Change is a good thing 32 After more than a decade of living in their house, two Albemarle homeowners knew just what they wanted out of an update. After all, they’d been thinking about it since their twin sons were 5. “There was an awareness that time would pass, and the house would grow with them,” says architect Bob Gray, who built the home.

When Barbara Stettner and Michael Ewan bought their 38-acre property in Sperryville —a retreat from their weekday lives in Washington, D.C.—they wanted both the home and the grounds (with a pool and guesthouse) —to meld the Virginia vernacular with references to northern California, where Stettner grew up.

onda and Mark Morriss had renovated several houses before, and they swore they were done with all that. They also thought they would downsize when they moved from Texas five years ago to be near their daughter and her family—they dreamed of a one-level house with less property to care for. “We did the opposite,” says Tonda. “We have more house, more property and two stories.” The reason for the switch? After they’d looked for property in several counties without success, the circa 1920 stucco home they found in the town of Orange was just too good to pass up. Situated on a big lot on a quiet street, it has a gracious front yard, great views out the back and a generous entry hall. Its detailing would also make a perfect backdrop for the furniture and objects that Tonda loves to collect from antique stores and Craigslist. “We thought we could do a lot with it,” says Tonda. “It was the challenge [that drew us].” Like all renovations, it’s been a journey. Though the house was structurally sound, it needed a lot of cosmetic work after having been owned by one family since 1962. The kitchen was very small, with laundry appliances wedged in among the cookspaces, and bathrooms needed to be refurbished. The Morrisses tackled all the work themselves except plumbing, electrical and HVAC updates. Mark became skilled at repairing plaster, and they took on painting, carpentry, tilework and refinishing floors. They’d moved in as soon as they bought the house, so they were living in the midst of the renovation, doing without a kitchen for a few months at a time and sealing off work areas with plastic to avoid getting their living spaces dusty. “We’ve regretted it lots of times,” says Tonda, laughing. “But now that we’re closer, we love it.” The first priority was the kitchen, located at the back of the house, and this was where the couple would make the only significant structural change. “We wanted openness between the kitchen and the family room,” says Mark. They took down a wall and replaced it with a salvaged beam and posts, letting their two main living spaces flow together. On a hunch, they pulled away part of a wall surface and exposed a brick chimney, lending texture to the room, and they improved the kitchen layout with a larger island and a corner banquette. (Laundry moved upstairs.) Marble countertops, white cabinets and subway tile are the contemporary details that balance quirkier touches, like the large antique pantry cabinet they’d brought with them from Texas. Ceramic taxidermy, patterned china and pickled-finish wood are repeating elements that pull together CONTINUED ON PAGE 15 the eclectic design. C-VILLE ABODE

A sunroom at the back of the house provides a view across the property’s sloping lawn, as well as natural light through the front hall (previous page). In the kitchen, modern finishes give a contemporary counterpoint to the homeowners’ quirkier décor, like the large antique pantry cabinet they brought with them from Texas. The dining room features a table that was handmade from an antique metal base and wooden planks salvaged from a barn.

The adjacent family room—formerly used as a dining room—centers on a simple brick fireplace painted white, its slim wooden mantle topped with an oval mirror and antique glass vases. A pair of salvaged doors stand like sculptures in opposite corners, and ethnic-print pillows contrast with the neutral furniture. The Morrisses made a front room, featuring arched built-in shelves, into their dining room, and built their own table from an antique metal base and wooden planks salvaged from a barn. The entry hall, with a large round rug and a collection of family photos and artwork lining the stairway, is well-lit thanks to natural light entering via a sunroom on the back of the house. There, the Morrisses closed in one side wall for privacy while retaining the view of their long, sloping lawn—where, says Tonda, all the neighborhood kids go sledding in winter. The formal sitting room contains one of the best discoveries of the Morrisses’ renovation, as well as a glimpse into the lives of two former owners. From 1942 to 1962, the house was owned by Graham Hawes Kemper and Aubrey Cowan Kemper, who had previously lived in

Rome and Japan while he served as a U.S. diplomat. The Morrisses were curious about the painted tiles around the fireplace in this room. “One evening, we decided to scrape off a little paint just to see what color the tiles were,” says Tonda. When she scraped a small area, she found the face of a bald eagle staring back at her—and as she and Mark kept scraping, they uncovered a couple of dozen different hand-painted birds, done in a Japanese style and signed “ACK,” likely meaning Aubrey Cowan Kemper.

