Like so many others, I’ve been taking a lot of walks lately. My walk, and getting the mail, have become the highlights of my day. In this, my quarantine life resembles my life when my first child was born. She came, too, in early March, and life slowed down enough that, for maybe the first time, I began to notice the progression of spring.

As I paraded up and down the Brooklyn blocks to get her to sleep or, more often, just to give myself something to do, I watched the world wake up, and I marked every flower. First the daffodils and forsythia, then the azaleas and the tulips. The magnolias gave way to the cherry blossoms. Finally, the rhododendron and the roses.

Here, we are lucky enough to live near Meadow Creek, and this spring, with nowhere to go, I’ve watched the bare brown banks come slowly alive.

I’ve noticed the first yellow wildflowers, lesser celandine (which a friend later informed me were invasive), and how the buttercups have shown up now, after the violets. My girls have been delighted by the preponderance of robins in the yard, the occasional flash of a bluebird. In the creek, we’ve spotted lizards and snakes, and once, I swear, a turtle.

As cities around the world have seen how clean the air gets when auto and air travel drastically decrease, many people have also discovered a newfound connection to the natural world around them (p. 8). That matters, because, while global emissions levels have dropped, they haven’t dropped enough.

To have any hope of mitigating the most disastrous effects of climate change, we will need to sustain even bigger changes. If there is anything good that can come out of this pandemic, perhaps it will be a reframing of our relationship with nature; a visceral reminder, when rational arguments have failed, of what we stand to lose.—Laura Longhine

NEWS On April 30, white supremacist Daniel McMahon of Florida pleaded guilty to charges of levying racially motivated threats of violence against local activist and community leader “D.G.,” a would-be candidate for Charlottesville City Council who subsequently dropped out of the race. McMahon faces an additional charge for cyberstalking, and could serve up to six years in prison.

Every day, Charlottesville becomes slicker and sleeker, home to more and more tech companies and luxury apartments. Now it’s down another weird, charming diner. Bluegrass “represented the flavor of the town,” Benninger says. “Charlottesville—it’s quirky.

Every town needs one of those places. It’s somewhere to feel safe. It’s somewhere to feel like, it’s home.”

Opening up With pressure mounting nationwide to “reopen” the country, Governor Ralph Northam announced Monday afternoon that Virginia could begin reopening as early as May 15.

COVID-19 tests performed last week showed a decline in positive cases in Virginia, indicating that social distancing efforts have slowed the spread of the virus here.

Hospitalizations for coronavirus also remain below the state’s emergency capacity. But nationwide, a recent Trump administration report forecasts new coronavirus cases to hit 200,000 a day by month’s end.

Phase I of reopening, which could last two to four weeks (or longer), will continue to limit social gatherings to 10 people or less. People will still be advised to wear facemasks in public and stay home as much as possible, especially if they are vulnerable. Though teleworking will be encouraged, businesses—including restaurants, retail, fitness, personal care, and entertainment—will be allowed to reopen with industryspecific guidelines. All establishments will be required to use face masks, as well as implement physical distancing measures and enhanced cleaning practices.

If cases continue to decline, a second phase would ease additional restrictions on businesses, and limit social gatherings to 50 people for approximately two to four weeks. Vulnerable populations will still be “safer” at home. When there is no evidence of rebound cases, the state will enter its final phase of reopening, lifting all restrictions on social gatherings. However, it remains unclear as to when vulnerable populations will no longer be asked to stay home.

It’s a complicated question, but here are two easy answers: great food and local rituals. For years, Bluegrass Grill and Bakery has offered both. There’s the pre-meal ritual of waiting outside, rain or shine, for a chance to squeeze into a rickety wooden chair in a little diner with mandolins hanging from the rafters. Then there’s the whole wheat biscuits, groaning stacks of pancakes, and specials like the Hungry Norman—eggs Benedict and sausage links on an English muffin, with blackberry jam and goat cheese. (Often, too, there’s the postmeal ritual of running to the ATM, because you forgot that the place only takes cash.)

That’s all gone, now. This week, owner Chrissy Benninger announced that the coronavirus shutdown left no path forward for Bluegrass. After 19 years, the beloved spot has closed for good.

Benninger says the prospect of an indefinite period at partial capacity spelled doom for the restaurant. She was granted a federal Paycheck Protection Program loan, but she turned it down—the loan would’ve covered wages, but wouldn’t have been able to cover rent, insurance, or worker’s compensation. “The numbers did not even close to add up,” Benninger says. “My heart did not win this one.”

At its May 4 meeting, City Council agreed to add the roughly $250,000 it received under the CARES Act for coronavirus relief into its current Community Development Block Grant plan. The money will go toward public services, economic development, and administration/planning. An additional $500,000 the city received from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development will be used for housing assistance and community and economic development.

This week, the school sent out a survey asking students for input on a handful of potential options, including mixing online and in-person classes, breaking the semester into chunks, and even holding classes on the weekends to thin out the crowds in academic buildings. ust about everything has changed in the last month—and as our habits have shifted, so has our relationship with the local environment.

“People aren’t flying, people aren’t driving,” says Jamie Brunkow, the senior advocacy manager of the James River Association. Those transportation changes have effects for our air and our water. “Typically we think of that as less smog and less air pollution. But a lot of the nitrogen that ends up going into our rivers, going into the [Chesapeake] Bay, comes from the air.”

