The annual pep rally marks the beginning of UVA’s football season, which the Cavs kicked off on the right foot when they defeated the Richmond Spiders 42-13 at Scott Stadium on Saturday, September 1. During the game, Virginia’s new quarterback, Bryce Perkins, became the first UVA quarterback to rush for more than 100 yards and rush for two touchdowns in nearly a decade. The team travels to Bloomington this week to take on Indiana University at 7:30pm on Saturday, September 8.

ublic meetings held by elected officials in Charlottesville no longer go uninterrupted. But the August 30 Albemarle County School Board meeting in which six people were arrested and one was hospitalized was a meeting of a different breed.

For about a year, the Hate-Free Schools Coalition of Albemarle County has pressured the school board to reexamine its dress code policy, and ban all Confederate imagery in an effort to dismantle systemic racism.

When the school board shut down its August 23 meeting after half an hour because of alleged disruption from the antiracist activists, it planned a special August 30 meeting to resume its business, but with no public comment session.

It was at that meeting that some members of the Hate-Free Schools Coalition and other community activists held their own open forum outside the doors of Lane Auditorium, where the school board was holding its public session in the Albemarle County Office Building.

Cheers and chants from the group could be heard inside the auditorium, and things got ugly after county officials asked coalition members to quiet down.

“We aren’t going anywhere, and the more they try to silence us, the louder we will be,” said organizer Lara Harrison to about 50 people who were seated in folding chairs.

She called for the resignation of board member Jason Buyaki, who wore a necktie featuring versions of historic Confederate flags to the previous meeting.

“Racists must resign,” the group started chanting loudly as County Executive Jeff Richardson approached and said they’d have to lower their volume or leave. It wasn’t long before police cuffed Hate-Free Schools Coalition organizer Amanda Moxham, who was leading the group chant, and their chorus changed to sounds of screaming, and people falling over chairs made of plastic and metal.

Some community members demanded to see officers’ badge numbers as the police arrested four people outside the auditorium.

Michael Reid was knocked to the ground

by Deputy Police Chief Greg Jenkins, who claimed Reid assaulted him. The plainclothes cop straddled Reid and scolded him while aggressively gesturing at him with his right pointer finger.

Reid lay motionless on the ground for several seconds. Onlookers noticed his face beginning to turn purple, and continually called for him to receive medical attention.

Three uniformed officers, all larger than Reid, surrounded him and cuffed him tightly. Opening his eyes, Reid yelled that they were hurting him, and agreed to stand once they loosened his cuffs. Reid was escorted out on his feet, and police said an ambulance had been called for him. He was discharged from the emergency room with a summons that night.

Approximately two dozen police officers were on the scene.

Onlookers called for medical help as Michael Reid lay motionless on the ground. Police said an ambulance arrived for him after they arrested him and escorted him out of the building.

eveloper Keith Woodard has abandoned his plan to build a $50 million castle of downtown luxury condos and retail space on a city-owned Water Street parking lot.

“The project was a tremendous undertaking, and over time, the process of obtaining the necessary approvals became very difficult and at times adversarial, causing continual delays and uncertainty,” according to a press release from Susan Payne, a spokesperson with a local public relations group that represented the now-defunct West2nd development.

When Woodard responded to the city’s request for project proposals in early 2014, “it was a different City Council and different circumstances,” he said in the release.

That was under then-mayor Satyendra Huja. While several council members have come and gone since then, Mayor Nikuyah Walker and Vice-Mayor Heather Hill, the two newest ones, have both openly opposed and voted against the project.

But inside Lane Auditorium, school board members did not appear to be concerned about what had just happened right outside of their doorway. They continued with their scheduled agenda, which included an update on the school division’s new anti-racism policy.

A panel of nine volunteer students has been tasked with writing the policy that will be implemented at all county schools, says school spokesperson Phil Giaramita.

“Truly, [racism] has become part of the daily life we go through every day,” said Western Albemarle High School senior and policy writer Cyrus Rody-Ramazani. “It breeds, or it almost makes people feel comfortable.”

So far, the students have suggested an anonymous reporting system for racism.

This fall, they will officially present the policy they’ve drafted, and Giaramita says the division is waiting to hear their recommendations before addressing the dress code.

County schools are also considering the “constitutional issues” of a dress code that

Inside the meeting, a small group of antiracist activists were peacefully protesting.

Most had tape across their mouths that said “ban it,” and some held a massive sign that read, “racists don’t get re-elected.”

Three of those protesters “became disorderly,” according to a press release from the Albemarle County Police Department, and School Board Chair Kate Acuff asked them to leave. Two of them were also arrested.

Moxham was not charged. Reid was charged with trespassing, along with Andrea Lynn Massey, Sabr Lyon, Lara Lynn Harrison, Samantha Wren Cadwalder Peacoe, and Francis Xavier Richards. The latter two were also charged with obstruction of justice, and all arrestees were processed at the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail, except for Reid, because he was hospitalized.

“The School Board as a group was committed to getting through the business it was elected to do,” Acuff said in the release. “Fortunately, with the help from the county attorney and county police, we were able to do that. We strive to hold meetings in a civilized manner.”

Superintendent Matt Haas said in the same release, “We are grateful to the Albemarle County Police Department and county staff for protecting our board, staff, parents, students, and community members.

Overall, we were able to have a peaceful and productive meeting thanks to their efforts.”

Said Commonwealth’s Attorney Robert Tracci, who was also on the scene, “The right of free expression provides no right to engage in criminal misconduct.”

Protesters who left the building were not allowed to re-enter the public meeting, and press was only allowed to go back inside after showing credentials.

bans specific imagery, rather than the code’s current language that prohibits students from wearing anything violent or vulgar.

