bwf@bendigo.vic.gov.au Festival program details and writer information:

Such is Life!

Bendigo Writers Festival salutes Joseph Furphy, taught to read by his mother, resident of towns from Kyneton to Shepparton, failed farmer, foundry-worker, neglected author of the posthumous best-seller Such Is Life, which he described as “temper, democratic; bias, offensively Australian”.

We salute, too, the writers, readers and curious onlookers whose temper is democratic, and whose bias may well be Australian, although we hope not too offensive.

Welcome to our Bendigo Writers Festival in this turbulent 2023. We hope you find joy and energy, consolation and pleasure, in the pages of this new edition we’ve called “Such Is Life”.

A bird emerging from its egg. A butterfly breaking out of its cocoon. A baby taking its first breaths, reaching with new-born wonder for the light.

Creative City and Region of Gastronomy

Greater Bendigo embraces the cultural and creative industries as fundamental to future liveability, economy, social cohesion, health and well-being. Located on traditional lands of the Djaara People, Bendigo is recognised by the UNESCO Creative Cities Network as a City and Region of Gastronomy.
