We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: Planning a wedding is hard work. For more than five years, C-VILLE Weddings has been helping local couples with tips and advice for pulling off a seamless soirée. But, starting with this issue, we’ve reformatted our approach to make it even easier. At the start of each section, you’ll find a checklist—all the things you’ll need to do before your big day arrives, in chronological order (one year, six months and three months out). And we’ve expanded on a few of those tasks, introducing you to local businesses and ideas you can use for your wedding—from how to hire a DJ to edible favors for your guests. Plus, this year for the first time, we’ve asked readers to weigh in on the best vendors in town. You’ll find the results of that poll on page 85. Like we said, wedding planning ain’t easy. But, you’ve found your true love—the hard part’s over!—Caite White

WEDDING PLANNER The “OMG I’m getting married!” Phase
A thunderstorm interrupted Anne and Staton’s engagement session at Carter Mountain, but photographer Jen Fariello pressed on, capturing this once-in-a-lifetime shot.
One year before
Work out your budget. Know your limit before considering much else. Set a tentative date for your wedding. Decide on your wedding style and formality. This may be determined, in part, by how many guests you want to invite, so think about the guest list now, too. ✓ Settle on a ceremony location. Put down a deposit for the reception location. ✓ Begin the search for other wedding vendors (transportation, flowers, invitations, music, makeup artist), starting with photographers and videographers. Once you’ve chosen your wedding photographer, schedule an engagement photo session. Start shopping for wedding rings. Reserve your officiant. ✓ If your reception venue doesn’t have a caterer, decide who’ll provide the food and book a tasting. Choose a rehearsal dinner location. Shop for a dress. It may seem too soon, but it can take several months for your dress to arrive, and it may require alterations. After you’ve found the perfect gown, schedule fittings and a delivery date. ✓ Choose your bridal party and invite them to be part of your special day.

Start finalizing the guest list and gathering addresses. Register for gifts. If there is a groom, decide to rent or purchase attire for him and the groomsmen. Once that’s decided, place your order. Finalize all the vendors and secure your wedding date by putting down deposits. Select the bridesmaids’ gowns. These’ll take a few months to come in, too. Send out save the dates.

t’s a tale (tail?) of true love. More and more people are including their dogs in their wedding. After all, they’re family (and maybe more likable than some relatives). From acting as best man to flower dog to ring bearer, Fido’s getting in on the action. How? Find a venue that allows pets, and let your vendors know of your plans. Hire a handler to bring Fido to the event before the ceremony and take him home afterward (and keep him away from the wedding cake!). Ask the older children in the wedding party to help him get down the aisle. Cville Concierge offers dog-handling services for your big day. You only need to provide a health history of the dog, emergency contact info and preferences as to where to keep the dog during the event. Says founder Sue Battani, “We also love to hear a bit of the dog’s personality—fears, disabilities and what makes their tails wag!”—Caite White

ONE YEAR BEFORE: CHOOSE A VENUE
A historic event A layered past brings gravitas to nuptials at a new venue
S
even Oaks Farm in Albemarle County has quite the history. From its original owner, Reverend Samuel Black, the first Presbyterian minister in Albemarle County, to a more recent owner, Dave Matthews Band manager Coran Capshaw, the property has had its share of high-profile tenants. And visitors, too: from explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to Gibson Girl Irene Gibson, the farm has plenty of famous footprint. Now it’s adding a new chapter to its colorful past: Couples can rent it as a wedding venue. The sprawling 100-plus acres in Greenwood offer a Greek Revival-style manor, pool house and breathtaking mountain views. Owners Sarah and Todd Zimmerman bought the property from Capshaw in 2014. Both are UVA grads (and their son is a rising third-year), and say they appreciated its rich legacy. “It’s got a lot of ties to UVA,” Sarah says. “When Reverend Black sold it, it went to the
first bursar of the university, Alexander Garrett. We fell in love with its history, the views, the grounds—and we loved the vineyard.” Oh yeah, there’s a vineyard, too. Its seven acres boast Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Syrah and Viognier grapes. The Zimmermans plan to expand it to include an on-site winery and tasting room, and those visions really spurred the couple’s decision to purchase the property. The idea of using it as a wedding venue didn’t come until after they’d become owners, but it seemed to be a natural fit. “Our plan was to start a winery, but then we got a lot of inquiries about having a wedding,” Todd says. And just like that, a new Charlottesvillearea wedding destination was born. The pair converted two rooms in the circa-1842 manor house into a dressing suite for bridal parties and made a few other minor modifications, but they say the property’s picturesque qualities make it ideal just as it is.

