Inside stories from more than 100 local businesses
As a Charlottesville-area resident since the late 1960s, I’m often asked about the “changes.” Mostly this comes from people worried we are overbuilding roads, houses and stores, and diluting the small-town character that brought us or kept us here. My answer is that Charlottesville is better than ever. This isn’t because I especially like retail experiences far from the old town center, or that I don’t worry that the latest hair salon will finally tip the scales against barbershops such as Staples (where I got my first cut). It’s because the mix of old and new makes for a fascinating and engaging small town. An award-winning winery in the county, a modern architect on the Downtown Mall. A vegetarian menu over here, a carnivore’s dream over there. As we huddled at the Blue Moon Diner 30 years ago, hatching a plan for a “C-Ville” newspaper, it was appropriate that we
sat on a Main Street that reflected the Old Charlottesville—think tire stores, radiator shops, the bus station—while surrounded by the hipsters who evolved into the creative class that helped make C-Ville (the town and the newspaper) what it is today. In the following pages, you will see ads from a mix of businesses, from Settle Tire Co. (they fix my cars) to Wiley Real Estate (Peter Wiley was my neighbor 35 years ago and later worked here at the paper) to Blue Mountain Brewery (a pioneer in the huge local beer movement and founded by another C-VILLE office alum, Mandi Smack). By joining our “We are C-VILLE” campaign, these advertisers are reaching out to our readers and underwriting our work as a community newspaper in a community that needs one. Love them back to find out how rich life in C’ville can be. BILL CHAPMAN, FOUNDING EDITOR

After studying Anthropology and Sociology at Northeastern University, I began my painting career in Boston Massachussetts at the Boston Museum School of Fine Arts. I took classes at the Boston Center for Adult Education and the University of Virginia. I am a member at McGuffey Art Center in Charlottesville, VA, and a member of the Academy of Fine Arts in Lynchburg, Va. At the Boston Museum School of Fine Arts I took a watercolor class with Kaji Aso. This was the only class I’ve ever taken in watercolor and the journey towards the self began. His influence on me on a zen level propelled me to lean towards expressing the inner life in my work. After some 30 years hopefully a blend of the inner and outer manifests in balance, harmony, and peace. My aim is to make a contribution of beauty and peace in the world, an energetic that can be felt and transmitted to the viewer. Painting is a joyous expression of who I am. I approach painting as ceremony, meaning sacred; making concrete and giving form to the spiritual, honoring the self, bringing up images from the unconscious and giving them place. The smallest act can become a powerful ritual. An act peformed with symbolic intent sets up an exchange between the unconscious and conscious that allows for progression toward unity. Being present in the painting process, focusing on the process not the product is my intention. It’s an allowance and acceptance.

opened its doors in 1997, and since then owner Suzanne Crane and her assistant Brenda Roberts have become part of the fabric of the Earlysville and Charlottesville communities; their tiles grace the patient bathrooms in the new Martha Jefferson hospital and their hand made ceramic cremation urns are available through Hill and Wood Funeral Home. They have donated countless pieces to art auctions and fundraisers, and have entertained Earlysville commuters with their roadside chalkboard for years. Suzanne’s pottery is coveted by collectors nationwide. Arthur Blank, owner of the Atlanta Falcons, has two of her handmade sinks in his Montana home, and she’s made a piece for writer Anna Quindlen. From simple bowls and mugs, to wedding and housewarming gifts, to gorgeous mica-shade lamps, to tiles for backsplashes and fireplace surrounds, Mud Dauber Pottery is Earlysville’s little secret. Experience, Integrity, and Unsurpassed Market Knowledge Established in 1980, McLean Faulconer Inc. has become one of the premier real estate agencies in Charlottesville, Virginia. Founders Stephen McLean and Jim Faulconer grew up in Charlottesville and knew there was no other place they would like to raise a family of their own. Based on their own personal experience, Stephen and Jim realized they could offer clients unmatched knowledge about the local area and all that it has to offer. Over thirty years later, McLean Faulconer continues to embrace this concept and so do the agents that represent them. Stephen and Jim have assembled a roster of the area’s most experienced agents. Like the company founders, our dedicated agents are long-established locals and have deep-rooted relationships throughout the local community. Careful assessment goes into every property we list and our agents can offer a referral network that you will not find at any other agency. McLean Faulconer may not be the largest agency, but we have proven our personal approach offers the best real estate service possible to both buyers and sellers.
McLean Faulconer currently has more than one-third of the total area market listings and outsells every
other firm in the area on a per capita basis. We believe our success is a direct reflection of our personal approach, attention to detail, and the overwhelming depth of knowledge we can provide to our clients. Real estate is a complex business, but thanks to our experienced, well-respected agents, McLean Faulconer can make the process of buying or selling your home easy and enjoyable.