In fact, they’ve been burned for that before.

In April 2002, Alan Newsom, a Jack Jouett Middle School sixth-grader, wore a purple T-shirt advertising the NRA Shooting Sports Camp he had attended the previous weekend to learn about rifle target shooting and gun safety.

Newsom was asked to remove the shirt with three firearms on it, which led to a $150,000 First Amendment lawsuit against the school board, the superintendent, and Jack Jouett principals.

After two years of litigation, the suit was settled and a judge allowed Newsom to wear his purple NRA camp shirt to school.

The new dress code policy proposed by the Hate-Free Schools Coalition is grounded on the premise that: “All children deserve to feel safe in school.”

Lyon, who was arrested at the August 30 school board meeting, held a sign with those words painted on it at the meeting the previous week.

“The bottom line is we’re trying to protect our kids,” says Moxham, a mother of three.

Immediately following the election in 2016, she says a group of students wore Black Lives Matter shirts to school. “And in response to that, a number of students coordinated to wear Confederate imagery to school in order to intimidate...It got so bad that the police were actually called.”

Moxham says this instance has been corroborated by eye-witnesses including students, but school officials deny it ever happened.

“I do know of one incident that resembles this story because a member of the coalition brought it up some time ago, and I was able to track down the facts by speaking with the assistant principal who was personally involved,” says Giaramita.

distributing Black Lives Matter shirts before class in the cafeteria. A few students said they were offended, and would wear confederacy-related shirts, which they did the next day.

“The assistant principal talked with all students involved and according to him, the student who was distributing the Black Lives Matter shirt willingly agreed to no longer do so and the students wearing the Confederate shirts agreed to no longer do so.”

This approach of education and counseling over discipline is what’s now being considered in the revised dress code, “ironically enough,” says Giaramita.

In his version of the story, police were not present. County police were not immediately able to corroborate either record.

Coalition members plan to continue fighting to end racism in schools.

“Confederate imagery and Confederate history certainly needs to be remembered, but it doesn’t need to be revered,” says Moxham. “By not explicitly banning the Confederate flag and white nationalist imagery, they are allowing for, enabling, and not making a strong statement that this is a school that supports non-discrimination and anti-racism.”

“Families coming together to oppose white supremacy in our schools are not the enemy here,” coalition members said in a statement. “Don’t believe the County public relations machine when it tells you that police throwing [Reid] over a row of chairs while arresting him (sending him to the hospital) on August 30 was necessary to have a civil and orderly society. It was not.”

Most people who go to their favorite restaurant on a Saturday night probably give little thought to what’s happening behind the scenes in the kitchen once they’re seated and have ordered cocktails. And while they may know what will show up on their table, ultimately the strange alchemy of how it gets there—sometimes through a well-choreographed dance, other times an awkward stepping on toes involving the need to slap away a set of roaming hands—remains a mystery. As culinary historian Leni Sorensen puts it, “It’s all theater, anyway: Basically it’s all kind of made up in a restaurant, so you have to get everyone in the kitchen to have one director like every play has and you do what the director tells you to do. Why? Because they’ll fire your ass and you’ll hand over your script to someone waiting in the wings for your job.” Only the script doesn’t always run according to plan.

She demonstrates pressure-point therapy to provide immediate calming, as well as a finger-holding technique that can tamp down stress responses. She suggests ways to mitigate chronic problems inherent in working on one’s feet, such as plantar fasciitis, which generates a lot of interest. And she hands out several sheets with resources and tips for help.

The women lament the many physical demands required of their chosen profession: aching backs, tight calves, sore heels.

But they know those types of setbacks are to be expected, just as they know that inappro-

It’s a steamy Monday evening in August, but inside Junction restaurant in Belmont, the air is cool and the food—a potluck supper on steroids, prepared by some of the finest chefs in town—is amazing. There’s an artfully displayed platter of local heirloom tomatoes in rainbow hues, interspersed with basil and multi-colored cherry tomatoes still on the vine. Nearby sits a generous tray of sweet potato jalapeño scallion cakes with aioli, as well as delicate crostini bruschetta, fresh radishes on toast points, salads with beans and peppers and orzo and other pastas, goat cheese and cauliflower bread pudding, trays of charcuterie, homemade bagels, a vat of homemade tomato sauce, and, of course, desserts: decadent brownies, artfully stacked around a plate peppered with blackberries and mint leaves and dusted with confectioners sugar, as well as bite-sized mini-cheesecake.

Executive chef Close-Hart has opened her doors to host the CWIF’s monthly meetings. But tonight, members are learning something that most of these busy women probably don’t get around to practicing regularly: self-care. Two massage therapists in one corner try to work knots out of shoulders and soothe pressure points along necks and scalps to alleviate stress and migraines.

While the women nosh on the abundant snacks, masseuse Cecilia Mills offers suggestions for helping to balance what can be a stressful life in the food business.

It’s made even more complicated in a small food community like Charlottesville, where women are reluctant to discuss anything untoward for fear of retribution.

“Everyone is afraid to talk about it and no one wants to do so other than privately because they’re afraid for their jobs,” Libby says. “No one wants to go on record. It needs to be talked about but I don’t know how you do that. It’s tricky.”

One local female farmer spoke about a particularly handsy restaurateur she encountered early in her career: “I delivered to a restaurant and the owner slapped my ass and made a comment about me being a hottie,” she says. “It’s awkward—I mean how do you respond to that? You could see it as a compliment—I’m a hottie, yay me,” she says, rolling her eyes. “But I just want to do my job and not deal with that.”

