Abstract art has the power to move us and shape us just as much as more direct, representational work. Blissful solace can be found swimming through an expanse of Rothko’s fuzzy color. The delicate balance and sturdy order of Mondrian’s work offers a template for a balanced life. After looking at Picasso’s refracted visions, I always walk away seeing the world from an electrifying new perspective.

But for much of the 20th century, as abstract art increased in popularity and esteem, and as the white guys I listed above became household names, exceptional Black artists working with abstract ideas found themselves unable to break in to the mainstream. White curators wanted to see art from Black artists that more explicitly interfaced with Black experience, not experimentation.

The work currently on display at the Jefferson School (page 14) pushes up against that history. The pieces aren’t all purely abstract, as the sculpture on our cover shows. But the experimentation and inventiveness on offer in the exhibition will blow you away, and maybe leave you seeing things from a new angle.—Ben Hitchcock

The Charlottesville Police Department has investigated the Charlottesville Police Department, and found that the Charlottesville Police Department was not guilty of racial profiling in a January incident in which white Officer Joseph Wood detained Black local musician LaQuinn Gilmore by the side of the road. The department’s internal investigation process found that Wood detained Gilmore unlawfully, though the report says the “takedown” move that sent Gilmore to the hospital was executed with legal technique. Gilmore was not charged with any crime before or after the altercation.

On Friday, before the grand jury verdict was released, protesters from Black Lives Matter 757 marched through town calling for racial justice. As the protesters moved through the intersection of 10th and West Main, a truck drove through a red light and hit a woman in a crosswalk. The woman, who was not affiliated with the protest, sustained minor injuries. After the incident, Charlottesville Police Chief RaShall Brackney was critical of the protesters, saying in a statement, “The behaviors exhibited today do not unify the community or keep the community safe.”

The Virginia State Police troopers who shot and killed 18-year-old Xzavier Hill were justified in their actions, ruled a grand jury on Friday. Along with the verdict, the police released dash cam footage of the incident, which protesters and family members had been calling for since news of Hill’s death first broke.

In the footage, Hill can be seen speeding down I-64 before pulling off onto the side of the road after officers began pursuit. Two officers then approached Hill’s car with their guns drawn. It is impossible to tell from the footage what Hill was doing inside the car. Hill was shot before the car door ever opened.

Voter frustration Census delay keeps Albemarle’s gerrymandered districts

A

dedicated few have long tried to slay the gerrymander beast that allows politicians to pick their voters. For nearly 20 years, state Senator Creigh Deeds proposed redistricting reform bills that typically died in subcommittee. In 2013, attorney Leigh Middleditch founded advocacy nonprofit OneVirginia2021 to reform redistricting, an initiative that was seen as a long shot at the time.

But last year, 66 percent of voters approved a constitutional amendment to have district lines drawn by a bipartisan commission. The commission is ready to roll once the 2020 census numbers come in.

There’s the rub.

All hopes of conducting 2021 Virginia House of Delegates elections in newly drawn districts crashed when the Census Bureau announced that redistricting data will not be available until September 30, way too late for Virginia to amend districts before the November elections for state offices.

“It was very disappointing that it was at the mercy of census data,” says Middleditch.

That disappointment is particularly keen in Albemarle County, which is split into four House of Delegates districts and has two state senators. Only one of the six representatives lives in Albemarle.

Sixty-six percent of Albemarle County voted for Joe Biden in 2020, but at the state level the district is represented by four Republicans and two Democrats. Only one of those districts is even remotely competitive—in 2019, five of the six Albemarle pols won their races by at least 19 percent.

“In my ideal world, Albemarle wouldn’t be four [House] districts,” says Albemarle County Democratic Party chair Stephen Davis. “It would be two,” made up of Charlottesville and Albemarle County in two compact districts and communities of interest, key criteria in fair redistricting.

Although Albemarle County has turned blue over the past decade, currently Crozet, Ivy and western Albemarle are sliced off into the 25th District, which includes parts of Augusta and Rockingham counties, represented by Republican Delegate Chris Runion.

Runion says in an email that western Albemarle shares with his Shenandoah Valley constituents the same “transitional position” of being neither high-density urban nor low-density rural, although the district has components of both. Of Crozet, he says, “Overall, I believe we are always more alike than dissimilar.”

