After Paris Saint-Germain’s 1-0 loss to Bayern Munich in the Champions League final last month, Paris midfielder Ander Herrera gave an unusually candid postgame interview. Playing in empty arenas “is shit,” Herrera said. “Football without fans is nothing, that’s my opinion.”

Herrera was talking about a different kind of football than we’re writing about this week (p. 10), but the point stands. Sports are unique in their capacity to spark collective emotion: collective joy, collective heartbreak, collective everything in between. NEWS Officer arrested Charlottesville police officer Jeffrey Jaeger was charged with misdemeanor assault and battery last week. The charges stem from a March 3 incident in which three officers, including Jaeger, who is white, arrested an unnamed Black defendant for being drunk in public. After showing body camera footage during the trial, the defendant was found not guilty. It’s the latest incident in a disturbing pattern for the Charlottesville police: In a separate episode in July, a CPD officer was caught on film violently arresting a homeless man on the Downtown Mall.

COVID cases continue to rise at UVA. The school reported 227 total positive cases as of September 6, as well as six new hospitalizations this weekend. Thomas Jefferson Health District has reported 198 new cases in the last week. The New York Times reports that cases have spiked in 100 college towns since students returned, especially in the Midwest and South.

t’s been over a decade since the University of Virginia has seen a serious attempt at unionization.

The Staff Union at UVA dissolved in 2008 after failing to keep its membership count high enough, and a 2011 union effort fizzled before it could get off the ground. Now, as the coronavirus pandemic has worsened working conditions and brought workplace safety to the foreground, university employees are giving unionizing another shot.

The United Campus Workers of Virginia’s founding was spurred by concern about UVA’s opening Grounds to students, and the sudden layoffs of Aramark contract workers in April.

“We recognize that decisions that have been made can harm workers,” says Evan Brown, a fourth-year biology graduate student and organizer of the union. “If UVA is such an upstanding member of our community, and if it loves its employees, then it should stand by its workers even when things are tough.”

Crystal Luo had been thinking about unionizing ever since she enrolled in her history graduate program at UVA and began working as a teaching assistant.

“As much as the university likes to say that grad students are students first,” Luo says, “in so many cases we are workers for the university.”

At first, Luo and her cohort didn’t think a union was possible in Virginia. In 2019, Oxfam America ranked Virginia as the worst state for workers’ rights in the entire country. Virginia is one of 27 right-to-work states, a law that weakens unions by banning them from compelling employees to participate in the union. And though unions are legal here, Virginia is one of just three states— along with North Carolina and South Carolina—in which collective bargaining in the public sector is prohibited, meaning unions cannot participate in strikes or negotiate employee contracts with public university representatives.

visited the university to try to gin up support for unionization. The meeting drew around 40 employees; representatives explained that unions were not illegal in Virginia and that, in fact, unionizing was protected under federal law, even though UVA is not legally allowed to recognize or negotiate with the union.

The representatives sparked an interest in unionizing that had not been effectively solidified since SUUVA’s 2008 termination.

It didn’t hurt that the representatives came in early March, a week before COVID-19 forced the university to close. The representatives planted a seed for unionization that continued on during the spring.

“People were impressed with the resources that UCW had, and their level of support,” Brown says. “It was like, they

have the experience, they have everything we need. Let’s get going.”

“The pandemic lit a fire under a lot of people,” Luo says. “Everyone was being asked to do so much more than they usually would, with no concurrent increase in pay or anything like that.”

UCW has a strong track record of unionizing southern universities, specifically in right-to-work states, and winning higher wages and better working conditions for members. The organization is affiliated with the Communication Workers of America, one of the largest labor unions in the U.S. UCW, unlike many university unions, is a wall-to-wall union, meaning any employee of the university can join. That’s a key difference from UVA unions of the past, which CONTINUED ON PAGE 11

What a difference a year—and a pandemic—make: UVA football fans have gone from giddy over the team's 2019 defeat of Virginia Tech, to gloomy about an uncertain, crowdless 2020 season.

he ball had barely slipped out of Virginia Tech wide receiver Damon Hazelton’s hands when the first University of Virginia students’ feet hit the turf.

The incomplete pass meant UVA had beaten its fiercest rival for the first time in 15 years.

Nothing, not fences or Scott Stadium employees, could keep the hillside student crowd from spilling onto the field, where players were whipping off their helmets to shout their triumph to the sky.

Like most memories, the field rush looks different in the light of the pandemic. The celebration that felt so natural and effortless last Thanksgiving—bare hands on sweaty shoulders, singing “The Good Old Song” linked arm-in-arm—now feels a world away.

