This month, Amazon’s founder Jeff Bezos will travel to space. His rocket, New Shepard, will launch from Van Horn, Texas, and shoot 62 miles above the surface of the Earth, 55 miles higher than a normal commercial airplane. The rocket’s engine will jettison and steer itself to a landing pad, while the passenger cabin parachutes gently down into the West Texas desert.

The whole thing will take 10 minutes. Bezos’ team says it’s the first step toward commercial space travel; a ticket on the inaugural voyage cost $28 million at auction. Southwest this is not.

I understand the allure of space travel. The thrill of exploration, the spectacle of it all, the lifelong shift in perspective that astronauts describe after having seen our pale blue dot from afar. Still, as many have pointed out, it’s galling to see Bezos, the richest man in the world, embark on such an elaborate vanity project when there’s so much else going wrong closer to home. I mean, an underwater pipeline incident literally lit the ocean on fire this week—is this really the best time for sightseeing? (“I’d rather go to Italy,” said our copy editor, Susan, when asked if she’d like to go to space.

I think she’s right. I’ve seen those astronaut rations. The food is better in Tuscany.)

In this week’s cover story (p. 15), we catch up with acclaimed Nelson County journalist and author Earl Swift, whose book about the moon rover missions of the early ’70s has just hit shelves. The book is called Across the Airless Wilds, a title that encompasses some of the drama and danger of journeying through extra-terrestrial environments. Bezos and his billionaire friends are about to launch themselves off into those wilds. For the rest of us, reading will just have to do.—Ben Hitchcock

Bagels go back to basics

Money set aside for statue disposal City Council is set to hold a special meeting on July 7, in which it plans to set aside $1 million for “removal, storage, and/or covering” of the downtown statues of Stonewall Jackson and Robert E. Lee, as well as the Ridge Street statue of Sacagawea, Meriwether Lewis, and William Clark.

Council resolved to remove the Ridge Street statue in 2019, and voted to remove the Confederate monuments last month.

According to 2020 laws regarding the removal of war memorials, the City Council can do whatever it wants with the Confederate statues beginning July 7.

Not so fast Since December of 2019, Charlottesville police officers have been scooting around the Downtown Mall on three-wheeled Segway SE-3 Patrollers. Do the Segways prevent crime?

Fair question, though it seems that’s not the vehicles’ purpose. The police department released its annual report last month, which said, “Our new Segways are mostly used on the Downtown Mall as a community engagement tool.”

According to Segway, each SE-3 Patroller costs $12,999. The vehicles have a 15-mileper-hour top speed. Anyone interested in evading the “community engagement tools” should try running up a hill—the Segways can climb a 15-degree slope at the steepest.

A host of new laws went into effect on July 1, including a rule banning skill games from Virginia. The gambling-adjacent slot machines had become popular in convenience stores around the state and in Charlottesville.

A group of Norfolk business owners unsuccessfully filed a lawsuit challenging the ban, reports Norfolk’s WAVY-TV 10. Meanwhile, five cities around the commonwealth are in the process of setting up full-scale casinos, after a rule change in 2019 gave select localities permission to do so.

The touchless drive-thru system worked smoothly, complete with handheld credit card scanners and radio headsets.

The staff braved all kinds of bad weather, and no Charlottesvillian had to miss their Deli Egg or Cleo salad.

While it seemed like the new model would be a keeper, Smith says it was always temporary. “I know that a lot of people love the drive-thrus, but we’re told that our by-right use of them lapsed years ago with changes to zoning law, and we’ve been running them on the basis of an agreement with the city that we would return to our in-store model soon after all COVID restrictions have been lifted in the city.”

Smith promises that it’s better on the inside, and he sees his customers as more than just a number on a printed ticket.

“Apart from any issue of by-right use, we are simply faster and better inside, but we also really just miss having people in,” he says. “Seeing people is part of the idea.”

Bodo’s returned to in-store counter service on Monday, abandoning a drive-thru system that the famous local bagel chain had been operating at its Preston Avenue and Emmet Street locations since last May, when the onset of the coronavirus pandemic made going inside the bustling restaurants a no-go.

“We’ve had to wait to do this until it was alright for people to be standing as close together as they do in our line, but we’re now at the point where this should be safe if everyone is masked,” reads a post on the store’s Facebook page announcing the change. “We’re very grateful to all of you for helping us make our drive-thrus work as well as they did.”

Making the jump away from counter service was a natural choice: Both stores were already equipped with drive-thru windows. The Emmet Street shop was originally a Bob Evans and the Preston location had been a Rob Roy. “We are literally the only restaurant in the city that had an unused drive-thru,” says Bodo’s co-owner Scott Smith.

Early results

Representative Bob Good took office at the beginning of the year.

Good has voted with President Joe Biden just 3 percent of the time over the last six months, placing him among the most conservative quarter of the Republican caucus.

Good himself has refused to disclose whether he’s gotten vaccinated.