A nearby formal sitting room provided the couple with the biggest discovery—fireplace tiles that had been hand-painted by the home’s former owner.

An addition made in the 1990s provided the house with a first-floor master suite, which features contemporary touches like a cathedral ceiling and a bay window to the backyard. Its high ceiling allowed the Morrisses to fit in a 10-foot-high mirror they’d scored for $100 from a former Masonic Lodge—it probably wouldn’t have squeezed into any other spot in the house. The couple even found a way to fashion the little side porch off the kitchen more to their liking. They added a concrete side wall, making this diminutive seating area feel like an enclosed oasis suffused with the sound of a small fountain on the nearby patio. Butter-yellow stucco and brightly patterned flowerpots (plus a longhorn skull displayed above the door) make the porch feel like a nod to the Morrisses’ Texas past. And a pair of salvaged doors with ironwork in their windows, installed in the wall near the parking area, tie the design back to the look of the interior. The couple are enjoying the house more and more as they cross projects off the list—and especially now that their daughter’s family has moved to the house right across the street. “We call it the villa,” says Mark. “It’s a nice refuge, something to take a lot of pride in.”

“We thought we could do a lot with it. It was the challenge [that drew us].” TONDA MORRISS

ack in the ’80s, I ran a landscape crew at Albemarle Farm and its later incarnation as John Kluge’s Morven Farm. I kept a wellthumbed, constantly annotated 3x5 spiral notewhite. The page for August reads: • Herbicide ailanthus (tree of heaven). • Check for sawfly larvae on conifers and oak caterpillars through September. • Seed and straw bare areas. • Spray hemlock with oil for spider mites when goldenrod begins to bloom. I certainly don’t spray herbicides on driveways anymore and I don’t have to worry about barberry looper, hemlock spider mites or sawfly larvae on the mugo pines because I’m no longer trying to maintain marginal varieties in an inhospitable climate. It’s too hot and humid for hemlocks to thrive here; barberries cold-shoulder native pollinators, catch winter trash in their thorny bare twigs and invade woodland edges; mugo pines—don’t get me started. And, although I did use oils and soaps, I was way too much of a nozzle-head when it came to chemical sprays. I don’t do that anymore, either. Bookended with an earlier stint at Monticello and subsequent adventure as head gardener at Albemarle House at the turn of the century (before Donald Trump bought it), I became irretrievably mired in the elite tradition of plantation/estate gardening, with its intricate Faulknerian histories, attendant staff, budgets, inventories and scheduling.

The original Morven estate—with its classic perennial beds and renowned Japanese garden—belongs to the University of Virginia, and is open for tours to locals, students and international visitors.

It spoiled me forever for working in my own garden (though I did my time hoeing the Monticello vegetable beds from east to west, west to east and back again). But what I really want is to walk around and inspect things, make lists and tell other people what to do. Perhaps a little light work in the late afternoon, as Thomas Jefferson was inclined. Although it ruined my character, estate gardening did expose me to an eccentric array of greenhouses and potting sheds, beginning with the now-defunct seed-sorting shed at Monticello and the tiny 1950s structure tacked on the back of the office at old Morven during Whitney and Anne Stone’s time there. The Kluge era saw the addition of an orchid house (now used for kitchen garden starts) and, at Morven Farms (now part of the Trump empire), two production greenhouses and a conservatory with small waterfalls where I used to fight whitefly and scale. The original estate of Morven lives on under its latest metamorphosis as a bequest to the Uni-