Today, as the Cavaliers prepare for their September 19 rematch against Tech, Scott Stadium stands empty. And when football players take the field, their calls will echo in

a mostly vacant stadium: In order to adhere to Virginia crowd safety regulations, stadium crowds will be limited to 1,000 people— team family members only—in an arena with a regular capacity of 61,500.

Despite the enormous amount of money UVA athletics generate, the school’s most profitable sports—football and men’s basketball—operate on surprisingly thin profit margins. According to The Daily Progress, in the 2017-18 financial year, the university athletics program had a deficit of about $340,000, despite generating over $100 million in revenue.

Even football, the most profitable sport, brought in only about $6.5 million after costs in the fall of 2018, according to a financial report filed with the NCAA. In 201819, UVA spent $25.9 million on its football program and brought in $32.4 million total.

Almost $6 million came from ticket sales.

That means that without a crowd at Scott Stadium, the university’s biggest moneymaker could become another red line in its athletics budget.

But the loss of a football crowd will reverberate much further than Grounds.

“Football weekends are huge here in the Charlottesville area,” says Brantley Ussery, director of marketing and public relations at the Charlottesville Albemarle Convention & Visitors Bureau. “Hotels are going to feel it in terms of their occupancy rates. Typically we’re sold out on home football weekends. And the impact goes beyond the hotels and also goes to the wineries, the restaurants, and all the other tourism-related businesses that benefit from all those additional fans that come on the weekends.”

Charlottesville and Albemarle draw millions of visitors to central Virginia every fall.

In 2018, the city and county took in a combined $21.9 million in tourism-related taxes, not to mention a whopping $654.4 million in tourism dollars that cycled into the local economy, reports The Daily Progress.

Visitors come for the wine and the views, but also for the football. UVA home games attracted an average of almost 48,000 people per game in 2019. In a normal year, that

would mean thousands of out-of-town visitors heading downtown on six of Charlottesville’s busiest Saturdays of the year.

This, however, is no normal year. Food and occupancy tax revenues bottomed out in April and have climbed steadily since then, but June 2020 tax revenue was still down almost 50 percent compared to June 2019, reports the Free Enterprise Forum. The $2 million in lost tourism taxes stung for a city already operating on a pandemic-reduced budget.

Charlottesville, so dependent on tourism, has no choice but to remain hopeful. “We have seen slow and steady increases over the last couple of months,” Ussery says. “Each month looks a little bit better than the month before…we just hope that continues as we go into the fall season.”

The team finalized its schedule on Friday, announcing a slate of 11 games. Ten of those will be played within the ACC. Despite the schedule confirmation, there’s no guarantee the season will proceed as planned. Two of the NCAA’s Power 5 conferences have already called off their seasons.

Across the country, COVID-19 outbreaks on campuses have pushed administrations to move classes online or send students home.

Other ACC rivals like the University of North Carolina and North Carolina State are proceeding with football even though classes are all virtual.

At UVA, which is holding some in-person classes, the football team has been living and practicing in a “bubble,” limiting contact with the outside world as much as possible. After practicing in full face shields, players return to an isolated residence hall.

They also receive regular COVID tests, none of which have returned positive for the virus since July 24.

“Our players are getting ready to move off Grounds, and the students are coming, and some of our classes will be in person,” Mendenhall told the Richmond TimesDispatch in late August. “And so, by that very design, the bubble is broken.”

Each year, as the leaves start to turn, Mincer’s lines the sidewalk outside its Corner storefront with racks of orange and blue sportswear. It’s no coincidence that six of Mincer’s 10 busiest weekends correspond with the six UVA home games every season.

“Since Scott Stadium is within walking distance, people are always just around the Corner all day,” says Cal Mincer, the shop’s vice president. “It’s a big spike for us.”

It’s a similar story for The Draftsman Hotel. Along with graduation weekend, home football games are when the hotel is most likely to sell out—especially if the visiting team is within driving distance, like Virginia Tech or UNC. “The fall also has parents’ weekend, so it’s a pretty predominant peak season for us,” says Walter Burton, manager of The Draftsman. “You’ve got fall weddings, you’ve got parents’ weekend, you’ve got football games.

Just those three dynamics, it helps boom the economy here in Charlottesville.”

This year, Corner businesses aren’t sure what to expect. Fans won’t be heading to Scott Stadium, but perhaps they’ll find their way to town on football Saturdays nonetheless.

“I would like to think, just because of Charlottesville and the attraction and people’s support of the football team and sports teams at UVA, we will probably still get some folks that are just going to come to the area, just to be a part of the atmosphere and the culture of UVA and Charlottesville,” Burton says.

