Begin the search for other wedding vendors (transportation, flowers, invitations, music, makeup artist), starting with photographers and videographers.

Once you’ve chosen your wedding photographer, schedule an engagement photo session. ✓ Start shopping for wedding rings.

lanning a wedding means thinking about how best to represent the two of you as a couple, down to the very last cup. But how do you set your wedding apart when you’re pulling from the same resources as everyone else? That was a question local industry vets Mallory Joyce, a wedding planner and florist, and photographer Elisa Bricker had, too, so they set about solving the problem.

“I had been helping clients design their tablescapes for their weddings and was discouraged by the lack of new and unique pieces available to them locally,” Joyce says. “Elisa had been thinking of opening a boutique of housewares.” They combined their efforts and, with

some inspiration from West Coast event designers, launched Emerson James, a rental company that specializes in fresh tabletop wares.

The resulting collection is a highly curated trove of chargers, china, flatware, glassware and accessories in the owners’ signature style, which they call “fresh, timeless, unexpected and inviting.” And, like a closet of outfits, the selection is designed to mix and match, so that a marble dinner plate might look just as at home atop an organic-edge wooden charger as it would on wicker.

“There are already wonderful companies renting linens, furniture and large-scale kitchen and barware,” says Joyce. “We see EJR providing beautiful pieces to elevate your event and complete your design.”

hat’s that you say? You actually don’t want the big ol’ wedding involving three days of catered meals, bagpipers on parade, engraved nameplates to mark which boutonniere goes on which groomsman?

You’re not alone.

Plenty of folks opt for a smaller, simpler wedding. There are many reasons why—and cost is only the most obvious. Fewer details mean less

The low-key ceremony

Everybody knows you can get married at City Hall—and in Charlottesville, that costs $50 (plus $30 for the marriage license). Not everybody realizes, though, that the city’s officiant can also travel to nearby Justice Park or even an entirely different location. Captain William Marshall, who officiates weddings for the Sheriff’s Office, says that if you give him a heads-up a week or two in advance, he’ll venture to the spot of your choice and will charge only a small travel fee based on mileage.

That includes evenings and weekends—and the ceremony might be more personal than you’d

imagine. Marshall says he loves marrying couples. “It is their moment, and I want to be a part of it,” he says.

Whoever your officiant, having fewer guests makes you more nimble when choosing a ceremony site. Get creat ive: An overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway? A moving trolley? One of UVA’s Pavilion gardens?

The small reception

A smaller crowd means you can keep your reception costs down, too. Even a shelter at a city or county park, though it’s not glamorous, can be perfectly pleasant and very affordable ($50-80 for a city shelter, $60 for one at an Albemarle County park). Just be sure to reserve in advance so you don’t have to fight the softball team for your spot.

Lundgren says lots of couples assume that if they hold their wedding at home, they’ll save money—but it isn’t always so. “It can be just as expensive” as renting a venue, she says, “if you have to put up tents, tables, chairs, generators.”

One way to simplify is to choose the type of venue that provides food and drink, so you’re not making a second choice about a caterer. For

a dinner of fewer than 50 people, Lundgren says C&O Restaurant is a popular choice. “They have great value,” she says—and the place is, of course, a pillar of the local food scene. Two different event spaces can seat up to 30 or 40 guests, respectively. Each costs $250 to rent, and prix-fixe menus usually cost around $80-90 per person, including alcohol, tax and gratuity.

The Space is a newer Downtown venue where longtime local restaurateurs Tim Burgess and Vincent Derquenne create custom menus for private parties. While The Space can seat up to 150, Burgess says they’ve hosted groups well below 50, and charge roughly $100 per guest, all-inclusive, for a dinner reception. “The shape of The Space allows for us to keep intimacy for these smaller groups,” he says. Make planning simple: Keep your decorating to a minimum, and let the exposed brick walls and artful food speak for themselves.

The slightly bigger reception

Inviting more than 50 people? Blue Mountain Brewery, in Afton, can seat up to 64 in its private event space. Meals start at $20 per person (tax, tip and beverages are separate), and there’s a venue fee that ranges from $200 to $2,500 depending on when you’re celebrating. Note that the brewery isn’t available on Saturdays.

