Come together If you’ve just started planning your wedding, you’re probably coming to grips with one fact: There’s a lot to think about (the venue, the photographer, the food, the place settings...) and maybe you’re wondering if you can do it alone. Here’s a secret: You can’t. In fact, no one can. That’s why there are wedding planners, day-of coordinators and, most importantly, family and friends. Each of the weddings in this issue’s feature (p.41) required help—mothers, cousins, sisters, fathers and friends pitched in to get the job done. And that makes sense. Your wedding is just one day, but the marriage is forever and, ultimately, it’s those loved ones who will be lending support forever. One of the brides featured in this issue recalled a part of the wedding that meant so much to her: She and her soon-to-be husband passed their rings through the crowd during the ceremony so they could be “warmed” with well wishes (pg.86) The crowd was so committed to the job that they held up the vows. Now that’s a labor of love.—Caite White Weddings, a supplement to C-VILLE Weekly, is distributed all over Charlottesville, Albemarle County and the Shenandoah Valley. WEDDING PLANNER The “OMG I’m getting married!” Phase

One year before

Work out your budget. Know your limit before considering much else. ✓ Set a tentative date for your wedding. Decide on your wedding style and formality. This may be determined, in part, by how many guests you want to invite, so think about the guest list now, too. Settle on a ceremony location. Put down a deposit for the reception location. ✓ Begin the search for other wedding vendors (transportation, flowers, invitations, music, makeup artist), starting with photographers and videographers. Once you’ve chosen your wedding photographer, schedule an engagement photo session. Start shopping for wedding rings. Reserve your officiant. If your reception venue doesn’t have a caterer, decide who’ll provide the food and book a tasting. Choose a rehearsal dinner location. Shop for a dress. It may seem too soon, but it can take several months for your dress to arrive, and it may require alterations. After you’ve found the perfect gown, schedule fittings and a delivery date. Choose your bridal party and invite them to be part of your special day.

Nine months before ✓ Start finalizing the guest list and

gathering addresses. Register for gifts. If there is a groom, decide to rent or purchase attire for him and the groomsmen. Once that’s decided, place your order. Finalize all the vendors and secure your wedding date by putting down deposits. Select the bridesmaids’ gowns. These’ll take a few months to come in, too. Send out save the dates.

Scheduling conflicts For the budget-minded, Friday weddings are a ‘do’

Best day ever Each year, C-VILLE Weekly asks readers to choose the best things about Charlottesville—from swimming hole to steak. In the most recent Best of C-VILLE issue, we added a new category: Weddings. We asked local brides to tell us, if they could do it all again (if only!), whom would they entrust with their special day? Behold, the results. WEDDING PLANNER

ou’re engaged (congrats!) and have decided that Charlottesville is the perfect place for your wedding (great choice!). You’ve even started picturing yourself as an autumn bride at a local vineyard. Then you talk to an event coordinator and find out the venue has a two-year waitlist for Saturdays and a budget-blowing price tag (yikes!). You don’t have to go back to the drawing board for your big day plans. Just go back a day—to Friday. “When I meet with a couple and learn that budget is their No. 1 concern or stressor, I always begin the conversation of Friday and Sunday nights,” says Christy Cormons, director of catering at Farmington Country Club. “At first they are reluctant and say, ‘It’s every bride’s dream to be married on a Saturday in June,’ but when the reality of the budget starts setting in and they see the savings, it’s a lot easier to reconsider.”

Having worked with brides for 16 years, Cormons has noticed an increase in Friday weddings. It’s no surprise when you see the numbers. She estimates that couples getting married on a Friday at Farmington could save between $6,0007,000, which is about the cost of 75 additional guests or an open bar for 150 people. “Of course, a Friday wedding isn’t for everyone. If your budget is healthy and you want to follow the traditional schedule then you should do what’s most important to you,” says Cormons. Once you start to prioritize, you might find that the day of the week isn’t as important to you as the time of year, or booking a certain band for the reception. “Your party is just as fun, your guests are just as excited to celebrate and you are just as married afterwards,” says Cormons.—Whitney Ayres Kenerly

