when I left it was still there.

“With the help of my fiancée, Danielle, I have set up a facebook group, 24se7en, for people who need a place to talk about their problems and we have 2,500 members.

“It has been a tough year for everyone but I would say to anyone suffering with their mental health not to be afraid to ask for help. I bottled it up for years and it did me no good – it is much better to talk.”

u i s b o ro u g h A m a t e u r Swimming Club is registered with Swim England and is run by volunteers.

The club operates from Everyone Active Guisborough Pool located on Howlbeck road, which has a 4 lane 25m pool. The club has approximately 70 active members ranging in age from 8 to 50+.

It was founded around 40 years ago and during that time, hundreds of young people and adults have had the opportunity to improve their swimming and enjoy the fun and friendly atmosphere this local club provides. It is a much loved and popular club in Guisborough, supporting swimmers at all levels, from beginners to national competitors.

As well as the health and fitness benefits, the children can socialise and make friends. Many of the members are resident in Guisborough but many travel from the surrounding towns. The club culture of volunteering extends to the teenage members and many of them regularly turn up and help with the coaching of our younger swimmers. They show a great deal of dedication and commitment, passing on their enthusiasm for swimming and the club, while gaining valuable work experience.

The global COVID-19 pandemic has seen the closure of Guisborough Pool for extended periods throughout 2020 and 2021. The club has missed months of swimming which has impacted on the current and

future membership numbers. The usual cycle of younger swimmers coming through to join the club, from swimming lessons, has been disrupted, as swimming lessons were cancelled due to the pool closures.

Swimmers were able to swim on a reduced basis on occasion when the pool briefly reopened. Despite the fall in member numbers, the club still needs to hire the pool for the same amount of time, to comply with social distancing regulations.

The children must swim in smaller groups, which has reduced the number and duration of sessions available to swimmers.

The pandemic has also restricted the fundraising options for the club and the annual sponsored swim and other social and celebration events were unable to take place. The annual club championships gala and our local Moors League were cancelled and our swimmers have not had the opportunity to participate at local and regional galas. Unfortunately, this has coincided with increased costs to implement COVID secure procedures, including PPE and providing safeguarding training for the COVID Liaison Officers.

The club runs on a not-for-profit basis and sets fees to cover costs to remain affordable to families. As such the drop in numbers has had a devastating financial impact. Whilst a very successful crowdfunding initiative, supported by local business did help, the future of the club hangs in the balance.

The much loved club hope to continue to provide an opportunity for all swimmers to not only reach

their highest potential doing a sport they enjoy but also help them to grow in character whist working as part of such a friendly and enthusiastic team.

ll clubs affiliated to Bowls England have been asked to take part in their Bowls Big Weekend which takes place on May Bank Holiday from Friday 28th to Monday 31st.

Bowls will be one of the sports taking part in the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in 2022 and they see this weekend as a way to promote and publicise the sport prior to the Games.

Among the local clubs taking part are Mulgrave Bowling Club at Lythe, near Whitby and Borough Park, Redcar.

Mulgrave are organising their event on Sunday 30th from 1pm - 5pm. This is open to all age groups and gender whether a newcomer to the game of bowls or someone who has tried bowls in the past.

Old School Tearoom and Village Hub

Hated airport tax to be abolished from June 2021 T

he village of Hinderwell is celebrating being awarded Lottery Funding to support the opening of their Village Tearoom and Community Hub. Located in the historic ‘Old School’, an attractive sandstone building at the northern end of the Village’s High Street, the Tearoom is to be manned mainly by village volunteers and run by the experienced manager Mrs Sue Howell. The Community Hub will be focussed in the ‘Schoolroom’ part of the building and run by village volunteers.

Since the Covid pandemic started in March 2020, there had been few opportunities to meet up with neighbours and family in this small rural community. The neighbouring villages of Port Mulgrave, Runswick Bay and Staithes have all found that with everywhere closed, many folk have not had a chance to share their stories, good or bad and fearing that mental wellbeing was not good – the Committee decided that it was time to act.

With a £9,386 grant from the National Lottery’s Community Fund and £1,000 from

North Yorkshire County Council’s Stronger Communities, the Committee could totally refurbish the interior and exterior of the building and make it a welcoming place for everyone to visit. The two grants have been used for re-decorating the building, purchasing outdoor furniture, kitchen equipment and so much more.

The Tearooms opened in April with outdoor facilities only and in May will open fully utilising the inside space within the building and open daily 10am- 4pm. Local produce and crafts are on display and for sale.

Already the feedback from customers is very positive – great food and a great opportunity to mix once more.

In the Community Hub there will be the regular classes that were previously held in the building, ie Art class, yoga, mothers & toddlers, Women’s Institute, singers and band practice etc. New activities are planned but the chance to have a good cup of coffee and delicious sandwiches and cakes has already encouraged the community to return.

Visitors to the area’s caravan’s sites and holiday homes are being made very welcome too.

ees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen has revealed that the hated Passenger Facilitation Fee, a tax levied on every passenger flying out of Teesside Airport, will be abolished from 1st June 2021.

The news comes just 48 hours after Ryanair, Europe’s no. 1 airline, announced they are increasing services from Teesside.

From July this year the low-cost airline will fly from Teesside to Corfu, helping people from across Teesside, Darlington and Hartlepool get great value flights to another top UK holiday destination, without having to travel to Newcastle.

Abolishing the tax on people flying out of their airport was a key part of Mayor Houchen’s 10-year Rescue Plan to transform the fortunes of Teesside Airport.

The £6 tax to fly from the airport was introduced by the airport’s previous owners Peel in 2010.

Within days of the charge being introduced

by Peel, Ryanair announced that they would stop flying to Alicante from Teesside, the airlines only remaining route from the airport at the time.

Mayor Houchen said: “When I bought our airport and saved it from closure, I said I would abolish the hated passenger tax as soon as possible. And today I am pleased to be able to deliver on that promise.

“When the tax was introduced back in 2010 everyone hated it, it drove passengers to

Newcastle Airport and led to airlines leaving Teesside. Exactly what supporters of our airport said would happen.

“We’re able to bin the passenger tax now because Ryanair has given our airport, and our region, another huge vote of confidence by expanding services from Teesside Airport with the new Corfu flight. This means local people from across Teesside, Darlington and Hartlepool can now fly to three of the UK’s top holiday destination, from their local airport, with Europe’s no. 1 airline.

“This support from Ryanair is matched

by Loganair who have shown a long-term commitment to Teesside with an evergrowing list of domestic destinations, ideal for staycations, weekend city breaks or business travel.

“As with my promise to save our airport from closure - if I promise something, I deliver on it.

“This year we are celebrating our airports 80th anniversary rather than commiserating its closure. Labour sold our airport for just £500,000 and did nothing while Peel ran it into the ground. Labour couldn’t be trusted with our airport then and they cannot be trusted with it now.

“We’ve made huge progress with Teesside Airport in an incredibly short period of time, but there’s a huge amount of work still to do, so let’s not go back to square one. Let’s stick with the plan that’s working.”

College students make-up some of Tees Valley’s top new entrepreneurs

ost-lockdown is looking bright – and beautiful – for three makeup-artistry students turned entrepreneurs.

Creative Middlesbrough College students have turned their passion into a profession during the pandemic, and are set to reap the rewards when restrictions around beauty treatments are lifted next week.

Paige Duffy and Olivia Woodier, both 18, and 17-year-old Sydney Berry are among a number of entrepreneurial make-up artistry students who run their own businesses alongside their studies.

Paige, from Park End in Middlesbrough, used lockdown as an opportunity to grow her business by promoting it to thousands of Instagram followers through collaborations with make-up brands, offering one-to-one online tutorials for clients and hosting giveaways.

She said: “I always knew I wanted to run my own business, but the announcement of lockdown last year was worrying.

“I decided not to let Covid effect my ambitions and began focusing my energy on social media.

Filming tutorials and partnering with brands helped grow my confidence, and influence, and I was still

able to offer my services to clients through online tutorials and workshops.

“It’s been a big learning experience but I’m excited about what the future holds.”

Olivia from Hemlington in Middlesbrough started her self-named business after beginning her Level 2 Technical Make up Artistry course at Middlesbrough College.

She said: “The past 12 months have been challenging for us all, and as a young business owner, the prospect of not being able to operate was really daunting.

“Lockdown hit just as I was starting to really grow my business and I had to reassess how I was going to move it forward.

“It’s been difficult but I’ve been very lucky to have the support of my family and friends – my parents even helped build a professional salon in our garage, ready for when restrictions are lifted and I can begin seeing clients again.”

After completing her Level 3 Advanced Technical diploma in Make-up Artistry at Middlesbrough College, Olivia plans to study teaching at university ahead of expanding her business into a makeup training academy – and also dreams of creating her

would like to draw your attention to the fact that Redcar Athletic Football Club has a plan to fence off the Green Lane Playing Field for their exclusive use.

I have a copy of the title deeds to this land.

In short the land in question was transferred to Redcar and Cleveland Council by Lord Zetland in 1955. In 1965 a deed was drawn up between the Borough of Redcar and the National Playing Fields Association. In this deed the council agreed

to use the land as a children's playground and for no other purpose. In 2005 the land was leased to RAFC. It is bad enough that a children's playing field has been taken over by a limited company.

Now this company wants to fence the land in order to prevent children and other members of the public from using it.

I have already started a campaign to oppose the plan which I have posted to local residents We need your support!

The young entrepreneur, who’s won numerous industry awards, set up her own salon from her family home in Hemlington, Middlesbrough, where she was able to build a strong client list in between lockdowns last year – with clients already repeat booking ahead of April 12.

She said: “It has been a tough time for the beauty industry as a whole and we’ve had to adapt the way we operate. I was just starting to work with my own clients from home and had to think of innovative ways to promote my business during lockdown.

“I approached dance schools across the region and have been hosting lessons with their students so they can apply their own makeup ready for competitions.

I’ve also been filming masterclasses which have been popular with my clients.

