NEWS Like taking (pot) candy from a baby Virginia has seen a steep rise in little kids accidentally eating marijuana-infused candy, according to the Virginia Poison Center. You can’t blame them—many marijuana candies come in colorful packaging and look just like any other sweet treat at first glance. The Poison Center says that in 2019, just 13 people called to report adverse reactions. Seven months into 2021, that number is 78. Marijuana edibles haven’t led to any reported deaths in the region. Word to the wise: Keep your pot gummy worms on a high shelf.

The National Academy of Sciences has agreed to conduct a comprehensive study of gold mining in Virginia. Environmental activists and legislators called for the study earlier this year, after international gold mining companies started to sniff around Virginia’s gold belt, which runs through the center of the state. In this

year’s legislative session, the General Assembly passed a law banning gold mining—a dangerous and invasive process—until the study was complete.

“It is without doubt that metals mining negatively impacts communities and their water supplies,” says Stacy Lovelace of Virginia Pipeline Resisters

hen the Centers for Disease Control’s eviction moratorium expired on July 31, more than 10 million people across the country were at risk of losing their homes. But on August 3, after Representative Cori Bush camped out on the steps of the U.S. Capitol in protest for four days, the CDC extended the moratorium until October 3, giving struggling tenants more time to receive rent relief from their state and local governments.

In Virginia, landlords are once again required to notify tenants about available rent relief and apply on their behalf before proceeding with an eviction, thanks to legislation passed this week during the General Assembly’s special session.

However, the 60-day order only applies to areas with substantial or high transmission of COVID-19—including Charlottesville and most surrounding counties— and local housing advocates worry it will not hold up for long.

“Right now there’s just a lot of uncertainty,” says Caroline Klosko, a housing attorney for the Legal Aid Justice Center. “[The moratorium] has already been challenged in court, and we think there’s a good chance the Supreme Court will overturn it before it expires.”

“Also there’s some uncertainty about how the level of transmission in the community is supposed to be proved—who’s supposed to prove it?” she says.

If transmission in an area drops below “substantial” for two weeks, then the CDC moratorium no longer applies, explains Lydia Brunk, co-chair of Charlottesville Democratic Socialists of America’s housing justice committee.

“I’m really glad to see that these protections have been reinstated for a little while longer... but if we actually make progress against the virus, we end up with another problem on our hands as a consequence,” says Brunk.

For the time being, housing advocates urge tenants to take advantage of current state protections. Rent relief and payment continuances are still available to those impacted by the pandemic.

LAJC has recently hired someone to assist residents with their rental relief applications for free, Klosko says. “There have

been access problems, especially with the Spanish-speaking community, and there’s a lot less access to the internet among lowincome people,” she says.

Last month, Charlottesville City Council also allocated $300,000 in American Rescue Plan funds to LAJC to create an eviction prevention pilot program. Though the funding is not enough to guarantee a lawyer for every city resident facing eviction, Klosko says it will allow LAJC to hire another housing attorney, as well as ramp up its community outreach and representation of individual tenants.

Charlottesville DSA—joined by several other activist groups—is currently pushing for Albemarle County to enact a similar program with its ARP funds. “Historically, the county has had twice as many evictions, so we would like to see them pass twice as much funding,” says Brunk.

However, County Supervisor and Vice Chair Donna Price says she would rather focus on funding rent relief programs.

“I am personally more interested in helping tenants and landlords, than I am funding attorneys involved in the process,” says Price.

“There’s always going to be folks for whom rent relief and other services are too slow for them to avoid being evicted, who don’t qualify for whatever reason, or who just don’t hear about it,” explains Brunk.

“When they hit the court system, that’s our last chance to reach them and give them a chance to stay in their homes.”

“If you don’t provide publicity for it [and] make it easy for people to access, then people aren’t actually going to get the money,” she adds.

n Friday, UVA announced that all students, faculty, staff, and contract workers, both vaccinated and unvaccinated, will be required to wear a mask when on UVA property.