NINE MONTHS BEFORE: START FINALIZING THE GUEST LIST

C-VILLE Weddings’ resident etiquette queen, Candy Girl, answers... I just started hanging out with a new friend. Should I invite her to my wedding? Is that weird? We’ve all been there—the nervous giggles, the pounding heart, the wondering if they feel the same way about fashion trends (honestly, those are just blankets worn as scarves). Candy Girl’s talking, of course, about those fluttering feelings of a new friendship. Making friends as an adult is notoriously difficult, so when you find someone you click with, it’s easy to want to enmesh them as quickly as possible in your social life, but in a totally relaxed, normal, human way. And what better way to capture, er, entice them, then to literally hand them an invitation to the most important event on your horizon? Or, is inviting this budding bestie to your wedding too much? And, alternatively, is not inviting your friendly coworker of the last five years rude? For dos and don’ts, Candy Baby turned to event planner Dickie Morris Wright of Just a Little Ditty. “It’s important to think about your guest group as a circle of people closest to you,” she says. “So, if you’ve got a new friend who means a lot to you and you believe will play a role in

17

your future, then by all means, invite them. Allow yourself to follow your gut, and just know that feelings will get hurt.” So, obligation invites are out (sorry Toby from HR!). And while you can’t put a price on friendship, you can certainly put a price on the roast beef entrée. Starting your planning with a budget along with a guest list, as Wright does, can help you more quickly decide whom you love enough to see on your perfect day that you would happily pay to have them there. Once they’re there, you can make your new pal feel welcome (and likely to come back for more after your big day) with extra touches that even your oldest friends will appreciate. Dickie recommends yard games or an interactive snack/ drinks station during your cocktail hour to help break the ice between guests, and a thoughtful seating chart to get everyone settled in. “You could take it one step further and write a note in each guest’s place card,” Wright says. “For example, ‘Kate, you’re next to George because he also volunteered in Ghana after college’.” DIY cocktails, punched-up place cards and a seriously killer evening? This friendship is totally in the bag.

WEDDING PLANNER The “There’s still so much to do!” Phase

Jessica and Dontrelle tied the knot April 26, 2016, at the University of Virginia Chapel, followed by a reception at The Local.

Six months before

Prepare all maps and directions for the ceremony and reception. Meet with your florist and choose arrangements for the ceremony and reception, as well as bouquets.

✓ If your caterer doesn’t provide one,

order your wedding cake.

Begin doing research for your marriage license.

Meet with both sets of parents to coordinate their day-of attire.

Reserve accommodations for out-oftown guests. (Consider doing this even earlier if you’re planning a wedding on busy in-town weekends like homecoming or during other local events that draw a crowd.)

✓ Order invitations.

Start thinking about honeymoon destinations.

Four months before

Address and send out your invitations and announcements. Include information regarding the accommodations. (Also consider creating a website with all of the accommodation information. Guests might like to get a head start on making those arrangements and most hotels close your block four weeks out.) Arrange for final dress fittings.

Purchase wedding guest book.

f you’re planning a wedding, there’s no better way to give guests a hint of the tone of your big day than with the invitations (and the save the dates). Rock Paper Scissors’ owners Dani Antol and Heather McNulty Haynie say that when they meet with clients, they take into account every detail: flowers, table settings, linens, lighting and even attire—anything that can serve as design inspiration for the invites. “If someone wants to go bold either with color or typography, I would hope it would not only marry with the personal style of the couple, but also with the venue and the look and feel for the event,” Antol says. It can be a bit of a disconnect, the shop owners say, if the invitations are bold and daring and the actual wedding is traditional—or even rustic. But there are ways to fuse the two visions. “Oftentimes we’ll find ways to tease the senses with a mostly traditional invitation but add pops of color or surprise in an envelope liner or edge stain color,” says Antol. Our pick for going graphic? Geometric designs incorporate clean lines with a bit of visual interest and style. Here are a few ways to do it right.—Caite White

Among the many details you’ll have to decide on when it comes to your wedding day, there’s one important one that should never be overlooked: cake! From bold color to deceptively simple, here are a few local choices we’re digging (into).—Caite White

Go big This eight-tier from Maliha Creations featured vanilla butter cake with a strawberry jam schmear with vanilla buttercream and lemon cake with two layers of raspberry buttercream and one layer of lemon curd. “I’m guessing it was 3.5' tall,” says chief baking officer Anita Gupta.