“If anything, this has just made me want to make my business even more successful and I’ve really proved to myself that anything is possible.”

The Link Charitable Trust extend services into East Cleveland T he Link Charitable Trust (LCT) are pleased to announce that they are extending their service to provide better access to the outlying areas of Redcar & Cleveland such as Brotton, Skelton and Lingdale.

Starting from May 13th the LCT will be taking over the new East Cleveland Arts Centre in Brotton every Thursday to provide some much needed support to the area.

This support is available to adults, children and young people and will include sessions such as Healthy Living, Craft & Chat and Arts & Crafts for kids.

The charity has worked closely with the residents of Redcar and Cleveland, since their inception in 2016, to support adults, children, young people and families to make positive changes to their lives through a range of social and wellbeing activities and services within

Offshore worker helps raise money for "Teddies for Loving Care" Charity

TLC is a charity established,run and funded

by Freemasons Whenever people see children in distress, especially when undergoing medical treatment, they naturally want to do anything within their power to help that child get through their discomfort.

To help children and NHS medical staff in hospitals, TLC provides teddy bears to give to

children in distress attending local hospitals.

Staff at these hospitals have confirmed that these bears aide them tremendously by allowing them to carry out the same procedures with the child and the bear at the same time, to try and divert their attention and ease the child’s anxiety.

The bears are supplied to local hospitals on a regular basis to ensure that all child patients in distress are adequately supported.

This initiative which was established by the Freemasons in 2005, and now with over one million bears having been provided to poorly children in Hospital.

Every child that receives a teddy gets to take it home.

Government agrees to payment towards cost of criminal cyber attack on council T

Redcar and Cleveland shortchanged over Cyber Attack

he government have announced they will be providing £3.68m to cover the cost of the cyber attack in Redcar and Cleveland.

This final offer came prior to the May election to gain kudos with local residents and I hope residents e saw through it.

During purdah our council had no choice but to put out a press release on this announcement which was a feel good story endorsed by the words of the council leader calling it “a long, hard but fair negotiation.” And was “pleased with the government”. But none of us should be pleased by the government and their short changing and inaction to compensate the council in full. No we are not pleased. No we are not satisfied.

The cyber attack left over 135,000 people without online public services. During that time the entire system was inoperable, costing the authority, residents, service users and providers and businesses extra costs and damages. Throughout this extremely difficult time our officers and IT department have been exemplary, doing all they could to keep services flowing and to secure the system from vulnerability with new firewalls and security measures. This was an unprecedented attack, sophisticated, unique and the council was completely exonerated of any blame because the previous system was to the expected standard. This ransomware attack was something completed different.

Shortly after this happened, the government stated that they would effectively pick up the bill. They haven’t. At one time the council were looking at potential costs of upwards of £14m. Having carried out much of the work in house that figure came down to over £10m just last August. The government have now said to Redcar And Cleveland council we can have £4m, take it or leave it.

This does not even cover half the losses. To add insult to injury the government have dragged this out for 14 months. During which time the administration

increased local taxes on our residents by 4%. Had the government provided their paltry offer just two months ago, this would still have been enough to negate the council tax bill imposed on our residents.

Once again the government have shown they are not supporting the local authority to protect the residents from the cost. It is the residents of Redcar And Cleveland who keep picking up the bill.

Below is the Labour motion to council. Unfortunately time ran out before this could be discussed but going forward more questions need to be asked as to why the government backtracked on their original commitment to compensate the costs in full.

“This Council is appalled not to receive full reimbursement of the costs of the cyber-attack in February 2020. This event rendered the entire IT infrastructure inoperable, was completely out of our control (Governance Papers: 24 November 2020.

Mazar Audit. p.49) and estimated to have cost £10.144m (Cabinet Papers: 4 August 2020. 4.2., p.3).

“Furthermore, this council believes that the announcement this week of a £3.68m payment fails to recognise all who have worked so hard for over 14 months to secure the full funding promised and to prevent these costs falling on local council taxpayers.

“However, this council acknowledges there is little more that can be done given the extensive evidence provided by our officers which has been subject to several iterations of due diligence for over a year.

“This Council therefore agrees: • To put on record our extreme dissatisfaction with the settlement in relation to this sophisticated cyberattack; • To note that payment of the full amount may have resulted in our residents not having a 4% increase to their council tax; and • To write to relevant ministers and to our local MPs making clear our frustration at the process, the time it has taken to be resolved and the final outcome.”

he council is to receive £3.68 million from the Government towards the costs of a cyber attack against the authority.

Criminals targeted the council in February last year and officers had to restore and replace computer systems.

The attack also led to other costs to various service areas and loss of revenue.

The authority’s IT system, which had been approved by Government before the attack, has now been further improved with new firewalls and other security measures.

Other councils seeking exceptional financial support have been allowed to borrow more, but, in this case, the Government has agreed to offer grant funding in recognition that this was not a financial planning issue but due to the unique circumstances of a criminal ransomware attack.

Leader of the Council, Councillor Mary Lanigan, explained that the council has had to cover the costs of the cyber-attack from reserves and other funding, and the grant now agreed from Government would be used to contribute to these costs, helping to replenish the authority’s reserves.

She said: “This offer from the Government is unprecedented and is the result of long and hard, but fair, negotiations with our colleagues in central government and our team pushed very hard. We are pleased that the Government recognised the unique circumstances under which we requested support, and awarded grant funding; rightly distinguishing the criminal ransomware

attack suffered by the council from the financial rescue packages of some other local authorities where permission to borrow has been granted.

“These cyber criminals were not just causing damage to a council computer system but were attacking all the people we provide services for, including some of our most vulnerable who we help protect and provide for. We can be proud that none of our most important services were stopped and I would like to pay tribute to all those hard working teams in the council who worked so hard to keep our services going. No money was handed over to these criminals and we continue to hope that they will eventually be brought to justice.”

At the time of the attack, online appointment bookings, planning documents, social care advice and council housing complaints systems were among services knocked offline. Experts from the UK's National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) were drafted in to help restore them.

Improvements made to the council’s cyber resilience have been endorsed by relevant national agencies. This work has included the replacement of the firewalls that provide the barrier between the council network and the external world to provide enhanced monitoring and intelligence of activity and threat, which is more advanced than most other council systems. The network has been assessed and has obtained a safety certificate from Government. The recovery work was also described as “excellent” by the authority’s external auditors.

Investment in laptops helps students stay on course

he Sirius Minerals Foundation, the charitable body supported by Anglo American’s Woodsmith Project being built near Whitby and on Teesside, has launched the second part of its Covid 19 recovery fund, worth a total of £400,000.

Grants of between £500 and £5000 are being made available for small voluntary and community organisations in Scarborough Borough, the North York Moors National Park and Redcar and Cleveland to support more local people to get out and about, reconnect with old friends or make new friends, and rebuild their confidence after the huge impacts of the pandemic on their lives.

“The aim of this grants round is to fund projects and activities that are focussed on helping people in our communities to regain their confidence and restart their lives, as the country begins to come out of lockdown,” said LeahSwain, Chief Executive of the Sirius Minerals Foundation. “So that could mean helping people who have been shielding to go out shopping and visit friends, or running activity classes to reduce social isolation, or helping people who have lost their jobs in the pandemic to gain new skills.”

This round of grants is aimed at small, local organisations who have not previously been supported by the Foundation, and those organisations who may not have experience in applying for grants and may need help to do so. Such groups are encouraged to contact the Foundation to have an informal chat about the grants on offer and the application process.

“We know that many local voluntary and community organisations have had to substantially change the way they carry out their work because of the pandemic, which has impacted them greatly,”said Leah. “We want to ensure they can continue to deliver services in our communities and respond to local need”.

This is the second round of grants for the Foundation’s Covid-19 recovery fund, following the award of £350,000 to 33 local charities in November, and brings the total amount dispensed by the organisation to nearly £1.8m since 2017. Anglo American is funding the Foundation with £1m a year while the mine is under construction. Longer term, it will be funded by percentage of mine revenue, which could amount to more than £5 million pounds per year.

tudents who may have previously struggled to access remote learning from home have been given a helping hand from the Sir William Turner Foundation.

The charity, which supports education in Redcar, has funded 20 new laptops for learners at Redcar and Cleveland College.

“Being able to supply laptops to those students who don’t have access to a computer at home, makes a massive difference,” said the College’s student services manager, Lorraine Preston.

“It enables them to be able to continue with their learning through lockdowns and participate fully in lessons.”

For many families the unprecedented demands of lockdown proved a challenge. College principal Jason Faulkner said: “With parents and siblings also working from home, we have seen students who initially said they had access to a computer at home, finding the whole family needing to use the same equipment.”

Fortunately, the college was able to step up and provide digital kit for those that need it most.

And the injection of a further 20 laptops, will now help support even more students moving forward.

Chairman of the Sir William Turner Foundation, Peter Sotheran MBE, said: “The Foundation has supported education in Redcar for hundreds of years. Each year it invites Redcar and Cleveland College and the secondary schools to apply for funding for projects that will enhance the education of students in the area.”

Partnering with the College for 30 plus years, he explained, the Foundation’s support has taken many forms, all reflective of the times, from buying gardening equipment for students on the foundation skills courses to 12 years of funding health and social care students on their annual visit to an orphanage in Romania.

The most recent investment in essential laptops follows a £23,000 grant to replace the audio-visual system in the college’s lecture theatre. The purchase of high-definition audio visual equipment and lighting controls has transformed the lecture theatre into a modern, fit for purpose space which provides staff, students and external clients with a high quality, userfriendly environment.

Redcar and Cleveland College principal Jason said: “The College and our students are fortunate to have been supported by the Sir William Turner Foundation for many decades, opening up opportunities to young people that they may not otherwise have had.

“The last year has been exceptionally challenging for some young people and these additional lptops, funded by the Foundation, will help us to continue to support their studies.”

North York Moors on fire alert

ess than two weeks ago, parts of the North York Moors were briefly covered in a blanket of snow, aand more recently we have suffered much rainfall over our area.

