Two weeks after Albemarle County’s first homicide of the year on July 4, police identified the victim July 20 as Marvin Joel Rivera-Guevara, 24. He was found in Moores Creek, and police held off releasing his name until it was confirmed by the state medical examiner’s office, but a GoFundMe account identified him in trying to raise $10,000 to send his body back to El Salvador.

Pipeline nears project approval The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission released its final environmental impact statement for the Atlantic Coast Pipeline July 21, which said the proposed 600-mile, $5.5 billion natural gas pipeline will have a “less than significant” impact on the environment.

“The [final environmental impact statement] paints a terrifying picture of a bleak future,” says Ernie Reed, president of the anti-pipeline group Friends of Nelson.

According to Reed, the ACP will eliminate almost 5,000 acres of interior forest habitat and destroy 200 acres of national forests and nearly 2,000 waterbody crossings along its path from West Virginia to North Carolina. “And all this to give Dominion and Duke Energy enough gas to burn our way into hell,” he adds.

Dominion Energy and Duke Energy are the major companies backing the ACP. “Over the last three years, we’ve taken unprecedented steps to protect environ-

mental resources and minimize impacts on landowners,” says Leslie Hartz, Dominion Energy’s vice president of engineering and construction. She says her team has made more than 300 route adjustments to avoid environmentally sensitive areas. “In many areas of the project, we’ve adopted some of the most protective construction methods that have ever been used by the industry.”

The auto pay kiosk for Albemarle County taxes went on the fritz and dinged 152 ontime payments made before the June 15 deadline as late, and sent notices with late payment fees. Those have been corrected, reports the Daily Progress, but workers processing the county’s lock box payments also entered the wrong dates, making a similar number of tax-paying citizens late.

Longtime Woolen Mills resident Bill Emory, who is a former member of the City Planning Commission, advocated for passing the ordinance at the City Council meeting, and said historic conservation districts were created to protect the character of “modest, historic neighborhoods without imposing harsh requirements on residents who want to remodel their homes.”

He said there have been no homeowner appeals to council regarding the ordinance since two conservation districts were implemented in the Martha Jefferson and Venable neighborhoods in 2010 and 2014, respectively.

City Councilor Kathy Galvin, an architect, has been vocal in supporting the proposed zoning regulations. She says the Board of Architectural Review voted 9-0 and the Planning Commission voted 6-0 to approve them based on resident input and physical surveys.

She also says this historic district is an explicit goal of the city’s comprehensive plan.

“Allowing a second opinion poll to overturn these votes made little sense when resident input is supposed to inform the PC and BAR, not undermine their legal authority,” Galvin says. “If you don’t like the law, change it. Don’t sabotage it.”

The Martha Jefferson and Venable neighborhood associations obtained conservation district status after submitting letters of support and poll results before any BAR or Planning Commission votes, Galvin says.

“No other neighborhood association had a second poll taken after the BAR and PC had voted in favor of their conservation district designation,” she says. “To suddenly make this second poll a condition of council’s approval therefore struck me as being inconsistent and unfair. City Councilors take an oath to govern fairly and in accordance with the law.”

ANOTHER INDEPENDENT RUNS FOR CITY COUNCIL John Edward Hall has left a light footprint in the city where he’s lived for 17 years. But despite his lack of public visibility, he’s decided to run for City Council as an independent.

Hall, 66, says he’s an inventor, a design engineer and an entrepreneur. He was inspired to run by independent candidate Paul Long, whom he met on the free trolley. “That was at a time I needed 15 more signatures to get on the ballot,” says Long. “He asked how he could do that.”

The statues of generals Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson have been an issue in Charlottesville for more than a year, were the focus of a blue ribbon commission, and City Council voted to remove the stature of Lee in February. Hall says he thinks there should be a public referendum on how to handle the statues.

He’s interested in transit, and says he wants the Transit Center to have machines that give change for the 75-cent fares. The Fashion Square Mall stop needs repair and permanent benches, he adds.

He wants concrete sidewalks along streets like Stribling and Harris avenues, and says property owners should share the cost. And he supports a living wage of $12 an hour.

Long, who ran for City Council in 2009, says he asked Hall about the issues that motivated him. “He wants to bring people together,” says Long.

Hall joins independents Long, Cassie Clawson, Kenneth Jackson and Nikuyah Walker, as well as Democrats Heather Hill and Amy Laufer on the November ballot.— Lisa Provence

ity Council is expected to vote next month on a proposed Woolen Mills historic conservation district that would impose new regulations on about 85 residences and that continues to divide homeowners in the neighborhood.

“It’s pretty cut and dry that people don’t want it,” says Eric Hurt, a resident who will live in the historic overlay if it passes. “When a neighborhood association divides a neighborhood and steps onto private property, it’s bound to get heated,” he says in an email to a couple of other Woolen Mills residents.

Though the Woolen Mills Neighborhood Association originally was in favor of implementing the historic conservation district, a recent poll by the city showed that 57 percent of poll respondents living in the proposed area weren’t in favor of it, and that’s why the board pulled its support, according to chair John Frazee.

The initial poll done by the neighborhood association in May 2016 showed that 68 percent of Woolen Mills residents who responded supported the conservation district. Opponents have long argued that those originally in favor weren’t given enough information to make a proper decision, thus paving the way for the second poll.

The text for the new zoning was rewritten for clarity in February, because there were questions about what would be allowed in the historic conservation district and whether homeowners would need Board of Architectural Review approval before building structures as insignificant as birdhouses and mailboxes, Frazee says.

As it’s written now, a certificate of appropriateness will be required for all new buildings that require a building permit unless they aren’t visible from any abutting streets. Additions located to the side or front of principal structures will require approval, as will additions that are equal to or greater than 50 percent of the total gross

floor area of the existing building, or additions located on the rear of the existing structure that exceed its height or width.

Painting any previously unpainted brick or masonry will also require a certificate of appropriateness, but repainting a material other than unpainted brick or masonry is exempt. Ordinary maintenance and repairs are also exempt.