The 59th District puts southern Albemarle into a district that stretches south of Lynchburg and is represented by Republican Rustburg resident Matt Fariss.

“Certainly an improvement would be three districts, not four,” says Davis. “The 59th District goes to Campbell County. It

dilutes the Democratic effort in three [Albemarle] precincts.”

And the 59th is not a community of interest, he says. “We don’t even get the same television or radio stations as Lynchburg.”

Just a short walk across the Downtown Mall, the Court Square auction block—which has yet to be replaced by the city, after a white resident threw the original sidewalk plaque into the James River last year—memorializes thousands of enslaved people bought and sold there.

Walkers and runners are encouraged to support the route’s Black-owned restaurants, which are all located in (or nearby) historically Black neighborhoods: Royalty Eats, Mel’s Cafe, Pearl Island Catering, Marie Bette Cafe & Bakery, and Angelic’s Kitchen.

After operating a food truck for two years, Charlottesville native Angelic Jenkins, owner of soul-food eatery Angelic’s Kitchen, opened her first brick and mortar space inside Dairy Market in December. When she found out her new location would be a part of the reparations race, she was proud and honored.

“It’s a little tougher for African Americans to get out there, get a loan, get businesses started, and get the clientele to come in,” says Jenkins, who is known for her fried fish made with a signature seafood breading.

Now more than ever, Jenkins says it’s important to uplift Black-owned businesses.

“In order for us to be successful and grow, we need support,” she says. “We don’t have enough minority-owned businesses around here, and if the younger generation sees that we are continuing to grow, [hopefully] they’re going to say if that person can do it, I can do it too.”

The race begins at the Jefferson School, a Black grade school from 1894 to 1926 that became Charlottesville’s first Black high school until Jackson P. Burley opened in 1951.

After the end of Massive Resistance, the school continued as an integrated junior high.

Following the route map, which explains the historical significance of each stop, participants pass multiple churches, like Pilgrim Baptist and Mount Zion First African Baptist, safe havens and organizing spaces for the Black community since emancipation. The route also passes two of the few recreational areas Black residents had access to under segregation: Booker T. Washington Park and Benjamin Tonsler Park.

In addition to Foster’s former home, several burial grounds and memorials are part of the route, such as Daughters of Zion Cemetery. Established in 1873 near what is now IX Art Park, it is believed to contain more than 600 graves, including important

s I made my way down Jefferson Park Avenue, I felt a sense of familiarity. Just two years ago, I took the bus this way almost every day, praying I would make it to my classes at the University of Virginia on time. But that familiarity faded to sadness once I arrived at my destination: the Kitty Foster Memorial.

While attending UVA, I learned a bit about the oddly shaped metal structure that symbolizes the former home of Catherine “Kitty” Foster. After being freed from slavery in 1820, Foster purchased two acres of land south of the university in a Black community called Canada. She bought the property in 1833, lived there until 1863, and passed the land down to her descendants.

Only now, though, did I realize that Foster, along with 31 other African Americans, was buried in the rolling mounds next to her memorial. For years, I passed their unmarked graves without giving them a second thought.

Foster’s resting place is one of many overlooked facets of local Black history on the Reparations Fun Run/Walk that’s being held during Liberation and Freedom Days, which celebrates the arrival of Union army troops in Charlottesville, and the emancipation of over 14,000 enslaved people on March 3, 1865.

Hosted by the Jefferson School African American Heritage Center, the 9.03-mile race takes participants past more than a dozen Black historical sites, as well as seven Black-owned businesses. The organizers’ goal is to raise $45,000 to support six local Black-led organizations: African American Teaching Fellows, the Jefferson School’s teacher training program, the AlbemarleCharlottesville NAACP’s youth council, Vinegar Hill Magazine’s Black business advertising fund, We Code Too, and 101.3 JAMZ. “We tried to pick [institutions] that were, number one, led by Black people, number two, engaged in their communities, and number three, advancing the city’s desire for equity,” says Andrea Douglas, the Jefferson School’s executive director. “And wanting to do it in a way that’s significant, so that we’re not just putting on a band-aid.”

Participants can complete the race individually, and on their own time. (No pressure to do all nine miles in one day.) Direct donations can also be made on the event’s website.

