Scaling down Small weddings are timely—and might be a brilliant idea

T

he coronavirus pandemic has forced us to reassess many things about our lives, including how we celebrate milestones. Many couples who always assumed they’d have a big wedding with 100 or 200 guests—or even more—have put the brakes on those plans. And just like the idea of working from home, the trend toward small and intimate weddings shows signs of sticking around even post-pandemic. Is the micro wedding here to stay?

Even before COVID-19, Real Simple reported an uptick in the number of small weddings, chalking up the trend to couples’ urge to slash costs—which run, for the average wedding, around $34,000. Local planner Sarah Fay Waller, whose company is Day by Fay, says it’s true that smaller weddings can cost less—though as always, the devil’s in the details. Food, drink, décor, and every other budget item can vary wildly. “In theory the smaller guest counts mean a less expensive wedding,” says Waller, who defines a micro wedding as 35 or fewer guests.

She also cautions that those who initially planned large weddings, and then had to downsize because of pandemic safety concerns, faced even higher costs—adding extra tables, for example, to help guests maintain social distance.

What does a small wedding actually look like? For starters, the venue options may be different—perhaps a restaurant (Waller mentions the third floor of The Local, the back room of Tavola, or the Clifton Inn) or a smaller space within a winery or cidery, like Grace Estate or Septenary. “There are a handful of venues that really lend themselves to intimacy,” Waller says.

Crafting a guest list changes, too. The question is less “Who are all the people who have meant something to me or my family?” and more “Who is in my innermost circle?” Couples need to talk through their priorities. “They realize who their nearest and dearest are,” says Waller. In 2020, she saw clients forced to uninvite some guests when curtailing their original plans—an awkward situation for everyone. On the plus side, at this point, almost anyone will be familiar enough with Zoom to watch your wedding from afar if you decide to invite some guests on a virtual basis.

Some planners and bloggers see the micro wedding as a chance to plan out-of-the-box entertainment like helicopter rides or magicians. If you’re paying for fewer plated dinners,

centerpieces, and welcome bags, perhaps you gain wiggle room in your budget for items you wouldn’t have normally considered. Other couples might see the smaller scale as an opportunity to break some rules and go a bit casual—let’s say, opting for a thrifted vintage dress instead of a traditional gown.

Waller says that about half the couples currently approaching her are planning weddings for fewer than 100 guests—a real shift from what she’d experienced in her pre-COVID career. “For late 2021 or even into 2022, weddings are looking like they’ll be a little bit smaller,” she says.

Ultimately, the biggest difference between a large and small wedding is probably the couple’s ability to have real conversations with each guest, rather than just a passing smile.

That’s appealing no matter what’s going on in the headlines.

COVID WEDDING?

If you are going ahead with a wedding—even a small one—during the pandemic, be prepared for certain complications. “You really want to ensure all of your guests are tested,” says Waller; some of her clients have paid for the testing themselves. Then you’ll need hand sanitizer, spaced-out seating, perhaps a plexiglass barrier at the bar, and a clear policy on masks. “It’s a different way to celebrate, very unusual and surreal,” Waller says.

Smaller venues doesn’t mean sacrificing style

ig weddings are so 2019. All you need for a great reception is enough room for those you truly love—sorry weird college roommates and mom’s bridge group—a dance floor, and gourmet sustenance.

“I think smaller venues are going to be very popular in the coming year,” says Patrick McClure of Downtown Mall event space Penny Heart. Smaller venues “don’t carry a lot of the overhead, so it can be an affordable experience.”

Of course, small spaces don’t mean you have to go small on style. If you’d also like beautifully appointed rooms in plum locations, have a look at these five spots.

Old Metropolitan Hall

101 E. Main St. Old Metropolitan Hall on the mall accommodates from ceremony to reception. It’s the ideal post-vow destination but can also host nuptials, with the Sanctuary at the Haven next

door to expand the space. If you’re looking for a seated dinner for up to 100 or a cocktail soirée for 175, the Old Met is your spot. Details are key: tall ceilings, exposed brick, chandeliers, wood floors, elegant dance floor. Done.

