This month, we’re exploring the idea of the three-season porch, starting with Mother Nature’s most brutal: summer. We’ll tell you what you’ll need to consider before adding one to your own home and show you a few of the area’s best options.
A wooden Albemarle landscape draws influences from around the world in the form of plant specimens given to the homeowners by friends, and garden concepts collected on their travels to France, British Columbia and even nearby Richmond.

“Armand and Bernice knew what they wanted,” says Oesch. With only the addition of a rectilinear entryway, the Quonset hut needed to house exhibits related to ecology and history, not to mention other functions. “It’s a puzzle, working from the outside in, with a fixed volume,” says Oesch. Yet the building offered some advantages too: It was sturdy and, says Oesch, “It has an elegant simplicity to it.” It could also be easily sealed off during the winter months, when the Quarry Gardens are closed. Oesch was able to incorporate many of the sustainable strategies that are central to his work. He specified radiant floor heating, nontoxic materials, a solar array and natural daylighting. Spray-foam insulation adds to the building’s energy efficiency, making it, in effect, “like a Thermos bottle,” Oesch says.

ocal lovers of native plants have a new mecca: the Quarry Gardens in Schuyler, where owners Armand and Bernice Thieblot opened 40 acres of native habitat to visitors just this spring. Those visitors will enter through a structure designed to complement the gardens’ eco-minded mission. “This building is in keeping with the underlying focus on the environment,” says architect Fred Oesch. The Quarry Gardens are the Thieblots’ labor of love, conceived as a showcase for native plant species as well as a tribute to Schuyler’s industrial history. Soapstone has been quarried in the neighborhood for well over a century. On the Thieblots’ 600-acre property, soapstone removal stopped in the 1970s and was followed by a decade of trash dumping. So the property wasn’t exactly pristine when the couple bought it in 1991 as a rural retreat from their home in Baltimore. Fast-forward 26 years: The Thieblots are now retired to the property full-time and have transformed 40 acres of this land into a public botanical garden of great beauty and ambition. With the help of Charlottesville’s Center for Urban Habitats and many volunteers, they’ve catalogued 600 existing native species, propagated a number of those and planted upward of 50,000 individual plants. Nearly two miles of trails lead through plant galleries arranged around a pair of water-filled quarries whose sheer stone walls set off the ever-changing greenery. The Thieblots needed a building to welcome visitors. As luck would have it, they’d already installed a Quonset hut—a ribbed metal barn shaped like half a cylinder—a dozen years ago, and Oesch saw a chance to practice adaptive reuse.
The Quonset hut has two entryways: The post-andbeam portico at the front greets visitors and, in the back, the hut’s original sliding metal doors lead guests to the gardens and trails.
OFF THE BOARDS
Under the barrel-vault roof, separate rooms and hallways were framed in so that visitors might easily forget they are inside a Quonset hut. The layout reflects the twin missions of the Quarry Gardens—native plants and Schuyler history—with about half of the exhibit space dedicated to each of those topics. The history side even includes a model railway, a reproduction of the Nelson Albemarle Railroad, which once carried soapstone products and workers. “Part of the idea of this angular hallway was to play into the angularity of the soapstone quarries,” says Oesch. A small garden shop, an office and a classroom—the building will be available to groups such as the Master Gardeners—also find their places inside. In keeping with the industrial history here, material choices are simple (concrete floors, beadboard wainscoting) and the exterior of the building is honest about its Quonset hut origins. Yet with the addition of the entryways, Oesch has added a measure of formality to the functional structure. “It has two faces,” he says: the post-and-beam portico that first greets visitors who arrive from the parking lot, and a new façade tucked behind the hut’s original metal sliding doors, oriented toward the trails. “One is the public face, then there’s the face of the gardens themselves.” Carved wooden benches made by Eric Bull, and bridges and a viewing platform designed by Charles Edwards, add to a sense of local artisanship to complement the Thieblots’ hands-on approach to conservation. Visitors can schedule free garden tours Fridays through Sundays. “There’s nothing like this anywhere,” says Oesch of the Quarry Gardens. “It really is worldclass and unique.”

