KITCHEN 39

At the end of a 2.1-mile driveway in Albemarle sits the home of Rod and Maggie Walker, who, with architect Peter LaBau, designed a nearly 4,000-square-foot property that incorporates nature—it utilizes seven kinds of wood from the property—and the view.

Two years of planning led to the eventual refinishing of designer Kathy Heiner’s home kitchen. It wasn’t that she was indecisive about what she wanted—quite the opposite. The luxury of having so much time prompted wow-factor finishes for the family space.

REAL STORY #2

Nurse, entrepreneur, wife, and mother, Shannon Turlip McElroy, was empowered by what she called 'The Monday Digest'—a weekly status report from her mortgage loan officer. Because of this, she had a clear picture of her buying power. It's not surprising that an active, growing family would partner with the UnBranch—a bank that doesn’t seem like a bank. At Bank of the James, our mortgage loan officers have access to conventional and not-so conventional mortgage resources to provide you with an array of options. You'll borrow with ease. IN THE NEWS

Calling all designers Prompted by recent tragic community events, local architecture firm Bushman Dreyfus Architects announced this fall its inaugural competition for design and ideas: Propose a “site-specific work of public art that will successfully embody values and aspirations of a diverse community.” This year’s site is located at the west end of the Downtown Mall, formerly part of historic Vinegar Hill neighborhood. The firm is launching the competition, in part, as a celebration of its 25 years of community involvement. BDA is responsible for such local structures as The City Center for Contemporary Arts, The Paramount Theater renovation, The Jefferson School City Center and the Senior Center at Belvedere. In that spirit, “Designs are encouraged to be transformative, contextual and dynamic,” according to a press release about the competition. Entries should exemplify the theme, “Charlottesville: Identity & Design,” and are due by February 2, 2018. A grand prize winner and three runners-up will be announced in early April 2018. BLUEPRINT

OFF THE BOARDS

A materials palette that is local in spirit and fact was used to transform a mountainside Albemarle cabin into a full-time dwelling: Bluestone paves the patio, while walls, created with rocks from the site itself, support new grassy terraces that aren’t lawns so much as modest moments of green that contrast with the mature forest floor. BILL MAUZY

T

he cabin sits on a steep Albemarle mountainside under a tall forest canopy. It was built in West Virginia, probably in the early 1800s; it was moved here in the 1970s, reconstructed and updated with basic conveniences like plumbing. Its owners used it only a few weeks per year as a vacation spot. Then, on a cold day in 2013, Joe Chipuk and Sara Szmania drove up the steep, switchbacking driveway. They’d relocated to Charlottesville and had noticed the property as soon as it entered the market. “It was pretty clear it was a special place,” says Szmania. They loved the solitude of the mountaintop perch and the sense of palpable history embodied in the house. Yet they also knew they’d have to make some changes if this were to be a full-time

dwelling, and those changes would have to start literally from the ground up. “Everything outside was quite steep,” says Szmania. There was virtually no usable outdoor space because of the slope. Bill Mauzy of Waterstreet Studio helped them to develop ideas about the transformations that were needed: more parking and better turnaround space for cars, sitting and dining areas near the house, a path approaching the front porch and storage for firewood and tools. “It was about designing it to be beautiful, but also practical,” says Chipuk—“making sure it felt like it should be here.” A suburban-style lawn clearly wouldn’t be appropriate, and pavement needed to be kept to a minimum. The driveway itself presented challenges: No gravel or concrete trucks could make it to the top during construction. All these constraints led to a materials palette that is local in spirit and fact, and ultimately very

appropriate to the character of the site and cabin. Dry-stacked stone walls create terraces; bluestone paves the patio; mulch and gravel paths blend with the surroundings. “One of the important things was to create a sense of transition from domestic spaces to forest,” says Mauzy. “Before, the forest came right up to the cabin. On three sides, we pushed the forest edge back, being careful to keep certain trees.” Szmania had an idea for what became the key outdoor living space: a sitting area on the side where the house’s fieldstone chimney towers overhead. “I’ve always been enamored of the chimney,” she says, adding that its natural texture is a contrast with the angular modern spaces in which she’d lived before. She and Chipuk had a favorite hike when they first came to Virginia, which ended at a lone chimney in the ruins of a homestead.

