THIS WEEK Virginia has been a bright spot in the otherwise utterly depressing national political landscape recently. Our Democrat-trifecta government has rewritten the state’s rulebook—for the better, if you ask me. The Dems abolished the death penalty, invested in clean energy, spent money on schools, and more (p. 16). Now, they’ll have to defend all that progress in this November’s election, with both the governor’s mansion and the House of Delegates up for grabs. Get out there and vote, people. So much is at stake.

If you sense that I prefer one party over the other in this fall’s contest—well, that’s because I do. I think one side is right about most things and the other side is wrong about pretty much everything.

In putting together this week’s election preview, I did my best to give an honest account of where the Republicans and the Democrats stand on the issues facing the state, but I’m sure my own biases will come through at some point. How can one possibly stay unbiased? The question has always dogged political journalism, and has come to the forefront again and again in the last five years.

Pulitzer Prize-winning CBS News journalist Wesley Lowery has been an insightful commentator on this subject. “I would be deeply skeptical of anyone whose job it is to examine our world who does not develop educated opinions along the way,” Lowery wrote in January. “Someone having or expressing an opinion does not mean they are not capable of providing fair and professional coverage on a topic.”

I hope I’ve more or less provided fair and professional coverage this week. But if, somewhere in there, you get a sense that the writer is rooting for the Democrats, I hope you’ll remember this quote from another of our sharpest political commentators: “Reality,” said Stephen Colbert, “has a well-known liberal bias.”—Ben Hitchcock

THE NEW MAP IS LIKELY TO HAVE THE FOLLOWING EXTREMELY DAMAGING OUTCOMES: §

Incentivizing developers to tear down homes and build apartments throughout all of Charlottesville’s neighborhoods.

§

Doubling Charlottesville’s population with no plan for the necessary infrastructure, services, or schools.

§

Failing to create affordability. Experts, including the Planning Commission’s own consulting firm, have acknowledged that little if any affordable housing will result from the new plan. Developer-led approaches to affordability have a long track-record of failure. The plan is fundamentally flawed.

C’VILLE’S CITIZENS DESERVE CHANGES THAT MAKE OUR CITY A BETTER PLACE TO LIVE. For example, Council could choose to develop a sizeable community land trust, build affordable housing on city property, implement thoughtful “soft” upzoning, and redevelop vacant commercial space in excellent locations.

Nearly a year after booting former CEO Brad Sheffield, JAUNT hired Ted Rieck as its new boss. Rieck has worked in transit for more than 30 years, most recently as CEO of the Metropolitan Tulsa Transit Authority. Sheffield was asked to step down in December after it was revealed he had spent company money on luxury hotels, expensive meals, plane tickets, and other “beyond reasonable” expenditures.

Staff churn continues at City Hall—the latest departure is Assistant Police Chief James Mooney. Mooney’s had a whirlwind couple of weeks. The long-serving cop announced his retirement in August, only for Police Chief RaShall Brackney to be abruptly fired a few days later. In the wake of that departure, Mooney was promoted to interim chief. But he’s decided not to stick around, and Captain Tito Durrette will take the reins.

There’s almost certainly more turnover coming. On Tuesday evening, City Council held a closed meeting to discuss “urgent personnel matters,” which in the past has been a sure sign that someone is headed for the hills.

The new Virginia Redistricting Commission is in trouble. The bipartisan group, made up of eight Republicans and eight Democrats, was tasked with redrawing Virginia’s voting districts, both at the state and federal levels.

But the two sides haven’t managed to reach any sort of compromise so far, and missed their first deadline to submit maps. Mackenzie Babichenko, the commission’s Republican co-chair, told VPM that the group hasn’t been able to overcome “a fundamental lack of trust of each other’s motives.” The committee says it’ll be back in action on Thursday, hoping to smooth things over and get back to work. If members can’t eventually find a compromise, the map-drawing will fall to the Supreme Court of Virginia.

wo weeks ago, the University Police Department announced the establishment of its Community Oriented Police Squad (COPS), which will increase police presence on the Corner and surrounding areas. The move comes after a handful of violent incidents in the area, including an accidental gun discharge inside Boylan Heights, had UVA parents concerned about their kids.

