As unemployment reaches staggering levels, those of us who still have full-time jobs right now are the lucky ones. But for parents, especially folks with younger children, the fact that work has not stopped even though everything else has (including schools and childcare) poses its own problems.

This week, we talked with parents who are scrambling to educate and care for their kids while also holding down full-time jobs (p. 9). Their coping methods range from squeezing in work between bedtime and midnight to calling in grandparents (and potentially putting them at risk).

‘Plants to Go’

“Pandemics expose and exacerbate the existing dynamics of society—good and bad,” writes Chloe Cooney, in a recent piece called “Parents are not O.K.” “One of those dynamics is the burden we put on individual parents and families. We ask individuals to solve for problems that are systemic.”

Pre-pandemic, that meant every new parent had to figure out, as if from scratch, how to manage jobs that assume workers are available 24/7 with childcare options that are inflexible, mind-bogglingly expensive, unreliable, or all of the above.

Now, the struggle to balance work and family obligations is simply more stark. It’s impossible, but we’ve collectively decided to pretend it can be done.

As the virus has highlighted our existing inequalities (p. 7), some are hoping that it will also prompt sweeping changes afterwards, from paid sick leave for low-wage workers to a better health care system for all. Perhaps, too, the collective experience of having all of our children at home will inspire more respect (and better compensation) for teachers and caregivers, and policies that make it easier to have a career and a family.

With schools in Virginia closed until at least next fall, there’s plenty of time to dream.—Laura Longhine

Gradual grads UVA announced two tentative dates for graduation, after the original ceremony was canceled due to coronavirus. The class of 2020 will walk the Lawn on October 9-11, or, failing that, May 28-30, the weekend after the class of 2021 graduates. The university will still hold a digital ceremony to confer degrees this May, although it’s unclear if Zoom will have installed a virtual cap-flinging feature by then.

Legislators in the state capital won’t be able to meet in their regular chambers for this month’s short veto session. Instead, Democratic leadership reports that the Senate will gather in a convention center, with members seated at desks 10 feet apart from each other, and the House will convene in a huge tent on the lawn near the capital.

While the COVID-19 pandemic has affected people of all backgrounds across the globe, statistics show that it has had a disproportionate impact on black Americans. Data is limited, because only about 35 percent of U.S. cases specify a patient’s race, according to the CDC. But its numbers show that black people comprise nearly 34 percent of those infected with COVID-19, though they make up only 13 percent of the population. And African Americans make up nearly 30 percent of U.S. deaths from the virus, according to the latest Associated Press analysis.

Charlottesville is certainly not immune to this issue. In the Thomas Jefferson Health District, as of April 17, about 32 percent of people infected with coronavirus (and 25 percent of those who’ve died) are black, while black people make up only 13.9 percent of the district’s population.

Black communities in other parts of the state have been hit even harder by COVID-19. In Richmond, all eight people who’ve died from the virus were black. And while 48 percent of the city’s population is African American, black people make up about 62 percent of local cases.

Medical professionals, activists, and political leaders around the country have attributed these disparities to pre-existing inequities within our health care and economic systems. Blacks

are more likely than whites to be uninsured and receive lowerquality health care, as well as have underlying conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, asthma, and heart disease—all often caused or worsened by poverty. And due to unequal education, housing segregation, and other systemic inequalities, a significant portion of black Americans live in densely packed areas and do not have jobs that allow them to work from home, making social distancing more difficult.

To provide more black Virginians with adequate health care access, the Albemarle-Charlottesville NAACP has sent a letter to Governor Ralph Northam asking him to use his “executive discretion” to speed up the Medicaid eligibility process using data available immediately from the Department of Taxation, along with other resources. Because there is currently a backlog of applications, those trying to be approved for Medicaid may have to wait as long as 45 days—which, for some people, “may be a death sentence.”

Death penalty critic Jerry Givens died last Monday in Henrico County at age 67. His son, Terence Travers, did not reveal Givens’ cause of death, but said that he had pneumonia and had tested positive for COVID-19.

Givens, who spoke with C-VILLE in February for a story about the fight against the death penalty in Virginia, served as the state’s chief executioner for 17 years, before becoming an outspoken opponent of capital punishment.

Seventy-eight percent of Virginia’s restaurant employees have been laid off since February, according to a new study from the National Restaurant Association. In the first week of April, the state’s restaurant sales declined 77 percent, compared to the same time period last year. Working parents adjust to life without childcare

Only 18 of the 55 licensed childcare centers and preschools in Charlottesville and Albemarle County are currently open, which means many local parents are struggling to balance working at home while caring for their kids.

that “there are other people who are in much tougher situations.”