The representative’s disdain for pandemic safety measures comes as no surprise— during a Trump rally in December, Good praised the maskless crowd for knowing “that this is a phony pandemic.” The coronavirus had killed nearly 300,000 people in

the U.S. at the time, including more than 300 in the 5th District.

Last month, Good made headlines again when he peppered Education Secretary Miguel Cardona with questions about critical race theory during a virtual House hearing. While Good pushed Cardona to ensure the federal government would not challenge state laws banning the teaching of critical race theory, New Jersey Democratic Representative Donald Norcross’ screen popped up, and someone shouted “racist!”

Next year, Good will already have at least one challenger. Last month, Brunswickbased farmer Kimberly Lowe announced that she’s running for the 5th District seat.

However, she seems to agree with Good on some things—protecting Second Amendment rights and ensuring election integrity are two of her top priorities.

Choosing to Buy Local

rom the very beginning of his campaign, 5th District Representative Bob Good has identified himself as a Trump-loving, Bible-thumping hardcore conservative. He opposes LGBTQ+ equality and abortion rights. He is hard on immigration and asylum seekers. He loves guns and police.

Good is now six months into his two-year term.

Thus far, the votes he’s cast and legislation he’s introduced have reflected his state priorities, though none of the 19 bills he’s introduced have made it through their committees.

In a controversial drive-thru convention last June, Good—a former Campbell County supervisor, Liberty University athletics fundraiser, and a wrestling coach—defeated former Representative Denver Riggleman, accusing him of not being conservative enough after Riggleman officiated a gay wedding in 2019. Good went on to beat Democrat Dr. Cameron Webb in November by about five points.

In January, Good kicked off his term by formally rejecting the results of the 2020 presidential election, joining eight Republican senators and more than 100 Republican representatives in accusing the Democrats of committing massive election fraud and stealing the race from Trump. (Federal and state judges have found no evidence supporting these claims.) Right after the January 6 attack on the Capitol, Good continued to push for the exclusion of several states won by Democrats from the Electoral College tally.

More recently, Good voted against creating a federal commission to investigate the insurrection, and awarding the Congressional Gold Medal to the law enforcement officers who defended the Capitol. During the attack, over 140 officers were injured.

One later died from his injuries, and two died by suicide.

Over the past six months, Good has continuously voted against legislation pro-

posed by Democrats, including bills prohibiting discrimination based on sex, gender identity, and sexual orientation; expanding voting, unionization, and collective bargaining rights; requiring background checks for all gun sales; creating a path to citizenship for DREAMERS; providing people detained while entering the country with legal counsel; making Washington, D.C., a state; protecting pregnant and older employees from workplace discrimination; and providing contraceptives to veterans without co-pays.

Good has voted with President Joe Biden just 3 percent of the time over the last six months, according to FiveThirtyEight’s congressional tracker. That places him among the most conservative quarter of the Republican caucus. The only vote Good and the President have agreed on is a bill to repeal the 2002 authorization of military force in Iraq.

In the wake of increased violence against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, Good also refused to support the COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act, which aims to make reporting hate crimes easier. And following last year’s protests against police brutality and systemic racism, he voted down the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, which intends to increase accountability for law-enforcement misconduct.

Good’s 19 bills have included banning the use of federal funds for the Central American Minors Program; treating silencers the same as firearms accessories; requiring that schools disclose negotiations with teacher unions to receive relief funds; preventing states and local jurisdictions from interfering with worship services; and outlawing asylum for migrants who have been convicted of a crime.

Good has also gotten cozy with fellow far-right conservatives like QAnon conspiracy theorist Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene. He joined Taylor Greene’s calls to fire Dr. Anthony Fauci and her protests against the House’s mask mandate.

Books are back

“W

e have a book town,” says Peter Manno, manager of the Friends of the Jefferson-Madison Regional Library. The group is excited to welcome community members into the former Northside Library building this weekend, for the first book sale Friends of JMRL has held since the onset of the pandemic last year. “The sales are a big part of people’s lives,” Manno says.

Friends of JMRL is a nonprofit organization that helps financially support the library system, and also manages the Books Behind Bars program, which ships requested books to incarcerated individuals throughout the commonwealth.

Friends supports its mission through giant, biannual book sales that can bring in as much as $120,000. The sales have become a community staple over the years.

Manno says he knows one volunteer who went to her first book sale in 1965, when she was in high school, and has been to every sale since.

Like everyone else, Friends of JMRL had to get creative when COVID shut everything down. The lockdown came right before its spring 2020 sale. “We were poised to have a sale,” Manno says. “We were full, we had our books out on the shelves ready to go, and had to close the doors and not have volunteers, not be taking donations.”

They did hold COVID-safe bag sales, where people could drive up and get a bag of five books for $5. They had some success, but the modified events couldn’t match the genuine article. “It was something to do and it was real good for us,” Manno says. “[We] moved some books, saw some folks.”

Book donations reopened in November, and the organization was inundated right away. The group reached out to the Albemarle Square landlords, who gave them the old Northside Library space for book storage. (In the past, the sales have been held in Gordon Avenue Library basement.)