“It’s very important to note that I feel that offering the neighborhood an opportunity for the historic district was the right thing to do. I believe that the trade-off of regulation and potential cost is well offset by the protection the neighborhood gets when it comes to things like new construction and demolition,” says Frazee, who has lived in Woolen Mills for about 12 years and spent six of them on the neighborhood association board. He lives two houses outside of

Sheets did not respond to phone calls and an email from C-VILLE Weekly. His post on the fire and rescue’s Facebook page has been removed.

“It’s a shame,” says Frey. “I really like Curtis as a person.”

Most of the medical issues at the festival are heat and dehydration, says Frey, who touts the skills of Dr. Bill—UVA’s emergency medicine prof William Brady—in the MASH tent, which makes the event safer, he says.

“We’ve spent millions engaging people in Nelson County,” he says.

He adds, “We’re about safety first.”

Dandridge has “committed his life after he is released from prison” to paying the monies back in full, says the statement.

According to Lawrence, Dandridge filed for bankruptcy at the behest of the U.S. attorney and Kinder’s attorney to document the assets he has, and “not with the purpose of having any discharge” of his debts.

Her lawyer, Mark Krudys, declined to comment.

When Kinder filed her lawsuit in November 2016, she named multiple defendants, including Dandridge’s wife and father. In a response, Dandridge admitted to the swindling and insisted the other defendants had nothing to do with his unauthorized use of Kinder’s assets.

In her suit, Kinder says of the $6.9 million she entrusted to Dandridge, she’d recovered only $735,000.

In the criminal plea agreement, Dandridge agreed to repay Kinder $3.2 million. He also agreed to compensate Blue Ridge Bank $302,000 for a loan based on false financial information, and to make restitution of $118,527 to Virginia Omicron Chapter House Association. While Dandridge was president of that organization, he refinanced the Sigma Alpha Epsilon frat house on Madison Lane, which owed $204,000 on its existing mortgage, for a new $330,000 loan, funneling the excess to his personal bank account.

In a July 17 consent order in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Lynchburg, Dandridge agreed that Kinder’s $6 million claim will not be exempt in his bankruptcy filing.

“Mr. Dandridge deeply regrets his actions and the terrible consequences that they have had for his victims and others,” says his attorney, Fran Lawrence, in a statement.

Victor Dandridge III had already admitted to swindling his dead friend’s widow. In a guilty plea entered July 19 in federal court in Richmond, Dandridge owned up to defrauding Blue Ridge Bank and the company that owns the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity house as well.

Dandridge pleaded guilty to two counts of wire fraud, which each carry a maximum of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine, and one count of bank fraud, the maximum penalty for which is 30 years and a $1 million fine.

He also faced a $9 million lawsuit filed by Lynne Kinder, who alleges that after her husband died unexpectedly on New Year’s Eve 2005, Dandridge offered to manage her assets, but instead bilked her out of nearly $7 million to prop up his own failing businesses.

Dandridge owned several capital management companies, although he wasn’t licensed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission until after he joined Richmond wealth management firm Thompson Davis in 2012. He also owned Timberlake Lighting and Huntington Learning Center franchises, and said in response to Kinder’s suit

he chief of Wintergreen Fire & Rescue appears unhappy that his bid to provide emergency medical services to Lockn’ this year was not accepted, and he posted a complaint on Facebook July 18 that takes aim at Lockn’ and UVA Health System, the likely new EMS provider.

“Unfortunately, the festival has never been profitable and this year the promoters were forced to make major changes,” writes Chief Curtis Sheets. “The most significant change was to cut the scope of the event in half. Reducing the scope opened the door for other vendors to bid on the services we typically provide.”

Lockn’ organizer Dave Frey provides a different reason for the change. The fourday event this year moves from Oak Ridge estate, where it has been held the past four years, to Infinity Downs, which Frey and partner Peter Shapiro own.

This year’s August 24-27 festival doesn’t have headliners like the Dead, the Who or Bob Seeger who have taken the stage in the past, says Frey. That’s why he anticipates a smaller festival of around 15,000 instead of around 30,000. And he disputes Sheets’ allegation the event is “capped” at 15,000.

The new venue has 11 gates rather than the 37 at Oak Ridge.

“There’s no point in being overstaffed,” says Frey, and the amount of police, fire, EMS and

food should be proportionate to the number of people attending.

“Curtis turned in the same bid as last year,” says Frey.

Sheets points out that Lockn’ promised to use local contractors, and that others will suffer with the change, including the Nelson County Rescue Squad, from which Wintergreen leased ambulances. The Wintergreen squad won’t have Lockn’ income for capital expenditures, says Sheets, and the staff will lose the opportunity to earn money for “family vacations and Christmas funds.”

“Wintergreen is a for-profit EMS,” says Frey. Lockn’ will be re-engaging the Lovingston Fire Department, Nelson County Sheriff ’s Office and the Virginia State Police, he says.

In his Facebook screed, Sheets says he had “copious conversation” with UVA administration about the “inappropriateness” of expanding UVA’s special event business into rural Nelson. “UVA assured me that if invited to bid, they would waive off the opportunity because it could undermine a rural EMS system, which is a partner in the UVA network,” he writes.

ure it’s blistering hot, but for three new businesses, July was the perfect time to hang a shingle. One local pharmacist fills a void, an app from a UVA alum serves an untapped market, and a moving company franchise offers help with the heavy stuff.

Meadowbrook begats Top Notch Pharmacy

An app you’ll want to drink to A month ago, UVA alumni and CEO of Edge Tech Labs Shaun Masavage broke into a previously untapped market when he launched Happy Hour Hunter, an app designed to help you belly up to the bar without emptying your pockets.

As if you needed to be encouraged to get your drink on, Happy Hour Hunter maps out up-to-date drink specials in the user’s city. It’s one of two uses of an app called DrinkMate, which also functions as a breathalyzer if you buy an additional mouthpiece.

Though his app is the first to offer such a public drinking service, Masavage says other efforts to track happy hours, such as “an underground spreadsheet” that once circulated through Washington, D.C., have caught his eye.