StreetLight Data, a firm specializing in transportation data, has been tracking the change in vehicle miles traveled all over the country since the COVID crisis began.

From the week of April 19 to April 25, Albemarle County drivers covered around 75 percent fewer miles than during an average week before the crisis. Charlottesville drivers were even more conservative, covering 82 percent fewer miles than in a baseline week. That drop-off is less pronounced but still visible in more rural counties—in Buckingham, for example, drivers only drove 40 percent fewer miles.

Charlottesville’s airport saw 84 flights canceled due to coronavirus in just the

second half of March. Air travel has become a central concern for environmental activists—one widely repeated statistic says for every person who takes a round trip flight from New York to London, 30 square feet of ice is lost from the arctic.

And short flights, like the Charlottesville airport’s regular connections to nearby hubs in Philadelphia and Charlotte, produce more harmful emissions per mile than longer flights.

Additionally, decreased traffic means the world is quieter and darker, which is good for animals like birds and frogs. “A lot of disruption in species reproduction has been attributed to the disruption of their light receptors or ability to hear calls for mating,” says Chris Miller, the president of the Piedmont Environmental Council.

“There’s a lot of evidence that truck noise, car noise, and light pollution interfere with those natural cycles.”

Meanwhile, with social distancing in effect, outdoor spaces that remain accessible are seeing increased visitors. Lisa Wittenborn, program director of the Rivanna Conservation Alliance, says that the trails around the river are getting more use than ever—which is a double-edged sword.

“We’re really excited that people are out and using the resource,” Wittenborn says.

“We hope people are being careful not to

This year, the two have coincided.

Ramadan began on April 23, and local observers have had to adapt to a holiday altered by a pandemic.

“What’s different is that at the end of Ramadan we’ll have a celebration called Eid, where a whole bunch of people come together and eat together,” says Charlottesville High School junior Abdellatif Yahya. “But we can’t do that because, you know, the coronavirus thing, six feet apart. It’ll just be us, my family.”

Yahya lives in town with his parents and three younger siblings, but he was born in Cairo. His immediate family came

to the U.S. in 2006, and his extended relatives live in their homeland, Sudan.

Yahya is one of a number of refugee students in Charlottesville who are juggling not just the holiday and the pandemic but also the college admissions process.

“Some of these students are Muslim, and they also have kind of said, ‘because we’re fasting, it might be hard to keep up with my homework, it might be hard to stay in touch with my teachers,’” says Rebecca Hill, the acting executive director of the Better Future Foundation, which provides counseling to students like Yahya.

Yahya, though, is an experienced faster. “[The] first time, your stomach feels weird. But the next day your stomach gets used to it. Your body knows that you’re not going to eat anything until this particular hour,” he says.

impact the river. That people are picking up after their dogs, and picking up their trash and not disrupting the banks, and that sort of thing.”

The crisis is having other messy effects.

“They’re seeing evidence of the toilet paper shortage in the wastewater treatment plant,” Wittenborn says, “because of the things people are flushing. Those wipes say they’re flushable but they’re not. They can cause clogs and backups and sewage leaks.

While other religious traditions, from Passover Seders to Easter Sunday services, have been held online this year, the Islamic Society’s night prayer won’t be streamed.

“In Islam, you can’t just hold a prayer service over the internet,” Halaibeh says.

The idea is that “you can always pray by yourself, so you don’t need internet to do it.”

“People have been praying in their homes,” says Halaibeh, a radiologist by trade. “Obviously it’s not the same as being in the mosque or the masjid, and seeing other people. It’s like watching a soccer game on TV [versus] being at the stadium.”

Still, the notion that some things can’t, and indeed shouldn’t, be replaced with a Zoom meeting might feel refreshing.

“You don’t have to hold prayers in the masjid for them to be valid,” Halaibeh says. “They are valid anywhere you pray them.”—Ben Hitchcock

That charitable spirit has animated the Islamic Society of Central Virginia, Charlottesville’s masjid, or temple. During a normal Ramadan, the community breaks fast together at the mosque a few times a week, with a festive catered meal, says Mohammad Halaibeh, the society’s outreach secretary. With large gatherings outlawed, that’s not possible.

“We estimate a decent number of community members have been affected by the COVID situation,” Halaibeh says.

“What we’re going to do starting this week is buy food in bulk—meat, chicken, oil, dates—and make boxes and distribute these boxes to families in need.”

The ban on gatherings disrupts other important elements of the holiday, too.

Overall, though, this period is a sort of experiment in a possible, more sustainable future: Zoom meetings aren’t fun, but they do decrease emissions. “There’s something about a hard stop like this that really forces you to reevaluate the frame and how to move forward,” Brunkow says. “It’s going to be really interesting to look back at these unintended consequences to see where things change.”

Maybe those changes will manifest as subtle attitude shifts. “I do think that this whole experience has brought to the forefront the importance of having these wild or semi-wild open spaces that we can all enjoy together,” Wittenborn says. “It’s gotten a lot of people to stop and really pay attention to what’s going on outside their windows. Seeing flowers bloom they’ve never noticed before, watching birds, whatever it is. I think people are much more in tune with the natural world right now.

ith courses moved online for a significant portion of the spring semester, colleges across the country have had to decide on the fairest way to grade students in the midst of the ongoing pandemic. While some institutions, like Yale and Columbia, have opted for mandatory pass/fail policies, others, like the University of Virginia, have implemented a credit/general credit/no credit system, with the option to receive a letter grade. However, students had to choose between the credit and letter grade for each course by the last day of classes, April 28—before most final exams.