This weekend’s warehouse sale, the first of its kind, will take place at 300 Albemarle Square Shopping Center on July 9-11 from 10am-6pm each day. It will be limited to 80

Friends of the Jefferson-Madison Regional Library is holding a warehouse book sale July 9-11, from 10am-6pm each day.

shoppers at a time, and most of the books will range in price from $1-$3.

For repeat customers of the spring or fall sales, this warehouse sale will be a bit different. There will be no members’ preview night, and rare and specialist books will not be on shelves. “It’s going to be about 20 percent or less the size of our normal spring or fall sale,” Manno says. “It’s really a summer warehouse, general readers sale.”

If this weekend goes well, and COVID continues to fade into the background, the Friends of JMRL hope to have a full fall sale in early

October. “We’re really hoping it can be as normal as pre-COVID as possible,” Manno says.

Book donations have been suspended until July 15 in preparation for the warehouse sale, but beginning July 15, you can drop books off on the lower level of the Gordon Avenue Library. Once the regional library system is completely up and running again, donations will be accepted at any of the libraries.

“We’re just looking forward to getting back to doing what we do,” says Manno. “See old friends, and some new friends.”

Housing advocates push for more protections as eviction moratorium nears end or accept the funds, they don’t have to,” says Caroline Klosko, a housing attorney for the Legal Aid Justice Center.

A few key state protections remain in place, though.

Through the end of September, renters facing eviction can request a 90-day continuance of their case if they can prove they were unable to pay their rent due to the pandemic. Until July 1, 2022, landlords must also give

tenants two weeks—instead of five days—to make a missed payment. And landlords who own more than four units must offer payment plans for late rent.

Virginians are still able to apply for rent relief from the state.

Because some tenants have struggled to access that program, LAJC is hiring someone to assist local residents with their applications over the next few months.

Despite these efforts, Klosko expects to see a “vast increase” in evictions in the area when the CDC moratorium expires at the end of the month.

In the coming months, DSA and LAJC hope Charlottesville gets its right-to-counsel program, approved by City Council in April, up and running.

Though City Manager Chip Boyles said the new program— which would provide lawyers for low-income households facing eviction, significantly increasing their chance of staying in their homes—will be paid for by American Rescue Plan funds (the process for distributing those funds is not yet underway).

“The next challenge is to try to get Albemarle [County] to pass something similar,” says Campbell. “That seems like it’s going to be a little bit more of an uphill battle.”

In the meantime, Klosko encourages residents who receive an eviction notice to contact LAJC as soon as possible.

“Even some of the larger complexes...have started filing for evictions for people who owe less than a month’s rent,” he adds. “It seems like they’re really going to go hard after people.”

Now that the state of emergency is over, landlords no longer have to apply for rent relief on behalf of their tenants, don’t have to notify their tenants about available rent relief programs, and are allowed to initiate eviction proceedings more quickly.

They also no longer have to wait 45 days after they (or their tenant) apply for relief to proceed with an eviction.

Over the last year, thousands of Virginia renters have been able to stay in their homes thanks to a variety of eviction prevention measures, including a statewide rent relief program.

But on July 1, Governor Ralph Northam lifted Virginia’s state of emergency, which spells the end for some of those protections. And on July 31, the Center for Disease Control’s nationwide ban on evictions will permanently expire.

“We’ve definitely seen an uptick lately in the [eviction] filings,” says Brian Campbell, co-chair of Charlottesville Democratic Socialists of America’s housing justice committee. “I don’t know if that’s because landlords were anticipating the end of the moratorium and went ahead and started filing.

Earl Swift turns his eye for detail to space travel

The moon is covered in fine dust, an endless desert of gray particles that smear when disturbed in the breezeless atmosphere. When the Apollo 15 mission landed there in 1971, the astronauts found that the dust meant danger for them and the brand-new rover they’d brought. The moon dirt worked its way into the seals of the astronauts’ helmets and gloves, making them difficult to remove. Dirt coated the instrument panels of the rovers, making them nearly impossible to read. Fine dirt lined the angled walls of the moon’s craters—if the rover slid into a crater, there’s no guarantee that it would ever make it out. On Earth, the astronauts had been swaggering cowboys, but on the moon, they moved slowly, crossing the barren expanse one dust particle at a time.

Swift’s eye for fine, granular detail is a hallmark of his writing. In his latest work, the esteemed Nelson County journalist and author turns that passion for detail to space.

Across the Airless Wilds: The Lunar Rover and the Triumph of the Final Moon Landings tells the story of Apollo missions 15, 16, and 17, which took place in 1971 and 1972 and saw three moon rovers wheel across the lunar surface.

Even chatting in a cozy coffeehouse in Crozet, Swift can conjure the vastness and loneliness of space travel. “Forget about interplanetary colonization,” he says, “lunar colonization might not be practical.” The Apollo 17 mission took the rover as far as any human has ever gone, he says. As he writes it: “Here they’d leave humankind’s outermost footprints.”