Lundgren likes the atmosphere at Michie Tavern, where period-costumed servers help set the mood for 50 to 100 dinner guests. “What a memorable experience that is,” she says. The cost of a Michie meal starts at $27 per person (not including tax, tip or alcohol), and there is no venue fee.

If your budget is bigger, but you want to streamline the planning, here’s a final suggestion: Old Metropolitan Hall ranges in cost from $1,950 to $3,950. You have options for catering, but can simplify by using the in-house caterer, Brasserie Saison.

OMH’s Sarah Beasley says that the space works well for ceremonies, too—perhaps even with guests seated right at their dinner tables—and needs little to no enhancement if you’re not inclined to decorate. “It’s pretty beautiful as it is,” she says. Now that sounds easy.

ile this one under “No-longer-cheesy wedding details”: dove releases. We know the thought might conjure images from ’80s rom-coms, but take it from this bride, who hired Cville Love Birds to enhance her long-awaited “I do.”

“The doves were released just as we kissed and were announced as husband and wife for the first time,” says Meryem Atkins. “I still remember our guests letting out ‘ooohhh’ and ‘woahh’ as the birds flew out from behind us.”

Cole Fairchild, 16, and his 14-year-old brother, Jude, got the birds about four years ago as “an intriguing hobby,” but quickly realized the hobby could be turned into a business. In 2016, they

launched Cville Love Birds, which offers two, four or eight doves released upon request on your big day. The brothers raise and train the birds—a purebred breed of homing pigeon (“Ours come from the line of Disney doves used in Orlando,” says Cole) that, after release, will return to the loft where they were born, sometimes from as far as 100 miles away—themselves, and handle all the logistics.

“Our first question of course was: How does this work?” says Atkins. “I was thoroughly impressed by the knowledge the boys had about doves, their migratory patterns, typical release protocol and the overall care they had taken of the birds.”

Atkins and her husband, Cameron, were married in October of 2016 at Blenheim Vineyards.

Says the bride, “The dove release was one of the highlights of our wedding day!”

Wedding bands deserve some attention as you do your planning—and don’t leave this decision to the last minute, since rings can take one to four weeks to arrive once you’ve placed an order.

So what options are out there for weddingband shoppers?

The classic metal band is still certainly around—but whereas your grandparents might have chosen gold without a second thought, you’ll likely be weighing the pros and cons of gold,

Rob Matthews, manager at Fink’s Jewelers, says his female customers frequently ask for wedding bands that can equally well complement an engagement ring or be worn without it. “When they are doing an activity or going on a trip, they may not want to wear their engagement ring,” he says, “but still want a nice-looking ring on their finger.” Cus-

tom bands can be made to contour perfectly with your engagement ring.

As for the men, Matthews says lots of groomsto-be these days are interested in alternative metals like tungsten and titanium—materials that are more durable and less expensive than traditional gold.

Don’t forget to look for an easy fit, too—some rings are actually labeled “comfort fit”—and something that works with your lifestyle (i.e. don’t go for something fussy if you spend weekends climbing mountains). This might be the one fashion choice you’ll live with forever.

Metals and more metals

Gold is here to stay, but it’s been joined by a number of other metals that you may be getting to know as you hunt for the perfect bands. Here are the basics: Gold, as we all know, is relatively soft; it can be combined with other metals to create “white gold,” which is essentially a plating that can be scratched off. Platinum has become very popular in recent years and, true to its luxury status, is the most expensive material for wedding bands—yet it’s not especially scratch-resistant. It’s also fairly heavy.

Three alternatives that are more affordable are palladium, tungsten and titanium.

Palladium looks similar to platinum, and it feels lighter on the finger. One con: Many jewelers have less experience with it, and it can be hard to repair.

Tungsten is the most scratch-resistant metal, and its hardness means it’ll break rather than bend under enough pressure. Titanium is similarly durable and affordable, but very lightweight.

All of these—except gold—are hypoallergenic.—EH

onging for a breath of fresh air at your wedding site? Potted plants, trees and shrubs are a trend that can delight your guests and bring an allnatural vibe to a space. There are lots of ways to use greenery at your wedding.