versity of Virginia, hosting thousands of locals, students and international visitors who enjoy the classic perennial beds and renowned Japanese garden. John Kluge’s ex-wife Patricia’s thatched roof potting shed on the hill above Albemarle House was the pinnacle of a dream garden. The simple plastered interior with floor-to-ceiling shelves filled with Italian clay pots and a casement window above the sink looking out onto yet more thatched buildings was like a Beatrix Potter illustration. What I have learned through my exposure to all this special real estate is that the most important garden is the one inside your mind, implemented in the ground as best you can with the resources at hand. However impractical your dreams and whatever the size of your plot or budget, all you really need for a properly run estate is decent soil, running water, a good crew and the right frame of mind.

Doing away with the sleepy bed and breakfast feel, The Clifton’s new design appeals to a more urban crowd, with richer tones and soft textures on rugs, drapery and upholstery.

Inn and out The Clifton plays it cool By Lisa Martin

W

hen Charles D’Angelo, managing director of D.C.-based Westmount Capital Group, first saw the Clifton Inn and its surrounding countryside, his initial thought was, “Wow.” “It’s a stunning property, from the 19-acre lake and Blue Ridge mountain views to the infinity pool with the canopy of trees overhead,” says D’Angelo. As a business enterprise, however, the inn was struggling. Though renovated several times in recent decades, including a large-scale overhaul in 2005 after a devastating fire, the inn’s reputation had been waning, its wedding bookings falling from a high of 50 in 2011 to just 11 for this year. At the end of a complicated and lengthy negotiation, a deal was struck in late 2017 between Mitch and Emily Willey, the hotel’s owners since 1983, and the investor duo of D’Angelo’s Westmount Capital and the McGeorge family of Richmond. When the dust settled, the new owners immediately opted for more dust, closing the hotel 20

for the first quarter of 2018 for renovations, rebranding and an infusion of new technology. “All 20 rooms were renovated, plus the restaurant, the bar and the front desk, and we installed bright new software,” says Francois Brandt, the hotel’s general manager. “As well, we now have a Michelin-starred chef, Matthew Bousquet, who came to us from California.” D’Angelo knew that a great chef would be a key element of the hotel’s future success, as

would the new branding, updated by Watermark in Charlottesville, and interior design, recast by the in-house design team at Tennessee-based Blackberry Farm. “The renovations were mostly cosmetic,” he says. “For a building that old, it’s in very good shape.” Cool blues, greens and grays replaced the former white and cream interior, with an emphasis on the comforting surrounds of soft rugs, draperies, upholstery and artwork as patrons ease into their dinner or cocktail. With the new branding came a name change as well. Now dubbed simply The Clifton, the change reflects a mindset. “We wanted to get away from the sleepy bed and breakfast idea, toward something a little more modern that would draw in a more urban crowd,” says D’Angelo. “Having a true country getaway feel, only minutes away from the city, is a real advantage. I think of The Clifton as a boutique hotel that does phenomenal weddings, where you can also have one of the best meals in Charlottesville.” C-VILLE ABODE

hen your home-to-be is 109 years old, chances are, renovations will precede move-in. Such is the case for UVA president-elect James Ryan and family, who will relocate to Charlottesville in August 2018 but will wait until next summer to move into Carr’s Hill, the presidential residence. Carr’s Hill is currently undergoing $7.88 million worth of renovation and restoration. The Ryans will review selections for the ground floor, primarily used for hosting events. But the project goes far beyond aesthetic changes. “The university’s historic rehabilitation project at Carr’s Hill will restore historic features, correct longstanding structural issues and modernize mechanical, electrical, plumbing and life safety systems,” said Anthony de Bruyn, university spokesperson. The Board of Visitors approved the project in the 2017 Multi-Year Capital Plan. Carr’s Hill has not been repaired since 2007, and this will be its first full-building renovation. A new roof and a central air system are included in the plan, and cabinets and light fixtures will be restored or replaced. The architect overseeing the project is Glavé & Holmes Architecture. Due to utility upgrades in the area, the landscape around the house will be renovated as well, by Charlottesville firm Wolf/Josey.