“A lot of people have tried to do this before and they’ve continually failed because they don’t have a method of keeping things up to date,” he says. “The best aspect is that you can help keep deals up to date with your own edits and earn points and badges along the way. This is why we call it a ‘Wikipedia for happy hours.’”

and turning west to Charlottesville seemed like a logical step.

Partner Nathan Bocock, who also works out of Wilmington, North Carolina, attended Stone Robinson Elementary, and got his start in the moving biz working with Bryan Feldman in college. “We love the Charlottesville area and I wanted to visit more often,” he says.

Two Men currently employs between 10 and 12 people and has two trucks. The company anticipates a fleet of about 12 trucks and 50 employees in the next few years, says Rebecca Feldman.

Besides packing, loading and unloading your possessions, specialty services include moving grand pianos and hauling out furniture when a house is getting new floors, says Feldman.

And here’s a tip for new-to-the-area Two Men and a Truck: Watch out for the 14th Street bridge, which loves to eat moving vans.

For those mourning the recently closed Meadowbrook Pharmacy, its former pharmacist has opened her own independent drugstore, and it looks a lot like the old one, albeit with different ownership.

Leah Argie wanted to own her own pharmacy one day, and when she learned this spring that she would be out of a job, that timeline got pushed up a bit.

Last week Top Notch Pharmacy had a soft opening of its Preston Avenue store, which is eerily reminiscent of Meadowbrook, although maybe there are only so many independent drugstore designs.

Argie was considering candles when a reporter walked in, the “fun part” of the job, she says. Like her former place of employment, she wants to sell unusual gifts, like the toddler seersucker bow tie-and-suspenders combo, that you don’t find anywhere else.

Despite another CVS coming in on the Meadowbrook site at the corner of Barracks Road and Emmet Street, Argie thinks there’s room for an independent pharmacy like Top Notch to “fill the specialty niche no one else is doing in Charlottesville,” she says.

That includes making compound medications, such as hormone replacement

creams, gluten-free meds or carrying veterinary drugs.

And if you have multiple daily drugs, Top Notch will create blister packs to put all the morning drugs together so it’s easier to take what you need at the right time.

“That’s a service that’s hard to find,” says Argie.

Top Notch will deliver drugs, and there’s one more similarity to Meadowbrook: Argie hired several of the folks who worked there.

“People will see some familiar faces,” she says.

The coaches, he wrote, had “never been cleaned since they were first built,” and because they lacked springs, the slightest jolt was enough to dislocate a traveler’s bones. “At one time we were all flung together in a heap at the bottom of the coach,” he wrote of one day’s jaunt, “and at another we were crushing our heads against the roof. Now one side [of the carriage] was down deep in the mire. ...Now the coach...was rearing up in the air, in a frantic state. ...Never, never once, that day, was the coach in any position, attitude or kind of motion to which we are accustomed in coaches.”

Here in central Virginia, in the era before passenger trains (which first arrived in the 1850s), stagecoach travel—thanks to the area’s heavily rutted roadways—was really no better.

Visitors to Charlottesville typically came packed aboard the Fredericksburg or Richmond stage, their trunks lashed behind and on top with mud-splattered leather belts. The scenery along the route was beautiful, no doubt, but the lengthy rides must have been exhausting. In the 1820s, for example, the stagecoach trip from Richmond to Charlottesville—a distance of only 70 miles—took more than 24 hours.

What made the traveling bearable? As any 18th- or early 19th-century American excursionist would answer: It was the taverns. Built along the main stagecoach routes, inns and taverns—the names were somewhat interchangeable—provided the rest, food and beverages that the rattled riders so desperately needed. Central Virginia history is filled with stories of the region’s many famous taverns, and the wonderful events of which they were a part. Nowadays, central Virginia is graced with a number of modern-day inns and taverns—the direct lineal descendants of those long ago way stations. They, too, have stories to tell.

Love of history

According to owner/innkeeper Petrovits, today’s Silver Thatch Inn, with its seven guest rooms, is classified as a boutique hotel. “Here you can step back into history,” she says. “You can almost feel your whole persona changing to mirror these periods. There’s something that draws people back to a quieter time.”

During that “quieter time” through the mid-1800s, central Virginia boasted numerous taverns and inns. Because licenses were easily obtained—the owner merely had to promise to maintain “good rule and order”—by 1748 (just four years after its founding), Albemarle County had more than 10 such public houses.

Charlottesville’s most famous tavern was the Swan, located downtown opposite the courthouse. Built in the mid1770s by Jack Jouett Sr., it welcomed visitors to what was then a tiny backwater county seat. The owner’s son, Jack Jouett Jr., rode overnight on June 3 and 4, 1781, from Cuckoo Tavern in Louisa County to warn then-Governor Thomas Jefferson and the state legislature meeting in Charlottesville that British Lieutenant Colonel Banastre Tarleton and 250

troopers were riding hard to capture them. Most everyone, including Jefferson, escaped. Evidently some of that month’s legislative “activity” took place at the Swan because proprietor Jouett later requested compensation for damage done to his structure by the assemblymen. By the 1820s, Swan Tavern had become dilapidated. Soon thereafter it was torn down.

Our region’s countryside taverns were derisively described during the Revolution by one of the British prisoners, Major Thomas Anburey. These businesses, he wrote, “consist of a little house placed in a solitary situation in the middle of the woods, and the usual method of describing the roads is, ‘From such an ordinary house to such a one, so many miles.’

The entertainment you meet with is very poor indeed; you are seldom able to procure any other fare than eggs and bacon with Indian hoe cake, and at many of them not even that. The only liquors are peach brandy and whiskey. They are not remiss however in making pretty exorbitant charges.”

(Similar to inns and taverns, an “ordinary house” was an establishment that offered prepared meals—called “ordinaries”—at a set time of day for a set price. “Entertainment” in the 18th century didn’t refer to amusements, it meant the traveler’s basic necessities: food, drink and lodging.)

The beautiful, rambling Silver Thatch Inn sits five miles north of Charlottesville just off of Route 29. In 1997, Los Angeles-based Jim and Terri Petrovits decided to leave behind their high-pressure jobs. Also trained chefs, they wanted to run an inn and a restaurant. After stumbling across the Silver Thatch online, they purchased the property and moved here in April 1998.

