I am writing in response to the September 2, 2020 article, "Zest for life: PVCC Culinary director leaves behind a legacy of passion."

The loss of Chef Eric Breckoff is devastating to the communities he so graciously touched, but for those of us who were fortunate enough to study under his guidance, it's also deeply personal. I met Chef Breckoff as a 19-year-old culinary student at Reynolds Community College in Richmond, where I had recently enrolled after a few less-thansuccessful semesters at a four-year school. At Reynolds, I learned not only how to be a chef, but to enjoy school and learning through pursuing your passions. Chef Breckoff epitomized this; his love of food and cooking could not be questioned, and his enthusiasm for the subject was unmatched. Chef Breckoff inspired countless future chefs to pursue their dreams and achieve their goals.

However, for me, it was 10 years later that Chef Breckoff helped to shape my career yet again in an even more meaningful way. After working my way up the ranks in the restaurant industry, I was ready for a change.

I was still in love with cooking and food, but was losing interest in late nights and insanely long hours. I liked to teach and learn, and I wanted to return to school without giving up cooking. On a whim, I googled Chef 's name, found him at PVCC, and sent an email. "I'm a former student (from 10 years ago!)," I said, "and I want to ask you about teaching culinary school." Needless to say, I received a characteristically enthusiastic reply and an offer of a phone call to discuss. Over the coming months we chatted, an email here, a long phone call there, as I navigated the job hunting and interview process. He provided me with a recommendation, he extolled the virtues and joys of teaching over and over, and he even offered to give me a shot as an adjunct.

Today, I teach culinary arts at a community college in Brooklyn, New York. It is all of the things Chef Breckoff said it would be: challenging, rewarding, inspiring, creative, and fun. It is a dream come true, and I owe a debt of gratitude to Chef Breckoff for helping me to find my passion, and pursue it with zeal.

Chef Breckoff used to wax poetic about the simple pleasure of enjoying a hunk of funky blue cheese with a glass of fine port (something 19-year-old me found revolting). So today, in his honor, I will do just that as I bid farewell to one of the world's culinary greats.

Rest in peace, Chef Breckoff. You are greatly missed.

As if we weren’t all sad enough at the loss of live music, this week’s cover story is about a band known for the energy of its live performances (p.18).

Illiterate Light is, by all accounts, the next big thing to come out of central Virginia, but it’s unlikely you’ll be able to see the duo in person any time soon.

By now, we’ve come to terms with the painful circumstances of the pandemic. As our question of the week responses show (p.31), everyone has managed to keep music in their lives somehow, whether that means blasting old favorites or picking up a new instrument (in one reader’s case, it’s the Native American flute). We all deserve credit for our resilience.

Still, the loss of live music stings a little more as the summer heat finally breaks this week. Fall is the best time of the year in Charlottesville, and the season isn’t the same without a long, cool night at the Pavilion, or a bluegrassy evening watching the sunset at Carter Mountain, splayed on a picnic blanket with friends. (Sunset Series is happening, but social distancing requirements apply and tickets must be purchased in advance.)

The pain of lost community is compounded, of course, by the utter fecklessness of our highest levels of leadership. We can’t credibly claim to be on the upswing—in fact, things are getting worse. Illiterate Light sum it up pretty neatly on the fourth track of their self-titled 2019 album. “I wanna leave America / but I don’t know where to go / I want to be an outlaw / but I don’t wanna be alone.” —Ben Hitchcock

ohnny Reb, the bronze Confederate soldier who has stood, musket in hand, outside the Albemarle County Courthouse since 1909, has been replaced by a patch of hay.

After the Unite the Right rally accelerated the national debate over Confederate monuments, Charlottesville finally took down one of our own. The Albemarle Board of Supervisors voted to remove Johnny Reb, officially known as “At Ready,” earlier this summer, and on Saturday morning a truck arrived to haul off the Lost Cause relic. A small crowd gathered to watch as the crew’s yellow ropes slowly lowered Johnny Reb off his pedestal.

The removal revealed a time capsule encased in concrete below the statue’s concrete plinth. Charlottesville Tomorrow found an old Daily Progress clipping in which the monument’s erectors declared that the capsule shall remain untouched “until the angel Gabriel shall put one foot on the land and one in the sea, and proclaim that ‘time shall be no more.’” Those plans went awry sometime in the course of the last 111 years—the capsule was breached by groundwater long ago, and when the Confederate relics contained within finally saw the light of day, they were so waterlogged as to be almost unrecognizable.

UVA history professor Jalane Schmidt, who has spent years researching Johnny Reb and lobbying for his removal, says “it was a relief ” to see the statue come down. “It’s gratifying to see public opinion shift, especially among elected leaders,” she says.