On October 6, a group of law students released a letter addressed to university President Jim Ryan, UPD Chief Tim Longo, the UPD, and the UVA community denouncing the COPS unit. The letter accuses the school of prioritizing “parents’ concerns over the wellbeing of the larger Charlottesville community.” The letter states that, according to UPD crime logs, the recent crime levels are comparable to those of September 2019. However, parents are now able to receive emergency alerts—they get an email when crime occurs inside or outside of university areas.

Previously, students had to sign their parents up through their own UVA Alerts account.

The letter reminds readers that increasing police presence does not decrease violent crime and “goes directly against the desires of University students,” citing a 2020 Student Council survey that reported that students of color have felt harassed by UPD officers on Grounds. The letter calls for UPD to reverse its decision to increase police presence in student areas and to dismantle the COPS program; for UVA to “make efforts to address the root causes of violent crime by promoting social and economic development in the Charlottesville community;” and for UPD to be more transparent about the number of complaints received and how the department addresses instances of police harassment. At press time, the letter had over 120 student signatures and 11 signatures from student organizations.—Amelia Delphos

Answering the call

With a recent influx of cash from the city, The B.U.C.K. Squad hopes to increase staff and establish civilian patrols and community policing programs.

Dickerson pushed back on Burton’s characterization of the group’s activities, and said the group gave Burton $14,000 for a memorial for Washington.

Now, Hayes emphasizes the positive steps the squad has taken. It not only receives calls about gun violence but also domestic violence, substance abuse, missing children, and other emergencies. Since January, Hayes says the group has successfully intervened in 49 conflicts.

“There have been a lot of articles or narratives saying that [the squad] is out there but nothing’s changed,” she says. “But the community knows them and they will call them.”

The organization’s board of directors is working to expand its community programs, which aim to tackle the root causes of gun violence. Over the summer, the squad regularly hosted events for youth, in hopes of deterring them from getting involved in illegal activities. It also sponsored a run with Prolyfyck Run Crew, and worked with a strategist to revamp its website and so-

cial media accounts. With the new grant, the squad also hopes to afford a physical headquarters, which will include mediation centers and wraparound services.

ast month, the Charlottesville Police Department says it responded to several shots-fired incidents, including at Boylan Heights and the Westhaven public housing complex. At least 250 shots-fired incidents have occurred this year, reports the department.

To reduce gun violence in the city’s predominantly Black communities, The B.U.C.K.—Brothers United to Cease the Killing—Squad began intervening in conflicts in January, attempting to arrive at the scene of a tense situation and talk down potential aggressors before anyone started shooting. However, the squad has faced difficulties responding to calls and starting community programs, due to a reported lack of funding. City Council donated about $20,000 to the group for conflict resolution training in February, and the violence interrupters have had to rely largely on community donations since then, which they say only cover basic expenses.

Last week, City Council voted 3-2 to give the group $50,000 in off-cycle funding, which The B.U.C.K Squad says it will use to recruit more violence interrupters, as well as establish civilian patrols and community policing programs in all of the city’s predominantly Black communities. (Currently, the group focuses on South First Street.) “[Members] all work full-time jobs— some of them two or three jobs,” says board chair Kimberly Hayes. “It takes a lot of commitment and dedication. A lot of them were working without getting paid.”

Though the squad started off with around 14 members, it has dropped to about 10. It plans to compensate current members for unpaid hours, and potentially hire a few as full-time violence interrupters.

The grant comes shortly after a change in leadership at the nonprofit. Last month,

founder Pertelle Gilmore issued a statement confirming that he severed all ties with the squad in June. Herb Dickerson has taken his place as executive director.

“The draw with the squad is that a lot of them are from the streets...With that, some of them deal with a lot of trauma, and just have personal issues,” explains Hayes. “[Gilmore] and the squad came to an agreement that they thought it would be best that he deal with his issues, and the work continues.”

During City Council’s October 4 meeting, Councilor Heather Hill explained that she, along with Vice-Mayor Sena Magill, recently met with members of the squad to discuss concerns they had heard from community members, but didn’t go into detail about the issues.

In response to these concerns, the squad developed an accountability and grievance policy, which explains how community members can file complaints, Hayes explained to the councilors. The B.U.C.K. Squad is also working with the Public Housing Association of Residents and the Charlottesville Redevelopment and Housing Authority to establish a monthly reporting policy.

