THIS WEEK Food access is a problem for almost 17 percent of the Charlottesville population. That means more than 7,800 people are food insecure: They live in food deserts without access to a nearby grocery store, and some might have to choose between paying rent and buying food. Two years ago, the Local Food Hub launched a pilot program at three clinics in which it not only connected participants with food from area farmers, it gauged the effects that eating fresh, local produce had on their overall health.

In this week’s feature (p. 22), we take a deeper look at the Fresh Farmacy program and its prescription for a healthier future. A 2016 focus group showed that 95 percent of participants said they would eat more fruits and vegetables in the future, and 91 percent said they felt the program was improving their overall health. In the future, Local Food Hub hopes to secure enough money (it’s entirely grant and donation funded) to expand the program to two additional sites, to make sure that more people (farmers and consumers) continue to be part of our area’s food narrative.—Jessica Luck

Big John’s run Fewer than two weeks before the November 7 election, veterans advocate John Miska launched a write-in campaign for Albemarle supervisor in the Rio District, where Dem Ned Gallaway is uncontested. Miska says he’s running as a conservative because he hates to see just one person on the ballot.

Remove ’em all City resident Pat Napoleon and Albemarleian Richard Lloyd are gathering petition signatures to recall all current City Council members following the summer of hate. For Vice-Mayor Wes Bellamy, it’s the second petition calling for his ouster, but the one carried by Jason Kessler earlier this year fell short on signatures.

Charlottesville has refused to turn over documents to the governor’s task force investigating the events of August 12 because the state has stymied city-hired former U.S. Attorney Tim Heaphy’s requests for information for his independent review. City spokesperson Miriam Dickler says the city won’t comply until the state does.

Teacher indicted

Kessler on the move A bearded Jason Kessler, arguably Charlottesville’s least popular resident after organizing this summer’s deadly Unite the Right rally, was given a bond modification in Albemarle Circuit Court October 31 that will allow him to move to Carrollton, Ohio, to take a job with an online marketing company.

Kessler testified that his new boss, who was here for the August 12 events, is flexible and will allow him to return to Charlottesville for court dates, which include a felony perjury charge stemming from filing a bogus assault complaint in January.

Commonwealth’s Attorney Robert Tracci expressed concerns that Optimus Marketing had no physical address in Carrollton.

However, Judge Cheryl Higgins agreed with Kessler’s lawyer that if he came to court to ask permission, he’s likely to come back for his March 20 perjury trial, and she noted that he’s not likely to find work in Charlottesville.

The white supremacist or the gang sympathizer?

Pick your poison.

Virginians relying on smear campaigns to inform their opinions on the state’s gubernatorial candidates likely think the deck is stacked against those living in the Old Dominion.

An ad that surfaced last week shows a downright shocking image of Republican candidate Ed Gillespie and President Donald Trump superimposed above a photo of torch-wielding white nationalists. It reads, “On Tuesday, November 7, Virginia gets to stand up to hate.”

We’ve all heard Trump call known white supremacists “some very fine people” in response to the August 12 Unite the Right rally, but Gillespie, a former Republican National Committee chairman, denounced them and said, “having a right to spew vile hate does not make it right.”

The mailer hit close to home, and wasn’t received well. Says a Daily Progress editorial, “We don’t need state candidates trying to use our pain to their political advantage.”

It came after a barrage of Gillespie campaign attack ads that tie Democratic candidate and current Lieutenant Governor Ralph Northam to MS-13 gang violence.

A female narrator then chronicles Northam’s casting the deciding vote in favor of sanctuary cities “that let illegal immigrants who commit crimes back on the street, increasing the threat of MS-13,” she says, not mentioning that Virginia has no sanctuary cities.

Another ad with photos of Northam interspersed with images of alleged members of the gang with tattooed faces has been put on blast by multiple news outlets for using photos stolen from a Central American news site of members of a rival gang photographed inside an El Salvador prison—not MS-13 gang members in Virginia. D’oh.

Martin Kumer, superintendent of the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail, says “in Virginia, the largest mental health provided in any community is the jail.” He hopes the new mental health docket will change that.

Neal Goodloe, the criminal justice planner for the Thomas Jefferson Community Criminal Justice Board, oversaw the collection of the data at the ACRJ and says a docket may help cut down on local recidivism rates too. According to the study, a small number of people—5.6 percent—were incarcerated four or more times. But that group made up 21 percent of the jail’s total

bookings, and 33 percent of that group—a higher percentage than the overall population—showed signs of serious mental illness.

Goodloe says the numbers did not reveal any racial disproportionalities among people with serious mental illness, but that untreated mental health issues were more common among women than men. The study did not analyze data based on income level or age.

He dropped charges against nine counterprotesters who were arrested for obstructing free passage at the rally, likely in a demonstration where several of them linked arms in front of a gate that police planned to usher the robed Klan members through. These people include Kendall Bills, Cameron Bills, Jo Donahue, John Neavear, Nic McCarthy, Jeanne Peterson, Evan Viglietta, Whitney Whitting and Sara Tansey, who wore teal lipstick and matching tights to court in true Halloween fashion.

Tansey was found guilty of destruction of property in the same court October 16 for nabbing homegrown white rights advocate Jason Kessler’s phone while he was live-streaming a Corey Stewart rally in Emancipation Park February 11.

Also on October 30, Morgan Niles and Erika Ries pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice and were both sentenced to 30 days in jail, which was reduced to 40 hours of community service.

And three people had their cases continued. Tracye Redd, also charged with obstruction of justice, will appear December 1. Jarrell Jones, charged with assault and battery, and Rashaa Langston, charged with failing to disperse in a riot, will be back in court March 5.—Samantha Baars

In the never-ending string of court cases stemming from this year’s run-ins with white supremacists and neo-Nazis, 15 people went before a judge October 30 for charges brought against them during the July 8 Ku Klux Klan rally in Justice Park.

Approximately 50 members of the Loyal White Knights of the KKK, a North Carolina-based group, parachuted into town to protest the tearing down of the General Robert E. Lee statue—and were met by intense opposition in the form of hundreds of angry counterprotesters. More than 20 people were arrested that day, primarily for obstruction of justice and free passage.

After pleading not guilty to obstruction of justice, she testified that she was looking for her husband near Justice Park around 4pm when a Virginia State Police trooper told her an unlawful assembly had been declared and she needed to leave the area. Baker tried several times to turn and walk back through the alley she initially came through, but the officer pushed her and would not allow her to exit the way she entered, she said. He arrested her and another VSP trooper “dragged [her]” to the courthouse to press charges, she said.

City and county officials are hoping to change that with a new court docket aimed at diverting people with mental illness from jail by the end of the year.

The therapeutic docket follows 18 months of data gathering by the local EvidenceBased Decision-Making Policy Team, which found that 23.1 percent of inmates—495 people—at the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail met the criteria for serious mental illness.

“It gave us confidence that we had the numbers for a mental health docket,” says Pat Smith, the executive director of Offender Aid and Restoration, which handles local probation and re-entry services. “We still don’t know how quickly our docket will populate. We don’t even know that we’ll be approved yet.”