Some are relying on other family members to fill the gap. As essential workers, local E.R. nurse Kellen Squire and his wife—also an E.R. nurse—aren’t able to stay home full-time with their children, who are 3, 6, and 12. Fortunately, Squire’s parents have moved in to help out, but the changes his family has had to make have been “tough emotionally,” he says.

When they’re able to spend time with their children, Squire and his wife try to do social distancing activities, such as playing outside or watching movies, in order to ensure that they don’t pass the virus on to their kids, or to Squire’s parents.

“I know personally about a half a dozen colleagues from around the state, health care workers, that have gotten infected, so it’s not a theoretical risk,” he says. “And I haven’t seen anybody anywhere truly recover from it...we’re terrified we’ll bring that home.”

With parents like Squire on the frontline every day, sacrificing their health and safety, Burke is grateful to be at home with her family, regardless of its challenges.

“We are all having such a hard time, and it’s really easy to think that the day-to-day [life] that we’re leading is just the hardest thing we could possibly imagine…[but] we’re also really so lucky to have the opportunity to stay home,” she says. “It’s a tough balance between acknowledging how hard it is...but it’s also important to keep the bigger picture in mind.”

window of time I can do the work has radically decreased,” says Buckelew, who currently teaches three courses (remotely) at the university. “[My husband and I], we switch off. Our morning starts, and one parent is with the kids, while the other one is working...we’re just switching off throughout the day so that someone can be working, getting meals ready, or doing the new work we have of trying to figure out how we get our groceries.”

“Most nights my husband and I clock in when the kids go to sleep around 7:30, 8 o’clock, and we’re working until midnight,” she adds. “At first, I was running on adrenaline, and so I was actually doing kind of okay, and I think I caught a rhythm. But now I’m just really struggling, [and] worn down.”

When she is not recording lectures, meeting with students over Zoom, or fulfilling her many other duties, Buckelew tries to do activities with her children that aren’t “super complicated,” such as worm walks, science experiments, and dance parties, in addition to any Zoom storytimes or other remote programming her daughter’s preschool, Mountaintop Montessori, puts on. Once spring semester ends, she hopes to “build in more learning experiences,” she says. However, her main focus has been “on keeping the kids happy...not putting a bunch of demands on them.”

Despite the challenges of full-time parenting, Buckelew recognizes she and her husband “are in a really good position,” and

or the first few weeks after her kids’ daycare shut down, Sarah Burke found herself in survival mode, scrambling to figure out how to manage her full-time career while keeping her children (ages 2 and 3) busy at home.

“For a while, we felt like this was a shortterm problem, and therefore would have a short-term solution, which was just trying our best to get through it,” she says. But eventually, “we [realized] we’re in this for the long-haul. We [had] to actually create systems that work for us.”

Burke, who owns a capital mitigation and criminal defense investigation firm, and her husband, who also works from home fulltime as a data science engineer, now switch off every few hours, one handling the kids while the other works at the makeshift desk they’ve created in their bedroom. Her children’s daycare, Westminster Child Care Center, has provided some online programming for its students, such as a weekly Show and Share over Zoom, she says. But for the most part, she and her husband have been “doing the best they can” when coming up with activities for their kids, from making crafts to teaching them about household tasks like gardening and recycling.

“We’re [still] trying to figure out how to manage the fact that my small business needs to continue...and he is supposed to be getting 40 hours of work per week. And there’s just not enough hours in the day to make it all happen,” she says. So “we’re trying to give ourselves a little bit of grace.”

Burke is one of many local working parents who has been without childcare, courtesy of the coronavirus. According to Gail Esterman, director of early learning at ReadyKids, only 18 of the 55 licensed childcare centers and preschools in Charlottesville and Albemarle County are currently open, along with 20 out of 34 licensed in-home childcare programs. And because of social distancing requirements, they have had to reduce the number of children they serve, giving priority to kids of essential workers.

While the UVA Child Development Center remains open, sociology professor Rose Buckelew decided to pull her 5-year-old son out due to safety concerns. She and her husband are now doing their best to meet the needs of their son and 3-year-old daughter, whose full-day preschool is completely closed, while working full-time from home.

“My work has increased. This is normally a really busy part of the semester, so I’m usually clocking in a lot of hours. And the

The City of Charlottesville was almost all the way through the always-laborious yearly budget process when the coronavirus crisis derailed its plans. City Council held an online meeting Monday night— its first meeting in a month—to discuss the city’s deeply uncertain finances.