PARIS LEVINOVITZ GAYLE DRIVER

Bold choice Inspired by the work of Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer, this black cake interplays darkness and light. “A black cake makes a lot of impact,” says creator Paris Levinovitz. “It’s very unexpected, but still seems classic.”

So fly Fondant birds and a gum paste flower adorn this glitter-and-gold confection from Passion Flower Cakes. “It’s a really romantic little cake,” says owner Paris Levinovitz.

Some couples know that dessert needs to be a highlight of their wedding, for other couples it’s more like icing on the, well, you know. No matter how you slice it, you should be sure to budget for your wedding cake. “There are so many variables involved in pricing a wedding cake—from the number of servings to the final details, which also include delivery and setup. For a 100-person wedding, a couple should expect to pay a minimum of $500 from a boutique cakery,” says Anita Gupta, chief baking officer at Maliha Creations in Charlottesville. Most wedding cakes are priced by the slice, with a minimum cost that can go up depend-

ing on the design. Fondant, specialty flavors and unique shapes are more expensive than buttercream frosting, vanilla and traditional square or round tiers. Rustic designs like textured buttercream or semi-naked cakes are both popular with brides and easy on the budget. “Not only is it more affordable to keep designs simple, but it also allows the flavors to take center stage,” says Arley Arrington, owner of Arley Cakes. Final advice: Start working with your baker early to determine your design and budget sweet spot.—Whitney Ayres Kenerly

Simple pleasures Sometimes, it’s what’s inside that counts: An unfettered design—two layers painted with gold—lets the honey lavender and champagne flavors in this understated design from Arley Cakes shine. A cake topper found on Etsy (a phrase the couple often says to one another and included in their wedding vows) completes the look.

SIX MONTHS BEFORE: FILL IN THE DETAILS

In and out

A local planner forecasts Virginia’s next big-day thing There’s a joke in Charlottesville that, whatever trend is popular elsewhere, it’ll be popular here in a year or so. We decided to put that to the test, asking Charlottesville-based wedding planner Adam Donovan-Groves, who keeps satellite offices in Washington, D.C.’s Georgetown neighborhood and New York City, to tell us what’s hot, what’s not and what’s coming for Virginia weddings.—Caite White

Hair

“Extensions! Brides want the hairstyles they want and sometimes, they don’t have the time to grow the hair. They are buying the best extensions out there and having them professionally dyed to match perfectly. It doesn’t matter if they want straight, the ever-popular loose to-the-side bun, or long and curly, extensions are proving to be a bride’s best friend (after their planner, of course).”

“Balance—it is all about balance. First, more greenery. Pantone just announced the 2017 color of the year is called ‘greenery.’ Those of us in the wedding/design industry saw this one

JEN FARIELLO

Flowers

coming. Lush greenery is making its way into reception halls everywhere. “We are seeing less and less of the mixed cream, ivory and pale blushes, soft peaches and more of a balance between bold colors and neutrals. Traditional flowers are making less of an appearance as well. Even the forever-loved standard rose is getting upgraded to the peony-like garden rose.”

MICHAEL & CARINA

Décor

“Furniture. Where the focus in the past was on the dinner, now clients are wanting all aspects of their wedding to have special pops. Great lounge furniture for the cocktail hour, instead of just the high and low cocktail tables, is the new must-have. Furniture, which fits the style of the wedding (sleek, clean-lined for modern/contemporary

26

weddings; overstuffed, comfy for an elegant Southern wedding), is something clients are definitely putting much more attention to for the cocktail hour, and then reception space.”

Traditions

“A very big trend we are seeing in our NYC couples is getting away from the traditional ceremony/cocktail hour/reception wedding format. While the bouquet toss still makes an appearance at some weddings, the garter toss has been put away. For instance, one of my clients is doing the cocktail hour first, then toasts, then dinner, then the ceremony followed by dancing. Another couple is doing a small ceremony first, then having guests arrive for cocktails, which turns into a stationed dinner, then dancing.”