Still, Schmidt has serious concerns about the monument’s future. As per the new law, these Confederate statues must be offered to a museum rather than just melted down. A dubious list of organizations volunteered to take Johnny Reb, including the Sons of Confederate Veterans. In the end, the Albemarle Board of Supervisors voted to send him to the Shenandoah Battlefield Valley Foundation, a Winchester-based public history or-

Visitors bureau to depart Transit Center, citing expense and declining tourism

ince the stylish, glass-walled Transit Center first opened in spring 2007 on the east end of the Downtown Mall, the Charlottesville Albemarle Convention & Visitors Bureau has been a tenant in what was the city’s first LEED-certified building. That long-term relationship will soon end.

Even before the pandemic turned the mall into a ghost town, the number of visitors finding the tourist center was down, says Albemarle Supervisor Ann Mallek, who serves on the CACVB board. “The decision was based on the very few interactions held in a building with very expensive rent,” she says.

The bureau announced plans for two mobile visitor centers—likely Ford Sprinter vans—to replace brick-andmortar locations downtown and in the former Crozet train depot and “to reach and interact with even more visitors, by

Mallek says at events such as the Heritage Harvest Festival, “I was handing out hundreds of brochures. I’m very much in favor of mobile vans.”

Councilor Heather Hill, the city’s representative on the CACVB board, says a pilot test moving the visitors bureau to the Old Metropolitan Center in the center of the mall earlier in the year revealed a “resistance to the public going into buildings.” She favors a hybrid model that offers more flexibility and reduces costs.

“Everyone is rethinking how much office space they need,” she says, “and not expending dollars on space we don’t need.”

The visitors bureau is funded from 30 percent of the city and county’s lodging tax, and pays the city $45,000 a year to rent the Transit Center space, says CACVB Executive Director Courtney Cacatian.

Bunin and his colleagues came up with the idea for the project while discussing their field experiences with each other last year.

With the help of Craddock and Skelton, as well as Murray lead teacher Julie Stavitski and Albemarle High learning technology integrator Adam Seipel, he designed and submitted a grant to National Geographic, called “Revisiting Charlottesville.”

With classes online this fall, the project is a rare opportunity to get students away from their screens. Kids will be asked to research and analyze their own homes and neighborhoods, and think about how they perceive these spaces and how they have evolved over time.

“They’ll take some 360 [degree] photos, use Google Maps to create tours, record audio, and [do] some interviews,” Craddock says. “They’ll really think about their own environment, before we head out to the city at large.”

Bunin hopes students will not only develop a new understanding and appreciation for local history, but have an opportunity to “fix” it in the present day, pointing to a past field excursion he did with some colleagues to a World War II cemetery. A teacher assigned to research a particular soldier buried there discovered that his tombstone was misspelled, and was able to get it corrected.

“The vision for us is that we’re going to have these things happen with us too,” Bunin says. “Things that are just not on the surface, that no one knows about and are hidden in the stacks somewhere—[they’re] going to be recovered or uncovered, so that our community now has [them]”.

or many people, Shenandoah National Park is a great place to hike, camp, bike, and explore. But now, Albemarle’s middle and high schoolers will have a chance to see a different side of the park, and dig deeper into its creation. What happened to the people who once lived there? What are their stories? Can we feel those ghosts in the park today?

Thanks to a $50,000 grant from the National Geographic Society, Albemarle County Public Schools is launching a new social studies project, combining field experiences with geographic inquiry and geospatial technology.

Students will conduct what project leader Chris Bunin calls an “above-ground archeology dig” using high-tech radar at several local historical sites, including the Downtown Mall, Montpelier, and the University of Virginia. They’ll start by thinking of a geographic question for a particular site, focusing on the different perspectives and experiences people have had there over time, based on their race, class, gender, and other parts of their identity.

“When you take some of our cultural iconic places, and even simpler places, in our community, depending on the eye of the beholder...that space and place means something differently,” says Bunin, who teaches geography at Albemarle High. For example, “when some students come to school, they feel very safe and see a place of learning. Other times, people see a place that’s very powerful and uncomfortable.”

“More people need to be able to access those viewpoints, so we can have rational conversations about what’s going on, or what we’re trying to do to improve our community,” he adds, pointing to critical aspects of local history—like slavery and urban renewal—whose harmful effects can still be seen and felt today.

In addition to visiting sites, students will answer their questions using primary resources, including photographs, property sales, interviews, old maps, and texts.

“We want students to see themselves in their community, see their perspective in their community, and see themselves as contributors to that narrative,” says Monticello High School geography teacher John Skelton, who’ll also be working on the project. “And if those stories have not been shown, they can show them.”