The policy took effect at the beginning of this week, and the school says it’ll re-evaluate in September. The university made this announcement as cases of the delta variant surge across the country.

“This policy will allow us to start the year at full capacity and reduce the likelihood of a spike in cases driven by the delta variant and a coming together of students from many places,” an email from Executive Vice Presidents Liz Magill and J.J. Davis says.

“Over the next few weeks we will be monitoring case counts, hospitalizations, and other conditions, with a goal of modifying or lifting this masking policy for fully vaccinated people by Sept. 6.”

Under the new policy, masks are required at all university-owned or leased public spaces like academic or administrative buildings, libraries, labs, dining halls, intramural/recreation facilities, and UVA Health properties. Students are not required to wear masks in dorms, and the policy does not apply to people alone in a closed space like an office.

Additionally, all students, faculty, and staff are required to be vaccinated unless they have a medical or religious reason that prevents it. Those who are unable to be vaccinated will be required to undergo weekly testing and wear a mask once the temporary masking rule expires.

“The university has an obligation to protect its students and workers from COVID-19 beyond this temporary mask mandate,” Student Council President Abel Liu says, pointing to hazard pay, asymptomatic testing, mental health resources, and readily accessible vaccines as other key initiatives for the school.

“UVA is one of the wealthiest universities in the country, and these resources should be readily available for its students and workers.”

Other state universities—including Virginia Tech, VCU, and James Madison— have adopted mask mandates for returning students and faculty. The restrictions align with current recommendations from the CDC, which advise everyone to wear a mask indoors in public regardless of vaccination status.

The reaction to the new policy has largely been positive. “The pandemic isn’t over yet,” says Cheyenne Butler, a rising secondyear student. “We still have multiple variants going around, and I think the best way to keep us safe—students and faculty and also the greater Charlottesville community—is to still wear masks.”

Liu agrees. He says that although most of the university community is vaccinated, only 61.6 percent of the adult population is vaccinated in Charlottesville. “With students pouring into UVA from all over the world, we must be mindful of the needs of Charlottesville residents. UVA students are guests in their city.”

Of course, the mandate is a reminder that much of the summer’s progress in combating the virus has slipped away. “I remember the first day when we could come into the office without wearing a mask,” says David Kittlesen, an associate professor of biology. “It was just joyful.”

After two and a half semesters and two summer sessions on Zoom, Kittlesen is excited for a return to in-person instruction. Last week he checked out the room where he is slated to teach first-year biology to over 400 students in the fall. “I pictured everybody there, no masks, and me without a mask,” he says. That’s not to be, at least at first. “With freedom comes responsibilities,” the professor says, “and this is a responsibility that we have now that seems reasonable to me.”

On the rise Health district hosts town hall as delta variant spreads

As the highly contagious delta variant continues to spread, local health officials are urging unvaccinated residents to get the shot.

is currently experiencing both substantial and high community transmission—excluding Louisa County, which has moderate transmission.

“Anyone who is unvaccinated, or if you have a medical condition that puts you at high risk because you’re immunocompromised…[we] strongly recommend you wear a mask,” said Bonds. “Or if you are living with someone or a caregiver for someone who fits that definition.”

This week, Albemarle County began requiring masks again inside county office buildings and facilities. Charlottesville has not announced any plans yet to reinstate its mask mandate. Last week, Governor Ralph Northam announced that state employees will be required to get vaccinated (and show proof) by September 1. Those who refuse to get the shot will have to get tested for the virus and show negative results every week.

To date, around 70 percent of employees affected by the new requirement are fully vaccinated. “To the people who have hesitated, who may be worried about side ef-

fects—the time for waiting is over. Millions of people around the world have been vaccinated and we are fine,” said Northam.

During the latter portion of the town hall, the panelists answered questions previously submitted by area residents. Those tuning in to the Zoom meeting were also able to call in to ask questions.