Several private events have been hosted on the grounds but only two weddings have been held here so far (see one on page 46), with two more planned in 2016. The Zimmermans are careful not to overbook, and they provide brides carte blanche. For a $10,000 venue fee, a couple has complete use of the grounds for a full weekend. “You can customize it as you wish, and we don’t schedule more than one event per week,” Sarah says, “which means a bride has the luxury of access from Friday through Sunday for setup and teardown without rushing. We don’t push people out to get someone else in.” Brides need to bring in everything from chairs to caterers, but the Zimmermans are willing to accommodate some pretty special requests, like one bride’s father, who wanted access to the property a month before the wedding so he could bury a bottle of bourbon there for good luck. Another couple asked if they could prepare one of the farm’s estate-raised Pekin ducks to serve at the rehearsal dinner. That flexibility is part of what makes the Zimmermans, and Seven Oaks Farm, special. Says Sarah, “We’re a blank slate.”—Lynn Thorne

ONE YEAR OUT: DECIDE ON A CATERER
Let’s talk food Harvest Moon guides us through the catering process
O
ne thing we know to be true about wedding food: It’s an important part of a successful day. Harvest Moon Catering’s director of sales, Kelly Mahanes, agrees. “It’s the beginning of your story,” she says. A good caterer is there to guide you through the almost limitless options of cuisine and “bring people together around the dinner table,” no matter the size. We asked Mahanes to help us dig in to making the right catering decisions. No matter who you end up going with, she says, “find somebody you click with, somebody that you trust to take care of everything for you. Make a decision based off of how you feel about them, not necessarily their reputation. The goal is to have the professionals handle it and for you to let go.”—Faith Schweikert
The consultation When? Mahanes suggests booking your tasting at least one year out from your wedding date. Due to the overwhelming popularity of Charlottesville as a wedding destination, tastings fill up rapidly. They are also difficult to book during May, June, September and October, as caterers are busy at previously booked weddings. How long it takes: Harvest Moon books tastings in two-hour time slots. It will generally take an hour-and-a-half to try the four to six appetizer options, salad and bread course, three to four protein options and the vegetable and starch sides and confer with the staff. How much: At Harvest Moon, tastings are free. Says Mahanes, “We’ve played around with the idea [of charging for tastings] for several years but, ultimately, from the beginning we want it to be a comfortable experience. And that’s worth whatever monetary loss we may have from it.”
PHOTOS: RACHEL MAY PHOTOGRAPHY
What to bring: A list of questions about menu styles, dietary restrictions, pricing and what is included. Also arrive hungry. “We hate for people to come in full or close because, at a certain point, everything starts to taste the same when you’re full and we want to avoid that,” Mahanes says. Cost and selection: The price per head will vary depending on headcount, rentals, serving style and labor needed. Here’s a basic price list: Food: $36-44 per person Beverages: $7-26 per person Labor: varies Total: $95-140 per person
16
WEDDING PLANNER The “OMG I’m getting married!” Phase
Popular foods by season Mahanes says because “Charlottesville is a very locally driven community, we design our menu starting from what the local seasonal menu is and branch out from there.” FALL: ■ Seared grouper with carrot butter, whole roasted carrots and fingerling potatoes ■ Roasted vegetable pavé with tomato chevre butter and wilted arugula ■ Mixed greens with champagne vinaigrette and roasted beet root, apple, chevre mousse, hazelnut sable and white balsamic-honey gel ■ Charred tomato soup shooter with white cheddar grilled cheese SPRING: ■ Salad of mixed greens, arugula, quinoa, crumbled chevre, shaved spring vegetables and citrus vinaigrette ■ Garden beignet ■ Green onion aioli SUMMER: ■ Seared salmon over a ragu of sweet corn, bacon lardons, potato, fennel, fresno chilies and dill cream YEAR-ROUND: ■ Beef tenderloin with grilled shrimp and grilled fresh artichokes, black barley and Banyuls sauce ■ Hickory-smoked lemon and rosemary chicken with spinach-basil cream ■ Yellowfin tuna tartare taco with pickled ginger and wasabi aioli

