The City of Greater Bendigo is on Dja Dja Wurrung and Taungurung Country. We acknowledge and extend our appreciation for the Dja Dja Wurrung and Taungurung People, the Traditional Owners of the land. We pay our respects to leaders and Elders past, present and emerging for they hold the memories, the traditions, the culture and the hopes of all Dja Dja Wurrung and Taungurung Peoples. We express our gratitude in the sharing of this land, our sorrow for the personal, spiritual and cultural costs of that sharing and our hope that we may walk forward together in harmony and in the spirit of healing.
What I did last week What I did last week started as an online art exhibition, established to encourage art-making during the COVID-19 lockdown. The first gallery was published on 30 March 2020, with a new gallery published each week. As the program developed it became a visual record of the times, reflecting the experiences of the artists and their community. For this reason, and as an acknowledgement of the work of the artists, it was decided to produce two hard copy volumes of the work submitted. Volume 1 covered the first eight weeks (30 March to 18 May) and this volume covers weeks 9 to 16 (25 May to 13 July). In retrospect, the narrative of Volume 1 might be seen as quite straight forward, following a path from the announcement of the State of Emergency through to the easing of restrictions. The public health message was that we should do what we could to flatten the curve and avoid catastrophe. At the beginning of Week 8 of What I did last week, there may have been a feeling we were nearly there: daily case numbers dropped with just 3 new cases on 23 May and 2 new cases on 24 May. In the gallery published at the end of that week there were a number of works depicting plants and birds, as artists were taking the opportunity to go out and celebrate autumn. At the beginning of this volume this sense of being on top of COVID-19 carries through. However, while the new case numbers seemed to stabilise—including the recording of no new cases on 8 June (Week 11)—the anticipated second wave of infections struck quickly and on 20 June (Week 13) restrictions were tightened and then on 30 June (Week 15) lockdowns were imposed on Melbourne Metropolitan areas and the Mitchell Shire. We will leave it to the reader to interpret how this is reflected in the final few galleries in this volume. Included in this volume are 165 artworks by 72 artists. To help build a picture of who was participating in the program a survey was sent to the participating artists. This survey asked questions about how people were experiencing the COVID-19 lockdown, rating their experience on a scale from 0 to 100. These questions were asked at the end of the first 8 weeks (for Volume 1) and again at the end of week 16 (for this volume).
When asked: “How are you feeling—generally?” and “In the past 9 weeks has your experience been better or worse than expected?” the responses were less positive than they were when asked these questions after week 8, with the largest group of responses in the middle “ok”/“about the same” range. The response to “Has making art helped you deal with the last 9 weeks?” remained overall, very positive, with a third of responses in the range 90 to 100 (out of 100). It should be noted that for these three questions there were now more negative responses than for the first 8 weeks. For this edition’s survey a new question was asked: “How valuable has What I did last week (your work and others) been in reflecting your experience of the COVID-19 lockdown?” and the response was very positive; an average response 76, and over a quarter of responses in the range 90 to 100, on a scale where 0 was “not valuable at all” and 100 “very valuable”. Artists were asked to share their thoughts about how participating in What I did last week had changed how they saw the role of art in the community. The responses (some of which feature elsewhere in this volume) spoke of the enjoyment of being part of a connected community of artists. While people appreciated the chance to create and show work in lockdown, they also commented on how much they enjoyed seeing the work others had created too. “I enjoyed seeing art made by artists of all abilities, all shared together. It gave a wonderful feeling of community and togetherness!” What I did last week is continuing online, and at time of publication we are up to Week 19 and have exhibited 386 artworks by 126 artists. For the Creative Communities team it’s been a privilege to receive the work each week from this creative and generous community. We hope this volume tells part of the ongoing story of our experience of COVID-19 in Central Victoria.