The most recent projections, delivered by City Manager Tarron Richardson, suggest $8.5 million of lost revenue as a result of the crisis. That means that many of the new, exciting programs the council had planned are now in jeopardy. The creation of a Director of Equity and Inclusion position and the Unity Days programming, two appropriations that community activists had fought for in the wake of Unite the Right, will be deferred.

The pre-coronavirus proposed 2021 budget had given $2.1 million more than last year to the schools, but that increase won’t happen. The $7 million Capital Improvement Plan, which includes a variety of projects, from affordable housing initiatives to a controversial downtown parking lot, will be delayed; those funds will be put in an emergency reserve to combat the short-term effects of the virus.

“Something that gives us housing five years from now or three years from now is less important to me than something that might keep people in their homes now,” said councilor Lloyd Snook. The city has already suspended utility shut-offs and public housing evictions.

UVA’s plans remain a looming unknown. Mayor Nikuyah Walker was pessimistic about the prospect of students returning: “We have an economy that’s built off of the university and tourism, and we’re going to have neither of those things,” she said at the meeting.

Things could get worse, too.

“We could see the revenue gap grow substantially larger,” said councilor Michael Payne. “There’s going to be very difficult decisions to make.”

The council extended the deadline to pass a budget from April 15 to June 30. “I think we’ll be able to maintain our public services,” said Richardson. “But there will be some struggles.”—Ben Hitchcock

Rivanna shooting remains unsolved

On April 7, two young men were shot at by an unknown person while fishing on the South Fork Rivanna Reservoir near Woodburn Road.

“We told the cop, ‘Look, there he is!’ And before we even realized it, [the person] was gone,” he adds. “I think he was trying...to get to an area where he could get a better read on us.”

Gunshots started flying again, forcing all three men to take cover. As soon as the shooting stopped, the young men immediately jumped in their car and booked it home.

The police officer called the college student later that day, and told him that more shots were fired after he and his cousin left, one of them going right over the officer’s head and striking the tree behind him. The officer said he did not see the shooter, or where he went, the college student says.

“I don’t think it’s necessarily fair to bash the cops, just because I don’t know all that goes on,” he adds. But “the reason they didn’t clear out the reservoir is beyond me… or even put out an alert [saying there’s] a possible shooting at Rivanna River.”

In response to C-VILLE’s questions, ACPD declined to comment, citing an ongoing investigation. But in an April 17 press release, the department stated that “strong evidence was collected to show that the two individuals in kayaks were not being shot at, nor targeted” and that “evidence shows there is no public threat.” The release did not specify what that evidence was.

Police said they are continuing to investigate “the individual that fired the weapon.” Anyone with information related to the incident is encouraged to call CrimeStoppers at 977-4000 or email CrimeStoppers@albemarle.org.

to determine the source of the shooting, or collect any evidence. However, the high schooler and his father performed their own search the following day, and claimed they found four 9-millimeter shell casings “10 steps into a trail,” where they believe the shooter fired toward the young men and the responding officer. The casings have since been turned over to the ACPD. Bad weather was forecast for that evening, so the two students and their families urged the police to bring trained dogs immediately to the area, because the rain could wash away gunpowder, as well as any fingerprints left on shell casings. The college student says the police did not bring a dog to the scene until two days after the shooting, when it had already rained twice.

“It was pretty worthless to even have a K-9 come out at that point,” says the college student.

n the morning of April 7, a local 20-year-old college student and his 18-year-old cousin woke up early, excited for a day of fishing on the South Fork Rivanna Reservoir. By 9am, they were on the water in their kayaks, waiting to see who would make the first catch of the day.

Shortly before 10 they heard gunshots. They couldn’t tell which direction they were coming from, but the young men were shocked when the second shot landed in the water about 30 to 40 yards away from their kayaks.

“We just figured this hunter was not seeing us,” says the college student, who for privacy reasons asked that we not use his or his cousin’s names. But “the next one got even closer. That’s when we realized we needed to start getting to shore.”

As the pair frantically paddled toward the riverbank, the shooter fired about a dozen more times in their direction, one shot landing five or six feet away from the college student’s kayak. He and his cousin reached dry land, and immediately took cover in the woods to the right of the boat ramp and called the police to report an active shooter.

“We figured [the shooting] was coming from somewhere along the loading dock, near our car,” he says. “When we called the cops, we realized that the shooter stopped.

We didn’t hear anything, so we figured we had a chance to get the kayaks in the car immediately and just to leave.”

A single Albemarle County police officer arrived around the time they finished packing up their kayaks. After talking with the officer for a few minutes, the young men noticed some movement across the water, near a black fence located on Millers Cottage Road.