Since UVA Provost Liz Magill sent out a university-wide email announcing the policy on March 18, hundreds of students have protested against it on a variety of platforms, from Twitter to The Cavalier Daily, citing the numerous ways in which it puts certain students—particularly those of low socioeconomic status—at a disadvantage.

After reading about the challenges some students have experienced taking online classes, second-year Zaki Panjsheeri wrote an article for the Virginia Review of Politics advocating for a universal credit/no credit policy.

Put a ring on it (later) Postponed weddings take a toll on vendors

ith its array of elegant wineries and historic inns, nestled in between the picturesque Blue Ridge mountains, Charlottesville has become one of the country’s top wedding destinations. Last year, over 1,500 couples said “I do” in the area, according to The Wedding Report. And in January, brides. com named Pippin Hill Farm & Vineyards one of the best wedding venues in the U.S. But due to the ongoing pandemic and stay-at-home order, hundreds of weddings have been put on hold—right at the beginning of the industry’s busiest season. And that has taken a heavy toll on vendors.

The Catering Outfit has been forced to postpone over $300,000 worth of business so far, says sales director Courtney Hildebrand. And because many of the weddings it was hired to cater have been pushed to next year, it is difficult to take on any new clients at the moment.

Though it has received some relief from its landlord, TCO did not get a federal Paycheck Protection Program loan, forcing it to find new ways to bring in revenue.

Since March, it has sold to-go and heatand-eat meals, as well as meal kits, out of a tent in its parking lot. Offering a new menu every day, the drive-through has been busy, and has received a lot of positive feedback, says Hildebrand.

The company is also operating a food pantry for out-of-work food service employees. “If they bring a pay stub on Mondays and Thursdays, they can get a free bag of groceries,” Hildebrand says. “And we have partnered with a couple of different com-

panies to provide hot meals to first responders and hospital workers.”

For freelance vendors like photographers, the situation can be more complicated. Jen Fariello is used to shooting weddings nearly every weekend from spring to fall. But now all of her weddings up to July 25 have been postponed. And—like many other vendors— she has not received any government aid.

“Three businesses I know in Charlottesville have gotten their PPP loans. A lot of the [others] haven’t heard back,” Fariello says. “A couple of people have been trying to get unemployment. But as self-employed people, it’s complicated...you have to prove that you’re going out and trying to get a job.

But we still have jobs. We’re [just] trying to keep our businesses alive.”

With some couples not wanting to wait a year to get married, Fariello has been able to shoot family ceremonies in backyards and gardens, she says. She’s also done a few engagement and maternity shoots, but demand is low overall.

Officiant (and former Charlottesville mayor) Dave Norris is just as frustrated with the lack of assistance wedding vendors, and other small businesses, have received, while multiple wealthy corporations have been bailed out.

Norris has been able to bring in some income by officiating at-home ceremonies.

However, he’s lost over 90 percent of his spring wedding business, with most ceremonies being rescheduled for the late summer or fall.

After saying “I do,” the couple headed to Mount Ida to pick up some beer and wine, then swung by The Catering Outfit, where their catering team had prepared a weddingnight meal kit. Their planner, Karen McGrath of Anne Arden Events, brought flowers to the ceremony, and their photographer, Meredith Sledge, caught the whole thing on film.

“It was really nice to still have all of our vendors involved,” Nguyen says.

That’s not to say the couple, who met six years ago while attending UVA, didn’t hit some snags when it came to re-planning their wedding. While they’d settled on a May 4 ceremony, they decided to move the real wedding celebration—with friends and family—to next April. One problem: Next spring, Ben’s groomsman’s wedding is the first week of April, Audrey’s maid of honor’s is April 17, and one of the bridesmen is getting married two weeks after April 24.

It was a complicated shuffle, but it all worked out in the end—with another silver lining: Because her wedding ring got caught in New York City, Nguyen now has two: the last-minute replacement she wore May 4, and one she’ll save for next year’s muchawaited big day.

Hedge Fine Blooms has also lost most of its business thanks to postponed weddings, as well as canceled proms, graduations, and other events. To keep the lights on, it’s currently offering contactless flower delivery and curbside pickup every day, and has provided floral arrangements for at-home ceremonies, says owner Karen Walker.

Due to the types of services they provide, other wedding vendors have not been able to adapt alternative business models. Wedding planner Sarah Fay Waller, owner of Day

by Fay, has had all of her clients push their weddings to September or later, leaving her without income for several months.

Fortunately, says Waller, her husband’s job is keeping their household afloat. But she rec-

ognizes that “for other vendors...to not have that income coming in is a real detriment.”

At Old Metropolitan Hall, “we are just trying to keep the clients we have encouraged and happy, while also trying to book new clients for the end of 2020 and into 2021,” says sales director Sarah Beasley.

Fortunately, “we have seen a ton of inquiries for couples who are needing a new venue after their original wedding date had to be moved,” she adds. “Venues have definitely been teaming up in the last few weeks trying to pass off clients when their dates no longer match the original venue’s availability.”

