But before joining the working world, Holly and her fellow furry graduates had been matched with volunteer puppy raisers, who trained them in their homes for 12 months. When the dogs turned 1, they returned to SDV for advanced training and an assessment, which determined the right client for each dog. Service Dogs of Virginia has three program tracks for its dogs—physical assistance, autism support and diabetic alert—and does not charge clients for the animals, instead relying on grants and donations. The case involving [Stephen] Dalton Baril and the rape of a fellow University of Virginia student [“Gubernatorial grandson: Rape charges certified to grand jury,” November 22-28] shows many common patterns seen throughout rapes on college campuses, such as a lack of consent and the consumption of alcohol. According to the Department of Justice, rape is currently defined as “The penetration, no matter how slight, of the vagina or anus with any body part or object, or oral penetration by a sex organ of another person, without the consent of the victim.”

This case illuminates a common pattern amongst rapes, a lack of consent. Many times the male does not know that he is committing rape due to a lack of communication with the other party. In this case, we see Baril’s lack of knowledge that his actions are considered rape by his text “What was a bad decision? I hope you had fun. I did.”

Another pattern seen through this case is the consumption of alcohol by the woman who is raped. A third of women (33 percent) that experience rape are too incapacitated to provide consent. While this article does not state the extent of this victim’s incapacitation, it highlights the abundant appearance of alcohol when looking at rape crimes.

In cases like this one, the risk of the perpetrator committing another rape in the future must be highly considered. This needs to be considered because only 7 percent of males commit 90 percent of rapes on college campuses. Each male from that 7 percent taken away from the campus will greatly decrease the overall number of rapes occurring on that campus.

Rape case close to home alarming Having grown up in Charlottesville and currently attending UVA, I find [Stephen Dalton] Baril’s rape case quite alarming [“Gubernatorial grandson: Rape charges certified to grand jury,” November 22-28]. Although this is not the first rape case that has occurred in Charlottesville, it resonates deeply, taking place so close to home, by a Virginia [student], in an area I may be living in next year. The fact that the rape took place in February and the defendant’s appointment with the grand jury is scheduled for December is additionally aggravating. In taking so long, the trial only seems to be adding to the pain of the victim, M.H. This was clearly seen in her distressed conduct earlier this year, in running out of the courtroom in tears. I particularly want to address the way the participants of the trial are described in the article. M.H. is labeled as an “alleged victim,” which bears an underlying negative connotation doubting her legitimacy, and is also described to have “erupted in tears,” making her seem somewhat frail and further dismissing her reliability as a source. The author also gives Baril the typical entitled white male fraternity member characterization by describing him as the grandson of a Republican governor of Virginia. The text message correspondences between him and M.H. indicate his obliviousness to his actions being rape or assault, which is the truly frightening part.

On the heels of Peaceable Farm owner Anne Shumate Williams being convicted of 25 counts of animal cruelty in Orange County, the Louisa County Sheriff ’s Office is hoping to save about 500 animals in what appears to be a similar case. This time, goats, emus, sheep and a peacock are among the neglected critters. Charges are pending for the 77-year-old and her two adult sons who run the farm.

ince the August 12 Unite the Right rally that left three people dead, Charlottesville residents have asked where the police were that day and why Fourth Street was open so a neo-Nazi from Ohio could plow into a group of counterprotesters, injuring dozens and killing Heather Heyer. The release of former U.S. attorney Tim Heaphy’s 207-page report last week offered some answers, with the use of the word “failure” 44 times.

Police were stationed behind barricades and while they were not given “stand down” instructions, said Heaphy at a December 1 press conference, they were told to intervene only in instances of serious violence.

And the report confirmed what had been going around since August 12: A school resource officer was stationed alone at the intersection of Fourth Street NE and Market Street. When an unlawful assembly was declared and protesters flooded from Emancipation Park into Market Street to clash with counterprotesters, the officer feared for her safety and was relieved of her post—leaving only a wooden sawhorse to block Fourth Street.

Heaphy pulled in four additional fulltime lawyers, reviewed half a million documents and interviewed 150 witnesses, racking up what would be $1.5 million in legal fees, had his firm, Hunton & Williams, not agreed to undertake the review for $350,000.

“It was truly an independent review,” said Heaphy. “I wouldn’t have undertaken it if it was not.” He stressed that he was “quite critical of the city.”

Heaphy outlined three major areas of failure: preparation, communication and protection of public safety.

The plan was to have the rally declared an unlawful assembly, and one officer told Heaphy that during the brawling on Market Street, police Chief Al Thomas said, “Let them fight for a little while” because that makes it “easier to declare an unlawful assembly.”

Thomas comes under additional fire in the report for failing to “exercise functional control of VSP forces despite his role as overall incident commander.” As the rally drew closer, he displayed a “hunkered down” mentality in refusing to consider alternate plans, and insisted Albemarle County police refused to offer assistance, an account county officers contradicted.

During the course of Heaphy’s investigation, Thomas attempted to limit the information Heaphy requested, deleted text messages—as did other command staff—and used a personal email account to conduct official police business, then denied doing so in response to a Freedom of Information Act request, according to the report.

CPD—a fear of retribution for criticism,” says the review.

The attitude of city police, says Heaphy, was, “we’ve got this.” And while some officers talked to their peers in other cities that had experienced violent clashes, that information did not factor into the city’s operational plan.

Because city cops were behind barricades—and not in the middle of protesters—when it became necessary to don protective gear, they had to retreat to another location to put on equipment some of them had never used before, says the report.

The alignment of police—and the lack of any being stationed at points of ingress and egress at the park—was a “recipe for disaster,” Heaphy said.

Virginia State Police sent 600 officers, helicopters and equipment, yet had its own operational plan that was not shared with city police. The state police were there to protect Emancipation Park, says Heaphy, and one VSP commander said about the violence around the park, “We’re not going into that mess,” according to Heaphy.

City Council, led by Mayor Mike Signer, also had a role in further complicating matters by caving to constituent pressure and making a last-minute decision to move the rally to McIntire Park, despite nearly unanimous advice that such a move would not withstand a legal challenge.

By interjecting itself into what “should be an operational decision,” Heaphy said, council created “further uncertainty” about where the event would be held, and spread police resources even further.

“City Council should have been the mouthpiece in saying what the law says,” Heaphy said.

The fundamental goals of government, said Heaphy, are to preserve free speech and public safety. “The city failed and it was not able to protect that fundamental right,” he said.

motions ran high at the December 4 City Council meeting that began at 7pm when Councilor Kristin Szakos placed two paper plates piled with homemade cookies at the podium and ended at midnight.

Mayor Mike Signer opened the meeting, during which former federal prosecutor Tim Heaphy presented his $350,000 independent review of the summer’s white supremacist rallies, with a plea for civility.

But anyone who’s been following council meetings since August 12, knows that Signer would have needed a Christmas miracle for that wish to come true. And he didn’t get it.