Earlier this year, General District Court Judge Robert Downer applied to the Virginia Supreme Court to form the new docket. Smith says they expect to hear back as soon as November, and could get underway

by December. Separately, a $64,504 state grant has funded a docket coordinator position through June, speeding its implementation if it is approved.

Mental health dockets are becoming increasingly popular throughout the country as a type of problem-solving court, similar

to the drug court that began in Charlottesville two decades ago. The docket is voluntary and offers people who qualify a chance at reducing or dismissing their misdemeanor criminal charges upon completion of a lengthy regimented treatment program, which lasts anywhere from six to 24 months.

Nearby, the Staunton and Augusta County mental health docket launched three years ago, and has graduated 14 people, with about a dozen others currently enrolled, says Dave Pastors, the director of Blue Ridge Court Services. Graduates have gone back to college, started businesses and reconnected with estranged family, re-establishing their support networks, says Pastors.

Representatives from the commonwealth’s attorney, the public defender, Region Ten and OAR would all help Judge Downer oversee a Charlottesville-area docket—with the commonwealth’s attorney having ultimate veto power over anybody being considered for entry into the program. Officials say that often a mental illness is directly linked to a person’s crime—trespassing, destruction of property, petty larceny.

Martin Kumer, the superintendent of the ACRJ, says the docket is a win-win. “In Virginia, the largest mental health provider in any community is the jail,” says Kumer. “I would much rather have my staff dealing with people who are here for criminal activity, rather than mentally ill people who are here for criminal activity. It’s expensive, and we are not equipped to deal with them.”

The plant is vigorous and its seeds are highly viable. Professor Vanessa Beauchamp, an associate professor of biological sciences at Towson University in Maryland, ran her dog through a patch of the grass for 30 seconds in an experiment. Students working with her counted 12,000 seeds adhering to the dog’s fur, Heffernan says.

The grass gives off a sticky substance that helps seeds adhere to surfaces.

“The U.S. Forest Service is very concerned,” Heffernan says. Agencies and groups that could help “don’t have a lot of money to throw at a suddenly appearing and seemingly high-threat species.”

Heffernan says the DCR is working to generate awareness and action among everyone in the state, and that the solution will involve land managers, but also landowners. Citizens are encouraged to help weed any wavyleaf grass from the “rambunctious garden,” a nickname among botanists and others for the earth.

To get rid of the plant, you may be able to pull it up by the roots if there are only a few. A larger area may need a chemical herbicide, Heffernan says.

f all of the invasive plant species in Virginia, a new one has risen to No. 1, according to the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation in Richmond.

Wavyleaf grass was introduced in Virginia only in the past 15 years, with its earliest spotting in Shenandoah National Park, says Kevin Heffernan, stewardship biologist with the DCR. This Russian/Eurasian plant “spreads rapidly and covers forest floors in deep shade.”

To date, the plant has been found in more than 60 sites in 17 Virginia counties, including Albemarle and Nelson. According to Heffernan, the yet unopened Williams Woods Natural Preserve in Albemarle has 200 acres covered with wavyleaf grass out of 400 total.

“The wavyleaf grass has outcompeted most other ground-layer species,” Heffernan says.

Robust growth over time could suppress tree and shrub seedlings, he says. “Long term it will alter forest structure.”

his year’s Halloween was supposed to mark the fourth, and predictably largest, Harry Potter festival Scottsville had ever hosted. But the magic was quelled with a phone call from Warner Bros. Entertainment citing trademark infringement.

The town’s spellbinding transformation, including businesses and their owners, has transfixed children, students and adults alike.

“Halloween was always a big deal for Scottsville,” says Kristin Freshwater of Baine’s Books & Coffee. “Living in a rural area growing up, we would have to drive to each house to trick-or-treat...to make it easier, Scottsville had its own Halloween: Every shop would hand out candy.” When Freshwater transformed Baine’s into Honeydukes (the fictional candy shop in the Harry Potter series) one year, the spark for a whole festival was ignited. “We ran wild with it—nonprofits, vendors, shops all jumped on board.”

To cope with the burden of planning an annual Harry Potter Halloween, Freshwater formed the Ministry of Magic, a group of a dozen shop owners and creative people in town. Two other festival heavyweights are Chris Hornsby and Nakahili Womack, of Om Tattoo & Massage, which was transformed into Ollivander’s Wand Shop.

Four years ago, Scottsville saw a handful of shops embrace the Harry Potter Halloween theme, with 800 “muggles”—nonmagical people—visiting. Last year, 25 shops and locations, not including a marketplace with a dozen independent vendors, joined the fun, and nearly 10,000 visitors poured in, brandishing wands and donning Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry house colors of Ravenclaw, Slytherin and more.

James River Brewery became The Leaky Cauldron, and a life-size dragon sat atop Tavern on the James, aka Hog’s Head Inn.

Victory Hall swapped names with the Great Hall, welcoming young witches and wizards to the sorting hat ceremony. The library became Flourish and Blotts Bookseller, and even St. John’s Episcopal Church didn’t want to miss out on the magic: “They researched to recreate the cemetery and look of St. Jerome’s Church at Godric’s Hollow... adding tombstones of Lily and James Potter, even the Peverell family,” says Freshwater. “I was in awe.”

But a few weeks prior to Halloween weekend this year, Freshwater received the call. The Warner Bros. rep was “really friendly about it,” and explained countless festivals across the nation were unwittingly using its intellectual property, says Freshwater.

Warner Bros. representatives told her businesses cannot actively use trademarked Harry Potter-related names but nonprofits, including libraries and churches, can. Without enough time to switch gears for this year’s event, it was canceled. Going forward, Freshwater says the event will be a Wizarding Fest.

“We are disappointed, but now we have an opportunity to create original, inspired names,” she says. “We all love the Harry Potter books, films and J.K. Rowling—we want to respect her intellectual property.”

Other Harry Potter events nationwide have had to evolve or adapt to Warner Bros. guidelines, or face legal consequences. The largest in the nation, the Harry Potter Festival in Jefferson, Wisconsin, has lawyers in constant communication with Warner Bros. to seek permission for certain name uses.

Some Harry Potter festivals in nearby cities, including Staunton and Roanoke, are still “flying under the radar,” Freshwater says.

Freshwater believes the magic will be back in full force next year, albeit with some changes. “You will see new names, some new decorations...but it’ll still be magical,” she says. “Scottsville is a tight-knit community...if anyone needs help or has an idea, we’ll talk about it and make it happen.”

Animal instinct Why do we protect sexual predators?

ou’re expecting too much from people,” my friend Lisa explained to me. “We’re mere animals.” I had been pacing the sidewalk rehearsing the details of the Harvey Weinstein story—at press time, following investigative reports in the New York Times and the New Yorker, more than 50 women have alleged he sexually harassed, abused and in some cases raped them over the three decades that Weinstein topped Hollywood’s ruling class. It was evidently an open secret that he preyed on assistants and aspiring actresses; several men in his orbit have since come forth to admit they’d heard about Weinstein’s actions from women he allegedly victimized. Yet these fellas, apparently believing that relationship status is a factor in sexual harassment, played the boyfriend card and figured Weinstein would stop. Never mind the unknown, unsuspecting women likely to be hurt by an unchastened Weinstein: Self-policing would set things right, or right enough for these guys.