“We saw this guy running down a hill in all black. He was like a ninja almost...he started from one end of the black fence to the other side,” the college student says. “He was full-on sprinting, but it looked effortless.

Like he was trained.”

Creating space For an at-home twist to our annual design issue, we asked a handful of local artists, architects, and designers where they’re spending the most time these days, and what spaces or objects are bringing them joy. Here’s what they had to share.

I call this my Zoom room. The laptop is positioned on my parents’ 1950s kitchen table in front of the window.

This area provides soft front lighting, a door to close, and a simple background. It also acts as an exercise room and art studio. The stickers remain from a childhood past.

This space has become increasingly multipurpose. It used to be a guest room and now is my home studio where I record and practice cello, write music, and devote hours to my newfound interest in sewing garments. I also teach Latin on Skype at the desk, to students who mostly live on the West Coast. The room is a corner nook in the apartment that I share with my partner. I love the morning light, the coziness, and the walls covered with artwork (some of the pieces and light fixtures are by local artist Bolanle Adeboye). In the evening, the light is dim and inviting, and from the windows I can hear passing trains and the hush of nighttime spring life.

I used to work out of this room when I freelanced. The built-in desks were actually going to be removed to use in our Stony Point office, but alas, we hadn’t gotten around to it, so this was practically movein ready. Our entire network is in the cloud, and we keep in touch with clients and each other through all the usual media.

In terms of function, the office works quite well for me. T&N printing is nearby, and they deliver. I mostly get half-size sets of drawings because they fit into my little flat files. Our office is as busy as ever—perhaps even more so. We do custom residential design for the most part, and so many people are getting to know their homes in new ways now.

That’s exactly what we help them do, so I’m happy to report that we’re hard at work, and so are the builders who make these houses happen.

We’ve been spending a lot of time on our back porch and just redid the entry at our driveway with a new fence that the kids helped us paint (homeschool at its finest!). Other than that, we’ve been laying low, working remotely, and trying our darnedest to stay sane through this.

But more than comfortable, which is a trait most recliners share, this chair is comforting. He had grown out of his smaller studio over Les Yeux du Monde Gallery and was working in the garage for several years, so this is a welcome evolution. When UVA transitioned to a work-from-home order, it was imperative that I clean up a space to work while I edit photos. Since I moved into this house I’ve had an office/ spare room in an upstairs bedroom. As with most people, it began with the best intentions, but the room inevitably became the junk drawer of the house.

We cleaned up the room and made it a pleasant place to work. Now, it has become one of my favorite places in the house, especially with the nice morning light. Behind my desk I have a very old flat file that was part of UVA’s Brooks Hall when it was a natural history museum in the late 1800s. It holds my camera gear and prints I’ve made of my work. My cat particularly enjoys spending most of the day lounging on the futon while I work. It’s a calming place that allows me to focus when I am home and editing.

This is a table that my husband, who’s a woodworker, made for me a couple years ago, and we designed it together. It’s the table we eat our dinner on. It’s also the place I set up for my Zoom meetings, because it has the best light. It looks out onto our backyard, and the woods. It’s been really beautiful to see the transition from winter to spring. As the leaves start to fill in it becomes a lot more private.

This is a family space, but it’s also become a workspace. It’s just that thing that encapsulates trying to homeschool and work and all the things that are happening at this moment, quality not assured.

Second Street launches new web gallery with ‘Bond/Bound’

hroughout the month of March, sad email after sad email landed in Kristen Chiacchia’s inbox. Art fairs postponed, gallery shows canceled, museums closed to the public—and then there were the news reports.

The Second Street Gallery executive director and chief curator decided to close her gallery on March 13, but she didn’t want to contribute to the deluge of despair if she didn’t have to.

Instead of focusing on what SSG couldn’t do for patrons and artists at this time (they’ve had to postpone four exhibitions at this point), Chiacchia and Outreach and Events Coordinator Lou Haney decided to put expertly curated exhibitions online.

They immediately created virtual tours of “By the Strength of Their Skin” by Aboriginal Australian artists Nonggirrnga Marawili, Regina Pilawuk Wilson, and Mabel Juli, and “Nature Tells its Own Story” by Pakistani artist Tanya Minhas.

And on Wednesday, April 15, the gallery launched “Bond/Bound,” on a new site, virtualssg.org. The exhibit, which takes stock of the complex, complicated experience of adjusting to life during a pandemic, is the first show the gallery has curated specifically for the web.

Haney had the idea for “Bond/Bound” as she started contemplating the dichotomy of bonding with other people—either those we’re already physically and emotionally close to, or the millions of complete strangers suddenly sharing our experience—during a time when we are bound to our homes.