However, recent dry conditions have forced the National Park Authority to announce a fire alert.

While it may feel as though we have barely emerged from winter, a lack of rainfall has led to heather and bracken ground vegetation becoming extremely dry. With hopefully a period of sunny weather set to come in the future weeks staff from the Authority have been putting up fire risk warning signs at sites across the National Park, advising people how they can help to reduce the risk. The signs will remain in place until the fire risk passes.

The National Park’s Rangers are keen to stress that whilst the area can still be enjoyed safely, extra vigilance is required and fires and barbecues are prohibited.

Senior Ranger, Bernie McLinden, said: “Moorland fires can spread extremely quickly and can cause significant damage to wildlife and habitats. People should not light fires or barbecues and please do not carelessly discard cigarettes, matches or glass bottles. This includes throwing cigarette ends out of car windows.

“It is not unprecedented for fires to occur at this time of year and the majority of moorland fires can be prevented so we would urge people to take extra care when visiting the National Park while the fire risk signs are in place.”

If people see a fire, they should report it quickly to the fire service by dialling 999. The period for controlled heather burning on the North York Moors ended on 15 April, which means any sighted fires will be wildfire.

News from Ringrose Orchard

ince the end of March, under the rules of the coronavirus roadmap, we have been able to welcome back volunteers Maureen Clark, Stephen Richardson and David Gibson.

On the debit side Chris Axford has gone off on a summer of caravanning and will return in September.

Maureen has focused on tidying the rockery, David, alongside general gardening work, has given all our wooden fencing a fresh coat of preservative whilst Stephen has been pruning, tidying borders and planting up new stock.

Our special projects team of Derek Hedges and Roger Pell have built the base for our new ornamental metal seat.

This seat is now in place, looking splendid, and ready for visitors to enjoy a different perspective of the garden and orchard, plus a view along Coniston Road to the coast.

Joyce Basham is growing various seeds, including sweet peas which are about ready for planting whilst Joyce White is bringing on some donated cultivated foxgloves of mixed colours.

Geoff Clark and myself have renewed much of boarding alongside the gravel path with boards obtained from RES(Teeside)Ltd and retaining rods from ISL Boulby.

We have now sown the wildflower meadow, helped by children from Tess Childminder and Little Acorns Day Nursery. Unfortunately the eco warriors from Skelton Junior School were unable to join us because of covid regulations.

It is disappointing to learn from R&CBC that work on developing the waste ground in front of the orchard into a proper car park, and the renovation of the old building in the same area, has been delayed, until at least the autumn, due in part to Northumbria Water having not, so far, undertaken the necessary drainage and sewerage works.

Our thanks go to Skelton Lottery which has donated £100 and to local residents who have brought along seeds, gladioli bulbs, marigolds and a tray of mixed perennials.

Easing of covid restrictions kick starts work on an East Cleveland community facility

s the coronavirus restrictions begin to ease residents in Skelton and the surrounding East Cleveland villages will soon be able to revisit a much-loved community facility and see for themselves the improvement work being carried out.

Work has restarted on a Community Garden called Ringrose Orchard. It was previously called the Community Garden but a poll of locals showed they wanted it to be named in memory of Mrs RingroseWharton, a former owner of Skelton Castle

who was much respected locally. It is thanks to the generosity of the current landowner Mr Anthony Wharton that the area was made into this peaceful haven.

Geoff Clark from the Friends of Skelton Community Orchard( FOSCO) community involvement group said: “It’s been a frustrating time for us all with lockdown, the wet weather and winter, but now volunteers can start work outside to tend to the orchard.

But only in groups of no more than six,” he added.

The farside path, in particular, was badly

in need of repair. “We have been helped by RES Teesside who supplied us with scaffold boards and ICL Boulby who fabricated some former roof bolts to hold everything in place,” said Geoff.”It’s looking really good,” he added.

Campaign group launched in opposition to regionwide incineration plans S

top Incineration in the North-East (SINE) has been formed by residents across the North-East region, horrified to learn that our local authorities intend to sign a multi-billion pound contract to build a huge new incinerator and burn most of our rubbish there for decades.

The venture is jointly sponsored by the local authorities of Hartlepool, Darlington, Stockton-on-Tees, Middlesbrough, Redcar and Cleveland, Durham and Newcastle. It is to be built in Redcar. The total value of the contract is at least £2bn and it is intended to last for up to 40 years.

A petition that SINE has started against the project has over 700 signatures, and rising.

SINE is afraid that our councils are about to lock us into an expensive, polluting project and stop us exploring better ways of recycling, re-use and waste reduction in the years to come – similar contracts often include penalties if the authority does not deliver enough waste to be incinerated.

SINE also urges our councillors to examine the findings of the recent Dispatches investigation on incineration for Channel 4 . This revealed that incineration, as a form of energy generation is second only to coal for carbon dioxide emissions, and that 60% of the waste burnt could have been recycled.

Electricity from coal is already being phased out and the majority of the seven councils have made declarations acknowledging the climate emergency.

SINE believes that such a large incineration facility is bound to be a local pollution risk.

While incineration operators claim these risks have been eliminated by new technology, the formation of various toxins during

incineration isn’t fully understood , and many of our supporters remember the Byker ash scandal in Newcastle.

The new chairperson of the SINE group, Redcar forest-school leader and parent Rowan McLaughlin said “Redcar and Cleveland Council pledged to make the whole borough carbon neutral by 2030 when they passed a climate emergency motion in March 2018. If this new

incineration plant is produced it will make this target virtually impossible to meet as energy from waste is a very high carbon way to produce energy.”

Councillor Bryony Holroyd, of the Green Party on Darlington Borough Council, said: "There's so much more we could do to reduce waste instead of burning it: filter out repairable and reusable items, collect food waste, require deposit return

schemes so reusable packaging is collected to wash and refill, and require producers to phase out items which are not universally collected for recycling. As well as reducing waste and resource use, this would provide jobs and improve skills, and make more affordable second-hand items available - community wealth-building in action.".

ne in three people in the UK has high blood pressure (hypertension), however many people are unaware of it as there are usually no symptoms.

High blood pressure increases your risk of having a heart attack or stroke.

The only way to know if your blood pressure is high is to have it measured.

We explain what blood pressure is and

provide some tips for keeping your blood pressure healthy.

What is high blood pressure?

When blood pressure is measured, two numbers are generated. An ideal blood pressure is below 120/80 millimetres of mercury (mmHg).

The first number is the systolic blood pressure (higher number), which is the force at which blood is being pumped around your body. Ideally, this will be below 120. A systolic blood pressure of 140 or more is regarded as high.

The second number is the diastolic blood pressure (lower number) which is the pressure when your heart is at rest, in between beats. Ideally this will be 80 or lower. A diastolic reading of 90 or above is regarded as high. The lower your blood pressure, the lower your risk of having a heart attack or stroke.

Get your blood pressure checked The only way to know if your blood

pressure is high is to have it checked.

Blood pressure checks are quick and easy, and it could be lifesaving. Adults aged 40 years or over should aim to have their blood pressure checked at

least every five years. You can ask your GP to check your blood pressure, or you may be able to have your blood pressure checked with your local pharmacy. You could also consider

investing in a home blood pressure monitor.

What can I do to maintain a healthy blood pressure?

• Maintain a healthy weight by eating a healthy diet and getting plenty of physical activity.

• Reduce the amount of salt in your diet to no more than 6g a day (1 teaspoon). Look at the amount of salt on food labels and avoid choosing snacks that are high in salt.

• Keep your alcohol consumption within the recommended limits of no more than 14 units a week, spread over three or more days.

• Aim to do 150 minutes of moderate activity (e.g. brisk walking) or 75 minutes of vigorous activity (e.g. running) each week plus some strengthening activities (e.g. lifting weights) at least twice a week.

• Get a good night’s sleep.

His pastimes included Boy Scouts when younger and went from Scout to Patrol leader in three years of

his most enjoyable years. His later years at weekends found him fell walking, rock climbing, back packing in the Lake District, NYM, Swaledale, Yorkshire Dales, Northumberland.

He practises Shaolin Warrior Chi Kung and (Zen) Buddhism and Meditation, hence McQueen’s interest and practice in Shaolin culture. He started to write after his second redundancy in 2009. Writing solid for two years there are six McQueen novels, and A E Taylor is writing children’s stories for all ages up to fifteen.

Home Covid-19 testing kits now available to all - People across borough encouraged to test twice a week

ome testing kits for Covid-19 are now available to everyone in the borough.

Previously, the tests were only available to families with school age children but now everyone is being encouraged to test twice a week.

The home testing, or rapid lateral flow, test kits are for people who do NOT have Covid-19 symptoms (up to one in three carriers of the virus do not display symptoms).

• The council’s testing centres also remain open across the borough and have home testing kits available.

Ryanair flights to Corfu to take to skies from Teesside Airport

ees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen has revealed that Ryanair, Europe’s no. 1 airline, will be expanding its services from Teesside International Airport with flights to Corfu taking to the skies in just a few months.

The weekly flight to the popular Greek island will start in July 2021, helping people from across Teesside, Darlington and Hartlepool get great value flights to another top UK holiday destination without having to travel to Newcastle.

The new Ryanair route builds on the 7-year commitment from the airline to operate flights to Alicante and Majorca from Teesside, and is another huge vote of confidence in the airport and local people by Ryanair.

Securing a low-cost operator for Teesside Airport was a key part of the airport’s ten-year turnaround plan, which is now 2-years ahead of schedule.

Over the last six months significant work has been taking place as part of a major redevelopment of the airport, including a complete overhaul of the departure area to create new bars, cafes and restaurants. Security has been upgraded and equipped with the latest body and bag scanners to speed up security checks and the arrivals hall has been redeveloped in partnership with fivestar hotel Rockliffe Hall. Ensuring passengers flying either out or into Teesside have the best possible experience.

Mayor Houchen said: “This news is another huge vote of confidence in our amazing airport.