With the help of geospatial technology, students will share their data and analyses in the form of an interactive story map of their historical site. Users will be able to click on different icons on the map, and discover video and oral histories, pictures from the past and present, and excerpts from historical documents. Members of the community will be able to interact with these maps first-hand at two public showcases. As the project expands and evolves, library media specialist Mae Craddock envisions students being able to create augmented reality walking tours.

“We’re thinking about cultural geography, not just as a slice in a single time, but rather a slice across time,” says Craddock, who will be leading the middle school portion of the project at Murray Community School.

Whoever next occupies the space will have to work closely with the Pavilion once concerts begin again, because the Pavilion restricts access when there’s a show, he says.

Hutto thinks it’s important to have a visitors center on the Downtown Mall. “I’d like to see a place where people can ask questions and get directions,” he says. “I think it’s kind of sad there won’t be a visitors center.”

But Cacatian says the bureau will still have some sort of presence on the Downtown Mall.

She notes that Arlington’s visitors bureau went mobile in 2010 and hasn’t reopened its brick-and-mortar center. “It’s working great.

They’re able to serve 40 percent more people.”

She adds, “The good thing is we have time to figure it out.”

42.6 percent compared to 2019, says Cacatian, citing an industry report. The average daily rate slid 22.7 percent, and the key industry metric, revenue per available room, is down 55.6 percent for that same period.

“Two years from now, we’ll really be feeling the budget impact from the coronavirus,” she says. “We’re still crunching the numbers to see what we’ll have left over for office space.”

The bureau has a month-to-month lease, and will depart the Transit Center at the end of October, says Cacatian.

When it was first proposed in the early 2000s, many considered the Transit Center a boondoggle to take advantage of $6.5 million in soon-to-expire federal funds for intermodal transportation. When a location on West Main near the Amtrak station—to connect trains or Greyhound coaches to city buses—was not forthcoming, the city decided to proceed on land it owned on the mall.

At the same time, plans were in the works to revitalize the east end of the mall with a music pavilion that would be leased long-term to and run by music/real estate magnate Coran Capshaw. The city now bills the Transit Center’s intermodality as connecting city buses, bikes, and pedestrians.

Philadelphia firm WRT won awards for the design of the 11,200-square-foot space. Besides housing a Catch the CAT hub downstairs, original plans called for a retail space, but other than a brief run for Alex George’s Just Curry in 2008, that hasn’t materialized either.

The visitor center’s departure means the city will soon have more vacant space on the mall. “Obviously it’s a loss for that rental revenue,” says Hill.

As for future occupants of the space, city spokesman Brian Wheeler says, “At this point,

Though he views gun violence as a “nonissue” in the places where the city has now banned guns, Ben, who is a gun owner, also questions whether the law will be an effective way to prevent it, pointing to shootings that have occurred in places where guns were banned. (Due to the varying definitions of “mass shooting” and “gun-free zone,” research remains unclear on whether shootings occur at increased rates in gun-free zones.)

Speaking only for herself, City Councilor Sena Magill says she too worries about the “unintended consequences” the ordinance could have, but feels that it is “the right way forward,” specifically because of the violence and trauma surrounding Unite the Right.

“If this ordinance had been in place on August 12, 2017, hundreds of people would not have been able to legally gather on park property and intimidate and threaten my friends and family,” she says. “I [also] don’t want someone to be able to walk into City Hall with a gun on their hip...and be able to intimidate the City Hall staff.”

“We’ve seen extremists exploit lax gun laws to terrorize the public,” adds Mike Fox, legislative lead for the Crozet chapter of gun control advocacy group Moms Demand Action. “We saw it with Unite the Right in Charlottesville, earlier this year when armed demonstrators descended upon Richmond, [and] we’ve seen it across the state, where you have armed citizens showing up at government meetings, intimidating lawmakers [and] voters.”

According to spokesman Tyler Hawn, CPD is creating an educational and awareness campaign on the ordinance “to ensure understanding and compliance.” It will alert the public of where they can and cannot legally carry a gun, and the consequences that can come with violating the ordinance, a Class 1 misdemeanor: up to a year in jail, and a fine of up to $2,500.

n June, the Virginia General Assembly passed a slew of gun control bills, including one that allows cities and counties to prohibit guns on public property. Localities across the state, like Newport News and Alexandria, have since enacted such a ban—and last week, Charlottesville followed suit.

Beginning October 1, guns will be prohibited in parks, buildings, and recreational or community centers owned by the city.

They’ll also be banned on public streets or rights-of-way used for—or adjacent to—a permitted event, according to an ordinance unanimously passed by City Council on September 8.