Heaphy and the councilors were continually criticized, heckled and shouted over, but the first roar of laughter from the shoulder-to-shoulder crowd came when Heaphy announced that members of the Charlottesville Police Department told him and his Hunton & Williams legal team that they felt prepared for August 12 because they had worked the annual Wertland Street block party and dignitary visits, like when the Dalai Lama came to town in October 2012.

They hadn’t, however, coordinated with Virginia State Police, and most of them had never used riot gear or had relevant training, Heaphy said.

And though Heaphy detailed several instances of a lack of police intervention on August 12—and an apparent order for police not to act “unless someone’s getting killed”—the crowd erupted in caustic applause when he showed a still taken from

a police body camera of an officer coming between a white supremacist and an antiracist activist.

“Y’all fed us to those wolves,” interjected someone from the crowd when the attorney discussed police behavior.

As Heaphy wrapped up his presentation, which lasted an hour longer than scheduled, members of the crowd—some identifying with activist group SolidarityCville—began raising protest signs. The largest one read, “Blood on your hands,” with “Abolish the police” and “Resign Signer” also making an appearance.

Vice-mayor Wes Bellamy, whom some blame for summoning the neo-Nazis with his initial call in March 2016 to remove the General Robert E. Lee monument from then-Lee Park, began his comments with an apology.

“I’m sorry,” he said. “We let you all down. I think it’s important we acknowledge that.”

And trying to speed the meeting along, he said, “For $350,000, I got two questions: One, how do we stop the Nazis from coming back. And secondly, how do we protect our citizens?”

Heaphy replied he didn’t have the answers, and the crowd erupted again, asking the attorney what he was paid almost half a million dollars for. Heaphy reminded attendees several times that his job was to review what went right and wrong during the summer of hate.

About 40 members of the public spoke at the meeting, with Dave Ghamandi firing up the crowd as he roasted the police, Chief Al Thomas, City Manager Maurice Jones, Heaphy and Signer.

t’s a day those living in Charlottesville would rather not relive. That it left three people dead and countless injured, or that it was shut down before it was scheduled to begin last August 12 has not stopped Jason Kessler from planning a second Charlottesville rally—on the one-year anniversary of Unite the Right.

While many may wonder why the homegrown right-winger, who’s been denounced by several former conservative comrades, would bring that kind of hate back to Charlottesville, he explains in a November 29 post on his blog, Real News w/ Jason Kessler: “I simply will not allow these bastards to use the one year anniversary of the Charlottesville government violating a federal judge’s order and the U.S. Constitution, in conjunction with violent Antifa groups, to further demonize our activists.”

For citizens in Charlottesville still recovering from this summer’s violent invasion of neo-Nazis, the reaction was one of shock and dismay.

“Immediate repulsion,” says activist Don Gathers when he heard about Kessler’s anniversary plan. “People say they throw up in their own mouth. That’s what it was like.”

He wonders, “What kind of mentality does it take to have that kind of gall to say you’re going to do that again, especially on that same weekend?”

City spokesperson Miriam Dickler has confirmed that Kessler’s application, filed November 27, for what he calls a “rally against government civil rights abuse and failure to follow security plans for political dissidents,” is under review, and says the city has no further comment.

The organizer, currently awaiting trial for perjury in Albemarle County, says 2018 Unite the Right attendees oppose any changes to Emancipation Park and are “memorializing the sacrifices made by political dissidents in Lee Park August 12, 2017.”

But on his blog, Kessler claims that this one, called Back to Charlottesville, will be different.

“At Unite the Right, I was just coming into my own as an event organizer and had faith in the Charlottesville Police Department to abide by the terms of the security arrangement and keep hostile groups separate,” he writes. “Obviously, that is no longer the case.

authorities were keeping the security arrangements secret so that hostile groups like Antifa would not learn of the plans and therefore create a security risk, I now understand that they did that to screw us over.”

Kessler, also known for his unfavorable reaction to being called a “crybaby” by local attorney Jeff Fogel, says he already has lawyers lined up for his latest event—because when he organized “UTR 1.0,” he was “flying by the seat of [his] pants”—and now when “Charlottesville rejects [his] permit, as [he] fully expects them to do,” he says “we will push back.”

The pro-white advocate also promises better organization at this rally than the one where white supremacists and counterprotesters clashed in the streets with weapons, shields and helmets.

“I don’t like that I didn’t have a megaphone on August 11 to warn marchers that Antifa were waiting for us at the base of the Thomas Jefferson statue. …[The] morning of August 12, I should have been notified that police didn’t show up to escort our VIPs. That was a huge red flag that I should have been able to use to warn people.”

The new permit requires special event liability insurance of at least $1 million. Insurance Kessler obtained online for the 2017 event was canceled after underwriters learned more about the Unite the Right rally.

Insurance professional Harry Landers says, “If anyone understands all the facts of who he is and what he’s doing, the chances of him obtaining insurance are nil.”

“You and Signer are two crony gangsters spit out by UVA law school,” he said to Heaphy, also calling him a “glorified ambulance chaser” who “profited off tragedy and death.” Ghamandi said Jones is afraid to fire Thomas because he’ll drag Jones down, too.

Councilor-elect Nikuyah Walker also took the podium to address centuries of racism, systemic oppression and public chatter that Jones and Thomas could be held accountable for the

weapons and the length of events. Kessler is requesting a two-day permit for a festival from 7am to 11pm Saturday, August 11, 2018, and from 6am to 11pm Sunday.

The announcement came on the eve of the release of former U.S. attorney Tim Heaphy’s independent review of the city’s handling of the summer of hate.

Though traveling outside the country, Mayor Mike Signer says in an email, “I believe public safety should be our paramount concern, with the benefit of the recommendations from the Heaphy report and upcoming advice from our counsel on how to reform our permitting for public events.”

Says former mayor Dave Norris, “The city needs to revisit its ability to manage situations where there’s no assurance of peaceable assembly. This is an organizer who has clearly demonstrated a propensity for unpeaceable assembly.” And because of that, Norris says Kessler has ceded his right to hold public events in Charlottesville.

Evan McLaren, the excutive director of Richard Spencer’s National Policy Institute who was arrested at Unite the Right for failing to disperse after police declared it an unlawful assembly, says his slew of white nationalists won’t be there. “We prefer to focus on our own activity, and to take part in events over which we have direct control,” he says.

“We need to prove to them that we are the good guys,” Kessler writes. And reiterating his “commitment to nonviolence,” he quotes Ecclesiastes 3:8: “There is a time for war and a time for peace.”

Says Gathers, “White supremacy: the gift that keeps on giving.”

But perhaps tensions were at their highest boiling point at the conclusion of Heaphy’s presentation, when he said, “Things could have been worse.” Without missing a beat, someone in the crowd fired back, “How dare you?”

WVPT and WHTJ public television stations merge, say declining revenues not a factor

or years, two out-of-town public television stations fought to claim status as Charlottesville’s “local” PBS station. Now they both can say that.