In response to concerns about the side effects children may experience from the vaccine, local pediatrician Paige Perriello said they typically do not get a fever or body aches like adults do, “but that’s certainly still possible, and we all know that’s the immune system doing what’s its supposed to do.”

UVA pediatrician Jeff Vergales also emphasized the importance of students, teachers, and staff wearing masks in K-12 schools—regardless of vaccination status—along with other mitigation strategies like social distancing. Charlottesville and Albemarle County school districts have already announced mask mandates, but other school systems around the state have made masks optional. (Northam has said that schools are legally obligated to

follow the CDC’s universal masking recommendations.)

“We have loads of data now coming in from the pandemic in the last year that mitigation strategies in schools work,” Vergales said. “Schools were not the mass spreader events that your house would be, [or] that family gatherings would be.”

Perriello later answered questions about the delta variant, explaining that it has nearly the same symptoms as the original variant, including fever, cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, loss of taste or smell, and fatigue.

However, it does not seem to affect children more severely than other strains.

“If you’re vaccinated and you get a breakthrough infection, it’s really often a mild respiratory type of symptoms,” added Bonds.

All panelists urged vaccinated people to talk with their unvaccinated family members and friends about getting the shot.

“One of the best things that can happen for people is to have conversations with people they trust, and it can be very helpful to hear from people who were hesitant themselves,” said Perriello.

hanks to high vaccination rates, coronavirus cases have remained largely in the single digits in the Blue Ridge Health District over the past three months. But in recent weeks, the highly contagious delta variant—which may cause more severe illness than other strains of the virus—has caused cases to spike. On July 26, the district saw 30 new cases, the highest since late April.

Last Thursday, local health officials and doctors stressed the importance of vaccination at a Blue Ridge Health District town hall event. While there have been a small number of breakthrough cases among vaccinated people in the U.S., nearly all hospitalizations and deaths are occurring among unvaccinated people.

“If you’re vaccinated, the vaccine is working—it’s keeping you out of the hospital and lowering your symptoms,” explained Dr. Denise Bonds, medical director of the health district. “But we have found through studies that if you’re vaccinated and infected with the delta variant, you are capable of spreading that virus to other individuals.”

“We can make the assumption that most of the cases we are seeing in our area are likely delta,” she added.

In Charlottesville, about 60 percent of residents have received at least one dose of the vaccine, and almost 55 percent are fully vaccinated. In Albemarle County, nearly 69 percent have received at least one dose, and about 63 percent are fully vaccinated. And across the entire health district, nearly 62 percent of residents have received at least one dose, and about 56 percent are fully vaccinated.

Last month, the Centers for Disease Control recommended that people living in areas with substantial or high transmission of the virus wear masks indoors, regardless of vaccination status. The BRHD

After an afternoon walking along the Rivanna Trail, there’s nothing better than Chandler’s generous smalls and immoderate larges to make you appreciate good ol’ chocolate and vanilla—or, if you’ve worked up a real appetite, try a massive sundae, dripping with chocolate sauce. The Chandler’s stand is located slightly out of the way in the parking lot of Tractor Supply on Long Street, but its worth the detour.

Delicious ice cream with colorful sprinkles streaming down the side is a perfect exclamation point for blissful summer days. Just remember to bring cash—and get a cup to catch the drips off your frozen spire!

Like so much of what happened in 2020, it came as a shock when Splendora’s Gelato closed its Downtown Mall shop. The closure wasn’t a direct result of COVID—it had been in the plans for a while. But buying a cup of owner PK Ross’ inspired offerings (lookin’ at you, miso cherry!) was an essential part of the downtown experience. If Splendora’s was gone, anything could change. Thankfully, the shop reopened at Stonefield. Step inside, and you’re greeted with raspberrycolored walls, trays and trays of gelato, and, of course, that iconic Splendora’s sign with the multicolored circles. Try a scoop of crisp lemon sorbet, smooth strawberry sorbet, or indulgent chocolate gelato. Talk about a happy return.