Still, times have been tough, as nearly everyone Beasley knows in the venue business has been furloughed or laid off.

As the bride notes, she and her husbandto-be may have had to postpone the wedding, but “everything besides the date remains the same—venue, vendors, and anticipation.”

Screen time Lena Turkheimer and Mark Owen Original/new wedding date: April 11, 2020 Much like the virus’ early news coverage, Lena Turkheimer and Mark Owen felt like their wedding plans were changing day-today. After Early Mountain Vineyards—the venue where they’d planned to have their spring celebration—announced it wouldn’t hold any weddings while Virginia’s stay-athome order was in effect, the couple started dreaming up Plan Bs.

“We pretty immediately knew that we wanted to have it in my parents’ backyard, weather permitting,” Turkheimer says. They hoped to include their immediate family and wedding party, then pared down to only their parents and siblings, but even that was an unrealistic expectation, given that their siblings were spread out across the country.

Finally, they decided to include just their parents and broadcast the “I dos” via Zoom for everyone else. Once the decision was made, everything came together—the morning of the ceremony.

Turkheimer’s parents assembled the arbor frame the couple initially planned to use at EMV, and the bride and her mom decorated it with flowers while Owen and Turkheimer’s dad set about figuring out the video feed, Macgyvering a rubber band to an iPad on a standing desk.

“It was not the prettiest,” Turkheimer says, “but it was great because none of the guests could see behind the scenes.”

As for the wedding “guests,” those near and far really got into it, with the bridal party donning their suits and dresses for the occasion.

“The tuxes were often paired with shorts, though, and we had a few people in bathrobes,” Turkheimer says. “One of my friends is staying at her parents’ house, so she decided to attend in the only formal dress she had there—her high school prom dress.”

When it came down to it, having the smaller-scale day allowed the couple to focus on what matters most, Turkheimer says: “Getting to marry each other… [and] the support of our closest friends and family.”

Sixteen hours after Anika Kempe and Patt Eagan made the call to postpone their wedding, all the details were in place. With a few immediate family members in the high-risk category for COVID, and others having to travel internationally and from the West Coast, says Kempe, they felt confident in making the tough call.

“Neither of us could imagine getting married without any of these people present,” Kempe says. “We let our guests know on March 23, so relatively early into the current pandemic reality.”

Once they decided on postponement, with the help of their wedding planner, Bryce Carson of Richmond-based Roberts & Co., the couple began checking with vendors about availability. Their venue, The Clifton, offered Memorial Day in 2021 at no additional charge, which was a bit of foreshadowing for how well the process would go with

nies, getting a Mother’s Day cake from a 13 local bakery, or treating yourself to some flowers from an area florist.

Couples planning a wedding for 2021 should also book early, Waller adds. Due to all of the weddings currently being rescheduled, vendors may not be available later.

Most important, current and future clients can “meet in the middle” with their vendors, says Beasley. “Everyone is going to unfortunately lose something during this time, and it would really help the industry stay alive if people could be gracious and kind to one another right now, remembering that we’re all in this strange season together.”

For Hildebrand and her colleagues, only time will answer the biggest question: What will weddings be like once this is all over?

And can vendors survive until then?

She speculates that people will continue to be wary of large gatherings for a while, and that small, intimate weddings at outdoor venues—with plated meals, not buffets—will become a trend. Couples may also choose to elope instead, putting their reception off until they feel safe enough to have it.

“We have to ensure the health of our guests [and] servers,” says Hildebrand. We may “have servers wear masks and always have gloves on, and even have guests and tables spread out more. It’s going to be a very different look I think for a while.”

Smaller ceremonies require fewer vendors, Fariello points out. And with millions of Americans currently out of work, people may not be able to spend a lot of money on weddings.

“It will take a couple years for our industry to come back to the level that it was,” Fariello predicts.

For now, vendors urge clients to postpone, not cancel, their events, and to not fight with vendors over deposits or retainers.

“We’re not trying to take money from our clients, but clients need to realize that those funds [cover] operating expenses...so much of the work that goes into a wedding happens all year, and not just on the wedding day,” says Fariello. Instead, “work with your vendors to figure out how we can have safe weddings.”

Birthdays, holidays, anniversaries, and other milestones don’t just stop when times are tough, and continuing to mark them as we normally would— perhaps with a cake—can be a great comfort.

“When you’re facing adversity or crisis, finding that silver lining in things—that reason to celebrate, to raise your spirit— raises your hope,” adds Rock. “Hopefully with cake, we can be part of that encouragement. During this time, there’s still reason to celebrate.”

Restaurants throughout the area continue to band together to nourish health care workers and other community members in need. Corner Juice is making bi-weekly drops of immunity-boosting juices to various UVA hospital departments. A $60 donation equals a case of juice for health care workers, and those in a position to give can do so on the Corner Juice website.

Like many local small business owners, the pair had big plans for 2020: Park their trailer at more spots and grow their social media presence (the photos of Watson family members in the quippy “Sliced, Sliced Baby” and “Cake Slayer” shirts are aces).

They were also set to move the baking operation into a commercial kitchen. After a busy February, they seemed poised for success, but in March, it all screeched to a halt.