Harrisonburg’s WVPT is being consolidated into Commonwealth Public Broadcasting Corporation, the parent company of Richmond-based WHTJ, and the merger will offer local viewers two additional stations.

Instead of duplicate offerings of “Nova” or “Masterpiece Theater,” Charlottesville PBSers will have a counterprogramming channel, where they can watch “Masterpiece” on a night other than Sunday. And it’ll be harder than ever to get the children to sleep with a 24/7 PBS Kids station.

Both stations have seen declines in revenue in recent years. WVPT saw a total revenue drop of more than $1 million, according to its 2014 and 2015 990 tax forms.

And WHTJ reported a nearly $400,000 revenue deficit in 2015.

That, says Commonwealth’s board chair Todd Stansbury, had little to do with the merger. While some PBS stations around the country are struggling to keep the lights on, he says, the two companies here “have been pretty healthy over prior years.”

He compares it to fixing the roof while the sun is shining rather than when it’s raining. The merger, he says, solves two problems in Charlottesville while expanding to nearly 1 million homes in central Virginia.

“It eliminates market confusion” about two independently owned public television stations in the same market that at

times has even confused donors, says Stansbury. And by eliminating the overlap in programming, the spare station will offer alternatives.

“Charlottesville is going to get a very big bang for its buck out of this,” he enthuses.

Stansbury, who lives in Charlottesville, acknowledges that these are tougher times for PBS stations than back in the days when public television was one of four broadcast networks available.

The new entity wants to be a content creator delivering on broadband, which is how a lot of people now do their viewing, he says. “We still have a large part of our market receiving it over the air,” he says.

The merger “will give us the resources we need while maintaining services for our legacy viewers.”

The idea of combining has been talked about for years, says Stansbury, but it helped that Stephen Davis, chair of WVPT’s Shenandoah Valley Educational Television Corporation board, also lives in Charlottesville.

Once the merger is complete in the spring, WVPT staffers will become employees of Commonwealth Public Broadcasting while it decides “the highest and best use of personnel and facilities,” says Stansbury.

Singer-songwriter Terri Allard is getting ready to premiere the 11th season of “Charlottesville Inside Out,” which she hosts and co-produces, as well as being WHTJ’s community engagement manager. She sees the union as a “win-win” for Charlottesville, giving viewers greater flexibility in “what they watch and when they watch it.”

As it turned out, as long as customers could access the internet, they didn’t really care who their provider was, according to Nachbar.

He adds, “Neutrality advocates call upon the same few examples of carrier discrimination, but generally networks have remained open without neutrality rules.”

Ting, a locally based internet service provider, joined 200 companies including Twitter, Reddit and Airbnb, in sending a letter to FCC chair Ajit Pai on November 27 to encourage protecting current net neutrality rules. The commission is expected to vote 3-2 in favor of giving net neutrality the axe.

Monica Webb, a spokesperson for Ting, which has a long history of supporting an open internet and encouraging others to take action, says even if the vote passes, the company won’t change the way it operates.

“In terms of how it affects our business, Ting will uphold the principles of net neutrality, whether we are required to or not,” says Webb. “It’s simply the right thing to do.”

There’s no place like home for the holidays

hether you’re streaming cat videos or brushing up on the Rohingya Muslim crackdown in Myanmar, net neutrality requires an internet service provider that allows consumers to do both at the same speed.

On December 14, the five people who make up the Federal Communications Commission will vote on whether to end net neutrality, giving ISPs the ability to fix the competition, so to speak, by loading the pages of their choosing faster than others, or prioritizing customers.

That could mean dictating how quickly a certain news story loads, or controlling the media users can consume by not loading it at all. Or, as another example, Comcast could slow down the access speed to Netflix in order to promote Xfinity TV, its own streaming service.

But Paul G. Mahoney, a current University of Virginia School of Law professor and former dean from 2008-2016, says losing net neutrality might not be such a bad thing.

“I don’t think relaxing the current net neutrality rules will harm consumers, and might possibly help them,” Mahoney says, because it will reduce internet service providers’ regulatory compliance costs, and some of the cost reduction could be passed on to consumers, he says.

Current net neutrality rules diminish new internet service and pricing models, and the FCC chair has argued that it would be better to allow experimentation and permit antitrust regulators to stop any that aren’t competitive, says Mahoney.

“This is a reasonable argument and points to another possible benefit for consumers,” he adds.

When then-UVA law professor Tim Wu coined the phrase “net neutrality” in 2003, Mahoney says many people thought internet content would always be decentralized—which was not the case.

The main issue at stake now, he says, is how much Netflix, Facebook, Amazon and Google will pay ISPs to stream content.

“The government does not need to get involved in that battle,” he says.

Thomas Nachbar, a UVA law professor and senior fellow at the school’s Center for National Security Law, calls the current debate nuanced, and agrees with his colleague’s stance on government involvement.

“Both sides have a point,” he says. “On the one hand, we don’t want communica-

tions carriers to have too much power. ... and on the other, it’s probably not a great idea for the government to be in the network design business.”

And in today’s debate, Nachbar says “both sides list a parade of horribles, but we’ve been living under a back-and-forth regime of greater and lesser neutrality for two decades without wild swings in how the internet works, despite the regulatory shifts.”

The debate first sparked in the late ’90s and early 2000s, about whether a carrier could prevent a consumer from using an independent internet service provider. The FCC said yes, taking a non-neutrality stance.

“And what happened?” asks Nachbar.

“Not much.”

The world-renowned musicians can hold audiences rapt with the passion and delicacy of their playing. And yet without fail, when they rest their bows between movements the concert hall will erupt in a chorus of coughing and sputtering of near-tubercular intensity. It’s as if the concertgoers are reading from a score marking the precise moment when their noises will be most impactful.

The women who are speaking out now have seized a powerful moment, too. The tone has been building since January 21 when almost 3 million of them descended on Washington, D.C., and hundreds of U.S. and foreign cities for the Women’s March. The stunned silence of November 8 was quickly answered by a crescendo of fed-up women who refused to sit by any longer while their bodies were insulted and their rights hijacked.

And it hasn’t been about just calling out sexual misconduct by powerful men— though it’s not not about that either, thank you “Access Hollywood.” In Virginia, a record number of women—51—competed in House of Delegates primaries. Moreover, last July USA Today, citing Emily’s List, the nonprofit that helps elect prochoice Democratic females, reported that 16,000 women had expressed an interest in running for office. As the Charlottesville City Council race demonstrated, women will no longer wait their turn to speak.

Suburban female voters were the deciding factor in last month’s statewide races in Virginia, too. Many who handed Ralph Northam the governor’s office said they were responding to the president’s equivocations after the killing and mayhem of August 12. But past that, plenty of women had had enough of assemblymen, yes men,

who vote to defund Planned Parenthood, discriminate against transgender people and mandate transvaginal probing.