elebrating our 25th year; Greenberry’s is the oldest coffee roaster in Charlottesville. Sean & Roxanne Simmons, the husband and wife duo behind Greenberry’s, knew they wanted to bring a higher quality of coffee to the public from the start. After years in the corporate world, they decided to learn the heart and soul of coffee from Alfred Peet, the pioneer who first brought high-end coffee to America in the 1960s. From that knowledge grew Greenberry’s Coffee, named after Sean’s ancestor who exhibited the same dedication to hard work and quality that they wanted to bring to the coffee world.
Now equipped with over twenty-five years of coffee roasting experience and a broad range of food service solutions, Greenberry’s Coffee has expanded regionally and internationally, including our third location in Osaka Japan, with 10 more to be opened by the end of 2017! Greenberry’s has also expanded into the Middle East with 6 stores open, and 5 more coming by the end of the year. Maintaining the home away from home feel of the stores has kept the atmosphere consistent through a variety of locations and markets, with the Barracks Road location being the origin of this international success story.

After moving to Charlottesville, Virginia in 1991 and getting married at the University of Virginia Chapel, they decided to open their first store a few yards away off University Avenue in 1992, and soon after opened another location in an old shoe repair store in the heart of town. It quickly became a community meeting place, serving the town as a social hub and source for high end, specialty coffees, a rarity at the time. The store became so popular, the door hinges had to replaced twice a year! They insisted on roasting themselves so they could control all aspects of quality – from green bean sourcing, to roasting and serving to their customers. Still in operation, Greenberry’s Coffee in Barracks Road still serves some of the same customers that came in the very first day.

One local landmark stands out in the Charlottesville community in two significant ways: it has survived multiple reinventions of itself over its 100+ years of history and has a story that both reflects and challenges longstanding notions about life in this very special pocket of Virginia. The seventeen-room Villa Crawford, the north wing of Keswick Hall, was built in 1912. Five sets of owners occupied the mansion on this idyllic 311-acre Villa Crawford, 1914
working farm during its total of 35 years as a private

residence, and all brought their own measure of elegance and intrigue. Villa Crawford became Keswick Country Club in 1948, serving as a community gathering place with food, drink, swimming, golf and tennis as well as numerous owners, members and guests during a fascinating period of the 20th century. Unfortunate and unexpected events forced its closure after several decades and resulted in years of sad Oval pool, late 1960s
disrepair. With boards on the windows, it was purchased in 1990 by Sir Bernard Ashley and utterly transformed

into Keswick Hall, a world-class five-star resort now owned locally and spanning 600 acres. It boasts a new service spa, state-of-the-art fitness center, gorgeous tennis courts, beautifully refreshed guest rooms and much more. Its antiques and original artwork still evoke feelings of comfortable elegance, and its spectacular grounds invite both meandering and adventure. Both local and overnight Villa Crawford, 1990

Threepenny Cafe In 1928, playwright Bertolt Brecht changed how people thought about the fine art of opera with The Threepenny Opera. Bold, innovative, honest and fun, this work showed that opera could be great and still be down to earth. When we opened Threepenny Cafe in 2014, we sought to do the same thing with the notion of “fine dining.” We wanted to serve delicious, innovative cuisine made from the freshest Ingredients—but in a fun, casual setting. A setting where you can break bread with family and friends, bring your dog to the patio, and kick back. But still enjoy the finest in food and drink. As if that wasn’t enough, we added in a total commitment to healthful and responsibly sourced products. We firmly believe that what we put on your plate matters to your health. And to the health of the planet. That good food shouldn’t be artificial, highly processed or mysteriously produced. When Chef Jeff Deloff joined our team in 2015, our efforts took on a new and exceptional energy. Trained at the Culinary Institute of America, Chef Jeff is devoted to honesty and simplicity. He takes great ingredients, respects the integrity of their true flavors and turns out wholesome dishes that make your palate sing. He also makes sure that:
All of our meats are local and pasture-raised
We serve wild-caught seafood—approved by the
We serve local grains, dairy and produce— organically farmed when available