One of the most common: “Making a space more intimate,” says Luke Puglia with J. W. Townsend Landscapes. The company’s Hotpots service can deliver rented trees and shrubs to a site, set them up and then remove them. If, say, you have a small number of guests relative to your venue’s capacity, trees can help fill in the space and make it feel less cavernous.

You can use trees to flank a doorway or define the spot where you will take your vows, much like a chuppah.

“Another reason would be to hide something unsightly,”

says Puglia—for example, a “hedge” of potted boxwoods in front of the open space under a stage. He’s also helped couples planning ceremonies in open fields, using trees to frame the group of seats. Shorter shrubs or flowering perennials might line the ceremony aisle.

What kinds of trees work best? Most of the year, Puglia says, “Everyone’s using deciduous trees: maples and birches.” Wintertime sees couples opting for evergreens like magnolia or arborvitae. Hotpots rents plants ranging from 6-foot perennials through 10-foot trees.

Call for guidance and a cost estimate; prices can range from several hundred dollars into the thousands, depending on how many trees you need.

Smaller plants that you purchase at a garden center can play a role too—picture hydran geas as table centerpieces, or tiny succulents that double as place cards and favors. Have fun getting creative with the containers.

Bluff your way to buff How to fast-track your #fitnessgoals before your big day

very bride and groom wants to look their best on their wedding day. But many engaged couples don’t have months to formulate a long-range diet and exercise plan (or, whoops, forgot). If you’re short on time—as in, your wedding is in a matter of weeks—but want to put your best bod forward, don’t panic: There are still some totally doable steps you can take.

Read on for tips from some of Charlottesville’s top fitness experts for last-minute ways to slim down, tone up and look smokin’ hot by the time you’re standing at the altar.

Magen Caplinger, director of personal training at ACAC’s downtown location, says that “diet is 80 percent of the challenge.” She encourages brides and grooms to “consume lots of highquality food like fruits, veggies and proteins and limit sugar intake.”

Dar Malecki, owner of MADabolic Charlottesville, agrees. “If someone has a few weeks and just wants to drop a few pounds…I would recommend a change in their nutrition immediately.” For a noticeable change within four weeks, Malecki advises folks “to ‘clean’ up their eating habits. To me, that would be to cut out all processed foods, sugars, dairy, alcohol and grains.”

Sweat. Regularly.

Focused exercise is a part of every expert’s advice.

As Malecki says, “Couple your clean eating with workouts, and the results will happen in those few short weeks.”

Deborah Barry, an instructor at Hot Yoga Charlottesville, advises brides and grooms to hit the yoga mat “for a good sweat between three and five days per week.” Coupled with a twoweek whole foods detox, this plan helps “tone up and shed inflammation.”

McKinley Lee, a Pure Barre teacher, recommends the studio’s Classic barre class, which uses your body’s resistance to strengthen, tone and increase endurance and balance, as a “fun, efficient and effective way to feel confident both

physically and mentally before your big day.”

Lee reports visible changes within eight to 10 classes, and encourages clients “to take class at least three to four times per week to really maximize results.”

Lee praises Pure Barre’s technique, which uses small, isometric muscle contractions to target specific muscle groups—arms, thighs, seat and abs— as a great way to fast-track definition in those body parts most on display on your wedding day.

Hydrate.

Don’t stress.

Barry recommends drinking lemon water “all day long,” and Caplinger suggests intaking at least half your body weight in ounces. Drinking lots of water not only helps you differentiate between hunger and thirst, but being properly hydrated also helps your skin look nice. Says OrangeTheory instructor Emily MacDonnell, “Hello, wedding-day glow!”

Vary your workout.

When it comes to both diet and exercise, quality is more important than quantity. In other words, you don’t need hours of activity, just focused work. Caplinger recommends combining cardio and strength exercises in a circuit-style workout with bouts of high intensity.

Experts also recommend keeping stress levels as low as possible, which includes remembering the importance of good nutrition when feeling overwhelmed. “Eat the right foods, but eat!” says MacDonnell. “It’s tempting to want to skip meals when the big day is getting closer… But not eating will actually slow your metabolism and cause cravings for high-fat and high-carb foods.”