CAT Recognizes Black Women of Excellence Even though Black History Month may be over, it is always the right time to recognize black women of excellence. This week, we spotlight Evelyn Trice. Evelyn is CAT’s Safety, Security, and Training Officer; however, she started her journey with us as a school bus operator. As an operator, Evelyn always served as a light to others with her smile and vibrant outlook on life. To this day, whenever someone is going through a hard time, she lends a listening ear and reminds us all to have faith in tomorrow.

Though Evelyn once drove a bus every morning and got the chance to impact kids who rode, she now trains all of our new transit drivers, teaching them how to be ready for anything the world throws their way. Just like anyone else in this world, we all have our mountains to climb; our drivers are no exception. Whether it is learning how to communicate with passengers or the stress of driving a big bus through small city roads, Evelyn is there as a mentor and sounding board. Throughout this pandemic, Evelyn and our drivers have played a pivotal role in making sure our riders remain safe.

Next time you see Mrs. Trice, thank her for helping shape the unsung heroes of this pandemic: transit operators. It has not been an easy road for them or any of us, but please remember Evelyn’s message the next time you are faced with hardship: have faith in tomorrow.

ore than 1,300 UVA students have contracted coronavirus this semester. Though cases have declined since last month’s controversial fraternity and sororityCS_SALE-ADS.indd rush events, over 300 students currently have the virus.

Per the university’s coronavirus guidelines, students who live in school-run housing facilities and test positive for the virus are moved to on-campus isolation dorms for 10 days. And those who’ve been in close contact with someone with COVID-19 are put into quarantine housing: an assortment of local hotels. (Students who live offGrounds are required to isolate or quarantine inside their residence. They may also go home if it’s safe to do so, as can onGrounds students.)

From the moment they found out they’d been exposed to the virus, some students report receiving inconsistent communication from the university.

After one of her close contacts tested positive, first-year Zulma Escobar claims that she and four friends (who also had been exposed to the virus) all received different instructions when they contacted Student Health. Though Escobar was advised to get tested the following day, her friends were not tested at all before checking in to their quarantine hotel.

“Sometimes things were just poorly communicated, both to the people trying to help us and to us,” says Escobar.

While students in isolation have roommates, those in quarantine are in rooms by themselves and are not allowed to interact with others. However, these safety guidelines are not always enforced.

At his hotel, first-year Patrick Cloud says he heard students congregating in rooms and hallways, and even smelled marijuana at times. He called the front desk and the

AN ABSTRACT DISCOURSE With history behind it, ‘Charlottesville Collects African American Art’ breaks norms

obert Reed’s “San Romano (Hip Strut)” explodes off the wall of the Jefferson School’s gallery. The bright colors and bold shapes are both abstract and representational—in one corner it’s all color and form, and in another corner there’s a chessboard, a gift from Reed’s son.

Reed attended the Jefferson School as a child in the age of segregation before finding success as an artist and academic. He taught at the Yale School of Art from 1969 until his death in 2014, but he maintained ties to the community throughout his life, keeping a studio here and sitting on the advisory board of Second Street Gallery. Now, his work is on display as part of the Jefferson School African American Heritage Center’s “Charlottesville Collects African American Art” exhibit.

“This exhibition shows what African American artists have been thinking about, and how they’ve been approaching their work, over the last 70 years,” says JSAAHC Executive Director Andrea Douglas.

The show’s 18 works provide a surprisingly indepth survey, revealing what Douglas calls “a dramatic shift in America post-civil rights movement, when Black artists, and Americans in general, began to exist in a more racialized space.”

Reed’s work shows the tension at the heart of that evolution, as Black artists struggled to find success in the world of abstract art. Though the art establishment in the late 20th century sought abstract work, it also sidelined Black modernists because of their race. Meanwhile, these artists were repudiated by members of their own community for their emphasis on aesthetics rather than narrative.

“At the heart of this exhibition is the discourse of aesthetics versus race,” says Douglas. “It began with Alain Locke and W.E.B. Du Bois in the 1920s, James

Porter in the ’40s, and then, in terms of the visual arts, it came to a head in 1971, with a show entitled ‘Contemporary African American Art’ at the Whitney Museum in New York City, and a second show in Houston, Texas, called ‘The DeLuxe Show.’” The early ’70s saw Black artists “articulating what it is that they understand to be their role and place in the larger American conversation,” says Douglas.