Swift’s earlier books and magazine articles describe more terrestrial, but perhaps equally dramatic, environments—the sinking Tangier Island (Chesapeake Requiem, A Year with the Watermen of Vanishing Tangier Island, on many Best Book of 2018 lists); points where native Americans and then colonists aimed to prosper along the James River (Journey on the James); and the beauty and the beastliness of America’s interstate highway system (The Big Roads). There’s also a book about a risky sojourn to locate, identify, and honor the remains of a crew of a U.S. helicopter downed in Laos (Where They Lay) and the tale of one ’57 Chevy told through the many stories of its owners (Auto Biography).

Swift, 62, keeps his feet on the ground nowadays. He starts almost every day with a five-mile hike on the Appalachian Trail, which is near his house. Sometimes he strolls out to a protected ledge on the trail and scribbles away before returning home to write through the evening. Don’t be fooled by the steady routine: He hasn’t been to the moon, but he’s been just about everywhere else.

As a kid, his father’s job with Firestone tires took the family all around the country. Swift inherited a “geeky appreciation for cars,” he says, learning to tell the difference between a Chevy and a Pontiac based on design elements from year to year, and taking joy in the numbering scheme of the North American highway system. His father was also a huge aviation fan, and by the time Swift was 11 he could identify nearly every commercial airliner.

The fascination with cars remains: Swift has owned “six or seven” convertibles, he says, and he whizzes around town in a Miata MX-5. “A two-seater forces you to make decisions

about what’s important to you—and who’s important to you,” he says. “You have to be careful about how much you pack, and you can only bring one other person with you.”

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Swift doesn’t shy away from technical details in describing the moon missions. When he talks about the moon rover’s drive train, his voice speeds up with excitement. Each wheel was powered by a device that produced just 1/4 horsepower per wheel, or one horsepower for the whole lunar rover. (A Prius has 121 horsepower.)

“The transmission for each wheel was made of just three parts and only two of those moved,” Swift says. “It violates all of your suppositions about a transmission.”

The rover weighed 460 pounds on Earth, but much less on the moon. When a Velcro clasp in a cord would not open up easily, one astronaut nearly picked up the entire rover by accident.

Up there, instant invention was a constant necessity. When a fender broke off the rover, the Apollo 17 team used U.S. Geological Survey maps bound with duct tape to shape a makeshift fender that lasted long enough to let the scheduled work continue.

In his younger days, before settling in Nelson to hike, write, and tinker with his automobiles, Swift traveled widely. Everywhere he’s been triggers vivid and fond memories. When he moved to Alaska in 1984 for a job at the Anchorage Times, the Last Frontier State was just right for him.

“There was a boomtown feel about the whole state. Money was everywhere and cocaine was a terrible problem in Anchorage. Organized crime was a terrible problem, too,” Swift recalls. It was “one of the most dangerous places to live in the United States, per capita, but boy, what a great place to be a reporter.”

He adjusted to wild Alaskan life. “If you’re not at the top of the food chain, you have to have a gun,” but he quickly adds, “It’s the kind of place, if you see a motorist broken down by the side of the road, you have to stop.”

After Alaska, Swift worked for the Virginian-Pilot from 1987 to 2008. Recalling his days at Norfolk’s daily newspaper, he kvells. “One of the best newspapers in the country, story for story. Best job in the world,” he says. The Batten family, who owned the paper at the time, “had installed really smart,

hard-thinking management who had hired exceptionally well from top to bottom. It was a writer’s newspaper.”

The paper liked him, too, and granted leaves of absence to write books, some developed from his newspaper work.

In 1998, Swift took a 22-day sojourn on the James in a canoe, and returned with 22 dispatches from the wilderness.

From his campsites, he wrote on a Tandy 1000 computer that “gave you one line of text as you typed, so you had to remember what you had typed.” The project was a big hit, and UVA approached him about becoming a Virginia Humanities fellow, a position he still holds.

His Virginian-Pilot work also took him to Tangier Island, the isolated crabbing village in Virginia’s Chesapeake Bay. He wrote a few stories about the island’s local life before convincing his editors that the real story was about the water creeping

over the island’s shores and not receding. When Swift returned to the island in 2016 to work on his book, he says he was “completely floored” to see how much more of the Tangier land mass had gone under water. “Tangier is a test case that announces we have got a problem,” he says. “Respond as you will, but how you respond will say much about how we are going to get through this problem—or not.”

After his years in Norfolk, where he enjoyed the beach and bay life immensely, he now enjoys the trees along the mountains in Nelson County. He’s proud to have raised his daughter from age 11, with the support of “the proverbial village of friends and relatives,” he says. “Looking back, I think there were far fewer challenges along the way than there were rewards. She reordered my whole existence. She introduced me to true joy, pride, worry, and more joy.”