“Because Jim loved everything historic,” says Terri Petrovits, “this place resonated with him. We wanted to be that country inn, a place of respite and rejuvenation, where [historically] travelers could regroup before they got back on that stagecoach.” Jim Petrovits recently passed away. Terri Petrovits, who wants to pursue her love of baking—she says she enjoys making “anything with butter and sugar and cream”—is now selling the 8,000-square-foot commercial property.

The inn’s original structure—a two-story log cabin—was built in 1780 during the American Revolution by Hessian prisoners of war. (They were part of British Major General John “Gentleman Johnny” Burgoyne’s army that had surrendered at Saratoga, New York, in October 1777. Having marched more than 600 miles to Albemarle County, this 4,000-man force—half of which was Hessian, German mercenaries—staggered into their nearby Ivy Creek prisoner encampment known as “the Barracks” in January 1779.)

Appropriately called the Hessian Room, this sturdy cabin is now covered in clapboards. An amazing portal to the past, it contains wall cutouts so that the massive original chestnut logs can be viewed.

The English Room, now the inn’s center section, was attached in 1812 and once served as a boys school. Decorated in period colors, deep greens and burgundies, it features hunting images and a large mahogany sideboard. Above it is the Jefferson Room, Silver Thatch’s oldest guest room.

“These two oldest sections, the 1780 and the 1812, were built so well,” says Petrovits, “that they’ve given us no issues over the years. They’re wonky because they’ve settled, but they’ve got so much character.”

After serving as part of a tobacco plantation, then a melon farm and finally a dairy farm, these structures were purchased in 1937 by Dr. B.F.D. “Dean” Runk, who taught at the University of Virginia. Runk attached two bedrooms and the

On the eastern side of Charlottesville, on Route 53, visitors to our area have been experiencing a Southern specialty since the late 1960s—Michie Tavern’s famous fried chicken. But that wasn’t how the buffet-style meal got started. “When my mother and stepfather [Josephine and M. Joseph Conte] first started in 1968,” says executive director Greg MacDonald, “they knew nothing about food. Their first attempt at Southern food was Brunswick stew as the main entrée. That lasted about a month. It wasn’t particularly good, so they switched to fried chicken.” Nowadays, in high season, he says, “we average a pound of chicken per guest. We can go through about 600 pounds of chicken a day.”

“We’ve been doing the same themed meal for 48 years and it still works,” he continues. “We don’t try to be all things to all people. We have modified it a bit because people are eating a little healthier nowadays; we’ve added pulled pork, baked chicken.” Once guests pass through the buffet line, their second helpings are brought to them by servers in period costume. “We pride ourselves on our service,” says MacDonald. “We think the food tastes even better when the service is good.”

Michie Tavern sits perched on the western slope of Carter’s Mountain, the eminence that overlooks Monticello. The view to the west over Charlottesville is superb, and particularly striking at night. William Michie—a former Continental Army corporal—built Michie Tavern alongside Buck

Mountain Road, about 17 miles northwest of its present location, in the early 1780s. His father, “Scotch” John Michie, had bequeathed him the property, fed by a natural spring.

Michie received his tavern-keeping license in 1784.

“The two-story inn featured an upstairs Assembly Room,” wrote Cindy Conte, Michie Tavern’s curator, in a tavern recipe book. “This expansive space served as the social center of the tavern, as well as for the whole countryside.” It was big enough for dances and church services, but traveling magicians and itinerant doctors and dentists made use of the space as well, sharing their profits with the innkeeper.

The large tavern later served, she wrote, “as a post office and makeshift school.” By the Civil War, however, thanks in part to the newfangled railroads, stagecoach travel and, thus, tavern business, had greatly fallen off. The rapidly aging Michie Tavern was sold out of the Michie family in 1910.

Enter Josephine Henderson, whom Conte calls “a pioneer in the preservation movement.” In 1927, Henderson, a local businesswoman, purchased Michie Tavern with the idea of establishing it as a museum for her large collection of antiques. To take advantage of Albemarle’s rapidly growing tourist trade—Monticello had just opened for visitation— Henderson moved Michie Tavern to Carter Mountain. To facilitate this 17-mile journey by truck and horse-drawn wagon, the old building elements were dismantled and numbered. The tavern was not exactly reconstructed, however.

Some parts were not rebuilt, and some previous stand-alone outbuildings were now attached.

Opened as a museum in 1928, Michie Tavern was awarded status as a Virginia historic landmark thanks in large measure to Henderson’s efforts. She sold the property in 1932 to local architect and preservationist Milton Grigg, who in turn sold it to the Contes in 1968.

Nowadays, visitors can enjoy their Southern-style lunch, served in the Ordinary, then take a guided tour of Michie Tavern. “We just love telling the story of 18th-century taverns,” says MacDonald. “The average person doesn’t know about their significance.”

“We take folks through the oldest section,” says Conte.

property in 2003 from the Livers family, who’d owned it since 1915. Known historically as the Heiskell-Livers townhouse, the Federal-style structure was built in either 1817 or 1822 by Alexander St. Clair Heiskell. “We remodeled in 2003 to open it as a B&B,” says Hubbard.

“An old building is a challenge,” he says, referring to all of the maintenance required, “but this house tells us stories.”

It was designed by James Dinsmore, the Irish-born master carpenter who, summoned from Philadelphia by Jefferson himself, created much of the elegant woodwork at Monticello, Jefferson’s home. Working out of Monticello’s carpentry shop on Mulberry Row, Dinsmore also trained his enslaved assistant, John Hemmings (Sally Hemings’s younger brother, whose name is traditionally spelled with two “m’s”), who became a highly skilled joiner. Dinsmore left Monticello in 1809 to work at Montpelier in Orange County, the home of then-President James Madison. He subsequently worked under architect Benjamin H. Latrobe in Washington, D.C.—after the British burned most of the public buildings in 1814—and at the University of Virginia.