lmost as much as you cannot wait to be a brand-new Mrs., you are giddy at the thought of your best buds standing up with you, holding your flowers, handing you tissues and pretending not to notice you getting all blotchy with happy crying. But as you fall hard into the gently curated arms of Pinterest in search of the perfect way to ask your girls (classic boozy brunch date? Box full of treats and a handwritten note? Singing telegram?), you remember Jenn, whom you don’t really see anymore, but whose wedding you were in a few years ago, and who’s, like, totally sweet. And your cousin Lisa, whom you get along with just fine and who really, really would love to be there for you. And your college roommate Annie, who made you wear that taffeta monstrosity on her wedding day despite assurances that she loves you like a sister. And,

and, and... You are now drowning in obligatory wedding party invites that dwarf your guest list. For advice on who should make the cut, Candy Girl turned to Meghan Streit, owner of Shindig Weddings & Events. Like most of the best advice, it’s pretty simple: “Only select a maid if you can’t imagine your day without her by your side.” Your party, Streit says, should be your present-day nearest-and-dearest, with whom you cannot wait to share all of your wedding day joy. And, just as important, whom you can count on to help with the pre-wedding prep. “Think of [a party invite] as not only an honor,” Streit says, “but as work, too. Which of your ladies will be willing to craft with you late into the night, or save up for all of the expenses entailed with being a maid?” Which indeed! Certainly not Lisa...

Prepare all maps and directions for the ceremony and reception. Meet with your florist and choose arrangements for the ceremony and reception, as well as bouquets. If your caterer doesn’t provide one, order your wedding cake. Begin doing research for your marriage license.
Meet with both sets of parents to coordinate their day-of attire.
✓ Reserve accommodations for out-of-
town guests. (Consider doing this even earlier if you’re planning a wedding on busy in-town weekends like homecoming or during other local events that draw a crowd.)
Order invitations.
✓ Start thinking about honeymoon
destinations.
Four months before
Address and send out your invitations and announcements. Include information regarding the accommodations. (Also consider creating a website with all of the accommodation information. Guests might like to get a head start on making those arrangements and most hotels close your block four weeks out.) Arrange for final dress fittings.
Purchase wedding guest book.
✓ Order your wedding favors, bridal party
gifts and other wedding accessories (Champagne glasses, ring bearer pillow, cake knife, etc.).

How to give your guests the best

our big day is notable for a few reasons—not the least of which is that it’s a great occasion to gather everyone you love in one room. But they’ll all need somewhere to stay at the end of the night. We talked to folks at Courtyard by Marriott, the Graduate Charlottesville and the Boar’s Head Inn to get the scoop on the way to stay. When to book?
Making reservations a year in advance isn’t unreasonable, but for weddings that don’t fall on a busy weekend, six months should do it. And many of these hotels will reserve rooms closer to the wedding date on a case-by-case basis. How much can I get?
This varies by hotel. At the Boar’s Head Inn, couples can reserve up to 20 rooms
27
per night with a two-night minimum for their guests. The Graduate allows parties to block off 10 rooms without penalty if they aren’t picked up, and the same goes for Courtyard by Marriott. What’s included?
Rooms for wedding parties are much the same as any other room in each of these respective hotels. However, everyone we spoke to promised that guests in a wedding party will be housed as closely to each other as possible to allow for easier access to one another during their time there. Often, too, small gifts may be included upon request. The Boar’s Head Inn, for instance, will include certain “value adds” like chocolate-dipped strawberries with Champagne or continental breakfast in bed. Cost and selection
Contact the hotels directly to figure out a price that works best for you. There is no fixed cost, as the room price will vary depending on what is going on in the hotel and in Charlottesville, when you need the rooms, how many you need, etc.—Faith Schweikert