While UVA’s president-elect and his family await the project’s completion, they will live in Pavillion VIII on the east side of the Lawn.

River of dreams Designing for flow in a Belmont backyard By Lisa Martin

T

C-VILLE ABODE

Regionally sourced limestone, quartz and granite form a “mountain” from which a gently tiered, purling river flows.

Most challenging were the centerpieces of landscape: the river and mountain constructions. “It took a while to even dawn on me how large the scope of the project was,” says Bristow, an expert in both rock and water features. “It was a lot to integrate.” Installing the deck footings, wires, water pipes, lights, abutting concrete sections and rock structures in the proper order

ucked behind a 1920s-era house on a small Belmont lot lies a modern wonder: a water garden oasis featuring ornamental plantings, a raised deck surrounded by a black slate patio, a hand-carved fire pit and a mountainous stone structure from which a waterfall cascades gently into a tiered, purling river. The landscape plan was dreamed up by homeowner Peter Fenlon, a game designer and publisher of the internationally famed Settlers of Catan series, whose studio is ensconced in a sprawling two-story structure behind the garden. “I was born in Japan,” he says, “and that influences the storytelling here quite a bit.” Starting with the two Japanese maples flanking the front entrance, grown from “seedlings of seedlings” dating back to his birthplace, Fenlon’s penchant for meaningful design is evident. Acquiring the house in 2001 after it had been gutted by flippers, Fenlon and his wife, Olivia, gradually made it their own, eventually doubling its size. Over the last five years they’ve widened the structure’s footprint on three sides and added a third floor—a high-ceilinged, lightfilled space thanks to 13 Tuscan-style windows. The most complex upgrade thus far has been the landscaping, and in 2016 the Fenlons partnered with landscape architect Zoe Edgecomb and Lithic Construction project manager Brian Bristow to lay out their plans. “We wanted to do a natural garden that focused on native plantings and rock, and was very low-maintenance and sustainable,” says Fenlon. Consistent with that vision, all of the rock is regionally sourced, a mix of limestone, quartz and granite. “The deck is a combination of cedar and Cumaru—a sustainable, tropical teak that is very resilient and extremely dense,” he says. The fire pit comprises three pieces of granite from Red Hill quarry, fitted together like a puzzle and then hand-carved to form a center bowl.

required a careful mix of timing and balance, even as the project continued to evolve. For the mountain, Bristow used a truck crane to hoist huge rocks one at a time into a pile, spinning them into place and chipping off corners to round the look as it took shape. The black concrete river basin was technically difficult as well. “It had to be strong and waterproof, and both the bottom and sides had to be done in one pour,” says Bristow. “I’ve done a lot of water features, but this one was unique.” Fenlon’s thoughtful inspirations, from a cocktail/breakfast nook next to the waterfall, to a large, sliding cedar “moon gate” in the tall but neighbor-friendly fence (which looks the same on both sides), have made their back yard a sanctuary within reach of the city, in a location the couple treasures. “There are no stoplights between me and the Appalachian Trail, and from the third floor I can see all the way to the Blue Ridge,” says Fenlon, “yet I can walk to restaurants in Belmont. What could be better?” 23

Adding structure The garden at Waterperry gains a house of glass By Erika Howsare