Returning for a moment to sexual harassment, another form of unwanted transvaginal probing, if you will: Like at a classical music concert, there remains the question of why those affected didn’t do something earlier. Must that guy wait until the cello solo to unwrap his lozenge, and why couldn’t the victims of Roger/ Bill/Harvey/Charlie/Louis/Mark/Matt/ etc./etc./etc. have spoken out sooner?

Answer: They did speak up. The accounts that make it into the reputable press are corroborated by folks the victims spoke to at the time (even if not the human resources manager).

In my own media career, I can count at least three instances when I informed managers at the highest level about sexual harassment incidents others had shared with me. In one instance, the perpetrator didn’t deny the claim when confronted.

Instead he teared up and lamented that perhaps he wasn’t the leader he professed to be. His punctured ego was his biggest concern. Today he remains a high-ranking local media executive. The woman left the business long ago. But if she came forward with her account, I could back her up.

Yes, Virginia, it’s a big noise—like a longstoppered steam valve being released—but not necessarily a new sound. In the past weeks, we’ve learned of some agitation in the Oval Office about who was or wasn’t approached to be Time Magazine’s Person of the Year. At press time the issue was still under wraps (pub date is December 6), but I know who I would’ve nominated: 2017 Women’s March organizers Linda Sarsour, Tamika Mallory, Carmen Perez and Bob Bland. They were early conductors in this symphony of outrage. Sadly, we’re a long way from hearing the final note.

tanding at a waist-high, cork-topped work table in her West Main Street design studio, Kim “Kylla” Dylla measures an arm’s length of white thread and uses her teeth to snip it from the spool. She pinches a curved sewing needle between her silver-ringed forefinger and thumb and slides the thread through the needle’s narrow eye before using its point to attach a blackened metal chain to the chest pocket of a white denim vest.

A Siouxsie and the Banshees song emanates at low volume from a bluetooth speaker on the carpeted floor, mingling with the soft whir and clack of a sewing machine from the next room, where Dylla’s sewing assistant (or “stichin’ vixen”), Loryn Awesome, assembles a pair of white and gold spandex trunks that Dylla designed to match the vest.

Dylla, clad in studded black leather ankle boots, black skinny jeans, a black band tank top and black denim vest, works the needle through the denim and around the chain with a nimble hand. It’s already quarter past three in the afternoon, and she has about an hour before she has to be in her car, en route to the post office on 29 North with the custom-made vest, trunks and matching knee pads, which will be shipped overnight to California to professional wrestler Will “WillPower” Hobbs.

As far as embellishments go, chains are easy to add to a garment, Dylla explains as she stitches; the same goes for patches (Hobbs requested a patch of his hashtag, #willpower, be stitched across the rear of his wrestling trunks). Things like bones, bullets, spikes and studs are more difficult to apply, Dylla says, but she’s adept at those, too.

In fact, she’s more practiced with hammering studs into distressed leather than she is stitching metallic spandex, because for years, the 34-year-old has been making custom stage wear for some of the world’s most famous heavy-metal musicians, among them Machine Head, Cradle of Filth, King

She’s also designed for more mainstream, non-metal rockers like Arnel Pineda of Journey and Amos Heller, a Charlottesville native who plays bass in Taylor Swift’s band. And Hobbs isn’t Dylla’s only wrestling client— she makes entrance costumes and ring wear for an arsenal of World Wrestling Entertainment performers, too.

“The power of wardrobe and fashion is transformative,” says Dylla. “When you put on a costume, or when you put on that piece of clothing that really makes you feel like a star, it transforms you not only in the eyes of the people that you are performing for, but internally, it gives you confidence.” When someone slips a Kylla Custom Rock Wear jacket over his shoulders, she hopes he feels like a rock star, whether he’s walking to the store for a loaf of bread or picking up an axe to shred for thousands of headbangers.

“That’s what I have to give people,” she says.

Before Dylla designed clothes for heavy-metal heavyweights, she listened to their music.

As a teen in the Hampton Roads area, Dylla and her friends went to goth and industrial clubs. Through that scene, Dylla says she became “obsessed with finding underground music. It was always about finding the thing no one had listened to before, that sounded more heavy and more evil.”

The heaviest, most evil-sounding stuff she found while trading tapes with other metalheads was Norwegian black metal, with its satanic- and pagan-themed lyrics growled over the sound of heavily distorted guitars, music that “sounded like it was recorded on a four-track in a basement in Oslo.”

“I loved it,” Dylla says, grinning. “I just jumped into the deep end of metal stuff; I didn’t have any gateway bands.”

Eventually, though, she got into other types of metal—regular old heavy metal, thrash metal, doom metal—and started listening to Iron Maiden, her favorite band of all time. Metal is a niche scene, but its fans are among the most dedicated out there. “Like, no one’s just casually into Slayer,” Dylla says.

But there’s good reason for it: Metal is a fairly technical genre. Metal musicians are often virtuoso players who compose structurally complicated songs played fast and in unusual time signatures. What’s more, the songs often exist in a mythology that the band has created for itself. Metal isn’t just music to listen to—it’s a world to step into.

Not long after Dylla started listening to metal, she got into performing it. Classical voice lessons taught her how to control and properly use her diaphragm while singing, and while listening to bands like Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse and Obituary in her car, she experimented with vocal techniques and sounds until she figured out that if she used her diaphragm to push air through a “sort of whisper” in her throat, what came out of her mouth was a dark, primal growl.

Dylla started making her own clothes when she was a teen, too. A self-described “classic goth kid,” she couldn’t find clothes she liked, and what she did like, she couldn’t afford. So she made her own, usually out of repurposed material from clothes she found in thrift stores. Dylla’s mother taught her to sew when she was young, but the first piece Dylla patterned, cut and sewed on her own— with some guidance from a friend’s older sister—was a corset. Corsets, with their panels, boning, laces (or buckles) and specific measurements, are notoriously difficult to make, but completing the challenging garment set Dylla on an open path to design, pattern and sew just about anything she wanted.

After graduating from UVA in 2005 with degrees in computer science and art, Dylla worked on the Rome Reborn project through UVA’s Institute for Advanced Technology in the Humanities. At night, she sang (and screamed) in Thismeansyou, the jewel of Charlottesville’s metal scene at the time.

Dylla wore her own designs on stage, and at some point, Joey Jordison of Slipknot borrowed one of Dylla’s jackets to wear on stage for a Rob Zombie show. He wore it again for an awards show, and, soon after, Dylla’s phone started to ring: Had she made that cool jacket Jordison wore, and would she make another?

She made another, and another, and another, and soon enough, when she wasn’t at

work or singing with Thismeansyou, she was 21 scouring local vintage and thrift stores for leather and denim garments to repurpose into jackets and vests for fellow metalheads.

Using recycled and reclaimed fabrics not only suits the hard rock world’s torn-andworn aesthetic; it helps Dylla keep costs down for her customers who, despite relative fame, don’t have a lot of cash to drop on a stage wardrobe (Dylla, who’s been a touring musician herself, knows this firsthand).