“This house is a standing testament to [Dinsmore’s] craftsmanship and legacy,” reads the inn’s website. “And you know,” adds Hubbard, “that when UVA was under construction [between 1817 and 1826], Jefferson frequently rode right by.

You know he stopped here!”

Hubbard and Jones are almost finished with a second remodeling. “We took down a 20th century two-story porch,” Hubbard explains, that had been attached to its eastern edge. “The new building [in its place] will be a café called the Farm Belt Kitchen.” Upstairs are two brand-new guest rooms with balconies.

“We’ve also added a granite terrace out back,” says Jones.

During this recent remodeling, numerous old everyday items were discovered in the attic and in the walls. Now shadow-boxed in the hallway, these wonderful found objects include a little child’s cotton petticoat, cut nails, clay marbles and a check from the 1850s.

The new Dinsmore House—at 7,500 square feet—features nine guest rooms. “All of which have private baths, not customary in the 1800s,” says Jones. It’s furnished and decorated in a wonderful combination of old and new. One of the bathrooms, for example, boasts a large bathtub with ball-and-claw legs. The loft bedroom—accessed by ascending past the building’s monstrous 14-by-14-inch center beam—features an exposed brick wall and a large bed beneath an intriguing birdcage-style chandelier.

“It’s a big moment for us to reimagine this house and to start entertaining,” says Hubbard. It’s now a “boutique inn,” and to Hubbard that connotes a certain level of service and amenities. “We have fewer rooms,” he says, “but we have the most comfortable beds, the most comfortable robes. We’re catering to the experiential traveler.”

father, Peter), a tilt-top tea table and a one-of-a-kind tap bar, almost like a service window. It allowed guests and servants to be served beverages outside on the porch.

“Our tours are inviting, flexible and hands-on,” says Conte. “We do a Colonial dance in the Assembly Room—we get the visitors involved. We play tavern games. The kids can get dressed up in 18th century-style garb and get their photos taken. Locals can always tour free of charge.

“We also tell them about 18th-century travelers,” she says.

“One story is about a traveler from France who stayed in a crowded Virginia tavern. That night he was forced to sleep across two chairs that kept separating. People gamed in his room all through the night and kept waking him up. I’m sure he went back home and said, ‘Don’t go to the British colonies, they’re a bunch of heathens over there!’”

Preserving the past

some of the men working on the hotel, in the 20th century it served as the offices of the local newspaper, The Greene County Record. Now it contains two of the Lafayette’s guest rooms. The other guest space is the Main Street-facing twostory brick building known as Dicey’s Cottage. According to the Greene County Historical Society, this was the slave quarters for a Miss Dicey—her first name now unknown— and perhaps other enslaved African-Americans.

Two of the main building’s second-story guest rooms are accessed via a marvelous wraparound veranda. “All of the rooms have private entrances and bathrooms,” says Pyles.

“This one,” he continues, “has taupe-colored walls with a wine-colored bedspread and green accents. All the guest rooms are named after Virginia-born presidents.” This particular room sports a bust of Jefferson on the mantel. “The dining room is named after James Madison,” he says, “because our daughter went to JMU.” Long known simply as the Lafayette Hotel, the Pyleses changed the name to include “inn and restaurant” because they believe it better defines their business. Though only open three days, the restaurant takes up a lot of their time.

“This is the kind of restaurant Kaye and I like to eat in,” says Pyles, also head chef. “Uber-fancy isn’t what we really wanted. I said this a lot in the beginning, but it still holds true: ‘If I can’t spell it or I can’t pronounce it, we’re not serving it.’” The fare, which the Pyleses call “sophisticated Southern,” includes Lafayette shrimp and grits, Baltimore-style crab cakes and, for lunch, the Montpelier double burger.

entral Virginia’s modern-day taverns and inns are merely following in the footsteps of those essential 18th- and 19th-century establishments. For the jostled and road-weary visitors of those days, the inns and taverns offered the only creature comforts available. Some of these guests just needed a good night’s rest. Others came to slough off the cold and pass an evening behind a tankard of ale. Sometimes the accommodations were rough, and sometimes the hoecakes and eggs went down hard. Those long-ago taverns were a hotbed of commerce, news and social interaction, however, and they left us a legacy rich and fascinating.

Twenty miles north of Charlottesville—and standing three stories high with a fourth-story cupola—the Lafayette Inn & Restaurant is the tallest structure in downtown Stanardsville. The Federal-style brick structure was built circa 1840 by a prominent local citizen, William Pritchett, as a robust and lucrative stagecoach stop. The Lafayette faces what was then the Spotswood Trail, today’s Business Route 33, which a few miles west conquers the Blue Ridge Mountains via Swift Run Gap before descending into the beautiful Shenandoah Valley. This was an important byway connecting the central Piedmont with the valley of Virginia.

Alan and Kaye Pyles from Fairfax, Virginia, purchased the property in 2005. For years they owned an Internet-based real-estate training company. They sold that and bought the Lafayette as, says Alan Pyles, “our second career, our semiretirement.” It includes a restaurant open three days a week— Friday, Saturday and Sunday—and six guest rooms (three of which are in the main building). He says the buying decision was easy: “If it had been smaller we would have had to do everything, if it was much bigger we’d be running a hotel.” He says he loves the business. “The building’s got its own charm.

It’s got creaks in the floor, but it’s also recession-proof: Nobody can come in and supplant me as the old place in town.”

Extremely sturdy, the Lafayette’s exterior walls are made of three courses of brick. The spacious interior, once heated by 12 fireplaces, features a large central hall and stairway, with rooms on either side. The first floor—today’s restaurant and tavern room—originally housed both a saloon and a general store. The entire second floor served as a ballroom, while the third floor was the Pritchett family’s home. The fourth-story cupola offers a magnificent view all around. Above it hung a bell that rang to announce meetings and meals.

Alongside the Lafayette stands a small two-story brick structure that was constructed first, in 1820. Built to house

hat do cowboys, farmers and love triangles have in common with the United States of today? To Michelle Krisel, artistic director of Charlottesville Opera, the answer is a lot.