What might have seemed like a straightforward progressive reform has, in fact, stirred controversy.

Anti-racist activist Brad Slocum fears the ordinance will be selectively enforced, pointing to the infamous Unite the Right rally, during which Charlottesville and state police officers stood by as white supremacists attacked counterprotesters.

“There’s ample recent and historical evidence that these kinds of ordinances... are not usually enforced against groups or individuals that are perceived as friendly to the police or the state, [like] militias, white supremacists, and similar types,” says Slocum, who supports defunding the police. “Whereas they do seem historically to be enforced against Black, leftwing, or otherwise non- or anti-establish-

early a decade ago, a traveling troupe of musicians was midway through its set at the now-demolished Random Row Books in Charlottesville when the power went out. While darkness settled over the crowd, the band continued its performance undeterred, with no noticeable change in sound. That’s because the group’s set-up was running on a bike-powered generator: With one member pedaling a bicycle on a generator stand, a small PA system kept functioning. From the darkness sprang Charlottesville’s next big thing: Illiterate Light.

That night at Random Row, JMU alums Jeff Gorman and Jake Cochran were playing in Money Cannot Be Eaten, one of a handful of socially oriented bands cycling around the state together under the heading of Petrol-Free Jubilee.

In 2015, Gorman and Cochran set off on a new project, the rock band Illiterate Light (the name is taken from a line in the Wilco song “Theologians”). Since then, the pair has toured widely, developed a devoted following, and signed a deal with a major label. But they still find themselves recalling those foundational days.

Petrol-Free Jubilee “really pushed Jeff and I to think like, alright, there’s definitely big-picture solutions that we [don’t] know how to contribute to yet,” says Cochran. “But diving in with a bunch of friends and

Shining their light In 2020, the band launched an ongoing series that captures live performances from past shows called “In the Moment: Illiterate Light Live.”

One of the series’ most featured venues is The Golden Pony. This nod to Harrisonburg isn’t the only way Gorman and Cochran continue to acknowledge the community that made them.

Professor Joseph “Ojo” Taylor remembers Gorman as a student in the music industry program at JMU. “My songwriting class is where we get our hands dirty, you know, get under the hood and really analyze a lot of songs,” Taylor explains. “[Gorman] stood out to me initially because he just had a depth and an interest and passion for this that a lot of students don’t have right away.”

Gorman and Cochran keep in touch with Taylor, guesting during class workshops, sharing what they’re working on, giving students an insight into life as a nationally touring band. Before COVID-19, the duo would often invite students to shows or offer mentorship over a cup of coffee.

“The way that they create community and support their community is the thread that binds their whole vision together,” says Williams. “You know, we are on a major [record] label, but we still use the same videographers from Harrisonburg that have always made their videos…Virginia makes them who they are and they want to give back.”

The duo’s work with Glenn and Olsen caught the attention of another stalwart on the Richmond scene—Tyler Williams. While Williams might be best known as the drummer for The Head and the Heart, he’s also worked with Lucy Dacus and was seeking another local project to champion, so he checked out one of the duo’s shows at the Richmond venue The Camel.

“I immediately was taken by the energy on stage when I walked into The Camel,” says Williams. “It just felt like there was like an electricity in the room...that’s the first sign when you know that something is happening with a music artist. You feel it in the room. It’s the closest thing I’ve ever felt to magic.”

As the band propelled forward, Williams took off with them in a management capacity. It wasn’t long before major labels came knocking, and Illiterate Light signed to Atlantic, releasing its self-titled label debut last year.

“There’s some tap dancing that’s going on; I’m actually hitting a big keyboard with my feet as we play and then I run that through its own bass,” he says. “It’s its own little universe that I’ve created.”

Meanwhile, Cochran plays a stand-up drum kit, taking a normal drum kit and raising it up higher. He stands on his left leg and plays the kick drum with his right foot.

“It started out as a very visual change. Jeff and I, as two people, really want to be able to interact. The way I decided to do that was to bring the drum kit up front and one time I just tried kicking the stool out and standing up,” Cochran says. “It was a fun way to trade energy and we set up right on the edge of the stage so it’s in your face—and drums are very rarely that forward.”

After establishing a signature live sound, the duo had to figure out how to harness that same energy in the studio. Richmond artist Charlie Glenn (The Trillions, Palm Palm) connected them with Adrian Olsen, producer and owner of Montrose Recording in Richmond, and they set to work on Illiterate Light’s first full-length LP. “The main critique I had heard coming into recording Illiterate Light was that they sounded massive live, but the recordings they had done up to that point didn’t represent the sound they had developed live,” Olsen recalls. “So my approach was to have them play live in the studio and go

biking around Virginia to talk about environmentalism and sing songs was something we could get into.”