It shows the announcement made last November was just the start. Ryanair are committed to Teesside for the long-term because they can see what a remarkable asset out airport is.

“When we secured the return of Ryanair after an absence of 10-years, I said then it was a

seismic day for Teesside Airport, this expansion of flights by Europe’s no. 1 airline goes to show just how confident they are in Teesside and our amazing local people.

“Securing a low-cost airline was always the crucial part in our rescue plan for Teesside Airport, not only have we achieved this ahead of schedule, within months of landing Ryanair

they’re adding more destinations from Teesside.

“Since bringing our airport back into public ownership and saving it from closure, we’ve made huge progress in unleashing its true potential. We’ve secured more airlines to more destinations; we’re investing in a major redevelopment of the terminal building and we’re creating good-quality, well-paid jobs for local people.

“Because of the hard work and dedication of the amazing team at our airport we’re two years ahead of schedule on delivering the10year rescue plan, a plan that is working and transforming our airport into the success every Teessider knows it can be.

“I am sure this new Corfu route will perform very well as local people look ahead to safely returning to the sun.”

eesside Airport has launched a recruitment drive for 15 new retail, food and beverage staff to join its growing team as part of its major terminal redevelopment.

The roles will see successful applicants work across all the new food and drink outlets in the refurbished building; The Landside Café, Transporter Bar and Kitchen, The Goosepool bar and Rockliffe and Middleton Lounges, as well as the airport’s shops.

One role up for grabs is that of Head Chef – with a vitally important job criteria being that they must be able to make a great parmo!

The drive comes at a time when the hospitality sector is beginning to get back on its feet after being hard hit by the coronavirus pandemic, a situation which has seen young people disproportionately impacted.

It also follows the recent announcement that Ryanair is adding Corfu to the airport’s expanded summer season in July, which will see the airport welcome increased passenger numbers. The terminal overhaul, which also includes new check-in and revamped security areas and shops, will be ready to make holidays as relaxing and hassle-free as possible right from the start.

Ellie Potter, 25, from Middlesbrough, recently secured a promotion working as a Passenger Services Co-ordinator in the airport’s terminal building.

She said: “It’s a really exciting time to be joining the airport with all of the work that’s going on to transform it, and the new routes it’s bringing to the area for local people. Working at the airport every day is different and my job is so versatile and interesting – for example when the Radio 1 Big Weekend was in the area, we welcomed Miley Cyrus, Lewis Capaldi and Craig David. And, just yesterday, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge used the airport too!

“I’m delighted about my new role, and I’m looking forward to seeing more passengers through our terminal. I feel like with

Cornwall or a beach holiday in Majorca or Corfu. We’ve seen the return of household names such as Ryanair and TUI who have given Teesside Airport a huge vote of confidence and can see the amazing potential in our local area and local people.

“Our new bars cafes and restaurants are a big part of the transformation of our airport, so the new members of the team are going to play a very important role in making sure local people flying out of Teesside Airport have the best experience possible.

“Like all good Teessiders I’m a huge fan of a good Parmo, though a hot shot isn’t really my cup of tea, so I’m looking forward to tasting and testing the quality of what the new chefs can produce.”

We have been encouraging local young carers and other young people to be more active. The past year has been challenging for all and especially young people. It has impacted on young people’s confidence, emotional well-being and level of activity. With the support of funding though NE Youth, two young people took on a Youth Challenge Award and decided to set up a ‘Step 2 Step’ six-day challenge over the Easter half term.

The aim of the project was to motivate local young people to push themselves to walk as much as possible over a sixday period, encouraging healthy active lifestyles through an element of healthy competition.

Awards were given to all participants who managed a minimum of 30,000 steps over the six days. Young people who didn’t have a fitness tracker were provided with one through the funding.

Each day a photo challenge was set focused on positive thinking and underpinned by the need to take steps to find the 'perfect pic', including a favourite spot, something that makes you happy and something colourful.

At the end of the challenge, participants received a medal, certificate and other surprise treats.

How did the young people do?

Recently we have been promoting positivity with children, young people and their families through our activities and campaigns.

14 young people signed up, many of whom are young carers. Every day they each sent in an email with photos of their daily steps and photo challenge images.

Eileen is the Young Carers Services Coordinator at The Junction and when asked about the success of the challenge she said: ‘It was great to see the steps coming in every day and how well the young people were doing, and to hear how some had joined up to walk together. By the end of the week, all of the young people had clocked up enough steps to achieve an award and the highest clocked up a huge 95,000!’

One young person said that before the fitness challenge she rarely left the house and had no confidence, but since the challenge, she has been at her fittest, has spent more time with her family, and has really built up her confidence.

Here are what some of the participants had to say about the challenge: “Doing the ‘Step 2 Step’ made me feel happy and proud, it also made me feel more myself and gave me a boost to do more.”

“I’ve never walked to so many beautiful places before and it was fun.”

“It helped me learn some independence.”

“The step challenge helped me to be motivated to walk.”

“The most exercise I have done.”

“It gave me something new to talk about.”

POSITIVE MESSAGES CAMPAIGN The Junction Heart recently set up and ran a new social media project which was themed around positive messages and affirmations. The project’s aim was to spread positivity around social media, to encourage young people not to focus on the negative media online, but to focus their attention on brighter things, and create an optimistic and supportive platform.

The Broughton Hall Estate, The White Rose Forest and its partner Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust with Shoe Gate Wood in Nidderdale, as well as William’s Den in North Cave, are all confirmed land allocations for the trees, with further Yorkshire sites to be announced.

Playing an important part in combatting climate change, trees remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and every six trees can help to absorb up to a tonne of carbon over a 50-year lifespan. It is estimated that every 1000 trees planted helps offset more than 160 tonnes of carbon over 50 years.

uisborough Photo Group is at the end of its 2020-2021 season.

All the monthly Competitions entries are now in with the results of our last open competition below, now to find out who are the yearly winners, ready for the presentation night on the13th May, but due to Covid 19, we still cannot meet in the Methodist Church Hall, but we still meet via Zoom meetings at the normal time 7:30 on Thursday evenings. Each Member gets an invite via an E-mail, check your e-mails and trash bins.

The 6th competition which is the last in the season and was an open one, and due 4th March 2021. With the Results on 25th March. The competition was judged by Steven Byard from the Richmond Camera Club.

The Advanced section was won by Steve Gray with Cat Safari, second place Chris Reed with Common Blue Damsel Fly and third place going to Enid Harrison with Where did I hide those Nuts.

There were five Highly commended and six Commended, with very little to choose between all entries, which is going to make it a very close and interesting presentation night and P.D.I. of the year Competition, all round, which took place on the 13th May. The Intermediate section was won by Brian Collett with Splash of Lemon, second Place Geoff Gray with 1st past the Post, and 3rd place going to Brian Collett with Screwfix City Skyline, with

three Highly commended and two Commended.

Again, a very tight competitive year so another very interesting, presentation night and P.D.I. of the year. It’s a pity we cannot meet in the hall for it.

The Bingo Competition which is a fun competition was due on the 18th February with the results on 18th March, was very well supported with 19 members taking part, lasting about one hour and was a most enjoyable and entertaining evening.

The Short set competition was won by 1st Katie Whitham with the Black Path, 2nd Chris Reed with YWP, 3rd Wayne Stephens with A Trip through India The AGM was on15th April,with a few changes to the committee, Ed Evens taking over as Treasurer, Geoff Walker taking over as competition secretary, as Rick is stepping down from the committee, after 35 years of covering all the committee posts, Albert Wood taking over as syllabus secretary, from Bill Heppell, All the minutes can be found on the web.

Returning to the source of inspiration

R

aised in Saltburn and schooled at Sacred Heart, Redcar and Middlesbrough Art College, Rosa-Maria always felt that inspiration lay elsewhere and at the age of just 18 left for the bright lights of London to follow the dream of fashion design.

Even when she had her first catwalk show it still felt that something was missing and so she set about finding her artistic flow.

At this point, life happened and art was put on the back-burner whilst she concentrated on raising her family. The art never left her, the creativity just found other ways to come

out, her home was decorated more often than some people change clothes!

Finally, in the early noughties, RosaMaria found the opportunity to really start creating and set about building her brand by exhibiting her art works up and down the UK and to collectors abroad. She can proudly claim to have works hanging in the Americas, Asia, Europe and Australasia.

And yet, still that search for inspiration continued.

What followed was an incredibly productive six years spent living in Malta and Spain where she discovered her true palette, a unique style blending colours, mediums and subjects. The only thing missing was security and when Covid 19 happened so did the decision to return to the UK and after 6 months of reacclimatising in Bristol was over there was only ever one place Rosa-Maria would gravitate to, Teesside and Redcar.

Contrary to the feeling it would be akin to returning to the scene of the crime, the area proved an inspiration and Rosa-Maria set about combining her experiences with her new found love of the North East to create staggering new works that are already on display in the Clock Gallery in Redcar.

There was no crime, sometimes you need to experience other people, places, cultures to really appreciate what has always been on your doorstep. As Rosa-Maria says when she offers one of her favourite quotes ‘it is the possibility of having a dream come true that makes life interesting’ and with each work she creates, another dream comes true.

Artists commissioned to create keepsakes across North Yorkshire

orth Yorkshire arts charity Rural Arts has announced the 11 artists commissioned as part of Keepsake, its new project to reduce loneliness and isolation caused by the Coronavirus pandemic.

These 11 commissions will provide treasurable cultural experiences to over 700 people, increasing their wellbeing and connecting them to a sense of community.

Seven participatory arts experiences – all of which can be completed from the safety and comfort of home – have been created, one for each North Yorkshire district. In the east of the county, activities include Chris Mawson’s poetry ‘daisy-chain’ (Ryedale), Jade Blood’s postcard printmaking (Hambleton), Adrian Riley’s exploration of nature sounds, and a community quilt project with Tadcrafters (Selby).