Cabin fever

In that spirit, she conceived of a second chimney, opposite and mirroring the first, to suggest a place where a summer kitchen had once stood, then burned down. The fireplace in this chimney would heat the seating area, and it would be A small barn built by paved with long rectangular sandstone pavers, Frank Joseph of to mimic wooden floor planks. They are planted with native creeping red fescue that’s soft underfoot and, left unmowed, grows into low shaggy humps. “The plantings emphasize the use of natives,” says Mauzy. “All the plants have the feel of plants you would find in the forest.” They also need to be wildlife-resistant and shade-loving, and they can’t be water-hungry, because there isn’t enough water pressure to irrigate on a site as elevated as this. Be key free

Linking up locks means flexibility and convenience By Shea Gibbs

Stay secure

KWIKSET

H

ome locking technology hadn’t changed much for more than a century—until a few years ago. The advent of the smart home gave folks the ability to take their front door security, and locks in general, out of the dark ages. Keyless entry houses are still buttoned up with the standard pin tumblers invented in the late 1800s, but homeowners are able to access them through a secure web connection from anywhere in the world. “We’re probably putting keyless entry in on 10 percent of all projects where we’re doing networking,” says Nick Falzman, CEO of local residential automation provider Appalachian Home Technologies. “Five years ago, it was more like 1 to 2 percent. It really wasn’t a great solution.”

Electronic lock providers such as Kwikset are responsible for keeping your encrypted keyless entry data safe.

Some homeowners might be wary of throwing their lock and key to the cloud, so first thing’s first: Is keyless entry secure? “You have all of your firewalls protecting you just as you would from any other cyber attack,” Falzman says. “All the information is encrypted, so you have a couple layers of defense.” Falzman says the responsibility for holding your lock data safe mostly falls on the electronic lock provider. And those companies, many of which are legacy firms like Schlage, Yale and Kwikset, keep everything on a secure server. Scott Megahan, owner of Albemarle Lock & Safe, is more old school than Falzman—his son handles most of the IT side of the business—and he’s somewhat skeptical of keyless entry tech. Fortunately, almost every system comes with a mechanical override, he says.

If you’re willing to open the door to keyless entry, convenience and customizability can be yours. Locking yourself

At Mr. Jefferson’s university, student dormitories are going keyless. With every door in each building accessible through a single hub, university admins can change access codes and allow or restrict entry at certain times with a mouse click. STEPHEN BARLING

out of the house will be a thing of the past, and parents can monitor the comings and goings of their kids. What’s more, Falzman says homeowners can set timers and access windows, giving temporary codes to housekeepers, handymen and the like. And keyless entry can be used to trigger a host of responses. “Other items can go off in the house. In my house, when I lock the front door it turns off all the lights and sets the HVAC to a certain temperature,” he says. “Unlocking the door can be a trigger to other things, like mixing you a drink. I am dead serious.” Indeed, Falzman says keyless entry can be a gateway network. He’ll see homeowners buy a keyless lock on a whim and end up linking all their home electronics. For those who go all the way with networking, he recommends using a single app, such as Control4, to manage everything around the home.

Pushing forward While keyless home entry has grown a

lot in the last several years, it has a long way to go to keep up with the industry leader, according to Megahan. “Cars have changed immensely,” he says. “You are seeing keyless entry on everything, even lower-end cars. Every three to six months, you have to learn something new. It changes that fast.” That’s good news for homeowners, Megahan says, as it’s driving the technology further and further. For Falzman, the user-friendliness of the apps and networking tools throughout the home are what stand to change keyless entry the most. As people become more and more comfortable putting their locks on a network, he says you’ll see keyless options throughout the home —on gun closets, medicine chests, liquor cabinets and storage rooms. Oh, and those unlocking mechanisms tied to one’s unique biology you see in TV and movies? Those are hardly science fiction, according to Megahan, and they could be paired with keyless devices. “We’ve done several biometric locks,” he says. “Retina is a great way to go.” ABODE 19

Wall this way

Are painted murals making a comeback? By Caite White

Plus, it affords more flexibility in terms of motif, scale and color. Akhavein contends that painted murals look good anywhere in the house, but a particularly fun application is in powder rooms, where they can bring big drama. And, she says, walls don’t have to be the only thing you paint. “Elaborately painted ceilings and doors can create a striking effect.”

esign trends come and go. And, sometimes, they come back again. Take, for instance, wall murals. Interior designer Karena Akhavein says she’s been getting more and more requests for 21st century versions from clients of her Gordonsville studio, Pebble Hill Design. “In grand Virginia estates, it was the tradition to use pictorial wallpaper in the dining room,” says Akhavein. “This wallpaper is usually made in Europe, and is prohibitively expensive, so a similar effect can be achieved with a painted mural.” But not the cheesy (read: trompe l’oeil, with 3D-like windows peeking out over a beautiful faux vista, or those in children’s rooms) kind. Akhavein, who in her own home painted a grisaille (that is, tone-on-tone) landscape in the dining area, recommends everything from Chinoiserie and Delftware patterns to distressed or smoked faux finishes. At Pebble Hill, she uses Photoshop to help clients visualize what a wall mural will look like in their space. But are they something a homeowner should DIY? “That depends!” says Akhavein. “If you are artistic and not afraid to paint over your mistakes, have at it.” That’s one benefit of a wall mural—unlike wallpaper, you don’t have to navigate a removal process to course-correct.