ONE DAY BEFORE: ATTEND YOUR REHEARSAL DINNER

Treat your rehearsal as a separate event

F

rom the beginning of their wedding planning, Lizzy Turner and Nik Schrobenhauser knew they wanted their wedding weekend to be very personal: Lizzy had grown up in Charlottesville and attended the University of Virginia and Nik’s family spent many years living in Mexico City. So, for their rehearsal dinner, the couple decided to merge the two: an authentic fiesta de los novios (party for the bride and groom) at UVA’s Colonnade Club. Luckily, the groom’s mother, a veteran event planner, stepped in to curate the entire event— start to finish. “We worked with my mother-in-law to create an aesthetic similar to that of celebrations she attended while living in Mexico,” says Lizzy. “All of our inspiration was drawn from real experiences.” It’s not uncommon for couples to use the rehearsal dinner as a preview for the wedding to come. But, it’s also a great opportunity to do the opposite: incorporate details that guests won’t get on the big day. “In many cases, the wedding day is traditionally hosted by the bride’s family. But couples really want to be able to incorporate both sides

of the family in their event,” says Orpha Events’ Marisa Vrooman. “The rehearsal dinner, hosted the night before, provides a fantastic opportunity to creatively highlight the groom’s side of the family and their traditions.”

35

While Vrooman wasn’t involved in Lizzy and Nik’s rehearsal dinner (though she did plan their wedding), she’s noticed a lot of couples pulling off what are essentially two different events. “For example, I plan a lot of weddings where the bride’s family is from the north and the groom’s is from the south, and so very often the rehearsal dinner favors more traditional and casual Southern foods with bluegrass music and a more relaxed décor,” she says. For Lizzy and Nik, who merged Virginia with Mexico, that meant a few key details: A custom piñata in a traditional star shape hung in the center of the garden from strings of paper wedding flags; Gay Beery of A Pimento incorporated family recipes into the menu of Mexican cuisine; and the night ended with a special surprise from Nik’s parents: a live serenade from Mariachi Ay Ay Ay, a Mariachi group from Washington, D.C. And Lizzy’s favorite detail? A set of hand-painted maracas at every place setting. “The sights and sounds generated by these ancient instruments as we cheered on speakers throughout the evening transported us from Jefferson’s Lawn to the Mexican countryside.”— Caite White

Let’s talk about it

Premarital counseling: For couples who are out of date or in the know?

SIGNE CLAYTON

obody was surprised when Annie Fitzhugh and Bill Scatena decided to get married. The couple met when they were both working at Pippin Hill Farm & Vineyards, and they dated for two years before he put a ring on it. What did surprise some of their friends, however, was their decision to participate in premarital counseling during their yearlong engagement. “I definitely think that there’s a stigma around it,” says Fitzhugh. “I think some of my friends think it’s a little old-school, but to me it was just like, why not take the opportunity to get to know each other better during one of the most stressful times of your life?” Fitzhugh and her fiancé are active members of Portico Church, a nondenominational congregation that encourages a nontraditional style of premarital counseling: The betrothed pair up with a couple who are already married for insight into lifelong partnership. The two couples meet regularly to discuss everything from finances to family planning, and Fitzhugh says it’s been overwhelmingly positive and eye-opening for both her and Scatena. “It sounded like a great opportunity to really learn from a couple who’s been married for way longer than we’ve been together,” she says. “Everybody has disagreements, and if anything it’s really made me more self-aware. I’ve learned a lot about my fiancé and a lot about myself, how I communicate and why I make the decisions that I make.” Fitzhugh says they began counseling last summer, and the process has helped relieve some of the pressure to have it all figured out by the time their January 2017 wedding rolled around. “I think sometimes when people get engaged they get so swept up in the wedding and all the planning, and it’s been great to get to reset and talk about marriage, not the wedding,” she says. “At the end of the day, the wedding’s going to end and then the real journey begins.” Portico’s couple-pairing approach certainly isn’t the only option. Licensed clinical psychologist Dr. Robert Young offers counseling for both engaged and married couples. His services for

married couples is intended to map out and address current problems in the relationship. For those preparing to wed, he recommends two or three sessions to discuss components of marriage that may cause conflict in the future: intimacy issues, parenting styles, relationships with in-laws, etc. “The divorce rate is pretty high, and I know a lot of people want to prepare so they don’t have big problems when they do get married,” Young says. “If you’re getting married, you want to make sure you’re not diving into disaster.”— Laura Ingles