Lewis Catherine House

1033 Afton Mountain Rd., Afton The Lewis Catherine House is relatively new to weddings but no newcomer to style. The fivebedroom rental home spills onto scenic acres diagonal from Veritas Vineyards and bucolic splendor. “It’s a great venue for the family to stay and celebrate the special weekend,” says one Facebook review of the venue.

Common House

or couples who don’t match the traditional brideand-groom cake-topper image, the wedding planning process can have an extra layer of stress. LGBTQ couples sometimes find that researching vendors means navigating the discomfort of not knowing which businesses are open to working with same-sex couples.

“It can feel stressful to be asking questions around that and not knowing what kind of response you’re going to get,” says Amy-Sarah Marshall, president of the Charlottesville Pride Community Network. “You can feel unsure about what your experience is going to be like.”

There can be some tricky issues involved. Marshall, who has conducted trainings for local wedding vendors on how to best serve queer couples, says it’s incumbent upon vendors to be aware of their own biases. “As humans, we want to stick people in our gender binary and make them male or female, or we see what they look like and think we understand everything that goes along with that,” she says. “That’s making a lot of assumptions.”

Rather than, for example, forcing every same-sex couple into traditional masculine and feminine roles, vendors would do well to start with a blank slate as to what a wedding needs to look like. It’s helpful, Marshall says, to start with an open-ended intake. “Ask people, ‘How would you prefer to be called? What are the pronouns? Who’s involved in the ceremony?’—instead of ‘Who’s the bride, who’s the groom?’ Make yourself a list of questions that are open and allow people to define how they want to be identified.”

Every part of the traditional ceremony, from who carries flowers to which parents accompany their children down the aisle, tends to emphasize gender roles. So vendors need to be ready to support same-sex couples as they reimagine these rituals. “People may want to reenact a traditional ceremony or they may need to get more creative with how they do the ceremony,” says Marshall, adding that vendors can easily research options before sitting down with potential clients. “There are lots of examples online of ways people have renegotiated a wedding ceremony to accommodate different needs.”

Finally, she points out, family rejection can be a big hurdle for many queer people, and one that vendors should be aware of. “If you don’t have your family coming,” she says, “and you have to plug in different people, a vendor asking, ‘Where’s the mother of the bride?’ can be awkward and uncomfortable.’” But then, basic courtesy with any type of client, of course, should prompt vendors to be more sensitive than that.

At The Wool Factory, the look is industrial chic

W

hen The Wool Factory opened its doors to the public last July, it brought a new kind of venue to the Charlottesville wedding scene, says sales director Claire Macfarlan.

“Charlottesville is very well known for barns and vineyards,” she says, “but we don’t have a lot of industrial spaces.” As a renovated textile mill that dates to 1868, The Wool Factory conjures a less-familiar aspect of local history. “Our aesthetic is very different,” she says. And here’s another bonus: It’s huge. The space can host up to 360 seated guests.

Yet it can be very intimate, too. Macfarlan says that flexibility is one of The Wool Factory’s biggest pros. Its spacious main hall can be divided, plus it has a number of smaller spaces like the future Broadcloth restaurant and the Workshop loft—spots that couples have used

And it has outdoor spaces like the courtyard (which can host bonfires, if that’s your thing) and the lawn along the banks of Moore’s Creek. As a private event venue, the spot offers in-house catering, and can host anything from a micro wedding for 12 guests to a grand fête for hundreds.

Though it’s really only a stone’s throw from downtown, The Wool Factory and its Woolen Mills neighborhood setting feels a world away from the mall. “It’s a hyper-industrial space dropped in the middle of the woods. It’s an exposed brick backdrop and steel beams, but you can walk right outside and have a running creek behind you,” says Macfarlan. “There’s even a small beach 100 yards from our front door.”