So there you have it: With some clean eating, a few focused workouts per week and lots of water, your altar-ready fitness goals can still be achieved. Jennings says that couples sometimes begin lessons two weeks before their wedding and expect to learn a choreographed dance. Mehring has instructed couples with even less time. But this isn’t ideal.

“I had people come in a day before their wedding,” Mehring says. “I had them box step in a pattern. It was doable, but not great.”

Mehring and Jennings recommend that couples budget for at least 10 private lessons, and allow more than a month to plan, learn and practice their first dance.

Learn to lead, or be led “I saw you try to lead a few times,” Jennings tells me, and quickly proceeds to rumba, foxtrot and twirl me around the room, in an effort to show my fiancé how I could be led without knowing the next step.

y fiancé and I met at a high school dance. I was dancing on a table with girlfriends (one of whom will be my maid of honor at our wedding this May), while he stood against a wall near the room’s front door.

You could say it was love at first sight.

As a lover of dance-offs, late night karaoke, the Macarena and viral YouTube videos of fatherdaughter dances, I have big plans for our first dance. My fiancé would rather we not do one.

Together, we visited Terry Dean’s Blue Light Ballroom for an introductory lesson with instructor Connor Jennings, and spoke with Smooth Sailing Ballroom’s owner Adam Mehring. Whether you find the prospect of planning your first dance thrilling or nerve-racking, here are a few tips to make planning and performing your first dance a ball.

For everyone in the “follower” role, even though you may have dragged your partner to dance lessons in the first place, sit back—or rather, stand tall, place your hand on your partner’s arm and smile, Jennings tells me—and let your other half lead.

Lighten up “This is dance. We don’t want to be too serious,” Jennings says, even praising us when we visibly stumbles on a foxtrot rock turn, but keeps moving despite our wrong steps.

“We teach how to dance so that it looks natural and a lot of fun,” Mehring says. He likes to learn the “vibe” of couples’ relationships before choreographing a dance for them.

“Be willing to be wrong,” Jennings advises, and my fiancé agrees.

“I was never really much of a dancer, but I had fun and learned a lot,” he says.

et’s talk about commitment. You’ve already found the person with whom you are committing to spend the rest of your life (well done, you!), but, as Candy Girl knows, there are still more choices to make as you head toward the aisle, perhaps the most fraught of which is the wedding dress.

It’s the most expensive and most-photographed piece of clothing you’ll likely ever wear, so you want to be sure you get it right. But, like, sometimes even figuring out what you want for lunch is too much. What if you mess this up? What if you think you’ve got it right, and then you’re in the dressing room at your final fitting and it turns out to be just a house salad when what you really wanted was that yummy pasta with the smoked salmon and that buttery cheese you got at that one place that time?

(Candy Gal digresses.) This won’t happen, dear reader. Because your girl is here with a voice of reason (and a few seasoned pros) to make sure you find the dress of your dreams from the get-go.

Getting started is simple enough—just start.

“I would normally advise starting the dress search as soon as possible,” says Susan Sorbello, owner of Sealed With a Kiss Bridal on Charlottesville’s Downtown Mall (and at Short Pump in Richmond), noting that different designers have different timelines for dress delivery, and that certain styles move in and out of production. So if you fall in love with a particular dress or designer, call around to find out who carries them and come to your appointment with any inspo you’ve collected.

You’ll find that your bridal consultant will be essential to this process. Her job is to put the bride at ease, understand the look she is trying to obtain, guide her in dress selection and, says Peggie Donowitz, owner of West Main Street’s The One Bridal Salon, “be able to suggest accessories and changes that might take a great dress into a one-of-a-kind dress.”

As with any great relationship, communication is key here. Tell your consultant as much as you can about what you like, loathe and are looking for, and be open to her suggestions.

Donowitz notes that plenty of brides end up falling in love with something totally different than what they’d come in settled on; a good rapport (and a generous timeline) leaves space for these kind of surprises in the fitting room.