The Whitney mounted “Contemporary African American Art” in response to calls for more representation in museums from a group of artists called the Black Emergency Cultural Coalition. But as the exhibit went up, two points of contention emerged.

The BECC were upset that the show had been scheduled for the spring, rather than the more prestigious winter months. The coalition also felt

The Whitney hadn’t consulted enough experts in Black art about the selection of works. The BECC called for a boycott of the show, and 15 of the 75 artists on display withdrew their work.

Meanwhile, down in Texas, “The DeLuxe Show” was formed and presented in a remodeled movie theater as the first fully integrated show of its kind.

The exhibition featured exclusively aesthetically based abstract art. The artists, regardless of their race, were presented on equal footing.

Standing next to Reed’s work at the Jefferson School is a sculpture by renowned abstract artist Sam Gilliam, one of the artists whose work was on display at “The DeLuxe Show,” and one of the 15 who withdrew from the Whitney following the BECC boycott.

Placing Gilliam’s piece next to Reed’s was “a really important gesture,” says Douglas. The two were friends and their approach to color and strong geometric forms is similar.

Reed isn’t the only artist featured in the show who attended the Jefferson School. Brothers Henderson “Bo” Walker and Frank Walker, and their friend Gerry Mitchell, were students there too, making the exhibition a reunion of sorts.

Moving around the room, two lithographs by Richard Hunt also stand out. Hunt is a prolific sculptor with over 125 public commissions to his name. His affinity for working in three dimensions is obvious here in the assemblage of bone-like objects, some flat,

In the Charlottesville exhibition, his “Concrete (Tall #7)” creeps up on you, revealing its power incrementally. Gilliam uses concrete as his surface, silk screening the ink onto the overlapping, wafer-thin planes. It’s an interesting pairing—the obdurate weightiness of the concrete contrasting to the color, which at the upper part of the work, appears almost vaporous. Down below, threedimensional drips and ridges of pigment add additional materiality, and impart visual heft.

Gilliam uses copper wire to stitch together the planes, the copper is dull, so it doesn’t scream at you, but the chain-like stitches are so beautifully done, it’s clear they transcend their function to become a player within the composition. Jazz inspires Gilliam, and there’s a musical quality to

some rendered with volume, producing a striking sculptural effect. The earthy browns and grays punctuated by a pop of yellow strikes just the right note of stylish restraint.

Alison Saar’s “Black Bottom Stomp” draws on West African art and imagery. The title references Jelly Roll Morton’s 1925 jazz composition of the same name, so there’s a back and forth going on between West Africa and America. Saar’s images—the female figure, the moon, and also the title and the colors— present clues that resonate with the viewer.

If you’ve been to the Times Square subway station, you might recognize Jacob Lawrence’s “Transit I and II.” The sketches are the silkscreen models for a mosaic mural commissioned by the New York City Transit Authority for the busy station. “Transit I” depicts a subway car with riders holding onto poles. In “Transit II,” the subject shifts to a bus crowded with riders.

Lawrence uses a reduced palette of handsome earth tones that resemble collaged pieces of paper. With his jerky, jangly shapes and figures, he conveys the movement of train and bus and the press of humanity within them. He also adds recognizable touches—a briefcase, a long strand of sausages links, rosary beads for a potential subway proselytizer—to point out the range of transit patrons. With their flattened space and flat blocks of color, the compositions come across as abstract/figurative hybrids.

“We could write a very good history of photography between a Gordon Parks, a Carrie Mae Weems, and a Hank Willis Thomas, in terms of developing a conceptual idea about what photography has the potential to speak about,” says Douglas, referring to three photographs in the show. “Gordon Parks was sent to Alabama right after the bus boycott with the intention of documenting life in the South for Black people. He went to one of the poorest areas, met a sharecropper, Willie Causey and his family, and then documented that family in a series that appeared in Time magazine.

Parks was approaching it from an aesthetic position, but he was also interested in describing Black poverty in the midst of the civil rights movement as a way of creating empathy for these people.”