“It wasn’t just one individual that I understood there were some issues with, but I don’t want to get into the particulars on here,” said PHAR board chair Joy Johnson.

Councilor Michael Payne and Mayor Nikuyah Walker voted against the $50,000 donation. “I would just want to have clear, lockstep assurance that CRHA and PHAR are all on the same page in terms of what they’re doing,” said Payne. Walker did not explain the reason for her vote.

C-VILLE reported in May that Darnell Burton, the father of James “Buck” Washington, for whom the squad is named, accused the group of misappropriating the money it had raised. “They’re not doing what they’re supposed to be doing,” Burton said. “They’re buying all kinds of sweatsuits, traveling, going out to eat—just personal stuff.”

In stone City takes notes from co-designer of Memorial to Enslaved Laborers

s Charlottesville continues to grapple with its long history of slavery and white supremacy, the city’s Historic Resources Committee is putting descendants of enslaved people at the forefront of the conversation. Since last year, the committee has met with around three dozen descendants, seeking their thoughts on how to best memorialize the thousands of people who were bought and sold in Court Square. Last February, local resident Richard Allan confessed to throwing the former slave auction marker into the James River, frustrated with the city for not erecting a better tribute.

Before continuing with the descendant engagement process, the committee sought guidance from architect Dr. Mabel O. Wilson during its October 8 meeting.

For several years, the Columbia University professor engaged with students, staff, faculty, alumni, local residents, and descendants of enslaved people as she helped to design the University of Virginia’s Memorial to Enslaved Laborers, which was completed last spring.

When UVA put together the MEL design team in 2016, it did not have an exact budget, building site, or design in mind for the memorial. “That was a huge risk, but because it was open and wasn’t hemmed in by more conventional processes, it allowed for invention,” said Wilson.

To gather input from a wide range of university community members, the team hosted different types of public forums— including small groups, large conferences, and catered lunches and dinners—at easily accessible locations around town, like historically Black churches and the Jefferson School. They also sent out online surveys to ensure that people who did not live in Charlottesville had their voices heard.

“We were constantly negotiating and listening and understanding what it was that people wanted or expected,” said Wilson.

The team chose to build the memorial near—but not on—the UVA Lawn to help Black community members feel comfortable visiting it, explained Wilson.

“We were understanding as we started going along that folks in the Black community think of UVA as a plantation,” she said. “It’s still complicated.”

Pointing to the limited space available at Number Nothing, the former slave auction marker site, committee member Jalane Schmidt suggested the city look at additional locations associated with slavery, including Court Square Park, Albemarle County Circuit Court, Levy Opera House, and the former site of Swan Tavern.

Regardless of the memorial’s location, it must communicate the humanity of enslaved people, Wilson stressed. In addition to listing the known names of people enslaved at the university, the MEL includes those known by their occupation or kinship relation. It also features an excerpt from a writing by Isabella Gibbons, who was enslaved at the university and became an educator after emancipation, “speaking for the people who aren’t there,” she said.

“This is tough because it’s an auction block. It’s ground zero for that process of dehumanization,” said Wilson. “Given what this is marking, it might then call for other kinds of sites to be marked.”

Wilson strongly encouraged the committee to be open and patient as it brings a new memorial to fruition.

“Oftentimes, it’s a one and done. We’ve got that out the way—let’s move on,” she said.

“But in Charlottesville, there’s a lot of ways in which the history of the city is being really rethought and leveraged to understand what’s not there, what’s not been said.”

“I think you guys are a model for how people can do this work.”

or the last two years, Democrats have controlled Virginia’s state Senate and House of Delegates, and a Democrat has served as governor. The party has used those majorities to reshape the state’s laws.

The Dems abolished the death penalty and legalized marijuana. They made it easier to vote in a variety of ways, including repealing Virginia’s mandatory photo ID law. They

passed a major bill called the Clean Economy Act, which will force the state’s utility companies to start adopting renewable energy.

They increased spending on education, including offering free community college for everyone in the state who makes below a certain income. They passed a moderate minimum wage increase—currently $7.25 an hour, it’ll be $12 an hour by 2024.