STEPHEN BARLING

K

atherine Kane had always imagined a greenhouse in a certain spot at her magnificent garden at Waterperry Farm in western Albemarle. And not just for sheltering plants. “There are two kinds of greenhouses,” says architect Jeff Bushman, who customized the kit that Kane bought from the English company Alitex. “There are purely service buildings, and then there are those that are really part of the design, and contribute to making spaces.” The Waterperry greenhouse, of course, is one of the latter type. English gardens are Kane’s primary inspiration for the 10 acres of specimen trees, walkways, flowering perennials and fountains that she’s painstakingly designed and installed since 1990. Her gardens include formal geometric “rooms” as well as meandering paths under shade trees, and they’re carefully laid out to align with axes that begin at her farmhouse. The greenhouse is an element meant to extend and complete a section of that overarching design—much more than a workspace that could just as easily be tucked out of sight. “In English gardens, they always make the greenhouse part of the garden,” says Kane. This one certainly earns its spot in Waterperry’s lovingly tended beds. The kit, says Kane, is like a “giant Erector Set,” with aluminum framing elements that can be combined in any number of ways. “You can build anything you want,” says Bushman. The greenhouse’s dimensions and siting were two interconnected questions; Kane had a spot in mind that was already constrained in several ways. “We wanted to work with the natural grade,” she says. The greenhouse also needed to center on a major cross-axis through the gardens, culminating in an archway covered with clematis and roses. And it needed to fit between two existing trees. Bushman shifted the greenhouse footprint around within these limitations until he and Kane were satisfied. Though other similar greenhouses Kane had seen were fairly low to the ground, Bushman designed this one to be taller, with a 14 1/2-foot center ridgeline decorated with fleur de lis orna-

ments. “It’s the perfect scale for that garden,” says Kane, who’d previously planted upright columnar boxwoods in a nearby section, in themselves now 13 feet tall. “The greenhouse needed to have its own presence,” she says. A bluestone patio provides a transition to the greenhouse’s stone foundation, as well as space for a bit of seating and some pots of flowers. Inside, one steps onto a floor of Old Carolina brick, laid in a herringbone pattern. “I loved mixing brick and bluestone,” says Kane. “I wanted it to look old.”

Under that floor hides a radiant heat system, and the greenhouse is also furnished with radiators to nurture young seedlings. This winter, Kane started about 180 annuals in the greenhouse and grew salad greens, too. Three workbenches, also sourced from Alitex, are filled with Hydroleca clay pellets for optimum drainage. The greenhouse was installed in winter 2017 and already looks like a fully integrated part of the Waterperry vision. Behind it, ever on the lookout for a new place to add a bed, Kane is growing river birch, Japanese iris, sedum and lavender.

“In English gardens, they always make the greenhouse part of the garden.” KATHERINE KANE

Dream digs In the Charlottesville architecture lexicon, the name Jim Tuley is an important one. The UVA professor designed many homes in Charlottesville and Albemarle in the ’70s and ’80s, and this contemporary property just north of town— built in 1976—is in classic Tuley vernacular: an angular form, an abundance of natural light owing to the many windows (including one that’s spherical), sizable spaces and easy navigation. Plus, plenty of outdoor space from which to drink in the surroundings. The property’s 35 acres features Mechams River frontage and two (two!) 150-year-old stone chimneys. If you can swing it, this five-bedroom, four-and-a-half-bath blast from the past is worth a look.

Change is a good thing An Albemarle family grows with their house By Erika Howsare