In 2012, she officially founded Kylla Custom Rock Wear, and while she liked her job in the digital cultural heritage field, she loves metal. And she wondered: How many $350 jackets would she have to make a week to equal her salary plus health insurance? “The answer was like, three,” she says.

So she quit her job at UVA and got to work on her two-month order backlog, sketching, cutting and stitching in the workspace she’d set up at home, or on the road as she toured with her other bands, including Kung Fu Dykes and Richmond-based shock rockers GWAR (Dylla embodied the Vulvatron character, singing and spraying the audience with fake blood spewed from prosthetic breasts, from fall 2014 to spring 2015).

Dylla can, and will, sew just about anywhere (sewing machines are more portable than you’d think, she says). She’ll take her clients’ measurements on tour buses and backstage, or make ringside alterations.

She’ll stack road cases into makeshift sewing tables, or balance her machine on whatever flat-ish surface is available. Dylla frequently travels all over the mid-Atlantic to meet clients at their gigs, and she goes to Europe most summers to catch a string of metal festivals, or even play a show here and there.

In the rare moments when Dylla’s not working, she sings in Fulton Ave., a Charlottesville-based serial killer-themed death metal band, alongside drummer Jordan Marchni, bassist and producer J.J. Williams and guitarists Drew Curtis and Justin Melton. Named for a street in Poughkeepsie, New York, where in the 1990s a man murdered a number of women, most of them prostitutes, Fulton Ave.’s beyond-obscene songs with titles like “Break Your Fuckin’ Face” are loud, fast and melodic and sound like a razor-wheeled bullet train barreling down the tracks...there’s something exhilarating about the possible danger of it. “This is your last chance to start a mosh pit,” Dylla told the crowd before Fulton Ave. closed out a recent gig at The Ante Room. One mohawked fan did exactly that, and Dylla couldn’t help but smile when three or four others joined in the thrash.

Dylla also sings in black metal band A Winter Lost and has played keyboards and sung on tour with electro-industrial band Velvet Acid Christ. She contributed guest vocals to Children of Bodom’s most recent album, I Worship Chaos, and finds a bit of time to travel. “Sleep is secondary,” Dylla says.

“I don’t have children. I don’t have pets, and I don’t sleep [much]...except for Sundays.”

This past summer, Dylla set up her machine backstage at a metal festival in Slovenia, where she had a view of some epic central European mountains while sewing rock ‘n’ roll clothes. As she worked, she says couldn’t help but think, “this job is cool,” and in recalling that moment, a look of equal parts satisfaction, delight and gratitude spreads across her face.

Expanding her wardrobe

In June, Dylla moved the Kylla Custom Rock Wear operation to its current location on the second floor of the Starr Hill building at 801 W. Main St. Dylla went to a bunch of shows in this very space, back when it was the Starr Hill Music Hall (the venue closed in 2007), and she thinks often of how “it’s really neat” to make clothes for world-class rock stars in a place that’s so tied to the Charlottesville music scene. The only more appropriate spot in town would be if Trax (the nightclub that hosted some of the Dave Matthews Band’s earliest shows, and a spot played by Juliana Hatfield, Sonic Youth and They Might Be Giants, among others) was still standing.

The two-room studio is filled with multiple clothing racks hung with leather and denim jackets and jeans, plus a rainbow of spandex fabrics that puddle on tables and a black and white paisley ironing board. One room is lined with nearly a dozen sewing machines on tables—old black metal Singers, a white Pfaff machine, a serger and a Sailrite machine that’s intended to sew can-

Aside from a few ready-to-wear items like printed t-shirts, all Kylla Custom Rock Wear pieces are made-to-order. Dylla consults with clients on what they’re looking for, then typically prepares up a design sketch before getting to work. She makes everything from leather jackets to jeans to corsets, and nowadays, about half of Kylla Custom Rock Wear orders come from professional wrestlers looking for durable, eye-catching ring wear. Some of her designs have even been immortalized in plastic, worn by wrestlers’ action figures.

Stitch fix Making stage and performance clothes is radically different from making street

“It’s always been hard for me to put into words what is in my head when I listen to music, but with this job, I get a chance to put it into cloth.” KIM DYLLA clothes, Dylla says. Most of us aren’t jumping and bouncing off wrestling ring ropes on a regular basis, and she considers activity as much as aesthetic when creating a piece.

Dylla always consults with clients before designing, asking them what they’re looking for. She’ll ask them for examples of what they like and don’t like, what fabrics, colors and embellishments they want, and together they’ll agree on a design that suits their on-stage persona.

For her wrestling clients, she thinks about what a piece will look like when the wrestler makes his or her entrance into the ring, and then how it will both look and function during a match. The fabric and the design of a garment must be flexible and non-restrictive; embellishments like spikes and raised studs can be dangerous for physical matches, so Dylla tends to avoid them when designing for wrestlers.

Joseph Rudd, known to most as WWE SmackDown wrestler Erick Rowan, says Dylla helps him bring his “crazy ideas to fabric.” Dylla has made a few items for his

character, including a pair of patched pants and a brownish-green military-meets-sanatorium vest. (For the record, Rudd is 6 feet, 8 inches and about 315 pounds.) Rudd says Dylla’s costumes are “durable and [hold] up to the most insane of matches.”

She’s designed things like a latex apron covered in faces for WWE Raw star Bray Wyatt (yes, it’s as creepy-looking as it sounds), and plenty of entrance and ring outfits for Tamina Snuka, a WWE SmackDown “diva.”

One of the biggest challenges Dylla faces when designing for wrestlers is the amount of, or rather the lack of, actual design space on wrestling singlets and trunks (or “manties,” as Dylla calls them). “You’re not really working with much fabric there,” Dylla quips, raising an eyebrow.

Musicians perform under hot, bright lights, so their clothing must be as lightweight as possible. Leather and metal aren’t featherweight materials, which is why Dylla avoids adding pockets and linings to rock wear that has to also be sturdy enough to withstand (fake) blood, sweat and whatever else gets flung around at a metal show. All Kylla Custom Rock Wear garments are triple-stitched to prevent seam blowouts—high-kicking drummers and amp-leaping guitarists tend to split the crotches of their jeans, Dylla says.

When designing for musicians, Dylla also translates what she hears in the music into the clothing.

Dylla says that when she first started making rock wear, she worked almost exclusively in black, brown and Army green fabrics, using a straight-sew machine and black thread.

Now that about 50 percent of her work is for wrestlers (and the occasional French metal band that requests neon leopard print pants) she’s working with a rainbow of spandex fabrics and threads.

“It sort of offends my goth sensibilities,” Dylla jokes as she sews a white and gold kneepad cover for Hobbs’ wrestling costume, looking over her shoulder and nodding toward hot pink, black and turquoise ribbon-cut spandex. After making a glittery green cape with feathers for a wrestler, she found glitter and wispy feather vanes all over the studio for months afterward. She gets it, though—she herself was a wrestler with Richmond’s Lucha Libre for a while.