She says this man subsequently went on to send inappropriately suggestive text messages as well. She adds that she was young and naïve, and feared that if she said something about it being offensive, she ran the risk of him not buying her produce.

“Look, I don’t want to ruin the guy, but he has to stop doing that,” she says. “I mean, it’s bad enough with him smacking a delivery woman’s butt, but I imagine his employees have experienced a lot more than that, and that’s not okay.”

Hobbs-Page says there was clearly a need for women to unite for a common cause.

Starting this group coincided with the groundswell of the #MeToo movement,

It’s one thing to be hoisting heavy pots and racing up and down flights of stairs to retrieve 50-pound cases of food, or to be jammed alongside several others with sharp knives and searing pans in a space not much bigger than a broom closet, with the temperature hovering well above the 90-degree mark. It greatly complicates matters, though, when you’re a woman busting your butt to do your job, often while having to prove yourself capable of working in the rough trenches of a commercial kitchen, only to have a male colleague grab your ass, gawk at your breasts, or even make crass sexualized—and most unwelcome—remarks.

In the food profession in general—and certainly here in Charlottesville—these are just some of the difficulties women deal with regularly in a male-dominated industry— and they’re a primary reason for the founding of Charlottesville Women in Food, a sort of female-empowerment support group for local food professionals that Phyllis Hunter, owner of the Spice Diva, dreamed up with Caromont Farm owner Gail Hobbs-Page and Junction executive chef Melissa Close-Hart.

“There were some issues I’d started hearing about in Charlottesville, so I thought women may need someone to talk to,” Hunter says. “It wasn’t just one incident. I’d started hearing about customers who were harassing females in restaurants, and even getting questions about employment issues.

I’m very much aware of how women are not paid the same as men, and how female chefs aren’t recognized, and have a very hard time getting financial backing for their businesses.

Those were all issues I wanted to take up, so I talked to Gail and we said, ‘Let’s do this.’”

Around the same time, a video produced by the Local Palate to promote the Charlottesville food industry fell flat when women in the profession saw how male-centric the production was. Local food blogger and podcaster Jenée Libby expressed outrage online and garnered universal support.

“I posted the link on Facebook with the subject ‘WHERE ARE THE WOMEN?’ and I got such a huge response. I didn’t know Phyllis and Gail had met that weekend to discuss forming this group, but those things were the impetus behind this.”

Hunter says their first potluck meeting of 26 women in the galleria of the Main Street Market, where her shop is located, was just to get to know one another. And when those in attendance put out the word to their peers, the membership quickly climbed to nearly 300 women. “Obviously there was a need for this,” Hunter says. “When women come to the meetings, the feeling of community is just so fantastic, so supportive, people are very open. I’m astounded at these women.”

But she says it’s important to recognize that the organization is pro-female, not anti-men.

“The first time, I thought, ‘Oh God, what am I doing? We don’t want this to be a bitch session of women complaining about men!’

But there wasn’t a word mentioned about a male at the meeting. This is a group that

in restaurant kitchens for more than 30 years, says while she’s grateful not to have encountered sexual harassment on the job, there are other issues that rear their ugly head.

“More than anything I had to work a little harder to get the same respect you get from male counterparts. And I was always pegged as the pastry chef, no matter what I was working,” she says. She adds that moving into management in the kitchen and overseeing men beneath her in the pecking order was made all the harder because she was a woman.

Respect in the front of the house can be an even bigger issue at times, says Clare Terni, an anthropologist who’s worked for 15 years in food, including catering and frontof-house at downtown restaurants. She says women will share information sotto voce when they know about certain men in a restaurant who are to be avoided at all costs.

“There are plenty of men who don’t suffer consequences for their actions. At the same time, we know. When you ask a friend about working for a particular person, odds are good they know someone who’s worked with that person, and you can sometimes get a bead on what you’re getting yourself into. There are jobs I have not taken because I’ve learned how women are treated in the organization. It’s demoralizing to feel that you need to check this stuff out before you accept a job.”

She emphasizes that there are plenty of good folks working behind the scenes, too.

Her male co-workers provide a kind of sibling camaraderie, even going so far as to defend her against a grabby colleague.

“There is something much more subtle that I see in the industry, though,” Terni says.

“If you watch meetings between managers, you often see the women in the group talked over or ignored. I see women put into management positions and then openly mocked by their male superiors: ‘Oh, she put up checklists? What? Is she on the rag again?’”

In order to fit in to a management culture, Terni has noticed, a person may need to tolerate sexist, racist, or homophobic jokes.

“I worked with a man who told me jokes

which, at its core, proved that providing camaraderie and educational support is vital.

“It was driven by a duel purpose to have a positive place for rage and also to provide something for other young women that we didn’t have,” she says.

“We’re already in a restaurant community that is not supportive financially. It’s hard for women to get capital, it’s hard for women chefs to get loans, it’s hard to present investment ideas because most of the people doling out the money are men,” says Hobbs-Page. “That is something that is just the way it is here. If you look around at some of the satellite businesses that come out of our community—they’re all run by men.”

She adds that things are even more complicated for women of color, who are not well-represented in the food community here.

She says she hopes the CWIF can play a strong part in empowering women professionals. “The restaurant atmosphere can be very bawdy: it’s stressful, you’re hot, you’re dealing with food and people. I get it—it can be randy, so to speak. But there’s a difference whether that person crosses a line. And I’d hate for anybody’s daughter to have her passions squelched because some man can’t control his urges.”

R-E-S-P-E-C-T

Doing it for themselves Kathryn Matthews, who’s worked in the food and hospitality industry for over 10 years, opened Iron Paffles & Coffee, a specialty waffle restaurant, a year and a half ago.