In order to see these reforms through, the Democrats will have to remain in power. Next month, all 100 House of Delegates members

are up for another two-year term; Democrats currently hold a 55 to 45 advantage in the chamber. And former governor Terry McAuliffe is hoping to win a second term in the state’s highest office. He’s up against wellfunded businessman Glenn Youngkin.

Virginia politics is old hat for McAuliffe.

He was the state’s governor from 2014 to 2018. He chaired the Democratic National Committee from 2001 to 2005, and led Hilary Clinton’s 2008 presidential campaign.

He breezed through a Democratic primary

this summer. Youngkin spent 25 years at high-end private equity firm The Carlyle Group, including two years as its CEO. He spent $5 million of his own money during his primary campaign, eventually triumphing in a ranked-choice convention.

Throughout the campaign, Youngkin has emphasized McAuliffe’s insider status, trying to position himself as a new face whose business experience would help him run the state.

McAuliffe, on the other hand, has tried his best to cast Youngkin as a right-wing radical,

McAuliffe has campaigned on raising teacher pay and expanding public preschool options. At the second debate, he said, “I don’t think parents should be telling schools what they should teach,” a quip the Youngkin campaign has seized on.

Youngkin has parroted national Republicans’ promises to ban critical race theory in schools. He’s said he’ll direct the Department of Education to protect advanced math classes and other academic tracking practices, and create 20 new charter schools.

Elections

Restoring voting rights to 173,000 felons was among the signature achievements of McAuliffe’s first term. Now, he hopes to go a step further, enshrining automatic restoration of voting rights in the Virginia constitution.

Youngkin dragged his feet in accepting the results of the 2020 presidential election, before admitting that there wasn’t “material fraud.” He wants to launch an Election Integrity Task Force, which would include requiring IDs to vote and the purging of voter rolls monthly.

Health care

McAuliffe wants to strengthen Medicaid and enlist federal money to lower health insurance premiums. He also says he’ll work to put Roe v. Wade abortion protections in the Virginia constitution, making it more difficult to overturn down the line.

Youngkin opposes the state’s recent Medicaid expansion, and has gone so far as calling the expansion “sad.” He has described himself as “unabashedly pro-life,” and says he’ll tighten abortion laws if elected.

Environment

McAuliffe hopes to accelerate Virginia’s transition to clean energy, aiming to get the state to 100 percent clean energy by 2035. Along those lines, he says he’ll restructure the state’s regulatory system to incentivize clean energy innovation.

Youngkin’s economic plan includes suspending the state’s gas tax. He opposes the Virginia Clean Economy Act, which Democrats passed last year, and has said that a renewable-energy-focused economic overhaul is not “doable.”

Herring has empowered his office to investigate police departments for civil rights violations, cleared the state’s backlog of untested rape kits, and defended Virginia’s new gun restrictions in court against challenges from the NRA. His Republican opponent, Jason Miyares, is currently a delegate representing Virginia Beach. Miyares’ top priorities are to “punish criminals and protect victims,” fight illegal immigration, and support the police.

These races are likely to go as the governor’s race goes. In the last decade, split ticket voting has become vanishingly rare in ever-more-polarized American politics.

In the 2008 presidential election, 83 of the nation’s 435 House of Representatives districts voted for a presidential candidate and a House candidate of opposing parties.

In 2020, just 16 districts split their tickets. In Virginia, three of the four gubernatorial elections held from 1994 to 2006 saw split-ticket winners, but all of the last three victorious governors have brought their party’s lieutenant governor and attorney general into power as well. Unless the governor’s race is very, very close, expect the winner to bring his down-ballot compatriots with him.

Criminal justice

Early voting In the 2020 election, 2.8 million Virginians voted early or voted by mail. The presidential contest combined with concerns about the pandemic meant that early voting totals smashed all previous records. So far, in 2021, 436,000 Virginians have voted early, including 8,400 in Albemarle and 2,800 in Charlottesville. County residents can vote early in-person at the County Office Building. City residents should head to the City Hall Annex. Early voting closes October 30, the Saturday before the election.

McAuliffe initially suggested he would be open to ending qualified immunity for police officers, but walked that statement back at the first debate. McAuliffe says he’s never been in favor of defunding the police. He does want to invest in body-worn camera programs.