One-hundred-and-eleven artists from around the world submitted work, and SSG accepted a little less than half for the exhibition, which covers a variety of media, from sculpture to collage to video. Viewers can click on individual images for a closer look, and to read the artists’ statements. “‘Dreams’ visualizes the feeling of self isolation for me. The desire for being close to other human beings,” explains Netherlandish artist Frijke Coumans of her photograph, in which a man lies sleeping on a bed in a pair of boxer-briefs, mannequin arms

Food trucks retool their approach to stay running

A

pril in Charlottesville is when the food truck business kicks into high gear. For Ignacio and Maria Becerra, the warm weather typically signals the return of long lines of customers snaking around the perimeter of the Charlottesville City Market, waiting for their Mexican Tacos.

But there’s nothing typical for the local food industry this spring. Mexican Tacos now operates Thursday evenings in the Becerra’s neighborhood, as well as at IX Art Park on Saturday and Sunday mornings, says truck manager Luis Becerra.

Food truck proprietors have had to be inventive to keep serving customers who crave anything but another home-cooked meal while honoring Virginia’s distancing guidelines. Whitney Matthews runs the seafood truck SpiceSea Gourmet, and says the timing couldn’t be worse. “Spring is when wineries and breweries start to host events with food trucks and music,” she says. “All events have been canceled or postponed... and corporate lunch spots have also stopped food truck visits because workers are home.”

The Angelic’s Kitchen truck parks at the high-profile Freebridge area of Pantops, where 250 meets High Street, and it’s still bringing in customers. But owner Angelic Jenkins is scrambling to make up for other losses by adding new delivery options and increasing her marketing. “I had to sign up for DoorDash, GrubHub, and Uber Eats,” says the soul food chef. “I also put together a family meal plan special to pick up from the food truck, and did lots of advertising on social media.”

Kelsey Naylor (Jen’s daughter) and Anna Gardner opened the Pye Dog pizza truck last fall. “We’ve switched our business model from wood-fired pizzas to take-home Chicago deep-dish pizzas for now,” says Naylor.

“And we’ve been donating all our profits from our sales to the Charlottesville Restaurant Community Fund to try to help out where we can.”

Despite food truck owners’ best efforts, sales have taken a huge hit, and coronavirus fears have transformed how business is conducted.

“My business has been cut by 80 percent,” Matthews says. “I’m also trying to be cautious about my own exposure to the virus.

erything. If I get sick, the business stops completely. So I try to limit my time and exposure to being around others.”

Farmacy food truck’s Jessica Hogan and her husband have lost their day jobs and are now solely reliant upon Farmacy’s income.

They’ve adapted quickly to the new reality, creating family-sized meals and using the truck to deliver to people’s homes. Hogan looks at the ability to continue connecting with the community as a silver lining.

“We are having to adapt and flow with what the universe is telling us to do,” she says.

“We have been wanting to do the food truck full-time for a while now and just couldn’t because of our other jobs. Now we are forced to, but in a way that’s kinda cool. I respect the change. And embrace it. Nothing wrong with getting creative.”

The Becerras are trying to make up for the loss of City Market business by serving Mexican tacos in their own neighborhood, and at IX Art Park on weekends.

draped over his body. “Seeing videos of hugging friends and people being close to each other almost starts to feel unreal,” she writes.

Hanna Washburn, based in Beacon, New York, thought a lot about the term “shelter in place” as she created “Hive,” a soft sculpture hanging in a tree that “emulated a home, and [is] constructed from the materials of home,” including her old backpack, a rug from her childhood, two of her T-shirts, and a work blouse from her mom, all in hues of pink, red, and white.

Other statements explain how the pandemic has affected artists’ creative processes. “The gloom hanging over our global heads has filtered into my work,” writes Chris Gregson, a Fredericksburg, Virginia, artist whose blackand-blue sumi ink grid of shapes on paper is a stark departure from his usual work, which he describes as “life-confirming abstract oil paintings rooted in the joys of spring.”

Charlottesville artist Madeleine Rhondeau-Rhodes submitted “Fairies always did admire the crocodiles,” a collage in which a human-rabbit figure, wearing moth wings both on its back and as clothing, carries a crocodile away from a house, against a purple-red-blue sky. “The pandemic has forced me to further retreat into my own imagination,” Rhondeau-Rhodes writes.

It’s unusual for artist statements to play such a prominent role in an exhibition, but for “Bond/Bound,” “in some cases, the statement was just as important as the work,” says Chiacchia.