Each of the next seven weddings have one thing in common: love. Now you’re probably thinking, Isn’t that what all weddings have in common? And the answer is, of course, yes. But in the case of these weddings, the love was pouring in from all sides—friends, family, guests—and throughout the whole planning process. One bride’s mom hand-crafted paper flowers for the altar, tables, seating and cake. Another bride’s aunt custom-made her fiancé’s vest for the big day. A groom’s brother and sister-in-law helped created signage from old windows. And, in cases where some loved ones couldn’t be there, the couples found ways to incorporate sentimental details, from framed photos to gold cuff links. It takes a village to pull off a beautiful big day, and these couples were definitely feeling the love.

etting married is (and should be) an emotional experience. “You’re just normal people living normal lives, and then all of a sudden you find yourselves in the middle of one of life’s biggest milestones,” Lesley says. “I started crying and hyperventilating and generally going to pieces out of happiness.” Her response was due in no small part to seeing everything come together—from designing invitations, RSVP cards, save-the-dates, programs and welcomebag inserts to staining and painting wooden signage; from hand-lettering the envelopes, seating and table cards and collecting vintage stamps for the envelopes to buying lanterns, hurricane vases, candles, cake pedestals, wedding arbor and frames. Says Lesley, “It’s easy to get lost in the details of planning—The flowers! The cake! The dress!—but reading our promises to each other, surrounded by friends and family, reminded us that our love and the life we have together is at the center of it all.”

Tradition with a Personal touches complete an Indian wedding

twist 51

Photography by Aaron Watson

“Our attire for the wedding ceremony was very traditional,” says Anjali. Each of the couple’s families are from different parts of India, where there are slight variations in wedding attire. “Each side of our family wore the clothing specific to our region of India.”

52

P

lanning an Indian wedding, Anjali and Gopi knew, meant incorporating certain traditions when it came to attire, décor and even food. But the couple made their special day their own thanks to a few key details. “The months leading up to the wedding were a little bit of DIY-mania,” says Anjali. “We tried to make and do as many things as we possibly could ourselves.” To start, Gopi had recalled a great weekend the couple spent together in New York—attending the U.S. Open, seeing a play and meeting up with some friends. The visit included a special memory of playing with pinwheels while walking around the city, so Anjali suggested translating that memory into escort cards. At the ceremony, guests walked to their seat through an aisle decorated with vintage photos of the couple’s family members at their own weddings; at the reception, they were given cocktail napkins with five facts about the bride and groom. Of course, for all of their careful planning, there was one detail that almost went unnoticed: the first dance. “In the week leading up to the wedding, we soon figured out that we weren’t the best dancers,” says Anjali. They worked with her cousin to cook up a goofy dance, which they executed flawlessly. Not surprisingly, it was one of their favorite moments of the night. You know what they say about the best laid plans...

Anjali and Gopi met at the wedding of a mutual friend who had planned to set them up. They hit it off (“not sure due to or in spite of Gopi’s smooth moves,” Anjali says) and started dating in 2014. They were married a little over two years after they met.

After sampling almost everything on Bollywood Bistro’s menu, Anjali and Gopi narrowed it down. “We were able to pick some great appetizers and entrées which were both super tasty and slightly different than what people normally get at an Indian wedding,” says Anjali. For their big day, Charlottesville natives go local 59

(Clockwise from top left) Instead of traditional bouquets, bridesmaids wore corsages. Whites and greens dominated the wedding, with burgundy and taupe accents to emphasize an autumn palette. Both Cameron and Will wore family heirlooms—she wore her mother’s veil and Will’s grandmother’s vintage earrings; he wore his great-grandfather’s watch, with an orangeand-blue-striped band for UVA. The variety of spaces at the Market at Grelen—a ceremony lawn overlooking the berry fields, a greenhouse, a stone terrace—drew the couple to the Somerset venue. A pop of burgundy showed up everywhere, from florals to the “B” monogram napkins at the reception. Apple cider donuts from Carter Mountain Orchard capped off the night. With the help of Will’s brother and sister-in-law, the couple created signage from old windows.

