OUTSIDE INSIDE 7 The next best thing to actually being outdoors? Making certain the view plays prominently from multiple rooms of the house.

POOLS AND POOL HOUSES 13

The outside world

A pool tucked into the hillside, a California-inspired pool house, a patio space for dining near the water— it’s time for adult swim.

PORCHES 19 We’ll never quit a classic Southern porch-sit, but these modern versions are giving the traditional ones a run for their money.

GARDENS AND LANDSCAPES 25 When done right, as these four spaces are, a landscape can provide more than just visual impact—it becomes another room of the home.

Since 2002, Abode has promised readers one thing above all else: an exclusive look at their neighbors’ most beautiful spaces—inside and out. We’ve toured mansions and tiny houses, yurts and yoga studios. But as the weather turns warmer, we’re reminiscing about our favorite spaces beyond a home’s four walls: the pools, landscapes, and porches that extend the living space and offer an opportunity to connect with the great outdoors. We’ve chosen 15 of our favorites from the last 10 years, from a modern zigzag walkway through a county property to a sunny spot for swimming on an antebellum site. Let’s call it a walk down memory lane. VIRGINIA HAMRICK

VIRGINIA HAMRICK

It’s pretty common for architects to speak of “bringing the outside in”—usually via plentiful glass and a toolkit of other tricks. Using those methods and more, these houses are all about bringing the outside inside.

Meeting the eye With light and views as a priority, Washingtonbased architect Robert Gurney arrived at a scheme for this 3,400-square-foot home that would maximize visual contact with the outdoors. The basic design, a trio of pavilions arranged in a U shape, also achieves another major goal: to gracefully designate public and private spaces, allowing for a balance of togetherness C-VILLE ABODE

and separation among the occupants (the couple, their two children, and frequent guests). Each pavilion looks like an iconic house shape, but with rooflines that are deliberately more steeply pitched, tweaking the form that’s most familiar in central Virginia. From a distance, the effect is one of simplicity, with whitepainted cypress siding and a black metal roof

creating a cool, quiet impression. Zooming in, however, the house begins to reveal a richness of detail. The screened porch, for example, is clad in mahogany, making a handsome dark-red accent to the otherwise neutral exterior palette. A glass-enclosed bumpout on the third pavilion makes room for the master bath and adds surprising complexity to the form of the house. 7

Above the clouds The site of this Blue Ridge Parkway home is utterly spectacular: a westward view over the sprawling Shenandoah Valley and the Allegheny Mountains beyond. This is a place where the weather often becomes a panoramic display. When fog settles in the valley, the foothills look like islands poking up through it. With that sort of visual interest outside, says STOA Design + Construction’s Michael Savage, the task was to stay out of the way. Both clients and architects wanted a crisp, simple look for the house that would allow the views to dominate. One means to that end was a tightly limited materials palette. Rich walnut wood plays against dark gray steel, stone, and tile, and otherwise nearly everything is white: walls, trim, ceiling, and counters. The house is conceived as a whole, so that the dark gray floor tile in the master bathroom, for example, echoes the hue of a steel fireplace surround and granite hearth a couple of rooms away.

Capturing the view

ANDREA HUBBELL

Richard and Linda Shank loved their last house, which Richard had designed for them in Ednam Forest. But it had two problems. One was the lack of a view. The other was deer. When they decided to relocate, they searched for a site with views, and found unbeatable vistas at the top of a mountain in Ivy. Shank set to work on a design. Three sides of the courtyard would be formed by the house—a central portion and two wings. Rather than a high wall to mark the fourth side, there is a vanishing-edge pool. The whole house is oriented toward this view: the Blue Ridge to the northwest, a carpet of woods and fields, and the changing sky reflected in the pool. “I wouldn’t want to drive to the top of a mountain and not see anything,” Shank says. The façade of this Rappahannock home was not a starting point, but a sort of organic product engendered by a long, view-driven design process. “We really held off on obsessing about the elevations,” says architect Richard Williams. “It was designed from the inside out. Every space was motivated by the experience and the views, and how it fit into the circulation pattern—those daily rituals.” The aim was that the clients be “somewhat removed from, but utterly immersed in, the viewshed.” So, yes, there are big windows: notably, floor-to-ceiling painted steel Hope’s windows in the living room and entryways. Through the steelframed glass grids, they gaze on a wildflower meadow, a small river, 11 and wooded foothills.