Swift takes about two years to write a book, and says his next project is already underway. He assures that his next book will be as different from Across the Airless Wilds as that book is from Chesapeake Requiem. Swift has to sell his next project, one he’s been working on for a decade. Much of the research is done, but he will not divulge the subject. “I won’t jinx it,” he declares.

Like in his previous work, he’ll try to become“the expert” on his new subject.

Actual experts don’t talk to each other, he explains, and are full of slights, competition, and secrets. “But they will all talk to the reporter,” he says. “You are the sum of their collective wisdom.”

“Expertise may reach its sell-by date, and it may be outdated by the time a book is published,” the author continues. “But you have exercised the ability to dive deep”—or even go to space.

Collard greens for the soul Leni Sorensen re-examines the legacy of Southern food

Leni Sorensen shares her knowledge of how modern Southern cooking draws from cultures around the globe.

“Different groups and families were moving and looking for new land,” she says.

“You had that tremendous exodus of the slave trade out of the Old South and eastern coastline. In one decade, 350,000 Black Virginians were sold to the rest of the Southern slave states.”

Nevertheless, Sorensen says four ingredients anchor Southern food: corn, rice, greens, and pork. Take hush puppies, one of Red Hub’s most popular menu items. Hubbard points to the Native American influence in the corn and the deep-frying tradition of Scotland

coming together to make an inexpensive, humble dish found throughout the South.

Today, Sorensen says Southern cooking is enjoying newfound respect in culinary circles. But where does Charlottesville fit in the Southern culinary tradition? According to Sorensen, central Virginia lacks a specific focus because of its many bounties.

“Part of what it was known for was its fecundity,” she says. “We were a breadbasket and an apple basket...we were really producers—food that was transported to a lot of other places.”

New Southern cuisine is like putting ranch dressing on pizza. Everyone’s doing it, but no one admits it.

“When we set out to do Whiskey Jar, we specifically were not trying to be ‘new Southern,’” local restaurateur Will Richey says. “We might make some tweaks in the new Southern vein, but I still say we are classically Southern.”

So what is new Southern? The South Carolina Encyclopedia defines it as “a culinary trend that developed during the final three decades of the twentieth century in the American South [when] a new affluence provided the climate to experiment with new foods or prepare traditional fare in new ways.” The University of South Carolina-driven wiki cites grits made with milk, cream, or broth instead of water as an example.

According to Richey, new Southern is all about the extent of experimentation. Vinegar-based coleslaw instead of the traditional mayo base? Southern.

Slaw with jicama and avocado? New Southern. Indeed, Richey says the easiest way to spot a new Southern dish is to look for Californian influence.

Since Southern cuisine has long relied on farm-fresh produce, Cali’s 1970s-era farm-to-table movement fit right in.

So where does one find a new Southern supper in C’ville? Harrison Keevil’s Brookville was once the standard-bearer, Richey says, but since the restaurant closed in 2016, the genre has been underrepresented. “Maybe Ian Boden at The Shack, because he is so hyper-local in his sourcing,” Richey says.

ast culinary traditions influence Southern food—European, Native American, African, Caribbean. But if you’re thinking individually about those traditions when you’re thinking about Southern food, you’re kind of doing it wrong, according to food historian Leni Sorensen. Those traditions hit American soil in the 1600s and immediately began to mingle, even as they traveled south, she says.

“It happened fast, and it began to happen much earlier than it is ordinarily supposed to,” says Sorensen. “In the last quarter of the 17th century is when it begins to accelerate.”

The result in the American South was a European cooking tradition—staples from Great Britain tinged with French influences—vastly transformed by the indigenous and enslaved people of the New World. Where chefs in Europe may have had luxurious ingredients, clever cooks stateside had to coax flavors out of what the land provided, using seasoning (think plenty of fat and salt) and technique (think low-and-slow transformations).

“Southern food is indigenous food,” says Ryan Hubbard, owner of Red Hub Food Co. “Southern food is not filets or T-bones or rib eyes...It captures more the cuts of meat you weren’t used to seeing.”

The history of the American South also led to a rapid alignment of Southern food into regions, Sorensen says. Just as quickly as the cuisine’s worldwide influences coalesced in the States, the influences redistributed with subtle differences into the Old South, Mid-South, Gulf Coast, and other sub-regions.

“That’s what makes it exciting,” Sorensen says. “You can go 200 or 300 miles, and you are in a different world.”

The regionalism sprung naturally from the different growing regions present across the South, says Sorensen, but it was also due to the new nation’s “immense peripatetic population.”

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22): A blogger named Bunny-Gal writes, “I almost completely forgot who I was there for a while. But then I dug a hole and smelled the fresh dirt and now I remember everything and am okay.” I recommend you follow her lead, Leo—even if you haven’t totally lost touch with your essence. Communing with Mother Earth in the most direct and graphic way to remind you of everything you need to remember: of the wisdom you’ve lost track of and the secrets you’ve hidden too well and the urgent intuitions that are simmering just below the surface of your awareness.