To the west, Rachel Goldsmith introduces Richmondshire residents to terrazzo, whilst in Harrogate Ryan Walsh and Isobel Cameron showcase cyanotype, ‘nature’s photography’ and Sarah Louise Jay leads a ‘laser cut stained glass’ community exhibition in Craven.

Reaching audiences across North Yorkshire – and around the world – will be four performing arts commissions. Kerrie Marsh’s audio experience ‘Ask for Sophie’ is accessed by phoneline and explores the experience of being LGBTQ+ in rural areas. Tom Wentworth’s ‘Pen Pals’, available online, celebrates friendship, the countryside and reconnecting with yourself. Audiences can journey beyond their imagination with Ella Mesma, who has developed a virtual dance experience that combines live performance with alternate reality. And all the way from Canada comes a new song inspired by people of North Yorkshire and their resilient spirit from Nova Scotian sisters Cassie & Maggie.

“Sometimes we just need somebody in our lives who we know we can talk to, who’ll listen to us and understand what we’re going through”, says Kerrie March, whose commission is the first to launch on Monday 3rd May. “Hopefully Ask for Sophie speaks to audiences across North Yorkshire – LGBTQ+ and otherwise – and reminds us all we’re not alone” “We’re so pleased to be bringing creativity to the heart of communities across North Yorkshire, and particularly to people who’ve faced additional challenges due to the pandemic”, shares Rural Arts’ Director and CEO Max May. “As well as supporting local communities and developing individual creativity, the commissions invest in communitybased, unfunded and underrepresented artists. Artists from these groups face heightened difficulties securing work during the pandemic.”

s theatre’s and concert venues look forward to the next round of restrictions easing one of the most historic theatres in our region is opening its doors once more.

On 17th May with their ‘Love Bites’ celebration of local artists poets, performers, singers, dancers, digital artists – who have been commissioned to write love letters celebrating the return to live performances following the easing of government restrictions.

Former Look North presenter Harry Gration will host the evening which has a “Pay What You Feel” ticket policy.

The Love Season continues with ‘Romeo And Juliet’ from the Handlebards on 25th and 26th May where a brand new (comic) version of the classic tale will be performed by three actors.

If you have never seen the Handlebards then you have missed a treat. This group specialise in outdoor theatre, carrying all their set and costumes on the back of their bikes. They describe themselves as “performing extremely energetic, charmingly chaotic and environmentally sustainable Shakespeare plays across the UK” and that’s pretty close to the truth.

New exhibition at Ryedale Folk Museum depicts the ‘incomparable beauty’ of the North 17 May to 11 July 2021

n exhibition of paintings and prints depicting the ‘incomparable beauty’ of the North opens in the art gallery at Ryedale Folk Museum in May. Ian Scott Massie’s Northern Soul represent the artist’s personal journey of 45 years living in the North. It can be seen from Monday 17 May to Sunday 11 July at the Museum at Huttonle-Hole, in the heart of the North York Moors National Park.

The 50 watercolours and screenprints portray northern views as diverse as Bamburgh and Barnsley, and landmarks ranging from Fountains Abbey to the Tees Transporter Bridge. The images reach right across the country from Newcastle to Liverpool.

Raised in Buckinghamshire, Massie moved north in the 1970s to study at Durham University.

He now lives in Masham in the Yorkshire Dales with his artist wife, Josie Beszant.

He began working in watercolours ‘to paint quickly’ when his children were small, and cites JMW Turner as an influence.

“The depth of colour, the freedom of the expression and the speed at which a picture could come together captivated me,” he says.

The North, he says is ‘the truth of England, where all things are seen clearly: the incomparable beauty of the landscape, the harsh ugliness left by industry, the great wealth of the aristocracy, the miserable housing of the poor, the civic pride of the mill towns and a people as likely to be mobilised by political oratory as by a comedian with a ukulele’.

"Both the pictures for Northern Soul and the accompanying book take a very long view of the North, reaching back into my personal history and the history of the region. The exhibition also refers to my time working as a music researcher for Beamish Museum (which I loved), from which experience grew an interest in the industrial, social and folk culture of the North which Ryedale Folk Museum reflects so beautifully.”

Northern Soul can be seen at the art gallery at Ryedale Folk Museum from Monday 17 May to Sunday 11 July 2021. The gallery is open daily from 10am to 5pm. Entry to the gallery is free.

With still three weeks to go, the event’s aim is to now achieve £75,000. in vital fund donations, as well as raising awareness, for this incredibly important charity and its life-changing cancer research.

Police thank pubs and licensed premises

leveland Police is thanking the vast majority of licensees and members of the public after only a small number of sporadic incidents since the lifting of coronavirus regulations.

With some pubs reopening on Monday 12th April, Cleveland Police Licensing Unit have conducted a number of patrols alongside local authorities around licensed premises, to ensure that coronavirus guidance is being adhered to for everyone’s safety.

Sergeant Darren Wild, from Cleveland Police Licensing Unit, said: “We know that all pubs are not yet reopened, but of those that we have seen reopening there has been great cooperation from them, ensuring that they’re working within the guidelines, so thank you to them for their efforts in doing their best to adhere to the regulations.

“The majority of customers have also been compliant and we have seen a very small number of incidents reported to us within the reopening period.

“We obviously continue to encourage everyone to abide by the guidelines and we hope that people can begin to enjoy a little more freedom safely and sensibly.”

Cleveland Police will continue to use the four E’s model to engage, explain, encourage and only use enforcement as a last resort.

Georgina shines brightly with Cavell Star Award

Teesside nurse has been honoured in the prestigious Cavell Star Awards.

Georgina McDonald, acting ward manager for ward 36 at The James Cook University Hospital, was nominated by her colleagues for going above and beyond during the coronavirus pandemic.

Georgina, who has worked for South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust for 12 years, has been praised by her colleagues for her positive ‘glass is always full’ and can-do attitude which has helped boost morale.

Support charity opens its doors again to tackle a massive surge in demand

s the relaxation in coronavirus restrictions eases across the area one local charity says it has never stopped throughout the entire lockdown.

Tonia Nixon, the founder of TEES (Together, Engage, Encourage, Support) CIO a charity which mainly operates in the Redcar and Cleveland area said: “Demand for our services has gone through the roof! But lockdown meant we weren’t able to trade and raise the funding to become self-sufficient.

Nevertheless, a skeleton volunteer team worked seven days a week from the first lockdown to date.”

The coronavirus pandemic forced the small charity to extend its services but lockdown restrictions meant it was very difficult to help those in need.

“The relaxation of the rules means so much to us,” said Tonia. “We can reopen the Hub where we sell our wares to the public, and we can run meetings and events in the building,” she added.

One of the early aims of TEES was to support people in period or incontinence poverty, but the charity now provides all manner of services – delivering meals, providing clothing, supporting those with mental health or addiction problems. Bedding, curtains and furniture can also be provided.

Along with the reopening of its doors, a further boost has come with a donation of £1,000 from ICL Boulby. “Funding is always a problem for us so this is very welcome,” said Tonia.

The money will help tacklethe big increase in demand for their support services, as Tonia explained:“There has been a 300% increase in requests for our help and that demand is growing steadily. We find that the main problem is the loss of a personal connection. Most people are really in need of a conversation, someone to listen to and a place to meet,” she said.

Rural Ewe Crime Update

ello and welcome to May’s edition of the rural policing page, brought to you by the force’s rural crime prevention officer Paul Payne.

Well its been another interesting month with COVID restrictions slowly being lifted and life returning to some sort of normal. Lets just hope things continue down this path, and we can enjoy the summer which is just around the corner, but of course in the meantime lets stay safe out there.

I’d like to start this months page highlighting a recent crime trend that is effecting those living and working in the Redcar area.

Shed Breaks & Garden Thefts: Over the past few months we have had numerous shed breaks and garden thefts, with persons being arrested and questioned in connection with these, however unfortunately this is a yearly occurance, and although the crime prevention team do make people aware about this type of crime early in the year, its always good to refresh peoples memories and help deter would-be thieves from stealing the property you have worked hard to pay for, and is the reason why I thought I would put together some simple crime prevention tips that can help reduce the risk of being a victim of crime.

Sheds are often targeted by thieves because they are not designed to store valuable equipment and property - they were originally designed to house potting plants. Their fairly flimsy construction makes them easy to break into via the door, windows, walls or even the roof.

However, many homes have little outside storage space, so the shed inevitably becomes a place for storing items that are not wanted indoors.

We are working hard to prevent criminals from targeting sheds and properties, but you can play your part in making sure it is as difficult as possible for them.

Follow the advice on this page to help secure your shed and garden.

• If you are choosing a new shed, look for one with small windows or no windows at all.

• Fit a strong hasp and padlock to your shed door. Make sure the door is strong enough to resist being kicked or pushed in. Replace standard hinges with strap hinges secured by coach bolts or use security screws on existing hinges.

One of the best ways to keep thieves out is to use nature’s own defence mechanisms to stop intruders.

A barrier of prickly hedge may be all the protection you need around your property.

Although they will take some time to grow, the end result justifies the effort. They should deter even the most determined burglar.

Hedges and shrubs in the front garden should be kept to a height of no more than three feet in order to avoid giving a burglar a screen behind which he can conceal himself.

o East Cleveland has again hit the headlines, and yet again it is via evidence that our native patch was far more central to the development of our lives in these isles than most other areas.

This time it is salt, one of the hidden staffs of life.

Archaeologist Stephen Sherlock, an independent local scholar who has frequently featured here before, has found evidence of Neolithic people extracting salt from seawater 5,800 years ago at Street House, Loftus, making it the oldest salt production facility ever discovered in Britain.

Stephen and his team have been working at the site, which is located near the town of Loftus, in the Yorkshire Moors, for many years, and some time back they hit the headlines with the unearthing and interpretation of the grave of the “Saxon Princess” found there, and it was Stephen who made the connection between salt production and artifacts unearthed in trenches.

In addition to charcoal deposits, there was a hazelnut shell and pottery, all of which was dated back approximately 5,800 years.