Take Penny Chang’s 38-second movement piece, “If You Came This Way,” presented in black-and-white video. The camera focuses on Chang’s open palm as she spins around her bedroom, then wraps herself in an embrace, and holds her own hand. Chang’s statement deepens the viewer’s understanding of the piece: For the past 10 months, she’s been home alone, recovering from a traumatic brain injury sustained after a tree branch fell on her head in New York City’s Washington Square Park. Even before the pandemic, she knew the difficulty of isolation.

Chiacchia anticipates that COVID-19 will change the way we look at, and interact with, art. “We’ve taken for granted being able to just pop into a gallery on a Saturday afternoon, or go to a museum,” she says. And though she hopes people will once again fill those spaces when it’s safe to do so, she plans to continue adapting SSG’s exhibits for the web. SSG may even hold more online-only exhibitions.

At this point, it’s cliché to declare that a lot of great art will come out of this period in history; artists always create work as a response to the world around and within them, and the coronavirus pandemic will be no different. “Bond/Bound” offers an early look at some of this work, and how it will evolve from here. Whether some of these images become tropes of this period in time, or stand as original reactions, is impossible to tell, says Haney. But in this moment, they’re evidence of the ties that bind us.

Food that’s free Plants to forage in this strangest spring

As trips to the grocery store become daunting, the edible offerings in nature take on greater appeal.

safely conduct business. And for those who have lost their livelihoods, of course, there’s another, much deeper layer of worry around the task of putting food on the table.

Amidst all this, plants we can eat are busy growing in the yard, in the woods, and on the edges of fields. Even as nature presents one of its most frightening aspects in the form of the virus itself, it is also quietly offering sustenance and nourishment that is independent of those fragile, flawed human food systems. At my house, we’ve been eating more wild foods this year than ever before. I still don’t possess esoteric folk wisdom about plants, and most of our calories still come from the store. But I’ve read about foraging and talked with knowledgeable people and have learned, to my delight, that foraging food can be very simple, even convenient.

The best lesson was that many ubiquitous weeds, things that just about everyone can identify, are edible. Violets and dandelions both have edible greens and flowers. Those redbud trees blooming everywhere you look?

Amidst all this, plants we can eat are busy growing in the yard, in the woods, and on the edges of fields. salad, fresh and free. A little later in spring, lambs’ quarters appear—also known, for good reason, as wild spinach.

Next we learned to identify chickweed and garlic mustard, both very common and useful.

Someone mentioned chickweed pesto; my mind opened further. I heard we could drink tea from white pine needles. A friend taught me to recognize spicebush, to nibble its flowers and make tea from its twigs. It seemed like one of those closely guarded secrets at the time, but I soon realized spicebush is an extremely widespread plant in our local forests.

I got a book—John Kallas’ Edible Wild Plants—and it revealed instructions for both the labor-intensive (making your own marshmallows from, well, mallow plants)

and the beautifully easy (using oxeye daisy flowers as a garnish). With my kids, I read the classic My Side of the Mountain, in which a boy learns to live in the Catskills with almost total self-sufficiency: a little fanciful, but somehow reassuring, too.

My latest inspiration is an Instagram account, @mallorylodonnell, which daily supplies me with amazing new ideas (like sautéed hosta shoots). As with any wildfood information, I’ll verify these tips with other sources before I try them myself, but the empowering takeaway is that food is everywhere—taking so many more forms than we’ve been trained to believe by the standard grocery-store selection.

Also, deep forests aren’t required for successful foraging—even of gourmet delicacies.

I’ve had more time than ever before for hunting morel mushrooms this spring, and I have put in my hours walking in the woods. But the only morels we’ve actually found were growing right behind our mailbox. Cooked gently in butter, with a splash of cream, they were divine: a real gift from the ground.

ears ago, in the spring, I was out for a run in a rural spot and encountered an elderly man who told me he was hunting “dryland cress”—an edible plant. I was enchanted; it was like he’d stepped from the pages of that 1973 Foxfire volume on my shelf, in which Appalachian old-timers shared secrets of wild foods— plants with fabulous names like kedlick and warlock. Foods that never darken the door of a supermarket.

Though I was intrigued, I had nary a clue about how to acquire such knowledge. I did have an amateur interest in plants, though, which surged every spring. I like tracking when trees and wildflowers bloom, and each year I’ve tried to learn a few more plants’ names, whether native ephemeral flowers or hardy weeds in the lawn. Inevitably, the question of which ones are edible has become part of that learning curve.