oth Monticello High School grads, Cameron and Will have known each other since they were teenagers. “In our junior year and senior years we shared a lot of classes together—including the opportunity to take a class at UVA our senior years,” Cameron says. It was during that class they became close friends, until Cameron went to William & Mary for college and Will stayed behind at UVA. “We agreed that if we weren’t married by the time we were 40, we’d marry each other.” They didn’t have to wait that long: After staying good friends through college and beyond, meeting a few times a year and over the holidays, they went on a date in spring 2014. They were engaged just a year later. Given their Charlottesville history, it’s no surprise the couple chose to include a lot of local vendors in their big day—favors, wedding dress, wedding bands and reception food included. “Even our day-of coordinator and hair and makeup artist were Charlottesville natives,” Cameron says. Oh, and don’t forget the music. Cameron and Will had “Crash Into Me” by Dave Matthews Band played on acoustic guitar for the bridesmaids’ walk. Says the bride: “Quintessential Charlottesville.”

“We loved some of the small details that made our day so ‘us,’” says the bride. “During the planning process it was these small things that were fun to look for—and, on the day of, each small piece had its own meaning or memory from how we chose it.”

Old Met appealed to the couple for a few reasons, including the downstairs bar and dance floor and what Caroline calls its “simple elegance.” “We knew the chandeliers, circular windows and curtains would be the perfect backdrop for our reception,” she says.

The place cards, which doubled as wedding favors, were a combined effort from the couple: Caroline hand-calligraphed each card, to which Samantha attached a “love letter” pin from her small business, Double Denim Dude. To keep attire consistent with the color scheme, Caroline and Samantha sent paint chips to their bridesmaids and told them to pick anything within the color range.

hat’s the best way to ensure your big day feels special and personal? Enlist many helping hands, as Caroline and Samantha did for their spring nuptials. “A lot of our wedding felt DIY’d because we had so many amazing friends and family members who volunteered their talents to us,” says Caroline. Her aunt custom-made Samantha’s vest, a family friend created the flower arrangements and bouquets, Caroline’s sister designed the wedding invitations and ceremony programs, a bridesmaid baked

and decorated the wedding cake, Samantha designed the wedding favors and Caroline and her mom collaborated on the seating chart. The result? A wedding that looked polished but not over-the-top. “We tried to keep the décor and attire as simple as possible,” says Caroline, in part because that’s an aesthetic they prefer but also because they were planning the wedding from Chicago—a 700-mile gap that they closed two weeks after getting married, when they moved back to Richmond. Says Caroline, “What can I say? We missed Virginia!”

While Kaitlyn didn’t particularly want a specific color scheme, over the course of planning the wedding, pinks and greens organically started dominating the décor.

ven before she was engaged to Evan, Kaitlyn had a few ideas about their wedding. “I first saw a picture of the barn at Big Spring Farm on Facebook and thought, ‘Now that is where I want to get married,’” she says. Luckily, after he proposed, Evan agreed. The couple wanted one venue that could accommodate both a ceremony and a reception—somewhere simple, casual and outdoors. The Fredericksburg spot checked all the boxes. From there, it was just a matter of deciding how to keep that casual vibe. For Kaitlyn and Evan, that meant no suits (the groomsmen wore blue buttondowns and suspenders), DIY details (Kaitlyn’s mom searched numerous antique stores to find vessels for flowers, including tins, buckets and troughs, and she found vintage shutters and other pieces used to decorate the ceremony and reception sites), lawn games and a naked cake. But the most cherished detail, the couple agreed, was their two families joining together for the celebration. Says Kaitlyn, “Seeing people...who had never met, talking and enjoying themselves. Seeing our friends play croquet together or enjoying s’mores by the fire pit. Seeing our friends and family breaking it down on the dance floor. It was amazing to see everyone together.”

The couple met their freshman year of college at George Mason University. “I had a huge crush on him,” says Kaitlyn.