George began his restaurant career with a small breakfast place on Main St. in the 1950’s where he worked to fulfill his dream of opening a big time steakhouse, one similar to those he had seen in New York City upon arriving to this country. The Aberdeen Barn is just that – a ‘big time steakhouse’ – a true upscale dining establishment run to the highest standard. Familiar yet innovative, traditional yet forward-thinking, these are all attributes unique to the Aberdeen Barn experience. Dinner at “the Barn” has become as central to the Charlottesville experience as tailgating at Scott Stadium before the big game. Today, you’ll find George’s son and daughter, Terry and Angela, running the show, working to achieve that fine balance between honoring their father’s dream while providing the type of upscale experience today’s fine dining customer requires. Natural Pet Essentials isn’t just a store. It’s a lovely, locally-owned shop devoted to helping dogs and cats lead happy, healthy lives by providing nutritious foods, natural supplements, and superior quality pet products. Natural Pet Essentials was developed out of my love for animals and that love extends to our customers and their pets. I began my journey in the Midwest where I received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Animal Science from the University of Illinois. While attending U of I, I had the great fortune of working closely with my mentor, a renowned dog trainer and a Cornell and University of Illinois graduate with degrees in companion animal nutrition. During my tenure at U of I, I was selected for an internship position at a major pet food manufacturing facility, which provided additional understanding and knowledge of the pet food industry. After college, I spent time working at the Norfolk SPCA and several veterinary practices where I furthered my proficiency and understanding of pets before settling in a managerial position at a locally-owned pet supply store in Southern Pines, NC. Little did I know, that position would open my eyes to a world of natural pet care that I hadn’t been introduced to before. It was then that I realized this was my true passion and my calling and I was able to take those years of learning and experience and expand upon that. Natural Pet Essentials opened its doors in early 2012 and has proudly served the Charlottesville community for 5 years. We are pleased to be your premier source for quality pet products. We specialize in dog & cat nutrition but strive to carry all the necessary essentials. We host a variety of events at the store, including Paint Your Pet classes, educational seminars, seasonal gatherings, and more. We work very closely with local holistic veterinarian, Dr. Janice Raab, who joins us at the store for appointments providing laser and acupuncture services, as well as consultation about diet and Chinese herbs. We also work closely with many of our local rescues and do a variety of fundraising events to assist animals less fortunate than our own. Please stop by the store soon! We look forward to meeting you. - Kim Matsko Natural Pet Essentials - owner

Family owned and operated, Cardinal Point Vineyard and Winery lies in the beautiful foothills of the Blue Ridge, in the shadow of Afton Mountain. a Years ago, while stationed in the small city of Bad Kreuznach, Germany on the banks of the Nahe River, Paul and Ruth Gorman discovered a passion for the Riesling wines that were crafted with care in the little vineyards surrounding the town. It was then and there that they decided to add their own vineyard to their retirement plans.

In 1985, Paul retired from the army, and they moved to their farm in Afton, which they called Cardinal Point. Their first order of business was to install the first four acres — two acres each of Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon — on what is now Cardinal Point Vineyard. While eldest son John oversaw the renovation of the old farmhouse on the property, daughter Sarah and youngest son Tim tended
the vines while home from school during the summers. Tim took over as full-time Vineyard Manager in 1989, and has grown the Vineyard to 15 acres, supporting a variety of vinifera. In 2002, Paul and Ruth finally realized their dream of erecting a winery on the premises. Tim now adds winemaking to his farm duties, and the rest of the family share responsibilities in the enterprise. John, an architect, designed the winery buildings; Sarah handles business concerns; and Tim’s wife, Susan, runs the tasting room. The Gormans invite you to come and visit them in the tasting room, take a tour of the winery and see the vineyards that produce their delicious wines.

Jimmy attended Charlottesville High School then went onto Marshall University where he met his wife, Mary. Jimmy played football for Marshall as well as Charlottesville High School. They have owned and operated Airflow Systems since 1988 and Jimmy has become the area’s expert in Geothermal technology. Having been a part of this industry for nearly 30 years, they understand when you need an HVAC company it’s hard to know who to TRUST. They have developed a reputation in the community of doing what is right for their clients...no matter the cost. So why is trust so important... • They know their customers and neighbors and that means a lot to them. Having a trusted relationship with your community means everything. • Airflow troubleshoots every service call to ensure it’s not an easy fix like a breaker or a dirty filter, before they dispatch a technician. • And they won’t sell you a new unit if you don’t need it... if it’s broke they fix it. Circa was established in 1998 as the brainchild of Jackie. With a background in art and a lifelong love of treasure hunting, she soon turned her tiny shop into a sprawling, much-loved local institution. Under her benevolent dictatorship, Circa has become Charlottesville’s favorite spot for antique furniture, vintage finds and funky decor. Jackie’s daughter Robin has since joined the business. She has travelled all over the world and has settled back in Charlottesville with her family. In 1982 Robert and Jill Cox began selling solid wood roll top desks out of their home in Earlysville, VA under the name, “Tomorrow’s Antiques”. As the demand for these desks grew and grew the business was moved to the downtown mall underneath the old Hardware Store Restaurant in 1983. In the fall of 1988 a brand new building was completed and the business was again moved to a larger location on Route 29 near the Waffle House, where it remains today. In 1992 we changed our name from “Tomorrow’s Antiques” to “Classic Furniture”. We always loved the cleverness of the name but it was many times lost on people who thought we sold antiques.