Angela Morrissey Expressionist Daffodils I 17 May 2020
Painted in the Expressionist style of art. Expressionism is an artistic and literary movement originating in Germany at the beginning of the 20th century, which sought to express emotions rather than to represent external reality, characterised by the use of symbolism and of exaggeration and distortion.

Duffy - Ha Ho Art Rise as one!
Acrylic on raw canvas 22 May 2020 This is an image that I had planned as a fairly large mural in Hargraeves St prior to the coronavirus lockdown. So I decided to paint a large canvas version of it instead! The canvas size is 2.1 metres high by 2.3 metres wide & it is painted on the raw side of a primed canvas or ‘Wrong Side’ as they say. I started the painting 3 weeks ago but decided today (Friday) that I need to finish it so I can move on & start another canvas version of a mural project that I have, in all probability, lost due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the COVID-19 lockdown period I’ve been saving all the takeaway coffee cups that The Wine Hub serves my ‘rescue remedy’ in each morning. I get a huge kick out of the artwork hugging those rich aromas and warming crema. Secretly, I hope that each coffee I order comes with different artwork from others I’ve collected. This drawing collages some of those images from the takeaway coffee cups with my own ink, and pencil drawing inspired from walking my dog (#harryofheathcote) through the liquid ambers.

2 July 2020 I have been back in Bendigo since the lockdown began and have been spending this time taking pictures of family and random things. This is my attempt at still life photography and it’s a work in progress as I experiment more with different viewpoints, lighting and textures.
Andre Sardone Ball of energy 5 July 2020
Another exploration using steel balls from a rock mill and steel rod. When this sculpture is touched it sets off a long lasting vibration through the piece.

Winter Waves A second wave
of COVID-19 floods Northwest Melbourne. Melbournians
wave
goodbye to transient freedoms. Colleagues
wave
goodbye to each other at the end of VC meetings. Sound
waves
undulate from TV speakers into the canals of pricked ears. Human
waves
around stadiums arise only in memories. Windscreen wipers
wave
at the spectres haunting city streets. Ocean
waves
crash into deserted beaches, rising ever higher.
Dr Michael J Leach Winter Waves 1 July 2020
This poem was inspired by news of Melbourne’s second wave of COVID-19.

Duffy - Ha Ho Art Amy
6 July 2020
This is a digitised print that I made last week of an Amy Winehouse painting (on paper) that I made a couple of years ago. It will form part of a new limited edition print & sticker series for my soon to be developed website. I have been feverishly studying/practising my photoshop skills not just to improve them so much, but also to develop my own unique style. I hope you like it!

Natasha Joyce Forever Grenfell
Digital manipulation of mosaic memorial 1 July 2020 On 14 June from the solitude of their homes, the Grenfell community collectively marked the third anniversary of the devasting tower fire in North Kensington. Seventytwo residents died and hundreds were left homeless. The Inquiry drags on. Hearings are suspended. No charges have been laid. Forever in our hearts.
Gail Casey Daydream Garden Digital drawing 12 July 2020
This digital drawing offered a chance to daydream—akin to the therapeutic nature of colouring. Playing with colour and shapes and the broad menu of Autodesk Sketchbook on my Surface Pro device.

Angela Morrissey Maya with Doll and Wooden Horse (after Picasso) 5 July 2020
Inspired by a painting of Picasso’s daughter Maya. The face, portrayed as a fusion of profile and frontal view, has a sinister expression, which completely overwhelms any impression of childlike innocence. Instead of a horse I have added a unicorn as I had unicorns as a child.

Pandemic Pup Pumped -up car tires roll
along the highway from Bendigo to Melbourne. A second wave of coronavirus keeps
roll
-ing across this, our state’s capital. We collect our new cavoodle puppy pre-emptively named
Roll
-o soon before lockdown. We giddily get back on the road & rapidly return to Bendigo. Back home, Rollo
roll
-s over in his enclosure, calling out for companions to come & play. His aptly-chosen name
roll
-s gently off honeyed tongues as we play with our precious one & fall in puppy love.