But Dylla’s still a metalhead through and through. One night, she might host three touring metal bands at her house (the global metal scene is relatively close-knit and hospitable) and cook them breakfast in the morning before heading to work, where she’ll sew until it’s time to see Swedish guitar virtuoso Yngwie Malmsteen melt faces at The Jefferson Theater, or time to play a set with Fulton Ave.

Near the door, grommet and snap presses sit atop a small desk, its top drawer full of various sizes and hues of metal grommets and snaps. There are small crates and big plastic tackle boxes full of embellishments such as studs, spikes, snaps, chains, chain mail, patches and spools of various fabric trim; black cloth bins on a metal shelving unit hold fabric dye, Simplicity dress patterns, netting, thrifted woven belts and other supplies. In one window, there’s a red-spiked succulent plant sandwiched between a brushed metal K and a gargoyle clock. Among the decorations hanging on the walls are pictures of some Kylla Custom Rock Wear clients, like Robb Flynn of Machine Head, WWE action figures wearing Kylla designs, an Iron Maiden flag and a Kylla Custom Rock Wear banner that bears the company’s motto: Rock your wardrobe. Rock your life.

Pairs of shears and a small army of pincushions—the classic red tomato ones, plus a roly-poly black bat one—stuck with yellowheaded pins rest on just about every surface.

Measuring tapes of various colors hang from the clothing racks and snake around clothing sketches on the sewing table. A few different dress forms, plus a pair of beige-colored plastic legs that Dylla has dubbed Larry “The Legs” Malone, stand at the threshold between the two rooms.

KNOW YOUR METAL As is the case with all genres of music, heavy metal (or just “metal”) has plenty of subgenres. If you’re not familiar, here’s a crash course to give you a better handle on the Kylla Custom Rock Wear world.

Metal/heavy metal: Rooted in psychedelic acid rock and blues-rock and employing heavily distorted sounds, the genre was developed in the United Kingdom in the 1960s and ’70s (think Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple).

Thrash metal: A faster, more aggressive subgenre of metal (Megadeth, Anthrax, Slayer).

Death metal: Characterized by lowtuned, distorted guitars, abrupt tempo and key changes, plus growling vocals and often Lovecraftian, horror film-esque lyrics about the occult, religion, death and murder, among other things (Venom, Obituary, Kreator).

Black metal: Perhaps the most underground and least accessible of the metal subgenres, it’s an even darker descendant of death metal (Mercyful Fate, Mayhem).

Speed metal: Technically fast, aggressive metal that requires virtuosic skill.

From fall 2014 to spring 2015, Dylla embodied the character Vulvatron and provided vocals for GWAR, a heavy-metal band with its own mythology and a cult following.

looking for, so he sent Dylla some examples and let her run with it.

“Besides having an impressive portfolio of past work, Kim is a metalhead through [and through], and I knew her sense of aesthetics was perfect for what I needed,” Gronholt says. When wearing his custom pieces, he says he feels “like a character, a larger-thanlife rock star and all-around badass.”

When Gronholt showed up for a Novarium set wearing his Kylla Custom Rock Wear outfit, his bandmate and fellow guitarist Dean Michaels had to have one, too.

Michaels ordered a custom jacket and pants, and based his request on other items Dylla had already made, with a twist: She incorporated a Celtic design into the pants to represent Michaels’ Irish heritage. Dylla’s “reputation in the industry, her customer service and her handmade, one-of-a-kind pieces with such attention to detail make her the perfect designer of the kind of look I was going for,” Michaels says.

There are a few other folks in the industry who do what Dylla does. Michaels says he’s spoken to them, but “none of the pieces come close to the level of detail that Kylla Custom Rock Wear does. Other companies churn out multiples of the same pieces.

Someone else walks around wearing the same outfit as you somewhere. Kim’s pieces are one of a kind. Kim [even] refuses to make something for someone that she’s already made,” Michaels says.

It’s about 4pm when Dylla and Awesome finish up wrestler Hobbs’ custom order, and Dylla takes the entire getup—trunks, hooded vest and kneepad covers—into the cutting/ patterning/photographing/mailing room and pulls the vest over a chest form and clips the trunks and kneepad covers onto hangers for a quick photo. Next, she folds the individual garments and stuffs them into two USPS Priority Mail Express packets along with a thank you note and custom care instructions for how to wash everything in a hotel bathtub or truck stop sink. Dylla tapes the two packets together and weighs the whole thing on a mail scale—2.7 pounds—before filling out the online shipping forms and printing a label to affix to the front of the taped-up packet.

At 4:25, Dylla rushes down the stairs and out to the parking lot, Hobbs’ parcel in hand, and hops into her little black Pontiac with a KYLLA license plate. She knows that if she doesn’t leave by 4:30, she won’t make it to the post office in time. Dylla says that most days, the post office employees are standing at the desk looking at their watches, waiting for her to run in at the last minute with a package to ship to some random place in Sweden, Norway, Japan or Australia.

After the post office run, Dylla will return to her studio and work late into the night, sipping cans of Wegmans blackberry tangerine-flavored seltzer water as she works.

Even with Awesome sewing in the studio three or four days a week, Dylla still works about 12 hours a day, six days a week. She tries to sew for eight hours a day, which can be tricky when she’s handling all the other aspects of the business—money, books and shipping, design consults, patterning, buying and dyeing and treating materials. If you pass the Starr Hill building at 2 or 3 o’clock in the morning and see a light on on the second floor, chances are it’s Dylla, working away amid the whir of the machines and heavy metal screams streaming from the bluetooth speaker.

around the record player and just sitting with the music, as albums “provided the best company,” she says.

Abigail is a concept album about a young 19th-century couple whose lives are turned upside down by Abigail, the evil spirit of a baby stillborn decades earlier. “The lyrics are like some sort of Lovecraftian epic, full of evil and mystery, but with an old prose to them,” says Dylla. The music is soaring and epic, but still headbangable, and the overall story is satanic and otherworldly but full of the complexities of human existence. This is what she put into the band’s wardrobe, outfits that she says were classic metal looks, “like they crept out of a grave they had been buried in since the album had been released, but surfacing with an edge that speaks to all generations of metal fans.”

Andy LaRocque, guitarist, songwriter and occasional synthesizer player for King Diamond, says it was a “pleasure” to work with Dylla on the costumes. “She totally understood our needs, and her eye for details just made it perfect; she even came out to our rehearsals [in Texas] to fix the last details,” he says, adding that they plan to consult with her again on future tours.

Dylla says she doesn’t get starstruck anymore, but she “can’t deny it’s really cool when you stand on [the side of a] stage in front of thousands of people and watch a band that you’ve loved for years and watch them play in your clothes.”

“It’s always been hard for me to put into words what is in my head when I listen to music, but with this job, I get a chance to put it into cloth,” Dylla says.