The Charlottesville Free Clinic provides access to free primary healthcare – medical, dental, mental health and pharmacy – for community members with low incomes who remain uninsured. In 2016, 2,871 patients came through our open doors for a total of 9,279 visits. For our patients, the Free Clinic is their medical home. Dental health care is an essential component of primary care. The oral health of a person can significantly impact overall health and quality of life. The focus of our Dental Clinic is to provide basic oral health care: relieving pain and arresting infection. Last year, our dental staff helped over 1,800 patients. Last summer, we completed an expansion of our Dental Clinic that added another operatory space to serve more patients. We also started “walk-in” clinics three mornings a week. Thanks to a grant from the Virginia Health Care Foundation to expand hygiene, we are expanding our dental hygiene care within our community.

CENTRAL LIBRARY: A HISTORY
In October 1977, the Market Street Post Office building was purchased by Charlottesville and Albemarle County and a 17-month renovation project took place. After moving the McIntire collection of 90,000 volumes into the building on Market Street, the new Central Library opened on February 2, 1981 to patrons eager for a larger facility.
We Are C-VILLE 2017
The first known library in downtown Charlottesville was created in 1823 by a group of citizens that included Thomas Jefferson. The “Albemarle Library Society” boasted an initial collection of 238 titles. It was not until 1919 and the generosity of Paul Goodloe McIntire that a truly public library was formed. The cornerstone was laid in November 1919, and the new “Charlottesville Public Library” opened its doors to the public on May 30, 1921.
The upstairs of the library building had originally been a courtroom. Among other important legal battles at the building was the 1950 hearing where Gregory Swanson and his legal team, including future Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, won Mr. Swanson's admission as the first African American to attend UVA.

Today, the Central Library’s collection has reached 136,000 materials and about 350,000 people visit the building annually.

Casua l Cafe * event venue * garden shop * Hiking Trails * PYO Farm Dan Gregg, Founder of Grelen Nursery, Inc., has loved plants and trees as long as he can remember. In 1990, he left banking to follow his dream and move to Orange County where he started Grelen Nursery on a corner of his grandparent’s cattle farm. In 1997, as local demand grew, Dan hired Zeke Galvin as a partner to manage the landscaping side of the business. In 2003, Gregg and Galvin purchased a 200-acre farm located in Somerset, Virginia. This provided much needed space for expansion and during the next five years, Grelen acquired two adjoining properties. Today, Grelen Nursery sits on an absolutely gorgeous 600-acre property and is one of the largest retail tree nurseries in Virginia. They grow hundreds of types of trees, shrubs and plants and offer a full range of landscaping, hardscaping and tree care services. After 27 years, Grelen Nursery is known for having the highest quality products and services. The idea of a destination garden market and local pick-your-own experience was conceived in 2010 as a result of receiving many compliments about the layout of the Nursery and the spectacular views on the property. As a result, the partners planted berries and fruit trees, renovated a farmhouse and added gardens and a terrace. Once completed, Leslie Gregg, Dan’s wife, came on board to oversee the buying, marketing and operations of the new Market.

The Market at Grelen opened in April, 2013 as a European-Style Garden Shop and over time the concept has continued to evolve. Almost immediately, couples asked to get married at Grelen so a 4500 sq. ft. clear tent was installed and a full time Venue Manager was hired. In addition, the Casual Cafe concept was born in response to clients who were arriving hungry after traveling quite a distance to enjoy the “Grelen Experience.” Then a full time chef joined our team, and a large veggie garden was added to compliment the berries and fruit trees. The menu now includes delicious farm to table fare, as well as a wonderful selection of Virginia beer, cider & wine. Finally, given the incredible natural beauty that defines the property and is being enjoyed by so many visitors, a public 3.9 mile trail system (Grelen Trails) was added last year.