electing a wedding officiant is just as important as deciding on flowers, food, dress attire and music. I consider it a privilege to collaborate with ALL couples from all walks of life, and gender as they plan their wedding celebration. Whether the ceremony is for a small, intimate group or a huge gathering, it is important that you feel comfortable with your officiant and confident that your ceremony is in good hands. My goal is to work with you in customizing your ceremony, making it the most magical of transformations. By learning about your wishes, traditions, beliefs and your love story, I can help project your ceremony as an extension of who you are. The words in your ceremony are one of the most important parts of your service.
S
Appointed by the Commonwealth of Virginia to perform civil ceremonies, I have officiated hundreds of weddings since 2003. My services are reasonably priced. My philosophy is that I believe couples have more things to worry about when planning their wedding than whether or not they can afford their officiant. Outside of Virginia, I hold a ministerial certificate with the Universal Life Church enabling me to legally perform weddings in other states. I have performed beautiful weddings at the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina, the Towers of Narragansette in Rhode Island and in Scottsdale, Arizona to name a few. Please contact me so that together we can come to know each other and discover how I can help you plan your wedding. Being an officiant, for me, is such an honor and a pleasure as I enjoy working with you to help co-create a magnificent tapestry of words and sentiments that perfectly reflect who you are in love and marriage!

Customized glasses and koozies are fine for some, but an edible favor—something for your guest to munch on on the way back to the hotel, or discover in a carry-on during the journey home—that’s the stuff of true thoughtfulness. Here are two of our (and your—see page 93!) favorites.—Caite White

our wedding day. The biggest (happiest, craziest, most expensive—insert your adjective here) day of your life. It’s you and your significant other, pledging to spend the rest of your lives together. But for many brides, it’s also become a goal to get their wedding featured in glossy bridal magazine, website or blog. Lynn Easton of Easton Events says it’s a sign of the times. “We live in a world where every moment of every day is captured. Each morsel of food we put in our mouths is put on Instagram.” But she also says that it’s a way for the happy couple to relive their special day long after the last guest leaves. “It gives a wedding a whole new life. They can share that with everyone, and every bride who’s lucky enough to get their wedding published is always grinning from ear to ear when she sees it in print.” But trying to get published for publishing’s sake can detract from the focus of the day. Weddings used to be somewhat cookie-cutter, with white tablecloths and party favors. Now, the bar’s been raised and most couples strive to make their event as personalized as possible. That can mean upping the stress level. It’s easy enough to get swept up in making sure every detail is perfect. Add to that the pressure of planning a wedding with the hope of getting Internet famous, and it’s
From C-VILLE Weddings’ editor:
While an unusual color combination or an exaggerated bouquet will certainly get my attention as I sift through wedding photos and consider what to publish, what trumps the details, for me, is a genuinely happy couple. Just get lost in your own happiness and the result will be too hard for an editor (this one, at least) to resist. See four of my recent favorites starting on page 46.—Caite White

enough to drive some brides to the brink of crazy. It also might change some details of the day. Easton says, “The tricky thing about the desire to be published is that you might have to do something that is more for a picture and less for the experience.” Try focusing instead on the details that carry a personal signficance, like weaving your great-grandmother’s wedding gloves into your bouquet or using a piece of your mother-in-law’s veil as part of your own. Those are touches that will be meaningful to you, regardless of who’s flipping through The Knot. If you’re still determined to vie for a glossy layout, it doesn’t require you to go overboard. Easton, whose work has been published everywhere from Martha Stewart Weddings to Vogue, cautions: “Some of the most published weddings are incredibly simple.” Details are key, as are things that are unique, so make sure that your designs are as special as you are. Think about the layout, too—you’ll need both vertical and horizontal details that will work well in a published format. And don’t be afraid of reaching out to smaller publications that might not get as many submissions. Remember: At the end of the day, it’s your day, so do your best to stay focused on the reason you’re there.—Lynn Thorne

hough DJ John Garland once had clients text him a picture of a wedding attendant from whom he shouldn’t take requests, coming up with a playlist is typically pretty stress-free. But that’s just one piece of the puzzle when it comes to hiring a DJ. Garland says, regardless of which DJ they’re interviewing, couples should ask for a list of recent references, a backup plan in case of emergency and what they’ll need to provide (protection from weather, time for setup, power source, etc.). But, it’s also a good idea to talk about the DJ’s level of involvement at the reception. Because a DJ often serves as a reception director—announcing the newlyweds, introducing various highlights of the evening