You’d think that since she owns the place, she wouldn’t have to deal with sexism in the kitchen, but she says she’s struggled with a disrespectful chef who yelled at her in front of her team, would disappear without notice, and refused to accept constructive criticism.

Paradox Pastry owner Jenny Peterson says it’s the responsibility of the next generation to “raise their sons a little more enlightened.”

She’s had employees show up late or not 23 at all and then tell her to “relax.” Another male chef left after she disagreed with him.

She says she’s had a supplier stop by with a thank-you card for the owner or “whoever else is in charge,” and assume that person was a man. This is an experience most of these women have cited happens regularly.

Paradox Pastry owner Jenny Peterson says that some of the discrimination can be insidious. “We have preconceived notions of a woman in a restaurant as hostess or waitress.

The chef is the man,” she says. “When I opened, I had an 18-year old boy working for me and religiously, vendors and salespeople bee-lined for the male in the place and started talking to him about business. I have this hope that it should not be a ‘them against us’ situation, because it’s not. I think we come together, we figure out how to move forward and do it with gratitude and vision and a welcoming of whomever happens to help us.”

She points out that change can start from within.

“It’s up to newer generations to raise their sons a little more enlightened. That said, you have a big lump of men who have that mindset. So how do we handle that? That comes back to the support we get from other women.”

Local farmer Erica Hellen, co-owner of Free Union Grass Farm with Joel Slezak, says her experience has been an almost cultural shunning while working in the hinterlands of Albemarle County. Their farm, a holistic livestock operation, is home to a host of hormone- and antibiotic-free free-range chickens, ducks, grass-fed cows, and pigs.

“Because of the nature of farming that we do and how different it is from traditional agriculture, people already have a chip on their shoulder. And then I come in and have a nose ring and it’s very different from a lot of the country women, so I find I don’t get a whole lot of respect. It’s like, I work really hard for a living outside in the fields just like you do, but I’m excluded from that kinship because of that?”

“It was apparent from day one that there was a difference in how men and women were treated in a kitchen. Which honestly seems hilarious when you think about it— men always joke about how a woman’s place is in the kitchen. I suppose that is until they hold some sort of authority and power above them,” Fonner says. “I’m not saying all men have a problem with a woman being higher up in the food chain, but I have witnessed quite a few times where no matter what you do or say, you still get zero respect.”

She says she’s grateful to have landed at Duner’s 15 years ago, where she has a level of respect she’s earned from all of the men she works with.

“I guess my description of the kitchen being a tough environment is that it is a grueling job. It is hot, it is dangerous and most of the time very thankless. I stand in front of a hot oven and line of equipment for 14 hours, covered in sweat, smelling like whatever I’m cooking. It is most definitely not a fashion show. I cut the sleeves off of my old T-shirts and wear those to work since it’s so hot I can’t handle a chef ’s jacket. That just opens the door for physical criticism and sexual comments. If you are lucky, your co-workers respect you enough to not say anything.”

Fonner took a hiatus from the kitchen when her younger two kids were born, instead working as a bartender when she was still breastfeeding the youngest. She recalls with disgust a regular customer who ordered a martini just to watch her make it.

“I could feel him watching me shake his drink. Watching my breasts. He tipped me $80 and told me he liked the way I shook his drink. In hindsight I should have thrown his drink in his face, but I politely said thank you and went about the rest of my night, with my dirty money. It made me feel awful, but there are lots of moments where you have to choose to fight or to keep quiet and just serve your customers.

Close-Hart, who’s been nominated for James Beard awards four times and has been

about raping babies for a solid week, and then told me he figured I was ‘all right’ because I hadn’t quit over it.”

She says she’s particularly grateful for the CWIF. “It’s a place to ask questions and get help from people who will treat you like a peer worthy of respect. And it’s a group of folks who remind me that I don’t have to change who I am or what I think is right in order to make my way in this industry.”

“It was too many layers, and I wanted to keep my quality. I would’ve had to compromise too much,” she says. So she redirected her efforts toward retail, first teaming up with fellow foodie Kathy Zentgraf for a while in a small carryout window on Second Street, and now having expanded into the café at the Jefferson School.

“The only way I’ve kept it going this far is partnering and sharing with people,” she says. “The rent is way too much in this town, with one place on the Downtown Mall costing $3,500 a month plus utilities.

I just refused to borrow money in this business. I feel like my vegan stuff is awesome but I’m just gonna take my time and wait and do my best and see what happens. I’ve worked this business long enough that I know I’m ready.”

Julie Vu Whitaker, who calls herself Vu Noodles’ owner/chef/dishwasher, shares kitchen space with two men. She says it’s been a positive experience because they are kind and respectful, and she enjoys collaborating with them.

Caromont Farm owner Gail Hobbs-Page saw a clear need for women to unite for a common cause, and says Charlottesville Women in Food was “driven by a duel purpose to have a positive place for rage, and also to provide something for other young women that we didn’t have.”

so that can be intimidating to women when they’re first entering that space and even over time just adjusting to that culture,” she says. “That said, there seem to be more women going into the food industry so it’s shifting a bit. For women business owners overall, there are going to constantly be challenges, because there are always going to be people who doubt that or don’t support that. Charlottesville is set in some older ways and that can be challenging for women entering into entrepreneurship.”

She says that with the majority of their clients being women, rallying for support is always happening. And the added bonus is that women entrepreneurs beget more women entrepreneurs.

“Now their children or their aunts or their best friends want to start a business.

Particularly for women, it provides an example for them to look up and be inspired,” Davis says.