In a New York Times interview, Quentin Tarantino, the filmmaker most closely associated with Weinstein, confessed with breathtaking narcissism that he figured once Wein-

stein realized actress Mira Sorvino was Tarantino’s new girlfriend, he would stop groping her. (A tone deaf Tarantino also expressed hope that folks would keep watching his movies even though we now know he ignored rumors of Weinstein’s continued sexual assaults in the post-Sorvino years.)

What is with these people?! I cursed on the street. Grown men old enough to remember Anita Hill and Clarence Thomas convince themselves the victim’s sex appeal rather than the predator’s power is at the root of the abuse? That’s just one more scent in the Blame the Victim perfume collection. It stinks!

But Lisa’s point was that many people, facing a hard truth and the possibility of confrontation or inconvenience, will take the easy way out.

Which is where our democratic system of laws and regulations is supposed to come in—to protect everybody and ensure your body is respected whether you’re an Oscarwinner’s GF or not. But what happens when those policies fall short, giving more comfort to the perpetrator than the victim?

With sexual assault, the most obvious effect is under-reporting. Lacking trust in the system to uphold their rights above the abuser’s, victims

hold back. That can leave their own trauma unresolved and increases the likelihood the perpetrator will strike again.

Examples of this abound. Here’s but one: Last year the Atlanta Journal-Constitution published a remarkable investigation into the legal

gaps that leave patients vulnerable to sexually abusive doctors, including in Virginia, which earned a grade of C. Using public data to size up the legal situation state by state, the AJC reporters gave the state medical board a score of 64 out of 100.

Virginia ranked particularly poorly in the areas of criminalization and legal notification: The medical board is not required to report allegations of criminal conduct to law enforcement, nor has Virginia criminalized sexual misconduct involving doctors and patients.

Knowing that a physician faces little lasting consequence if found guilty of a sex crime (and the evidentiary standard is uncommonly high in Virginia), a patient would think twice about enduring the ordeal of reporting an incident. Indeed, the Journal-Constitution series highlights a Virginia doctor whose license was reinstated three times though he was known to the state medical board and legal authorities as a serial sexual assaulter. Yuck.

Yes, Virginia, Harvey Weinstein is a beast.

And effectively he didn’t act alone. When it comes to enabling sexual predators, it’s high time more of us rise above and stop acting like mere animals.

This broccoli isn’t good enough for the bags, he says—it won’t last for more than a day or two, and he’s unwilling to give nearly spoiled broccoli to someone who might store it in her refrigerator and return a few days later to a rotting, inedible vegetable. Because in Wells’ eyes, that piece of broccoli is more than a dinner side dish roasted in the oven per the recipe included in the Fresh Farmacy bag; it’s potential for a better life.

“Food is a cornerstone of health, friendship, culture and community. It brings people together around something we all share,” says Wells. What’s more, “food is medicine. If you can eat good, clean food, you’ll have more energy, get sick less often, spend less time out of work or at the doctor’s office. You’ll be able to work more, support yourself and your family better,” he says. This, too, is something Wells thinks about when he packs the Fresh Farmacy bags: Healthy people equals a healthy community.

A simple equation, right? Not entirely, because not everyone in our community has access to healthy food. According to Map the Meal Gap, in 2015 there were 7,630 food insecure people in the city of Charlottesville. That’s 16.9 percent of the city’s population without reliable access to sufficient amounts of nutritious food.

Food insecurity manifests in a variety of ways. Some people live in food deserts, where there are no nearby markets that carry fresh foods. Others face transportation barriers that either make it extremely difficult or prevent them from getting to the grocery store—if you take three different Charlottesville Area Transportation buses to get to Kroger, you take three buses home with your heavy groceries in tow (and what if it’s hot, raining or snowing outside?). Others have to choose between shelter and food, and they opt to pay rent before buying food. Still others may not know how to prepare and eat, say, a butternut squash or an avocado, and spend their food dollars instead on something more familiar and perhaps less nutritious.

t’s about 40 degrees Fahrenheit in the colder of the two warehouse storage rooms at the Local Food Hub, and the air smells of cardboard and brown paper, of bell peppers and root vegetables, and the earth that grew them. Boxed bushels of apples—which keep for months when refrigerated—sit on tall industrial shelves. Printed in bold red letters on the side of each apple box is a proposal, an instruction: Eat Virginia apples.

It’s a sound suggestion. As the popular aphorism goes, “an apple a day keeps the doctor away,” and there’s certainly truth to the saying, as a diet rich in nutrient-dense fruits and vegetables can beget better health.

But an apple a day isn’t enough for total health—there’s more to it than that. And, for some, a single apple, even one grown on a tree at an orchard just down the road, is difficult to come by.

This is the type of thing that Local Food Hub food access fellow Nathan Wells thinks about as he drops 248 crisp green Granny Smith apples into 62 brown grocery sacks on a chilly mid-October morning, packing up CSA-style shares that he’ll distribute later in the day to area clinics as part of Fresh Farmacy, a fruit and vegetable “prescription” program that’s cultivating a healthier Charlottesville by addressing both food access and public health issues in the community.

Every two weeks, from about mid-April through late November, Local Food Hub, a nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing community access to local food, sources, packs and distributes 203 bags containing around $30 of locally grown organic produce.

This particular week, in addition to the four apples, Wells adds to each bag one pie pumpkin, two large delicatta squash (the edible skin softens when the squash is roasted), a box of baby spinach, three green bell peppers, two bunches of leafy collard greens and two heads of broccoli. Upon peeking into a box of broccoli, Wells pauses—it looks a little yellow, ready to spoil.

Limited access to food can be a barrier to health, says Tish Polgar-Bailey, a psychologist and nurse practitioner at Charlottesville Free Clinic. Most of her patients have chronic medical conditions such as diabetes, hypertension and high cholesterol and are either overweight or underweight—all of these conditions can be both better managed and prevented by good nutrition, she says.

But telling someone to eat better isn’t enough, she says.

Oftentimes, primary care providers instruct their patients to adopt a better diet without considering whether that patient has access to those healthier foods. “It seems on some level disingenuous to tell people what to do and then not also help them get what they need in order to follow through on those instructions,” says Polgar-Bailey.

And so, for the past three years, the Fresh Farmacy program has enabled care providers at three local clinics to essentially prescribe produce to their patients. As Wells says, food is medicine.

A bag of produce can be a catalyst for more than eating well. Rita, who picks up her Fresh Farmacy share at the Charlottesville Free Clinic, now walks four miles most mornings.

something new, the excitement of discovery, the excitement of teaching their children, of learning a different way of cooking,” of sharing recipes and dishes with one another in their apartments and during church potlucks. Three of the families served by Westhaven’s Fresh Farmacy program are Karenni persons from Burma, and during community cooking classes in the City of Promise kitchen, they’ve showed Yager and others how to cook with the roots of greens, something not typically done in American cooking.

Each Fresh Farmacy share also comes with a simple, easyto-read recipe on how to prepare at least one of the bag’s ingredients with common kitchen ingredients, like the ovenroasted broccoli with olive oil, oregano, salt and pepper, which Wells included in each bag. The recipes and accompanying write-ups about, say, suggestions for when to use curly kale and when to use dinosaur kale, help familiarize people with new ingredients.