“I don’t know if [limited ticket sales] will cause a big spike in people hanging out on the Corner, and then that’ll be good, because they’ll be at Boylan or something watching the game,” says Mincer. “Or if that’ll just kill all the traffic for the Saturdays.”

For now, Mincer’s attitude is the same as The Draftsman’s, and the tourism bureau’s, and the athletics department’s, and the entire city of Charlottesville’s: There’s nothing to do but wait, see, and hope for the best.

“We don’t really know what to expect,” Mincer says. “And even if we did, there’s not a lot we can do to prepare for anything. We’ll be open, and we hope people come.”

After meeting with the UCW reps, Brown and the ad-hoc executive committee quickly began compiling a list of goals, chiefly that the university switch to fully online classes. Now that students are back, the union is advocating that they return home as soon as possible.

“If we can get the university to make the right call even a day earlier than they would have without community pressure, then that’s one day less of students being in Charlottesville,” Luo says.

Other chief concerns surround the treatment of graduate students and their duties, namely because a majority of the union’s current members are graduate students. Some of their graduate-centered demands include more transparent compensation and a graduate worker representative similar to human resources, which graduate students don’t have access to.

Since transitioning to online classes, some graduate students in the union have seen their workloads double while their compensation remains the same, says Luo. “Those of us who have been working as TAs have often been asked to shoulder the grunt work of moving classes online,” Luo says.

Luo believes that past unions failed because they took a narrow approach to workplace justice. In order to attract the large, diverse coalition needed to make headway, she says the union will have to emphasize social justice in its rhetoric. “You really can’t win things like wage increases or economic rights without taking into consideration issues of racial justice,” Luo says. “There definitely needs to be a kind of intersectional broad approach [to unionizing.]”

In addition to graduate students, the union hopes to incorporate UVA staff.

Luo is particularly interested in having health system representation in the union, citing layoffs, staff shortages, and safety concerns at the hospital.

But the goals of the organization go beyond working conditions at the university. UCWVA also wants to partner with area justice organizations like Black Lives Matter Charlottesville, the local chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America, and Defund Cville Police, so that the union can best provide support to the community outside the school’s walls. In theory, a UVA worker’s union with a strong relationship to the city at large could step in and threaten collective action when the school’s decisions endanger those unaffiliated with the university.

“I think that it’s really time for those of us who kind of live in the bubble of UVA to use this as an opportunity to reach out and engage in a more kind of like democratic and inclusive and community minded form of belonging and organizing here,” Luo says.

“Any time you get a large group of people together, people who make the university run, who are central to the university’s functioning...and we figure out how to use it in constructive ways, then we can make change happen.”

The Harrison is now being grown around the country and featured as a varietal by several craft cideries. Albemarle CiderWorks, for one, is growing around 150 Harrison trees and makes a single-varietal Harrison cider. According to Chuck Shelton, Charlotte’s brother and the CiderWorks’ cider maker, the Harrison is important not only for its place in history, but because it still makes great cider today.

“My opinion is it’s probably the best cider apple that’s ever been grown in the U.S.,” he

Prohibition in 1920 was the last nail in the coffin for many of the American apple varieties, and the Harrison—being suited only for cider, not for eating—was among many that were largely forgotten.

nce upon a time, the apple was king in America. There were thousands of specialized varieties, home orchards were widespread, and cider was the most commonly available beverage. These days, we’re used to a very different reality: Most Americans are familiar only with a handful of commercial apple varieties, bred for shelf life and looks instead of flavor, and cider is more of a niche product than a staple. But local cider makers are reconnecting to that lost era of the apple, and the Harrison—which came within a hair’s breadth of being lost to history—is a key link.

“Anyone interested in fine cider and heritage apples is interested in the Harrison,” says Charlotte Shelton of Albemarle CiderWorks, the orchard and cidery located in North Garden. It’s an apple that earned praises from connoisseurs as early as 1817, when William Coxe, author of an illustrated guide to American apple varieties, called it “the most celebrated of the cider apples of Newark in New Jersey.”

Newark was part of an important apple industry serving the New York and Philadelphia markets, and Coxe went on to note that the Harrison “commanded a high price in New York.” Buyers in those days would have been attuned to the Harrison’s special qualities: “the taste pleasant and sprightly, but rather dry—it produces a high coloured, rich, and sweet cider of great strength.”

Within the century that followed Coxe’s guide, though, the temperance movement and changing American demographics put a damper on what had been a robust apple and cider culture. Prohibition in 1920 was the last nail in the coffin for many of the American apple varieties, and the Harrison—being suited only for cider, not for eating—was among many that were largely forgotten.