For CWIF, even the online Facebook group provides a go-to source to get help or have questions answered. From those seeking to share commercial kitchen space, to others needing insurance advice, or even unrelated discussions about families such as caring for aging parents while working fulltime, there are new discussions posted daily in which members find solidarity. The

support that CWIF provides has proven to be quite powerful, says food blogger Libby.

“I think some of the change with this is that women can feel freer to talk about things. They share amongst one another— that’s really healthy and it has brought a lot of women together that thought they were the only one,” she says. “I see their faces when they come to the meetings because they’re super afraid and don’t know what to expect and when they leave they can’t wait for the next meeting, because the energy is so great.”

With this solidarity comes power and with that power comes gradual change.

Fonner’s banking on it, with her daughter planning to start working in the kitchen next year when she turns 16. And Terni is encouraged that change is coming, too, albeit slowly.

“From talking to other people, yes, things have definitely improved,” Terni says. “My own work was spread out over so many different settings that it would be hard for me to point to specific examples of improvement.

But I also see more female owners, more female managers, and more women in executive and leadership positions. That suggests to me that, indeed, things are changing and my hope is that women-led businesses will help drive change as both men and women realize that harassment and discrimination is not just ‘part of the deal’ in the industry.”

There is help for women out there, not only with the collegial support that CWIF provides—which also includes the counsel of guest speakers such as lawyers who coach women on their rights in the workplace, or financial experts who speak about microloans—but also through other organizations like the Charlottesville Community Investment Collaborative (CIC).

Waverly Davis, CIC communications and engagement director, says the organization strengthens the community and contributes to economic development by fueling the success of under-resourced entrepreneurs through education, mentoring, micro-lending, and networking. Davis oversees a 16week entrepreneur workshop, which often includes many female food entrepreneurs.

“Particularly in the restaurant world it can often be a pretty male-dominated space,

It’s a hard pill to swallow for a woman who works alongside her partner moving large quantities of meat, some of which weigh more than she does.

“Most of the heavy lifting we do these days involves loading or unloading meat from the butcher, or in and out of coolers for market or deliveries. Schlepping meat is seriously heavy work! I frequently think about how I weigh almost 100 pounds less than Joel, but I still lift the same heavy things. As a woman that makes my workout proportionally that much harder.”

And while she keeps up just fine, she says there are work-related tasks she’ll often leave to Slezak simply because he’s better-received as a man. “If we need to get work done on a car or we need to get hay and deal with a farm manager who’s been doing it for the last 30 years, I often send Joel,” she says. “It would be nice to feel like my opinion and experience were valued in those environments. But mostly I’ve surrounded myself with really good people and I don’t come up with those situations very often.”

For Myriam Hernandez, who owns Al Carbon with her husband Claudio, the greatest struggle was finding a space to lease for the restaurant they’d dreamed of, where they could serve the authentic Mexican cuisine of their upbringing on the far outskirts of Mexico City. As a Spanish teacher, she recognized that one way to encourage learning was through the stomach, which impelled her to want to open the restaurant.

“I wanted to share my culture and I was teaching Spanish and I realized how the students got engaged hearing about the food and culture, not just the words—I realized how big the impact the food had on us,” she says. “But when we were trying to find a place to lease we struggled a lot; we were rejected from every shopping center we approached. Many of them didn’t believe in us, so we were never offered a space.”

Growing a small food-related business is often a struggle for women, because financing is hard to come by, and space even more so.

Julie Vu Whitaker, “owner/chef/dishwasher” of Vu Noodles, opted to share kitchen space with chef Javier Figueroa-Ray and Sober Pierre, who run the popular Pearl Island Catering. For her this has been a great experience, because she enjoys working with others, and the men are kind and respectful.

She said as a relative newbie, she’s thrilled to get their input as well.

Vu started her business because she could not find grab-and-go ethnic food, so she started making and selling it wholesale. She had her home kitchen certified and started wholesaling around her kids’ schedules.

After getting her product placed at Martha Jefferson Hospital, the CFA Institute, Health South, and Whole Foods Market, she looked into financing to expand and send her products to the Whole Foods in Northern Virginia and Richmond. But gearing up meant changing recipes and considerable financial support.

The Jellyman’s Daughter has gone from busking in the streets of Edinburgh eight years ago to making an album in 2018 that BBC Radio’s Ricky Ross calls “One of my favourite records of the year.” Known for soulful harmonies accompanied by cello, guitar, and mandolin, the duo’s music transcends go-to folk and bluegrass to become exceptional acoustic rock. $10-12, 7:30pm. Though the path of bluegrass and folk-rock is well-worn, it gained new life in 2004 when Trampled by Turtles made slow but steady progress to the inner circle of indie rock. Since then, the Duluth, Minnesota, band turned out one fast-pickin’ chart climber after another, and played in all 50 states and around the globe, until Dave Simonett became the first to say “uncle” and step away from full-time touring to seek creative space.

After a two-year hiatus, the band returns with an ironically titled new album, Life Is Good on the Open Road, and offers the same barn-burner live shows that blazed the group’s trail in the beginning. $25-28, 8pm.

The Charlottesville Chamber Music Festival explores Asian influences

T

hough beloved by some, chamber music enjoyed its heyday in the 18th century but is less popular today, with the average person possibly knowing little about the classical style beyond its name.

Tim Summers has devoted his career to changing that. Co-founding the Charlottesville Chamber Music Festival in 2000 alongside Raphael Bell, (when they were both young musicians fresh out of Juilliard), Summers now has nearly two decades of experience under his belt—and that’s crucial to the innovative concepts of 2018’s program.