Timberlake’s Drug Store There’s an undeniable charm to back-of-the-drugstore diners like Timberlake’s. It’s a homey slice of old American culture that has largely disappeared in most parts of the country. But while private drugstores have been replaced by national chains, locals still know the best remaining places to get cheap eats and homespun milkshakes. The shop’s warm atmosphere will make you feel welcome, and the creamy milkshakes will take you back to the good old days, filling in the cracks perfectly after you scarf down one of the drugstore counter’s famous sandwiches.

Leaning over the store-length cooler in La Flor Michoacana is like leaning over the glass counter at a jewelry store. And just wait until you taste them! The Cherry Avenue spot has dairy and non-dairy options, with flavors ranging from tres leches cake to mango/chili.

Widely known for its original red barn store on James Madison Highway, Moo Thru made a creamy foray into town earlier this year, opening a new store inside Dairy Market. The popular shop offers more than a dozen classic and unique flavors, crafted with fresh milk from the Smith family’s Remington, Virginia, Holstein cows. We went with a classic flavor, cookies-n-cream, in a huge waffle cone, of course. The rich and creamy vanilla pairs perfectly with gobs of chocolaty cookie crumbles that are mixed in. And nothing could have complemented the ice cream better than that sweet, crunchy cone!

It’s hard to be grumpy when your hand’s wrapped around a housemade waffle cone topped with a scoop (or two!) of Chaps’ chocolate ice cream. Go ahead and try.

We’ll be over here waiting, carefully licking around our cone to prevent a single drip of velvety goodness from falling on the sidewalk. While chocolate is our long-time go-to at the Downtown Mall mainstay, there isn’t a dull flavor on Chaps’ menu—from birthday cake to black raspberry to pistachio, you’ll find more than two dozen choices to pick from. Owner Tony LaBua, who opened the shop in 1985 and says he has ice cream for breakfast every morning, swears by his daily cup of the Four Cs: chocolate, cherries, and chocolate chip. Pippin Hill is a culinary vineyard in the heart of Virginia’s wine country. There are two types of standard reservations available: Indoor Table or Covered Veranda for table service. There is also the Vintner’s Table which must be booked at least 48-hours in advance.

Upon arrival, please check-in at the host stand and you will be directed to your designated table. All seating areas have the same wine and food menu offerings. Our staff diligently IDs guests for our ABC licensure compliance and for guest safety. If your party has a guest who is under age 21, we require you to have a reservation at a table.

Somewhat surprising, then, is that Russo’s mainstay gig has become a Grateful Dead cover band—a high-energy tribute act that regularly sells out large theaters.

Now 8 years old, Joe Russo’s Almost Dead wasn’t supposed to last for more than a night. Tasked with putting together a oneoff show in Brooklyn back in 2013, Russo enlisted some friends, including Benevento and Ween bassist Dave Dreiwitz, to play an impromptu set of Dead covers.

At the time, Russo was immersed in the band’s extensive catalog, winding down his tenure in the Dead offshoot Furthur with original members Phil Lesh and Bob Weir. But with his own crew, which also includes guitarists Tom Hamilton and Scott Metzger, Russo gives the material an up-tempo edge.

“We’re a bit irreverent,” he says. “It was kind of the way I always wanted to hear that music played, with a little bit of my Jersey metal-head aggression. We love the songs—the lyrics and the melodies—but we look forward to ripping them apart every single night.”

In one scene, Rob literally sticks his thumb into an over-the-top fancy meal and takes the chef to task for being full of himself.

Not much later, the camera lingers over every drip of sauce and potato slice of a meal prepared with a similar degree of pretension.

The setting has changed and the circumstances are different, but one meal is offensive and the other delectable—and we are never told the difference.

Pig R, 92 minutes Violet Crown Cinema Cage deserves praise for his understated performance, but Wolff is the one who does the emotional heavy lifting. While the plot is focused on Rob’s mission to find his pig, every moving shift lies with Amir, who goes from sleazy to sympathetic. All in all, Pig is a strange, heartbreaking, sometimes funny art-house winner that moves us with its message of love and loss.