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): I can’t understand the self-help gurus who advise us to relentlessly live in the present moment—to shed all awareness of past and future so as to focus on the eternal now. I mean, I appreciate the value of doing such an exercise on occasion for a few moments. I’ve tried it, and it’s often rejuvenating. But it can also be downright foolish to have no thoughts of yesterday and tomorrow. We need to evaluate how circumstances will evolve, based on our previous experience and future projections. It can be a deadening, depleting act to try to strip ourselves of the rich history we are always embedded in. In any case, Virgo, I advise you to be thoroughly aware of your past and future in the coming days.

To do so will enhance your intelligence and soulfulness in just the right ways to make good decisions.

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct.22): Psychotherapist and author Clarissa Pinkola Estés poetically refers to the source of our creativity as “the river under the river.” It’s the deep primal energy that “nourishes everything we make”—our “writing, painting, thinking, healing, doing, cooking, talking, smiling.” This river beneath the river doesn’t belong to any of us—is potentially available to all—but if harnessed correctly it works in very personal ways, fueling our unique talents. I bring this to your attention, Libra, because you’re close to gaining abundant new access to the power of the river beneath the river.

(June 21-July 22): Cancerian author Vladimir Mayakovsky wrote a poem about how one morning he went halfmad and conversed with the sun. At first he called the supreme radiance a “lazy clown,” complaining that it just floated through the sky for hours while he, Mayakovsky, toiled diligently at his day job painting posters.

Then he dared the sun to come down and have tea with him, which, to his shock, the sun did. The poet was agitated and worried—what if the close approach of the bright deity would prove dangerous? But the visitor turned out to be friendly. They had a pleasant dialog, and in the end the sun promised to provide extra inspiration for Mayakovsky’s future poetry. I invite you to try something equally lyrical and daring, dear Cancerian.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): In a letter to Jean Paul Sartre, author Simone de Beauvoir described how she was dealing with a batch of challenging memories: “I’m reliving it street by street, hour by hour, with the mission of neutralizing it, and transforming it into an inoffensive past that I can keep in my heart without either disowning it or suffering from it.” I love this approach!

It’s replete with emotional intelligence. I recommend it to you now, since it’s high time to wrangle and finagle with parts of your life story that need to be alchemically transformed and redeemed by your love and wisdom.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): In one of his poems, Capricorn-born Kenneth Rexroth complains about having “a crooked guide on the twisted path of love.” But in my view, a crooked guide is the best kind. It’s unwise to engage the services of a love accomplice who’s always looking for the simplest, straightest route, or who imagines that intimate togetherness can be nourished with easy, obvious solutions. To cultivate the most interesting intimacy, we need influences that appreciate nuance and complexity—that thrive on navigating the tricky riddles and unpredictable answers. The next eight weeks will be an excellent time for you Capricorns to heed this advice.

(Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Aquarian singer Etta James won six Grammy Awards and is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Grammy Hall of Fame, and Blues Hall of Fame. She testified, “Most of the songs I sing have that blues feeling in it. They have that sorry feeling.

And I don’t know what I’m sorry about.”

Wow! I’m surprised to hear this. Most singers draw on their personal life experience to infuse their singing with authentic emotion.

In any case, I urge you to do the opposite of Etta James in the coming weeks. It’s important for the future of your healing that you identify exactly what you’re sorry about.

(April 20-May 20): The English language, my native tongue, doesn’t ascribe genders to its nouns. But many languages do. In Spanish, the word for “bridge” is puente, which is masculine.

In German, “bridge” is brücke, which is feminine. A blogger named Tickettome says this is why Spanish speakers may describe a bridge as strong or sturdy, while German speakers refer to it as elegant or beautiful. I encourage you to meditate on bridges that possess the entire range of qualities, including the Spanish and German notions. In the coming weeks, you’ll be wise to build new metaphorical bridges, fix bridges that are in disrepair, and extinguish fires on any bridges that are burning.

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20): “Sometimes you win, sometimes you learn,” writes Piscean self-help author John C. Maxwell. His statement is useful, but it harbors a problematic implication.

It suggests that you can experience either winning or learning, but not both—that the only time you learn is when you lose. I disagree with this presumption. In fact, I think you’re now in a phase when it’s possible and even likely for you to both win and learn.

Aries (March 21-April 19): Poet Joshua Jennifer Espinoza writes, “i name my body girl of my dreams / i name my body proximity / i name my body full of hope despite everything.” I love her idea that we might give playful names and titles and descriptors to our bodies. In alignment with current astrological omens, I propose that you do just that. It’s time to take your relationship with your beautiful organism to a higher level. How about if you call it “Exciting Love River” or “Perfectly Imperfect Thrill” or “Amazing Maze”? Have fun dreaming up further possibilities!

Gemini (May 21-June 20): Académie Française is an organization devoted to preserving the purity and integrity of the French language.