Many varieties will never be recovered, a fate nearly suffered by the Harrison. But in 1976, a collector from Vermont went searching for it in the Newark area and, by a stroke of luck, discovered a Harrison apple tree that was less than a week from being cut down by the owner of the backyard where it grew.

Before it fell, the collector took scions (cuttings). Some of these eventually made their way into the hands of Tom Burford—a celebrated central Virginia apple grower, pomologist, and nurseryman who spent decades spreading the gospel of heirloom apples through his books and public appearances. Burford also helped and advised Charlotte Shelton and her siblings from the time they established their business in the 1990s until his death in March.

“One of the things we’re interested in doing is exploring what American apples can produce in terms of cider. The Harrison

says, praising the Harrison’s practical advantages: “It’s a great producer. It’s dense and hard, and stores fairly well so you don’t have to press it right away. A high-sugar apple tends to make a high amount of alcohol from fermenting. That helps preserve the cider.”

All that is a boon to the orchardist, of course, but what about the taste? There too, Shelton says the Harrison earns its keep through a balance of several characteristics.

“It’s high in tannins, which give you a slight bitterness and full-bodied mouthfeel,” says Shelton. “It’s very acidic, so it has a very sour taste to go along with the astringency. All these things together make it one of the best.” As for Burford, he may have gone even further when he told Edible Jersey magazine that he was so bowled over by his first taste of the Harrison that he had to sit down.

Come early October or so, the Shelton family will be harvesting this year’s crop of Harrisons: smallish, yellow-skinned, black-spotted apples destined to be pressed, fermented, and eventually poured from tall bottles into waiting glasses. Chuck Shelton says the Harrison is finding its way into more orchards in Virginia and beyond, and that its popularity is a boon to the growing American cider business. “We’re fortunate,” he says, “that it didn’t go completely extinct.”

The Harrison, considered by many to be the best cider apple grown in the United States, is making a big comeback.

t’s not an exaggeration to say the graphic tee revolutionized the fashion world. Its unique pairing of text and image allowed for an unprecedented level of self-expression, and gave birth to a slew of immediately recognizable designs—from I ♥ NY to Frankie Says Relax to D.A.R.E. (the latter being as ironic as it is iconic).

Kate Snyder, founder of Charlottesvillebased T-shirt company Bottom Drawer, just might have put together our town’s next iconic logo. The Townie tee, “the very FIRST perfect T-shirt in a line of completely perfect T-shirts” (or so claims Bottom Drawer’s Instagram page) was unveiled in early August, and it’s exactly what it sounds like. TOWNIE is displayed in all caps, block letters—in your choice of black text (“PLAIN BAGEL”) or rainbow (“EVERYTHING BAGEL”)— across a white background.

Snyder says her lifelong townie status— she was born and raised in Charlottesville—combined with a love of fashion, specifically graphic tees, inspired her to make this Bottom Drawer’s debut design.

Although Snyder has dabbled in T-shirt design before, creating and selling POACH tees (an edgy parody of COACH) a few years ago, she hadn’t planned to start an entire Charlottesville-based business. In fact, she hadn’t intended to remain in Charlottesville at all—a 2020 UVA graduate, her postgrad sights were set on New York. However, Snyder’s professional prospects were cut short by the pandemic. Like so many others, she found herself in “this weird townie space, living in my childhood bedroom.”

Hence the Townie tee. “This was my banana bread or my sourdough starter,” Sny-

der says. “I wanted to test out that creative side.” Her creative side, as it turns out, comes with a very unique sense of humor.

Bottom Drawer’s Instagram features an interview of dubious authenticity with Karl Lagerfeld about breakfast and fashion, among other elements.

Under all the irreverence, though, is a real commitment to her community. Three dollars from each Townie sale goes to The Haven, an idea that Snyder says was brought on in part by the pandemic. “Obviously, the circumstances of people suffering from homelessness in Charlottesville has been exacerbated…it seemed like a no-brainer.”

This charity pairs well with Snyder’s newest initiative: including a pre-stamped postcard in each Bottom Drawer package so that her customers can write a letter to someone and support the United States Postal Service.

Snyder has released three designs since Townie, each one punnier than the last.

“Hautemeal,” the most recent, features an anthropomorphized and decidedly elegant bowl of oats. It is, as she is happy to admit, “openly ridiculous”—but then, she says, so is the idea of fashion itself. “Why not, when you’re getting dressed, make the thing that you’re getting dressed in as ridiculous as possible?”