Markets, wineries, and other spots closed, and Megan, who bakes every item from scratch, didn’t feel safe preparing food for others to eat until she knew more about the COVID-19 virus and how it was spread.

rowing up, Megan Watson ate a lot of great food at home. Her mother cooked delicious meals in the way of Julia Child. But she was also very health-conscious and “not a baker,” says Megan (i.e., not into sugar). The family enjoyed treats like cakes for celebrations only, and for Megan, every slice was its own special occasion.

“It didn’t matter what kind of cake it was, or where it was from,” she says, laughing. “If it was called ‘cake,’ I was going to eat it.”

When Megan married and had her own family, she baked cakes for birthdays and other special occasions. And her cakes were good.

Really, really good, says her husband, Rock Watson, who, like his wife, didn’t eat a lot of homemade cake growing up (“because of my circumstances,” he says, he was more of a Little Debbie snacks kind of guy). But when his grandmother did make one, it was bliss.

Now the Watsons share their mutual love of cake with all of Charlottesville via their mobile bakery, Sliced. Cake Bar. As its name suggests, Sliced. offers cake by the slice, in addition to whole cakes, and cake pops. And, because it’s based around a bar concept, cake flights (like a wine-tasting flight, but with multiple flavors of cake) and buttercream frosting shots are on the menu, too. And the flavors are endless: chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream, strawberry with vanilla, coconut, confetti, lemon, carrot cake…the list goes on.

The Watsons usually set up at the Key’s Corner Indoor City Market and tow their adorable bakery trailer to local vineyards like Grace Estate and King Family. Megan bakes for weddings, baby showers, graduations, retirement parties, and those “just

adio is easily taken for granted, in part because it’s invisible and, in most cases, ubiquitous. Program hosts and DJs keep us company in rush-hour traffic or during the workday.

They keep us informed when the power’s out or the internet’s down, but the transmitter’s still going. Radio is as essential as it is entertaining, and as the COVID-19 pandemic goes on, so must the shows.

Local stations are taking safety precautions like limiting studio access and suggesting hosts wear masks and gloves and wipe down mics, headphones, and other surfaces with disinfectant before and after their shifts.

But each station is unique, and other tweaks vary depending on a station’s size, reach, and what sort of programming it offers.

Since March 12, WNRN 91.9 FM jocks have worked almost exclusively from home, says station General Manager and Program Director Mark Keefe. The locally owned nonprofit station broadcasts from multiple transmitters—in Charlottesville, Richmond, and Lynchburg—and already had a system in place, as well as enough spare mics, consoles, and cords to get DJs on the air from anywhere with an internet connec-

tion. (Volunteer DJs did not get a rig, so on-staff folks are now covering those slots.)

In the absence of the live in-studio sessions with Virginia bands, WNRN upped its play count of local acts like Lowland Hum and David Wax Museum. It’s not the same, says Keefe, but it’s something.

Things haven’t changed much at WCNR 106.1 FM The Corner, another adult alternative station, owned by national media company Saga Communications, which is headquartered in Michigan. Morning show host and Program Director Kendall Stewart, as well as her counterparts, could work from home, but are still going in. Stewart’s “Community Corner” segment now highlights creative ways folks are helping each other out during the pandemic, while news breaks are solely about COVID-19, and pandemic-related PSAs by major label artists like HAIM and Leon Bridges are aired.

She’s had to re-think the station’s “Corner Lounge,” which previously brought touring artists into the station for a live set before a show at an area venue. Now in the “Long Distance Lounge,” she hosts bands like Best Coast and Illiterate Light over the phone or via Instagram Live. “I’m not about to let that go away,” says Stewart.

In evaluating his success as a human being, should we emphasize his poor military performance and downplay his literary output? Of course not! Likewise, Cancerian, in the coming weeks I’d like to see you devote vigorous energy to appreciating what you do best and no energy at all to worrying about your inadequacies.

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22): “Fortune resists halfhearted prayers,” wrote the poet Ovid more than 2,000 years ago. I will add that Fortune also resists poorly formulated intentions, feeble vows, and sketchy plans—especially now, during an historical turning point when the world is undergoing massive transformations. Luckily, I don’t see those lapses being problems for you in the coming weeks, Leo. According to my analysis, you’re primed to be clear and precise. Your willpower should be working with lucid grace. You’ll have an enhanced ability to assess your assets and make smart plans for how to use them.

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Last year the Baltimore Museum of Art announced it would acquire works exclusively from women artists in 2020. A male art critic complained, “That’s unfair to male artists.” Here’s my reply: Among major permanent art collections in the U.S. and Europe, the work of women makes up 5 percent of the total. So what the Baltimore Museum did is a righteous at-

tempt to rectify the existing excess. It’s a just and fair way to address an unhealthy imbalance. In accordance with current omens and necessities, Virgo, I encourage you to perform a comparable correction in your personal sphere.

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): In the course of my life, I’ve met many sharp thinkers with advanced degrees from fine universities—who are nonetheless stunted in their emotional intelligence. They may quote Shakespeare and discourse on quantum physics and explain the difference between the philosophies of Kant and Hegel, and yet have less skill in understanding the inner workings of human beings or in creating vibrant intimate relationships. Yet most of these folks are not extreme outliers. I’ve found that virtually all of us are smarter in our heads than we are in our hearts. The good news, Libra, is that our current Global Healing Crisis is an excellent time for you to play catch up. Do what poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti suggests: “Make your mind learn its way around the heart.”