(first dance, cake cutting)—it’s important to be upfront about those expectations. Ask about his or her ability to liaise with other vendors and how involved the couple can be when choosing the music. From there, it’s just a conversation about what songs (or styles of music) to include or exclude. As for Garland, he personally doesn’t mind taking requests—and especially loves receiving them for Delbert McClinton’s “Have a Little Faith in Me,” which was his and his wife’s first dance song at their own wedding. “I am a people-pleaser,” he says. “I try my best to make everyone enjoy the event I am working and feel catered to.”—Caite White

For the tent poles, Sara wanted to add some soft, lush details. Tourterelle added various ferns, flowers and creeping vines.
ith the threat of a storm encroaching on their big day, Sara and Frank decided that,
even though they had wanted to wait until they met at the altar, a first look before the ceremony made sense in case it rained (“We wanted to have a few pictures to show our children,” Sara says). They met under Seven Oaks’ Jefferson oak tree, the last of, well, seven oaks on the property, all named after presidents. “The sun was shining and it was so magical getting to share that moment and have a private memory of just us,” says Sara. Ultimately, the rain held off until the last bus of guests drove off, leaving the couple with the beautiful day they’d pictured: Old Hollywood with Southern charm. “We mixed in vintage metals and gold accents with soft, romantic pastels to complement the natural greenery of the vineyard,” she says. “Everything was truly a dream.”

The bride’s and bridesmaids’ bouquets included anemones, aphrodite roses, hydrangea and ranunculus, creating a lush, elegant look in shades of blush, gold and champagne.
t’s fitting that Maggie and James were married at a vineyard. The day the couple got engaged, they had been visiting one Loudoun County winery after another as, unbeknownst to Maggie,
James’ surprise proposal was thwarted by a bachelorette party at each location. Once he was finally able to pop the question (later that evening at Washington, D.C.’s Botanic Garden), the couple decided on a late-winter wedding at Pippin Hill Farm & Vineyards. It was important to them to aesthetically bridge the gap between winter and spring. That meant keeping a formal vibe in a soft color palette—long, silk bridesmaids gowns in blush pink, traditional peaked-lapel tuxedos and plenty of flowers. Maggie and James were married under an arbor covered in hydrangeas, roses, magnolia branches and jasmine; lush arrangements hung above the farmhouse tables from suspended antique

ileen played hard to get for a little over a year before agreeing to go on a date with Jamil. They had a great
time. “I wasn’t surprised,” she says, “because I liked him even when I was avoiding him.” The couple were together six-and-a-half years before their spring wedding at Verulam Farm. Eileen was a bit more decisive on that front. Knowing they both liked a simple aesthetic with an unexpected pop of color, she chose classic navy for the bridesmaids (Jamil’s sisters) and coral for a bright punch, which carried over into the bouquets. “I thought about all the colors I love during springtime and things started falling more and more into place,” Eileen says. But her favorite detail is one she thought of spur-of-the-moment. “Walking down the aisle with my dad, looking at all our guests and seeing Jamil standing at the front—it was very surreal. Jamil looked so handsome and sweet,” she says. “I didn’t

Elliott Watkins
NOVEMBER 1, 2015

t all started with the suit. Elliott had a traditional tweed three-piece made in England, where he’s from, and the wedding planning unfolded from there. “That kind
of created a theme for us,” says Chloe. “We tried to incorporate elements of England, like a traditional English wedding cake and mini beef Wellington appetizers, with American traditions like burying the bourbon, mini late-night sliders and Bud Light.” The couple crossed a Union Jack and an American flag behind them at the altar and set up a gin and bourbon bar for guests. “We had Elliott’s family bring in lots of interesting gins from England, which we had paired with different tonics and garnishes for people to sample. We did the same for the bourbon,” Chloe says. But what was her favorite part of the day? “Besides all of it?” she asks. “Really, just the flow of the weekend.” Chloe’s family owns and operates Veritas Vineyard & Winery and, because the couple had a small wedding, they were able to host guests in the winery’s bed and breakfast. “Elliott and I were really able to spend time with our guests for the entire weekend rather than just see them briefly at the main event.”
77
Not wanting to lean too heavily on the autumn theme, the couple used burgundy as their base color and asked Blue Ridge Floral’s Amy Webb to brighten up the bouquets. She incorporated shades of pink and jewel tones.
Chloe and Elliott met as kids in Elliott’s grandparents’ backyard in England and reconnected when Elliott was looking for work in the wine business following winemaking school. Their friendship blossomed into a romance and he proposed on Christmas Eve, just over a year after they started dating.
Legend has it that burying a bourbon bottle upside down one month before your wedding keeps away the rain. Bonus: digging it up on the big day.