Snyder, who still plans on moving to New York sometime soon, isn’t sure how much longer Bottom Drawer will continue to put out new products, but she says the venture has made her realize designing shirts is “something that I would like to do forever.” If wearing fashion is a form of self-expression, then Snyder has found that creating it is a form of self-discovery. “I’m trying to find my own language through my work for Bottom Drawer.”

Lyrical departure Local academics get creative in psychedelic-emo outfit Mouzon Bigsby

A

Charlottesville trio with literary inclinations has released a catchy new LP. But none of the three band members are sons of Bill Wilson.

Mouzon Bigsby, which dropped its debut full-length album, Kino, on August 24, formed after a 2015 Christmas party when UVA English professor John Parker met JMU English professor Brooks Hefner over cocktails. Parker had been playing acoustic guitar almost exclusively solo for 20 years and wanted to plug back in. When he mentioned he was looking to form a band, Hefner said he’d come to the right place— he played bass.

“I told him after the first time we played... his chops were through the roof,” Parker says of Hefner.

The pair of profs commenced collaborating in Parker’s garage, tinkering with a lo-fi, alt-country sound highlighted by Hefner on lap steel. The duo went into the studio in 2017, and released a sparsely produced five-track

The three-piece played six or seven shows around Charlottesville to whip up support.

The concerts were well received, and the musicians thought they’d put together an

LP in short order. They had completed several recordings in the studio session that leaned in a garage-rock, post-punk direction, and the tracks promised to lend themselves to full production.

But life served up some complicated riffs.

Parker and his wife had twins. Wootten had other band commitments and a baby of his own. “We got upended,” Parker says.

By 2020, Parker had finally recorded the additional lead vocals and guitars needed to round out the record, and Mouzon Bigsby was ready to release the seven tracks that would become Kino. Life riffed again. The COVID-19 pandemic slowed the mixing process and the musicians won’t be able to gig to support it in the way they anticipated—at least in the short term.

The full-length LP, recorded and mixed at Virginia Arts by Chris Doermann and Sean Dart and available on Bandcamp.com, may very well stand for itself. Parker’s melodic, soft-spoken vocals contrast with his scratchy guitar riffs, and blend seamlessly with Hefner’s Motown-influenced basslines. Anchored by the funky final track “Elon Musk,” Kino offers a sound ranging in influences from The Cars to Joy Division, Dinosaur Jr. to Curtis Mayfield.

New projects break through the noise A. D. Carson i used to love to dream (University of Michigan Press) A.D. Carson has made a career out of breaking boundaries. As a Ph.D. student at Clemson University, his dissertation was an album called Owning My Masters: The Rhetorics Of Rhymes & Revolutions. Across the project’s 34 tracks, he examined identity politics, and even challenged the university to look inward on “See the Stripes,” which points to John C. Calhoun, a slave-owning 19th-century statesman whose house is memorialized on campus.

After garnering thousands of viewers and listeners on platforms like YouTube and SoundCloud, Carson was offered the position of assistant professor of hip-hop and the global South in the McIntire Department of Music at the University of Virginia.

He continued his work with the “mixtap/e/ssays” series sleepwalking, turning the spotlight on his new home of Charlottesville by tackling themes like the proliferation of white supremacy in the

wake of the Unite the Right rally that ravaged the community in 2017. i used to love to dream is the third installment of the series, and it marks another milestone for Carson: It’s the first peer-reviewed rap album ever published by an academic press. Tracing his roots back to his hometown of Decatur, Illinois, Carson harnesses feelings of leaving home and what constitutes the idea of success or “making it.” Elsewhere on the collection, he tackles systemic racism, police brutality, and the impact of discrimination by the criminal justice system. i used to love to dream is a multifaceted, cross-genre display of how art and activism go hand in hand—and is a must listen (released on August 6).

Kate Bollinger A word becomes a sound (Self-released) After generating a lot of buzz with her 2019 EP I Don’t Wanna Lose, Charlottesville native Kate Bollinger returns with another batch of languid dream-pop compositions. A word becomes a sound finds the songwriter, who recently graduated

from the University of Virginia with a degree in cinematography, expanding her sonic palette. Across the EP’s five tracks, she incorporates electronic elements and a new level of production, all while maintaining the hazy lo-fi quality that has become her signature.