“While there is never really a theme to the festival, there is always a trajectory,” says Summers. 2018’s trajectory? Asian influences on chamber music. Many attribute solely European influences to the genre, but Summers wants to highlight Eastern contributions to “present some of the contacts that classical music has made with Asia over the past century.”

Summers first became aware of these contacts when he realized how often he was traveling to Asian cities and countries to play music—Beijing, Shanghai, Tokyo, and Hong Kong. On one trip, he met with Keith Lipson, a clarinet player for the Beijing Symphony Orchestra and one of the performers in this year’s festival. “His wife is a pipa player...and he was learning traditional [Asian] instruments,” Summers says. “There was an element of exchange which was not merely casual.”

Last October’s meeting with Lipson inspired Summers to pursue what he dubs the “European/Asian/American exchange.” He spent the ensuing months studying the intersection of chamber music from all three cultures and the media in which it ap-

peared—including world-famous movies with Asian roots like Akira Kurosawa’s Ran and Ang Lee’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Japanese legend Toru Takemitsu and the more contemporary Chinese composer Tan Dun created music for the respective films, and works from both musicians will be featured in the festival, alongside European selections from household-name composers like Bach and Brahms.

Summers attributes big themes to the pieces, describing the music as being about “harmony, voice and nature, and materials and structure.” Though tying together three separate world forces, he wants the experience to transcend geography. “Towards the end of the festival, the idea of location disappears somewhat,” he says.

Location may vanish, but confusion about certain terminology may persist. Lipson’s wife’s pipa, for example. Though it’s an instrument central to Chinese music and has been for centuries, it’s unlikely to appear in a Western ensemble. As one of its masters, Lin Ma is among the most qualified people alive to talk about the pipa—and she also happens to be one of the festival’s featured musicians.

Ma, who grew up in China, has multiple names for her instrument of choice, including “Chinese lute” and “king of the plucked string,” describing it as a “half-pear-shaped instrument” with four strings. Her love affair with the pipa began when she was just three-and-a-half years old, and although she

was dwarfed by the instrument’s size, she began playing the pipa as soon as she was physically able, practicing “six to eight hours a day,” even as a child. “I didn’t have time to play with other children, because I had to practice my instrument,” Ma says.

The enormous amount of practice paid off when Ma attended the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, the “top music school in China,” and got her master’s in pipa performing. It was a formative time, she says, not in the least because she studied under pipa master Guanghua Li. “He gave me more space to form my individual performing style, which is essential to my playing,” Ma says.

by Tan Dun. “It’s called Ghost Opera,” Ma says, adding that it evokes “water, stone, paper, and metal” imagery. “This is a very interesting and creative piece, not like the traditional music style of the pipa.”

Summers explains that the decision to bring Ma onboard, like many decisions made for this year’s festival, resulted from that first meeting with Lipson in Beijing.

The original plan was to bring Lipson and his wife, but due to visa issues, it became clear that both could not attend. Lipson’s wife recommended Ma, who was already in New York at the time. “She is a wonderful musician, and we look forward to working with her,” says Summers.

The festival, among other things, is a way to see “what we can find between us,” says Summers. He expects the cultural exchange to be a valuable one. “I think the idea was not to give the impression that we had something to teach about Asia,” Summers says. “Only something to present and explore.”

he capture and trial of Adolf Eichmann, the Nazi war criminal often referred to as the architect of the Final Solution, was a massive victory not only for the victims and survivors of the Holocaust, but for the notion that the serving of justice was far from complete after Nuremberg. No matter how much time has passed or where they have fled to, the perpetrators of modern history’s greatest crime should answer for their actions. But, before Eichmann could be put on trial, he had to be brought out of hiding in a daring, highstakes covert operation where the slightest error could endanger all similar efforts to bring Nazis to justice.

In telling this story, Operation Finale should have channeled the natural tension that occurs when a team of Mossad agents must remain focused on the mission despite their deep personal connection to Eichmann’s crimes. Instead, what we get is a paint-by-numbers thriller that defuses intrigue with artificial ticking clocks, manufactured dilemmas, and pat coincidences that dilute an otherwise important story.

Oscar Isaac stars as Peter Malkin, the Israeli agent tasked with abducting Eichmann (Ben Kingsley) once his location is confirmed in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Eichmann, it seems, assumed the name Ricardo Klement while working at a Mercedes-Benz

factory, living among the German expatriate community under the protection of a friendly administration. Malkin’s role is to physically subdue Eichmann on his way home from work, then pull him into a car where he will be drugged and taken to a safe house.

From there, he is to be interrogated and flown back to Israel to face trial, all without raising local suspicion as the operation is a violation of Argentine sovereignty.

Even the best mission conducted by the finest agents faces obstacles and unforeseen complications, and this team sees its share: the loss of Eichmann’s glasses at the scene of his abduction, a manhunt led by Eichmann’s fully Nazified son, a disloyal delivery girl from the local Jewish population, and El Al Airline’s reluctance to openly participate in the operation, resulting in 10 unplanned days spent avoiding attention. Even when the events depicted actually happened, they are bent to conform to conventional thriller tropes instead of explored on their own terms.

In a movie like this, where you already know the outcome, the viewers still need to feel like the agents might not pull it off to properly engage with the subject matter.

Director Chris Weitz prefers to blatantly foreshadow instead of quietly letting emotions boil over, as though he made a checklist and altered it to fit the facts of the case.

That’s not how to build audience engagement; we need to sympathize with the heroes in not knowing if the next move would

be the one that saves the day or totally blows the operation. It’s a much more rewarding experience to put yourself in the shoes of someone who must act decisively but tread lightly, than to watch scenarios you’ve seen a million times but this time they are more or less factual. It cheapens the historical value and deadens the artistic merit.