As far as the appointments go, general shopping rules apply: Don’t be hungry, don’t be rushed, don’t be stressed (ha!) and wear nice underwear (in this case, nude garments similar to what you might be wearing with your actual gown).

Leaving out the entourage, or booking a separate appointment to “ooh” and “ahh” and

“Relax, have fun, and trust yourself. When you find it, you will know.” Peggie Donowitz cry a little bit with your besties, leaves you room to breathe and really evaluate how you feel in a dress. If you find yourself with a dress that you just don’t love, Sorbello says, you can always sell it and move on to something else, but once you’ve found the one (and here’s where Candy Baby just can’t help herself), stop looking! The right gown will make you feel “beautiful, comfortable and confident,” Donowitz says, and the alterations process will take a sample dress from something you want to walk down the aisle in to something you cannot imagine your big day without.

So, broad strokes? “How you feel in the dress is the emotion to capture,” says Sorbello, “not the cerebral analysis you do afterward.” You’ve got to, in the immortal words of Roxette, listen to your heart (maybe not the rest of that song, though; it doesn’t really set the lovey-dovey pre-wedding vibe).

he most elegant Southern barbecue dinner party you can imagine.” That was the bride’s vision for her wedding reception from the get-go. It was important to her to incorporate her Southern roots (Allison grew up in Tennessee) wherever possible, utilizing magnolia leaves at each place setting, incorporating blackberry filling in the cake to evoke the ones she’d picked for cobbler as a young girl and homing in on a family-style menu with plenty of Southern staples (mac ‘n’ cheese, fried chicken, a low-country boil).

“We wanted it to feel informal, fun and celebratory,” says Joby. That aesthetic spilled over into décor, as well, with flip-flops provided for dancing, cornhole boards made by the father of the bride and plenty of nods to the couple’s alma maters, the University of Tennessee and Ohio State. And, even though the couple agreed on no DIY when they started planning, they each got plenty hands-on: Allison hand-lettered invitations, signage, escort cards and place cards at each seat; Joby created the wedding website and welcome papers.

Still, even after all of that, their favorite moments were ones they couldn’t have planned: Allison’s face as she appeared over the ridge, the toasts from friends and family and the unexpected hot air balloon that touched down after the ceremony, providing the newlyweds with a picture-perfect moment.

Have your planner build in some time—only the two of you—following the ceremony “to be fully present with just each other and recharge between the chaos of the day and conversations with loved ones,” Rachel says.

W

hen it came to finding inspiration for their Virginia wedding, Rachel and Kevin looked a bit farther away than normal—nearly 3,000 miles, in fact, to California, where they’d been living for the past four years. They decided to meld the two styles, taking advantage of Virginia’s lush Blue Ridge landscape, but adding some contemporary West Elm-esque elements.

That presented itself in everything from the flowers (“a mix of favorites from Virginia, like magnolia foliage and white ranunculus, where our relationship began, and a mix of wildflower favorites from California (like the blush King Protea and white Dahlias), where we really flourished as a couple”) to the décor (“modern and structured, not draped or organic,” Rachel says).

Of course, planning a wedding in Virginia from their home in California presented some challenges, so some of their choices were dictated purely by distance. For instance, colors were kept to a minimum (black linens, white chairs) and used only as an accent in flowers and attire “to ensure the palette would match,” Rachel says.

Limiting what they DIYed, the bride designed the save the date, wedding invitations, menus, programs and bar signage herself.

When it comes down to it, though, ultimately the couple wanted the day to feel true to themselves: “Wear clothes we felt great in, eat food and drink cocktails we loved and participate in a ceremony true to our values and relationship,” Rachel says. “Staying true to ourselves and what we loved (instead of what was on trend) was the best way to refocus on our direction throughout the planning process.”

Longtime love

Rachel and Kevin dated for eight years (including a year and a half-long engagement) after meeting their freshman year at the University of Mary Washington. Halfway through their relationship, they moved to California together.

elanie wanted to elope. Susan wanted a fairy tale. So they went for the best of both words: a wedding that struck the right balance between elegance, glam and sophistication, but that also created a festive, warm and welcoming atmosphere for guests.