Youngkin wants to replace everyone currently sitting on the parole board, which Republicans feel has been too generous in granting parole in recent years. He also says he’ll protect qualified immunity.

longside the McAuliffe vs. Youngkin clash, voters will also choose between Republicans and Democrats for lieutenant governor and attorney general.

Virginia’s lieutenant governor is essentially the vice president of the state, serving as the tie-breaking vote in the state Senate and the first in line for power should the governor become incapacitated. Additionally, five of the last 10 LGs have later become governor.

The Republican nominee for lieutenant governor is Winsome Sears, a Marine who served as a state delegate from 2002 to 2004.

Since deciding not to run for reelection, she’s sat on the Virginia Board of Education, worked for Donald Trump’s reelection, and now owns an appliance company in Winchester. The Democrats are running Hala Ayala, an immigrant who’s been a delegate since 2017. This year, she spearheaded a bill requiring the Virginia Employment Commission to establish a paid family leave program by 2024. The victor will be the second woman to ever win a Virginia statewide election—Mary Sue Terry served as attorney general from 1986 to 1993.

Democrats have triumphed in every statewide election in Virginia since 2012. In 2017, Ralph Northam won by nine points, and last year Joe Biden won the state by 10. This election will be a test of just how blue Virginia has become—midterms traditionally see votes swing back toward the party that lost the most recent presidential election. If McAuliffe can weather the Republicans’ midterm bounce, it’ll bode well for future Dem dominance in Virginia.

Third-party candidate Princess Blanding will be on the ballot as well, running under the Liberation Party. Blanding’s brother, Marcus-David Peters, was killed by Richmond police in 2018, and Blanding hopes to enact a variety of progressive criminal justice reforms, including ending qualified immunity for police officers, something both McAuliffe and Youngkin oppose.

Both major party candidates have raised huge amounts of money—each had eclipsed the $30 million mark by August 31, a full two months before election day. In July and August, McAuliffe pulled in $11.5 million and Youngkin added $15.7 million to his chest. By contrast, four years ago Ralph Northam and Ed Gillespie raised $7.4 million and $3.3 million, respectively, during the July and August filing period. Both candidates have raised the vast majority of their money from large donations.

irginia’s House of Delegates plays a vital role in the state’s lawmaking— the chamber’s 100 representatives are responsible for both originating legislation and voting on the state Senate’s bills. A conservative Republican from the Shenandoah Valley, Runion says he’ll “stand firm” for Second Amendment rights and abortion restrictions. Runion’s a business owner with an accounting background, who says he was initially compelled to run for public office to bring some “fiscal sanity” to Richmond.

In 2021, Runion sponsored a bill that allows people to apply for concealed handgun permits virtually, since courts were closed during the pandemic.

In the 2021 session, she introduced HB 1900, which makes it more difficult for landlords to evict tenants, and forces landlords to pay tenants back in the case of an illegal eviction.

Hamilton is the first Republican to mount a campaign in the deep-blue 57th District in 16 years. Bell, a former prosecutor and longtime delegate, represents chunks of Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene, and Rockingham counties. As delegate, one of Bell’s focuses has been imposing harsher penalties on those guilty of sexual assault, domestic violence, and sexual crimes against children. During his term, Bell has received awards from the Virginia State Police, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, and the American Conservative Union. In 2021, Bell introduced a bill that expanded the eligibility for drivers to get a special communication needs indicator placed on their vehicle registration. The bill passed unanimously.

Sara Ratcliffe (D)

Touting her “rural roots and Virginia values,” Ratcliffe hopes to bring her experience in advocacy to build a better 58th District. Ratcliffe says she’s felt a lifelong calling to “look out for those whose voices are not heard in government,” and intends to focus on health care, empowering small businesses, and finding better solutions to public safety concerns that involve social workers and mental health professionals rather than armed police.

hree candidates—Democrats Brian Pinkston and Juandiego Wade, and independent Yas Washington—are running for two open seats on Charlottesville’s City Council. Current mayor Nikuyah Walker initially announced a run for reelection, but dropped out in September.

Wade is a transportation planner and career counselor by trade who has served on the Charlottesville City School Board for 16 years. He’s been a valued voice in town for a long time, and serves or has served on the boards of United Way, ReadyKids, 100 Black Men of Central Virginia, Cultivate Charlottesville, and Child Health Partnership.