Salt was an important commodity for people in the Neolithic stone age - it was used to

preserve food and hides, both a necessity for making it through long, cold winters. During that time, salt was either mined or extracted from seawater. In this instance, it appears the seawater was captured in jugs from the North Sea, approximately then 2.5 miles away. It would have been distilled onshore before transport to the salt-producing facility near what is now Loftus.

Stephen Sherlock suggests the briny water was dumped into a pit called a ‘Saltern’ where it was stored for use. To retrieve the salt, workers would collect a quantity of the brine using pots and heat it over a fire for up to seven hours.

Doing so removed most of the remaining water.

The pots full of salt cake would then be set aside to cool or would be taken to other places. When people wanted to use the salt, they simply broke the pots.

Similar salt extracting facilities from the Neolithic period have been found in several places around Europe but this was the first for Britain. It is also the oldest-known saltproducing facility in Britain - many thousands of years older than any previously found.

And because of where the site was situated, Sherlock suggests that the knowledge was likely brought by migrants from the mainland - the

earliest example of what today we call ‘inward investment’.

Sherlock found three hearths that were used to heat the brine in a single trench - nearby, he and others found hundreds of pottery shards. Testing showed the pottery was made in France, which is likely where the migrants came from.

Street House has been under the archaeologists’ magnifying glass for many years now. Their work began in 2004, with investigations of a developed Iron Age settlement dating to 200 BC and an Anglo-Saxon cemetery dating to around AD 630–670.

The Iron Age settlement yielded significant evidence for salt production, continuing into the Roman period. The Iron Age saltern was probably regularly topped up by seawater collected at Skinningrove and then transferred up to a site well above tidal level. The distance between the beach and the Street House saltern may suggest that seawater was concentrated by evaporation into a brine solution in the shelter of the valley at Skinningrove, before being transported up to the site, where lengthy heating conditions could be controlled.

The most recent investigations at Street House have revealed further evidence for Neolithic settlement. This includes a ring-ditch dated to the Early Neolithic by radiocarbon tests on a hazelnut shell from the lower fill of the ditch's northern segment and a double ring of postholes and an entrance porch marked by four further postholes.

Given the passage of centuries, it was lucky for Stephen’s team that the site was located in a pasture field, the only known disturbance of which since the Romano-British period has been the insertion of a nineteenth-century field drain.

Excavation of this feature revealed three distinct phases of Early Neolithic activity. Phase 3 comprised a house defined by an arc of five postholes at the northern end, further postholes to the south and a suite of associated domestic artefacts. The finds unearthed there included ceramic sherds primarily from bowls, lithics including leaf-shaped arrowheads, blades, cores and flakes, a saddle quern and pounder, and other stone items.

The site of the Saltern was defined on the west, north and east sides by burnt layers containing oak, and charcoal derived from burnt timbers.

Both of these layers yielded numerous flint tools and ceramic sherds. Within the chamber were three areas of intense burning, which Stephen interpreted to be the locations of hearths.

Around the edge of each of these hearths was a concentration of fire-reddened, wedge-shaped stones and ceramic material, which he suggested were props or supports for the oven furniture and the ceramic vessels containing the brine.

To the south-east of the saltern was a pit with a clay lining, which may have been a tank for storing the concentrated brine solution before it was heated over the hearth.

Over 750 sherds of Neolithic pottery and more than 40 fragments of baked ceramic material, weighing approximately 4kg in total, were recovered from the site. The vessel walls varied between 6 and 12mm in thickness and were coarsely tempered with medium to large white quartz and quartz grits, and organic matter.

The interior surfaces of the vessel sherds are consistently heavily abraded, and, where surviving, exterior surfaces exhibit fingertip and fingernail impressions of the original potters.

was a salt making complex was made after other possible uses were examined and ruled out.

First, could the feature be a “crematorium”, similar to sites excavated on the Yorkshire Wolds in the nineteenth century? This interpretation was dismissed because no human bone has been identified in any of the samples of burnt material collected. If bone had been present in the phase-2 feature, it should have survived, given that human bone was found at the cairn and mortuary structure just 250m to the north-west of the site. A second possible interpretation was for a pottery kiln, based upon the shape of the feature, evidence for intense burning and the hundreds of ceramic sherds found within the feature. But such sites, over periods of possibly hundreds of years show accumulations of incomplete ‘wasted’ pottery - and this was not present.

This led to the conclusion that this site was a saltmaking centre. There were a lot of parallels with similar sites from much later in the historical record.

Examples of supports and structural material similar to that found at Street House - albeit ceramic rather than stone - have been found at Iron Age sites in Lincolnshire and elsewhere in Eastern Europe in both Poland and the Balkans.

A site at Poiana Slatinei in Romania, with its associated pottery and a nearby salt well, has yielded a broad range of Neolithic dates, and is arguably the

earliest salt-production site in the world, dating to 6050–5500 BC. Compared to that site, the dates for salt-working at Street House are much later, indicating the slow spread of technology from the centre of the continent to the periphery out in East Cleveland. Stephen argues that the technology and possibly the saltmakers themselves migrated here over the years from the continent, possibly from Northern France, between 4000 and 3800 BC. These people would have founded an early centre of trade and exchange; A wider exchange network has been considered - one which may have included objects in addition to stone tools and salt - that could be associated with status, such as stone axes from outside the area (e.g. a polished axe from Borrowdale, Cumbria, excavated from the façade trench of the Early Neolithic cairn).

The high position of the site and the evidence of the workings - the smoke by day, and the flames at night, would have been a visual symbol of power and importance.

As salt is an essential staple, the control of quantity and supply was crucial, and status was probably also reflected through ownership of commodities as a symbol of wealth. Certainly, at other Neolithic salt-working centres in Europe, the communities regulating the production and distribution of salt benefited from great wealth.

In the Early Neolithic, salt was a rare commodity, probably reserved for special occasions or for selected individuals, but the even waste product formed by the debris from this process could have been given to animals as salt licks and thus helped local animal husbandry of dairy animals.

Stephen concluded in the definitive study: “The implications of saltworking in Neolithic Britain are wide ranging, and the evidence from Street House will initiate debate over the mechanisms of the production, distribution and consumption of salt, its potential utilisation in craft-working, as well as its importance in ritual and status.”

And in a sense, the traditions of Street House continue to this day. From the summit of the ridge, looking South East, any modern observer will see the chimneys and winding house towers of Boulby Mine, a mine producing Potash, but also rock salt. It must be in the local blood.

ike the rest of the world the Slimming World groups and their members in our area have faced big challenges throughout the last year.

Most of us have made it through and are looking forward to better times ahead, helping and supporting members to achieve their weight loss dreams.

Sadly some of our consultants have left and it means the groups that they were running before lockdown are not able to reopen. This is a horrible and unprecedented situation.

Our biggest worry is that members of the groups that can’t reopen may be feeling let down by Slimming World. They may be worried that in order to lose weight they’ll have to pay to start again at a different group, or that they’ve lost the money they paid for block booking groups in advance (countdowns).

We’d like give our assurance to all of the members who’ve been affected by these regrettable closures of groups that this is not the situation.

Slimming World have always tried to treat members and consultants as fairly as possible. With this in mind we want to let everyone know that we have groups running in Guisborough, Saltburn and Redcar who are ready to offer a warm and friendly welcome.

Slimming World said: “We can transfer their membership from the closed group to a different one, continue their countdown courses and keep their weight loss history for these members.”

“We’ve never faced anything like this in our 52 year history and it’s heart breaking to think of how it’s affecting members,” says Stevie Muscroft who runs groups in Saltburn. “We have to do everything we can to support our members through this and we will.”

A local manager Nicky Collings adds: “Losing so many colleagues has had such a huge impact on our area and we’re looking to start to build up our team of consultants again.

“It’ll mean that we can reopen some of the closed groups and open new ones in the future which will offer even more support for slimmers. “Anyone interested in finding out about a new career by becoming a Slimming World consultant, please contact me or your own consultant.”

Better days are definitely coming and we want to make sure that all the current members of our local groups feel the benefit as well as anyone who wants to start their weight loss journey with support from us.

fair majority of the e-mails I get ask why I can`t write reviews on British resorts; in view of the present travel restrictions this might be the ideal time to start.

So – I`ll start with an old favourite of ours – Llandudno pronounced “Clandudno” .

This lovely little resort is so easy to get to from the northeast. It’s on the northern coast of Wales and less than 200 miles by road.

There`s lots to see and do there. Take a trip on the old tramway up the Great Orme or you could go by cable car or even walk.

Unfortunately the scenic road skirting the Orme was closed only yesterday at the time of writing due to a rock fall.

At the top of the Orme is a country park with an excellent visitor centre. With models, interactive displays and exciting films the whole family will enjoy finding out more about the diverse wildlife and history of the Great Orme. Watch the sea bird colonies via a live video-link, test your knowledge on the digital interactivities and spot rock pool creatures in

the aquarium.

Further down the Orme are the not-to- bemissed copper mines. These are the oldest copper mines in the world. You can take a self guided tour of the five miles of tunnels but make sure you`re not overweight or claustrophobic as some of the passageways are very narrow. When we were there someone actually got stuck. We never did find out how the rescue team managed to get them out (I hope they didn`t have to go on a diet!).

Back to the bottom and there are lots of walks around the tiered gardens, the pier and of course the promenade.

If you`d like to explore further afield, consider the lovely Swallow Falls, The Blaenau Ffestiniog slate mines, a trip over to Anglesey, Carnaevon, or even Mount Snowdon which is only about an hour away.

With so much to see and do, why travel further?

hings are slowly opening up and the ladies of Saltburn WI are making the most of the lifting of some restrictions.

Both our walking groups, the levellers (all the flat) and the strollers (a little more strenuous) are out and about again in groups of six, stopping for an outside coffee on route.

We have also started to host coffee afternoons in our gardens for groups of six. It is lovely to see friends face to face again.

We are still unable to hold our monthly meetings face to face but are embracing the opportunity offered by zoom to have speakers

who in normal times may not have been able to come to Saltburn.