That’s much of the reason why Krisel and Charlottesville Opera (formerly Ash Lawn Opera), chose Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Oklahoma! to close the company’s 40th summer season.

“This piece is so important at this time for our country to come together,” says Krisel. “This is about farmers and the cowboys coming together to build a community,” noting that the musical takes place in the years before Oklahoma became an official state in 1907. “This is not ancient history.

The issues that they were struggling with— coming up with their identity as a state, respecting the individual but building the community—is what makes America great.”

To open the opera’s 40th anniversary season, the company presented Middlemarch in Spring in collaboration with the Virginia Festival of the Book. It was the company’s first premiere in 35 years. Earlier this month, the Charlottesville Opera performed Rigoletto on the Paramount mainstage and at Virginia Tech’s Anne and Ellen Fife Theater.

During Oklahoma! professional soloists and students from the Charlottesville Ballet will join actors and actresses. Together, these artists bring to life Oklahoma! main character Laurey’s opiate-induced dream ballet.

Krisel says creating these artistic partnerships built the foundation for the opera’s anniversary season. During her tenure as general director and artistic director, Krisel focused on collaborating with entities such as the Festival of the Book, Virginia universities and colleges and their students, and like-minded arts groups like the Oratorio Society of Virginia, the Wilson School of Dance and the Virginia Consort.

It’s a memorable season for Krisel, as she recently announced her retirement. She’s stepping down after nearly a decade growing the Charlottesville Opera, and prior to that she built a number of international education and community programs from the ground up at the Washington National Opera. Krisel says she’s excited about the season’s new artistic endeavors.

“I conceived of the three pieces in our anniversary season as a way to make new friends through community-building, and each in a different way,” Krisel says. “I picked the repertoire by what I think the public will

like, what we can do well and what we can afford to do but, more importantly, what can that piece do for us?”

Another of the opera’s relatively new partnerships is with Mary Birnbaum, a theater and opera director who directed La Traviata last year and returned this year to direct Oklahoma!.

room. She graduated from Harvard and L’École Internationale de Théâtre Jacques Lecoq in Paris—a prestigious movement and mime school whose tradition stems from Italian commedia dell’arte. She now lives in New York, co-writes and directs productions around the world and teaches acting at Juilliard.

Birnbaum “begged” Krisel to let her direct Oklahoma!, citing the timeliness of the musical’s story, the strength of Krisel’s artistic leadership and the cast’s “brilliant” talent.

“If you scratch the surface of an opera singer, how did we fall in love with opera?”

Krisel says of finding the musical’s talented cast and crew. “We sang in our high school or high school musical. What is our national vernacular? It’s the American musical.”

“I don’t get to do musicals a lot, and had a sense that I needed to work on a musical this summer,” Birnbaum says. “Musicals are American opera, and [Oklahoma!] features our greatest composer and librettist.”

To materialize Rodgers & Hammerstein’s first collaboration as an artistic duo, Birnbaum kept the set sparse. As an audience member, Birnbaum says she never finds theatrical representations of the outdoors realistic, and wants her pared-down set to emanate feelings of unity, transformation and community engagement.

Birnbaum and her cast play around a lot to understand the dynamics of characters and how they “fought tooth and nail to get everything they have.” They explore feelings of deep political unrest, the shifting grounds that ensue from a disrupted status quo and discuss what it means to be American.

“In a time where you can have a hit like Hamilton, musical storytelling clearly isn’t dead,” Birnbaum says. “It’s about the art you make, whether it’s inclusive and involves the community. That’s the way the arts will continue to flourish and have meaning in people’s lives.”

n his essay titled “The Decay of Lying,” published in 1891, Oscar Wilde famously wrote that “life imitates art far more than art imitates life.” The Wild Reeds (in town on July 31) experienced this concept firsthand when they were filming the music video for “Only Songs,” the first single off their sophomore album, The World We Built. In the video, band member Mackenzie Howe’s guitar is stolen out of her car and the group embarks on a whimsical money-making spree to buy it back when it winds up at a nearby yard sale.

Ironically, Howe’s car was actually broken into on the first day of the video shoot.

(Luckily, she didn’t lose her guitar.) Despite the situation’s obvious downside, the band used Howe’s smashed car window to its advantage, incorporating it into the opening sequence of the video to set the scene of the fictional break-in. The incident is indicative of the world the L.A. quintet has built over half a decade—one where the show must go on, mutual support is crucial and every opportunity can be seized for good.

The Wild Reeds’ Sharon Silva and Kinsey Lee began playing music together in college, with Howe joining them a few years later. Drummer Nick Jones and bassist Nick Phakpiseth form the rhythm section, rounding out the lineup. Silva, Lee and Howe take turns singing lead but have no problem pulling out killer harmonies when the song calls for it.

“The girls had always incorporated harmony in the band, so when I joined we had to work hard on our blend, seeing as we all have very different voices,” Howe says.

The title of The World We Built is a nod to the way The Wild Reeds navigated some

of the hurdles it faced coming up as a band fronted by three women.

“We didn’t have a theme for the record going into it but after recording and seeing which songs made the cut, we noticed a few themes: empowerment, disillusionment and generally what it means to be women in 2017,” says Howe. “Being committed to a group of five people for the last five years has taught all of us about how important it is to make sure our little unit is healthy and loving and communicative—our own ‘little world,’ if you will.

Because we are all we’ve got for weeks at a time in a very exhausting industry. But the record also refers to the macro world we live in, and the challenges we face to be understood, or often misunderstood, as artists trying to whole-heartedly pursue music.”

The collection of songs on the record was narrowed down from a larger batch of more than 20, with each one serving as a testament to the strength of their individual songwriting.

“All three of us girls write songs somewhat separately and then bring them to each other for help,” Howe says. “After that we start working on the full band version, and the boys sprinkle their magic in there, so the process has a few stages.”

Thematically, The World We Built deals with preconceived notions and how they change—who you thought you were or what you thought you knew may not necessarily hold up over time.