With a few missteps, Pig is a beautiful example of earnest filmmaking.

ometimes the beauty of a film lies in its simplicity. When character development and atmosphere are allowed to be front and center, the strength of cinema as an art comes into focus. With a few missteps, Pig is a beautiful example of earnest filmmaking.

In short, the film, written and directed by Michael Sarnoski, is about a man looking for his pig. But it’s no ordinary pig that Rob (Nicolas Cage) is searching for. This is a truffle-hunting pig named Apple, who earns Rob his income and sustains him as a gruff loner in the wilderness outside Portland, Oregon.

Rob has occasional visits from truffle buyer and bourgeois annoyance Amir (Alex Wolff), and their relationship is symbiotic but tense. And when a pair of meth addicts steal Apple during a violent late-night ambush, Rob turns to Amir for both a ride to the city, which Rob left 15 years ago, and help finding his beloved pig.

As the film follows Rob and Amir on their amateur sleuthing expedition, a depth and tenderness develops between the pair. Amir’s grating exterior begins to crumble, and while he never entirely pours his soul out to the bearded forager, he becomes more honest with himself.

Rob, on the other hand, does not change.

He doesn’t need to. This is not a story about Rob discovering himself, like it is for Amir.

We learn how Rob, once a legendary chef, became a mushroom-hunting hermit, and what he left behind, but Pig goes off track when we see Rob doing things that do not fall in line with his character or with the world he currently lives in. In one scene, the movie dips into a hyper-violent urban underbelly that feels dishonest for the characters, and it’s hard to swallow.

Pig also has an uneven assessment of fine-dining and chefs’ egos. The culinary focus is no surprise, given that a truffle pig and the truffle trade are at the core of the story, but it does seem to be of two minds when it comes to the state of the celebrity chef.

multi-band Fred the Festival from August 20-22, featuring Dawes, Hiss Golden Messenger, and Dr. Dog. Then Tedeschi Trucks Band will take the Lockn’ stage from August 27-29, leading an event that includes opening sets from The Marcus King Band, Lettuce, and Jon Batiste.

“This is a first step towards turning it into a multi-event venue,” says Lockn’ co-founder Peter Shapiro of the 387-acre site just off Route 29. “We’ve developed this land into a place that can be used for more than one weekend a summer. With COVID, it makes sense to evolve into something a little smaller. The big festival was great for seven years, but now we’d like to have more bands from different genres come and host their own weekends with music and camping.”

Russo and his bandmates will use their weekend to stretch beyond the catalog of the Dead. The group has a total of nine sets scheduled throughout the three days, two of them billed as “JRAD Plays Other Sh*t.”

Russo says there are also plans to collaborate with the other acts on the bill: The Slip and John Medeski and Billy Martin of experimental funk act Medeski Martin & Wood.

“We’re all going to come together and improvise in the woods,” Russo says.

“That’s the crux of all these acts, creating in the moment, and that’s what I’m most excited about.”

after the initial gig Almost Dead—commonly referred to as JRAD by fans—started getting offers to play more shows. The group has since shared stages with Lesh, Weir, and John Mayer, and sold out venues like Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado.

With every member pursuing other musical projects, Russo says JRAD will always be a part-time band, but with three decades worth of songs in the Grateful Dead repertoire, the group can continue playing together, on a limited basis, indefinitely.

“As we kept getting to know the material, we started to really enjoy it, because we realized we could do whatever we want within those walls,” Russo says. “It’s become this joyful thing, because we’re able to interpret a cherished songbook in our way.”

Currently on its first tour since pandemic restrictions eased, JRAD will play a three-night run at Lockn’ Farm in Arrington from Friday through Sunday. The shows are taking place at the same site that hosted the large-scale Lockn’ festival between 2013 and 2019, with acts including Tom Petty, The Allman Brothers Band, Zac Brown, and Phish.