One of its ongoing missions is to resist the casual incorporation of English words, which the younger generation of French people is inclined to do. Among anglicisms that don’t have the Académie’s approval: podcast, clickbait, chick-lit, deadline, hashtag, marketing, time-lapse, and showrunner. The ban doesn’t stop anyone from using the words, of course, but simply avoids giving them official recognition. I appreciate the noble intentions of the Académie, but regard its crusade as a losing battle that has minimal impact. In the coming weeks, I advise you to refrain from behavior that resembles the Académie’s.

CLINICAL TRIALS Study for Depression (MDD)

Exercise Training and Drug Study

Study for Type 2 Diabetics

Seeking adults for a research study, ages 18-65 with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) with continued depressive symptoms, despite taking an antidepressant. Participants will have up to 11 visits over a 72 day period. Taking study medication, blood draws, ECGs, maintaining an eDiary, and completing assessments will be required.

Reimbursement for time and travel is $75 per completed visit. Principal Investigator: Anita H. Clayton, MD.

Non-smoking, inactive adults aged 21-50 needed for study on the effect of exercise and the drug liraglutide on blood vessels. You must have 3 of the 4 characteristics: overweight, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, high fasting blood sugar. Study requires three 1-hour and two 9-hour visits over 5 months in UVA’s Clinical Research Unit. Participants are randomized to one of 4 groups: control, exercise training, study drug, or exercise + study drug.

Compensation is $1,500. Principal Investigator: Zhenqi Liu, MD.

Men and women with type 2 diabetes aged 18-60 needed for study on the effect of the drug empagliflozin (used to control blood sugar) on blood vessels. Study requires two 1-hour outpatient visits and two 7-hour admissions in UVA’s Clinical Research Unit. The study drug is taken for 12 weeks. You must have Type 2 diabetes, be a non-smoker, and not taking insulin. Compensation is $800.00, paid in installments. Principal Investigator: Eugene Barrett, MD, PhD.

Smart Renovations for Post-Pandemic Days

Y

ou’ve been reading about how hot the market is, and now you see it’s true. Listing after listing is quickly bid up higher than you want to pay or is sold before you even call a REALTOR® about seeing it.

Staying put looks better and better— but does what you’re looking at have to stay the same? The kitchen counter is scratched, the bedroom blinds will never be white again. And those energy bills—well, if they’d just stay the same, that would actually be alright, but they won’t. Costs rise as the efficiency of aging equipment declines.

So if you’ve always loved your neighborhood anyhow, and you’ve decided to stay put . . . now what? If you’re not going anywhere, what about a little renesting? What are some smart ways to make your house more of a home, more desirable when you finally put it on the market, and less expensive to live in right now? What are some of the most popular upgrades?

Making Your Home More Comfortable A lot has changed in the last 16 months, and for many of us, that includes work habits. “Because of the pandemic and the changes it has brought, the main thing I see is that people now need an office or a work space because they’re working from home” says Anne Hughes with Real Estate III - West, who has been selling real estate here for 18 years.

“That is a new thing on everybody’s minds: ‘Where is there a corner or a bedroom or something that we can convert to an office?’ A listing may be more highly

priced because it has a designated office.”

More of us are working from home, yes, and perhaps the recent dearth of opportunities to travel or to socialize and participate in activities away from home has driven even indoorsy types out of the home office and into the great (backyard) outdoors.

“Another thing I’m seeing is that people are valuing rural properties more,” Hughes notes. But even city folk “are valuing doing things outside more—so adding a patio, fixing up the front porch and the back deck, that kind of thing, so they can just have spaces outside that they enjoy. I see people spending money on that.”

Adding a skylight is a good way to bring a little of that outdoors into the house with you. On a cloudy night when no stars are visible, LED lights in the shaft will brighten the space so it isn’t

just a black hole. Landscaping your property with deciduous trees will shade the home in the warmer months. For maximum effects, plant them on the south and west side of the house.

But the kitchen and the bathrooms are where most people like to start when they upgrade their homes, and renovations there can return much of one’s investment when the home is sold.

Todd Buck of Albemarle County’s Weston Construction has been remodeling since he was 18 years old, and bathrooms and kitchens are what he gets the most calls for nowadays. “We tend to gut a kitchen down to the drywall and studs,” Buck says. “Typically, we will install all new cabinetry, and granite or quartz countertops. Sometimes we change the layout and add islands.”

“We’re also seeing a lot of people who want to do a tile backsplash in the area

between the upper and base cabinets, and flooring,” Buck notes. One perennially popular backsplash choice is subway tile (3-by-6-inch glazed rectangles), a style and form that can be traced back to early 20th century New York City subways stations. Historically always white, they now come in many other solid colors, shades, and finishes.

When it comes to bathroom renovations, tub to shower conversions are much called for nowadays. “We see a lot of people who want to switch from a regular tub to a stand-up shower,” Buck says. “They don’t want to have to step over the side of a 15-inch tall bathtub to get into the shower.” Glass-enclosed showers, often with benches and upgraded fixtures like wall-mounted shower panels with a variety of different sprays, are all the rage.

Step one in making your home more energy efficient and cheaper to live in is use less power.

