The Solarize Virginia program returns to Albemarle County, the City of Charlottesville, and surrounding areas.

Adding solar power to your home is easier and more affordable than ever, thanks to Solarize Virginia, a program that reduces the cost and complexity of going solar by providing a one-stop shop for education and installation.

This grassroots, community-based outreach initiative is managed by the Local Energy Alliance Program (LEAP) and presented in partnership with the City of Charlottesville and the County of Albemarle. Through a competitive bidding process, LEAP has named Prospect Solar and Virtue Solar as their selected campaign installers for 2022.

The Solar Income Tax Credit is dropping from 26% to 22% at the end of 2022, and Solarize Virginia will help as many folks to take advantage of this higher rate as possible! This credit will reduce the price of Solarize Virginia’s already discounted residential solar installations by another 26%. We recommend that those interested in going solar sign up early to get their system installed by the end of the year.

Since 2014, 714 contracts have been signed through LEAP’s Solarize program across the state, generating more than 6.3 MW of solar capacity and over $17 million in value.

Through June 30, homeowners and businesses can sign up to receive a free solar satellite assessment, and gain access to discounted prices and vetted installers. LEAP will provide ongoing customer support and education throughout the process to make the experience as streamlined as possible.

More information is available to all community members at SolarizeVA.org.

Interested participants can also sign up to join an upcoming virtual information session. Registration is free and requires no commitment until you sign a contract with an installer.

“S

pring,” said the great Russian novelist Leo Tolstoy, a man happiest on his vast, hereditary estate, “is the time of plans and projects.” Or as Canadian writer Margaret Atwood puts it, shedding the descriptive for the imperative, “In the spring, at the end of the day, you should smell like dirt.”

Stats are unavailable for how many Virginians know their Tolstoy and their Atwood, but just look around and you’ll see how many agree with both. Gardens galore brighten our landscapes and freshen our eyes around here, as sure as winter accedes to spring. If no one’s at work in the house, they’re probably playing in the garden: planting, potting and plotting— “This fall let’s divide the bearded irises and start a bed next to the driveway”—and breathing in contentment.

It’s no wonder the Garden Club of Virginia has flourished, and that its annual gift to gardeners, young gardeners in training, and lucky garden-admiring spouses—Historic Garden Week, the nation’s only statewide house and garden tour—has become such a highly anticipated event.

And it’s almost that time.

Across the Commonwealth, over 100 private and public gardens, landscapes, homes and historic landmarks will be open for Historic Garden Week 2022, April 23 through 30.

Charlottesville-Albemarle’s individual tour, as always a self-driving excursion, is set for Sunday, April 24 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and will appeal to gardeners, history lovers, and architecture and house-beautiful buffs alike. Tourgoers will view grand historic and contemporary homes and estates, spectacular flower arrangements, and imaginative botanical and sculpture gardens in a pastoral setting of rolling farmland and sweeping mountain views.

Historic Garden Week itself dates to 1927, when the new Garden Club of Virginia held a flower show and raised $7,000 to save trees Jefferson had planted at Monticello. In the 95 years since, the Club has grown to comprise 48 member clubs and an impressive 3,400 volunteers, and has raised over $17 million for preservation and restoration of more than 50 historic public gardens and landscapes throughout the state.

Such beloved Virginia sites as Mount Vernon, Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, and the Pavilion Gardens at the University of Virginia have been its beneficiaries, and preservation projects are currently underway on other treasured properties, including Poplar Forest and the Executive Mansion in Richmond.

At the University of Virginia, the Garden Club of Virginia restored the Pavilion Gardens and their surrounding serpentine walls. The West Pavilion Gardens were restored between 1947 and 1953 and the East Lawn between 1960 and 1965. At Thomas Jeffrson’s Monticello, the Club restored the winding walk flower border in 1939-41, and Mulberry Row in 2015.

Garden Club take turns presenting the Charlottesville-Albemarle tour, with one club taking the lead each year. Here is what they have for us in 2022.

SCULPTURE AT INNISFREE VILLAGE

Brown’s Cove Hidden back in the Albemarle County foothills, the sweet spot called Brown’s Cove derives its name from the Brown family, who settled there over 275 years ago. Three of the remaining family homes and gardens, Mount Fair Farm, and Brightberry and Walnut Level at Innisfree Village, will be open for Historic Garden Week this year. And for the first time, so will Turkey Ridge, the modern home of one of Innisfree’s founders.

FEATURE

Brightberry Dating to 1790, Brightberry is the oldest of the three Brown family homes.

Renovations in 1989 modernized the home and redid its floor plan, but retained the original flooring and much of the original woodwork. The rebuilt chimneys still contain the original bricks—look for the chicken, deer, and dog imprints. Rooms were opened, and French doors and windows added to let in more sunlight.

Brightberry’s garden beds are lined with old brick, and feature oaks, maples, crepe myrtles, yew, conifers, hydrangeas, hollies, azaleas, lilacs, and an orchard of fruit trees. The large American boxwoods were relocated to their current locations 30 years ago to make room for new construction, and the homeowners have planted many hardwood trees, conifers, and a large assortment of their favorite understory trees, flowering shrubs, and perennials.