As temps turn warmer, attention turns outward—to the backyard, that is. These four projects help homeowners embrace the season (and the setting).

Above the bend Named after a curve in the Thornton River that flows past one edge of the farm, River’s Bend came with a large building, about a dozen years old, that combines a horse barn and living quarters under one roof. The pool and guesthouse occupy a spot of high ground which, says landscape architect Todd Shallenberger of Waterstreet Studio, is more dramatic than it seems from the main house. “It appears like a knoll, but when C-VILLE ABODE

you get over here you can hear the river, and when you stand on the edge, you experience it as a bluff,” he says. “It’s a powerful landscape.” Waterstreet’s first project for the owners was to restore a third of a mile of riverfront. Meanwhile, architect Adams Sutphin was working on initial plans for the guesthouse. Shallenberger designed a Western red cedar pergola that centers on the pool’s long axis.

Materials were an important aspect of the discussions between Shallenberger and the client. One lucky break was gaining access to a fallen stone wall on an adjoining property. There was enough stone to face most of the guesthouse and to construct new walls around the pool and pergola. Standing-seam metal roofing recalls barn roofs, as does white oak board-and-batten siding, and reclaimed beams hold up the cathedral ceiling inside. 13

The perfect porch The house had generous outdoor living space from the start—a patio with a pergola and a fireplace. Yet this proved to be a hot place for summertime dinners, and as the owners looked ahead to a pool and pool house project—which they’d always known they would add someday—they wanted to include a shadier dining area. Architect Bob Gray sited the poolhouse to one side of the wide lawn that spills out from the house. The pool, lying parallel to the house, differentiates the lawn into various outdoor

rooms—and the pool house interior feels like one of them. Inside, designer Kathy Heiner placed four chairs made from woven seat belt straps and a green ottoman on casters, all of them easy to move for different occasions. A purple bar unit with a brushed aluminum top can also be rolled indoors or out. “They wanted a garden pavilion that was very accessible to the outdoors,” says Gray, who specified folding glass doors that can open two sides of the pool house completely.

A house that’s been standing since before the Civil War can demand a lot of attention from its owner. Such was the case with this Free Union gem that, despite its ample size, had just one bathroom when the owners bought it more than a decade ago. There are nearly 40 acres of open and wooded land stretching from the homesite toward the mountains, and the area near the house includes several vintage outbuildings. Rethinking the outdoor living space was a tricky puzzle, with different advice flowing in from everyone the owners approached. Enter Cabell Cox and The Grow Co., who laid out a plan for the patio and pool surround that would offer some sun protection. “You’ve got this gorgeous view here and that’s the last thing you want to block,” Cox says. An October glory red maple tree, sited just so, shades the outdoor dining table near one corner of the pool, without compromising the vistas. C-VILLE ABODE

Just add water

VIRGINIA HAMRICK

You know you have a special site when you hire a landscape designer and his primary goal is “Don’t mess it up.” That’s what John Meaney told himself when he contemplated the charge from clients, who wanted to add a pool and pool house to their Nelson County property. The 51-acre site is mostly wooded, but from the forest edge the house looks down over an open, sloping field toward a layered mountain vista. To insert anything new into the landscape would be tricky, but the couple wanted a gathering space that was open to the elements. For Meaney, who owns Charlot-

C-VILLE ABODE

tesville-based landscape architecture firm JJM Design, one of the major challenges was to site the new addition in a way that wouldn’t interrupt the views from the house, but would provide a memorable experience for those using the pool, pool house, and hot tub. Ultimately, a site presented itself that is clearly separate from the house and lawn, yet close enough to easily draw people in. “We wanted to sink the house and pool,” he said— meaning they sit a few feet below the natural slope of the hillside. “You feel tucked in a little bit.”