The Crystal Connection was born! We started out doing rock, gem and jewelry shows in the local area for non-profit organizations such as Hospice and JABA and eventually expanded to some out of town shows. People could also make purchases from us by appointment. As time went on and we became so busy with appointments, we decided it was time to open a retail store where folks could shop with us at their convenience. Seminole Square had the perfect spot for us and we are still there today. “ - Kathy Campbell, owner of The Crystal Connection, since 1987
This year we are celebrating 30 years in the Seminole Square Shopping Center. We couldn’t be more excited to share this experience with our new and returning customers! We see familiar faces everyday and it reminds us of the beautiful community that is Charlottesville. In Charlottesville, we become family, not just neighbors. Our customers go above and beyond for us- going out of their way sometimes and dealing with 29 traffic and construction just to visit. We are inspired by them and our community every day, continuing to grow and change just as Charlottesville does. The Crystal Connection specializes in sterling silver and gemstone jewelry, rocks and minerals and gifts from around the world. Almost all of our pieces are hand-selected by the owner and the manager. We carry unique products and have a great staff of knowledgeable and wonderful people. Whether you’re in need of something special or just need a break from the day, we look forward to seeing you soon! We hope that when you come to visit, you feel at home with all of us here at The Crystal Connection!

Helping Members Achieve Financial Success Since 1954
In 1954 a group of 40 UVA Hospital administrators organized a credit union for hospital employees that would eventually become UVA Community Credit Union with over 70,000 members. Today, anyone who lives, works, or owns a business in the City of Charlottesville or the counties of Albemarle, Culpeper, Fauquier, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, Madison, Nelson, Orange, or Rappahannock can enjoy the benefits of credit union membership. As a not-for-profit member cooperative, the credit union exists to serve its member-owners. We are fully invested in the communities we serve, supporting local education and the local economy. But our primary focus is helping members achieve their financial goals by offering a robust menu of products and services, competitive rates and outstanding personal service. When you join the credit union, you’re part of something bigger. You’re helping your neighbors, your neighborhood businesses, and future generations achieve financial success.

Change the way you age
Everything you need to age actively is right here for you. What are you waiting for? One in every four households in our region has at least one member over the age of 65. The average 65-year-old will live another 20 years. The future isn’t just for young people. If you’re fortunate enough to grow old, will you stay healthy and independent? To keep your healthspan as long as your lifespan, age actively. Learn something new—how to work your iPad or invest wisely. Keep fit with yoga or hiking. Dust off your sax and join a band. Meet people on a trip or at the bridge table. Stay involved in the community by volunteering. Research shows that lifelong engagement is the ticket to aging well.

I have been in and out of Charlottesville for over 25 years. I moved away a few times but have always come back. There’s something about this town. There is so much diversity here and such a level of acceptance among the people. Charlottesville is a great town. There are a ton of great local businesses and I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. I have seen many great local businesses grow. Businesses like the Paramount Theater coming back, Marco & Luca expanding, Willow tree starting from a loft apartment and so much more.
noticed! I was sold on vaping and haven’t had a cigarette since New Year’s Eve that year. However, that day I realized that I would have to travel to a small shop in Staunton that sold vaping supplies to purchase vapes as then there were still no stores in Charlottesville. Eight months and tons of research later, Smoke Brake Vapes was born.
If you are trying to quit the nasty cig habit, I am here to tell you that vaping works. I know from my own habit of smoking over twenty years and trying everything from gum to the patch, to medication and cold turkey. Nothing worked until I found the right device and e-liquid that worked for me. I quit smoking immediately. If you have been thinking about vaping but are afraid to stop smoking, come talk to us at Smoke Brake Vapes. We’ve all been there and would love to help you.