“Say you have an attic hatch—if that’s not sealed, that’s a place where you’re losing energy,” says Greg Slater of Charlottesville’s Nest Realty. “It’s easy to climb up in the attic to see if the insulation is heavy enough, if it’s covering everything.

If you’ve never been up there, you might find places that are just sheet rock of the ceiling, that’s just another place for heat loss.

“I’ve never met anyone who didn’t want a more comfortable home that was less costly to operate,” Slater says. Over the years he’s talked to many homeowners with energy goals, “but can never figure out how to connect the dots and actually implement a plan.”

Energy Star lightbulbs use 75 percent less energy than regular incandescents and last up to ten times longer. Energy Star LED (light-emitting diode) bulbs burn just as efficiently, but last two to five times longer than regular fluorescents and 35 to 50 times longer than incandescents.

Smart thermostats let users heat and cool homes efficiently, for example, by setting different temperatures for different times of the day. They adjust for

“I’m seeing more of solar because it’s a technology that has improved a lot,” Hughes says. “When it first came out, I think people were not sure about it; they were bigger. They still don’t give a house curb appeal, but they look a little better now. Younger buyers in general are more interested in green aspects of the house.”

A smart way to start is with an energy audit by a professional who can rate your home and help you devise a plan for both immediate and long-term improvement. “The best place is the Local Energy Alliance Program (LEAP),” Slater says.

“They’re a one-stop shop for all things energy efficiency. They partner with local government to help our elected officials who want to institute policies to raise the energy efficiency.”

Having an energy check-up is a way to get a basic understanding of how your home operates and where you might start making improvements. And LEAP can connect you with trustworthy contractors focused on energy efficiency.

Increasing efficiency may include checking for drafts, weather-stripping doors and windows, sealing and insulating ducts, and replacing incandescent lightbulbs with compact fluorescents, halogens, LEDs or smart, programmable LEDs. It may include installing a tankless water heater, that only heats your

humidity and show the amount of energy being used. Some can be operated remotely through a smartphone, tablet, laptop or desktop computer. Others track a user’s preferences and adjust automatically. According to the EPA, smart thermostats can save up to $180 per year on heating and cooling bills.

All these steps will provide long-term energy savings—and lower energy bills.

And for the really ambitious, a decision to maximize energy savings will include a decision, as Slater puts it, to “make your own solar power.”

“The biggest thing we see happening over the last few years is the addition of solar panels. The productivity of the panels has caught up to making the economics work. If you’re buying the home for a long term commitment and we show you the math of how the panels will pay for themselves in eight to ten years and you have the resources to do it, it’s actually a great investment.

Making Your Home More Energy Efficient

“I have a listing with solar panels on the roof, way out in Albemarle County.

It’s very remote but I’m surprised at all the interest it’s getting. I think a lot of the interest is because of the solar. To certain buyers, that means a lot.”

Another good option for homeowners in Central Virginia, where the summers are hotter than the winters are cold, is the so-called cool roof, designed to keep a building comfortable in warmer temperatures by reflecting the sun’s light, and in so doing absorbing less of its heat.

Typically, cool roofs have been white, or perhaps some other light color. Newer cool roofs, however, also come in richer, darker hues. As a bonus, cool roofs can also enhance roof durability. All these measures also reduce the home’s carbon footprint.

What You May Recoup Remodeling Magazine rated projects in the Richmond area, pitting their construction costs against the cost recouped upon resale to find the percentage of cost recouped. Here are some of the specifics they found for average and larger sized projects.

Midrange (average-sized) projects: Major kitchen remodel, 44.7 percent; minor kitchen remodel, 55.1 percent, master suite addition, 51.5 percent; bathroom addition, 44.1 percent; bathroom remodel, 44.6 percent; basement remodel, 55 percent; roof replacement, 55.6 percent; siding replacement, 48.4 percent; garage door replacement, 51 percent; manufactured stone veneer, 102 percent; steel entry door replacement, 81.5 percent.

Upscale (larger-sized) projects: major kitchen remodel, 45.9 percent; master suite addition, 47.7 percent; wooden deck addition, 62.7 percent; window replacement (wood), 59.6 percent; window replacement (vinyl), 54.7 percent; garage door replacement, 45.1 percent; grand entrance (fiberglass), 35.6 percent.

On average, the projects Remodeling Magazine rated in 2017 paid back an average of 64.3 cents on the dollar in resale value. REALTORS® were most likely to recommend replacement rather than addition projects. Projects with “curb appeal”—siding, doors, and windows— typically generated the highest returns on investment.

Plan First One thing Buck always recommends is that clients have a set of plans drawn up by an architect or draftsperson before the work begins. “If we have plans, we can price what’s there and give you a pretty good hard price, and if that’s too much it’s a whole lot cheaper to start with a new piece of paper than to already have it in place. Yeah, I can build it, but I want you to be happy with what I’ve built.

By the time we start, you should have a really good understanding of what the products are that are in the project, and what the cost of that project should be.”

So plan well, but first dream a little.