Open for business Brooks Y designers aim for clarity By Lisa Martin

hen Piedmont Family YMCA CEO Jessica Maslaney was still a program director for the Y back in 2009, she tagged along on a tour of regional Y facilities with local VMDO architects to look at design ideas. “I think they invited me because I was an English major in college, and so I was the notetaker,” laughs Maslaney. That tour inspired the future CEO as well as the architects of the Brooks Family Y to create a new building in Charlottesville that expressed the Y’s mission of openness and inclusivity. Turning the concept of openness into physical reality was a creative delight for the architecture team. Former VMDO co-owner Todd Bullard, who served as the project’s lead construction administrator, had coached and managed Y basketball programs in town for years, and he understood the Y’s intent. “We loved the idea of the building being as transparent as possible,” says Bullard. “For example, from the exterior you can see all the way through to the trees beyond.” Floor-toceiling windows let in daylight and provide large, wooded views from the fitness room and pool. The transparency continues inside, where from any point in the vast fitness center, you can see from end to end of the building from east to west. VMDO senior associate Jim Richardson, who has worked on the project since 2008, says he’s happy when the design influences the performance of a building like the Y. “We think members will appreciate the interior glass, so if you’re working out you can look into the pool
Located in McIntire Park, the new YMCA incorporates design elements that acknowledge its natural surroundings: floor-to-ceiling windows bring in the wooded views from the fitness room and the pool, as well as flood the space with natural light.
and see your kids swimming, or into the gym to watch them play basketball,” he says. For Richardson, McIntire Park is an ideal venue for the Y, as its open interior harmonizes with the surrounding vista. “The park setting is an incredible opportunity for the Y because many programs work well with outdoor facilities,” he says. Given the building’s low profile, “the park landscape seems to slide right into the front door.” The building’s abundant natural light had to be managed efficiently across the various inte-
rior spaces, and the designers used the site’s downhill slope to the west to their advantage. “The gym and pool are essentially massive boxes, and too much glare can be a problem when you’re shooting baskets,” says Bullard. The “boxes” were set into the hillside, sheltered by the surrounding woods, to decrease their exterior bulk and temper the direct sunlight. Energy efficiency is an added benefit, as the earth stabilizes the facility’s interior temperature year-round. Bill Loughridge, owner of Brooks Y builder Loughridge Construction, says the 18-month project wasn’t without its challenges. “The site itself was very tight, particularly on the backside, and there were quite a few accommodations to make sure everybody had access,” he says, referring to a city requirement that McIntire Park remain open during construction. Despite those trials, Loughridge was pleased with the outcome. “It’s really a lovely project, with a lot of clerestory light that brings the outside in quite a bit.” And bringing the outside in is just what the new Y hopes to do.
“We think members will appreciate the interior glass, so if you’re working out you can look into the pool and see your kids swimming, or into the gym to watch them play basketball.” JIM RICHARDSON ABODE 13

o make something from nothing requires a certain amount of optimism. To make something from something? That requires some elbow grease. No problem, says designer Caroline Faulconer, who regularly takes neglected pieces and breathes new life into them. “When designing a space, the ability to refinish or repurpose a client’s existing piece or a flea market find allows me to make the most of the budget and really customize the space,” Faulconer says. Recently, she refinished a mahogany bedroom set for a client who wanted to use the pieces in her granddaughters’ bedroom when they came to visit, but the wood was too dark for the design they had in mind.
“I refinished [them] in a high-gloss white paint, which made for a more youthful yet classic look, with the yellow and blue floral tied in through the bedding and upholstery,” Faulconer says. In your own home, the designer recommends starting small, with a flat, simple piece that’s made of natural wood (other materials, like laminate, make refinishing tricky because they won’t hold paint or can’t be stained) and using chalk paint (“pretty easy to use, very forgiving and has very low VOC”). And, she says, choose a piece that you can instantly envision a new use for. Faulconer is often taking junk from friends because she can see its potential. “Repurposing is easy with a big imagination and an endless well of creativity,” she says.
Fave find “A few years ago I inherited an antique secretary desk that I had always really liked. When my husband and I were moving into our new home this past year, it was in question as to whether we were going to keep it but I just couldn’t let it go. It reminded me a lot of an apothecarystyle cabinet. I realized that all the nooks would be perfect for my bar tools, bitters, etc. I decided to paint the piece a matte charcoal gray/ black, add a mirror top for the bottles and serving tray to sit on and an adjustable chain for a convertible mixing station. There is a large cabinet underneath that is perfect for storage and bottles. It works so much better as a bar than a desk.” ABODE 17