On New Year’s Eve 2013, I bought my last pack of smokes as I was determined to set my quit date for New Year’s Day…AGAIN. I ended up going to the hospital for an emergency surgery that day and, of course, I was not allowed to smoke, even though I tried to get them to let me run outside to smoke one more! I had a friend run to my house and grab my new vaping starter kit. After being in the hospital for four days, on day three, I thought to myself, ‘OMG, I haven’t had a cigarette for three days I hadn’t even
Being a business owner has always been a dream of mine. My mother is a retired owner of Bodo’s Bagels. I watched her, admired what she did and I wanted to do the same thing. I remember throwing business ideas out to her and she would shoot holes in them. It was back to the drawing board for me, until I told her my idea for Smoke Brake Vapes. “Do it!” she said.
We Are C-VILLE 2017
The idea for Smoke Brake Vapes came about back in 2011-2012. I had been trying to quit smoking again and heard about vaping. When I started looking into it I found that I could only purchase vape supplies online because there weren’t any vape shops around at this time. With my only options online, I had trouble finding an e-liquid flavor that I liked and the end result was I would always smoke.
We have been on the Downtown Mall across from Fellini’s since August 1, 2014 when we moved in after the art gallery left. We love our little space in Charlottesville and it’s got a lot of history. When I first opened and was cleaning up the upstairs loft space, I found an old broken framed picture print. I wiped off the dust from it and it was a picture of the shop space from the 70’s, back when it was City Fish Market. I reframed the picture and a friend of mine took a photo of OUR store front. Both prints are hanging in our lobby, reflecting the history and where we are today. In 2016, we were voted “Best Vape Shop” by our customers in ‘Best of C-VILLE.’ The most important thing to me is CUSTOMER SERVICE and educating our customers on the the product. I also always treat my employees like family and I have been very lucky with the great employees I have. We have been successful enough to be able to add a second location! In November of 2015, we opened our second shop in Orange on Rt. 15 near a great new shop called Orange County Tattoo and the new Pizza Hut location.
What is Naturopathic Medicine?
54
Today many people think of it as a “new alternative” medicine. In reality naturopathic medicine was developed over one hundred years ago in America, and has roots that stretch back thousands of years. Very basically, naturopathic medicine is a system of health care that incorporates modalities and techniques from nearly every system of health care that currently exists. Naturopathic doctors embrace the following six concepts: 1. First Do No Harm 2. Treat the Whole Person 3. Identify and Treat the Cause
4. Use the Healing Power of Nature 5. Prevention is the Best Cure 6. Doctor as Teacher

How Can We Help YOU?
When Percy Montague III and Ben Miller founded Montague, Miller & Co. REALTORS® in 1948, they envisioned it to be a family-oriented company that would be known for its integrity, professionalism, and cohesiveness. Now, over 65 years later and with the third generation of family in company leadership, those three words continue to reflect the spirit and philosophy of the company. The rich history of the company extends throughout the Charlottesville community having developed the residential communities of Redfields, Greenbrier, Woodbrook, among others and being integral to the development of Barracks Rd Shopping Center and Fashion Square Mall. Thanks to its consistent pursuit of offering leading edge services, Montague, Miller & Co. has become one of the top companies in Central Virginia with six locations, including offices in Charlottesville/Albemarle, Nelson/Amherst, Culpeper, Orange, and Madison. The 85+ associates who make up the Montague, Miller team are professional, caring people who place a premium on the quality of service provided to their clients, customers, and fellow Agents.

The leadership team which includes Percy Montague III, Carter Montague, Carol Clarke, Rives Bailey, Sasha Farmer, and Pam Drumheller are recognized throughout the industry, having been in numerous leadership positions at the local, state, and national level and having won awards at those levels as well. Being attuned to customer needs is something Montague, Miller does well. The company handles everything from residential and commercial properties to new construction, land and lot sales, estate properties, and property management. When consumers indicated they preferred to have everything related to their real estate transaction under one roof -- such as mortgage, closing, and home insurance, Montague, Miller & Co. developed the first one-stop-shop real estate service in the area. The Home Concierge Service was another innovation. After clients kept turning to their agents for recommendations of a handyman to do odd jobs around the house, Montague, Miller & Co. created a relationship with licensed and bonded vendors. Now, one call to the Home Concierge puts the public in touch with the professionals they need -- from carpenters to plumbers to decorators and everything in between. While local in flavor, Montague Miller & Co is a member of Leading Real Estate Companies of the World, an international relocation network that out-produces all of the real estate franchises. So whether your needs are here at home, across the country, or on another continent, we have the resources to help. We are Local, We are Global. Whether you are a first time home buyer, downsizing, investing, or just have questions about real estate we are here to help. Our associates have the knowledge, skills, training, and support to ensure that your needs are met and that your real estate transitions are as stress free as possible. L ITERAC Y VOLUN TEE RS of Charlottesville/Albemarle Change a life. One word at a time. Malika started volunteering in 2013 after she came across the Literacy Volunteers booth at the Festival of Cultures. She was matched with Solange, a mother from Togo who was working on obtaining her U.S. Citizenship. “Solange is really smart, she’s really dynamic, she’s a really capable person, if she can’t function that well in our society because of a language barrier, I think the rest of the community loses, because you lose somebody who could be contributing to your kid’s school, a good neighbor, or maybe a friend,” said Malika. Together they worked on improving Solange’s English while preparing for the Citizenship test by studying history and talking about current events. “My tutor helped me so much. She helped me for Citizenship test and I passed… Literacy Volunteers helps people so much. If I meet somebody who has a problem with English, I say go to Literacy. Literacy people will help you,” said Solange. Through working with Solange, Malika says her life was enriched. “What I do for a living doesn’t really give me a chance just to sit down with someone and laugh and tell jokes and talk about community,” said Malika. “That relationship that you build is really what life’s about.”
Next Tutor Training: Saturday, March 25