“Inevitably, over the three-year gap from our last record to our new one, we’ve all changed,” Howe says. “Seeing the whole country, and being pushed to your limits physically and emotionally can reveal these kinds of things to you in strange ways, but in the end you’re better for it.”

very sunny morning during the summertime, I wake up and stare at the light-soaked leaves outside my window and feel a rush of joy. At a time when most of us could stand a bit of brightness, the sun showers us with one of the happiest forces on earth.

Nature’s hot-weather celebration is the subject of two exhibitions currently on display at Les Yeux de Monde. “Summer Perspectives” and “More Light” each showcase three artists whose complementary works reveal radiance in the abstract.

Isabelle Abbot, who shares “Summer Perspectives” with Sarah Boyts Yoder and Cate West Zahl, explores micro and macro landscapes. In an email, she writes, “Typically, I paint the long view, trying to capture the depth and movement of the land here in Virginia. But for this show I did several pieces that are up-close on different types of local vegetation that I think are particularly symbolic of this area.”

For Yoder, the creation of ambiguous and painterly abstract works is an opportunity to expand not just our understanding of place but our reaction to unfamiliar experience.

She writes: “What if we could see that middle space [between familiarity and strangeness] as joyful and open rather than as a frustration? As a place to relax, look around, ask questions, make connections with each other and ourselves? If we can practice being there our imaginations expand, empathy grows. That’s the point of all art.”

Zahl explains that she does not intentionally explore greater meaning in her whimsical, linear works. She focuses on the process as a form of problem solving, in this case taking inspiration from photos of Oklahoma farmland regions taken from airplanes. “I liked the delineations of land and flatness of these aerial views,” she writes.

“The paintings are called ‘flatscapes.’”

In “More Light,” Karen Blair seeks to share the “sheer awe” she feels when she looks at the world. By choosing to distill local landscapes into shapes, marks and colors, “it becomes a challenge to give more to the viewer than just a two-dimensional representation of a three-dimensional scene,” she writes.

“What about wind, heat and cold, birdsong and the taste of iron filings on the tongue in heavy fog? I constantly search for ways to infuse the paintings with this information.”

If Blair seeks to create an emotional impact, Argentina native Ana Rendich paints to extrapolate her own. Her bright, vivid work in “More Light” focuses on concepts such as sanctuary, social change and the never-ending pursuit of happiness.

Townsend, too, considers art-making to be a meditative, therapeutic process. “I paint what I see and feel,” she writes. Immersing herself in inspirational places, she absorbs the movement and color and light of the moment.

“I get to do what I love and I get to reexamine the places that inspired me,” she writes. And, as local art-viewers likewise discover, “I often find things I hadn’t noticed when I was there.”

ong Joon-ho is back once again with Okja, a parable that goes to stylistic extremes to make an existential argument, broadcasting the film’s central metaphor from the very first scene while being far more emotionally and politically trenchant than anticipated. Snowpiercer could have been a straightforward action/sci-fi yarn, but in his hands, it becomes a cautionary tale of the dangers of being right while the larger questions go unasked. With Okja, the story of a girl who befriends a creature intended for consumption rather than companionship, Bong seizes the opportunity to go beyond straightforward animal welfare to all of factory farming, the inheritance of unwanted traditions and the transparent attempts by mega-corporations to put on a friendly face while remaining exploitative.

The film centers on the relationship between a young Korean girl Mija (Ahn Seohyun) and a so-called super pig named Okja.

Super pigs are the creation of the Mirando Corporation under the auspices of CEO Lucy Mirando, who started the program to counteract the company’s bad image and ostensibly solve the issue of food shortage due to the world’s booming population. To

help facilitate the PR recovery, farmers from around the world were selected to raise super pigs and compete in a pageant after 10 years, hosted by superstar TV zoologist Johnny Wilcox (Jake Gyllenhaal).

The trouble begins when Mija is coaxed into believing she would travel to New York with Okja, when in fact her super pig best friend is taken away while she is distracted by her grandfather. She daringly races from the Korean countryside to Seoul, the staging area before Okja is ultimately brought to New York. It is while Okja is in transit from Mirando HQ in Seoul that she encounters the Animal Liberation Front led by Jay (Paul Dano). They are an exceedingly polite band of not terrorists, who begin their rescue operation with pleasantries, requesting Okja’s escorts wear seatbelts before the chaos ensues.

With the assistance of the ALF’s translator, K (Steven Yuen), Jay informs Mija of their plan to liberate Okja and all of the other super pigs in New York, that Mirando’s humane face is just a ploy to hide the horrific truth of the entire project.

Those familiar with Bong’s previous work will be well-aware of his fondness for heightened reality, which can often feel lighthearted but is used to deliver a direly serious message. Some call this tonal in-

Newer to the NoVa scene is Paradise Springs. Located at the site of a once famous mineral springs, the winery displays antique water bottles with “paradise” etched on them. In particular, the Paradise Springs viognier is worth seeking out.

How is the 2017 harvest shaping up in NoVa? Vineyard consultant Lucie Morton works with wines around the state and says it looks like “everyone dodged most of the bullets, like late spring frost and rain in May and June.” But winemakers are still waiting

ere in Charlottesville, there’s great enthusiasm for our local wines.

The Monticello AVA (American Viticultural Area) loyalty is so hyper-local, in fact, it’s easy to forget there are wineries in other parts of the state. This week, I put down my glass of Crosé to explore another Virginia wine region: Northern Virginia, nicknamed NoVa. If you looked at a map and combined Northern Virginia with the Monticello AVA, you’d be looking at a large chunk of land where the majority of wineries in the state operate. In this belly of the Virginia wine industry, though the region may look unified on a map, the Monticello area is more associated with the James River Basin while NoVa is influenced by the Potomac and the Rappahannock river basins. The main soil types are a little different, too, with red clay dominating much of the Monticello and various residual sedimentary soils making up many NoVa soils. In NoVa, you will also find outcroppings and swaths of greenstone and granite, which are coveted soils for grape growing.

The two regions also receive different weather. Atlantic storms rolling up the East Coast hit Roanoke, glide by Richmond and continue straight through to Charlottesville.

Northern Virginia has Maryland and the Chesapeake Bay to the east, which help buffer the region against harsh weather.