The band’s experience with the jubilee, along with other volunteerism, directly informed the ethos of Illiterate Light, establishing community building and social consciousness as guiding tenets for its musical output.

In their early days, during junior and senior year, Cochran was on the medical track at JMU and worked as an EMT. “So much of the pain that I was seeing in the ambulance and the runs we were going on were people with food-based illness,” he says. “We were going to the same neighborhoods picking up the same people. It was all food-related and it was addiction-related and it weighed heavily on my spirit to know that there was this bigger problem.”

In response, Cochran and Gorman helped out at a local nonprofit, Our Community Place. The center operated as a soup kitchen and offered resources for those who were formerly incarcerated, or facing homelessness or addiction. There, the duo connected with area farmers, which inspired them to do an organic agricultural internship. After graduation, they continued to grow produce and sold it at the farmers’ market and co-op. They’d often bring hoards of potatoes, onions, and tomatoes door to door, offering them to nearby restaurants.

“It was really a big part of integrating so deeply into the community here,” Gorman says. “We [were] playing music at night and then living this totally different lifestyle during the day.”

The main venue they played was the Blue Nile, an Ethiopian restaurant whose basement served as a club. Opened by the Arefaine family, who immigrated to the United States in the wake of the Ethiopian civil war, the Blue Nile was a counter-cultural hub.

“The Nile was the only place that really was permissive to outsider music—alternative, punk, metal, hip-hop—being played live in their facility,” says former bar manager Paul Somers. “That really changed the music scene in Harrisonburg.”

Somers took over in 2014 and reopened as The Golden Pony the following spring. Gorman and Cochran helped Somers book and promote shows—and even created a Harrisonburg guidebook for touring bands rolling through town.

“It showcases where their hearts are when it comes to live music, you know, it’s not just about them,” Somers says. “It’s about the whole scene and the larger scheme of bands that they see and know and believe in, and think that other people should appreciate.”

The duo took it a step further by booking The Golden Pony as Illiterate Light’s home base and doing several shows a year at the venue. After extensive touring across the United States, the band had a reputation for its high-energy performances and unusual setup, so it wasn’t uncommon for these shows to sell out.

“It’s always cool to put on a show with them because we know it’s going to be this huge, utterly cathartic rock and roll,” says Somers. “Everyone’s just moving and dancing and surging with the music.”

Old order, new visions Rochelle Sumner and Will Kerner bring isolation out in the open

da Mitchell Puffenbarger wasn’t an artist. If she had any inclination, she likely didn’t have the time. With the bulk of her days spent cleaning, cooking, caring for her family, and attending church, she also didn’t mix with people outside her religious community of Old German Baptist Brethren. She dressed plainly and, like the other female believers in Franklin, West Virginia, wore a bonnet as a symbol of the Biblical concept of headship, which states that women’s purpose is to be subordinate to men as part of God’s order of creation.

She died in 1972.

Her life, faith, and the bonnet she wore every day came to serve as artistic inspiration to someone in her family who she never knew. Rochelle Sumner, Ida’s great-granddaughter, discovered the old order dress and prayer coverings in a trunk—remnants of a different time, colored by a tenacious self-seclusion and heavy with the presence of a rigid belief system.

“I began thinking about the women in my family, and how we’ve covered ourselves for generations,” says Sumner. Reflecting on the fact that Ida was the last woman of her family to wear a bonnet and dress plainly, she believes the metaphorical version— emotional distance and hiding from outsiders as a form of protection—still runs deeply through the psyche of her relatives.

That bonnet and what it came to represent took on something greater in scope, and thus The Bonnet Maker was born.

It’s hard to pin down the project by the specifications that classify most fine art, but it connects performance, brief narrative writing, and photography. The latter portions are visually directed by Will Kerner, photographer and a co-founder of Charlottesville’s Live Arts and Light House Studio, whom Sumner met in October of 2017.

Sumner says that the collaboration works because of Kerner’s empathy for the character—and for her when she embodies it.

Kerner create engaging results captured in photos and buttressed by lines of text.

The Bonnet Maker traverses empty natural settings and passes through mundane structures given new, ominous contexts; parking lots surrender in post-apocalyptic black and white sunshine, mirrored structures magnify a greater rift between past and present. Changes brought on by the pandemic have intensified the isolation of the character and infused the visuals. Much can be said of gender issues, systems of oppression, and contemporary isolation, both self-imposed and those brought about by society.

In nearly every context, The Bonnet Maker character appears pained, struggling with an inner conflict simmering right at the surface. As reining in that conflict creates tension, the project’s interpretation of a belief system produces another kind of fragile balance.