Renovations to the building focused on honoring its history, Macfarlan says. “There’s a lot that we left as it was—the concrete floors, all the original paint, and most of the light fixtures are original and refurbished.” Sun

A new cake baker utilizes the best of what’s around

I

n some ways, launching a business after a global pandemic began was fortuitous for Cake Bloom’s Susan Sweeney. With couples downsizing their weddings, that meant downsizing the cake, too—just the kind of thing Sweeney specializes in. Cake Bloom, a botanical cake bakery, incorporates greenery and florals into each design. And what’s more, her cakes are small, starting with the “baby cake” size that feeds four to six people.

“Most of my weddings this year were very lastminute, rescheduled events, so they were small,” Sweeney says. “I created a line of twotier Garden Cake packages for these intimate weddings that seemed to work well.” We asked Sweeney to tell us a bit more about her business, style, and her own wedding cake.

C-VILLE Weddings: Tell me a little about your background and how it led you to start Cake Bloom.

Susan Sweeney: I moved to San Francisco in

my early 20s to attend culinary school, but it was my years working in the historic Ferry Building where I discovered the farmers market culture of the Bay Area—and the great diversity of California flowers and produce—that really inspired me to bake. I’m a big nature girl, and I think cakes are my way of expressing the joy it brings me. Being in Charlottesville is like a whole new world of flavors and produce to explore, and I’m just getting started.

CW: How does Cake Bloom differ from other cake vendors?

SS: I would say my style is what sets me apart.

After getting engaged in July, Eliza Strickland and Allen Peacock knew right away they were ready to get married—and they didn’t want to postpone plans due to COVID restrictions. So Strickland asked a close friend, Sally Branch, to help her create an intimate wedding.

“We knew we wanted to keep all the traditional elements of a wedding, just on a smaller scale,” Eliza says. That meant downsizing a few key things. That’s when they came up with a “first dance” floor. And having hired Aztec Rentals for their clear tent (to drink in the view at their venue, Oakley Farm), they asked the company to make it happen.

“When Sally called with the idea of a 6' x 6' dance floor, they had a good laugh and said it was the smallest dance floor they had ever done,” Eliza says. But the addition was a hit with their 28 guests.

Using fresh florals requires a lot of knowledge about materials. There’s the safety aspect and knowing where blooms and greenery comes from (I use local, organic growers exclusively) to ensure materials aren’t sprayed, which is so common in the wedding industry. And of course knowing what blooms are toxic and nontoxic, which requires a great deal of attention. Lastly, I think I bring an artistry to the styling that is uniquely Cake Bloom. Staying within the parameters of safety, I seek out the most interesting vines, blooms, or flowering herbs I can find to create something really special.

CW: Can you tell me about some of the decorations/botanicals you put on the cakes for each season?

SS: I’m actually working with a few growers

and buying seeds to map things out a bit better for both my fresh and pressed botanical cakes. Since this was my first season in Virginia, I’ve been learning as I go. In early spring, I’ll be pressing forsythia, lilac, and wild violets; in late spring, lavender, parsley flower, and chamomile; in summer, celosia, calendula, and bee balm.

Being in Charlottesville is like a whole new world of flavors and produce to explore, and I’m just getting started.

SPARKLE B Y S T E P H A N I E VO G T M A N Dating back to the ancient Greeks in the Sixth Century B.C., wedding toasts have been a way to express good will and luck to the newly married couple.

The clinking of glassware was originally a way to ward off evil spirits looking to cause mischief at the ceremony. Sparkling wine is commonly used for toasts in modern times, being considered a universal pairing wine that easily accompanies a wide variety of foods. There are many methods of production, and sparkling wine delights with its effervescent nature and varying tones. If you are considering a toast for your wedding day, why not support our local wineries, which have honed their sparkling skills and are putting out amazing products. Here are some of our favorites—cheers!