Bollinger once again teamed up with classmate and frequent collaborator John Trainum to achieve this balance. The result is a lush, laid-back offering of R&B, jazz, and indie shoegaze. Bollinger and Trainum finished writing and production for newer tracks like “Queen to Nobody” during the pandemic. But the opener, “A Couple Things,” has been a staple of Bollinger’s live sets for years. “If I mess up a couple things or if I

mess up a lot of things,” she muses on the song. “If I fuck up a couple things, well, what if I fuck up everything?” It’s Bollinger’s ability to channel sentiments that are simultaneously personal and universal that makes A word becomes a sound her strongest work to date (released on August 21).

Various Artists A Little Bit at a Time: Spacebomb Family Rarities (Spacebomb Records) Richmond’s Spacebomb Records is more than just a record label; it’s a musical nexus. Operating in a newly renovated studio,

Spacebomb also serves as a publishing, management, and production company. Spacebomb sought to showcase its many facets with a new compilation, A Little Bit at a Time: Spacebomb Family Rarities. Digging into the archives, the album highlights Richmond-based artists like Andy Jenkins, Sleepwalkers, and Spacebomb founder Matthew E. White, alongside artists like Pure Bathing Culture and Laura Veirs, who have worked with Spacebomb in various capacities.

Featuring B-sides, previously unreleased tracks, and demos, A Little Bit at a Time is the perfect deep dive from one of the biggest drivers of Central Virginia’s creative community (released on July 3).

Ninian Doff’s chaotic comedy Get Duked! is an exhilarating romp through the Scottish Highlands that leaves viewers wondering what the fledgling director will do next.

a good decision, but Boyz in the Wood says a lot about its intentions.

Many films like this fail in treating the depth of their characters as secondary to the loudness of their antics, and it’s in getting this right that Doff truly sets himself apart as a writer-director. He knows that we’re used to thinly sketched characters being reaction machines, screaming at scary things, laughing at funny things, while the selfish one says selfish stuff, the stupid one says stupid stuff, etc. In Get Duked!, not only do all four boys see real growth throughout the film, but even the most insane action is convincing. Doff is fully invested in the characters as people, and for a minute you may find yourself genuinely anxious about their fate. They are not simply the vehicle by which an opinionated artist conveys a snarky opinion, or a skilled technician

Get Duked! is a wickedly clever commentary on class and the state of Britain in a deceptively funny package, anchored by stylistic boldness and propelled by memorable performances and shockingly blunt anti-aristocratic commentary for a country that still has a monarch. Some have found Doff ’s lengthy flights of fancy to be frustrating. I find them invigorating, like he knew he was breaking the rules, but believed in the material too much to care.

bout halfway through Get Duked!, there comes a moment when you realize this silly little comedy about a group of city-dwelling teenagers in the Scottish Highlands became a bold experiment in instinctive filmmaking. Right when it seems like things are about to fly off the rails, it’s clear that it was slowly evolving into a lawless social satire the whole time.

The film hasn’t betrayed our trust by breaking its own rules, as many madcap comedies often do. It rewards our investment by proving it never needed rules in the first place.

This is British music video director Ninian Doff ’s feature debut, produced from his own screenplay. Doff has a lot to say in Get Duked!, managing to fit more into 87 minutes than many filmmakers do in movies twice as long.

It’s so dense that Doff needed at least four endings, Lord of the Rings style—narrative, political, emotional, and tonal—and each one of them is earned. With a film that covers so much terrain, it’s hard to imagine how he could possibly follow it up, but Get Duked! leaves little doubt that this is an artist with no shortage of fresh ideas.

The story concerns a series of disasters that befall participants in the Duke of Edinburgh Award, a fictionalized version of a real program. Three delinquents—Dean (Rian Gordon), Duncan (Lewis Gribben), and DJ Beatroot (Viraj Juneja)—are sent to the Scottish Highlands on a hiking trip as penance for blowing up a public restroom. They’re joined by Ian (Samuel Bottomley), a naive, homeschooled boy who volunteers for the

program to make new friends. As they make their way to camp, they’re pursued by a possible serial killer disguised as the Duke of Edinburgh (Eddie Izzard). The local police, already ill-equipped to deal with the case of a bread thief, misconstrue events until their suspect description is little more than a string of scary adjectives, all while never actually accomplishing anything.

Get Duked! made the rounds at last year’s festival under the name Boyz in the Wood.

The new, less jokey title is better suited to the final film, but the original captures its spirit and its place in the history of British satire, with the likes of the sitcom “Spaced”—created by and starring Simon Pegg and Jessica Stevenson, directed by Edgar Wright, and co-starring Nick Frost— about 20-something Londoners mired in American pop culture, and the juxtaposition of their mundane lives with their Hollywood obsessions. (It propelled the team to films like Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, which are built on similar sensibilities.)