The big screen
A screened porch just might be the perfect marriage of indoors and out. There you sit (or lie or swing). Rain and bugs can’t get to you. But—who was the genius who came up with this?—you’re gloriously available to the breezes, the night sounds, the cool evening air. What’s more, the climate here in central Virginia, with its mild spring and fall weather, is especially wellsuited to a screened porch. We can go there not only to watch fireflies dancing in August, but to smell the lilacs in April and to sip cider in November. After their heyday in the early 20th century, screened porches were eclipsed in popularity by decks; many were enclosed to make sunrooms. But these days, screens are making a comeback. Maybe nostalgia is part of the reason why. Or maybe it’s just that the screened porch is such a great idea—a design that embodies function and pleasure. Read on to glimpse a few of our favorite local examples.

Bug off The pluses and minuses of adding a screened porch to your home By Shea Gibbs
I
n a Virginia summer, there’s no great way to avoid the inevitable mosquito bite if you’re planning to be outside. Enter screened porches. “You can experience the outdoors like you would on a deck, but without fear of getting burnt or bit since you’re covered and screened in on all sides,” says Anna Posner, design manager for Southern Development Homes. So what are the pros and cons of putting an outdoor three-season room on your deck? Local experts break it down.
The drawbacks Most homebuilders don’t see many downsides to screened porches, as long as they’re handled correctly. “Screened porches on the front of a house are harder to pull off from an aesthetics standpoint outside of a traditional farmhouse style,” says Ben Davis, vice president of sales for Craig Builders. “Most often they are a great addition to the side or rear of a home.” 24 ABODE
The real impediments are the usual suspects— space and cash. For the first concern, Davis says some customers get creative. “Recently, we’ve seen trends for adding a screened patio/porch underneath a deck,” he says. “If a screened porch can fit on a homesite, customers are inquiring about them.” One of Craig Builders’ suppliers offers a product that makes it easier to weatherproof under-deck screened areas and add outdoor space to a home, Davis adds. As for the cost of screened areas, there’s no getting around a significant spend. They typically run $15,000 to $20,000 more than a deck or patio alone. Posner says homeowners can expect to see some return on their investment, though. Davis also concedes screens can limit the amount of natural light that makes it into the home—specifically the great rooms and kitchens you’ll often find them next to. Skylights can help in that case, he says. Then there’s that whole “hip” question. And it’s hard not to admit folks who are more interested in practicality than perfection are into screened rooms. “I see more baby boomers add the screened porch feature than millennial buy-
ers,” Posner says. “But, that could also be influenced by their budget.”
The benefits Davis says local buyers are all about it. In the Out of Bounds community, which Craig Builders helped develop at the corner of Barracks and Georgetown roads, the majority of customers opted for some screen-protected living. Homeowners are dressing up their screened areas up, as well, according to Davis. He’s seeing an increasing number of customers pull great rooms and screened spaces together with seethrough fireplaces. “We’ve also had customers request outdoor wood fireplaces with stone chimneys installed in the screened porch space,” he says. Davis and Posner both agree that, space and cost permitting, most modern homeowners are inquiring about screened porches. No matter the type of home, it’s a way to bring some of the comforts of the indoors to the outdoors. And “since they can be installed in new homes very easily, it opens up a lot of possibilities,” Davis says.