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov.21): Aphorist Aaron Haspel writes, “The less you are contradicted, the stupider you become. The more powerful you become, the less you are contradicted.”

Let’s discuss how this counsel might be useful to you in the coming weeks. First of all, I suspect you will be countered and challenged more than usual, which will offer you rich opportunities to become smarter. Secondly, I believe you will become more powerful as long as you don’t try to stop or discourage the influences that contradict you.

In other words, you’ll grow your personal authority and influence to the degree that you welcome opinions and perspectives that are not identical to yours.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): “It’s always too early to quit,” wrote author Norman Vincent Peale.

We should put his words into perspective, though. He preached “the power of positive thinking.” He was relentless in his insistence that we can and should transcend discouragement and disappointment. But perhaps he was overly enthusiastic in his implication that we should never give up. What do you think, Sagittarius? I’m guessing this will be an important question for you to consider in the coming weeks. It may be time to re-evaluate your previous thoughts on the matter and come up with a fresh perspective. For example, maybe it’s right to give up on one project if it enables you to persevere in another.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): The 16th-century mystic nun Saint Teresa of Avila was renowned for being overcome with rapture during her spiritual devotions. At times, she experienced such profound bliss through her union with God that she levitated off the ground. “Any real ecstasy is a sign you are moving in the right direction,” she wrote. I hope that you will be periodically moving in that direction yourself during the coming weeks, Capricorn.

Although it may seem odd advice to receive during our Global Healing Crisis, I really believe you should make appointments with euphoria, delight, and enchantment.

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Grammy-winning musician and composer Pharrell Williams has expertise in the creative process. “If someone asks me what inspires me,” he says, “I always say, ‘That which is missing.’” According to my understanding of the astrological omens, you would benefit from making that your motto in the coming weeks. Our Global Healing Crisis is a favorable time to discover what’s absent or empty or blank about your life, and then learn all you can from exploring it. I think you’ll be glad to be shown what you didn’t consciously realize was lost, omitted, or lacking.

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20): “I am doing my best to not become a museum of myself,” declares poet Natalie Diaz. I think she means that she wants to avoid defining herself entirely by her past. She is exploring tricks that will help her keep from relying so much on her old accomplishments that she neglects to keep growing. The other stations we spoke with are bigger than WPVC and don’t yet share Lenert’s financial worries. And both WTJU and WNRN, who rely on listener donations for much of their operating budgets, held rather successful fundraising drives in April.

“People want something reliable” right now, says Keefe. When “the reliable disappears, it becomes even more bleak.”

(April 20-May 20): “The future belongs to those who see possibilities before they become obvious,” says businessperson and entrepreneur John Sculley. You Tauruses aren’t renowned for such foresight.

It’s more likely to belong to Aries and Sagittarius people. Your tribe is more likely to specialize in doing the good work that turns others’ bright visions into practical realities. But this Year of the Coronavirus could be an exception to the general rule. WTJU is a freeform station, which means individual DJs in the jazz, classical, folk, and rock departments have complete control over what they play on their shows. It broadcasts live 21 hours a day, with the help of six paid staff members and dozens of volunteer DJs (including this reporter). Some DJs go into the station, while others create their shows in advance and stream that file into the on-air studio. Some broadcast live remotely, using personal computers and headphones, in addition to pretty intricate tech workarounds developed by station staff.

WPVC 94.7 FM, a progressive nonprofit community station that airs a variety of news, talk, arts, and music programming, including Spanish-language material, may be one of the hardest hit of our local stations—it’s had to adjust both its show schedule and its personnel. “A lot of our volunteers are either in the high-risk category due to age or pre-existing conditions, or they care for someone who’s high risk,” and have to avoid the station, says co-founder and manager Jeff Lenert. Instead, WPVC now carries a mostly automated, non-commercial stream from Free Speech Television, which includes some of the shows already familiar to WPVC listeners, such as “Democracy Now!” and the nationally syndicated “The Stephanie Miller Show.”

But the station—which has seen its already lean rainy day fund depleted by legal fees incurred in an ongoing FCC lawsuit brought against it and four other locally owned, low-power stations last fall

The Charlottesville Area Association of REALTORS® (CAAR) and the Blue Ridge Home Builders Association (BRHBA) recently partnered to host a two-day blood drive for the public at the Hillsdale Conference Center.

Approximately 60 individuals, including members from CAAR and the BRHBA, made appointments to donate blood.

“An estimated 38 percent of Americans are eligible to donate blood or platelets, but less than 10 percent actually donate each year,” said BRHBA President Jodi Mills. “I’m pleased to see our two associations come together and find a way that could possibly save lives.”

“Both CAAR and the BRHBA wanted to support our community during this difficult time,” said CAAR President Tom Woolfolk. “In addition to this blood drive, CAAR was also able to donate over 100 pairs of disposable shoe covers for medical use to the University of Virginia Hospital.”

The American Red Cross practices all recommended CDC Safety Recommendations during blood drives and requests donors wear a mask and maintain social distancing.

What’s Happening Around Town?

Live Arts launches “Forging Ahead Campaign” Live Arts is launching a $250,000 community giving campaign to help it recover from the devastating effects of COVID-19 and be a source of personal connection for the community in this time of physical and emotional isolation. Its goal is to mobilize community support by June 30, 2020.