Dylla’s reputation as a thoughtful, creative and reliable performance clothing designer has spread mostly organically from musician to musician, but occasionally thanks to the internet. Sean Gronholt, guitarist for Northern Virginia-based goth metal band Novarium, ordered a pair of pants and a jacket from Dylla after finding Kylla Custom Rock Wear at the top of Google search results for “rock wear” and “stage clothing.”

“My painting teacher [at UVA] taught me to never use black out of the tube—you always have to mix your own black,” says Dylla. “So I feel like to dye things and paint things black so that there’s a bit of purple, a bit of brown, a bit of blue in it...it’s [more] interesting. You can make black a spectrum,” she says, adding after a pause: “That’s metal.”

A couple of years ago, she designed the stage wardrobe for Danish heavy metal outfit King Diamond’s 2015 Abigail tour, where the band played its celebrated 1987 concept album, Abigail, in its entirety.

“My music is heavily motivated by things I’m afraid of,” says Green. Things like Nazis, the government, disease, dying alone, being put in the proverbial box, leading an unaccomplished life, being an asshole and making mediocre music, among other things.

Most dogfuck songs say something similar, but in different ways, Green says, and what they say is that, “you suck; that’s okay.

good lyrics are hard to write, and Green is seemingly never satisfied by what they’ve produced. “I’m not trying to be an asshole, but I’m a fairly intelligent dude,” he says.

“I’m aware that I have talent for this shit. I just feel like I should have been applying myself for years up until this point. I make decent music; I could be making really good shit. It gets frustrating, witnessing the gap.”

What does come easily to Green is beatmaking. So far this year, Green’s released six different instrumental-only beat tapes on dogfuck’s SoundCloud page (soundcloud. com/dogfuq), including a 26-track concept beat tape, The Entire Fucking Alphabet, where Green created a beat for each letter of the English alphabet. Green incorporates as much socially conscious material into music as possible, in part because it’s what Green thinks about often, and in part because “as a white person in hip-hop, I have to pay rent on my space,” says Green.

that represents a specific speech sound; letters are building blocks for words, for languages. But Green imagined a deeper, more complex sonic landscape for each letter—if A were a song instead of just a single sound, what would it sound like? What about B, C or X? It’s an assertion of “that’s what it sounds like now, [because] I made it that way,” Green says of the tracks, named “Number A,” “Number B” and so on, conflating letters and numbers when normally, they’d be separated into two different spheres.

“I don’t know how much I believe this, but, [maybe] people are only free when things are going ‘wrong,’” says Green through a cloud of smoke. “Seeing this hookah on the table, I probably wouldn’t register it as anything in particular,” because it “belongs” on a table in the Twisted Branch Tea Bazaar, says Green, but see a hookah in a cemetery and you’d wonder what the heck it was doing there. “Those rule-breaking moments, that discloses the world,” says Green.

itting on a cushioned bench in the back room of the Twisted Branch Tea Bazaar, Phil Green takes a drag from a hookah hose and exhales a stream of hazy smoke that hangs in the fading afternoon sunlight before recalling an early memory.

In that memory, Green’s about 6 years old, riding around in their mom’s car (Green identifies as genderqueer), and a Beastie Boys’ Licensed to Ill cassette belonging to Green’s older brother is playing on the stereo. “Most illingest b-boy, well, I got that feeling / I am most ill and I’m rhymin’ and stealin’. / Ali Baba and the 40 thieves / Ali Baba and the 40 thieves,” goes the first track, “Rhymin’ & Stealin’.”

The increasing volume and attitude of the repeated line “Ali Baba and the 40 thieves” snagged Green’s attention, and in that moment, Green understood the power of music. “It was getting me hype, even when I was little,” Green says, chewing on a white-painted fingernail between puffs of hookah.

Green, 27, who makes electronic-, metaland punk-influenced hip-hop under the moniker dogfuck, has since realized that music is the only thing that has consistently made sense. Don’t ask Green to explain exactly how or why music makes sense; it just does. “Trying to describe a song is one of the dumbest things a person can do. Music is good because music is good,” says Green with a blend of sincerity and sass; music is something that speaks directly to the intangible within us while facilitating an understanding of that which is outside of us.

Music can move people to do just about anything, Green says. “You can sing someone to sleep; you can try to comfort yourself. Also, potentially, it can start revolutions and shit.

Music well-applied can do all of these things.”

For the sake of those who might want to catch Green’s Rugged Arts set at the Twisted Branch Tea Bazaar on Thursday night, this

Green says that a lyric off of “Delusion,” a track on Triangle, a forthcoming dogfuck album, sums up dogfuck’s musical intention pretty well: “Whatever picture depicted is aggregate / When I stand up, all you ever see is you starin’ back and shit. / My love is vast as that chasm is / Art is the act of collapsing it / But life is expectation management.”

Green began writing lyrics somewhat accidentally; rhyming is a musical act that requires no equipment whatsoever. But

riter and performer Ann Randolph has lived an amazing life. In college, rather than paying to live in a dorm, she lived in the schizophrenic unit of a state mental hospital in exchange for writing plays with patients. She worked the graveyard shift at a homeless shelter for minimum wage for 10 years. And she once lived on a boat in Alaska for a year with 14 men from Louisiana with whom, at first, she appeared to have nothing in common.

A writer from a young age, Randolph joined The Groundlings, an improv and sketch comedy theater in Los Angeles, after college. “I was very interested in creating outrageous characters,” she says, but her personal style evolved into “combining comedy and the human condition.” Drawing from her own life, she began writing and performing solo shows. “Whatever I’m struggling with I create a show around it,” she says, adding, “I find writing is very healing, very powerful.”

She wrote Squeeze Box about her time working at the homeless shelter and performed it in “a crappy theater” she rented in L.A. “That’s when Mel Brooks kind of discovered me,” she says. “He and his wife [Anne Bancroft] showed up.” One of the characters Randolph played was a prostitute addicted to crack, a character inspired by someone she met at the homeless shelter. “Anne Bancroft loved that character,” she says. “She wanted to make [the show] into a movie and play her on Broadway.”

Brooks and Bancroft whisked Randolph away to New York City where they produced Squeeze Box off Broadway in 2004.

“It was a big shift for me,” says Randolph, who went on to tour with the show.

Bancroft passed away in 2005 before they were able to adapt Squeeze Box into a film. Then Randolph’s own father and

mother died. “So,” Randolph says matter-of-factly, “the next show was a comedy about death.” Titled Loveland, she performed it at Arena Stage in Washington, D.C., in 2014. A theater critic for the Washington Post called it “inappropriate in all the right ways,” which struck Randolph as the perfect title for her next show.

“I’ve been told I’ve been inappropriate my whole life so I just love that title,” she says. “I believe that there’s room for appropriateness and inappropriateness, and it can be done in an illuminating and hilarious way.” Most important to her is what is true. “If we can’t speak our truth we can’t be authentic in our lives,” she says.