The Blue Ridge Irish Music School (BRIMS) is a Charlottesville nonprofit, educational organization offering Irish music and dance classes for all ages and skill levels. BRIMS was founded in Charlottesville in 2000, when local Irish fiddle instructors Tes Slominski and Sara Read decided to take a group of enthusiastic students to Ireland on a cultural study trip. The Charlottesville community was extremely supportive in contributing to the success of the first Ireland trip and C-ville Weekly was especially helpful, publishing a feature article and cover photo of the students and their instructors prior to the trip. In order to raise travel funds, the group of students, musicians, dancers and singers, ages 6-18, performed around Charlottesville and busked frequently on the downtown mall.
c-ville.com
When we returned from that first trip (we have been on three more trips since, the last one in 2016), the local community showed great interest in our project. BRIMS performed to a packed audience at Starr Hill (when it was an upstairs venue on W. Main St.) and everyone wanted to know how to get involved. That led to our decision to register as a non-profit and begin offering classes. Today, in addition to classes, BRIMS provides community outreach performances for organizations such as The Haven and local senior centers. BRIMS also hosts concerts and master classes with traveling and local musicians and performers, including some of the biggest names in Irish/Celtic music, song and dance. Every year in August, BRIMS also offers a summer day camp.

BRIMS is dedicated to creating community through Irish music and dance. Many of our students begin at a very young age and stay connected with the school into adulthood, often becoming teachers themselves. BRIMS welcomes all students, regardless of ability to pay. Our environment is warm and informal; we think of our students as family. We love the Charlottesville community, and look forward to many more years of sharing the love of Irish music and dance!

Cardboard Safari makes its home at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Charlottesville, Virginia. Inspired by the landscape that surrounds us, we celebrate the union of art and technology, joining imagination and fabrication to make beautiful sculptural forms for your home.
Our goal is to make neat stuff, fun products that foster an appreciation for the natural world. Creativity, conservation, and collaboration are paramount to our mission. Meticulously developing products on the computer and cutting precision parts on the laser, our designers strive to meld simplicity and sophistication in their sculptural works of art. The consumer has an opportunity to participate in the creative process by slotting together and embellishing the final forms. There is a little something for everyone – the hunter, the hipster, the aesthete, the child, the executive, the artist. These delightful topographies help people get in touch with their inner crafter, their sense of humor, and their sense of place. Get in touch , share your thoughts, inspire us with your work. We'd love to hear from you and welcome your feedback and suggestions. Thank you for the opportunity to bring art and joy into your home.

...honored to bring Jefferson’s vision to life. More than 200 years after Thomas Jefferson dreamed of growing grapes and crafting wines at his mountaintop home, Monticello, the Monticello American Viticulture Area (AVA) was designated in 1984 to recognize the region’s burgeoning wine industry. Though Jefferson’s dream remained unfilled during his lifetime, Virginia is now the 5th largest producer of wine in the United States.
While each winery brings their own distinct voice to their wines, we are an active and close-knit group of winegrowers dedicated to producing high quality wines that reflect the local terroir. Cooperation among members is one of our most valuable resources.
We welcome visitors to sample the wines, relax in the countryside and share in the pride of Virginia’s winemaking heritage. monticellowinetrail.com • admin@monticellowinetrail.com.
facebook.com/cville.weekly
The success of working together and sharing knowledge can be seen as the area’s wines consistently receive high rankings and representation as top wines in the Virginia’s Governor Cup and national competitions. We each have seen increasing tasting room traffic as the region’s tourism reputation grows.

Each April we all get together for the Taste of Monticello Wine Trail Festival to celebrate the best of central Virginia wine with the community. We recently started a Winemaker’s Research Exchange where winemakers can learn not only from their own studies but those from neighbors.