The bride’s mom handmade save-the-dates, invitations and RSVP cards, plus the seating chart, table numbers, programs, the Mr. & Mrs. sign that adorned the bench at the head table, ceremony snack bags and stickers for the popcorn favors, along with several other details. “Our wedding wouldn’t have been the same without her,” Kaitlyn says. The bride edited her original flower concept—floral garlands covering the barn walls—with the help of florist Lori Tran, who suggested hanging rattan spheres filled with flowers above the head table. Wanting something different for dessert, the couple chose mini jalapeño, blackberry and strawberry-rhubarb pies and bite-sized brownies. For their cake, a naked lavender layer cake with a blueberry/ blackberry compote and vanilla mousse frosting sweetened the day.

Palmer Pekarek and Kenneth Greer Jr. October 29, 2016

Palmer and Kenny’s was the first same-sex wedding held at Keswick Hall.

T

here were three things that Palmer and Kenny knew they wanted to make sure were perfect: the setting, the food and the music. The setting was easy: Having grown up in Charlottesville, Kenny knew the venue. “The beautiful setting of Keswick in the fall is how I like to think of Charlottesville,” he says. The food, by Keswick, was a no-brainer. And the music? Diverse. With a live band, a jazz trio, a pianist and a viola player—18 different musicians throughout the evening—guests were constantly entertained. What didn’t come so easily was their own attire. “You would think because we are two men the attire would have been simple,” Palmer says, but they searched from San Francisco to Paris, finally settling on tuxedos from Turnbull & Asser and Hermes, which coordinated with their gold and midnight blue wedding colors. From there, it was just a matter of enjoying the weekend—and the finished product. “Three hours prior to our ceremony, we popped into the Keswick ballroom to see, for the first time, the room set up with the trumpet vase flower centerpieces and cake centerpieces,” says Palmer. “It was so beautiful we couldn’t hold back our tears of joy—so much so that the entire room of staff started crying too. It was a Hallmark moment for sure.”

82

In total, there were nine (!) cakes at Palmer and Kenny’s wedding—one on each table and one for the couple—each with a unique theme and two layers of different flavors (16 flavors altogether). They were cut up after dinner and distributed to guests. “Even with a late-night snack of kobe sliders and truffle fries, only a few pieces of cake were left,” says Palmer. Below, the couple's branded crest features prominently on all the programs, menus, beverage napkins and even fleece throws for the outdoor couches.

Palmer says his favorite moment was walking down the aisle and seeing so many friends and family members there to celebrate their commitment. For Kenny, the highlight was their first dance, which started with Etta James’ “At Last” and morphed into Sly & The Family Stone’s “Dance to the Music” halfway through. “Palmer and I broke out and boogied our way through a somewhat coordinated but entirely improvised bust-it-loose type of dance routine,” he says.

An autumn wedding overflows with love

The bride and groom wrote their own ceremony (vows included) and had their friends officiate and perform readings.

A

Jenny Prey and Brendan Dawson October 29, 2016

s they started the task of planning their wedding, Jenny and Brendan began with a basic question: big wedding or small? Ultimately, they opted for the former, realizing that the bigger the big day, the more love they’d get to share with friends and family. And the decision paid off, especially at the ceremony during the ring warming (a tradition in which the rings are passed through the crowd so guests can “warm” them with well wishes). “Our guests were so dedicated in their warming that we needed an extra minute of music before the rings made it back to our officiant,” says Jenny. After settling on the wedding size, the couple focused on making the wedding special—not just for themselves, but for guests, too. “We wanted to provide them with an experience that showed how much we appreciated them traveling and going out of their way to be with us,” Jenny says.

Jenny enlisted her mom, grandmother, aunts and family friends from all over the country to make 1,000 paper cranes for the wedding. In all, they ended up with closer to 2,000, which the bride’s mom strung together as a backdrop for the cake and table cards. Jenny’s mom outdid herself with the décor, crafting paper flowers for the arbor and cake decorations; creating the print materials and games; assembling the centerpieces, favors, welcome bags and quilt squares that served as the couple’s guest book. The favors, individual soaps, symbolized two families coming together: one in the form of the Chinese symbol for double happiness and the other a shamrock, representing the groom’s Irish heritage.

Dressing for your wedding means personality—head to toe

Only one thing stands between you and a perfect wedding night: your shoes. And we’re not even talking comfort— we’re talking style! Don’t throw away an opportunity to put another stamp on your big day. Think Louboutin. Think sparkle. Think like these brides, who had the good sense to put a little spring in their steps.—Caite White