The Forging Ahead Campaign is part of a larger effort to close its nearly $410,000 income gap caused by the global health crisis. The gap represents about 44 percent of Live Arts’ annual budget.

Source of the Income Gap About half of the loss was caused by program postponements and cancellations after the theater decided to go dark March 14 in the interest of protecting public health. Four shows, several education programs, summer camps, and Live Arts’ Fringe Festival program were adversely impacted.

The other half of the loss came from budgeted but unrealized income from space rentals, playbill advertising, sponsorships, cancelled fundraising events, and individual giving.

Strategies to Close the Gap “Before we reached out to the community, we looked at every angle of cutting operating costs and seeking alternative

revenue sources,” says Executive Director Anne Hunter, who joined the Live Arts staff in early February.

“Our ticket holders have been extremely generous, donating more than $23,000 in unused tickets to cancelled plays and workshops. Our staff has sacrificed by taking wage and salary cuts. But when we added it all up, we still had a gap of $250,000.

“We are urging people whose lives have been touched by Live Arts to help us close the gap by June 30 to avoid crippling our 30th anniversary year with a major deficit,” says Hunter.

Two Ways to Forge Connection The Forging Ahead Campaign takes its name from Live Arts’ mission of “forging theater and community.” That mission is never more evident than in the nonprofit’s current outreach efforts to forge personal connections.

Its first initiative is a free, livestreamed festival called “30 Plays in 30 Days.” Throughout May, Live Arts volunteers and staff will collaborate remotely to produce abbreviated presentations of plays from each of the last 30 seasons.

The 30th day will feature one postponed show from this year’s 29th season. The festival will culminate with a virtual reveal of Live Arts’ 30th Anniversary Season on May 31.

“This free retrospective is our gift to the community. It not only celebrates the best of Live Arts over the last three decades, but it will be a source of personal connection in a time of physical and emotional isolation,” says Artistic Director Jeremy Duncan Pape, who volunteered for his first play at Live Arts more than 20 years ago.

The second initiative is a free “Life Arts” video series where volunteers make short videos demonstrating a useful life skill that is related to what they do at Live Arts: sew on a button, rewire a lamp, install a drywall anchor, etc. The fiveminute demos will be curated by Live Arts and posted on YouTube and Facebook this spring when the theater is dark.

“For 29 years, we have been a force for bringing the community together in good times and in bad. Today is no different. We are asking individuals and businesses to be a part of bringing Charlottesville together as we move toward a post COVID-19 world. Through creative expression. Through meaning-making.

St. Anne’s-Belfield Teachers Produce Daily Morning Meeting Podcast for Kids, Families St. Anne’s-Belfield School Librarian, Sarah FitzHenry, and Learning Village Coordinator of Computer Science, Kim Wilkens, have teamed up to offer a new daily diversion: the Morning Meeting podcast.

“In the first week after schools closed, thousands of resources started popping up all over the internet,” recalled FitzHenry. “Many were fantastic, but it took a lot of time and effort to tell the great ones from the not-so-great ones.

I kept seeing the same message from parents: ‘this is wonderful, but when am I supposed to have the time to look through all of these resources to figure out which ones are right for my family?’

Our goal is to make that easier. We’re also hoping to spread a little bit of extra giggles, sunshine, and stability in a time that can feel scary and unfamiliar. Kids thrive with routine. And as it turns out, so do Kim and I!” The daily podcast, intended for listeners of all ages as well as families, mixes resources and challenges with lighthearted content and listener interaction in each 15-minute episode.

“There’s always some humor, whether it’s the joke or riddle that we tell, or just us having a good laugh with each other,” said Wilkens. “We share a highlight from our day or week which is usually positive, but sometimes it’s about things we are struggling with. We try to share a balance of resources that include online and offline activities. There’s always a creative challenge with a Padlet or social media for listeners to share their creations. At least once a week, we share a resource about the pandemic.”

Morning Meeting is available via Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and Castbox. Listeners are encouraged to tune in each weekday morning, and share the results of the daily challenges. FitzHenry and Wilkens also welcome special guests, so listeners who would like to share on the podcast are encouraged to contact them via their social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram).

“Morning Meeting feels like a way to connect, to teach, and to help,” said FitzHenry. “If learners can’t come to our libraries and labs, we’ll bring it to them!”

In the meantime, the winery’s website store is the place to order for curbside pickup or SML delivery.

Because a country drive is a risk-free tonic for the soul, you could first head to Hickory Hill Winery in Bedford County for a curbside pickup of some Smith Mountain Lake Mist, then drive north 20 miles to Peaks of Otter Winery in Moneta for their Blueberry Jack. Swing southeast along 460, then north up to Afton Mountain Vineyards (motto: “Grapes Don’t Grow in Ugly Places”) and the owners will meet you with a red, a white, a rosé or a “Monticellowineco 3-Pack,” named for the late 19th century cooperative that gave Charlottesville bragging rights as “the Capital of the Wine Belt in Virginia.”

Want more? There is much more to be had here in Central Virginia, even in challenging times. In the midst of a crisis, Virginia’s wineries are keeping customers happy through curbside and door to door deliveries and discounted shipping.

Wine lovers in turn are standing by their favorite local winemakers. Let’s look at a few of their favorites.