Travis Croxton has spent the last two decades resurrecting the Virginia oyster industry by using ecologically-friendly aquaculture harvesting techniques and leading a renaissance of oyster farmers in the Chesapeake Bay. As co-owner of Rappahannock Oyster Company, Travis spent years in the best kitchens across the country showing his wares and talking to chefs about his oysters. Along the way, Croxton quickly realized that the greatest chefs and restaurants in the country are the ones that champion their local farmers and continuously work to educate their staff and customers. With so many “farm-to-table” claims, he quickly recognized that only a few restaurants truly walked the walk. Among those were his own Rappahannock Restaurant in Richmond, VA, which was awarded a 2014 Esquire Best New Restaurant Award, Rappahannock Oyster Bar in Washington, DC as well as Merroir Tasting Room in Topping, VA. Travis recalls that “many farmers were reluctant to work with restaurants when we started – they had told us horror stories of being listed on restaurant blackboards as part of their menu items but never receiving phone calls for second orders – we had to prove ourselves to the community, to teach them that we were different and that they could depend on us for incorporating and promoting their products on a consistent basis”. Noticing that his chefs were going crazy for products from artisans and farmers in and around the Shenandoah, Croxton jumped at the chance to open a restaurant in Charlottesville. “So many of our favorite producers are right here, whether it’s produce, cheese, meats, dairy, poultry and not to mention tapping into the local brewery and cider scene, this is one of the best areas in the country for sourcing great products” says Travis. ROCKSALT aims to complement the bounty of the Charlottesville area with fresh seafood from the Virginia and Carolina coasts, including Croxton’s own oyster and clam farms. And while Croxton loves to talk to customers about his shellfish, he gets deeply passionate about fish – “One of the unique features of ROCKSALT is that we feature under-utilized fish that don’t regularly appear on menus. Fisherman have a tough time having to focus on seasonal availability of traditional powerhouse restaurant items like salmon, but their livelihoods and the sustainability of all fish in our coasts and bays would be enhanced if fisherman could instead focus on what’s currently available and have a market for those fish. So you will see a lot of croaker, spanish mackerel, bluefish, porgy, etc… that aren’t as widely featured but still taste incredible off our wood-fired grill or pan-seared dishes.” Travis admits to having zero kitchen skills, so you will often see him milling around talking to guests or helping out at the raw bar - please make sure to introduce yourself when you see him and feel free to ask any questions. When not in town, Travis keeps himself incredibly busy attending to his oyster and clam farms, visiting his other restaurants but mostly evangelizing oyster farming throughout the country at national food and wine events, charity dinners and other gatherings such as hosting James Beard House dinners in NYC in each of the last 5 years. Croxton’s accomplishments have garnered him recognition as an innovator in the culinary world; Food & Wine magazine recognized him with the 2005 Tastemaker’s Award. Croxton was also recognized in 2013 by Zagat as one of the “24 Restaurant-World Power Players Around the U.S.” In 2014, Travis won the acclaimed Elby Award for Restaurateur of the Year in Richmond and was awarded as one of Style Weekly’s Top 40 under 40. 2015 saw Southern Living name him as among the “50 People Who Are Changing the South” Most recently, Travis was appointed to Governor Terry McAuliffe’s Commonwealth Council On Bridging The Nutritional Divide. But Travis says his biggest goal is simply “bringing great food to great people and making sure they have a great time.”

As an artist, I love drawing and painting. I also enjoy helping others make the art that they want to create. My name is John A. Hancock and it was 1979 when I taught my very first painting class. Not long after, I became a college art professor specializing in teaching traditional and contemporary drawing, design, and painting in oil, acrylic, and watercolor. I frequently worked with adults beginning or returning to art and, during my summers, I also taught in and directed the art program of NC Governor’s School-East. In 2000 I moved to Charlottesville and, by 2002, I had joined and relocated my studio to the McGuffey Art Center. In late 2008, I began taking on private adult students and teaching drawing classes for high school age students at McGuffey. The next year I was invited to also teach at Crozet Arts (OCSA). I am so grateful to all the excellent students that I have worked with over the years. It has been a real joy and privilege to work together, engaging, encouraging, and sometimes to even challenging each other in positive ways. Sure, I bring the 30+ years of experience and knowledge ... but we all learning from each other. My goal always was and will be about assisting my students, helping them/you to reach for your art goals, about you becoming the artists that you want to be. Please do get in touch if you want to ask a question, learn more, or would like to join one of my classes.