Our April speaker Natasha Anson gave us a night at the museum telling us about the exciting new developments at Beamish as they extend to open a 1950’s area.

We were able to open the meeting to other WI’s across the country and had 100 ladies attending.

eople often ask me at markets – which I can attend again – yay! - why I started Naturally Smart Skincare, and I suppose it goes back a long, long time.

I’ve always been a skincare junkie – I think I got that from my mum! She was always very careful what she put on her skin, and I remember her always encouraging me to look after mine. “Don’t pull the skin around your eyes! You’ll regret it in later years!”

“Make sure you wash soap off your face properly or you’ll get blackheads!”

Natural skincare was difficult to get in the 60s and 70s, but my mum was always ahead of the times, making sure she had “healthy” things - I remember her sprinkling wheat germ on her food when it was unheard of, and she had PLJ mixed with water every morning because it was good for her (I don’t know if that’s still available but it was pure lemon juice and she swore by it).

She was a member of a mail order beauty and make-up club when I was in my teens – I nearly wrote online, but that was, of course, many years before the internet had been dreamt up! I used her products then joined the club myself when I went away to college, as I was already addicted. There followed many more mail order clubs over the years, and I revelled in trying everything.

Fast forward to the year 2000, when I was off work

long-term after an accident, and needed to try new things to keep myself busy – and I bought a book on soap-making. Well – I was hooked from the word go! I ended up with hundreds of bars, as I wanted to try every recipe – and I decided I would try and sell some. I did this for a while, then discovered there was a whole lot of legislation I hadn’t been aware of – so I stopped making and selling, and just used the soap I had left, as it seemed like too much expense to do it legally. But I always hankered after doing it again…..

Several years later, after receiving early retirement, I needed to do something to keep my brain busy and ended up on a course learning how to make natural skincare, which was an eye opener. This time I decided I would invest in the assessments necessary to be able to sell the products legally, as I was so full of ideas!

I decided to experiment, starting with face creams.

That wasn’t enough! By now I had trained in reflexology so I wanted to make a foot cream to use, then I went onto hand and body creams. The company I use to buy all my ingredients is wonderful; they only buy from ethical sources, none of their ingredients are tested on animals, and they keep well up to date with the latest advances – so I then moved on to making a Self-Tan cream with their natural tanning ingredient (which ended up winning us a national award in 2015,

Here are a few tips to get you and your dog through summer, some things to consider buying and some things to look out for.

When at home if going out close all blinds and curtains this will help keep the house cool When going out for the day, do not leave your dog in the car as this can be dangerous; the outside temperature could be warm but the inside temperature of the car will be hot.

When walking on pavements do a hand check.

Put your hand down for five seconds if it's too hot for your hand it's too hot for paws.

If you've got a dog that likes to rummage in the undergrowth consider flea treatment and tick treatment, also invest in a cheap flea comb and tick remover just in case.

Use coconut oil for cracked pads and hands, it's a natural antiseptic Buy a collapsible water dish or you can buy a water bottle with a dish attached if you're going on long walks so you've already got water for your dog.

Invest in a cool mat; when the dog lays on

the mat there's a gel inside that becomes cool once pressure is put on it. Ideal if you're at a caravan or you're having a picnic and the dog is over heated When out and about be wary of adders they are blue and green in colour and not easily spotted in grass. If your dog is bitten by an adder seek immediate vet treatment.

Green algae on top of water is extremely toxic for dogs. Do not let your dog drink from stagnant water, as again this would require urgent vet treatment, If your dog has been galloping through muddy stagnant water make sure you hose the dog down thoroughly and check for any lesions; if any seek immediate vet treatment just in case it's Alabama rot.

Take your dog for walks in the early morning or late evening when the temperature is much cooler.

No ball throwing orl running with your dog when the weather is warm as it become over heated quickly and struggle to cool down; dogs can die from heat exhaustion.

Ingredients Serves 2 1 pack of peppered smoked mackerel 1 pack of tender stem broccoli 1 red onion finely sliced 1 clove garlic thinly sliced 50 ml olive oil 50 ml balsamic vinegar Blanch broccoli and strain in a large frying pan Add oil and sweat onion Add garlic, stir in, place in fish, cover and turn heat down for 2 minutes.

Lift lid and add broccoli, cover and heat until broccoli hot.

ou’d be forgiven for thinking that the Redcar Bears season is underway with the amount of action that has been going on at the club over the past month.

In the first piece of major news this month the Agilia Bears parted ways with their popular Danish prospect Kasper Andersen. Due to issues with Kasper’s work permit and uncertainty surrounding travelling in and out of the country at the current time Kasper’s work permit was denied. Bears co-promoter Jitendra Duffill had this to say to the Bears website: “I really can’t believe our luck recently. It was a surprise that Kasper has had issues as theoretically he met the criteria required for a Frontier Worker permit.

Recent Government updates to travel regulations have also made it much more difficult to travel into and out of the UK regularly, meaning that Kasper would really have to base himself in the UK to race for us. “Understandably, this is something that Kasper cannot commit to as he also races in Denmark, his home nation. He is a rider that was expecting to, and always has commuted in and out of the UK regularly during the season to make his living as a professional rider. I feel really sorry for Kasper; he has huge potential and fits in really well with the management here, so I’m very sad that we won’t see him lining up for us this year. I hope we are able to see him back at the club again in the near future. It’s such an incredibly frustrating and stressful time for us as we prepare for the new season.”

The second major news of the month was a ray of light for the club. On the 17th April the Bears ran over 70 heats during an action packed day at the Media Prima Arena. The club ran two meetings, a junior and amateur meeting behind closed doors. The afternoon amateur meeting

This was the first time the Bears have tried their hand at live streaming and the event was a huge success. The dual commentary team of “Ranting” Roy Clarke and Belle Vue Colts rider Paul Bowen alongside the events cameraman Martin Hunter received huge praise for their work. The amateur meeting saw some brilliant racing throughout the meeting, especially both semi finals. Incredibly, Bears co-promoter Jade Mudgway on an upright bike no less managed to finish on the podium in third place!

In more news, the Bears captain fantastic Charles Wright and Bears heat leader Michael Palm Toft both took to the Media Prima Arena shale in a behind closed doors practise session ahead of the new season.

“MPT” had this to say when asked about his year off the track: “To be fair my year off has probably not been too much different to most others, I have been doing odd jobs here and there and I have also got into mountain biking.

I have also been spending a lot of time with my family. Ahead of the new season, I have recently got my workshop ready and have got my bikes built for the season.

“For the season ahead I am aiming to be as consistent as possible with Redcar and Peterborough and increase my average in both leagues. Personally, I believe both of my teams can compete for silverware.”.

Charles Wright also had this to say ahead of the 2021 campaign. Charles, who spent a year away from Speedway due to the pandemic said: “It was good to be back on a bike after 14 months without riding. I’ve blown a load of cobwebs off and I felt good. I felt really good on the bike and the fitness work I have been doing has paid off.

I’ve done a lot during the break I’ve had and I feel it has benefited me in some ways outside of speedway.

“I’ve bought my first house and I have been working hard during the break. I’m looking forward to seeing all the lads and hopefully things will start to get back to normal soon. I speak to Jitendra Duffill and we have got good plans behind the scenes. Obviously, it was a shame to lose Kasper due to issues surrounding his work permit but if things work out the fans will be really excited about what’s in store for the club.”

Finally, the Bears have added their sixth rider to the team this year. The Bears have secured the services of James Sarjaent for the 2021 campaign.

James, who was originally slated to ride for the Edinburgh Monarchs in 2021 was quickly snapped up by the Bears following his release from the Monarchs. Bears co-promoter Jitendra Duffill had this to say to the official club website on the new signing, who will begin at reserve: “We were looking for a direct replacement

for Kasper Andersen after we parted ways last Monday and James seemed a pretty obvious choice. He was unlucky to lose his team place at Edinburgh and it would have been a huge shame for him to miss out, as he is a valuable rider to British Speedway; more so now than ever given the challenges we are facing as a sport with Covid and Brexit.”

He continued: “James comes in on a 3.90 average and I know he is a much better rider than that. He has the potential to add significantly to his starting figure and he should thrive at reserve, especially after spending the back end of last season at number two for Edinburgh.

“He gives us a very strong reserve and one with experience. I can remember him guesting for us at Newcastle a few years ago very clearly, where he put in a very impressive performance for us; you can score points anywhere if you can ride that track well as it’s a tough one to master.

Coming to Redcar is a great move for James; we are excited to have him here and he will make a great addition to our side.”

LATE NEWS Jake Allen has become the 7th and final member of the Redcar Agilia Bears side for 2021.

The Bears’ promotion had been on the lookout for a final heat leader since January, after German star Erik Riss had informed them that he was sitting out the British Speedway season.

Promoter Jitendra Duffill explained: “When we heard that Jake was having second thoughts about coming back over to the UK, we jumped at the chance to offer him a team place. We are very fortunate that a rider of his calibre has become available, but we always felt that playing a waiting game was our best option and it has proved to be the correct decision.

“It’s about time we had a little luck after a turbulent winter for the club and it’s both a relief and exciting that our side is now complete.”

New Marske Harriers make a comeback after covid L

ike many other sporting clubs, New Marske Harriers have found the last 14 months very difficult.

Events organised by the club like the regular annual Coast Road 5 Race Series had to be cancelled for 2020 and 2021, together with the Locke Park races and the 2020 Redcar Running Festival. In addition there has been little or no Track & Field, Cross Country or Fell Running action.

So the post covid era, which we are hopefully moving into, will be a period of renewal.

There has already been a brand new Cross Country event held on April 2nd - this was the first licensed cross country event in England for 2021 on a 5km course at Redcar Rugby Club.