Setting Get Duked! in the Scottish Highlands taps into some of the same absurdity that makes “Spaced” so much fun. Nothing is supposed to happen here, yet it becomes the scene for drug-fueled underground raves with Scottish farmers, bored officers too eager to assume the role of supercops, bored hunters who pretend to be murderous aristocrats to act out a generational grudge, and commentary on how trying to help “troubled” youth has no basis in what they actually need. Along the way, the filmmaking joyously borrows from a number of genres, including action, horror, musical, even zombie. Changing the name to Get Duked! was

“When you decide what you are going to do for a living and pay the bills, you’re lucky if you can do something you love, but you are instrumentalizing what you love,” Parker says. “If we wanted to try to pay the bills, that would put a lot of pressure on us, and I think it would potentially hurt the music.”

At any rate, Parker and Hefner aren’t sure what to expect when the world emerges from its COVID-induced slumber and again celebrates live sounds. “I’m just hoping the venues are there. You hope they can hold out until it’s safe,” Hefner says.

The duo—sans Wooten—has been recording material for another album remotely, going back to their alt-country roots with Hefner now on pedal steel.

They’re also sitting on a number of recordings from the original session avec Wooten.

Parker and Hefner would like to see Mouzon Bigsby back in the studio as a fullstrength trio at some point, but before the pandemic clears, they’re just hoping to be back in the garage. According to Parker, it’s been too humid—a problem the songwriter grapples with esoterically in “Elon Musk.”

“What if Elon Musk can’t save us,” Parker sings on Kino’s finishing track. “What if after dark we go to the park / If it gets too hot we’ll stay in the car.”

the fuzz and distortion and other effects that are critical to the sound,” Hefner says.

“I think the melodies are quite beautiful.”

Hefner brings a softer side to the band via his love of ’70s soul, and Parker says he’s embraced that music, at least in his singing voice. Not only does the Motown sound give Hefner and Wootten a place to lock in as a rhythm section, its R&B sensibility offers Parker’s oblique, pithy lyrics a chance to play off the band’s fuzzy guitar effects.

Awash in a profession known for verbosity—Parker studies medieval and Renaissance drama, while Hefner focuses on 20th century American lit and pop culture—the lead singer says his lyrical approach is an intentional departure from his day-to-day life.

“The whole point of this is it has allowed me an outlet and relationship to language that my professional life doesn’t have,” Parker says. “It’s an opportunity to have a much lighter, carefree approach. I don’t want it to be too cerebral.”

Most of the songs on Kino find that non-cerebral niche without falling into the mundane. The tracks are about relationships and loss, society and loss, finding oneself and, well, losing oneself.

Parker and Hefner say they don’t want their work in Mouzon Bigsby to be overly commercial. Both in their mid-40s, the bibliophiles-cum-musicians aren’t looking to sign a major record contract and tour the globe.

I agree with that idea, as well as the converse: The more intelligent people are, the more mysterious existence seems to them. Since I expect you to be at the peak of your soulful intelligence in the coming weeks, I am quite sure that life will be exquisitely mysterious to you. It’s true that some of its enigmatic qualities may be murky and frustrating, but I suspect that many of them will be magical and delightful. If you ever wanted your life to resemble a poetic art film, you’re going to get your wish.

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov.21): Comedian and actor Aubrey Plaza bragged about the deal she made: “I sold my soul to the devil,” she said. “I’d like to thank the devil.” Plaza is quite popular and successful, so who knows? Brain Research Study

Study for Type 2 Diabetics

Healthy adults between the ages of 18-65 with no current or past serious medical or psychiatric conditions are needed to create a Brain Library. Participants will be asked to complete interviews, cognitive assessments and a brain MRI. Study procedures will be completed over 1-2 visits and will last a total of 4-5 hours. Participants will receive $150 for completing the study. Principal Investigator: James Stone, MD, PhD.

Men and women with type 2 diabetes aged 18-60 needed for study on the effect of the drug empagliflozin (used to control blood sugar) on blood vessels. Study requires two 1-hour outpatient visits and two 7-hour admissions in UVA’s Clinical Research Unit. The study drug is taken for 12 weeks. You must have Type 2 diabetes, be a non-smoker, and not taking insulin. Compensation is $800, paid in installments. Principal Investigator: Eugene Barrett, MD, PhD.

t’s the lure of the river…It’s the small-town atmosphere…It’s the people…It’s close…It’s affordable…

The James Scottsville is situated at the northernmost point of a horseshoe bend in the James River, which has always played an oversized role in the town’s development and character.

Look no farther than the Floods of Record monument at Canal Basin Square.