Screen scene But what’s actually keeping the sun and insects out of reach? Here are a few standard screen types available from major retailers nationwide. Fiberglass The most inexpensive and popular route for screened porch builders, fiberglass is a great entry level material. Aluminum Coming in at about a third more expensive than fiberglass, aluminum is more durable but harder to install. Bronze, stainless steel, copper Premium metals cost more but are long-lasting and can improve the look of your screened space. Sun-blocking screen All screen will block some of the sun’s rays, but materials are available that can keep porches considerably cooler, knocking out up to 90 percent of the sun’s heat.
In North Downtown, a new screened porch acts as an auxiliary dining room, with views to the wooded backyard.

ost gardens reflect a gardener’s care and dedication. At the Albemarle home of Lucy and Robert Huff, the landscape is also, in a sense, a gallery of souvenirs. The couple have amassed not only plant specimens given as gifts by family and friends, but garden concepts collected on their travels. Ideas from around the world find their echoes in this genteel, wooded landscape. The Huffs bought the property in 1988, though Lucy has family roots here going back generations. Forested then, it now includes a generous stretch of open lawn behind the house, framed by mature hardwoods and naturally occurring dogwoods—the trees that initially attracted them to this spot, says Robert. Coming from a family farm where they were accustomed to caring for a large vegetable gar-
den, they initially started to plant ornamentals in beds near the house—Delaware Valley white and Schroeder pink azaleas, plus some 15-yearold English boxwoods they’d moved from another farm. “It was very hands-on,” says Lucy, remembering the time she planted a hillside full of ivy only to have it destroyed by deer. The couple eventually decided to invest in both a deer fence and the design services of landscape architect Ian Robertson.
Ideas from around the world find their echoes in this genteel, wooded landscape.
The master plan Robertson drew in those early days included stone retaining walls he laid himself, a small water feature and lots of roses around the border of the rear brick patio. But the gardens have continued to develop organically over the years. One long-term change has resulted from the growth of those lovely old trees: Beds that once received lots of sun are now in partial or full shade. One perennial bed now includes astilbe and bleeding heart; another, formerly overflowing with roses, now focuses more on ornamental lilies. For the last four years, garden designer Leslie Harris has come on board to help maintain and develop the garden, helping to reimagine some of the now-shaded beds that Robertson had designed nearly three decades ago. “It allows me to enjoy CONTINUED ON PAGE 35

Sunflowers pay tribute to fields where they biked in France, and daffodils recall a swath of narcissus that inspired Wordsworth in England.

the garden more, without feeling I can never get it all done,” says Lucy, who describes the relationship as a partnership in which ideas and caretaking responsibilities can be shared. “Lucy has fantastic ideas and a very good eye,” says Harris. The Huffs’ travels have provided inspiration on many counts. Sunflowers pay tribute to fields where they biked in France, and daffodils recall a swath of narcissus that inspired Wordsworth in England. The berries of nandinas give dramatic red color in late fall, something that struck the Huffs on a visit to Berkeley Plantation on the James River. In France, Lucy saw and photographed a lamppost that ended up inspiring a whole suite of custom ironwork by Stokes of England: a rose
arbor, a trellis, lighting sconces and, of course, a lamppost. The rose arbor rises above an outdoor table placed on a circular terrace, made of cobblestones removed from an old street in Richmond’s Shockoe Bottom neighborhood. After touring Butchart Gardens in British Columbia in 2004, the Huffs wanted to add a Japanese garden to the rear section of their landscape, and Robertson obliged. It boasts a variegated weeping dogwood, a tabletop Korean pine, Japanese maples with miniature mouse ear hostas peeking from underneath and other Asian ornamentals presided over by a Japanese-style gate. A bluestone walk leads through painted Japanese ferns, mondo grass and sedum. The Huffs seem to know and appreciate every plant on their property. A big tulip poplar near
the front corner of the house “is a fantastically beautiful thing when it blooms,” says Robert fondly. Nearby, a yellowwood tree makes plumes of white flowers in spring, and a pair of limbedup dogwoods shade the house in summer but let sun through in winter, explains Lucy. A couple of unusual trees, like a deodar cedar and a pink Kousa dogwood, help to bring scale and interest to the lawn space as it stretches back from the herb garden off the house’s rear patio. Yet some of the greatest pleasure of this landscape comes from those familiar natives that were here even before the Huffs arrived. Robert gestures to a row of tall dogwoods that, at the moment, form an unassuming row at the edge of the woods, behind lilacs and rhododendrons. “In spring, he says, “it’s just an array of white.” ABODE 35

It isn’t the most obvious décor choice, to be sure, but white offers a lot of design opportunities: It provides a neutral palette to let vibrant, more eye-catching colors shine in accessories and art; it allows light to bounce around; it makes a room appear larger.