Hickory Hill Vineyards & Winery Roger and Judy Furrow, “owners and dreamers” of Hickory Hill, began growing grapes in 1984 but didn’t plant their first commercial vineyard until 1991.

“Prior to that,” says their daughter Wendy Furrow-Scott, “it was all experimental and for fun.” It was, you might say, a lucky accident.

“My dad was in the Air Force, and one day he got tasked with inventorying the wine cellar at the officer’s club. He got intrigued with the wine bottles he was seeing; coming from Southern Virginia, wine was not an everyday thing at his house. So, he started exploring, and being an engineer, starting thinking ‘How can I make that?’ This is a hobby that got out of control!”

By the early 90s the Furrows were selling Chardonnay, Verdot Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and more. Today the wine they call Mist, a slightly sweet blend of Vidal Blanc and Chardonnay, is their flagship white. Another popular bottling is Country Red, a dry, unoaked blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot. For summer sipping they offer Redbud, a sweet pink blush style wine that is a blend of Chardonnay, Vidal Blanc and Merlot.

strong—friends and relations who over the decades helped pick grapes, pour tastings at festivals, bottle the wine or just babysit while the Furrow clan worked.

Over at Peaks of Otter back in 1995, Danny and Shannon Johnson began fermenting fruit—not grapes—in “food grade plastic barrels,” and one their first wines tasted—just a bit—like Dr. Pepper.

Every year now the Shannons make 30 to 35 varieties of fruit wine, with homey names like Chili Dog, Grandmas Apple Pie, and Cinfulicious. Actually, the Chili Dog tastes like hot pepper jelly, or would if the jelly had an alcohol content of 11 percent.

There is no talk of “terroir” on the Peaks website, but then there is no terror when you’re “sitting on the front porch swinging in the swing, drinking pear wine and not worrying bout a thing.” Some wine, and blessed are those who bottle it, is for swirling and sniffing, pondering and comparing to a 1983 Chateau Extraordinaire Petit Neige, similar in structure but with a Virginia Bluebells nose, kinder and gentler tannins, and a long, Irish buttery finish. Other wine is just for sipping and smiling, and Peaks of Otter is where to find it, and good on them too.

Danny’s great grandmother lived up on the Peaks of Otter and made wines.

“In the fall when elderberries and apples got ripe, she fermented her elderberries in apple juice instead of water because she saved on sugar that way,” Danny says.

“Most berries have only 4-7 percent of sugar and apples have 12 -17 percent. It needs to be around 25 percent sugar to get a 13 percent alcohol wine. She did not have money to buy sugar. We use her same recipe today. When berries ripen in the spring and summer, we freeze them and then when apples get ripe in the fall, we start fermenting.”

Besides making wine that is “pleasant and fun,” the folks at Peaks of Otter are on a mission “to be good stewards of the land, the fruit, the community, and the consumer,” and “to make all who come feel special, valued, appreciated and a part of this family farm.”

Elsewhere in Bedford County alone, the curious wine lover can find Ramulose Ridge Vineyards in Moneta, LeoGrande Vineyard and Winery in Goode, and Seven Doors Winery in Huddleston.

In the Commonwealth as a whole in 2018 there were close to 300 wineries, making Virginia eighth in the nation in wine production (2,378,000 gallons), for an economic impact of $5 billion.

No longer striving to mimic France and California, vineyard owners are planting grapes that like it here in Virginia.

Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Viognier and Merlot do especially well, but the full list includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Chambourcin, Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, Malbec, Merlot, Muscat Canelli, Muscat of Alexandria, Norton, Orange Muscat, Petit Manseng, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Rkatsiteli, Sauvignon Blanc, Seyval Blanc, Syrah, Tannat, Touriga Nacional, Traminette, Vidal Blanc, and Zinfandel.

What would Jefferson think to see all the good wineries in Albemarle County today? Al and Cindy Schornberg looked up and down the East Coast for the best place to plant a vineyard, settling on land traversed by Captain Jack Jouett on his famous 1871 ride to warn then Virginia Governor Jefferson and the Virginia Legislature of approaching British troops.

They opened Keswick Vineyards in the year 2000.

Nowadays the Schornberg’s highly praised wines include Cabernet Sauvignons and Cabernet Francs, Chardonnays and Viogniers. Like many vineyard owners in this difficult time, they are using other online platforms like Facebook and YouTube to market and sell their products.

Of course, local winemaking history goes back to the late 18th century and to one celebrated President, statesman, scientist, proto-foodie and (unsuccessful) winemaker. A student of European culture and cuisine who labored to bring Old World sophistication to the New, Jefferson thought that America had the “soil, aspect, and climate of the best wine countries.”

But the vines Jefferson planted in 1774 with Florentine viticulturist Phillip Mazzei were damaged by a rough winter, ravaged by mildew and phylloxera, then trampled by the horses of Hessian soldiers. Despite the backing of George Washington, George Wythe, and the Royal Governor of Virginia, the fledgling Virginia Wine Company came to naught. Though he tried again in 1807, the man who claimed that “good wine is a daily necessity to me” never produced a decent bottle.

After Dennis Horton planted his first vineyard in Madison in 1983, he began searching for grapes best suited to Virginia’s climate. In the Rhone Valley in southern France, Horton discovered the Viognier, whose thick skin and loose clusters made it perfect for our warm and humid summers.