DAY EVER
EACH YEAR, C-VILLE Weekly asks readers to choose the best things about Charlottesville— from swimming hole to steak. This time around, we added a new category: Weddings. We asked local brides to tell us, if they could do it all again (if only!), whom would they entrust with their special day? Behold, 85 the results.
BEST OF C-VILLE WEDDINGS
PHOTOGRAPHER Robert Radifera RUNNER-UP: Jen Fariello HONORABLE MENTION: Sarah Cramer Shields
PHOTOS: ROBERT RADIFERA
A former economics major, Robert Radifera discovered he was, in fact, a photographer during a college trip to Paris. Twenty years later, he’s known locally for not only capturing the big, blockbuster moments, but the quieter details of your special day as well.

BEST OF C-VILLE WEDDINGS
REHEARSAL DINNER VENUE The Local RUNNER-UP: C&O Restaurant HONORABLE MENTION: Old Metropolitan Hall Choices, choices, choices. That’s the name of the game at The Local, where wedding parties can situate in one of four areas—the ultracozy Hearth Room, the covered Blue Ridge Pavilion, the pergolaed Skyline Room or the smaller, budget-friendly Wine Room. In any location, chef Matthew Hart’s menu elevates local (obviously) trout, beef, chicken, vegetarian and pasta dishes.
WEDDING PLANNER Meghan Streit (Shindig Weddings & Events)
WEDDING VENUE Pippin Hill Farm & Vineyards
Vineyards for the win! For Charlottesville brides, there’s no better big-day backdrop than lush vines and a mountain view. And, at Pippin Hill, you get both of those plus the expertise of chef Bill Scatena, who sources ingredients from nearby farms and the venue’s own kitchen garden. Not to mention a beautifully designed barn-like structure you get the full run of—from the bridal loft to the tasting room.
CINEMATOGRAPHER Ian’s Creations RUNNER-UP: Tom Daly HONORABLE MENTION: Stonestreet Creative If a picture is worth a thousand words, how much is a moving picture worth? We’ll let the newlyweds answer that—they’ve been hiring Ian’s Creations to document their nuptials for more than 15 years. Owner Ian Atkins specializes in crafting a sweet, sentimental film so you can continue to let the memories move you long after you ride off into the sunset.
RUNNER-UP: Colleen Miller (Colleen Miller Events) HONORABLE MENTION: Dickie Morris (Just A Little Ditty)
CONNOR STUDIOS
RUNNER-UP: Keswick Vineyards HONORABLE MENTION: King Family Vineyards
CATERER Harvest Moon Catering RUNNER-UP: Barbeque Exchange HONORABLE MENTION: C&O Restaurant Free tastings, in-house rentals (a rarity for local catering companies)—and don’t even get us started on the food. Harvest Moon continues to impress with seasonal menus and a helpful staff that’s truly invested in your big day. For those who really wanna chow down, Barbeque Exchange piles on the pork and an array of Southern sides from pickles to pepper cabbage.
FLORIST Southern Blooms by Pat’s Floral Design RUNNER-UP: Hedge Fine Blooms HONORABLE MENTION: Ivy Nursery

A wedding planner’s job is to take your big day from a hodge-podge Pinterest board to a fully realized vision that takes into account each detail. Readers say there is no one more up to the task than Meghan Streit, who takes on a limited number of weddings each year to ensure that you get her full attention—and exactly the day you always dreamed of. Brides can expect to spend 10 to 15 percent of their wedding budget on flowers. And, when done right, it’s worth it to walk into your reception, table arrangements overflowing with bright blooms and the air smelling of springtime. That’s where Southern Blooms comes in. Mother-daughter partners Pat Roberts and Sherry Spencer are the go-to gals for beautiful bouquets—the cherry on top of your already perfect day. CONTINUED ON PAGE 89