Both artists maintain the importance of respecting the OGBB community as they explore its ideals artistically. Kerner, like Sumner, is also of a German protestant denomination (the relatively less-strict Moravians), and says the idea of “an older religious sect being placed into the context of today’s world” is part of what appealed to him about becoming involved in the project.

The pair started creating at the end of 2017 when Sumner, in her OGBB costume, and Kerner visited a live nativity scene at Church of the Brethren in Rockingham County, which was also the first time she wore the outfit in public.

“I was very nervous because I didn’t know how people would react to seeing an old order woman at their church,” she recalls.

Other times, they’ve taken to shooting in even more unscripted situations. On Instagram (@thebonnetmaker), the hooded figure confronts nacho food trucks, beauty queens, and police officers. The results are more akin to a documentary capturing the cultural and temporal dissonance, with Sumner’s character drawing smiles and stares from the general public with occasionally comic results.

Kerner says that public shoots, like one at the Rockingham County Fair, can feel edgy because his presence as photographer gives her appearance the buzz of a theatrical event. For Sumner’s part, she tends to stay in character during interactions, but says she’ll drop it if they mention old order heritage in their family.

Interactions aren’t always so breezy. For a performance at Ghost in Reverse at Woolen Mills, Sumner set up a Bonnet Maker Shop, where anyone could try on bonnets and leave written comments about the experience.

“There were angry responses and an aversion by most women who read the large handwritten scroll hanging on the wall,” Sumner says. It recounted St. Paul’s 1,900-year-old instruction about head covering and the headship concept infuriated many women visitors.

“One woman thought I was trying to convert women to the old order, and did not realize it was a performance. It’s good to know I can be that convincing!” Sumner says.

She and Kerner plan to do more performances locally, and to continue creating chapters to the character.

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Libran playwright Wendy Wasserstein wrote, “Every year I resolve to be a little less the me I know and leave a little room for the me I could be. Every year I make a note not to feel left behind by my friends and family who have managed to change far more than I.” I recommend Wasserstein’s practice to you, dear Libra. The coming weeks will be an excellent time to launch this ritual as an annual tradition. For best results, write it out as a vow. I mean take a pen and paper and compose a solemn pledge, then sign it on the bottom to seal your determination.

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov.21): “I may not lead the most dramatic life,” confesses singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright, “but in my brain it’s War and Peace every day.” He was referencing Leo Tolstoy’s sprawling, exuberant 1,200-page novel War and Peace, which features stories about five families who lived through Napoléon’s invasion of Russia in the 19th century. I’m guessing that these days your fantasy life may also be filled with epic fairy tales and heroic sagas and tear-jerking myths.

Is there a problem with that? Not necessarily. It could be quite entertaining and educational. I do recommend that you keep your actual life a little calmer and saner, however.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): You know what perfectionists are: people who obsessively strive to finesse every last detail, polishing and honing so compulsively that they risk suck-

(Aug. 23-Sept. 22): “At the necessary moment, going naked will be your most convincing disguise,” writes poet Dobby Gibson. As I apply his witty statement to your life, I’ll interpret it metaphorically. My sense is that you could really use the kind of “disguise” he’s talking about.

What I mean is that you would benefit by appearing to be different from what people expect of you. You can gain key advantages by shifting the image you present to the world—by expressing a part of your identity that is not usually obvious. And I think the best way to do that is to “go naked”—i.e., be candid and transparent and vulnerable about your core truths. ing all the soul out of the finished product.

In contrast to them, I propose that we identify a different class of humans known as imperfectionists. They understand that a ferocious drive for utter purity can make things sterile and ugly. I wonder why he said “too deeply” and not just “deeply.” Did he mean his dialogs with himself distracted him from important matters in the world outside of his imagination? Was he implying that he got so consumed while conducting his self-interviews that he lost his bearings and forgot what his goals were? With these cautions in mind, Pisces, I invite you to dive into an intense but spacious communion with yourself. Make this a delightful and illuminating conference, not a raging debate or a debilitating argument.

e may all be a little worried, but nature isn’t, and she’s been busy as ever. She has Jonagold, Candy Crisp, and 20 other varieties of apples waiting for us up on Carter Mountain. She has yellow, white, and donut peaches ready for the pickin’ in Crozet, and she has pumpkins on the way. Yes, summer is fading and the fruit’s on the vine, and on the branch, and get it while you can, and there are so many places we can get it.