Wade says his top priorities are criminal justice reform and helping to create more affordable housing in the region. He wants to explore creating non-police emergency

Pinkston is a UVA project manager who also has a Ph.D. in philosophy. He’s currently the vice-chair of the Charlottesville Democratic Party. Pinkston narrowly missed out on a City Council seat in the 2019 election, and is back for another try.

Pinkston’s top goals include restoring “a level of collegiality” to City Council’s operations. Like Wade, he emphasizes economic recovery. He’d like to see a stronger Police Civilian Review Board that takes advantage of the new powers outlined by the general assembly, and supports diverting some police responsibilities to Region Ten. He told C-VILLE this summer that the key to criminal justice reform is “to listen to the people actually affected, and not just do progressive wish-fulfillment.”

The two victorious candidates will serve four-year terms on council.

Other local elections The Albemarle County Board of Supervisors has three of its six seats open, and three candidates are running unopposed in their respective districts. Incumbents Ned Gallaway and Diantha McKeel will each return for another term, and physicist and lawyer Jim Andrews will join the board. The Albemarle County

School Board also has three incumbents running for reelection, each unopposed.

In Charlottesville, unopposed Commonwealth’s Attorney Joe Platania will secure a second four-year term after a stiff challenge in the summer’s Democratic primary. The city’s treasurer, commissioner

of revenue, and sheriff are also running unopposed for reelection.

Five candidates are competing for three seats on the Charlottesville School Board. The candidates will meet at a forum on Thursday, October 14. Check back here next week for our coverage of the school board race.

Moses serves as a faculty senator at UVA, and volunteers at various community organizations including Habitat for Humanity and PACEM. If elected, he says he’ll advocate for health justice as a right for all Virginians, support a move toward renewable energy, and fight for equitable funding for rural Virginia schools.

Before entering politics, Farris co-owned and served as vice president of the Lynchburg Livestock Market, managing farms and ranches, and operating a retail store. Farris boasts staunch anti-abortion views and opposes government regulation of property and excessive taxation. In the 2021 session, Fariss introduced an unsuccessful bill that would have made it a felony to steal parts from motor vehicles.

York. The influx of new customers, as well as the growing popularity of shoe engineers on Instagram, inspired a new direction for SpeedyCustomz.

In addition to pivoting toward higherquality sneakers with higher-quality leather and paint, Mylz is adding a sewing machine to his toolkit: He wants to begin tearing sneakers down to their base parts and reconstructing them to order, from scratch.

Clients’ requests range from something as simple as the Nike swoosh being cut out and reattached backwards, to a completely redesigned shoe.

SpeedyCustomz founder Mylz uses a sharpie and lots of patience to draw his designs by hand.

An hour and a half later, while on the phone discussing Old Dominion University homework, his friend interrupted engineering talk to ask if Mylz had checked his Twitter recently.

Mylz unlocked his phone and saw the shoes had gone viral.

“I looked at the analytics on Twitter, where it shows how many people looked at it, and I had over three million views basically in 24 hours,” says Mylz. “I was so overwhelmed.”

That tweet brought in a flood of new orders by sneakerheads from California to New

o the average Charlottesvillian, a pair of Jordans probably looks like sneakers. To local engineering student Mylz, they are one crafting knife and an airbrush away from a work of art.

SpeedyCustomz, Mylz’s online shoe design and customization business, began with a permanent marker on a friend’s Vans, and evolved into elaborate footwear masterpieces. One of the Albemarle High School alum’s first orders was a pair of sneakers he themed around Travis Scott’s album Astroworld. This brightly colored commission, which featured one-eyed teddy bears grinning from the toe caps with the album title trailing down the side, required meticulous design work layered between sealing blasts of a heat gun that took Mylz over three weeks to perfect.

“Everything I was doing was by hand,” says Mylz. “I didn’t have a stencil...I had to do a perfect one, in one take.”

A longtime drawing enthusiast, Mylz had never used a paintbrush before he opened SpeedyCustomz. The familiar leering face of Heath Ledger’s Joker, surrounded by a chorus of painted “Ha Ha Ha” on a friend’s pair of shoes, was Mylz’s first-ever painting—and on the unforgiving white canvas of shoe leather, there was no room for mistakes.