32

C-VILLE ABODE

ver about a dozen years of living in their home on an Albemarle byway, the couple saw many changes. Their twin sons grew from age 5 to nearly 18, and the family’s use of spaces in the house changed along with the boys. More houses were built along their stretch of rural byway. And the gardens around the house matured and evolved. So, when the time came to make some updates, the clients possessed an understanding of what they wanted born from years of observation, and from bringing their own sensibilities to bear on what architect Bob Gray had originally designed. When Gray imagined the house, he and his clients knew it was important to consider the needs of the kids, then very young. Yet they also foresaw the changes that would naturally occur in the family structure. “There was an awareness that time would pass, and the house would grow with them,” says Gray. With its main spaces laid out on a single floor, along one long axis, the house offers a connected family experience despite being generously proportioned. More formal spaces—living room, dining room—sit at the south end of the house, facing a mountain view. Behind these are the heart of the home, where kitchen and family room flow together with a built-in banquette for family meals. Another nearby room served, in the beginning, as a play room. “There were Legos everywhere,” remembers interior designer Kathy Heiner. Today, it’s a family office, with desk space for multiple people to work at the same time, and a home for the clients’ extensive record collection. “They wanted easy access to the kids, and a safe environment, but with some separation between the master bedroom and the kids’ bedrooms,” says Gray. The kids sleep on the second floor, at the top of a curved-wall staircase, while the master suite is found below. The layout of the house is activated by one unusual choice: Gray shifted the long central hallway a few degrees off parallel with the exterior walls of the house. “It gives it a dynamic that’s interesting,” says Gray—walls that are slightly off square with the hardwood flooring, and unexpected angles inside rooms. This hallway serves as a gallery for the owners’ art collection, which includes photography, paintings and sculpture. “There’s a modest architectural vocabulary, but their art collection enriches it immensely,” says Gray.

Truth be told, though, the house itself contains plenty of architectural interest. Barrel-vault ceilings enliven the formal living room and the hallway. At the entrance to the dining room, two beveled columns appear to float between floor CONTINUED ON PAGE 35

Lots of windows, including nearly full-height corner windows in the living room, answer the clients’ desire for the house to be “tied to the outdoors.”

Working with designer Kathy Heiner, the homeowners changed up the interiors in several rooms of the house. and ceiling as they taper upward. Touches like these open a conversation between the “contemporary farmhouse” look of the exterior, and a modern and even postmodern sensibility evident inside. “For the overall system,” says Gray of his clients, “they’re very controlled, but they understand the magic of bringing color in the details. It’s textured and has a modern quality.” Naturalfinish cherry kitchen cabinets and cherry flooring bring warmth to the mostly white-walled spaces, and the detailing on the fireplace and built-in cabinetry is crisp and minimal. Lots of windows, including nearly full-height corner windows in the living room, answer the clients’ desire for the house to be “tied to the C-VILLE ABODE

outdoors,” says Gray. “They wanted it to have a rural sensibility, and to be rooted.”

A new look Working with Heiner, the clients recently changed up several of the interiors, including the living and dining rooms. The former got a new seating arrangement, with two long facing sofas and two Italian midcentury-modern armchairs, all placed on a lantern-patterned rug from Restoration Hardware. A highlight of the room is the sensual, modern Wendell Castle Sizzle table, with a wooden top and high-gloss sides. A brightly colored plastic resin sculpture by Thomas Linder stands in one corner window, and a pair of paintings by Casey Vogt hangs near the door to the patio. A Russ Warren sculpture

is just outside in the hallway, leading one toward the dining room, where a Roll & Hill globe chandelier takes center stage. One of Heiner’s favorite rooms is the little powder room, which got a coat of dark navyblue paint and a floating metal vanity cabinet. Two SkLO glass pendant lights and an Amy Stein photograph make the small room decisively modern. Heiner and the clients plan to make further interior changes in the family room and other spaces, as the house continues to evolve with its occupants. “They’re very good about selecting something they can live with for a long time,” says Gray, referring to finishes and other long-term design choices, “and then changing other things.” CONTINUED ON PAGE 37