The Weems’ photograph is from her “Kitchen Table Series,” which consists of 20 images of Weems, her romantic partner, her child, and her mother positioned around her kitchen table. Below an ever-present and distinctive overhead light fixture, the people in the photographs are caught in the ordinary moments of a woman’s life. Dating to 1990, the “Kitchen Table Series” established Weems’ reputation. The series is remarkable because it focused on a Black family at a time when so much contemporary art exhibited in museums and galleries did not. And while the subject of the series is a Black woman, the images also possess a universality that transcends race and gender.

Hank Willis Thomas’ haunting color photograph, “Strange Fruit,” depicts a muscular Black man wearing shorts and Nike sneakers in midair, slam dunking a basketball through a noose. “Looking at the image, you can see Thomas is thinking about the role of commodity and Black bodies,” says Douglas. “Embedded within the image also is the history of violence against Black bodies, the ways in which sports has become a road out of poverty, the importance of Nike as a brand and, therefore, the branding of that body with the racist, capitalist discourse that that can engender. …All of those things are there.”

The University of Virginia Art Museum, where Douglas was once a curator, used to mount a recurring show, “Charlottesville Collects,” which focused on local collections. Those collections overwhelmingly belonged to white people and featured white artists. So it was important for Douglas to present a show that shifted the emphasis to Black artists.

“Charlottesville Collects African American Art” reveals a wealth of that art in this community.

Zen years

ust 10 days after opening Now & Zen in 2011, chef/owner Toshi Sato’s hometown on the east coast of Japan was struck by a devastating tsunami. The disaster in Kesennuma was dubbed the Great East Japan Earthquake, and the seismic activity destroyed large parts of the region, spilling fuel from the town’s fishing fleet, which caught fire and burned for four straight days.

“It was such a chaotic moment,” says Toshi, “I couldn’t reach anybody for multiple weeks, and, as the restaurant had just opened, I was having to work day and night.

Fortunately, all my family and friends were okay and they still live there in Kesennuma.”

It was a difficult and uncertain time for Sato, but he persevered by focusing on his new restaurant and connecting with the community by creating food that he loved.

A decade later, Now & Zen is a successful, beloved Charlottesville restaurant, and Sato finds himself once more calling on

his resilience during another disaster—the COVID-19 pandemic.

Despite unexpected challenges, Sato considers himself fortunate to have realized a lifelong dream of bringing his culinary creativity to his own restaurant. The chef was in graduate school studying constitutional law when he realized that wasn’t his true calling, so he transferred to a Japanese cooking school. After a few years apprenticing in Tokyo restaurants, he emigrated to Charlottesville in 1987 and, through a mutual friend, was introduced to Ken Mori of Eastern Standard Catering.

Together they opened Tokyo Rose, where Toshi spent seven years refining his skills. Sato then joined the kitchen staff at Keswick Hall, where he stayed for 17 years before striking out on his own to open Now & Zen. Sato says that in Charlottesville he’s found an encouraging and vibrant culinary community that helped him foster his talent and passion for traditional

If not for the current pandemic, Now & Zen chef/owner Toshi Sato would be planning a party to celebrate the restaurant’s 10th anniversary this month. Instead, he and his staff will continue to offer limited, socially distanced indoor dining and takeout.

Japanese cooking. “I love my job and living near nature,” he says. “I didn’t even think about moving to another place.”

And foodies keep coming back to Sato’s place for his adventurous signature dishes, such as the tuna carpaccio, a green salad topped with thinly sliced tuna, and a citrus-wasabi vinaigrette, and the aburi salmon, a sweet and spicy seared salmon nigiri prepared with maple-soy glaze, cracked black pepper, and fresh jalapeños.

“Our menu is so different compared to other Japanese restaurants,” says Sato. “I hope I can keep creating interesting and original dishes.”

Employee Brian Moon, says it’s Sato’s life experience that makes him, “the best boss I’ve ever had, a great person. …From coming to Charlottesville from Japan decades ago, working in various restaurants, to eventually starting a successful establishment, I think his story is wonderful.”

And clearly, Sato is on a roll.

Will Overman has a knack for songwriting. During his undergraduate years at the University of Virginia, he spent weekends touring up and down the East Coast with his collective, the Will Overman Band. After graduation, the members went their separate ways, and Overman dropped a solo EP, Crossroads.