Flower beds and planters show off spring-blooming flowers. The pond is best seen from the restored enslaved community cemetery atop the hill near the parking area. Its banks are planted with a variety of willows and grasses to promote aquatic life.

Innisfree Village: Walnut Level and Turkey Ridge Innisfree Village is a residential community of intellectually disabled adults.

Founded in 1971, it now encompasses 550 acres and houses more than 75 staff members, coworkers, and volunteer caregivers.

At the center of the village are its therapeutic workstations: a bakery, community kitchen, farm, vegetable garden, herb garden, weaver, woodshop, “free school” and an art studio. Coworkers and their caregivers work side-by-side here to craft the many items, both creative and utilitarian, that Innisfree is known for, and that its market there on the property will offer for sale.

Built by Bezaleel Brown in 1810, Walnut Level is a traditional Federal style brick I-style house. Today it still has its original wainscoting. As an early real estate ad describes it, “This ancestral home has seven beautifully proportioned rooms, each with its own fireplace and hand-carved mantel, mellowed old wide heart pine floors and original locks.”

Today Walnut Level is home to Innisfree staff.

From Walnut Ridge, a trolley will take visitors to Turkey Ridge. This large pri-

vate home and garden belongs to one of Innisfree’s founders, and was built in 2000 “from the inside out” in such a way as to enhance the view and provide easy access to the garden. Its interior was designed to showcase the homeowner’s art collection.

Step outside and you’ll enter an exuberant garden resembling an enormous diorama, the product of an 18-year collaboration with horticulture specialist David Phipps. The life-size bronze wild animals and birds are by the noted sculptor Walter Matia.

Turkey Ridge enjoys lovely views of a pond, and sweeping vistas of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Gardens skirt the house, the most extensive being located at the rear, where the land slopes gently away.

Along crushed stone paths visitors will find a great variety of plants and shrubs

designed to serve both birds and pollinators, along with whimsical touches like “hopscotch garden” stones for kids to play on. Grasses and tall perennials sway in the breeze, adding soothing motion to the space. The homeowner is encouraging tourgoers to sit and rest on the many outdoor chairs and benches.

Mount Fair Farm Mount Fair Farm is one of the largest and best-preserved antebellum farms in Albemarle County, and also a Virginia and National Historic Landmark. Built for William T. Brown in 1848, Mount Fair is the grandest of the Brown family homes, with its impressive Greek Revival and Jeffersonian features.

Set on an imposing rise, the house is approached by a scenic stroll from the parking field below. Cross a bridge and

wander down a crushed-stone path and you come to a pond and some historic outbuildings, including an icehouse and smokehouse.

A mown path and rustic stairway lead to a 1.5-acre grove of hackberry, cherry, black locust, and dogwood trees that serves as a burial ground for over 120 of the estate’s enslaved workers. These workers are memorialized by a bronze plaque at the entrance to the restored cemetery.

Just a couple of minutes up the road from Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello and James Monroe’s Ash-Lawn, on land included in the original 1730 Carter family land grant, sits the home called Morven.

Thomas Jefferson knew it as “Indian Camp,” and purchased it for his “adoptive son” Col. William Short in 1795.

Short sold it to David Higginbotham in 1813.

While the tour oficially takes place on April 24, Historic Garden Weekers will have the opportunity to see this perennial tour favorite, weather permitting, on April 23. Morven was open for the first Historic Garden Week in Virginia in 1929 and is listed on the National

Register of Historic Places and on the Virginia Landmarks Register.

Builder Martin Thacker constructed the three-story brick, late Georgian/Federal style manor house for David and Mary Higginbotham circa 1820. Subsequent additions and interior renovations since have not disturbed its 19th century ambience.

Landscape architect Annette Hoyt Flanders restored Morven’s gardens in 1930, adding entrance gates, brick detailing, and slate seats, along with designs to plant shrubs, perennials, and annuals in a palette of purple, blue, pink, white, and yellow. The gardens include a dove tree, a pair of Osage orange trees, and a Chinese chestnut.

An atrium opens onto a formal water garden, where the white buds of deutzia ‘Yukon Snowflake’ lie along the path. The nearby cutting garden holds daffodils, violas, dianthus ‘Vivid Bright Light,’ phlox sublet ‘Emerald Blue,’ nepeta ‘Prussian Blue’ and peonies, which flower in May. Several blueberry shrubs will be in bloom.

Mount Fair’s extensive facilities ornament the rolling landscape with equestrian barns, an indoor riding arena, orchards, and an apiary, all offering stunning Blue Ridge Mountain views.

A greenhouse with native plants and vegetables, including green and purple asparagus; spring greens, garlic ‘Music’ and ‘German Red.’ The beds behind the greenhouse include violas, ‘Pink Marvel’ salvia, chives, and muscari latifolium.

Flowers, herbs and vegetables are not all that’s grown in Mount Fair’s soil.

Seven acres are set aside for a vineyard where classic Bordeaux varietals are grown for Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc wines.