The festival organizers have adjusted their format, using the scenic property to host a series of downsized “mini fests” with onsite camping for three consecutive weekend events in August.

an, and some are a mix. One of the things that’s been a hit is our pulled pork, which I season with Peruvian ingredients. Pulled pork is not something you get in Peru. My favorite empanada is the beef, egg, and olive. That’s the traditional empanada. But there are so many options. On the veggie side, I like the mushroom.

C-VILLE: How did you get into farming?

Julio Quispe: I used to work at Sylvanaqua

Farms in Earlysville. It all started with me farming, and then I started the food truck.

When I was working with Sylvanaqua Farms, we were trying to make local food more accessible to the community. When I started the food truck, I thought another way to do that would be to prepare food using the meat we raised, and try to source local ingredients, as well.

How do you cook with quality ingredients while keeping prices down?

That is the struggle, but empanadas are a great fit. I try to use cuts that are a little bit

We use a lot of ground meats. And it’s the same thing when we make special dishes.

But it’s not easy, and I’m still figuring it out.

It seems like you get some help from your family.

Yeah—so, we all come from Lima in Peru.

And I mostly grew up in New York, so it has always been a learning experience, trying to do a lot of the things we are do-

ing. I never expected to be farming and doing these things with animals. My grandma and grandpa came from the Andes, and they had a background in farming.

They would keep animals in the back space of their house in Lima. So, I did grow up with some of that.

How does your background influence the menu at Pachamama Peru?

How have you been getting through the pandemic?

It has been good, and I can’t really complain. I have been working with Local Food Hub, and that’s been really helping. We’re looking into frozen empanadas, getting them into retail. We’re still figuring out the details. Being able to sell our own meats— ducks and chickens—has been really helpful, and we’re doing a few markets and small catering events.

But empanadas are only the beginning— not only of the menu at Pachamama, but of what Quispe does for the local food community. In addition to operating his food truck, he runs Earlysville-based Pachamama Farm, which recently received a mid-Atlantic Food Resilience & Access Coalition grant to give food to those in need.

(2016) and The Importance of Self Belief (2018), served as vehicles for processing, healing, and exploring both Dixon’s personal experience and the collective Black experience in this country. Following the tragic killing of his best friend in 2018, Dixon breaks down trauma on For My Mama and Anyone Who Look Like Her through the lens of religion and mortality with tracks like “Chain Sooo Heavy” and “Bless

the Child.” As a storyteller, Dixon uses the imagery and techniques of gothic literature. He’s a self-described “musical time traveler,” relying on genres from hip-hop to jazz to analyze the past and enact change in the present. At times dark and brooding; at times rejuvenating and cleansing, the album is an homage to Dixon’s community and a must-listen for all. (Released May 7)

Disco Risqué D3P Self-release Since dropping its debut album in 2015, Charlottesville funkpunk outfit Disco Risqué has carved out an audience with its frenetic grooves and energetic live shows. Composed of Charlie Murchie (lead guitar), Robert “Slim” Prescott (drums/vocals), Ryan “Swimsuit” Calonder (vocals/

trumpet/rhythm guitar), and Andrew “The Champ” Hollifield (bass), the group added Sean Hodge on keys and vocals last fall, resulting in a more robust, heavy sound. Now, the crew is back with D3P, a three-track EP to push into this new era.

Recorded in Charlottesville and mixed in Richmond, D3P is a breath of fresh air after nearly two years of a global pandemic. Perky tracks like “Pre Fluff Party Fyfe” and “The Scene”

complete a welcome, danceable listen from a band that doesn’t take itself too seriously. (Released May 28)

Sleepwalkers “Until the Night is Gone” Shoebox Treasure Richmond staple Sleepwalkers’ new single is a retro-futuristic romp through the wee hours of the night. The group’s last full-length release, Ages, came

in 2019 via Spacebomb Records, and harkened back to the pop landscape of the late ’70s and early ’80s. As a follow-up, “Until the Night is Gone” continues this trajectory with an unforgettable pop hook, tinges of disco, and cinematic touches, making it one of the top songs of the summer.