Virginia Organizing has invited Randolph to perform Inappropriate in All the Right Ways as the headliner for its Night of Comedy and Storytelling for Racial and Social Justice, an event that will include Susan Bro (mother of Heather Heyer), former 5th District Representative Tom Perriello and local hip-hop group Sons of Ichibei.

Randolph’s show is a “story about resiliency” that chronicles her life “as a creator,” she says. At one point in the production, she invites willing audience members to share their stories. “How incredibly cathartic it can be to speak something you’ve been holding on to for a long time,” Randolph says.

The show also raises the question “Can we see ourselves in another?” and illustrates the camaraderie Randolph found in people different from herself. “You may start out thinking you’re different,” she says, “and in the end you’ll see where you’re united rather than divided. It comes from listening to people’s stories and dropping judgment and preconceived ideas.”

What’s one thing she believes helps people listen? Humor. “Sometimes when we hear someone’s strong point of view in a preaching voice we tune out. But if there’s humor there we’re more receptive and open,” she says.

artin McDonagh’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri isn’t the only story about the blurred lines between doing the right thing and making a bad situation worse, but it’s the only one that matters. McDonagh has made a career of pitch-black satires that find the humor and humanity in characters who are experiencing genuine torment—the regret and shame of In Bruges, the addiction and mourning of Seven Psychopaths—and making Three Billboards is the next logical step thematically and stylistically. Featuring his finest writing to date, and brought to life by one of the best ensemble casts assembled this year, Three Billboards belongs on every cinephile’s awards season must-watch list.

The story follows Mildred Hayes (Frances McDormand), a mother in the titular town who lost her daughter in a horrific crime less than a year ago. Mildred buys three long-forgotten billboards to remind the world and demand action. They read, in sequence, “Raped while dying,” “And still no arrests,” “How come, Chief Willoughby?”

The effects of the billboards are immediately felt in Ebbing—some desired, some less so, but as Mildred notes, there is more activity on the case now than when the crime

occurred. Some question directly naming Willoughby, a pillar of the community and a trusted law enforcement official. Willoughby himself, played by Woody Harrelson, is initially troubled by this—it is a case with no leads and no actionable evidence— but he does believe Mildred has a right to justice and respects her personally a great deal. Officer Jason Dixon (Sam Worthington), however, doesn’t take kindly to Mildred’s gesture, which is fine, as most people don’t take too kindly to Dixon, an oaf still living under the roof and influence of his racist mother.

Like any satire that deals in heavy subject matter, nothing that the characters endure is the object of mockery or punchlines. McDonagh aims his wit directly at the manner in which people behave—good and bad— when pushed to their extremes. As we get to know Mildred, we learn exactly how the confrontational nature of the billboards is entirely in line with her character. She is a force of nature unto herself and always has been, and McDormand’s depiction shows her loving and loyal side without using it to dull the character’s edge, as might have happened in lesser films. When she curses out friends and foes alike, it is pure poetry in both McDonagh’s writing and McDormand’s delivery, and would have been worth the price of the ticket alone had the rest of

the film not been as intelligent. This is the role of a lifetime in an already underrated career for McDormand, and any nomination slate this awards season that does not feature her name can be summarily ignored.

The presence of Harrelson and Rockwell is a terrific example of casting both into and against type. Willoughby is a frank yet caring officer, perfectly suited to Harrelson’s

soothing cadence and graceful ability to find humor in tragedy and vice versa. Rockwell is a master as the clown who attempts to appear in control, so his selection for Dixon may seem like a no-brainer, but his character undergoes a fascinating yet unexpected transition that will make anyone who’s tracked his filmography take notice.

For any other aspect not mentioned—editing, cinematography, sound, supporting cast—consider the omission in this review as an endorsement of its quality. Front to back, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri is one of the year’s best films.

Feels like home The Villa diner will move to a new space next year

Open since October at 1015 Heathercroft Circle in Crozet, Wayland’s Crossing Tavern occupies the spot that most recently housed Public Fish & Oyster West, where Sewell served as chef and worked through more than perfecting a fish and chips recipe: In July 2016, Sewell was diagnosed with Hodgkin Lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphatic system (part of the immune system). Rather than stay home, Sewell came to work every day and cooked during his chemotherapy treatments.

It’s not surprising that he found solace in the kitchen. Food “has always been something I was interested in,” says Sewell, who has worked in kitchens since he was 16, and learned to cook on the job. “I like being in the environment, having to be on your feet, talking with other people.”

The treatment “didn’t affect me as much as I think it should have,” says Sewell, but

still, it wasn’t easy. “Chemo sucks,” he says.

But cooking at Public West allowed him to put time and energy into thinking about something other than cancer, and he says it “was a great diversion.”

Wayland’s came about when Public owner Daniel Kaufman wanted to close Public West to focus on the restaurant’s other location at 513 W. Main St. in Charlottesville.

Sewell and his business partner, Kim Dillon, were ready to step in.

There’s something special about sharing food with others, Sewell says, adding that it’s an easy thing to accomplish at this family-friendly pub, with its varied menu of seafood and meat dishes, plus a few vegetarian options and a kids’ menu.

And for Sewell, Wayland’s Crossing is “ a place to play” with food, to develop new dishes and see where things go. “I love when I can create something that I really enjoy myself that you can’t get anywhere else,” he says.

Always time for wine Abe Schoener is widely regarded as one of the most original California winemakers alive. Dubbed “the wine world’s enigmatic cult hero” by website Food Republic, and a “fearless, risk-loving winemaker” by the New York Times, Schoener will be in Charlottesville on Tuesday, December 12, for a wine dinner in the subterranean rooms of Brasserie Saison on the Downtown Mall. Joining Schoener will be Claude Thibaut of Charlottesville’s Thibaut-Janisson Winery, and the folks from Washington, D.C.-based distilleries Green Hat Gin and Don Ciccio & Figli. Additionally, Brasserie Saison manager Will Curley says that Champion Brewing Company will debut a rare, previously unreleased wild-fermented boysenberry brown ale at the event. ast week, The Villa diner announced that after 12 years of serving classic fare such as eggs, sandwiches, pizza and more, the Emmet Street restaurant will move to a new location in Charlottesville next year.

The reason? The Villa sits on land owned by the University of Virginia, and both the diner and the Cavalier Inn will be demolished when the university begins to redevelop the parcel of land at the corner of Emmet Street and Ivy Road next summer (The Villa will remain open in its current spot until May).

Before owners Jennifer and Ken Beachley bought the diner in 2005, the building was home to the Expresso Italian Villa, a restaurant built after the previous building on the land, a biker bar called The Kettle, burned down.

The Beachleys attribute The Villa’s success to a few different things, including its employees, some of whom have been in the space longer than the Beachleys. “We couldn’t do it without them,” says Ken. And then there’s The Villa’s loyal local clientele. “People say it’s like Cheers,” says Jennifer. “There are often times that I’ll look around the restaurant and recognize everyone in here.”

No word yet on where The Villa will move, but the Beachleys have promised to keep us in the loop, and we’ll fill you in when we know more.