CARTER + BURTON

This may be the South—land of creaky rocking chairs, sweet tea, and fragrant breezes coming off the nearby pasture— but there’s also no dearth of modern spaces from which to capture a view. Here are three of our favorites.

Sublime in its setting What sort of modern house might be at home in a cattle field? That is just one of the many questions illuminated by Churchville’s Elk Run Ridge, designed by Jim Burton for his clients. It is a house that embodies many contradictions. It’s a private retreat that can easily serve as the setting for a gathering of 150. It is the second home of an art dealer that eschews wall space in favor of windows. And it was designed for entertainC-VILLE ABODE

ing. The huge glass doors on both sides of the living area let guests flow in and out onto the porches and from there to the lawn. “The porches are laid out for people to mingle,” says Burton. Circular posts emphasize the height of the porch roofs and match the landscape’s grandeur. Yet the house never feels cavernous. “The scale works for two, or for hundreds of people.” 19

STEPHEN BARLING

Living abroad for decades gives you a special perspective on home. So does waking up every morning to a fantastic view like this one: a panorama of the Alleghenies, the Blue Ridge, and rolling forest and farmland. On a clear day, the furthest point visible is 35 miles away. When imagining the design of their house, these homeowners were set on living outdoors as much as possible, and this suggested to architect Katherine Grove the basic scheme of the house: “three train cars that followed the distinctive curves of the ridge.” Between the garage “car” and the central “car” is a breezeway that invites owners and guests to lounge near an outdoor fireplace and drink in the view. That opening also serves as a frame on part of the view, like a living landscape painting that stops visitors in their tracks upon arrival. The owners say the breezeway is where they spend their best times. A ledgerock fireplace, decorated by a large rock studded with starfish and trilobite fossils, is the focal point. It’s surrounded by Western red cedar siding, which brings warmth to this spot and breaks up the green exterior panels at various other points along the façade. Three seasons a year, the owners are here eating al fresco meals, stargazing, swimming, and lounging by the fire.

The couple was living in Boston when they started looking for an architect to build their house on a mountaintop in Albemarle County. It would have to be a unique design, one that meshed with their reverence for nature and rigorous commitment to personal fitness (he’s a serious hiker and outdoorsman, she’s an avid runner). Both the husband and wife had strong childhood memories of design and architecture that they wanted the home to express. He was born and grew into his teens in Finland, she is Virginia born and bred, a farmgirl who spent much of her youth outside. She recalls summers that included raiding the family garden, picking and eating vegetables fresh off the plants. “One of the things we were attempting to do is connect the materials inside and out,” says architect Patrick Farley. “That’s why you’re surrounded by mostly wood surfaces, and the glass, floor to ceiling, provides a connection to the outdoors and the big trees that you see.” The east-facing rear of the house shows the simplicity of the design, with large windows and a balcony that accomplish exactly that. “It’s not a triumph over nature, it’s a submission,” the husband said.—Joe Bargmann 21

The Great Outdoors

As far as the eye can see

COLE BURRELL

When it comes to your home, there’s plenty of emphasis put on its interior—the décor, the finishes, the systems. But these four spaces paid just as much mind to the outdoors, to beautiful result. Consider us green with envy.

Through the I Nhedge SURANCE SERVICES “An unfolding story” is how one Charlottesville resident describes her collaboration with landscape designer Cole Burrell. That’s apt—their work together had, at the time, logged nine years and counting. But it’s also a fair description of what happens when you walk through the garden. From the street to the rear property line, the landscape here reveals one lovely chapter after another.