Perched high in the surrounding mountains of Crozet is the stunning and solitudinous modern home of Rod and Maggie Walker. Located in Albemarle County and overlooking the Sugar Hollow Reservoir, the 1,500-acre property is accessed by way of a lengthy country road that, after winding through forested hills and over single-lane bridges, arrives at the estate’s 2.1mile driveway. Climbing more than 1,000 feet—and delivering a Blue Ridge Parkway-worthy vista of the valley below—the drive opens onto a broad meadow bowled in on three sides by the high forested slopes of mountains, including the Shenandoah National Park. Nestled atop a knoll just below the peak of Middle Mountain, like some old-world estate handed down from generations immemorial, the Walker House appears to have been birthed by the landscape itself. According to Peter LaBau, the Charlottesvillebased architect who brought the design to its completion, the effect is both desired and inten-

By Eric Wallace Photography by Peter LaBau

The Walkers’ great room—encompassing the kitchen, dining and living spaces— is unified by the use of wood, from the ceiling’s white pine rafters to the hickory floors. “We sometimes refer to the house as Seven Timbers, for the seven different types of wood we used,” says homeowner Rod Walker.

tional. “Rod and Maggie wanted the home to give visitors the sense it had been there forever,” he says. “There are no other visible structures around and, as it’s such an overwhelmingly beautiful natural landscape, we wanted to be sure the home fit naturally.” Toward achieving that result, the Walkers and LaBau chose to implement a design incorporating as many materials harvested from the site as possible. Inspired by early 20th century society estates that once speckled the hillsides of what is now the SNP, as well as the architecture of the countryside of France and Normandy, the Walkers opted for a stone and stucco exterior surrounded by terraces and crowned by an array of steeply peaked roofs with slate-style shingles. “Originally, we were going to bring in the stone from elsewhere,” says LaBau. “However, we realized there was all this amazing Catoctin formation green bluestone available right here, and we decided that would provide the natural look we were looking for.” Gathering the stone from the site, a team of expert masons worked to shape and affix it to a shell of Insulating Concrete Form block, making

the home’s walls 18 inches wide. While the Walkers loved the structural integrity, they were concerned the thickness might lend the house a fortress-like feeling, so they avoided tucking the home into the hillside. “We wanted it closer to the edge of the downhill slope, that way we could be out there with all the wildlife,” says Rod. “It was important for us to feel like we’re right here in the middle of everything that’s going on.” In other words, the couple wanted the home to have the feel of a mountain sanctuary, a quiet outpost lying at the heart of the ever-changing mountain seasons, from which they could observe the shifts and movements of their wild neighbors—the trees, birds, deer, turkeys, bears and so on. Because there are such beautiful views, unlike a traditional French country-style home—which would feature fewer and smaller windows with thick muntins—the house’s numerous windows are large and unembellished. Focusing on the trim and surrounding features, LaBau compares each opening to the frame of a magnificent painting: No matter where you are in the house, CONTINUED ON PAGE 33

the view is always prominent and presented in an interesting way. Two of his favorite examples are the great room’s French doors, which open onto a large terrace, and the master bedroom’s south-facing projecting bay. In addition to the stone, timber for rafters, hardwood floors, cabinets, trim, archways and wainscoting was harvested on-site as well. Similarly, procuring the wood was a bit of a process. Working with LaBau to determine applications and quantities, Rod would have his farm manager sustainably harvest a given variety of trees from unseen nooks throughout the vast, wooded property. Meanwhile, a sawmill was set up near the building site, with some completed pieces being sent elsewhere for kiln drying. Outside, locust was used for window and door surrounds, and the front door itself is made from repurposed chestnut beams that had been stored for nearly a century in an old barn on the property. On the large screened-in porch, there are locust supports and an extravagant, timberframed mortise and tenon rafter system. In the great room, there are hickory floors and whitepine rafters (which were hung green and allowed to settle). A wide walnut arch inspired by a chapel on the coast of Maine spans the study, complementing a plank ceiling and wainscoting of the same persuasion. Rod’s office—which opens upward to a second-story library and a pyramidshaped tower with a wood-planked walnut ceiling—features sycamore cabinets trimmed in dark walnut. A third-story attic observatory is surrounded by windows on all sides and its walls are trimmed in sassafras and cedar paneling. “In honor of all this, we sometimes refer to the house as Seven Timbers, for the seven different types of wood we used,” explains Rod, who adds that sourcing materials from the property is a huge point of pride and a conversation starter as well. Another point of pride was the local artisans LaBau employed to help make the Walkers’ house a reality. There was Nelson County builder Matt Robb, of Robb Construction; Madisonbased third-generation mason, Jeff Cianciotti; Waynesboro blacksmith Dale Morse, who designed custom iron railings for the terraces, hinges and hardware for doors, a hammered iron handrail for the stairwell leading to the secondstory, and more. Three innovative woodworkers and cabinet-makers—including Chris Kerr and the late Tom Pastore, both from Madison, as well as Shawn Burkholder, who is from Stuarts Draft—whose cabinet and casement work is featured throughout the home. Lastly, timberframers George Allman and Pablo Gonzalez, of Gordonsville-based Timbersmiths, Inc. “You really have to give credit to the Walkers for their willingness to use so many talented local