“With painting, most people already know to use a limited amount of brushes, and they know how to blend the colors by working from the brightest to darkest,” says Mylz. “I learned all that by painting on a shoe.”

As his online business began to gain traction, Mylz decided to tweet an image of a pair of hand-painted shoes he had customized for a popular Instagram model. It would be nice, he thought as he carefully edited the photo, to get a few hundred likes; maybe even earn an extra order or two for SpeedyCustomz.

ased on the astonishing number of bakers and bakeries in Char­ lottes­ville, the city appears to have a voracious appetite for carbs. A quick search on Google lists almost 30 area bak­ eries, cake spots, bagel makers, patisseries, and farmers’ market stands that offer a wide variety of floury treats. What follows is a sampling of a few of them.

Norkeita Goins of Caked Up Cville be­ gan baking to pass the time when she was furloughed at the beginning of the pan­ demic. “I started baking again, posting on Facebook, and I made an Instagram,” says Goins. “It seems like it happened overnight…it doesn’t feel like a whole year has passed already.” Goins uses abstract lay­ ers of bright buttercream, curated sprinkles, and gold details in sweets that stand out. For fall, she’s planning a pumpkin oreo cheese­ cake cupcake, and will incorporate Chinese five-spice powder into her bakes to accen­ tuate the season’s flavors. With a line cook origin story, he made bread at C&O Restaurant, on top of food prep and dinner service. His penchant for pastry landed him a gig at Albemarle Baking Com­ pany, and as his time and his experience increased, so did his creativity. Reynolds’ current offerings include a spiced pear but­ ter and marsala zabaglione eclair, an Ital­ ian-style whipped custard piped inside pâte à choux, macarons, and more. She mills, soaks, and sprouts the specialty seeds, nuts, legumes, and flours she uses, and, with incredible mindfulness to nutrient density and wellness, she creates an option to in­ dulge without compromise. “I so delight in being able to share delicious, gentle food with folks who have different dietary restric­ tions, as I myself have been on a healing journey for some time,” says Hall.

She says she’ll be bringing her signature turmeric black pepper coffee cake back to the IX Art Park Saturday market. She also loves to work with carob in the fall, and its complex caramel and coffee flavor might be the perfect complement to a cardamom and green apple pastry that she has in the works. Vincent Derquenne is not simply a baker, he’s one of the chef-partners behind Bizou, Luce, Bang!, The Space, and Crush Pad Wines, along with Tim Burgess. What you may not know is that Derquenne has been producing all the croissants for Bizou’s brunch for the majority of the past 10 years—by hand. Humbly, he says he’s turned over croissant production to a recently pur­ chased sheeter, but transitioning from hand lamination is no easy feat for the French chef.

Question yourself about how you might have gone off course, but then actually make adjustments and atonements. As you do, keep in mind these principles: 1. An apparent mistake could lead you to a key insight or revelation. 2. An obstruction to the flow may prod you to open your mind and heart to a liberating possibility. 3. A snafu might motivate you to get back to where you belong. 4. A mess could show you something important you’ve been missing.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): In her novel We Have Always Lived in the Castle, Sagittarian author Shirley Jackson wrote, “Today my winged horse is coming, and I am carrying you off to the moon, and on the moon we will eat rose petals.” I wonder what you would do if you received a message like that—an invitation to wander out on fanciful or mysterious adventures. I hope you’d be receptive. I hope you wouldn’t say, “There are so such things as flying horses. It’s impossible to fly to the moon and eat rose petals.” Even if you don’t typically entertain such whimsical notions, the time is favorable to do so now. I bet you will be pleased with the unexpected grace they bring your way.

“We also make sure that we experience the process of designing and building our own new house every two to three years. That allows us to live through and improve our process as much as we can. We test the new products and live with them instead of just being handed a brochure from a salesman. We are in our sixth home we have built for ourselves, and I think our customers will agree that it has paid off in the quality of home we build.”

Another fully custom builder participating in this year’s Parade is Bramante Homes. Billing themselves as small, local, nimble, and personal, this employee-run builder focuses on Albemarle and Augusta Counties. By limiting the number of homes they build each year, Bramante makes sure clients have their full attention and access to the very best trades and vendor partners throughout construction.