For May Belle, an 89-year-old Westhaven resident who’s lived in the neighborhood for 45 years, the Fresh Farmacy dropoffs remind her of the late Holly Edwards, an activist, parish nurse for the Jefferson Area Board of Aging and former vice mayor of Charlottesville who died this past January.

Edwards helped bring the Fresh Farmacy program to Westhaven back in 2015, but May Belle knew her long before then. May Belle, who uses a wheelchair to get around, lives alone in a small apartment decorated with a painting of San Francisco, a picture of former President Barack Obama and dozens of framed family photos—she has four children and more grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren than she can count. “Every time you turn around there’s a new one,” she says with a laugh. Edwards often stopped in to check on May Belle and take blood pressure and blood sugar readings; sometimes those visits resulted in trips to the emergency room, and May Belle is convinced that Edwards saved her life more than once.

Other visits were calmer, like the time Edwards taught May Belle how to pickle beets. Now, whenever May Belle gets beets in her Fresh Farmacy bag, she pickles and cans them and thinks of Edwards. “I miss her,” May Belle says.

“She was a beautiful person. She was just...she was good.”

One of May Belle’s neighbors or a City of Promise staff member delivers her bag on Fresh Farmacy dropoff day, and May Belle usually invites them to sit in her living room to chat—about growing up on a farm out in Stony Point, about the best way to soak pinto beans before cooking them, about dating in this day and age—before she unpacks her groceries. “I can get the fresh vegetables that I don’t have money to buy, for free,” she says of the Fresh Farmacy share. “And then what I don’t eat, I prepare and put in the freezer, in freezer bags, so I don’t have to cook all that at one time,” she adds. the management of Fresh Farmacy over to Local Food Hub, which now handles both the food and funding side of things while allowing the clinics, which best know the individual needs of their patients, to organize bag distribution.

“I don’t know anybody that wouldn’t want for one of those bags of groceries,” says Barbara Yager, a nutritionist and health and wellness consultant at City of Promise, an organization committed to improving educational outcomes and quality of life for families in Charlottesville’s 10th and Page, Starr Hill and Westhaven neighborhoods (the Westhaven public housing complex was built in 1964 to house residents of Vinegar Hill, a historically black neighborhood, which the city razed to build the Downtown Mall area). City of Promise currently manages and distributes the Westhaven Nursing Clinic Fresh Farmacy shares.

“It’s very high-quality food; it’s not leftover food, it’s not robbing food, it’s not marginal food,” Yager says of the produce, and that’s an important component of the type of food access Fresh Farmacy provides. When Yager began working in Charlottesville public housing areas in the 1980s, she frequently saw food delivery trucks coming into neighborhoods and “literally dumping pallets of white bread products on the sidewalks for residents and driving off.” She also saw food banks giving out food—salty, sugary, preservative-laden nonperishables like white bread, Twinkies and Marshmallow Fluff—that caused more medical problems than they helped.

“I’m sure they were thinking they were giving hungry people food,” she says, but the practice was very demeaning. “It’s sort of like, this is the food you would serve somebody less than you, and it’s not what you would serve your family,” she says.

Yager says that a single bag of produce can be a catalyst for all kinds of things, not just an individual’s good health.

“It’s giving something of value to people as a statement that they’re valued, their lives are valued. [It’s] the excitement of

Inspired in part by other produce prescription programs, such as the ones in New England piloted by nonprofit food access organization Wholesome Wave, Fresh Farmacy launched its pilot program in 2015 with funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Preventative Health and Health Services Grant (which also provided funding for Harvest of the Month, another Local Food Hub program focused on food education for school-age children).

It seemed a dream come true, says Elizabeth Beasley, former health promotions consultant for the Thomas Jefferson Health District. She and others had noticed that after a social marketing initiative encouraging people to track their fruit and veggie intake, the health department had to be more mindful about food access and education in the community. Beasley and Erika Viccellio, a former director of the Charlottesville Free Clinic, often daydreamed of programs they’d implement if money were no object. One of those dreams was to enable doctors and nurse practitioners to write prescriptions for healthy food. When the CDC funding opportunity came up, they brought the idea to Lisa Reeder, food and farm access coordinator, and Kristen Suokko, executive director, at Local Food Hub, as well as health clinic folks they knew through the health district’s Move2Health initiative and the Food Justice Network, and set out to see if a produce prescription could work in Charlottesville.

The health district secured the funding, Local Food Hub sourced the food, and three clinics chose the first set of people to receive the produce prescriptions, which at first were even written on small Rx pads.

Each of those three clinics serves a slightly different population: The Charlottesville Free Clinic provides access to general medical, dental and mental health care, as well as prescription medications, for uninsured and underinsured people in Charlottesville and Albemarle County; the Sentara Starr Hill Health Clinic, a free wellness center run by Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital, tackles obesity—a rising public health concern—through a variety of wellness programs for children, teens and their families; the Westhaven Nursing Clinic provides care for residents of the Westhaven public housing complex, including families and the elderly.

Most of the patients at these clinics face financial and other barriers to food access, and the clinics selected (and continue to choose) Fresh Farmacy participants by considering those who are undernourished or at risk for diet- and lifestyle-related diseases such as diabetes, obesity, hypertension and coronary heart disease, and those who are ready and willing to make a change in eating and wellness habits.

People have the opportunity to meet with a care provider when they pick up the bag, and during the pilot year, the clinics tracked patient biometric data closely. Over the course of the 28-week distribution cycle, patients saw biometric improvements, such as weight loss or gain (some people started the program undernourished and/or underweight), improved body mass index, better blood pressure control and blood sugar control. Just about everyone reported feeling generally better, too.

The program was well-managed and well-received, Beasley says, and after that first year, the health district handed

Fresh Farmacy isn’t just about the collards; it’s about the community.

gram sustains “the whole chain,” paying farmers a fair price for their product while supplying it to the consumer at a low (in the case of Fresh Farmacy, free) price and showing the consumer how to use and enjoy the product. It “really dovetails with [Bellair’s] goals to get local food out to different segments of the population,” Barrett says. Nationally, there seems to be a movement toward putting better food in our bodies, and that’s a choice that all people should have, he says.

Anecdotal evidence and numbers alike suggest that Fresh Farmacy is contributing to a healthier Charlottesville. At the end of the 2016 season, Local Food Hub held a focus group to ask Fresh Farmacy participants about their experience with the program. Ninety-five percent said that they would eat more fruits and vegetables in the future; 63 percent said they would eat local produce in the future, but Local Food Hub believes that the number could be higher if participants felt as though local produce were accessible to them outside of the Fresh Farmacy program.

In that same focus group, 88 percent of participants said they felt as though Fresh Farmacy was improving their eating habits, but more people—91 percent of the participants— felt that Fresh Farmacy was improving their overall health.

This could be evidence for the idea that healthy eating spurs more healthy activity and jump-starts general wellbeing.

This is something that Rita, one of the Free Clinic patients, has discovered. Once Rita started eating more produce, she says she started to feel better and picked up another healthy habit: taking a four-mile walk every morning. She frequently shows up to the Free Clinic Fresh Farmacy pickup wearing sneakers, patterned workout pants and a T-shirt with “Fitness 4 Life” printed across the chest.