In this strangest of springs, with the acquisition of groceries having suddenly become a worrisome, uncertain undertaking, foraging wild food takes on new immediacy. The situation neatly illustrates how dependent we’ve been on human systems for our food.

In winter, if I wanted fresh salad greens, I bought them from the store. But now we’re trying not to shop more than once every two weeks. And even if a tub of greens lasted two weeks in the fridge, which it won’t, I can’t count on getting that tub in the first place.

The last time we ordered groceries for curbside pickup, a third of the items we chose weren’t available. Along with our brown bags, we received a list of all the stuff we couldn’t have and would just have to do without.

It’s wonderful that the local food economy is still finding ways to connect eaters with farmers, but that system too has its limitations, and its risks—largely because of a lack of coherent guidance about how to

passed away on Friday, April 10th 2020 at the age of 94. Born to Franzie and Bessie Showalter Stevens on October 25th, 1925, she lived her life in Freshwater Cove, Lovingston. She was preceded in death by her husband of over 50 years, James Albert Wood Sr (Dooley), 14 of her siblings, and a great grandson.

Survived by one brother, Paul Randolph Stevens (Phyllis) of Grottoes; a son James Albert (Dool) Wood Jr (Beth) of Lovingston. Three daughters: Brenda Hughes of Lynchburg; Frances Bowen(Charles) of Lovingston; and Debra Martin (Steve) of Amherst.

Twelve Grandchildren: Teresa Viar (Brian) of Roseland; Jeff Carr (Christy) of Amherst; Patty Beatty (Ray) of Lynchburg; Rodney Hammack (Melissa) of Arrington; Angelique Miller (Travis) of Kitty Hawk, NC; Regina Stinnette (Junior) of Madison Heights; Austin Martin (Jessica) of Amherst; Mike Martin of Amherst; Donald Hughes (Julie) of Keysville; John Hughes of Staunton; Sean Wood of Amherst; and Matthew Wood of Lovingston.

Twenty-one great grandchildren and seven great great grandchildren.

Numerous nieces, nephews, neighbors and friends.

Roxie was a dedicated wife and mother, who raised four children and cared for numerous grandchildren all while helping her husband farm, and working/retiring from ConAgra in Crozet.

She loved her family, her flowers, and the beach!

She says, “If someone calls about a horse farm, I already know what they’re looking for— enough acreage to support the horses, facilities and fencing, pastures, water sources, and being able to open the gate and ride off the property.” Because she’s an experienced equestrian and REALTOR® who specializes in equestrian properties, the potential buyer doesn’t need to say all that. It’s understood.

Since Central Virginia is such a natural for horse farms, there are quite a few REALTORS® here that are also horse experts. In addition to Lyman, John Ince, REALTOR® with Wiley Real Estate, is another. “My career prior to real estate was managing and training for horse farms in California, Texas and finally here in Charlottesville. I’ve kept horses on my property since I moved here in 1982 and now have a field of happy retirees.”

It’s About the Land “It’s not about schools; it’s about the land” says Pam Dent, REALTOR® with Gayle Harvey Real Estate Inc., who also specializes in horse farms and estates. As a former horse seller and buyer, she found herself travelling to and familiarizing herself with horse properties throughout Virginia. She knows these farms in Central Virginia and in the Shenandoah Valley because she’s been on most of them. And, like other agents specializing in horse farms, she understands what a horse owner requires.

Ince agrees that horse farm buyers won’t compromise “when it comes to the land underneath it all. They will be looking for well drained land with soils that support good pasture. Our gently rolling topography is ideal in most cases, which is the reason there are so many horse farms around.” Add in our temperate climate and you have a winning combination that offers what horses and their owners need in order to thrive.

After the land, then the “dependencies” come into play. Lyman says this includes “first, the facilities and fencing. What’s the capacity of the stable?

Is there an indoor riding arena? What other sheltered areas are there for the horses and equipment, like tackle and feed rooms, or storage for hay?” Another consideration is the availability of water.

“Equally important is what’s adjacent to the property. Don’t underestimate how critical it is for a rider to not have to transport her horse to get in a good ride,” says Lyman. “Buyers want an assurance that they will be able to access adjacent properties, whether public lands like Shenandoah National Park, or an agreement with an adjacent property owner.

Particularly for smaller properties, this can be what makes or breaks the deal.”

Wide Range of Properties Do you have $29 million to spare?

How about $135,000? These are the range of prices for “horse farm” listings in early April in central Virginia.

Dent’s experience is that land listed as a horse farm can mean “anything from

professional and Olympic-class operations with large stables and indoor arenas to small hobby farms.”