You can point to the genesis of NoVa’s wine industry at Linden Vineyards, where Jim Law has made bellwether Virginia wines since 1983. His flagship, the Hardscrabble red blend, and Hardscrabble chardonnay are both meticulously farmed at his home

vineyard. Law’s wines are regularly acclaimed by various wine experts as some of Virginia’s great wines.

“I have always wanted to sneak a Linden Hardscrabble chardonnay into a blind tasting of top white Burgundy—I think it would show well and fit in perfectly,” says Kevin Sidders, of VinConnect.

Nearby at Glen Manor Vineyards, winemaker Jeff White is enthusiastic about his new site with steep slopes. The soil on this part of his family’s fifth-generation farm is very rocky, he says, with “mainly granite and greenstone, and it’s extremely well drained.”

That soil type mixed with steep slopes translates to excellent tasting in the glass.

White’s elegant sauvignon blanc is a favorite among folks in the local industry. “I love the sauvignon blanc from Glen Manor,” says Blenheim Vineyards winemaker Kirsty Harmon. White also makes a late-harvest petit manseng named Rapheus, which has a nice balance of sugar and acid.

Rutger de Vink’s RdV Vineyards in Delaplane focuses on two labels of red Bordeaux-style wine. Classic and powerful, they are as tasty as they are notoriously expensive, but RdV also makes an affordable Friends and Family red that you can find in select restaurants. The vineyard is on a unique granite hillside that could come to be one of Virginia’s great sites.

Both White and de Vink spent time working with Law, which highlights how Law’s influence and guidance has helped anchor NoVa’s fine wine community. Boxwood Winery, planted at the site of an 18th century horse farm, specializes in Bordeauxstyle red blends of which it produces three, as well as a rosé. It recently added a sauvignon blanc to its portfolio. The Boxwood wines have a visceral deliciousness to them, and they are a great value in comparison to

Tiffany Davie, owner and chef of Miss Tiff ’s Catering (and also known as the “Macaroni and Cheese Queen”) is doing a trial run of her Spanish, soul food and Caribbean eats at The Ante Room.

“It’s still young, [but] we’ve been getting really great responses,” she says. “It may work, it may not, but it’s a great location, great exposure and connection to the people in Charlottesville.”

Her famous mac ’n’ cheese is on the menu, of course, along with fried chicken and international dishes like jerk chicken.

The same fare can also be found on her catering menu.

“This is what I love to do; this is a Godgiven gift,” she says.

Sweet practice Local acupuncturist and chiropractor Dr. Doug Cox is healing with honey. A selfdescribed “novice beekeeper,” he started his hives three years ago to produce honey to sell to the public; proceeds will go to the Virginia chapter of the Wounded Warrior Project. His business is Hero Honey, a name his active-duty son-in-law suggested.

This is the first time Cox is donating the honey, because it takes about three years for the hives to produce enough nectar.

He’s also gotten other local beekeepers to donate their honey to the cause.

He will start selling Hero Honey out of his office the second week in August. He has about 20 orders so far, but there’s a limit of one bottle per customer.

“I’m going to sell out immediately,” he says.

magine making a reservation for a seat at a movie theater, knowing that your meal could match the movie you’re watching—and it’s all delivered to you. That reality exists at Alamo Drafthouse at 5th Street Station, which opened July 20.

The theater features seven screens, with rocking theater seats and recliners. Reservations and walk-ins are welcome, but make sure to arrive a half-hour before the show. A waiter greets moviegoers to take food and drink orders, and continues to serve you throughout the film.

Creative Manager James Sanford says that when he first joined the Austin, Texasbased company he was surprised.

“My jaw literally dropped when I opened the menu...you could get just about anything you wanted,” he says.

Popular dishes include the banh-mi hot dog, shrimp po’ boy and the Southwestern tofu quinoa salad. Alamo uses local ingredients from vendors such as Cavalier Produce, Shenandoah Joe and Albemarle Baking Company. The menu also includes milkshakes (adult and kid-friendly) and a cocktail and beer list from its bar, Glass Half Full. Sanford says about 80 percent of the beers are Virginian, including Devils Backbone Brewing Company, South Street Brewery, Hardywood and more, with rotating taps.

He says Alamo Drafthouse isn’t looking to replace Violet Crown Cinema, it’s just offering another option for dinner theater.

“So much of our food is not just there as an accessory; it’s actually tied into the film and connects cocktails [and] menus with movies,” Sanford says. “The food be-

comes just as much a part of the evening as the film.”

Clinical Trials Mindfulness in Pregnancy

Men and women over the age of 30 needed for hip osteoarthritis study. This is a study of an investigational injection for hip osteoarthritis. The purpose is to see if an investigational hip injection is safe and/or effective when used for osteoarthritis.This study requires a screening exam, a baseline hip injection of either an investigational device or saline, and 5 follow up visits over 6 months.Compensation is $350 ($50 x 7 visits).

Pregnant women with a BMI ≥ 30 are needed for participation in a study on mindfulness and healthy eating.

Participation includes up to 16 study visits over 38 weeks, beginning in early pregnancy to 6 weeks postpartum. Sessions last 60-90 minutes and may include meditation, healthy eating discussion and diet recall (remembering food intake over 24 hours). Other study procedures include blood draw and BMI measurement.

I feel like it’s a very twosided coin because without police the rally could have become very problematic. A lot of people think the police were there to protect the KKK, but I think it was also to protect us as well. Unfortunately, it then diverged into craziness that was excessive and unnecessary. I feel saddened by extreme hate to police because they were just doing their job. I’m sure it was very hard for them to take an unbiased position in this and just do their job.

Police did an excellent job/prevented a riot.

Lots of those protesting the rally were not even from C’ville. You can’t talk about stopping “hate,” then throw water bottles, pepper gel, and spit on police and try to break through their lines. Why did you go there in the first place? Just plain stupid.

I’m of the mind that it would have been nice to have a less militarized police force there. I understand the fear that might have led to the militarization, but I read the article and the best way to deal with tumultuous crowds and anger and hate that comes into your town is less militarization.