PHAST-TSC Trial Not Enrolling

Brain Research Study

Due to logistical concerns associated with COVID-19, the PHAST-TSC clinical trial was terminated and is no longer enrolling participants. This study, sponsored by Diffusion Pharmaceuticals Inc., was testing whether an experimental drug, trans-sodium crocetinate (TSC), was safe and helped people having a stroke. The study planned to enroll 160 people with stroke as they were taken by ambulance to UVA Medical Center, Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital or Augusta Health

Healthy adults between the ages of 18-65 with no current or past serious medical or psychiatric conditions are needed to create a Brain Library. Participants will be asked to complete interviews, cognitive assessment, a blood draw and a brain MRI. Study procedures will be completed over 1-2 visits and will last a total of 5 hours. Compensation is up to $200 for completing the study. Principal Investigator: James Stone, MD, PHD.

Newbie, traditionalist or hipster, deeppocketed retiree or shoestring connoisseur, the Staunton Music Festival has 10 exciting days for you this month, August 13 through August 22.

More than 80 of the world’s most acclaimed chamber musicians put the festival on their calendars each year for the camaraderie, the diverse programming, the charming setting, and the devoted and appreciative audience. Most concerts are held in the beautiful Trinity Episcopal Church or the spare and striking Blackfriars Theater, and the five noontime performances are free (advance registration is required).

So where might a young couple go looking for a starter home in such a desirable spot? “There are a lot of neighborhoods that are conducive to that,” Carpenter says. Green Spring Valley, she notes, offers a mix of older and newer homes. Prices for the older ones, mostly ranch homes with basements, where the main floor footage is anywhere from 1,200 to 1,500 square feet, begin at about $189,000, Townsend says. Newer homes in the same neighborhoods start in the $350 thousands and have two-stories.

One-level, three-bedroom, and twobath homes are on the market throughout the city, Townsend notes, “maybe on an acre, maybe on two. In the neighborhoods there are one and two-story homes in clusters.” Prices start in the low $200 thousands. Fixer-upper hobbyists and fans of older homes might find a two- or three-story beauty from the 1930s or 40s.

In other cases, “investors have purchased these homes and beautifully renovated.”

The museum’s Saturday evening summer concert series, American Roots Music, will feature Wound Tight Bluegrass on August 15. Troy Breslow will play country and western and original tunes on Sunday, August 22, and Southern Hospitality will bring the blues on Sunday, August 29.

Gypsy Hill Park Lovers of the great outdoors will also enjoy Staunton’s Gypsy Hill Park, once the subject of an oil painting by celebrated folk artist Grandma Moses, who lived nearby in the 1890s. The 214-acres park is a sportsman’s paradise, with a football field, baseball fields, basketball courts, running tracks, soccer fields, tennis, skate park, golf course, pool, playgrounds, volleyball, horseshoe courts, and a gymnasium. A 1.3-mile circular roadway called Constitution Drive runs through the middle and attracts walkers, joggers, cyclists and rollerbladers, and a 2.5 acre storm water retention pond stocked with trout hosts two big annual fishing derbies. (Boating is not permitted). Other amenities include picnic shelters with tables and grills, a garden center, a duck pond, and a dog park.

May through October, kids and their grownups enjoy riding the Gypsy Express mini train. On summer evenings, people gather around an old-fashioned bandstand for entertainment, including the Stonewall Brigade Band, the oldest continuous community band in the country, dating to 1855. The park remains open, with users required to observe stringent physical distancing guidelines.

The Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library and Museum America’s 28th president, Woodrow Wilson, was born in a Greek Revival manse in the Gospel Hill neighborhood of Staunton in 1856. Today the home houses his Presidential Library and Museum, where visitors can take self-guided tours through seven galleries devoted to

his presidency and his early years, as well as to period issues and events including suffrage, prohibition and World War I. Exhibitions include the President’s restored 1919 Pierce-Arrow limousine, World War I weapons and uniforms, and a state-of-the-art display re-creating life in the trenches where so much of the war was endured. Children can enjoy scavenger hunts and hands-on activities in the Kids’ Corner.