Operation Finale does succeed in it’s fine performances, chiefly by Isaac and Kingsley, but also the strong supporting cast (Lior Raz, Mélanie Laurent, Nick Kroll, and briefly Greta Scacchi). Isaac gives Malkin’s sense of humor a defensive touch, as though it is the sole attribute keeping his damaged psyche together. Kingsley’s Eichmann is the embodiment of Hannah Arendt’s description, the “banality of evil,” an almost feeble man who defends his role in the Holocaust as a procedural one. Malkin’s decision to play into Eichmann’s ego rather than his instinct for self-preservation can be a fascinating one to watch, and perhaps should have been the main focus of the film.

Educating the world on how too many Nazis escaped justice is a worthwhile pursuit, as is depicting the pursuit of justice as difficult and morally muddled. But despite good intentions and a few admirable qualities, Operation Finale is not up to the task.

Tim O’Kane has made a career as a figurative painter, an artist capturing people napping on couches, teacups sitting on countertops, and bowls brimming with eggplants, all in a hyperrealistic style.

But viewers of “One Intention in a Troubled World,” O’Kane’s September show at Chroma Projects will see a different facet of the artist’s work. The series features objects wrapped in paper and sitting in boxes, variously concealed and revealed; it explores in O’Kane’s signature style the abstract subject matter of dreams and dreaming.

O’Kane says the series developed intuitively between 2008 and now, and while it’s hard for him to discern exactly when he had the idea, he says it could have started in New York, with the purchase of an assortment of objects in a Chinese store. O’Kane noticed how the cashier carefully wrapped each individual object in newspaper covered in Chinese characters that reminded him of the lines on some stones he found in Sicily.

Back in his studio, he arranged objects in paper (some is printed with Japanese translations of his own poetry) and in boxes. He says that as the series of enigmatic still lifes progressed over the decade, the concept became more abstracted, more surreal, an exercise in discerning “significant meaning that’s outside the idea of figurative work.”

In “Night Yields,” a box floats above a sheet of creased, dark blue paper that’s been folded and unfolded, like the night.

The box, which O’Kane calls “a tangle of things” presents to the viewer a mystery: What’s inside? But, because the box is a painting, there’s no way to open it.

For O’Kane, wondering what’s inside the box is a mystery akin to waking up knowing that you’ve dreamed. Perhaps parts of the dream linger and you try to make sense of it as it sticks with you throughout the day, in good ways or in bad. The dream is both real and not real, it means something and yet nothing at all. It’s a significance that, even when we think we can see it clearly, we can “Night Yields” never truly possess.—Erin O’Hare

Once their newly planted vineyard becomes established, Jonathan Baird and Mariana Bell plan to make wine under their own label at Keswick’s Beacon Tree Vineyard.

A newly planted vineyard is not a pretty site; it’s certainly not the bucolic wedding backdrop you might imagine. Baby grape vines look like thick twigs sticking up from the ground, gnarly little things rising up from mounds of clumped topsoil. Soon after planting a new vineyard, the landscape is temporarily interrupted as each vine is enshrouded with a ‘grow tube’ to protect it through the early months as the roots stretch deeper toward the Manteo. But despite the early aesthetics, the Beacon Tree site has some sort of indescribable X-factor going for it. When you step onto the vineyard, there is a palpable sacredness to the place. You get the same feeling when you first put your feet on a site like Corton in Burgundy, Falling Man in New York, or Bloom’s Field in Santa Barbara—you know instinctively that, no matter what, special wine will come from here.

LIVING ALL YOU CAN EAT One hot New England summer day long ago, my dad took my brother and me to a fair, not far from the ocean, complete with skee-ball games, bumper cars and, of course, fried dough and seafood stands as far as the eye could see. When the sun went down and a breeze started to come in off the water, we sat under a party tent to eat from red and white food trays full of French fries, chicken nuggets, and lobster rolls.

As the people at the picnic table next to ours slurped steamed littleneck clams from the shell, my dad asserted, “Can you imagine the poor bastard who was so hungry he decided to eat one of those?”

“Ewww!” my brother and I cried, our noses wrinkling at the thought of a cold, slimy clam sliding down the backs of our throats.

But you’d be hard-pressed to feel sorry for anyone who had a plate of fried seafood in front of them—fried

clams, fried oysters, fish ‘n’ chips, calamari, the smooth, briny flesh ensconced in a hot, seasoned crust. Mmm. Charlottesville may be a few hours from the coast, but that doesn’t stop some local restaurants from going out of their way to secure delicious seafood to serve here in the mountains, bringing the spirit of shore summers in New England, the mid-Atlantic and even the Gulf Coast to our tables.—Erin O’Hare CONTINUED ON PAGE 55

With seven acres dedicated to the vineyard, four are planted with cabernet franc, one is planted with chardonnay; the remaining two will likely become chenin blanc. Chenin blanc?

“In my brain, if franc does well, we should be able to do chenin as a Loire-like counterpart,” says Baird. “Cabernet franc and chenin blanc grow together in France’s Loire Valley, and though Virginia has imported and committed to the cabernet franc part of the equation, there is almost no local chenin blanc.”