Early Mountain: 2017 Blanc de Blanc Brut Reserve $45 Comprised of 100 percent chardonnay, the 2017 Blanc de Brut Reserve is aged for two years on its lees (dead yeast cells that give a rich and creamy texture to wine). Pale gold, with notes of pink lady apples and jasmine on the nose, it has a palate of light honey, clementine, and nougat. The current owners and winemaking team at Early Mountain are incredibly enthusiastic in their endeavor to share wine education, so be sure to ask about their sparkling program!

Veritas: 2015 Mousseux $45 Head winemaker Emily Pelton was on a business trip in Loire, France, with her family when she first encountered a style of sparkling wine called Mousseux (“mousse” in French). The wine had a mouthfeel reminiscent of a fresh mousse, and after falling in love with it, she wanted to make a rosé sparkling that emulated the wine she tasted in France.

A product of passion, the 2015 Mousseux is made of 80 percent cabernet franc, and 20 percent chardonnay, and is a pale pink color. Aromas of strawberry and baked pear give way to soft flavors of raspberry, marzipan, and freshly baked brioche. It has perfectly balanced acidity and creamy texture, made in the traditional method.

Cave Ridge Vineyards: Cuvée Select $28 Cave Ridge Vineyards’ owner/winemaker Randy Phillips takes great pride in a wide selection of sparkling wine in which he utilizes the Charmat method. While all the vineyard’s sparkling is worth a mention, my personal favorite is his Cuvée Select. Made of 80 percent chardonnay and 20 percent traminette, it is bright gold with a full scent of honeysuckle and apples. Of all the sparkling wines on this list, this wine has the most rounded and soft mouth-feel, and has rich flavors of honey, yellow apples, and lychee fruit. Of special note would be Phillips’ “bubble-decker” bus, a classic English double-decker that has been renovated with a “bubbly bar” to enjoy at festivals, weddings, and events.

Ankida Ridge Vineyards: 2016 Sparkling Blanc de Blancs $58 Ankida Ridge is well known for its pinot noir, but its brut is excellent too.

Straw gold with tiny bubbles, this wine has bright acidity and was aged in neutral French oak barrels. Lime zest, green apple skin, and rich minerality

round out this traditional sparkling. And make sure you spend the day at the estate, where you might be greeted by a welcoming committee of vineyard dogs or roaming sheep!

Thibaut-Janisson Winery: Virginia Fizz $20 The most prolific sparkling wine producer, Claude Thibaut partnered with lifelong friend Manuel Janisson to create sparkling wines in the Monticello AVA region. At a great price point, the Fizz has a honey golden color and a nose of peach pie and yellow flowers. Creamy with a touch of acidity, the flavor profile shows characteristics of spiced yellow apples and marzipan. Tiny bubbles form as a result of Claude's mastery of the traditional method.

Trump Winery: 2014 Blanc de Noir $55 While Trump Winery is best known for its Blanc de Blancs, it is the only winery on this list able to produce a Blanc de Noir, composed of 100 percent estate grown pinot. Head winemaker Jonathan Wheeler shows great passion and care with this wine by utilizing early harvesting and gentle pressing techniques, and it is a labor of love. The rich nose carries notes of Bing cherry and strawberry, with bright cranberry and toast on the palate. While there’s bright acidity to this wine, there is a nice roundness to the mouthfeel to create a gentle balance. There's a limited amount of the 2014 vintage left, but the 2015 vintage will be available soon.

Bluestone Winery: 2018 Blanc de Blancs $30 One-hundred percent estate chardonnay, the 2018 Blanc de Blancs has bright color and minerality. Fine bubbles with orange zest on the nose showcase a palate with Meyer lemons and wet stone. Bluestone Winery’s estate has a high elevation that allows for diurnal shifts (extreme temperature changes between night and day), and this helps preserve the balance of fruit flavors and fresh acidity in grapes. Done in the traditional method, this bubbly is one not to miss.

Ducard Vineyards: 2017 XOXO Blanc de Blancs $45 Set in the valley with the backdrop of Old Rag Mountain and White Oak Canyon, Ducard Vineyards is a gorgeous estate. Its XOXO Blanc de Blancs is made with 100 percent chardonnay, and released this last holiday season.