The Free Clinic’s Polgar-Bailey believes, too, that there’s something to be said for showing someone that you care about them as a person, about their entire being and not just numbers on a scale and lab test results. Sharing food often means sharing culture, sharing personal stories, which is a surefire way to get to know someone.

Another of Polgar-Bailey’s patients, a woman named Virginia, starts talking of food as soon as she sees bunches of curly kale poking out of the tops of the bags, a lively contrast against

the Free Clinic’s drab beige walls. Virginia, who has high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes, enrolled in Fresh Farmacy last year and says that not only is she feeling well, she says that the pickups conjure good memories of growing up in the Mexican countryside. In Spanish, she tells Polgar-Bailey that when she was a child, she’d visit a street with produce stands on either side, tables full of onions, peppers, chiles, lettuces, cilantro and more, and people could just take what they needed. That doesn’t exist here in the United States, Virginia says as she sits in a waiting room chair with her bag of produce in her lap, rubbing the kale between her index finger and thumb and thinking of how she’ll prepare it later.

Next year, Local Food Hub plans to continue funding 95 shares for the Starr Hill Health Center, Westhaven and the Free Clinic; so far, United Way and MLG Foundation have committed to helping fund the program, which will cost about $60,000 for those 95 shares, says Local Food Hub’s Reeder. Local Food Hub hopes to secure enough funding to expand the program to one or two additional sites, perhaps to the Southwood neighborhood in Albemarle County, which is currently being redeveloped by Habitat for Humanity.

Region Ten and BeWell, whose involvement more than doubled Fresh Farmacy’s reach in 2017, hope to participate in 2018 as well.

Because Fresh Farmacy is entirely grant and donation funded, there’s no way to guarantee its existence year to year.

Charlottesville has too many resources for people to be left out of the local food narrative, says Jackie Martin of Starr Hill Health Center. “I wish as a community we’d invest more money in programs like Fresh Farmacy, because we know that people have better health outcomes when they eat healthy,” Martin says. She worries that free, fresh produce won’t be around forever, and wonders what we as a community will do to ensure that Fresh Farmacy continues and expands, both for the veggie consumers and the farmers.

“We are healthiest in relationship, in community,” says Polgar-Bailey, and Fresh Farmacy sustains community.

“Health is not a possession. It is not mine to have, if I am fortune enough to have it, and to keep it for myself, but a gift to be given and nurtured in others. ...If we try to guarantee health only for some, we corrupt it. Health, individually and in the broader sense—in the community—grows when we help provide for it and nurture it in others.”

In 2017, two other area clinical programs—UVA Health System’s employee wellness program, BeWell, and Region Ten’s Boost integrated care program, funded by a federal grant through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration—joined Fresh Farmacy, which more than doubled the size of the program: By the end of the year, Local Food Hub will have distributed 29,500 pounds of food (up from 11,865 pounds in 2016), worth nearly $52,000.

This amount covers 203 bi-weekly shares; 30 shares each to Westhaven and the Free Clinic; 35 to Starr Hill Health Clinic; 90 to BeWell and 18 to Region Ten’s Boost program.

The Westhaven, Charlottesville Free Clinic and Starr Hill Health Clinic sites are funded by grants obtained by Local Food Hub from United Way, MLG Foundation, Dominion, Bama Works and a few anonymous donors; BeWell and Region Ten pay for their own shares.

Region Ten, which joined the Fresh Farmacy program in late summer, will test out a winter pilot program to see if and how Fresh Farmacy might be sustained for all sites through the colder months.

People miss the shares in the winter, says Lisa, a Westhaven resident who has participated in Fresh Farmacy since the beginning and uses her share to cook for four people, including her two young grandchildren. She says that when she goes to the grocery store, she’s often disappointed by the price of produce—it’s a lot of money for a little bit of food, she says. And while the City Market is both walkable from her home and a fun place to discover new vegetables and fruits, it’s expensive.

(C-VILLE priced out the bag of produce that Wells packed up—the one full of squash, apples, spinach, collard greens, broccoli, peppers and a pumpkin—on a recent Saturday at City Market, and the total came to more than $48.) At one point in her life, Lisa wouldn’t eat for days because she had neither the time nor the energy to cook for herself. But she loves fresh fruit and vegetables, especially tomatoes, and when she has no-prepneeded snacks like carrots and bell peppers around, eating well is less work. Plus, she says, it’s important to her that her grandchildren learn healthy eating habits when they’re young, like snacking on vegetables and dip instead of cake.

Lisa’s neighbor, Lorrie, was involved with Fresh Farmacy in a previous season and hopes to get back on the list soon. She says the program introduced her to some items like squash and broccoli that she might not have tried otherwise. Oftentimes, Lorrie walks to the City of Promise house with Lisa to retrieve a share for an older neighbor who has trouble walking.

It works out well for the farmers, too. Ashley and Daniel Malcolm run Malcolms Market Garden, a 10-acre vegetable and flower farm on Christian’s Creek in Staunton. “We farm because we love the dirt,” Ashley says. “We love nature and the science and challenge of growing food for our family, neighbors and community,” and raising a family “in a healthy, satisfying, humble and honest way.” Because Malcolms is a small farm, it might not be able to supply enough produce to sustain, say, a University of Virginia dining hall’s needs, but it can certainly contribute to the smaller-demand Fresh Farmacy shares. Before the growing season, Local Food Hub and 25 of its partner farms work out how much of a certain item the Fresh Farmacy program will require, and when.

When the produce is ready, Local Food Hub buys it direct from the farmer and brings it to the warehouse, where Wells performs his bagging ritual.

Whether he’s responding to Kurt Andersen’s story of Puritan settler Anne Hutchinson with a modern answer in song, or co-writing with notable author George Saunders, Arthur stays busy crafting his own subgenre through collaborations.

Maxx Katz won a SOUP grant in 2016 that became instrumental in launching her project Floom, leading indirectly to Sunday’s release of Multi-Voice of the Immensity, a 38-minute track of flute, doomy guitar and voices. “If a performer rings their heart like a bell, it starts ringing everyone else’s,” Katz told C-VILLE after the win. The support gave the avant-garde musician creative currency as well, and after spending a summer in Portland, Oregon, where she was inspired by the city’s metal and experimental music scene, the ripple effect finds us saying farewell to Floom at a show with special guests Gull and Little Graves. $7, 7pm. Jackie Shane Any Other Way (Numero Group) Any Other Way is an incredible soundtrack with a riveting story. Jackie Shane was assigned male at birth in 1940 Nashville, identified as female as a teenager, blew minds as a singer/stand-up drummer in various bands, moved to Toronto at the turn of the ’60s, sparked the city’s soul scene with incendiary live shows and a regional hit with William Bell’s “Any Other Way,” retired in 1971, then virtually disappeared—until this reissue.

Shane deserves universal recognition for her stunningly brave, trailblazing transgender embodiment—the liner notes here are dazzling, featuring an extensive essay by soul historian Rob Bowman, along with dozens of photos. She also made some of the tightest, most electrifying soul music I’ve ever heard.

Shane’s voice is fluid and commanding, and the backing bands just plain cook. There’s a half hour of studio recordings—burner after burner—and more than an hour of a 1967 live set that is simply exhilarating. A frontrunner for reissue of the year.