BAND (OR BOOKING AGENCY) Sam Hill Entertainment RUNNER-UP: 20 South Music HONORABLE MENTION: Gallatin Canyon When Sam Hill Entertainment was founded in the ’90s, owner Sam Wells was looking for a way to avoid getting a “real job.” He began booking bands at local venues, in awe of the way live music transforms a crowd. And while that fascination eventually turned into a “real job,” the company’s fun-loving philosophy has never changed. Its job is to ensure that your wedding, as they say, turns into a party.
CAKES AND DESSERTS Maliha Creations RUNNER-UP: Albemarle Baking Co. HONORABLE MENTION: Pearl’s Bake Shoppe Want a cake that looks like a wine bottle? Or in the shape of UVA’s Rotunda? Or maybe you’d prefer a simple stack of tiers with a cascade of flowers. Maliha Creations’ Anita Gupta makes beautiful cakes inside and out. And the best part? Your (at least) 100-serving cake comes with a fresh tier on your one-year anniversary.
DJ (OR BOOKING AGENCY) John Garland DJ Services
It’s an age-old wedding question (well, modern age-old): band or DJ? DJ John Garland would vote DJ, unequivocally. He has a library of music spanning more than 30,000 songs— from the cool beats of a late-night jazz club to the twangy strum of Americana—and is CONTINUED ON PAGE 90

SOUND AND LIGHTING Blue Ridge AV & Lighting RUNNER-UP: MS Events HONORABLE MENTION: The AV Company When it comes to your wedding-day checklist, lighting can’t be overlooked. It helps set the mood, from colorful spotlights to custom monograms emblazoned on the dance floor. Blue Ridge AV & Lighting makes it work no matter if you’re in a barn or a banquet hall. Plus, the local company offers sound and fabric décor services, too. TOM DALY
CEREMONY MUSICIAN Charlottesville High School String Quartet
An interfaith minister, Reverend Claire Goodman has performed ceremonies for nearly 800 weddings since 2004. She starts with an initial meet-and-greet and from there discusses what’s most important to you—is there a cultural or religious element? Do you want rituals, prayers, vows?—so that you are a part of the process when it comes to crafting the perfect ceremony. After all, you’re only doing this once.
RUNNER-UP: Plum Blossom String Quartet HONORABLE MENTION: Michael Coleman The Charlottesville High School Orchestra program has taken home many awards over the years, emphasizing excellence in all of its musicians. But the string ensemble’s quartet, currently called Magnolia and comprising four rising 12th-graders, takes the prize in this category. Self-directed by the students, Magnolia performs at a variety of events in and around Charlottesville.

INVITES/CALLIGRAPHY Rock Paper Scissors RUNNER-UP: If So INKlined HONORABLE MENTION: Jodi Macfarlan Calligraphy Save-the-dates and invitations are the first inkling (pun intended) you give your guests about the look and feel of your wedding. Is it formal? Is it bohemian? Is it on-trend? Rock Paper Scissors helps set the right tone
WEDDING JEWELRY Erin McDermott Jewelry RUNNER-UP: Fink’s Jewelers HONORABLE MENTION: Andrew Minton Jewelry With her jewelry worn by brides and bridesmaids at more than 200 weddings in 2015, it’s no surprise Erin McDermott takes the top prize in this category. Her handcrafted designs range from the classic—freshwater pearls on a gold teardrop—to the unexpected—bright druzy crystals in unique color combos. In the runner-up spot, Fink’s, founded by a former pharmacist in 1930, has the right prescription for beautiful bridal jewels. every time. Co-owner Dani Antol will help you navigate the process of custom printing—letterpress! Engraving! Thermography!—until you’re an expert (and you’re having a good time).
BRIDAL SHOP Sealed With A Kiss RUNNER-UP: Bella Rosa Bridal HONORABLE MENTION: Church Street Bridal Charlottesville isn’t exactly overrun with bridal shops, but even if there were 100, we’re betting Sealed With A Kiss, the downtown boutique (and its sister store in Richmond) specializing in everything from wedding gowns to bridesmaid dresses, would still take the top prize. Owner Susan Sorbello has more than 20 years in the business and knows how to make each bride feel special for her special day.