In more practical terms, that meant a clean color palette—white flowers (lilies, hydrangeas, roses and orchids), white linens (with a hint of sequin sparkle) and a few gold accents. For personal touches, they added a small pineapple to one of the tables (to remind them of Maui, where they got engaged), wine glasses with the JMU emblem for the table of Melanie’s college friends. and the couple drank from a pair of Norlan whisky glasses they had recently been gifted.

And settling on the venue itself was easy to agree on—they’d spent a weekend at Veritas in 2015 and, says Susan, “fell in love with the property.”

“Its majestic views, beautiful mountains and the amazing hospitality and food at the Farmhouse. At the time, we thought this would be an awesome venue for a wedding.”

And what was their favorite moment from the day? Says Susan, “All of it!”

n American bride, a French groom and a love so nice, they celebrated twice. The first wedding, a springtime fête in Saint-Malo, France, was “classic Hollywood, red carpet glam,” says Arnita. The second, a mid-summer affair at Keswick Vineyards, channeled the 2017 Christian Dior bridal couture collection—“cocktail glam, sequins and luxe materials.”

“I wanted it to feel very luxurious with a laid-back atmosphere,” says the bride. That meant rich purples and pinks, peacock feather accents and, wherever possible, glitter.

Of course, planning a wedding from her home in Paris was tricky, so Arnita had friends and family scouting venues for her, with two rules: It had to be at a vineyard (with an opportunity to “venture into the vines to make them a part of our day”), and the wine selection had to be amazing. Keswick fit the bill. From there, it was just a matter of working out the details from abroad.

The bride’s mom and aunt helped finalize a menu from L’étoile Catering, and the bride discussed details with Foxtail Cottage’s Karen Thorsey via phone.

“I explained everything I loved and hated and showed her team my creative vision that she then transformed for our special day,” Arnita says.

Come here often?

The couple met at a bar in Paris during an after-work happy hour and dated for a year and a half before getting engaged (and another year and a half before tying the knot).

Something blue

Laura had long-admired the blue stone in her mom’s engagement ring and knew that, when she got engaged, she wanted to emulate that unique choice. “[Kenny] made my dreams come true!” Laura says. “Now every time I look at it, I think of him and I think of my mom, and how being unique is a good thing.”

T

hough it wasn’t a phrase she’d ever heard before, “botanical elegance” kept ringing in the bride’s ears as she planned her big day.

“I wanted our wedding to feel timeless and classic with subtle elements of nature,” says Laura. “It really inspired a lot of my decisions, from the décor to the signature cocktails.”

The flowers themselves, of course, were a big part of the wedding’s aesthetic. Laura describes them as “straight from the garden,” with colors like blush, sage, clementine and lavender. More florals hung on the walls and eucalyptus branches lined the farm tables. It was easy incorporating these details into their venue, too. Downtown’s Old Metropolitan Hall, an historic spot with floor-to-ceiling mirrors and sparkling chandeliers, offered an extra element of sophistication.

“We also loved that it was still a blank canvas that we could add personalized touches to,” says Laura.

“It had been my dream to get married in Charlottesville for many years, and we are so lucky that we were able to get married right in the middle of it.”

Laura, a vegan for six years, and Kenny, who eats fairly plant-based as well, decided on a meat- and dairy-free menu: bruschetta, olive tapenade and hummus, roasted vegetable pasta, black-eyed pea and avocado salad, lemon dill green beans and more.

It’s science!

Laura and Kenny met in a chemistry class during their first year at Clemson University. There was a definite connection, Laura says, but they didn’t start dating until Kenny returned from studying abroad in Germany their senior year.

Familiar setting

When Drake and Charles first started dating, they took a quick trip from Washington, D.C., where they were living, to Blenheim’s tasting room, and remarked—well before it was time to think of such a thing—that it would be a beautiful spot for a wedding. When it came time to plan, they’d already crossed the venue off their list.

DIY details add to an elegant affair

ome DIY weddings can turn embarrassing, with an overwhelming amount of detail or disjointed aesthetic choices or—yikes!—décor slowly unraveling and coming unglued. This is none such wedding, thanks to the clear vision of the grooms, who from the start decided on a visual theme, which was simple and elegant, and committed to planning their big day on their own.