The great outdoors

Outside, architect Bob Gray sited the poolhouse to one side of the property’s wide lawn, while landscape architect Anne Pray had the intimidating task of adding in the pool, hardscapes and plantings to complement the garden already in place. Inside the poolhouse, designer Kathy Heiner mixed modern pieces with more ethnic ones. With its hilltop, open-meadow environment, the house had always been intended to feel “comfortable on the site,” as architect Bob Gray says. Over time, the gardens—originally laid out by landscape architect Warren Byrd—had become a focal point for the owners, who poured energy into adding and tending plants, especially in a long, deep planting bed along an Eastern red cedar hedge. The house had generous outdoor living space from the start—a patio with a pergola and a fireplace. Yet this proved to be a hot place for summertime dinners, and as they looked ahead to a pool and poolhouse project—which they’d always known they would add someday—they wanted to include a shadier dining area. Gray sited the poolhouse to one side of the wide lawn that spills out from the house. The pool, lying parallel to the house, differentiates the lawn into various outdoor rooms—and the poolhouse interior feels like one of them. “They wanted a garden pavilion that was very accessible to the outdoors,” says Gray, who specified folding glass doors that can open two sides of the poolhouse completely. A dining table sits just outside, in a well-shaded spot. Gray designed the poolhouse with two distinct sections—a living area with kitchenette and powder room, and a utility area, hidden from the house’s sightline, to hold gardening equipment. The roofline, like that of the main house, is steep, creating a high cathedral ceiling. Shiplap walls and a full-range bluestone floor continuous with the patio outside make for a crisp palette.

C-VILLE ABODE

Inside, designer Kathy Heiner placed four chairs made from woven seat belt straps and a green ottoman on casters, all of them easy to move for different occasions. A purple bar unit with a brushed aluminum top can also be rolled indoors or out. Landscape architect Anne Pray collaborated with Gray to lay out the pool and hardscapes, and then she faced the task of adding plantings to complement the extensive garden already in place. “It’s an intimidating piece to riff off—it’s

so well done,” she says. “The new garden had to take a different attitude.” Whereas the existing garden is about “color, flowers, playfulness,” the newer one looked to the nearby meadow for inspiration. Drumstick allium, autumn moor grass and liatris fill the beds, anchored by sweetbay magnolia trees. Pray designed these to be planted in a matrix rather than rows, lending a mixed, natural feel. “The boxwoods ground the formality and geometry,” she says, “and they’re nice in winter.” A low fieldstone wall separates the pool from the lawn and helps create a layering of spaces; an opening in its center is aligned with the steps down from the house. The pool is a dark color to create crisper reflections. “It picks up the light in an interesting way; it could be a pond,” says Pray. Heiner chose a Brazilian table and ottomans made from nautical rope to bring color to the outdoor spaces, along with JANUS et Cie chaise lounges and Indonesian teak side tables. Richard Schultz settees in a midcentury modern style provide seating on the house’s original stone patio. Just as in the house, a sense of changeability exists alongside the solidity of the design. The owners hope to add a mural to one side of the poolhouse, alongside the outdoor shower. And they get creative with furniture, recently moving dining tables onto the lawn between the house and the pool. “It made it feel like a room,” says Heiner. “It’s an incredible space for all different types of gatherings.”

Above the bend California meets Virginia at a riverside getaway By Erika Howsare

B

A poolhouse designed by Adams Sutphin sits on a hill overlooking the river.

Photography by Bill Mauzy

arbara Stettner grew up in the wine country of northern California, but she’d been in Virginia for 15 years before she found her weekend place in Sperryville. “It’s sort of like the coastal mountains [in California],” she says, looking toward the layered Blue Ridge views. In 2011, when she and her husband, Michael Ewen, bought this 38-acre retreat from their weekday lives in the Washington, D.C., area, she immediately began to envision a pool and guesthouse. And she knew she’d want them to reflect both her West Coast roots and the rural Virginia traditions that surround her at River’s Bend. Named after a curve in the Thornton River that flows past one edge of the farm, River’s Bend came with a large building, about a dozen years old, that combines horse barn and living quarters under one roof. Stettner keeps three horses here and exercises them on trails as well as in the ring she installed. The pool and guesthouse occupy a spot of high ground which, says landscape architect Todd Shallenberger of Waterstreet Studio, is more dramatic than it seems from the main house. “It appears like a knoll, but when you get over here you can hear the river, and when you stand on the edge, you experience it as a bluff,” he says. “It’s a powerful landscape.” CONTINUED ON PAGE 47