The research library is open by appointment. The Victorian-style terraced gardens behind the Manse were designed

by Charles Gillette and planted in the early 1930s by The Garden Club of Virginia.

Architectural Gems While you’re downtown, or just passing through neighborhoods with redolent names like Gospel Hill, Beulah Park, Linden Heights, and P.H. Trout, be sure to look closely. Staunton has no less than five historic districts, and a wealth of distinguished architecture in styles including Federal, Greek Revival, Italianate, Folk Victorian, Queen Anne and Colonial Revival. Many of the city’s noteworthy structures can be attributed to one man, T.J. Collins, a talented architect who practiced in Staunton from 1891 to 1911, designing nearly 200 buildings, many still standing today.

Sip or Dine Italian, Caribbean, Vietnamese, Mexican, and contemporary American are just some of the restaurant options downtown. Whatever you choose, finish off with a scoop or two at The Split Banana, or drive just a couple of minutes for 50s style drive-in fare at Wright’s Dairy Rite, or dinner and dessert at Kline’s Dairy Bar & Hog Wild BBQ. At Queen City Brewing they’ve been “making beer, talking about beer, and yes—most importantly—drinking beer” for over 15 years. Today Queen City has more than 30 brews on tap. Friday “Picks n’ Pints” nights feature bands and singersongwriters, Thursday is Trivia Night, and watch the schedule for Open Mic evenings.

True to Queen City tradition, patrons can become brewers themselves through the “6-3-1 Brewer’s Apprentice” program.

“Worry Less, Live More” is the motto at Skipping Rock Beer Co., and it’s hard to worry when you’re sipping an Irish Red with notes of cherry, almond, or a sour, fruity Blackberry Gorse. Twenty-four lagers, IPAs, ales, stouts, and whatever else the brew team can dream up are on tap. Friday and Saturday evenings they’re accompanied by live music. Singer songwriter Valerie McQueen Crummett, Sera Petras of the Findells, and October Thomas bring their rich harmonies to original songs on Friday, October 20 from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m.

Yelping Dog Wine store doubles as a bar offering wine by the bottle or glass, gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches, cheese, and cheese plates. In addition to the wines it makes from its own Shenandoah Valley vineyard, Ox-Eye Vineyards Tasting Room holds art openings every other month and is available for private events.

But the cool arts and culinary scenes and the architectural treasures hardly exhaust the appeal of a city set in the Shenandoah Valley. “Mainly when my clients want to move to Staunton, it’s all about the mountain views and having quick access to the interstate to be able to maneuver whichever way they want,” says Kristel Townsend of eXp Realty LLC, whose own family loves a Sunday afternoon mountain drive. All kinds of folks are settling in Staunton nowadays. “People of all ages are coming in,” Carpenter says. “I’ve had clients from California, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, and Florida. Some are retiring and some have families; because of the pandemic they’ve learned that they can work from anywhere.”

One of Carpenter’s recent clients was a former marine who re-enlisted to become an officer, and is taking training at Mary Baldwin College, a small, formerly women’s and now co-educational school offering degree programs from bachelor to doctoral.

Townsend cites a young couple from the Midwest: one recently found a job in in Waynesboro, the other in Harrisonburg. They chose Staunton as a convenient midpoint. “They were looking for a specific type of home,” she remembers.

“They were OK with a smaller lot.” What they found was a standard house with about 1,200-1,300 square feet and a garage, all on one level, on less than an acre.

“It worked perfectly or them.”

So come to Staunton for “culcha,” come for convenience, come for beauty both natural and manmade—whatever your reason, you’ll soon love it like the locals. “It’s quaint,” says Carpenter, the 46-year native. “And it’s home.”