The brightest on this list, the XOXO smells of green apples and honeysuckle, with mouthwatering clementine and honeydew melon on the palate, and it pairs best with decadent foods and desserts served at weddings.

alk about last-minute decisions: With only a week to go before their planned ceremony, Emily and Qiang still didn’t have a venue.

Enter Waterperry Farm, the romantic Free Union gardens and the only spot with the couple’s chosen date still available.

“It was so gorgeous and the perfect fit for the kind of intimate ceremony we had in mind,” Emily says.

Intimate indeed. The ceremony, which was led by Qiang’s Ph.D. advisor, was attended by a small group of friends. A Zoom call was set up between the couple and their parents (who were unable to attend in person) to complete the traditional Chinese tea ceremony.

“It’s a way for the bride and groom to show their gratitude to their parents for raising them,” says Emily. “Our parents were so happy to be a part of our big day—even if it was through Zoom!”

P

re-pandemic, Paige and Cole had planned a fancy, 250-person black-tie wedding, with tuxedos, floor-length gowns, a large band from Atlanta, and food stations (“so people could eat but also keep partying!” Paige says). But, after mailing their save the dates in March of 2020, just as everything began shutting down, they realized the fallout from COVID-19 wasn’t shortterm. They needed to pivot.

The new plan—paring down the guest list to 50, moving the ceremony to their family chapel and the reception to Paige’s parents’ home— came with a few added benefits which, according to Paige, may have been even better than the original.

“We both agreed that having a smaller guest list was actually kind of nice,” she says. “Having a smaller group meant we got to visit with everyone invited and actually spend time with our closest friends and family throughout the weekend.”

Plus, the new venue meant Paige and Cole could get married at St. James Chapel, the same place her parents had been married. They were even able to ride in the getaway car her parents had at their wedding.

Says Paige, “While our wedding plans had been ‘messed up’ due to COVID, my Mom and Dickie [Morris, the couple’s wedding planner] worked together to make sure everything was still as special as a non-pandemic wedding.”

HIGH SCHOOL SWEETHEARTS

While attending St. Anne’s-Belfield, Paige and Cole dated for about a year and, later, went to Cole’s senior prom together. The two kept in touch throughout college and, after graduation, decided to “give it a real shot,” says Paige.

WALK AMONGST THE FLOWERS

As guests progressed from the backyard to the reception tent, the color of the flowers became more vibrant with lilac, fuchsia, yellows, and greens. “It was so fun and cheerful,” Paige says.

SOMETHING FISHY

The couple rented a boat bar from Stonegate Event Rentals, and outfitted it as a raw bar, offering guests oysters, shrimp, and tuna tacos.

A

nna has always loved the movie Pride & Prejudice, so she knew when it came time to start planning her wedding, that would be the jumping-off point. “The antique, romantic elegance without seeming too cliché was the ultimate goal,” she says. “I wanted everything to feel very authentic.”

She started with the flowers, creating an elaborate plan for her April wedding with florist Tourterelle—lots of purple flowers, cherry blossoms, and tulips. But when COVID-19 necessitated a date change, the plan needed to pivot.

“Tourterelle transformed our floral vision for something that could embrace our late summer wedding,” says the bride. “They delivered the largest, most amazing roses I have ever seen.”

The reception décor followed suit; Blue Ridge Event Production draped each pole in the tent, and hung romantic light fixtures above the tables.

“I can’t lie that my favorite part had to be the five chandeliers that took my mind to the magical and opulent houses Pride & Prejudice showcased,” Anna says.

QUICK CHANGE

The bride’s favorite moment from the wedding was seeing her new husband’s and guests’ reactions after she changed into her reception dress.

PRECIOUS MOMENTS

The bride and groom decided to do a first look before the wedding, giving them a chance to exchange their more intimate vows and, later, join their guests for cocktail hour. “It calmed both of our nerves and is something I will cherish and always look back on,” Anna says.