Brick walls define the terraces and wide steps lead from one level to another, beckoning one forward. Whereas the landscape near the house is crisp and symmetrical, the woodland garden has dirt walkways curving organically among stands of bamboo and native trees. Rocks cleverly disguise a runoff channel from the nearby road as a pretty little stream. Mosses, ferns, and hellebores draw the eye to ground level, while birdsong laces through the trees overhead.

Garden magic The old saw about real estate—“location, location, location”—also sums up what these homeowners appreciate about their house. They love the neighborhood, Lewis Mountain; they love the landscape that surrounds their home; and they love the spot it occupies in Charlottesville history. Upon entering the front door, one’s gaze immediately continues through French doors onto the patio and the gardens beyond, defined by a small stream that runs from side to side, a few paces off the back porch. “This stream going through is a real focal point for the whole yard,” says gardener Michelle Smith. Contained within stone walls, it’s fringed with many varieties of ferns (royal, lady, ostrich, autumn leaf), plus roses and perennial bulbs like daffodils. These “cover the seasons with different blooms,” says Smith. A stone path leads over a curved bridge and on toward a cottage at the rear of the property, which faces a section of lawn that was once a swimming pool. The homeowners filled it in, creating a flat area edged by a white fence and extensive banks of azaleas. Most of the major plant species in this garden, initially planted 50 to 75 years ago, are timetested classics. Boxwoods line the edge of the porch. Dogwoods, rhododendrons, and azaleas bring spring color to many corners of the yard. “It has old-fashioned appeal,” says Smith.

VIRGINIA HAMRICK

How to bring many layers of history together in one contemporary garden design? Credenhill, a 1938 home in Ivy, had a bit of a pedigree attached to it, in the person of noted designer Charles Gillette. The challenge for the homeowners was integrating the original Gillette design—along with subsequent additions—with the needs of a 21st-century family. Gillette’s design demanded respect not only because of his reputation (in the ’50s, he redesigned the grounds of the Virginia governor’s Executive Mansion, among other commissions), but because of its beauty. Yet some areas of the property remained unimproved, and the area became ripe for reimagining. The result is an oval yard that’s part of a generally symmetrical design, incorporating the original patio along with new terraces, pathways, and plantings. A cutting garden on one side has black dragon Japanese cedar trees in each corner, and flowers such as shasta daisies, coneflower, dahlias, and Siberian iris make for a visual feast from the kitchen. Balancing the cutting garden on the opposite side is an oval garden, with serviceberry, boxwood, and periwinkle. “I borrowed heavily from Gillette’s mix of formal and informal uses of planting,” says landscape architect John James. The first time Abode visited Free Union property Turkey Saddle, it was 2008, and the house had just undergone a major renovation, led by local architecture firm Formwork. It was a serene, minimalist retreat, like a treehouse overlooking the Moormans River. The second time, the vibe had changed a bit. A Formwork-designed garage and guesthouse now sat north of the main house. And embracing it all, on the steep hillside site, was a new landscape design by Anna Boeschenstein of the firm Grounded. “The foremost goal was more outdoor living space, says Boeschenstein. That meant a play lawn above the house, courtyards between its sections, and decking and walkways surrounding the entire complex. Formwork sited new parking and Boeschenstein connected it to the main entrance via a unique zigzag walkway. Made of ipe, it seems to float at one end in an ethereal field of switchgrass, and ties into a large boulder at the other end.

Katherine Kane had always imagined a greenhouse in a certain spot at her magnificent garden at Waterperry Farm in western Albemarle. And not just for sheltering plants. “There are two kinds of greenhouses,” says architect Jeff Bushman, who customized the kit that Kane bought from the English company Alitex. “There are purely service buildings, and then there are those 30

that are really part of the design, and contribute to making spaces.” The Waterperry greenhouse, of course, is one of the latter type. The greenhouse was installed in winter 2017 and already looks like a fully integrated part of the Waterperry vision. Behind it, ever on the lookout for a new place to add a bed, Kane is growing river birch, Japanese iris, sedum, and lavender. C-VILLE ABODE