Tough Age Shame (Mint) Tough Age also moved to Toronto (from Vancouver)—but there end the Jackie Shane

parallels. Happily though, Tough Age swings hard in its own way, which is fevered minimal indie rock reminiscent of The Clean or rougher-edged C86 stuff—splitting the uprights of twee and punk. And the trio does it well—singers Jarrett Samson and Penny Clark sound great together, and the stripped-down grooves are on point—props to new drummer Jesse Locke. The concluding title track is kind of a drag (it’s about remembering and living with your shame— so you don’t forget it, man!) but the rest of the album whips up a righteous frenzy.

main course, but “It’s Just Begun” brings woozy, White Fence country vibes, while “Born in 77” is a sped up “Gimme Shelter” crossed with “Now I Wanna Be Your Dog.” There’s a dose of guitar solo thunder on the dumb Replacements homage, “Teeth Are Shite,” and a closing hymn in “Winter Weather.” Murderburgers is an impeccable pastiche, killing just a bit more softly.

King Khan

Beloved dream-pop darlings Luna “disbanded” in 2004, though married bandleaders Dean Wareham and Britta Phillips never stopped producing Luna-like jams on their own. Nevertheless, the band proper has just released its first album since 2004—a covers record (Sentimental Education)—and this, an EP of instrumentals with enough going on to transcend wallpaper and become something more, songs without words.

Opener “GTX3” sets the tone, as Wareham’s chiming guitar runs through figure after fetching figure over a softly jubilant background. Even at its most rocking it doesn’t break a sweat, but its dips into melancholy never tip into gloom, and I’m just fine with the wistful gorgeousness that pervades the whole set.—Nick Rubin

Murderburgers (Ernest Jenning) Murderburgers: the first King Khan solo album—sort of. Having spent most of his career fronting the Shrines and collaborating with BBQ Show, this is the first album with the unadorned King Khan moniker.

That said, he’s backed by Oakland’s Gris Gris, a retro-badass mob seemingly invented to support Khan’s goofball wild man schtick. Weirdly, the result is the most subdued Khan album in a long while—and weirder still, it’s among the best. The songs themselves are gems, and the arrangements are killer, with swirls of sliding and twanging guitar, keening organ, barking sax, tomheavy drums. Sixties garage boogie is the

hen Scott DeVeaux was growing up in New York in the 1950s, he encountered “a lot” of Civil War specters.

Several relatives were named after Confederate generals, displayed Confederate figurines throughout their homes and celebrated memorabilia like trading cards commemorating the centennial of the War Between the States. Though he didn’t know what to make of the nostalgia, DeVeaux became fascinated by that period in American history.

After moving to Charlottesville in 1983 to begin his career as a music professor at UVA, DeVeaux discovered a surprise about his Yankee family tree involving his great-great grandfather Robert Bowles.

“My grandma’s grandfather was actually from Virginia,” DeVeaux says. “I went to Alderman Library to research [Bowles] and after getting debriefed by my grandmother, I found out he was in the 19th Virginia Infantry.” An “ardent Confederate,” Bowles fought and was captured during the Battle of Gettysburg.

“My great-great grandfather was in Pickett’s Charge, and I want the [Emancipation Park’s Robert E. Lee] monument to be taken down,” says DeVeaux. “It’s important for someone in my position to take a stand like this.”

As a member of the Thomas Jefferson Memorial Church–Unitarian Universalist for three decades, the church’s choral director for the past six and a talented jazz musician, historian and professor, DeVeaux has faith in music as a model for society. He believes elements like rhythm unite diverse audiences and performers in the same “groove,” and that versatile musicians have the power to blur lines of race, class and artistic genre.

He’s also a big fan of “The Rachel Maddow Show,” which DeVeaux has “watched religiously” since the election, and he’s felt drawn toward her reporting on the Indivisible Movement. “[Indivisible’s] principle is that you bug your own representatives, rather than senators, because they’re sensitive to their constituents,” says DeVeaux.

“As soon as I heard about it, I wanted to join.”

After attending an Indivisible Charlottesville planning meeting at The Haven, DeVeaux says he was ready to do anything to support the organization. With the help of friend and fellow jazz musician John D’earth, DeVeaux coordinated an impressive lineup of artists for Disturbing the Peace: A Benefit Concert for Indivisible Charlottesville, on November 5 at the Thomas Jefferson Memorial Church–Unitarian Universalist.

The bill includes hip-hop artist A.D. Carson, jazz musicians DeVeaux, D’earth, Pete Spaar and Greg Howard, percussionists Robert Jospé and Kevin Davis, poet Deborah McDowell, and singer-songwriters Devon Sproule, Mariana Bell, Wendy Repass, Peyton Tochterman and Bill Wellington.

“We want people to understand the ecumenical quality of music, to play effectively with each other, to say ‘Wow, I didn’t know that

a jazz trumpet player could play behind a folk singer,” says D’earth. Though he doesn’t identify as religious, D’earth’s grandparents were Unitarians and he empathizes with the Unitarian concept of religion as rooted in social justice.

“I hope people will take away the idea that, ‘Yeah, I should do that,” D’earth says. “Let’s do something and say things, not just absorb.”

Carson hopes that the concert highlights other “institutional monuments” of white supremacy, “not just those named after Robert E. Lee or Stonewall Jackson,” he says.

“While it’s not surprising that the events of August 11 and 12 took place, what we find ourselves needing to do is improvise and collaborate to find our way forward,” says Carson. He will perform work from his recent album, Sleepwalking, Vol. 1, including pieces he hasn’t performed live.

Sproule initially struggled with where to put her energy as a musician. The current climate gives her “chronic low-level anxiety,” and she compares the stress to feeling like a child living in a house where she doesn’t feel safe. Sproule will perform “Turn Back to Love” at the concert. It’s a new tune and the culmination of her effort to find an authentic, resonant voice in the face of anger, hate and violence.

“It feels like you can’t do anything, but you definitely can,” Sproule says. “Charlottesville is a place where you can reach out to people and say, ‘I’m sorry. I’m feeling scared by myself, can I go with you to this concert or meeting?’ That’s being indivisible.”

other side. Even though they may not like me, they respect my knowledge.” This also helps to keep his emotions in check. “If you go in blind, you’re apt to be very angry,” he says.

Davis, who is now 59, lived overseas in early childhood while his parents worked in the U.S. Foreign Service and he met people of all races and backgrounds. “I was used to what we call today diversity or multiculturalism,” he says. When his family returned to the U.S. in 1968, a 10-year-old Davis was one of two black children in the school he attended in a suburb outside of Boston.

One day while his Cub Scout pack marched in a parade, white bystanders began throwing rocks and soda cans at him. “I didn’t realize I was the sole target until my den mothers and scout leaders came to protect my body with their bodies,” he says.

After he told his parents what happened, “They told me for the first time in my life what racism was,” Davis says. The concept was so foreign to him, he didn’t believe them. But six weeks later, on April 4, 1968, Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated.

“Then I realized my parents hadn’t lied to me,” he says. “A question formed in my

Her work, in turn, empowers her subjects by making them visible. Photography, she says, “became this incredible tool for creating awareness and understanding across cultures, and countries.”