DIY DÉCOR

To ensure every detail would turn out as she imagined, Anna and her mom created a few important pieces for the event, transforming two mirrors into a seating chart display and welcome sign.

SCENE-SETTING

Snaking up the gravel drive to The Clifton, and landing at the Colonial house “pretty much sealed the deal,” Annqa says. Since it was also a place the couple’s guests could stay for the weekend, they knew right away it was where they wanted to be married.

YOU + ME

Cole and Anna met in a sixth grade math class, but it wasn’t until junior year that they became friends. Then, after attending the homecoming dance together, they decided to make it official. Even while attending two separate colleges, they kept their relationship going and, after graduation, Cole popped the question at Pippin Hill Farm & Vineyards with Anna’s friends and family hidden on a side porch, waiting to surprise her.

harlottesville had always held a special place in the hearts of Sarai and Cristhian: After meeting at George Mason University, Sarai began working as a researcher at UVA. Cristhian would drive the four hours from his hometown to visit, and together they’d explore the town, visiting Carter Mountain, IX Art Park, and Grit Coffee.

“It was so fitting to then choose a location in the city where we fell in love,” Sarai says. That location: Common House. “We loved the idea of rooftop views of the city and Blue Ridge mountains for the ceremony,” she says, “and a rich, darker theme for the reception.”

The space’s design elements spoke to the couple—the mix of wood, brass, distressed metals, and colorful artwork. It was just the spot for their intimate rooftop ceremony.

Red and white florals contrasted the venue’s bold artwork and turquoise walls, while flowing chiffon at the rooftop ceremony softened the rustic wood and metal elements.

One of Sarai’s favorite moments from her wedding? Her dad walking her down the aisle.

“We almost lost my dad to COVID, and having him there to put my veil on, walk me down the aisle, and dedicate me a song during the ceremony was so special,” she says.

SWEETS FOR THE SWEETIES

The couple wanted to incorporate desserts traditional to their heritage. While Cristhian chose a Bolivian dessert called alfajores, Sarai included espumillas, a soft meringue treat from El Salvador.

DIY PRO

The night before the wedding, Sarai, her mom, and her sisters worked to put together a bouquet while her dad was quiet in the next room. “Suddenly he interrupts the chaos and says, ‘I finished a bouquet.’

When we turn around, we see the most beautiful arrangement,” says the bride. “It was so special to have an arrangement that my dad designed.”

The family-style steak and potatoes meal pulled double duty: It cut down on staff interaction with guests, and satisfied the cravings of the couple.

y the time they stood at the altar in Stuarts Draft’s MayLane Barn, Ebonee and Danielle had already been married two years. A member of the U.S. Air Force, Ebonee was just starting recruitment and basic training when the couple got engaged, so they decided to make it official sooner rather than later.

“It was just better having that peace of mind that my name would be on whatever orders she received when her training was complete,” Danielle says. So they had a quick, 10-minute ceremony, then lunch with friends at a Mexican restaurant, “like it was any other day.”

In the intervening two years, they saved up and homed in on what they wanted for their dream wedding.

For the brides, that meant a day that felt “natural and romantic,” from the autumn color scheme (burgundy, gold, and navy blue) to the flowers (loose, airy arrangements that incorporated plenty of greenery).

“We knew we wanted to have a fall wedding because we love seeing the color of the leaves changing around that time,” Danielle says. “The venue has a beautiful field, pond, rolling hills, a beautiful barn, and plenty of trees with changing colors.”

Aside from the décor, the couple felt it was important to have their family share in the day.

Both the DJ and officiant were Ebonee’s cousins, as were the flower girls. Two of Dani’s cousins served as bridesmaids.

“It just made everything so much more personal and meaningful,” Danielle says.

A huge Steelers fan, Ebonee’s favorite moment was walking into the reception to the tune of “Black and Yellow” by Wiz Kalifa. The couple strode in waving their Terrible Towels.