A horse farm buyer isn’t necessarily looking for a lot of land. Ten to fifteen acres is sufficient. Ince notes, “It would be rare to see 100 acres used entirely for horses since horse owners are pretty hands on with their animals and generally want them close. More than likely, just a portion of a large farm is used for horses while the rest of the farm is put to its best use like grazing cattle or making hay.”

Because of that, Ince says, “A small or medium sized horse farm in a good area is a great listing and might appeal even to buyers who don’t have horses. The outbuildings can be versatile and useful for other hobbies too. Larger, professional horse farms with extensive stabling and indoor arenas can be a tougher sale as the interested buyers shrink to those rare professionals who can take advantage

Another reason horse farms are so popular here is that buyers aren’t just buying a chunk of land that works for the horses. They are really buying into an entire community of horse lovers with a rich history. The equestrian community actively supports a wide range of events that include trail-rides, polo, competitive showing, roping, and even jousting.

And the fox hunts that Thomas Jefferson and George Washington enjoyed, can still be found today, with four active hunt clubs within 30 minutes of Charlottesville.

Lyman fox hunted and had a horse farm. “A recent client from Northern Virginia was looking for property and considering land that wasn’t quite going to work. I was able to show her other areas near Free Union and Keswick more suited to her needs. Orange and Louisa also have some really lovely horse properties.”

That experience is the difference between a generalist and someone that has spent much of her lifetime in the saddle.

The Virginia Horse Center, in nearby Lexington, is also a draw. A world class facility hosting regional, national, and international equestrian events, the Center has more than 600 acres with nine show rings, eight schooling rings and a 4,000-seat coliseum. Although the Center usually has events each week, it is closed through June 10 due to Governor Northam’s Executive Order related to Covid-19.

Ince says “There are so many ways to participate in the horse world here.

Horse racing is enjoyed by thousands of spectators each year at several steeplechase events like Foxfield and Montpelier.

Colonial Downs has an active season of track and turf racing. Besides racing, the show horse world is vibrant with three-day eventing being one of the more challenging disciplines. Hunters and jumpers are shown at several venues in the area, most notably at the annual Keswick Horse show,” which is traditionally held in May but will be postponed this year.

Foxfield Spring 2020?

All the equestrians, horse lovers, socialites, and lovers of a good time have crossed out April 25 and have now saved June 13, 2020. Everyone’s keeping their fingers crossed that the Foxfield Races will be able to go on; nobody more than Race Director W. Patrick Butterfield.

30-year history before transferring the reigns to the newly formed Foxfield Racing, LLC. Butterfield was a volunteer outrider when the race first started, then moved up to Race Starter and eventually Race Director.

In his 30 years and 58 races (he only missed two), Butterfield has many fond memories and some that can only be enjoyed knowing they turned out well.

Twenty or so years ago a micro-burst struck the day before the race, shredding all the tents, sending a porta-john through the paddock, and downing live power lines across the track. “When I contacted Virginia Power the morning of the race their response was ‘Can’t you just postpone it?’ I replied that ‘30,000 people are going to be here in three hours!’”

Eventually, through some local connections and some hustling volunteers, the power line and the paddock were repaired, and the race went on as scheduled.

If all goes as planned, tens of thousands of people will be at Foxfield enjoying Butterfield’s final race on June 13.

Still Enough Juice in This Market?

There is no doubt that the corona virus has impacted this current real estate market, and the market for horse farms and estates in particular. Dent understands that “these buyers are making lifestyle decisions. They’re not just looking for a roof over their heads. And those lifestyle decisions are impacted by what’s going on with the economy.

a decent amount of inventory. Right now, buyers and sellers are both hesitating. But I’m optimistic that once this is over, we will be looking at a recovery this summer and then a strong fall and winter market.”

Fortunately, for prospective buyers dealing with travel restrictions, much is being done in the virtual space to allow that decision-making process to continue. FaceTime, Zoom calls, video tours of the buildings, and drone flyovers of the acreage all help buyers see and get a feel for the property. Dent encourages them to make the best use of the information, pictures, and tours that are available online so they can narrow their choices and still get the property just right for them.

All while limiting potential exposure.

“For the inventory that we do have, a smaller buyer pool may lead to some longer days on the market.” Despite that, Dent is confident that the clients are there. “It may just be a matter of shifting the timeline so that the buyer is a little bit more assured about the economy before choosing to pursue their dream lifestyle.”

Rest assured that this beautiful land won’t have changed. The barns and stables will still be here. The shows and races have been postponed, not canceled.

The white board fencing lining the rolling hills and pastures will still evoke images of a bucolic existence. And the horse loving community will still call Central Virginia home.