Now Overman is back with a follow-up: his solo full-length debut, The Winemaker’s Daughter. A poignant portrait of the joys and hardships experienced on the road to adulthood, the album’s

nine songs serve as vignettes of milestones in Overman’s own life. The title track revolves around his wedding day, while “Living Wage” outlines the trials of making ends meet as an artist. Overman’s mastery of the folk tradition is present throughout, as each song brims with the touchstones of Americana: banjo, harmonica, and keys.

From The Sally Rose Band to Shagwüf, Charlottesville mainstay Sally Rose has lent her talent to an array of musical lineups throughout her career. With these projects, she’s honed her rock ’n’ roll chops, shedding the folk influence inherent to our region for the riff-laden, fuzzed-out, and danceable. Prompted by the solitude and reflection afforded by quarantine, Rose returns to her roots for Tread Light, her first solo release in a decade. It’s a savvy choice for a musician who’s done it all—and Rose shines with the stripped-back arrangement.

One of the album’s standouts, “Sleepwalking” is a pop romp, while tracks like “Ragweed” and “Bittersweet” are pure, feel-good Americana. Her friend and fellow central Virginia musician, Erin Lunsford, guests on banjo on the latter, while Devon Sproule lends a hand on John Prine’s “Sum-

mer’s End,” and Alethea Leventhal (Ships In The Night) sits in on a rendition of Mazzy Star’s “Fade Into You.” These dreamy covers round out the album’s robust sound, making Tread Light a welcome addition to the local canon.

Aries (March 21-April 19): In late April of 1969, Cambridgeshire hosted the first-ever Thriplow Daffodil Weekend: a flower show highlighting 80 varieties of narcissus. In the intervening years, climate change has raised the average temperature 3.24 degrees Fahrenheit. So the flowers have been blooming progressively earlier each year, which has necessitated moving the festival back. The last pre-COVID show in 2019 was on March 23-24, a month earlier than the original. Let’s use this as a metaphor for shifting conditions in your world. I invite you to take an inventory of how your environment has been changing, and what you could do to ensure you’re adapting to new conditions.

Taurus (April 20-May 20): Author Leo Buscaglia told us that among ancient Egyptians, two specific questions were key in evaluating whether a human life was well-lived. They were “Did you bring joy?” and “Did you find joy?” In accordance with your current astrological potentials, I’m inviting you to meditate on those queries.

Your ideas are fine. Your rational mind is a blessing. But for the foreseeable future, what you need most is to deepen your relationship with your emotions. Study them, please. Take in a lecture, an exhibition, a musical soiree or jam session. There may be precious few events happening in a crowd right now, but there are plenty waiting to happen in your living room and (sooner than seems possible when the cold wind blows) on your front porch or back patio.

Yes, Virginia, there are old-fashioned, pre-pandemic style events going on this spring, and we’ll mention them too, but let’s not overlook and disparage the cornucopia of “virtual” but completely real delights to be enjoyed from the comfort of home.

Monticello itself—the home, the estate, the lovely mountaintop setting—is operating under winter hours. Guests will find enhanced safety measures and a redesigned, family-friendly experience with lots of outdoor events. Tickets may be purchased online.

Monticello also offers periodic livestreams. On Friday, March 12 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m., Chef David Bastide will teach a class on French brasserie fare, with Poulet à l’Estragon (Tarragon Chicken) as the main dish.

Bastide will use ingredients grown and harvested from Monticello’s gardens.

Guests can cook alongside the chef from their own homes, learning to prepare an authentic French meal. Prior to class, participants will receive preparation instructions, including a shopping list, recipes, and menu with wine pairing suggestions.

Though still not old enough to enlist he embarks on a treacherous mission to find him and bring him home.

In addition to live actors, this powerful drama features life-size puppets by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company, who bring breathing, galloping, charging horses to thrilling life on stage. The broadcast will be repeated on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.

Staunton Music Festival Over in Staunton, the Staunton Music Festival, 10 days of chamber music by an international cast that would be an ornament to any city, is preparing to present in-person concerts this August.

In the next few weeks the Festival will unveil a redesigned website and announce this year’s programs: 15 events that will respect “continuing health concerns from COVID-19 and offer exciting first steps to RESTART Classical,” integrating old and beloved compositions with provocative and explorative contemporary pieces.