DRINK UP

Danielle’s dad lent a hand on signage, creating an unplugged sign (asking guests to refrain from using cellphones during the ceremony) and a sign for the couple’s signature drinks, which incorporated their cats’ names: “Koda’s Carmel Apple Cat-tail” and ”Willow’s Orange Cinnamon Whiskey Whiskers.” The sign now hangs in their kitchen at home.

THROUGH THE AGES

The couple DIY’d their table numbers, which included a picture of each of them at the age (Table 1 had a picture of the brides at 1 year old).

“It was a great way for family to look back at special moments in time and a great way for our friends who we met later in life to see what all we were up to before we met,” Danielle says.

LET’S EAT!

For the menu, Danielle and Ebonee knew they wanted to incorporate their favorite—Mexican food. They approached Bridgewater-based El Charro and, though the restaurant had never catered before, they got their wish. The couple offered guests a steak and chicken fajita bar and a nacho bar, with chips, salsa, and queso.

LONG TIME COMING

Though the two were good friends throughout high school, it wasn’t until after Ebonee graduated that she worked up the courage to confess she had more-than-friendly feelings for Danielle. Turns out, the feeling was mutual. “I was shocked by this,” Ebonee says. “It was like we were meant to be.”

VP of sales in the tech industry by day, Tessa also moonlights as an abstract painter. It was a no-brainer, then, that her artwork needed to be included in her big day.

“I love blending colors and building texture with my paintings, so I wanted to focus on creating the perfect palette that added pops of color to complement the natural aesthetic [of Pippin Hill],” she says.

The bride painted mini canvases for each place of the 125 place settings, as well as created the background for the wedding invitations (designed by her maid of honor, Christina Janczak), escort card sign, and menus. And, the pièce de résistance, the bride even painted a 6'x6' welcome sign that her guests saw upon arrival.

Other elements of the wedding pulled in colors from her art, as well. The flowers, for instance, were meant to have a fresh-from-thefarm look, but with slightly unique colors.

“I wanted the flowers to complement my artwork and palette (blues, greens, peaches, coppers),” Tessa says. In fact, the flowers played a big part in the couple’s favorite memory from the wedding: standing under the floral arch, exchanging their vows as the sun set behind them.

“It was the perfect moment to say ‘I do’ to my best friend,” says the bride.

After the ceremony, the bride and groom danced with their mothers in Pippin Hill’s courtyard under bistro lights. “They made this amazing day happen and have been our support system through it all,” Tessa says. “An unspeakably special moment for both of us.”

Steve’s sister, Madeline, owns Maddie Bakes, a Chicago-based bakery. She made the couple’s custom cake, complete with decorative sugar flowers that mimicked Tessa’s abstract art theme.

CHOICES, CHOICES

“[Pippin Hill] was everything we wanted,” Tessa says: It was close to Washington, D.C., where they live, and it embraced its bucolic surroundings.

Plus, they knew the food and wine would impress guests. A surf-and-turf menu combined both the bride and groom's favorite foods, and a warm veggie salad nodded to the fall season.

MEET AND RE-MEET

After graduating from Miami of Ohio, Tessa and Steve reconnected at a mutual friend’s party. Steve asked Tessa for her number and then convinced her to give him a kiss on the cheek in exchange for buying her a drink.

We go together When her family heard that the owners of Stelle Rose, an historic train station in Staunton, were restoring the building, Ashley Kellison booked the venue right away.

“In my mind it was the ideal place to give me a vintage theme,” she says. “I was picturing the ’40s era, where you see the women sending their men off to war and them kissing at the train station. So romantic!”

Ashley and her fiancé, Vincent, rented furniture from Richmond-based Paisley & Jade, and were able to get portraits in front of lines of dormant trains on the property.

“It really made it seem like we had turned back time,” Ashley says.

And they got lucky: Only one train came by their ceremony site near the tracks, about 30 minutes before they said “I do.”