craftsmen to ensure this project got done just right,” says LaBau. “There was a real air of collaboration and creativity, and, because of that, the results are something that is astoundingly unique.” Beyond daily living, the Walkers enjoy sharing their give-or-take 4,000-square-foot home with family and guests. With three grown children and a big extended family, the Walkers say they love to entertain and get everyone together in their home all at once. “While there are just two

guest rooms, there are lots of additional sleeping options found throughout the home,” says LaBau, referencing the use of pull-out sofas and a variety of sleeping nooks. According to the Walkers, it was always important for them to be able to share this space —not to mention the grounds and its spectacular views—with those they love, and to establish traditions they hope will last for generations to come. In a Bellair kitchen, high-gloss finishes set the tone

DESIGN TIME

As a professional designer, Kathy Heiner is familiar with all the twists and turns of the renovation process. So, when it came time to redo the kitchen in the Bellair house she’s shared with her sons since 2012, she appreciated having the luxury of time to think about what she wanted. “Lori Randle and I probably planned this for two years,” she says, referring to the Cabinet Solutions designer who was her collaborator. “One of 40 ABODE

the things that’s a benefit to waiting is you have a lot more time to think about how you live in it.” The kitchen didn’t need major redrawing—the appliances and windows stayed put—but Heiner wanted to update its look and knew it could be a lot more functional. With Randle’s help, she found many ways to increase storage and ergonomics. Though it’s not at all small, because of its layout the kitchen can’t easily accommodate an island or a bar. Instead, Heiner decided on a

“One trend I’m loving is high-gloss finishes on cabinets. Before, the cabinets were antique white, and I like a bright kitchen. It can make you feel more awake.” KATHY HEINER

Now, the accent wall is a quietly stunning focal point that accommodates both ample display space and enough deep storage drawers to serve as a pantry. “Originally, I had barn doors planned” for the open shelves, she says, but changed her mind once the shelves were in place. “I loved the clean, simple lines.” Colors work subtly together. The accent wall, like the white cabinets, got a high-gloss finish: Hague Blue by Farrow & Ball. It picks up the blues hiding in the marble countertops and in the blue-white wall color, Farrow & Ball’s Cabbage White. Heiner had originally planned to display cookbooks on the blue shelving but decided to use that space to show off her favorite pottery, some collected years ago by her mother and some she’s just discovered on Instagram. The other substantial change was the addition of a large Thermador refrigerator/freezer/wine cooler where a run of cabinets had been. Yet the overall storage space grew, thanks to new cabinets that are almost ceiling-height, and various clever cabinetry features suggested by Randle. For example, spices and tea now live in a tall pull-out rack next to the wine cooler, and dog food gets its own cabinet right next to the dog dish.

simple table—a vintage Florence Knoll piece with a Carrara marble top. The table sits in front of an accent wall of built-in pantry cabinets and open shelves. In its old life, this was a plain wall with two doors; one opened to a pantry and one to a dumbwaiter. Contractors Gary and Adam Easter punched through these into an adjoining bedroom, stole a few inches of space, and installed built-ins that look like they’ve been there forever.

“There’s a lot more storage in here now, but it feels bigger,” Heiner says. And it feels more ergonomic to have slightly higher countertops. She changed the finish of the wooden floor from walnut-brown to ebony and liked it so much that she continued the change in neighboring rooms. The modern palette also includes Super White polished marble countertops, a crackleglaze subway tile backsplash and lacquered white Shaker cabinets. “One trend I’m loving is highgloss finishes on cabinets,” Heiner says. “Before, the cabinets were antique white, and I like a bright kitchen. It can make you feel more awake.” To that end, she made sure to install several light sources—recessed ceiling lights, undercabinet lighting and a shiny pendant from Barn Light Electric. “Having a more subtle wall color can allow the art to really pop,” says Heiner, who has an extensive collection. Pieces by Abby Kasonik, Clay Witt, Ted Turner, Frankie Slaughter and others hang in the kitchen, along with a large Mexican otomi panel adorned with colorful birds. The finished room is crisp and not too formal. “We spend a ton of time at this table,” says Heiner. “It’s more than just meals.”

The kitchen’s accent wall got a highgloss finish with Hague Blue by Farrow & Ball, which picks up the blues hiding in the room’s marble countertops and in the blue-white wall color (Farrow & Ball’s Cabbage White).