Fruit cultivation has a long history in these parts, going at least as far back as the early 17th century and the first English settlers in Jamestown. In 1629, Captain John Smith wrote that apples, peaches, apricots, and figs were “prosper[ing] exceedingly” in the Virginia Colony. By 1642 Virginia’s first governor, William Berkley, was cultivating 1,500

fruit trees; in 1694 he decreed that every planter must, “for every 500 acres granted him ... enclose and fence a quarter-acre of ground near his dwelling house for orchards and gardens.” By 1800, most plantations had orchards, and some grew as many as 10,000 trees.

Today Virginia is the sixth-largest apple-growing state in the country, with apple country stretching from the mountainous northern Shenandoah Valley through the Roanoke Valley into the Albemarle and Rappahannock counties, and Patrick and Carroll counties in the southwest.

According to USDA statistics, Virginia had 9,500 yield-bearing acres of apples in 2019 that produced an estimated 190 million pounds or 20,000 pounds per acre. A bushel of apples weighs approximately 48 pounds, so this would translate into almost 4 million bushels. No less than 98.8 million pounds (approximately

52 percent) of Virginia apples were processed into apple cider, apple butter and other products.

Apples are Virginia’s 14th largest commodity and accounted for roughly $35 million in farm sales in 2019. Apple exportation varies year to year. In Fiscal Year 2019, approximately 15 loads of Virginia apples were certified for export to Costa Rica, Panama, El Salvador, Sri Lanka and Columbia. In Fiscal Year 2018, approximately 49 loads of Virginia apples were certified for export to Costa Rica, Honduras, Israel, Colombia, El Salvador, Guatemala, Guyana, and Panama.

Yellow-flesh peaches are traditional, tangy-tasting, and excellent for canning and cooking, as well as eating fresh. White-flesh peaches originated in Asia and are best eaten fresh. More delicately flavored than yellow peaches, they are sweeter as well, with a lower acidity that makes the sweetness even more pronounced. So-called donut peaches, also known as flat or Saturn peaches, are flat-shaped and thin-skinned, have very small stones, either white or yellow flesh, and an extra sweet taste.

“Thomas Jefferson was a big horticulturalist and grew a lot of heirloom varieties of apples,” says Cynthia Chiles of Carter Mountain Orchard and Chiles Peach Orchards, whose own family has been continuously farming its land for 100 years. A student of agriculture as well as a lover of fine food and drink, America’s first foodie had an eight-acre, horseshoe-shaped “Fruitery” at Monticello with 400 trees and two small vineyards, plus beds for figs and strawberries, “berry squares” for currants, gooseberries, and raspberries, and a nursery to propagate plants and trees.

Albemarle County’s First Family of peaches and apples dates its orchards back to 1912. “My two great grandfathers planted our first peach and apple trees over in Crozet,” Chiles says.

Third, fourth, and fifth generation members of the Chiles Family today are still planting, pruning, picking, and otherwise working to provide fresh produce to Central Virginia and beyond.

The Chiles family began operating Carter Mountain, just down the road from Monticello, in the 1970s, and began selling peaches and apples in 1974 after a bad freeze. Left with so little fruit that the usual picking and packing routine wasn’t worth its while, the family put an ad in the paper, set up a card table, scales and a cigar box—and hoped. It worked.

They sold out, and what was meant to be a one-time, emergency measure became an annual April through November, pickyour-own-fruit tradition at the now much expanded farm stands at the Crozet and Carter Mountain orchards.

Carter Mountain Orchard offers a 40-mile view (and an observation tower), and 22 varieties of apples, from Gala and Ginger Gold, which ripen in the middle of the summer, to Pink Lady, which are harvested in early November. Among them are “older fashioned varieties that are not as mainstream,” Chiles says.

Pick-your-own and pre-picked apples and peaches are available now. Carter’s is also the place to find pre-picked carving, pie, and decorative pumpkins, and gourds. Also on site are the Country Store & Bakery, Mountain Grill, and Bold Rock Tap Room.

Chiles Peach Orchard, at the foot of the mountains in Crozet, sells white, yellow, and donut peaches, plus peach ice cream, milkshakes, and donuts, apples and other seasonal fruits and vegetables, a limited lunch menu, and all manner of fruit-laden goodies to take home.

The peach butter especially is not to be missed. Picnic tables—some covered—that allow for social distancing, and a small stage that kids can climb on make Chiles a lovely place for family relaxation.

Carter Mountain Orchard is open Sunday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Chiles Peach Orchard is open Mondays through Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Henley’s Orchard Joseph T. Henley, Sr., the commonwealth’s first fruit inspector, established Henley’s Orchard in Crozet in 1932. Joe originally purchased just five acres, for use as an apple orchard, but over the next 28 years he purchased and leased much more, expanding the apple orchard and establishing a peach orchard. Joseph passed the orchard to his son, Joseph T. Henley, Jr., who further expanded the operation, and then it passed on to his grandson, Tim Henley.