The highwater mark for 1972’s Hurricane Agnes is at 34 feet. But the “The Great Fresh of 1771” flooded Scottsville another 10 feet above that. After centuries of floods threatening the town’s very existence, levees were built in the 1980s and have contained the James and prevented flooding ever since.

Now, because of that protection, the James River lures residents and visitors in rather than scaring them away. Outfitters in downtown Scottsville provide

three-season paddling and fishing excursions along with rental and shuttle services. Whether you are an avid fisherman or just in the mood for a day of lazy tubing down the river, Class I to III waters accommodate both. While these attract many visitors and tourists to Scottsville, the river also serves as the backdrop to a way of life that is immersed in natural beauty.

Small Towns are Cool Again

He may be biased, but Town Councilor Dan Gritsko calls Scottsville “the best little town in the country.” And if you don’t believe him, just ask for a guided tour or view his YouTube videos that make his argument pretty compelling.

Like many other Scottsville residents, he has lived here 20 years and works hard to create a town he is proud to call home.

He values being part of a real community where he knows his neighbors and can have a positive impact.

The most recent count lists Scottsville’s population at just under 600.

That’s about the same as when REALTOR® Kevin Quick, with RE/MAX Realty Specialists, moved to town more than 20 years ago. Even though the numbers haven’t changed much in the past two decades, Scottsville’s stature certainly has. Quick has watched Scottsville evolve from “a little burg on the southern end of Albemarle County, to a serious attraction.

Closer Than You Think It’s always been 18 miles from Scottsville to Charlottesville along Route 20.

“A few years ago, we really weren’t in the running for commuters that had to make their way to Charlottesville. I think people are discovering what we have and are realizing that the short commute is worth having this lifestyle.”

Ward agrees that interest is building steadily. “Cool little restaurants and businesses make Scottsville appealing.

People want to get out of the city, get away from their HOA’s. Lots of people are retiring from up north but don’t want Florida. We have the perfect climate, a wonderful, caring community and tremendous access to nature. We’re getting, and welcoming, transplants of all ages and all walks of life.”

Business as the Backbone Solid businesses are critical to the town’s success. A walk down Valley Street (Route 20) makes it clear that the basics are covered. Banking, lodging, grocers, restaurants, even a funeral home allow residents to get what they need in town.

As SCAN’s body of work continues to grow and expand, so does Scottsville’s reputation as a welcome home for art and outdoor lovers.

It is unlikely the town will regain the prominence it enjoyed in the 18th and 19th centuries as a lively center for commerce and transportation where freight and passengers traversed the James River and the Kanawha Canal. Today, Scottsville embraces its heritage with more than 150 structures in its compact historic district.

The Scottsville Museum and Canal Basin Square along Main Street display maps, pictures, equipment, and batteau and packet boats that graced the canal.

Scottsville’s levee walk passes under Route 20 to connect both sides of town from Bird Street to Ferry Street. History unfolds with views of the James, the Kanawha Canal, and the Richmond and Allegheny Railroad that eventually replaced commerce on the Canal in the 1880s.

With the loss of that commerce and 21 devastating floods, the town languished for many years. But Scottsville’s future as a vibrant, attractive town is on the upswing.

You won’t find many chain restaurants and franchisees in Scottsville. “Unique community businesses owned and run by people who have a stake in Scottsville’s success make up the business district,” says Ward. “They take the time to smile and chat with you and treat you like neighbors.”

The Lumpkin Restaurant and Motel, where the giant rooster out front isn’t the only chicken in town, is renowned for breakfast and homemade comfort food all day long. Or start your morning at Baine’s Books & Coffee with coffee, pastries, and some reading on the side.

Both are sure places to meet neighbors and friends.

No self-respecting outdoor town is complete without a brewery. James River Brewery and their award-winning River Runner beer and the beer garden tucked in the back, bring regulars and visitors to enjoy the cozy pub feel and frequent music.

The Batteau Restaurant and Wine Bar offer great food in a unique setting with both indoor and porch dining. Crab cakes and steak are customer favorites, along with catfish, batteau fries and pork skewers.

Two blocks down, Tavern on the James also offers indoor and outdoor seating and pub style American food. Famous for their welcoming environment and Tavern Burger, the restaurant and bar occupy the primo corner at Route 20 and Main Street in downtown Scottsville. If you’re lucky, you’ll catch the Scott-ettes, dancers in their 60s and 70s who revel in the Tavern’s fun atmosphere. They may even invite you to join them.

Across the street is the Scottsville Supply Company. Thanks to the efforts of this locally owned bee supply and gift store, Scottsville is the first official Bee City USA in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