Poking around through Bell and Baird’s wine cellar, you’ll discover the dedication to chenin blanc, chardonnay, and cabernet franc is a pretty serious thing. They have the benchmark bottlings from around the world, and plan to have their fruit stand up next to the best. They’ll experiment with the first 2019 harvest, then sell grapes to Jake Busching beginning with the 2020 vintage.

n the spirit of a barn-raising, friends from around the country gathered to help at a vineyard planting party. It was April of this year, and the crowd came armed with s’mores, guitars, babies, potato salad, and sunscreen. Once tents were pitched in a neighboring field, I trekked through a patch of woods to get to the planting site. This was also high morel season, and in the forest my eyes routinely scanned for mushroom treasure (none found), but as the ground transformed from a dry leafy carpet to a verdant sun-splashed lawn, I looked up. We had arrived at Beacon Tree Vineyard. Perched at the crest of a series of gently sloping hills, to the left, the vineyard disappeared into the same forest from which we had just emerged.

Underfoot, silty loam laid a solid foundation for something special. In geologyspeak, this kind of semi-permeable and well-draining soil is called Manteo. Once used primarily for corn and hay production in Virginia, Manteo soils have proven to be superior sites for cabernet franc. As with other regional farms, the Beacon Tree vineyard land has a history of hay production and in the early 1900s, was a dairy farm.

Local musician Mariana Bell grew up on this farm, and when her family purchased it in the late 20th century, it functioned as “a working horse farm and steeplechase breeding operation in addition to cattle production,” says Bell.

She has fond memories of the old cedar tree that “stands in the middle of the field as a beacon,” says Jonathan Baird, Bell’s husband, as he explains the significance of the vineyard’s namesake tree.

Though this is the first time they’ve planted a vineyard, Baird comes from a solid wine background in retail and restaurants. With Bell’s close ties to this land, and Baird’s love

of all things wine, the Beacon Tree vineyard, seems destined. But getting to this point was anything but a clear-cut journey.

Baird studied art history at UVA and cooked at local Charlottesville restaurants before moving to Los Angeles and diving deep into wine at Greenblatt’s Deli-Restaurant & Fine Wine Shop, a historic restaurant and retail shop in Hollywood. After three years at Greenblatt’s, he joined the sommelier team at Hatfield’s, a now-closed restaurant in L.A. known for its unique wine program. Baird worked for sommelier Peter Birmingham before taking the helm of the wine program in 2011. During his four year tenure at Hatfield’s, the program ranked as a semi-finalist for the James Beard Best Wine Program award, and Wine Enthusiast featured the establishment as one of America’s 100 Best Wine Restaurants.

Baird describes his approach to wine list creation as “familiar yet different. Many of the wines were obscure, but I’d make sure you’d get what you wanted flavor-wise.” His first foray into agriculture on Keswick land follows a similar ethos. In addition to the newly planted Beacon Tree Vineyard (which will not produce commercial fruit until at least 2020), there’s an organic garden of diversified crops that echoes the description “familiar yet different”: heirloom tomatoes the size of golf balls that glow half green and half purple, watermelons with pale snowy flesh, okra that bleeds the color of a fire engine, and fist-sized yellow squashes the shape of acorns and concentrated with earthy flavor.

When Baird and Bell decided to plant a vineyard, Baird signed up for viticulture classes with Jake Busching at PVCC, and took a crash course in practical grape farming. Acclaimed local vineyard consultant Chris Hill stopped by the site as well, and “talked me out of growing syrah,” says Baird with a smile. After digging soil pits with geologist Ernest “Bubba” Beasley, they came up with a plan.

Keaveny keeps the oil hot because a higher oil temperature means a faster fry, which usually results in a crispier crust and a less soggy clam.

“We don’t make a dime off them because we eat most of them,” Keaveny says, laughing. “It’s about me being able to indulge myself, my staff, our customers.”

This small New Orleans-infused eatery located on the first floor of a house on Hinton Avenue in Belmont has quite a bit of seafood on its menu, from eggs Chesapeake to gumbo and no fewer than four po’boy sandwich options, all stuffed with seafood.

For its fried shrimp po’boy, Southern Crescent uses wild-caught shrimp from either the Gulf or Carolina Coast, breading and dropping it into 100 percent peanut oil for a clean fry. The sandwich comes fully dressed, with sliced heirloom tomatoes and remoulade, plus a side of housemade purple potato chips.

All of Southern Crescent’s po’boys are served on Leidenheimer Baking Company’s New Orleans French bread, a key ingredient for an authentic po’boy. Southern Crescent co-owner Lucinda Ewell says that after Hurricane Katrina put much of New Orleans under water in 2005, no true New Orleans restaurant would make and serve a po’boy until Leidenheimer Bakery was back up and running.

Fried clams aren’t a regular offering at Italian eatery Tavola, but when they’re on the menu, they go fast, gobbled up just a day or two after arriving, fresh, at the restaurant.

As with any fried seafood dish, “The most important thing is the ingredient itself,” says Tavola co-owner and chef Michael Keaveny, which is why he gets clams from Ipswich, Massachusetts, where the fried clam originated, according to New England lore. A high-quality, briny clam is flavorful on its own, which is why Keaveny uses a simple but classic breading technique and frying method that involves

This seafood restaurant and raw bar offers oysters many ways: raw, roasted and wrapped in bacon, broiled oysters Rockefeller, in ceviche, and fried, the most popular option.

The fried oysters are the only appetizer more popular than French fries, and it’s easy to see why: Raw oysters are dipped in buttermilk, then breaded in seasoned cornmeal rather than flour (keepin’ it glutenfree) before they’re fried and served hot with a vermouth aioli and pickled red onion for some bite. Public brings in oysters from all over— coastal Virginia, the Chesapeake Bay, New England, and elsewhere—and uses whatever’s most abundantly available for the fried bivalves, which tend to lose their flavor fried in a seasoned breading.