This concept has become her passion.

“There is a universal truth that we have more in common than we often realize,” says Vitale. “And it behooves us as journalists and storytellers to give a broader vision of what the world looks like.” She seeks out “stories of love, courage and those that inspire empathy” to connect us.

Clearly, she’s stifled and ready for sin. Then her neighbor offers her a handful of potato chips and all bets are off.

The show itself is short, which was a welcome surprise for this impatient viewer.

Though plot twists didn’t unfold as quickly as I hoped, the pacing allowed me to slow down and appreciate art constructed for audiences more than 250 years ago.

Gordon-Stewart’s direction uses physical comedy to fill in the blanks between and during songs. Even the translation of Rameau’s lyrics, cast on a projection screen, are brief and quippy. (I doubt that Génie’s prayers literally translate to “I’m a son of God like you, I know how to man up,” but that’s what VHO gives us.)

Clever props, contemporary costumes and colorful murals paint an ultra-modern picture of guru worship, romantic obsession and a Whole Foods-fueled quest for moral purity that strangles authentic happiness.

I especially liked the ensemble—all talented singers in their own right—acting as vocal observers of the central love triangle.

Some even wore Acante and Génie shirts.

Watching both sides cheer its respective hero, I was reminded of shows like “The Bachelor” and “The Voice,” where the intimate passion of strangers becomes a spectator sport. Hilarious yet disturbing, no?

Rachelle Durkin, who plays Céphise, walks a wonderful line between independent lady and guilt-ridden, empathic lover.

And I really loved the comedic timing of Patterson, who used her few lines as The Grand Priestess to enliven a lagging second act.

Not only did Maria Daniel’s choreography expand the storytelling (and my brain), it gave me a chance to soak up the beauty of the music, performed by ensemble-in-residence the Early Music Access Project, and expertly conducted by Christine Brandes.

I walked away from Sympathy feeling a little confused. Not just because the end surprised me, or because I kept wondering what Rameau’s lyrics actually said, but because when you’re a goldfish peering outside the bowl, you become dimly aware that an entire world exists beyond what you can see.

I may never become a hardcore opera fan, but VHO has officially opened my eyes—and allowed me to enjoy the experience.

’ll be honest: I’m not really an opera person.

Until this weekend, I assumed opera consisted of people in fancy outfits belting overwrought, angst-ridden songs in foreign languages before dying on stage. And while I’m terribly impressed by the skill and talent required to fine-tune the operatic “instrument,” I am not the most qualified person to write a review of Jean-Philippe Rameau’s Sympathy, the latest production by Victory Hall Opera.

But Charlottesville-based VHO is a company for people who don’t go to the opera. Actually, it’s for newbies and veterans alike, which explains how I wound up having this conversation with a stranger during intermission: “French Baroque shows are very unusual. You rarely see them performed,” said a bespectacled man who stood next to me. “I drove all the way down from Maryland to see this.”

Though it may be lost on certain locals (cough), VHO is an anomaly in the opera world, drawing top talent from across the planet with its distinctive model of ensemble-led “indie opera for the people.” Miriam Gordon-Stewart, the director of Sympathy, is not only a co-founder and artistic director of the opera, but an internationally recognized singer as well.

Sympathy itself is a remarkable show. As Brenda Patterson, VHO’s director of music, writes in the playbill, “we believe these are the first professionally staged performances of [Jean-Philippe Rameau’s La Sympathie] since it was written in 1751.”

Can you imagine? A Baroque opera writer composes a whimsical story to celebrate the birth of a duke...and it pops up in Charlottesville, 266 years later.

“You rarely see this period on stage,” explained my compatriot, “because 18thcentury French is difficult. It requires specialized singers. You know, ones who can make the words sound like clouds floating across the sky.”

Though cumulus aesthetic is lost on me, I was aware that the singers are excellent, and the entire show feels relevant, interesting and—dare I say it?—entertaining.

Sympathy tells the story of Céphise, the female half of a picture-perfect couple, who doubles down on her commitment to her partner, Acante, after realizing she’s attracted to their neighbor, Génie. Céphise and Acante seek the help of Zirphile, a celebrity therapist and relationship healer, who casts a spell that causes each to feel the emotions, and echo the movements, of the other. Hilarity, frustration and self-realization ensue.

In VHO’s clever retelling, Céphise and Acante wear matching footie pajamas and trot around town in unison, locked in their devotion to farmers markets, mindful eating and each other. But when Acante isn’t look-

Thompson is an entrepreneur whose résumé includes product development at W.L. Gore (maker of Gore-Tex), marketing at Disney, founding his own cartoon company and WAGiLabs, an incubator for kids’ ideas, and teaching creative leadership. Now a Batten Fellow of entrepreneurship at Darden, he says, “The most common question that I get asked is how did you go from dropping out of college to working as a chemist to drawing cartoons to now teaching at schools that would never accept you as a student?”

His answer is simple. “I see in opposites,” he says, a perspective he attributes to “the gift of dyslexia.” It causes him to “take a lot of supposed missteps,” but ones that have led him to success. “I love the magic of opposite thinking, because at first glance opposite ideas sound absurd, contradictory, illogical and fly in the face of all reason.”

But on second look, he says, “They can open up possibilities, break through mental blocks and pull the rug out from under false assumptions.”

And who better to ask than a Klansman?

“I never set out to convert them,” he says. But after befriending him, many have questioned their beliefs and left the Klan. As a result, Davis has become a proponent of open dialogue and has come to believe, “When two enemies are talking, they’re not fighting,” he says. “It’s when the talking ceases that the ground becomes fertile for violence.” He further reasons, “Racism is learned behavior. ...Dialogue made them this way. Dialogue can undo it as well.”

Against the odds Suburbicon doesn’t make up for lost time

The increasing indignities suffered by the Haynes family are meant as juxtaposition for the actual crime next door, which has broken out into violence, conspiracy, murder and fraud. While the residents of Suburbicon cannot abide the presence of peaceful, gainfully employed AfricanAmericans in their midst, they are blind to the real threat. This would be fine, and carries a worthwhile message, except the

tertainment or a civic-minded thinkpiece, nor does it appear to have been particularly fun to make. The whole thing is a waste of everybody’s time and talent.

The eponymous Suburbicon is a picturesque development in the 1950s, which is introduced by way of an exaggerated PSA. We are told of the safety, strong sense of community and diversity of its population—white people from New York, white people from Ohio and white people from Mississippi. Everything is blissful until it is discovered that the new neighbors, the Meyers family, are black. The town rallies, signs petitions and begins a campaign of harassment and terror to drive them out, while televisions and radios broadcast actual interviews from the day demonstrating how

brazenly racist those who attempted to defend their civil rights against integration really were. While they go on about the right to live with who they want and how they’re not racist, the n-word is barely two sentences away at any given moment.

That, however, is not the plot. Seriously.

The entire narrative centers around the repercussions of a home invasion suffered by Gordon Lodge (Matt Damon) and his family, in which his wife (Julianne Moore) is killed. Before too long, her sister (also Julianne Moore), well, let’s not spoil it here—if you’ve ever seen any other movie in your life, you know what’s coming next. The trailers and official plot summaries try to sell this as a story of a regular man lashing out against the mob, but whoever came up with

Meyers family is reduced to plot foils by the predictable nonsense transpiring in the Lodge home.