Today, Tim and his wife, Sarah, run the orchard, and now a cidery as well, with their children, Jacquelyn, Brook, and Steele. They offer over 25 pre-picked varieties of apples and 15 pre-picked varieties of peaches.

Vintage Virginia Apples and Albemarle Ciderworks Another Albemarle County Family, the Sheltons, has been farming in southern Albemarle County since 1986. That’s the year Bud and Mary Shelton, nearing retirement, bought a small farm in North Garden, named it Rural Ridge after Rural Plains, the Shelton family seat in eastern Virginia, and built their dream house. Along with their four children, Bud planted about 20 fruit trees—apple, pear, peach, and cherry.

Inspired by the heirloom apple tastings conducted at Monticello by author and apple historian Tom Burford, in 1992 the Sheltons purchased trees from Burford’s own orchard. Today their orchard has more than 200 cultivars, including the GoldRush, a late 20th century variety developed by Purdue University, and the MonArk, an early ripening cultivar from the University of Arkansas.

They have collected about three dozen peach varieties, plus plums, pears, cherries, nectarines and apricots, and they sell over 100 varieties of vintage fruit trees, many of them virtually unobtainable anywhere else. In 2000 the family founded Vintage Virginia Apples, and in 2009 Albemarle CiderWorks, now open, with social distancing precautions, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., seven days a week.

“There is nothing in our cider except apples,” Charlotte Shelton says about the 15 varieties the family offers for tasting and sale in North Garden. “No flavorings, no water. With one or two of them we add a tiny bit of sugar right at the end in order to modulate the acidity, but other than that there is nothing added.” Jupiter’s Legacy, Albemarle’s flagship cider, is a blend of apples that changes yearly in accordance with each year’s harvest. “We put into that all our best cider apples,” Shelton says.

What they get is a drink with a pleasingly astringent tannin and a tart apple finish. The 1817 cider, based on a recipe in a text on cultivating fruit trees and managing orchards published in 1817, is comprised of three different cider apples.

Albemarle’s tasting room is open 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Drumheller’s Orchard Everette and Eva Drumheller established Drumheller’s Orchard in Lovingston back in 1937, planting peach and apple trees in an abandoned orchard.

“My mother-in-law and father-in law bought this place,” Doris Drumheller remembers. “My husband went in business with his father from 16-17 years old until he passed away at 64.” That’s when Doris took it over in 2005, she says, “We’re just trying to carry on.” So they have.

“My in-laws were the first generation, my husband was the second,” Drumheller says, “and now my son is with me, so he’s the third generation and now his daughter is working with us, so actually we’re into the fourth generation here.

It’s hard work, but it’s a good life being on the farm.”

Nowadays Drumheller’s grows seven varieties of white peaches: Sugar May, White Lady, Klondike, Sugar Giant, Snow King, September Snow, and Snow White.

Their 12 varieties of yellow peaches include three types of Flaming Fury, Sentry, Starfire, John Boy, Sunhigh, Loring, Summer Breeze, Crest Haven, Laurol, and Victoria. They also grow five kinds of pluots (crosses between plum and apricots) and make apple butter and cider (apples are currently unavailable), peach jam and peach butter. The orchard is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Sundays from noon to 5:00 p.m.

The Market at Grelen Only three miles from James Madison’s Montpelier estate is a 1,000-acre tree nursery and pick-your-own farm, with a European-style garden shop, a casual farm-to-table cafe, and hiking trails.

The Market at Grelen is a lovely spot for a leisurely outdoor lunch, followed by a hike. Grelen also offers pre-picked and pick-your-own Victoria peaches, prepicked and pick-your-own Honeycrisp and Gala apples.

Grelen is open Wednesday through Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Nocontact curbside pickup is available for all online and phoned in orders. Grelen’s Casual Cafe is open for outdoor ordering Wednesday through Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Grelen’s trails connect to those at James Madison’s Montpelier, which have recently re-opened.

Planning and Planting the Home Orchard Fruit lovers dreaming of starting their own orchards can sign up online to join Penn State University pomologist Rich Marini and the Vintage Virginia Apples and Albemarle CiderWorks team on Saturday, October 17 from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for a day-long course on planning an orchard and planting fruit trees.

Topics to be discussed include site selection and preparation, water and protection options, varietal and rootstock selection, the physical planting of the trees including notes on high density planting, and care over the life of the tree.

The day will conclude with cider tasting and a tour of the orchard. Coffee and lunch will be included, and questions welcomed!