Gone are the days of stiff, shellacked, promesque hairdos. Stylist Erica Haskins knows what modern brides want. In a word? Movement. With nearly 20 years of experience in cutting and styling, Haskins, from her downtown salon or on location, coaxes your hair into a thing of beauty that still looks natural and touchable. Brides turn to her when they want a great big-day ’do (rather than a don’t).
MAKEUP ARTIST Rouge 9 RUNNER-UP: Daphne Latham HONORABLE MENTION: The Spot Beauty Shop They don’t call them “blushing brides” for nothin’. Of course, you don’t want to be too blushing, which is where Rouge 9’s Linda Livernois comes in. A former makeup artist for Lancôme and Chanel, Livernois ensures makeup isn’t the first thing people see as you walk down the aisle. And on a day when all eyes are on you, that’s an important consideration.
TENTS AND RENTALS Skyline Tent Company
JEN FARIELLO
RUNNER-UP: Festive Fare HONORABLE MENTION: MS Events
Skyline Tent Company
It’s been said that rain on your wedding day is good luck, but tell that to a bride who’s about to walk her Monique Lhullier into her outdoor reception under a gray sky. Among Skyline Tents’ many offerings—flooring, lighting, tables and chairs—it also provides a reserve option. Keep a tent on hold in case of rain so you don’t have to worry. Talk about having it covered.
93
RUNNER-UP: Camryn Limousine HONORABLE MENTION: Monticello Wine Tour & Coach While planning her own daughter’s Charlottesville wedding, Albemarle Limousine founder Andrea Saathoff couldn’t believe the closest car rental company was in Washington, D.C. So she started her own. Eight years later, Albemarle Limousine has a fleet ranging from threepassenger sedans to 55-passenger buses. Plus, a collection of pictureready vintage cars (like a 1940 Senior Packard limo).
GIFTS AND FAVORS One Creative Cookie RUNNER-UP: Gearharts Fine Chocolates HONORABLE MENTION: Feast! Here’s something truly impressive (and, we’re sure, the reason One Creative Cookie takes top honors). Among the business’s many sweet treats, it serves up cookies with your picture iced on them. Have your photographer send over a photo from your first look and, by the time you arrive at the reception, a whole batch of customized cookies will have made their way from the kitchen to guests’ lips. In the runner-up spot, it’s hard to say no to a Gearharts truffle. That’s just a fact of life.
MARRY MAKING

isa Green and Amy-Sarah Marshall met four years ago, during the planning phase of Charlottesville’s first Cville Pride Festival, which Amy-Sarah founded. “I was a very happy single person, owned my own home and my dog and I had everything happily where I could find it,” says Lisa, a planning commissioner with the City of Charlottesville. And so, as she began developing feelings for Amy-Sarah, she tried to fight them off. But “time marched on and I grew weak,” she admits. “[Amy-Sarah] and her two children moved in—completely turned my house and world upside-down.” Says Amy-Sarah, “We had watched marriage equality come to Virginia, and then to the whole country, with great excitement for friends who had been waiting for decades to have the right to get legally hitched. But whenever the subject came up about us, Lisa was evasive, which I
understood. When you haven’t had the option to do something for so long, you kind of learn to not want something you can’t have.” But suddenly something clicked for Lisa. With one week before the fourth Pride Festival, she realized: “Marriage was more about verbalizing my commitment to Amy-Sarah before our friends, family and, yes, God. I wanted to let her know—not just assume she knew.”—Caite White
Amy-Sarah: The morning of the fourth annual Pride Festival, I had the microphone on the stage at Lee Park and was about to welcome everyone to kick off the event when Lisa spontaneously asked if she could do it. "Sure," I said. She began speaking—grabbed my hand—and it started dawning on me that she was talking about us and me, not the festival. She led me off the stage and walked me to the middle of the park. L: I knew from the moment I stood in Lee Park on September 15, 2012, at 8:42am that Amy-Sarah was the one—and that was the place I asked her to stop the world from turning once more and to please marry me. A-S: The morning of that first event, we hugged right in the middle of the park. That is exactly the spot where she dropped down on her knee (she had an X there that I hadn’t noticed!) and held up this gorgeous blue sapphire ring and asked me to marry her, practically knocking my rainbow socks off. Lisa Green and Amy-Sarah Marshall were married at IX Art Park on June 20, 2016. It was the first LGBTQ wedding at the venue.

PHOTOS: SARAH CRAMER SHIELDS
Lisa: So we are one week from the Pride Festival and I am the festival director, so I have a lot going on. I went to my favorite jeweler and asked her if she could do me the biggest favor of my life and make me a ring in one week. I begged!