“The wedding was meant to embrace the outdoors, with the touches of white, some blues and wood accents. Earthy,” says Drake. Charles did most of the heavy lifting (“Drake supervised,” he offers) over the course of a few months—arrival kit, wedding programs, wine glass wedding favors included. The couple even handled the flowers, a mix of light blue and white hydrangeas with some white roses.

“We had 500 million boxes of flowers delivered to our hotel room,” says Drake, “which we arranged ourselves (with the help of family).”

Of course, they couldn’t control everything, and while the saying goes that April showers bring May flowers, the days leading up to their mid-May day were quite rainy, and on the Friday before the wedding, part of the road to their venue was flooded. Luckily, an hour before the ceremony, the sun came out and the outdoor wedding was clear. “We feel very lucky,” says Drake. In more ways than one, we’d imagine.

Second chances

The grooms didn’t want the same dry, plated entrées that had left them hungry at other weddings, so they asked The Local to create a Southern-style buffet. Says Drake, “All the best Southern carbs, pulled pork and fried chicken. No one was left hungry.”

The couple met at a bar in Washington, D.C., in early 2011. They connected briefly that night, but it wasn’t until months later that mutual friends reintroduced them.

They were married almost six years—to the day!—later.

Good thought

To play up the spring wedding aesthetic, Drake and Charles asked their guests to wear florals.

“Folks did not disappoint,” says Drake.

A

repurposed Dairy Queen sign signaled to guests that they’d arrived at the right place—Finnson Oaks, the bride’s childhood home. Just as it was important to include a nod to the family business (the Petersons have owned Dairy Queens since the 1950s), Laura couldn’t have seen getting married anywhere other than the house she grew up in.

“When my family moved to Staunton 30 years ago, my dad pointed at our house and said, ‘That is the house I want to live in someday,’” Laura says. “Thirteen years later, we moved there. I remember when he told me this story as a teenager and I thought, ‘I cannot get married anywhere else.’”

The couple utilized all of the property, hosting the cocktail hour in the front yard, and creating three areas in the back—a main area for tables and chairs, a koi pond and pergola where the cake was set surrounded by a fire pit and a dance floor a few steps up from the dining space.

With the setting decided, other details fell into place thanks to the couple’s innate sense of style. Laura, for instance, knew she wanted to wear dark oxblood-colored lipstick, and used that as inspiration for flowers. Stephen saw a photo of Ryan Gosling in a navy blue suit, which helped him decide what to wear. Laura’s boho dress guided the direction of the wedding’s décor, as in the plant-dyed silk ribbon that draped everywhere from the two-person swing to the front steps.

In all, Laura says they couldn’t have asked for a day that was more perfectly “them.” And, just in case you were wondering, yes, the wedding included DQ blizzards.

“We had my aunt and grandma make 150 blizzards and drive them from Winchester to the wedding and surprised my Dad with them during the reception,” Laura says.

At 5'2", Laura got a few giggles at her request for a massive, lush bouquet. It turned out just as she wanted, but, she says, “I will admit that I didn’t think how heavy it would be. During the ceremony we kept passing it down to a different person because it probably weighed 20 pounds!”

Second chance

Because Laura’s parents eloped, her own wedding was an especially exciting event for them. To honor them, the newlyweds had Laura’s parents cut their own wedding cake.

Worth the wait

A coworker of Stephen’s (and a friend of Laura’s) helped get them together, urging Stephen to ask Laura on a date. Because they’d both recently gotten out of relationships, they were reluctant to pursue anything new (Laura even made him wait for three hours on their first date!). “However, once we started talking, I knew why [our friend] had introduced us,” Laura says. “It was a perfect match.”

Eater’s choice

The couple opted for food stations—a barbecue table, a lighter table with salmon and Mediterranean fare and a Virginia cheese board and antipasti table—rather than plated entrées, to give guests some variety and encourage mingling.

Good thought

For guests who might be fading after a long day of revelry, Laura and Stephen hired a coffee cart to perk up the party after dinner and cake.