Clooney has chosen his cast wisely, and everyone commits to his or her role, however big or small. A few scenes show the occasional spark of genuine inspiration, such as the attempts by Gordon’s boss to empathize following his wife’s murder, or the delightful appearance by Oscar Isaac as a suspicious claims investigator. The scene between Isaac and Moore in particular has enough energy to have been its own one-act play. But, that’s about as much positivity that can be mustered for this misfire.

Just don’t see Suburbicon. Nothing about it works. It’s not funny, has no insight into its own subject matter, focuses on the wrong plot, is stylistically vapid and should have been left unmade as it had been for 31 years.

The Coens have moved forward with their careers in terms of maturity and sophistication. Clooney should do the same.

mart and talented people who are aware of the fact that they are smart and talented sometimes have difficulty separating good ideas from the really, really bad ones. In 1812, Napoleon Bonaparte, one of history’s greatest military minds, assembled the largest army to date to invade Russia, partially to ensure strategic dominance of Europe but in no small part out of spite.

Later that year, he fled Moscow with his tail between his legs and half of the troops he’d arrived with—the other half had deserted him or died of starvation and cold. In 1969, guitar legend and studio innovator Jimmy Page took “Heartbreaker,” a solid, swaggering track off of the Led Zeppelin II album that was already in the can, and decided that the thing it was missing was an unaccompanied, aimless, sloppy, tonally uneven noodlefest of a solo dead in the middle.

Now in 2017, award-winning filmmaker George Clooney delivers Suburbicon, an unproduced screenplay from the Coen brothers written in 1986, before they were the masters of the craft they are today. Clooney and creative partner Grant Heslov, intelligent and thoughtful storytellers in their own right, have delivered a half-cocked stylistic aping of the Coens’ famously elastic-looking comedies while expecting to capture the same anarchic magic found in Raising Arizona, The Hudsucker Proxy or Burn After Reading. But as much as Clooney appears at home in a Coen production—he delivers pitch-perfect performances in Intolerable Cruelty, O Brother, Where Art Thou? and Hail, Caesar!—his cinematic impression of their aesthetic is simply not engaging as en-

FF First Fridays is a monthly art event featuring exhibit openings at many downtown art galleries and additional exhibition venues. Several spaces offer receptions.

Ann Robertson made her first art quilt more than 20 years ago, as a way of working through her experience in the Great Hanshin earthquake that hit Kobe, Japan, in the wee hours of January 17, 1995.

With no prior quilting experience and only one American quilting book and some Japanese quilting magazines to go by, Robertson developed her own style outside of traditional medallion-style quilts, making wall quilts with silk from old kimonos, and calling attention to the fabric’s woven and painted designs.

For “Sticks and Stones,” one of the pieces on view this month at the Fiber and Stitch Art Collective show at Indoor Biotechnologies, Robertson created a bold, geometric design from 25 squares of red silk, each square randomly slashed with an inserted strip of contrasting silk (the “sticks”). The focal point of the piece, the three “stones,” is in the upper left quadrant, and the density of the “sticks” diminishes as the eye roves toward the outer edges of the quilt, the surface of which is free-stitched with various colored threads and patterns. Like most quilts, this one is sewn together, batted and backed.

Quilting isn’t unlike painting or drawing, Robertson says. Free-stitching creates patterns revealed by light and shadow; use of different thread can slightly alter perception of the fabric color, and translucent fabrics add shading and dimension. “Sticks and Stones” speaks to the fiber and stitch nature of the quilted art piece, she says, artful but familiar in its appeal to both the eye and the hand.

Email was still a relatively novel thing in the late 1990s, and Dob was touched that this college student in Idaho was sitting in his dorm room, thinking about the bagels she had indeed made in her Colorado bakery in the 1980s and ’90s and sold all over the state before the business folded and she moved to Virginia. “This was the kicker,” she says. She knew she had to restart her bagel business.

Around that same time, Dob met and fell in love with Cynthia Viejo, and ever since, the two have built Bake’mmm Bagels into a thriving small business. The Bageladies, as they call themselves, have been a Charlottesville City Market favorite for more than a decade, and as of this week, they’re expanding their wholesale bagel operation into more than 370 Kroger stores and approximately 40 Earth Fare stores.

Bread has always been in Dob’s soul. At age 5, she started baking yeast breads with her Gram; by 7, she was making hot cross buns on her own (though her brothers used her inaugural batch as baseballs, she says, laughing). As an adult, she opened her own bakery, and while there started making bagels after coming across a formula in her grandma’s recipe box. There were no instructions, though, so Dob had to decipher the correct rising, boiling and baking method.

After a chatty customer kept her away from a pot of boiling bagels for a bit too long, Dob noticed that this particular batch of bagels

was different—in a good way. Turns out, the extra boiling time changes the nature of the wheat starch, to where the bagels have 60 percent fewer sugar and zero wheat starch glucose compared with other bagels. Bake’mmms are also devoid of 13 allergens, including dairy, soy, eggs, tree nuts and peanuts.

Dob and Viejo regularly sell out of their bagelini sandwiches—especially the bacon, egg and cheese—at City Market, where they also sell five-bagel bags of most of their flavors (like the plain Big City Original, onion, cinnamon raisin and cranberry apple) that customers can take home and toast themselves. They know most of their customers by name and welcome new ones with big smiles and warm greetings. Dob works the griddle while Viejo takes orders and payments, handing out $1 coins as change (printing paper money isn’t economical, she’ll tell you) and sending people out into the market with a warm bagelini and a recitation of her mantra: “Enjoy this day! Peace and love.”

The Bageladies Cafe and Bake’mmm bagels is the realization of Dob’s dedication to her dream, Viejo says, adding that this business focused on bread is about love, community and support. And though they’re expanding wholesale into grocery stores all over the East Coast, Dob and Viejo promise more bagelinis for Charlottesville in the future, and not just at the City Market, which wraps up its season this month: There’s a Bageladies food truck in the works.

Lung Imaging Study

Repeated or prolonged seizures may be lifethreatening emergencies. Patients presenting to the UVA Emergency Department with seizures that do not stop after first-line drugs will be given one of three drugs commonly used to treat continuing seizures. The purpose of the study is to see which of the drugs works best. This is a public disclosure notice. Patients may opt out of study participation or may discontinue being in the study at any time.

Still experiencing symptoms of depression after taking medication? If so, please consider participating in our medical research study comparing three FDA-approved antidepressant treatments. Participation requires at least 8 clinic visits over 8-12 weeks. To participate you must be 18-80 years old, be currently experiencing a depressive episode, and have had inadequate relief from at least 2 antidepressants in this episode. Compensation is provided. Principal Investigator: David V. Hamilton, MD.

Seeking healthy volunteers or those with COPD, cystic fibrosis, or history of smoking or radiation therapy treatments (ages 12-85) for an MRI study of how air moves in the lungs. The study involves inhaled hyperpolarized xenon and/or helium gas, spirometry, 6-minute-walk test, electrocardiogram, physical exam, chest CT and finger stick, depending on your qualifications. Study requires 1-3 visits of 2-3 hours each. All study related tests provided free. Compensation is provided.