Mixing Virginia and California vernacular, stone from a fallen wall on an adjoining property faces the guesthouse, while a lighter-hued travertine lines the patio. CONTINUED FROM PAGE 45

Waterstreet’s first project for the couple was to restore a third of a mile of riverfront. Along with the creation of an equestrian trail, this project helped stabilize the slope and, through the removal of invasives and the installation of native trees and plants, increased biodiversity in the riparian zone. Redbud, dogwood, hemlock, viburnum and wildflowers like bluebell and wild geranium now line the river. Meanwhile, architect Adams Sutphin was working on initial plans for the guesthouse. Stettner was keen that it have the indoor/outdoor feel that’s so common in California structures. “I wanted it to be open and connected and to fit with the landscape,” she says. Two sides of the house—one facing the western view, one facing the pool—open completely via folding doors, earning the building the moniker Shallenberger uses for it: pavilion. Shallenberger designed a Western red cedar pergola that centers on the pool’s long axis. “It acts as a transition and frames the mountain views,” he explains. Materials were an important aspect of the discussions between Shallenberger and Stettner. She didn’t want to be a “hilltopper”— a local pejorative for city folk who build grand getaways on high ground—and that C-VILLE ABODE

demanded the design not be too suburban in style. “I didn’t want this to look like it belongs in McLean,” she says. Using local vernacular materials would help ground the project in Rappahannock County tradition. One lucky break was gaining access to a fallen stone wall on an adjoining property. There was enough stone to face most of the guesthouse and to construct new walls around the pool and pergola. Standing-seam metal roofing recalls barn roofs, as does white oak board-and-batten siding, and reclaimed beams hold up the cathedral ceiling inside. While bluestone is a common (and local) choice for patios, Stettner preferred something in a tan hue, more reminiscent of California and the Mediterranean, underfoot. “Limestone was

too absorptive, but we found this travertine skimmed with grout,” says Shallenberger. Inside the guesthouse, French pillowed limestone floor tiles continue the warm color palette. Shallenberger specified low stone walls around the pool deck, the right height for seating. Some of them form planters in which pennisetum grasses catch the breezes. Dogwood and serviceberry trees grow at the far end of the pool, and two sugar maples flank the path from the parking area. Stettner also planted a few fruit trees so her grandkids could re-enact another California memory—picking fresh fruit just after swimming. Large boulders found on-site sit at the pool deck corners, “to help loosen it up,” says Shallenberger. In the future, the team plans to add a gentle walkway from the pergola down to a deck on the very edge of the bluff. It will feel like being suspended in the treetops, and it’ll give an exciting view of the river below. Stettner also hopes to partner with a local winery to grow about 10 acres of grapes on the slopes between the guesthouse and main house. Shallenberger says this was one of those sites that signaled the architecture to just stay out of the way. “Everything is minimal, because the view is so incredible,” he says. “You can always hear the river. That’s the hidden element in this whole composition.” 47

A Room of One’s Own

VIRGINA HAMRICK

This south-facing Farmington sunroom is not your typical sunroom, says its designers, Kathleen Conroy and Chloe Ball of Kenny Ball Design. “Our client likes to entertain, so the open room offers space for overflow during dinner and cocktail parties,” Conroy says. With such close proximity to the dining room and kitchen, the designers’ goal was to create a space that could be used for setting up a buffet or bar for overflow at dinner or cocktail parties, but that could also double as a room for the clients’ grandkids to play games and put together jigsaw puzzles. The soapstone floors were restored and the designers repurposed Pierre Frey window treatments from the clients’ former home into upholstery on the chaise and chair. But the true showpiece is a custom table at the center of the room. Its twisty bronze base, forged by local blacksmith Ed Pelton, provides support for an Evolution Glass top made from recycled bottles.