The event takes place on roads closed to traffic, taking advantage of the road closures in place for the Redcar Sprint Triathlon held earlier in the day. New Date Due to other events on the local and national calendar being rearranged due to Covid, the Redcar Running Festival has had to move to the new date of 10th October. The start / finish area has had to be relocated due work that will be underway at Majuba Road car park. The new start will be on the Coast Road near Zetland Park with runners finishing inside the park itself. The Half Marathon course will no longer take in the Trunk Road, instead will consist of two laps of the Majuba Road to Bydales School section. This will enable family and friends to shout on their runners on several occasions. The 2km, 5km & 10km courses will be single laps within the half marathon course.

Despite delays caused by staff being furloughed, the club has worked to get new and improved facilities in the borough.

At Marshall Drive Playing Fields, a new toilet unit has been delivered and will soon be connected for the primary benefit of parkrun but it can be made available to other community groups. This has largely been funded by a grant from EDF via Tees Valley Community Foundation.

At Laurence Jackson Sports Village the club has spent £15,000 on upgrading the throwing facilities made possible thanks to a £10,000 grant from the Sirius Foundation. Staithes Athletic had some great news, their sports ground at Staithes has been taken over by the village's sports association. A statement released by the association on Saturday night confirmed the good news: “We are delighted to announce that this evening a deal has been reached with the current owners for us to buy the club.

They did play a friendly encounter with Whitby Fishermen's Society Academy of the Beckett League Second Division however: SFC returned to football with a comfortable 7-1 win over at Caedmon College on Saturday 10th April.

Skipper Charlie Smith blasted a hattrick and there was even a rare goal for player-boss Ed Turner as Sleights returned to action with a friendly win over Whitby Fishermens Academy.

Man of the match midfielder Smith was joined on the scoresheet by Turner, winger Will Cork-Dove and

fellow wide player Taylor Humble.

e have been very busy over the lockdown working on the main pitch getting it ready for our Northern League bid and improving the outside appearance with volunteers painting signs and car park barriers and tidying up the play park.

We have been blessed with a fantastic group of volunteers with Rosey, Sally and Lesley spending many hours laying paving, painting, and shifting soil. Lee providing his muscle and Ross his brains and experience, Paula and Jenny the paint brush Queens, Toddy Senior and Junior spending many man hours putting goals together and making pitches out, Hugh keeping the outside grass cut and Ian doing his bit also. We have had the men’s team and Ladies team helping when called upon, Smukky various jobs, and the Family Batt for helping weed the play park. Also, a big thankyou to every else who have mucked in also and not forgetting the quiet people of the committee who have been beavering away in the background like Rachael applying for grants and Alison sorting our subs online and paying the bills.

a new pitched roof. Due to the prefabricated construction of the main clubhouse, it has been necessary to provide special support for the roof through the development of a steel framework independently supported through newly placed foundations.

We would like to remind our members and visitors to stay safe and keep away from the ongoing building work please.

We have started up our new Cubs sessions to link in with our Huskies and Wildcats groups giving a clear pathway to move up from the Cubs into either our Huskies Saturday morning Club sessions, where we produce our next boys teams and the female only Wildcats, we have formed an u11 girls team coached by Mick and Oli and our latest u8 girls team coached by Andrew and Katie and are in the process of forming 3 new girls teams, the Huskies produced a really good u8 teamcoached by Harrison and Peter and another 2 teamsthis season our u6s coached by Andrew and our u7s coached by Ricky and Craig.

Our Cubs sessions are on a Thursday night 6pm to 6.45 and a Saturday morning 10am to 10.45

both sessions are free, and we encourage the child’s parents to join in with them, so they are at ease in the new surroundings. The Saturday Morning Huskies club is on from 9.30 to 10.30 goalkeeper only session and 10.30 to 11.30 for the main session, its 3 pounds a session or £1.50for players already playing for our club teams. The Wildcats is on a Thursday night 6.30 to 7.30 and only 2 pound a sessionopen to female players only.

We would also like to thank all our Coaches and Managers for their contribution this year and last, especially with the difficult circumstances of Covid, it is much appreciated.

Finally, we must mention the turning right out of our car park, it is not allowed and could cause a fatal accident, so please can our members and visitors adhere to the turn left only policy. We are in consultation with the Highways Agency and the Council Enforcement department to look at ways to stop those continually flouting our request. Turning right against the no right sign is in contravention of Road Traffic Law and attracts a fine and 3 points.

ith the 2020/21 season now officially curtailed, there hasn’t been much on the field Marske United news to report.

The squad have kept fit by playing a couple of recent friendlies and first up, was a trip to Bedford Terrace to play Billingham Town.

Despite taking the lead through Glen Butterworth and playing well for the first 30 minutes, a lack of game time told (Billingham Town had played in the Durham Cup the week before) and the home side deservedly won the game 2-1, though there was more than an element of doubt about the award of the penalty that won Town the game.

Next up, was a trip to Norton to play Billingham Synthonia. Despite only having

13 players to chose from, due to work commitments, Marske eased to a 4-0 win with goals from Adam Boyes, Louis Johnson, with the pick of the goals, Kev Burgess and Billy Clark.

Preparations are already under way for the 2021/22 season and there was good news from Mount Pleasant at the end of April with both Jack Blackford and Burgess signing two year contracts to remain at the club.

Blackford, a former Hartlepool United and Shildon player, will be looking to continue his form from the shortened 2020/21 season into the new season, while the re-signing of Burgess is a signal of the intent of manager Carl Jarrett to have a real go at promotion next season, after the disappointment of two consecutive season that weren’t completed.

Preparations for pre-season matches have commenced and the club hope to be in a position to announce some exciting home games in the coming weeks. Be sure to check our website and social media for these announcements. They will also be confirmed in a future edition of Coastal View.

The 2021/22 Norther Premier League will take a different shape with their being three divisions feeding into the Northern Premier League Premier Division, rather than the current two. This will mean that Marske’s division is more closely concentrated from a geographical perspective and old Northern League rivals Stockton Town, Shildon and Hebburn Town will be joining the new division, which will mean less travel and hopefully bigger crowds at Mount Pleasant.

They will be cycling from Morecambe to Marske by the Sea between the 29th of May and the 31st May. This challenge is to raise funds for further improvements to Mount Pleasant.

These Supporters hope to raise as much money as they can to undertake ground upgrades and be able to have the work completed ahead of supporters being allowed into Mount Pleasant again. It would be great to have everyone behind this fantastic initiative. People are seeing the improvements all the time even those who are

not regular supporters who have participated in Walking Football or Little Kicks have commented on the improvements.

Walking Football

The Club have recently started Walking Football for all.

This has been greatly received and is helping people to remain active and help with Health and Wellbeing.

These sessions are fun social occasions enabling people to interact and regain social confidence again. These sessions take place EVERY TUESDAY between 11am and 12 Noon at Mount Pleasant (Football Ground) and are £3 per person.

Guisborough Town appoints Chris Wood as General Manager to drive forward club’s community focus

uisborough Town Guisborough Town has made one of its most important ‘signings’ ever – with the appointment of one of its most dedicated and hugely popular volunteers, Chris Wood, as the club’s new General Manager.

Chris is extremely well-known and highly respected at the KGV Stadium for his unstinting commitment in many areas of the club, particularly the development of the Guisborough Town’s thriving junior section.

Although still only 23 years old, Chris has been connected with Guisborough for so long that he is already considered a ‘veteran’ club volunteer!

And Chris’s whole family have been heavily involved in Guisborough Town over many years too and in his own words Chris commented: “I can’t wait to get started on this massively exciting new opportunity for me.”

‘DREAM OPPORTUNITY’ Chris is currently Behaviour Support Lead at Laurence Jackson School, Guisborough, a position he will relinquish to take up his new Guisborough Town career.

His new role will encompass many

aspects of running the football club including day to day operations, overseeing and managing the clubhouse activities and driving forward the club’s plans for outside pitches at the KGV. Chris added: “This is a dream opportunity for me and I’m just itching to get started. There are so many challenges to tackle to ensure this great football club of ours realises its full potential as a genuine community focussed and fully inclusive operation.”

Meanwhile, Guisborough Town are looking for enthusiastic individuals run its Junior Girls and Boys teams ahead of next season, particularly Under-8 and Under-12 Boys and Under-10 Girls.

Experience is preferred but not essential as the club will help fund those wishing to complete their coaching qualifications.

The £2000 grant, part of the Foundation’s Return to Football Fund, is helping the club to restart following the lifting of government restrictions on grassroots football. The grant was made possible thanks to funding from The FA and Sport England through the Football Foundation.

Ross Sibley, the clubs Project Development Officer said: “The Return to Football grant will be used to obtain new equipment and support the introduction of our new grass roots ‘Cubs’ section.

The program is provided free every Saturday morning and aimed at introducing children between the ages of two and five into the game.

“It will also help to cover the cost of adapting to Covid-19 rules as we re-launch the 2021 program and seek to return to some degree of normality.”

Return to Football fund is supporting clubs across the country, helping them to kick-start our national game again locally and try to recover from the effects of COVID-19.

“This is part of our wider ambition to transform our grassroots game and unlock the power of pitches, something we hope to get back to in full force as restrictions are lifted.”

The £2.1M Return to Football Fund is directly targeted at groups of people whose participation has been affected most by COVID-19, offering Clubs up to £2,500 each.

The grant comes as part of an investment of more than £16m that has been made available to help clubs prepare for the restart of grassroots football following the COVID-19 pandemic. In March, the Foundation declared “Game on” and announced three funds to get football’s 12 million grassroots players back on the pitch.

The Football Foundation is the UK’s largest sports charity and exists to improve the experience of playing football for everyone, by championing fair access to quality facilities.

There have been some unfortunate setbacks due to the ongoing affects of Covid-19 and the subsequent shortage and difficulty obtaining some of the building materials that unfortunately delayed the construction process.

However, with the fantastic understanding and long-term support of the fund granting agencies and the pro-active input from Jamie Pollock and his workforce, we are finally able to enter the last stages of this difficult and complicated structural development.

Once the project is completed it will have a massive impact securing the integrity of Redcar Town Football Club’s building well into the future”.
